1. The electron and proton irradiation effects on the properties of high-voltage 4H-SiC Schottky diodes within the operating temperature range

Abstract: In the paper, the effects of type, dose and temperature of irradiation with stable elementary particles (0.9 MeV electrons and 15 MeV protons) on the properties of the high-voltage 4H-SiC Junction Barrier Schottky diodes at room temperature (23°С) and the limiting operating one (175°С) have been compared. The electron irradiation of the objects with equal doses at 23°С и 175°С was found to cause a significant increase in its base differential resistance in the former case and the absence of this effect in the latter. However, in the latter, DLTS spectra exhibited a noticeable increase in the concentration of deep levels in the upper half of the band gap. The proton irradiation resulted in a noticeable rise in the mentioned resistance even at 175°С. The results obtained make it possible to evaluate the radiation resistance of the studied devices to proton and electron irradiation within the framework of any given requirements.

2. A theoretical study of macromolecule interaction with the quasi-free-standing and epitaxial graphene formed on the silicon carbide polytypes

Abstract: A two-level model of an organic macromolecule has been put forward in order to analyze theoretically the interaction of dangling molecular orbitals of the organic macromolecule with quasi-free-standing and epitaxial graphene. The model initially contains a completely filled (HOMO) and empty (LOMO) levels. Within the framework of the standard adsorption approach, the interaction of these levels with quasi-free and epitaxial graphene was considered. Silicon carbide polytypes were considered as substrates. Our estimates showed that the maximum transition of electrons from dangling bonds to epitaxial graphene took place for the 3C-SiC substrate.

3. Modelling the form factor of Pinus sylvestris trees in the Kostroma region, Russia

Abstract: The paper considers the issue of using the stem taper to model the form factor of pine tree trunks in the Kostroma region. It has been determined that the diameter values predicted by the model can be used to establish the taxation characteristics of trunks. Based on the results of field work and archival data, 10064 diameter measurements were obtained at various heights for 689 pine trees growing in the Kostroma region. The quality of the application of the stem taper model for calculating the form factor was assessed using quality metrics generally accepted in statistics based on data from the analysis of tree trunks. It has been established that the use of the considered stem taper model for calculating the main taxation indicators of tree trunks in pine forests of the Kostroma region will help to increase the accuracy of determining the stock of forest range and will be important for scientific research.

4. Justification of irrigation reclamation using data on the probability of heat and moisture in the Central Non-Chernozem Zone of Russia

Abstract: Ongoing climate change creates risks for many sectors of the economy. They can have a particularly strong impact on agriculture, since the amount of incoming heat and moisture is one of the most important factors in agricultural production. The main goal of this study was to analyzed of the provision of heat and humidity by indicators, temperature more than 10 °C, the sum of factors during the growing season, differences in temperatures and evaporation, humidification coefficients to justify the need for irrigation measures. The calculations were carried out for the growing season, that is, when positive values of average daily air temperatures were recorded. In all calculations, observational data from the V.A. Mikhelson Meteorological Observatory (in Moscow) was used for 30 years (period from 1993 to 2022). The study analyzed the provision of the central part of the Non-Chernozem Zone of Russia according to such indicators as the sum of temperatures of the growing season greater than 10 °C, the sum of precipitation for the growing season, the difference between the sum of precipitation and evaporation for the growing season, G.T. Selyaninov hydrothermal coefficient, D.I. Shashko coefficient of natural moisture. The analysis of the assessment of the heat supply and moisture supply of the territory and the attitude of agricultural and fruit crops to drought demonstrate the need to moisten the root layer of the soil even in zones of excessive moisture, when during the growing season there are separate periods with insufficient and uneven atmospheric moisture.

5. Monitoring the species composition of the undergrowth in some regions of Armenia and central Russia

Abstract: Changes in the species composition of tree species of the undergrowth, the tasks of preserving biodiversity in clearing areas and under the influence of climate change, are of theoretical and practical scientific interest. The main goal of this study was to monitor the species diversity of dominant undergrowth species in the forests of some regions of Armenia and central Russia under conditions of climate change and human activity. In Armenia, research was carried out in Lori and Tavush regions. In Russia, research was carried out in the Kostroma and Moscow regions, located in the center of the Russian Plain. The studies were carried out using route, semi-stationary, stationary methods using generally accepted methods. Field work was carried out during growing seasons from 2019 to 2023. Field surveys were carried out in the most typical forest types for the regions. In the Lori region, 14 families were identified, which include the dominant species of undergrowth, in the Tavush region - 11 families and in the regions of central Russia - 11 families. For all objects of study, the largest number of species contains the Rosaceae family. The main factors influencing understory biodiversity are human activities (logging, recreational impacts, etc.) and climate change. Thus, changes in the climate system of the regions of Armenia and central Russia in the future create new risks for the sustainability of undergrowth biological diversity in forests.

Abstract: The research is focused on the study of expression means of negative (pejorative) evaluation in sports discourse. Based on the textual and audio-video resources related to sports reporting, the authors study lexical and stylistic levels of assessment, their linguistic and pragmatic peculiarities and nuances. The study highlights the broadness of expressive means in the English sports discourse, which is conditioned by their multiple functionalities. The article provides the diagrams presenting the occurrence and frequency of lexical units (emotive lexicon in sports reports; phraseological units and tropes intended to express negative evaluation in a sports report). The research results and findings contribute to the development of sports discourse as the object of linguistic study.

7. Invisible Higgs decay from dark matter freeze-in at stronger coupling

Abstract: We study the Higgs boson decay into dark matter (DM) in the framework of freeze-in at stronger coupling. Even though the Higgs-DM coupling is significant, up to order one, DM does not thermalize due to the Boltzmann suppression of its production at low temperatures. We find that this mechanism leads to observable Higgs decay into invisible final states with the branching fraction of 10% and below, while producing the correct DM relic abundance. This applies to the DM masses down to the MeV scale, which requires a careful treatment of the hadronic production modes. For DM masses below the muon threshold, the Boltzmann suppression is not operative and the freeze-in nature of the production mechanism is instead guaranteed by the smallness of the electron Yukawa coupling. As a result, MeV DM with a significant coupling to the Higgs boson remains non-thermal as long as the reheating temperature does not exceed $\mathcal{O}(100)\;$MeV. 8. Molecular sorting on a fluctuating membrane

Abstract: Molecular sorting in biological membranes is essential for proper cellular function. It also plays a crucial role in the budding of enveloped viruses from host cells. We recently proposed that this process is driven by phase separation, where the formation and growth of sorting domains depend primarily on short-range intermolecular interactions. In addition to these, Casimir-like forces -- arising from entropic effects in fluctuating membranes and acting on longer ranges -- may also play a significant role in the molecular distillation process. Here, using a combination of theoretical analysis and numerical simulations, we explore how these forces contribute to sorting, particularly in the biologically relevant regime where short-range intermolecular interactions are weak. Our results show that Casimir-like forces enhance molecular distillation by reducing the critical radius for the formation of new sorting domains and facilitating the capture of molecules within these domains. We identify the relative rigidity of the membrane and supermolecular domains as a key parameter controlling molecular sorting efficiency, offering new insights into the physical principles underlying molecular sorting in biological systems.

Abstract: Co-crystallization is an accessible way to control physicochemical characteristics of organic crystals, which finds many biomedical applications. In this work, we present Generative Method for Co-crystal Design (GEMCODE), a novel pipeline for automated co-crystal screening based on the hybridization of deep generative models and evolutionary optimization for broader exploration of the target chemical space. GEMCODE enables fast de novo co-crystal design with target tabletability profiles, which is crucial for the development of pharmaceuticals. With a series of experimental studies highlighting validation and discovery cases, we show that GEMCODE is effective even under realistic computational constraints. Furthermore, we explore the potential of language models in generating co-crystals. Abstract: We provide a detailed commentary on the energy calibration of the TA experiment described in our paper (arXiv:2404.16948 [astro-ph.HE]). That paper concludes that the TA energy estimation, which is tied to optical measurements, might be incorrect. A response from members of the TA Collaboration (arXiv:2407.12892 [astro-ph.HE]) states that this conclusion is wrong and "stems from a misinterpretation and an incorrect application of the TA energy deposit formula". Here we demonstrate that our formula for energy deposit is not in fact a rescaled modification of the TA equation, but follows from description of the processes occurring during the passage of charged particles through 1.2 cm thick scintillator. 11. Stabl: Blockchain Fault Tolerance

Abstract: Blockchain promises to make online services more fault tolerant due to their inherent distributed nature. Their ability to execute arbitrary programs in different geo-distributed regions and on diverse operating systems make them an alternative of choice to our dependence on unique software whose recent failure affected 8.5 millions of machines. As of today, it remains, however, unclear whether blockchains can truly tolerate failures. In this paper, we assess the fault tolerance of blockchain. To this end, we inject failures in controlled deployments of five modern blockchain systems, namely Algorand, Aptos, Avalanche, Redbelly and Solana. We introduce a novel sensitivity metric, interesting in its own right, as the difference between the integrals of two cumulative distribution functions, one obtained in a baseline environment and one obtained in an adversarial environment. Our results indicate that (i) all blockchains except Redbelly are highly impacted by the failure of a small part of their network, (ii) Avalanche and Redbelly benefit from the redundant information needed for Byzantine fault tolerance while others are hampered by it, and more dramatically (iii) Avalanche and Solana cannot recover from localised transient failures., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: We report the first measurement of the azimuthal anisotropy of J$/\psi$ at forward rapidity ($1.2<|\eta|<2.2$) in Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The data were collected by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 and 2016 with integrated luminosity of 14.5~nb$^{-1}$. The second Fourier coefficient ($v_2$) of the azimuthal distribution of $J/\psi$ is determined as a function of the transverse momentum ($p_T$) using the event-plane method. The measurements were performed for several selections of collision centrality: 0\%--50\%, 10\%--60\%, and 10\%-40\%. We find that in all cases the values of $v_2(p_T)$, which quantify the elliptic flow of J$/\psi$, are consistent with zero. The results are consistent with measurements at midrapidity, indicating no significant elliptic flow of the J$/\psi$ within the quark-gluon-plasma medium at collision energies of $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV., Comment: 369 authors from 72 institutions, 12 pages, 7 figures, 5 tables. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review C. Abstract: We present the first forward-rapidity measurements of elliptic anisotropy of open-heavy-flavor muons at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The measurements are based on data samples of Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV collected by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 and 2016 with integrated luminosity of 14.5~nb$^{-1}$. 14. Effects of the entropy source on Monte Carlo simulations

Abstract: In this paper we show how different sources of random numbers influence the outcomes of Monte Carlo simulations. We compare industry-standard pseudo-random number generators (PRNGs) to a quantum random number generator (QRNG) and show, using examples of Monte Carlo simulations with exact solutions, that the QRNG yields statistically significantly better approximations than the PRNGs. Our results demonstrate that higher accuracy can be achieved in the commonly known Monte Carlo method for approximating $\pi$. For Buffon's needle experiment, we further quantify a potential reduction in approximation errors by up to $1.89\times$ for optimal parameter choices when using a QRNG and a reduction of the sample size by $\sim 8\times$ for sub-optimal parameter choices. We attribute the observed higher accuracy to the underlying differences in the random sampling, where a uniformity analysis reveals a tendency of the QRNG to sample the solution space more homogeneously. Additionally, we compare the results obtained with the QRNG and PRNG in solving the non-linear stochastic Schr\"odinger equation, benchmarked against the analytical solution. We observe higher accuracy of the approximations of the QRNG and demonstrate that equivalent results can be achieved at 1/3 to 1/10-th of the costs.

Abstract: In this article a new method is proposed for estimating the mass composition of cosmic rays in individual events with energies above $1.25 \times 10^{19}$ eV. It is based on a joint analysis of experimental data and simulation results obtained using the QGSJet-II.04 model for muons with threshold energy $E_{\mu} = 1.0 \times \cos\theta$ GeV in air showers with zenith angles up to 60 degrees. The data from ground-based and underground scintillation detectors of the Yakutsk EAS array were used. Abstract: The $J/\psi$ and $\psi(2S)$ charmonium states, composed of $c\bar{c}$ quark pairs and known since the 1970s, are widely believed to serve as ideal probes to test quantum chromodynamics in high-energy hadronic interactions. However, there is not yet a complete understanding of the charmonium-production mechanism. Recent measurements of $J/\psi$ production as a function of event charged-particle multiplicity at the collision energies of both the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) show enhanced $J/\psi$ production yields with increasing multiplicity. One potential explanation for this type of dependence is multiparton interactions (MPI). We carry out the first measurements of self-normalized $J/\psi$ yields and the $\psi(2S)$ to $J/\psi$ ratio at both forward and backward rapidities as a function of self-normalized charged-particle multiplicity in $p$$+$$p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV. In addition, detailed {\sc pythia} studies tuned to RHIC energies were performed to investigate the MPI impacts. We find that the PHENIX data at RHIC are consistent with recent LHC measurements and can only be described by {\sc pythia} calculations that include MPI effects. The forward and backward $\psi(2S)$ to $J/\psi$ ratio, which serves as a unique and powerful approach to study final-state effects on charmonium production, is found to be less dependent on the charged-particle multiplicity., Comment: 301 authors from 69 institutions, 8 pages, 3 figures. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review D Letters. Abstract: In this paper we present computational experiments with the Markov Chain Monte Carlo Matrix Inversion ($(\text{MC})^2\text{MI}$) on several accelerator architectures and investigate their impact on performance and scalability of the method. Our method leverages the power of modern machine learning libraries such as NumPyro and JAX, allowing us to perform Bayesian optimization on multiple platforms, including CPUs, GPUs, TPUs, and in parallel. Our approach enables a low entry level for exploration of the methods while maintaining high performance. Abstract: Multilayer nanoscale systems incorporating buried ultrathin tunnel oxides, 2D materials, and solid electrolytes are crucial for next-generation logics, memory, quantum and neuro-inspired computing. Still, an ultrathin layer control at angstrom scale is challenging for cutting-edge applications. Here we introduce a scalable approach utilizing focused ion-beam annealing for buried ultrathin oxides engineering with angstrom-scale thickness control. Our molecular dynamics simulations of Ne+ irradiation on Al/a-AlOx/Al structure confirms the pivotal role of ion generated crystal defects. We experimentally demonstrate its performance on Josephson junction tunning in the resistance range of 2 to 37% with a standard deviation of 0.86% across 25x25 mm chip. Moreover, we showcase +-17 MHz frequency control (+-0.172 A tunnel barrier thickness) for superconducting transmon qubits with coherence times up to 500 us, which is promising for useful fault-tolerant quantum computing. This work ensures ultrathin multilayer nanosystems engineering at the ultimate scale by depth-controlled crystal defects generation.

Abstract: The PHENIX experiment measured the centrality dependence of two-pion Bose-Einstein correlation functions in $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV Au$+$Au collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The data are well represented by L\'evy-stable source distributions. The extracted source parameters are the correlation-strength parameter $\lambda$, the L\'evy index of stability $\alpha$, and the L\'evy-scale parameter $R$ as a function of transverse mass $m_T$ and centrality. The $\lambda(m_T)$ parameter is constant at larger values of $m_T$, but decreases as $m_T$ decreases. The L\'evy scale parameter $R(m_T)$ decreases with $m_T$ and exhibits proportionality to the length scale of the nuclear overlap region. The L\'evy exponent $\alpha(m_T)$ is independent of $m_T$ within uncertainties in each investigated centrality bin, but shows a clear centrality dependence. At all centralities, the L\'evy exponent $\alpha$ is significantly different from that of Gaussian ($\alpha=2$) or Cauchy ($\alpha=1$) source distributions. Comparisons to the predictions of Monte-Carlo simulations of resonance-decay chains show that in all but the most peripheral centrality class (50%-60%), the obtained results are inconsistent with the measurements, unless a significant reduction of the in-medium mass of the $\eta'$ meson is included. In each centrality class, the best value of the in-medium $\eta'$ mass is compared to the mass of the $\eta$ meson, as well as to several theoretical predictions that consider restoration of $U_A(1)$ symmetry in hot hadronic matter., Comment: 401 authors from 75 institutions, 20 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. v1 is version submitted to Physical Review C. Abstract: We present electrical and thermal transport measurements in single crystals of the metallic oxide RuO$_2$. The resistivity and Seebeck coefficient measured up to 970K confirm the metallic nature of transport. Magnetoresistance and Hall effect measurements as a function of orientation can be most easily described by a multiband transport model. We find that the ordinary Hall effect dominates any anomalous Hall signal in single crystals.

Angular correlations between neutral-pion triggers and charged hadrons with transverse momenta in the range 4--12~GeV/$c$ and 0.5--7~GeV/$c$, respectively, have been measured by the PHENIX experiment in 2014 for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$~GeV. Suppression is observed in the yield of high-momentum jet fragments opposite the trigger particle, which indicates jet suppression stemming from in-medium partonic energy loss, while enhancement is observed for low-momentum particles. The ratio and differences between the yield in Au$+$Au collisions and $p$$+$$p$ collisions, $I_{AA}$ and $\Delta_{AA}$, as a function of the trigger-hadron azimuthal separation, $\Delta\phi$, are measured for the first time at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Abstract: Active development of quarries in the Republic of Karelia contributes to the improvement of the control system of the parameters of drilling and blasting operations with the aim of ensuring the safety of buildings and structures near mining facilities. During the study of the seismic effect of industrial explosions, the technology of blasting has been considered and a typical scheme of blasting at a mining enterprise has been described. In the quarries of the Kostomuksha mining and processing plant, to reduce the seismic effect, short-blasting is used. The created monitoring system in Karelia makes it possible to select not only teleseismic earthquakes, but also regional and local scale events on the seismic records. Explosions are recorded by seismic stations of the Karelian network and other regions if the magnitude of the event is more than 1.7. As a result of the waveforms' analysis of the records of the seismic station KOS6, located a few kilometers from the quarries, a clear entry of the transverse wave has been noted. The values of the local magnitudes of the explosions established during the six months of 2018 vary from 1.5 to 2.5 and do not exceed 3. The constructed averaging line shows the dependence of magnitude on the total charge; facts of its growth are noted with an increase in the total mass of the charge, as well as significant spread of data from the averaging line. In the course of the study, the possibility of reducing the seismic effects of industrial explosions through the use of effective short-delayed invocation schemes has been determined.

Abstract: Modification of bitumen with polymers is an effective way to improve its properties. Despite the sufficiently widespread use of this method, currently there are practically no appropriate methods of this process calculation. Moreover, there are almost no the models to determine the size of formed polymer particles in modified bitumen of non-traditional polymer modifiers. The paper gives a mathematical description of the secondary polyethylene terephthalate particles formation in bitumen during the process of its modification. In terms of the stochastic approach, we obtained the analytical expressions for the differential distribution function of polymer particles in size, as well as the average size, surface, and volume. According to the research, increasing the rotation speed of the stirring mechanism leads to a decrease of the average particle size of the polymer. We use free software wxMaxima to perform the calculations.

Abstract: The most objective information about the state of Moscow’s forests is provided by long-term observation data on permanent trial plots. Such data makes it possible to identify changes in forest stands under the influence of recreationists, environmental pollution, and climate change. Long-term observational data are particularly valuable in modeling forest stand growth and productivity. The goal of the study is to develop a dynamic model of the growth of oak stands in Moscow based on long-term observation data. The modelling data were obtained from 7 plots of the permanent sample plot network established by the Forest Experimental Station of the Russian State Agrarian University – Moscow Timiryazev Agricultural Academy. There are a total of 42 inventories and the number of inventories per plot range from 3 to 9. Inventories were carried out between 1927 and 2009. We used three initial state variables for prediction, as in many studies. Taking into account the peculiarities of the inventory of forest stands in Russia, the mean height, quadratic mean diameter and number of trees per hectare were used as initial variables. All obtained models meet the requirements for forest inventory in Russia in terms of error values of stand attributes. The model in this study provides a simple and reliable system for predicting the growth and yield of Moscow oak stands.

Abstract: A large number of studies have been devoted to the cedar forests in Russia, but studies of the conicity of trunks remain limited. The main goal of this study was to analyze two-parameter single equation stem tapper models for Siberian cedar trees, which will serve as guidelines for future research. The study tested six two-parameter models of one equation for the conicity of the trunk of Siberian cedar trees. For this, data from 1805 measurements of diameters in 193 felled trees were used. The data were collected in natural pure and mixed Siberian pine stands in Irkutsk region (Southern Siberia) and Tyumen region (Western Siberia), Russia. Our analysis showed that for our data set, the Reed and Green model turned out to be the best model. The model is characterized by the smallest average absolute error percentage, the square root of the root mean square error, and the largest coefficient of determination. The residuals of this model are independent and characterized by constant variance. The analysis performed showed that two-parameter single equation models have a good fit in the central part of the trunk, therefore, forestry management in cedar forests should be used with caution. For the purposes of forestry management in cedar forests, it is recommended to develop and put into practice more complex models.

On the territory of the nature reserve, 20 species of pathogenic fungi were found parasitizing on the trunks of living and dead trees. Dead wood (57%) is the main substrate for fungal fruiting bodies. Producing tree trunks use about 28% of xylophytes as a substrate, dry-standing – 15%.

31. Seismic model of the Earth's crust and upper mantle beneath the Fennoscandian Shield

Abstract: Well-founded concepts of the crust and upper mantle structure of the Fennoscandian Shield were developed. Quantitative evidence for horizontal and vertical lithospheric heterogeneities was obtained. Highly detailed integrated geological and geophysical investigations, supported by superdeep drilling, have been conducted in the eastern part of the shield in recent years. Seismogeological crustal models of individual geotectonic provinces were constructed, which indicate that the structure of the crystalline crust displays a pattern of blocks, arranged hierarchically, with no persistent seismic boundaries across the entire shield. Both low- and high-velocity zones, correlatable with geological bodies, occur locally. The structural plans of contours and the velocities of various deep sections were shown to be inconsistent. We conclude that the upper mantle is laterally complex and heterogeneous, and that there is no asthenosphere in the classical sense of the word.

32. Gaussian Recombining Split Tree

Abstract: Binomial trees are widely used in the financial sector for valuing securities with early exercise characteristics, such as American stock options. However, while effective in many scenarios, pricing options with CRR binomial trees are limited. Major limitations are volatility estimation, constant volatility assumption, subjectivity in parameter choices, and impracticality of instantaneous delta hedging. This paper presents a novel tree: Gaussian Recombining Split Tree (GRST), which is recombining and does not need log-normality or normality market assumption. GRST generates a discrete probability mass function of market data distribution, which approximates a Gaussian distribution with known parameters at any chosen time interval. GRST Mixture builds upon the GRST concept while being flexible to fit a large class of market distributions and when given a 1-D time series data and moments of distributions at each time interval, fits a Gaussian mixture with the same mixture component probabilities applied at each time interval. Gaussian Recombining Split Tre Mixture comprises several GRST tied using Gaussian mixture component probabilities at the first node. Our extensive empirical analysis shows that the option prices from the GRST align closely with the market.

33. Spontaneous strain in quasi-two-dimensional Janus CdSe nanoplatelets and its microscopic mechanisms

Abstract: Spontaneous strain and spontaneous folding of thin nanoplatelets are known phenomena whose microscopic mechanisms are still debating. In this work, first-principles calculations are used to study the mechanical stresses that arise in Janus CdSe nanoplatelets and result in their spontaneous strain. Calculations reveal the existence of three microscopic mechanisms of this phenomenon. Two bulk mechanisms are associated with the inverse piezoelectric effect in an electric field created by the difference in electronegativities of ligands and by the depolarizing field resulting from the difference in the potential jumps in electrical double layers on the surfaces of nanoplatelets. These mechanisms account for 5-25% of the observed effect. The third mechanism is associated with the surface strain of nanoplatelets by bridging bonds, and its influence is predominant. It is shown that the latter mechanism cause spontaneous folding of thin CdSe nanoplatelets and, depending on the values of surface stresses and lateral orientation of nanoplatelets, can result in formation of their experimentally observed structures such as scrolls, spirals, and twisted ribbons., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables

Abstract: Phase estimation is known to be a robust method for single-qubit gate calibration in quantum computers, while Bayesian estimation is widely used in devising optimal methods for learning in quantum systems. We present Bayesian phase estimation methods that adaptively choose a control phase and the time of coherent evolution based on prior phase knowledge. In the presence of noise, we find near-optimal performance with respect to known theoretical bounds, and demonstrate some robustness of the estimates to noise that is not accounted for in the model of the estimator, making the methods suitable for calibrating operations in quantum computers. We determine the utility of control parameter values using functions of the prior probability of the phase that quantify expected knowledge gain either in terms of expected narrowing of the posterior or expected information gain. In particular, we find that by maximising the rate of expected gain we obtain phase estimates having standard deviation a factor of 1.42 above the Heisenberg limit, which is the lowest value we know of for sequential phase estimation. The methods provide optimal solutions accounting for available prior knowledge and experimental imperfections with minimal effort from the user. The effect of many types of noise can be specified in the model of the measurement probabilities, and the rate of knowledge gain can easily be adjusted to account for times included in the measurement sequence other than the coherent evolution leading to the unknown phase, such as times required for state preparation or readout.

Abstract: An analysis of calibrations of extensive air showers with zenith angles $\theta \le 50^{\circ}$ and energies $E_{\text{SD}} \ge 10^{18.5}$ eV was carried out in experiments at the Yakutsk array and Telescope Array. The values of $E_{\text{SD}}$ were determined from particle densities measured with ground-based scintillation detectors at a distance $r = 800$ m from shower axis. Measured densities were compared with the values obtained in simulations preformed with the use of CORSIKA code within the framework of QGSJet-II.04 hadron interaction model for primary protons. For showers with $\theta = 0^{\circ}$ the $E_{\text{SD}}$ estimates of both arrays are very close, and their energy spectra are similar in shape and absolute value. Abstract: With the STAR experiment at the BNL Relativisic Heavy Ion Collider, we characterize $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 200 GeV p+Au collisions by event activity (EA) measured within the pseudorapidity range $eta$ $in$ [-5, -3.4] in the Au-going direction and report correlations between this EA and hard- and soft- scale particle production at midrapidity ($\eta$ $\in$ [-1, 1]). At the soft scale, charged particle production in low-EA p+Au collisions is comparable to that in p+p collisions and increases monotonically with increasing EA. At the hard scale, we report measurements of high transverse momentum (pT) jets in events of different EAs. In contrast with the soft particle production, high-pT particle production and EA are found to be inversely related. To investigate whether this is a signal of jet quenching in high-EA events, we also report ratios of pT imbalance and azimuthal separation of dijets in high- and low-EA events. Abstract: The well-known mathematical instrument for detection common roots for pairs of polynomials and multiple roots of polynomials are resultants and discriminants. For a pair of polynomials $f$ and $g$ their resultant $R(f,g)$ is a function of their coefficients. Zeros of resultant $R(f,g)$ correspond to the families of coefficients of $f$ and $g$ such that $f$ and $g$ have a common root. Herewith the calculation of this common root is a separate problem. The principal results on calculation of a unique common root of two polynomials and also about calculating a unique root of multiplicity 2 of a polynomial in terms of the first order partial derivatives of resultants and discriminants are given in the monograph by I.M. Gelfand, M.M. Kapranov, A.V. Zelevinsky [1, Ch. 3, Ch. 12]. A significant development of the ideas of this book in the direction of searching for formulas for multiple roots of polynomials is presented in the paper by I.A. Antipova, E.N. Mikhalkin, A.K. Tsikh [2]. The key result of this article is [2, Theorem 1] where the expression for a unique root of multiplicity $s \geq 3$ in terms of the first order partial derivatives of resultant of the polynomial and it's derivative of order $s-1$. In the present article the explicit formulas for higher derivatives of resultants of pairs of polynomials possessing common roots are obtained. On this basis a series of results that differ in ideas from [2, Theorem 1] linking higher derivatives of resultants and common multiple roots are proven. Abstract: The Spin Physics Detector collaboration proposes to install a universal detector in the second interaction point of the NICA collider under construction (JINR, Dubna) to study the spin structure of the proton and deuteron and other spin-related phenomena using a unique possibility to operate with polarized proton and deuteron beams at a collision energy up to 27 GeV and a luminosity up to $10^{32}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. As the main goal, the experiment aims to provide access to the gluon TMD PDFs in the proton and deuteron, as well as the gluon transversity distribution and tensor PDFs in the deuteron, via the measurement of specific single and double spin asymmetries using different complementary probes such as charmonia, open charm, and prompt photon production processes. Other polarized and unpolarized physics is possible, especially at the first stage of NICA operation with reduced luminosity and collision energy of the proton and ion beams. This document is dedicated exclusively to technical issues of the SPD setup construction.

Abstract: Superconducting Nb thin films have recently attracted significant attention due to their utility for quantum information technologies. In the processing of Nb thin films, fluoride-based chemical etchants are commonly used to remove surface oxides that are known to affect superconducting quantum devices adversely. However, these same etchants can also introduce hydrogen to form Nb hydrides, potentially negatively impacting microwave loss performance. Here, we present comprehensive materials characterization of Nb hydrides formed in Nb thin films as a function of fluoride chemical treatments. In particular, secondary-ion mass spectrometry, X-ray scattering, and transmission electron microscopy reveal the spatial distribution and phase transformation of Nb hydrides. The rate of hydride formation is determined by the fluoride solution acidity and the etch rate of Nb2O5, which acts as a diffusion barrier for hydrogen into Nb. The resulting Nb hydrides are detrimental to Nb superconducting properties and lead to increased power-independent microwave loss in coplanar waveguide resonators. However, Nb hydrides do not correlate with two-level system loss or device aging mechanisms. Overall, this work provides insight into the formation of Nb hydrides and their role in microwave loss, thus guiding ongoing efforts to maximize coherence time in superconducting quantum devices.

Abstract: We present a detailed characterization of the structure and evolution of differentially rotating plasmas driven on the MAGPIE pulsed-power generator (1.4 MA peak current, 240 ns rise-time). The experiments were designed to simulate physics relevant to accretion discs and jets on laboratory scales. A cylindrical aluminium wire array Z pinch enclosed by return posts with an overall azimuthal off-set angle was driven to produce ablation plasma flows that propagate inwards in a slightly off-radial trajectory, injecting mass, angular momentum, and confining ram pressure to a rotating plasma column on the axis. However, the plasma is free to expand axially, forming a collimated, differentially rotating axial jet that propagates at $\approx 100$ km/s. The density profile of the jet corresponds to a dense shell surrounding a low-density core, which is consistent with the centrifugal barrier effect being sustained along the jet's propagation. We show analytically that, as the rotating plasma accretes mass, conservation of mass and momentum implies plasma radial growth scaling as $r \propto t^{1/3}$. As the characteristic moment of inertia increases, the rotation velocity is predicted to decrease and settle on a characteristic value $\approx 20$ km/s. 45. Probing sterile neutrino freeze-in at stronger coupling

Abstract: The regime of dark matter (DM) freeze-in at stronger coupling interpolates between freeze-in and freeze-out. It relies on Boltzmann-suppressed dark matter production, implying that the Standard Model bath temperature never exceeds the dark matter mass. In this work, we study this regime in the context of sterile neutrino dark matter, which can be sufficiently long-lived for a tiny sterile-active mixing. The sterile neutrino is assumed to couple to a real singlet scalar, providing for a thermal production mechanism of the former. We find that DM mass can range from GeV to tens of TeV consistently with all the constraints. The most interesting aspect of the consequent freeze-in phenomenology is that the sterile neutrino dark matter can be probed efficiently by both direct detection experiments and invisible Higgs decay at the LHC., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, formulas corrected

46. Dynamic flexoelectric instabilities in nematic liquid crystals

Abstract: Electro-hydrodynamic phenomena in liquid crystals constitute an old but still very active research area. The reason is that these phenomena play the key role in various applications of liquid crystals and due to the general interest of physical community to out-of-equilibrium systems. Nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) are ideally representative for such investigations. Our article aims to study theoretically the linear NLCs dynamics. We include into consideration orientation elastic energy, hydrodynamic motion, external alternating electric field, electric conductivity and flexoelectric polarization. We analyze the linear stability of the NLC film, determining dynamics of perturbations with respect to the homogeneous initial state of the NLC. For the purpose we compute eigen-values of the evolution matrix for a period of the external alternating electric field. These eigen-values determine the amplification factors for the modes during the period. The instability occurs when the principal eigen-value of the evolution matrix becomes unity by its absolute value. The condition determines the threshold (critical field) for the instability of the uniform state. It turns out that one might expect various types of the instability, only partially known and investigated in the literature. Particularly, we find that the flexoelectric instability may lead to two-dimensionally space modulated patterns exhibiting time oscillations. 48. Two-dimensional turbulence in a finite box

Abstract: We present theory of two-dimensional turbulence excited by an external force in thin fluid films on scales larger than the film thickness. The principal feature of two-dimensional turbulence is the tendency of producing motions of larger and larger scales thanks to the nonlinear interaction. The tendency leads to formation of the so-called inverse cascade and, at some conditions, of big coherent vortices. We discuss the mean velocity profile of the coherent vortices and the flow fluctuations on the background of the mean velocity for different regimes. We demonstrate that the regime of strongly interacting fluctuations leads to an anisotropic scaling inside the coherent vortices.

49. Correlations of fluctuations of two-dimensional flow forced by a random force on top of a shear flow

Abstract: We examine fluctuations of vorticity excited by an external random force in two-dimensional fluid in the presence of a strong external shear flow. The problem is motivated by the analysis of big coherent vortices appearing as a consequence of the inverse energy cascade in a finite box at large Reynolds numbers. We develop the perturbation theory for calculating nonlinear corrections to correlation functions of the flow fluctuations assuming that the external force is short correlated in time. We analyze corrections to the pair correlation function of vorticity and some moments. The analysis enables one to establish validity of the perturbation theory for laboratory experiments and numerical simulations.

50. Correlations of vorticity inside a coherent vortex

Abstract: We examine fluctuations of vorticity inside the coherent vortex, appearing as a consequence of the inverse energy cascade in two-dimensional turbulence. Temporal and spacial correlations can be characterized by the pair correlation function. The interaction between the fluctuations leads to non-zero value of the third moment of vorticity. We examine the pair correlation function and the third moment for the model where the pumping is short correlated in time. We find explicit expressions for the Gaussian spacial correlation function of the pumping force. They confirm the general predictions obtained earlier.
