Background: Considering the importance of leadership in the e-learning of students in higher education, this study aimed to model the development of e-learning based on educational leadership.Method: The study was conducted in 2024 on members of the nursing education, educational technology, and educational planning faculties of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. The study used an exploratory mixed-method approach with semi-structured interviews of 15 purposively selected participants. Data analysis in the qualitative section was carried out using triple-coding via the MaxQDA 2020 software, while the quantitative section was analyzed through the structural equation modeling approach and measurement of item loadings using the PLS software. Data was collected using a researcher-made questionnaire from 335 randomly selected members of the statistical population.Results: The qualitative part included five dimensions of e-learning development based on educational leadership. These dimensions included leadership and management of education in universities, organizational factors, technological infrastructure in universities, human factors, and curriculum structure. Based on the results of the quantitative analysis, the highest priority was given to the component of support from senior managers while the lowest priority was for the reward system component. The model was validated by confirmatory factor analysis, with all dimensions of the model being valid.Conclusion: Educational leadership plays a critical role in e-learning development, which can be enhanced through collaboration and mentorship.

Learning Development is founded on multidisciplinary partnerships and collaboration, which can make it difficult for practitioners to recognise leadership in themselves and have it recognised by others, stymieing progression and confidence. This study aims to explore what leadership looks like in a collaborative, communitydriven, third space field of practice, and how Learning Development practitioners might recognise leadership in themselves and enact it in practice. Based on based on semi-structured interviews, a phenomenological approach is taken to explore the perceptions and experiences of 20 participants who self-identify as Learning Developers with an interest in leadership. Four key themes emerged from the analysis: Being in the role; Being part of a team; Being part of a community; and Taking a wider view. Each indicates how leadership in Learning Development is values-driven, social, networked, critical, and operates on the three levels of team, community, and field. The interrelationships between these are expressed as a model for strategic influence driven by collaborative connections, and findings suggest that practitioners act as a hub through which knowledge and connections can flow. Given the challenges currently facing the higher education sector, it is vital that institutions are able to harness these crucial roles to remain flexible, responsive, and effective. This study provides a means for recognition and advancement in fields that lack the clear progression routes of academic and professional services colleagues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This opinion piece argues that Design Thinking (DT) can facilitate a more empathetic and student-centred approach to service development and problem-solving in Learning Development (LD). While DT is already established within higher education, we argue it is still underutilised, especially in the context of LD. We start by unpacking the methodologies, tools, and practices that are brought together under the umbrella of DT and address the tensions inherent in adapting processes that have evolved largely out of business. We argue that by bringing the learner-centred values of Learning Development (LD) to the practices of DT, there is ample scope to embrace the creativity, innovation, and collaboration inherent in DT and to develop new LD practices that have the potential to involve learners more fundamentally in developing both our services and the scholarship of LD. It is in this context that DT can have a transformative impact on the practice of LD.

In 2012, three members of staff were recruited by the University of Strathclyde to sit in a room and talk to students. That was the whole of the plan. That is not how this story ends. The talking was supposed to ‘help’ students to do things ‘right’. That is not what we spoke about. That year, the student-facing part of the Centre for Academic Practice and Learning Enhancement (CAPLE) established in 1987, which at its height consisted of six permanent academics with varied research interests within the, then emergent, field of Learning Development (LD), was replaced by a generic Study Skills Service, staffed by LD practitioners with a considerable collective experience and who shared a vision that was more critical and looked to a more authentically (learning) developmental approach (Asher, 2024). In so doing, the university had created a service model which we would spend the next nine years dismantling (or, to be more accurate, redeveloping). What follows is our story. The story of how the Learner Development Service (LDS) came into being, and how the spaces and places we have inhabited (both hostile and hospitable) have shaped our practices (Gravett et al., 2023) and how, in June 2022, we took up residency in a dedicated LDS Centre designed by us for us. To date, we have occupied three physical locations and been positioned under three different university services. These spaces and places have defined what we could do but they have also informed the design of our current physical, virtual and conceptual environment, as this paper details. This session highlighted the need for Learning Development practitioner resilience and perseverance in difficult circumstances. It foregrounds the usefulness of initiating, developing, and nurturing productive and mutually rewarding professional relationships with academic departments, course leaders and individual academics in order to advance the growth of Learning Development provision in institutions.

What happens when you cannot get the buy-in from your colleagues and the workload is driving you mad? In this presentation we showed what we do to disrupt and rewrite the game. Using a fictional scenario, the wise three guided you through the trials and tribulations of embedded support for key academic skills. You were invited to share your experiences in advance of the conference so our agony aunts can come up with ideas and suggestions to help you succeed in your role. Academic skills are most successful when embedded within the curriculum (Coulson et al., 2021; Wyatt, 2011). However, in our experience getting buy-in from academic staff and professional colleagues can be difficult. Engaging students with an active teaching approach can be even harder (Armellini et al., 2021; Hicks and Sinkinson, 2021). Using the model of Integrated Learner Support (ILS) developed at the University of Northampton for undergraduate support (Library and Learning Services, 2022), the workshop highlighted different approaches that can be used to navigate through difficulties, and offered potential solutions to collaborative working between Learning Developers and Academic Librarians.

The ALDinHE Artificial Intelligence (AI) Community of Practice (CoP) was established in the summer of 2023. It has an international membership of over 200 Learning Developers. The CoP meets monthly to discuss an AI-related topic. Since its inception, topics have included organisational approaches to AI, AI in assessment, maths and statistics, and the use of AI in Learning Development tutorials. The group is keen to create an opportunity to share current projects, approaches, and thinking. This wildcard session replicated a world café-style event on a smaller scale. It required a large room. Tables were hosted by colleagues from Abertay University, Bournemouth University, De Montfort University, the University of Manchester, the University of Northampton, and Spurgeon’s College. Each host led a 15-minute session, sharing their AI-related project with delegates seated around the table, which included a short presentation followed by an opportunity for delegates to share their views and exchange ideas. After 15 minutes, the delegates moved to another table. Within the hour, the delegates rotated around three tables. It was hoped that delegates would attend the session to expand their understanding of AI. Delegates who use AI in their day-to-day work had an opportunity to share their experiences, while delegates who were less experienced could expand their understanding and discuss with their peers the challenges and opportunities that AI brings to Learning Development.

Did you know that only 7.7% of new Learning Developers are taught how to conduct a one-to-one tutorial, and only 38.5% are taught how to lead a workshop? (all data according to our survey: Coulson & Crofts, 2023). Despite this, nearly half (45.6%) of new Learning Developers have had the opportunity to complete a Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert) in Teaching in Higher Education, which is not tailored for such an expert role. Kate and Matt met at #ALDCon23 in Portsmouth and discussed how new community members develop their expertise. Matt is a new Learning Developer, and Kate has worked in Learning Development for over a decade; they recognised that there was a gap in the ALDinHE CPD provision and agreed to find out if this was true. This presentation outlined the results of a survey they designed and shared with the ALDinHE community in November 2023. This online survey asked new and established Learning Developers about their experiences of CPD, including what was useful, what they experienced and what would have benefitted them. The survey showed a clear gap in Continued Professional Development (CPD) provision for Learning Developers. Kate and Matt are now in the process of designing a CPD framework that not only meets the needs of new Learning Developers but also enhances the skills and knowledge of more experienced colleagues. Participants had the opportunity to contribute their own experiences of CPD to the group to enhance further the quantitative data collected in the survey. As part of this session and beyond, Kate and Matt are keen to include community members in the design process, including being critical friends, designing and contributing resources and teaching development sessions within the framework.

In recent years, Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) has become the topic of debate within higher education generally, within institutions (their official response and approach), within subject areas (how to utilise within subject teaching) and within the professional sphere of Learning Development. In the summer of 2023, an Association for Learning Development in Higher Education (ALDinHE) Community of Practice was established, and now, it has over 200 members from the UK, Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand. This group meets monthly to discuss all aspects of Gen AI, and this mini keynote will share how Learning Developers are engaging (or not) with Gen AI. The session will be open and friendly. Designed to enable colleagues to discuss their challenges, avoidance or how they embrace AI within their practice. Prompt Questions 1) Are you engaging with Artificial Intelligence (AI)? If so, how? If not, why not? 2) Should Learning Developers be engaging with AI? If so, how? 3) What could ALDinHE do to support your (potential) engagement with AI?

The way universities frame Learning Development (LD) has profound implications for the field’s pedagogy, status, autonomy and evolution. These variables affect the value that LD releases to staff and students. Framing involves ‘foregrounding certain perspectives and ruling out others’ to characterise a phenomenon (Jones, 2010, p.242). Learning developers’ ‘palpable reluctance’ to advocate for their expertise (Webster, 2022, p.181) contributes to the field often being framed externally. This session guided attendees on how to constructively challenge and redefine the framings at university level, using my doctoral data (Johnson, 2023). It included analysis of framing discourse about LD on UK universities’ websites, of the value of LD to students and staff in one university, and of how the two related. LD can be framed as a combination of skills development, human development and subject-embedded instruction (Hallett, 2010). The university website discourse lacked quantity and detail about the embedded framing, while strongly representing the skills framing. The skills framing correlated with stakeholders perceiving LD as delivering functional (financial) value, while the humanistic framing added social and emotional value. Only the embedded framing encouraged perceptions of LD as adding knowledge – a.k.a. epistemic value (terminology from Sheth et al., 1991, adapted for higher education [HE] by LeBlanc and Nguyen, 1999). I therefore argued LD teams should advocate for a reframing of their work which better calibrates and explains all three discourses. As the stakeholder data illustrated, this enhanced perception increases students’ and staff’s inclination to engage with LD (conditional value), leading to greater value release.

This lightning talk explored the conceptualisation, implementation and impact of integrated assessment workshops within the University of Essex nursing programmes. These courses admit a high proportion of students from diverse and ‘non-traditional’ backgrounds (Wong, 2018; Gill, 2023), including a significant majority of mature students (82.5%), many of whom do not have recent experience of formal UK education settings. Although nursing students generally have a strong commitment to their future professional identities, their student and academic identities may be less secure (Thomas, Hovdhaugen and Sweetman, 2023). To address these challenges, learning development (LD) and nursing lecturers collaborated to develop and implement team-taught integrated assignment workshops across the curriculum to support students in making sense of assessment requirements and applying marking criteria to their own work. Grounded in ALDinHE values (ALDinHE, 2023) and the concepts of academic and social integration (Tinto, 1975, 2017), the workshops aim to demystify HE assessment practices and clarify the tacit knowledge required for students to develop autonomy, self-efficacy and self-regulation in their approach to academic assignments (Hawe, Lightfoot and Dixon, 2019). The collaborative, dialogic approach to exemplar analysis (Carter et al. 2018; Merrydew and East, 2022) supports academic and social integration, and also engages students in developing and delivering constructive feedback; an essential professional skill (Nursing and Midwifery Council, 2018). Initially, we expected that supporting students’ ability to interpret and apply marking criteria would increase first-submission pass rates and generate higher marks overall. Two pilot sessions implemented in 2022-23 showed extremely promising results for both aims. Consequently, further workshops have been implemented across the wider curriculum with the extended aims of achieving an increase in good degrees and reducing BAME awarding gaps over the next three years. A successful version of this 5-minute talk was presented at the University of Essex Education Away Day in October 2023.

The number of students studying through transnational educational (TNE) arrangements at UK higher education institutions (HEIs) has grown considerably over the last decade. Universities UK (2022), drawing on 2020/21 data, reported that 162 HEIs engaged in TNE arrangements with 228 countries. TNE provision encompasses diverse delivery methods, including dual awards, joint awards, double degrees, and franchised or validated arrangements. HEIs grapple with enormous operational complexities in delivering partnership course arrangements. One fundamental challenge is delivering partnership courses that reflect meaningful collaborative work between host and partnership institutions (producing more engaging, creative, and inclusive learning experiences), while also ensuring parity of high-quality educational provision between the institutions. This session was intended to facilitate discussion around how partnerships can navigate these complexities, build a climate of respectful and open dialogue, and successfully deliver high quality, innovative environments for all learners. In doing so, it centred around three core questions: • How can HEIs involve partners in more meaningful, sustainable ways in educational provision? • How might TNE work help HEIs understand their own internal partnerships more clearly? • Where could or should TNE provision in higher education go from here?

Educational provision within transnational partnerships arrangements has come under increased scrutiny in recent years. This lightning talk focused on the creation of a Professional Development Series (PDS) initiative in the transnational educational partnership work at London Metropolitan University designed to strengthen cooperative, dialogic practice and to embed a strong communities of practice approach (Wenger, 1998) within partnership work. The PDS programme ran in the autumn of 2023 with hourly sessions roughly twice a month. It sought to bring together partnership educators from all backgrounds (including frontline teaching educators, library staff educators and educators in quality and governance) and included education-focused sessions (‘Evaluating the quality of learning and teaching’ and ‘Supporting learners who are struggling with their studies’), research-focused sessions (‘Understanding research ethics’ and ‘Exploring quantitative research’), graduation-focused sessions (‘Embedding employability in HE curricula’), and a session dedicated to partnership work (‘Working successfully in partnerships’). Conroy’s lightning talk outlined the starting points and principles underlying the PDS before discussing how to design and run Learning Development initiatives in transnational education, including points around initial reconnaissance work, pragmatics, tone, and how to foster dialogue and interaction within session spaces. Attention then turned to evaluating what may amplify or diminish the success and impact of such programmes and finally raised discussion points intended to spur debate among conference delegates around the boundaries, parameters, and desirable points of emphasis for Learning Development initiatives in transnational educational provision.

Research into academic literacy or literacies, however the term is defined, and how the field relates to disciplinary practice, has been debated in recent decades (Lillis and Scott, 2007; Lillis, 2019). Consideration of academic literacies is also a key component of the Learning Development community as the profession has evolved and developed its own identity. Is the term defined as ‘literacy’ or ‘literacies’? Is it a core component of Learning Development practice, or is it more tied to disciplinary and curriculum-based delivery? By understanding the literature around the definition and the development and application of academic literacies, can we consider how this relates to current perceptions and understanding of the field in a Learning Development context and what impact it may have on student learning? This workshop provided participants with the opportunity to hear about current research being undertaken by the ALDinHE research virtual Community of Practice (vCoP) to investigate our current understanding of academic literacies, how they are (or it is, if considered a singular literacy) perceived across the Learning Development community, and how we might measure its impact on our practice and student learning. For simplicity within this paper, academic literacies will be referred to as a plural form. Due to the historical creation of Learning Development teams in response to sector changes in higher education, this workshop provided participants with the opportunity to hear about the current research on academic literacies. Participants were also able to discuss their own experiential views to develop a shared understanding of how we may apply this understanding to practice, and what the impact on our work may be. The workshop aimed to help define our understanding of academic literacies—both in terms of the literature and in practice—and take away ideas and examples of practice that we can apply in our own work.

This research was conducted as an effort to address an issue regarding the decline in motivation for learning and practicing piano in intermediate-level piano classes at a music college. This has led to a stagnation in students' practical piano skills in specific piano techniques and theoretical abilities. The researcher proposes the development of learning through six-hand piano, with repertoire material created by the researcher entitled 'Explore'. This study applies the Robert K. Yin model of the case study method, conducted in three stages: Design, Execution, and Analysis. Sample selection utilized case-based sampling, involving three students from the class. Data collection included semi-structured interviews, observational analysis, document analysis, and literature review. To ensure the validity of the interview data, this study additionally employed Focus on Group Discussions (FGD). The analysis of the data encompassed within-case analysis, drawing conclusions, and comparison against theory. The findings in this research were identified as follows: Firstly, musical knowledge. Students gained a good understanding that enhanced their skills in several piano techniques, also music structure and form in repertoire. Secondly, several character values were identified based on the formulation of the 18 pillars of national character, which were observed throughout the learning process until its completion. These values were curiosity, responsibility, cooperation, discipline, hardwork, also friendly and communicative. These character values cultivate students' motivation to learn and practice the piano, thereby fostering musical knowledge

The need for universities to effectively support students identifying as Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Colour (BIPoC) remains a pressing element of strategies to close awarding gaps. Within overall support packages, the contribution of Learning Developers merits investigation, since these staff are often responsible for nurturing growth in students’ academic abilities. Through this small-scale, exploratory, qualitative study, we sought to better understand how Learning Developers can contribute to narrowing awarding gaps by exploring the benefits of and barriers to students engaging with Learning Development (LD). These benefits and barriers were elicited in interviews with twelve BIPoC students within one school in the Humanities and Social Sciences faculty in a UK university. The study explored their experiences of the value of LD interactions and how it might be enhanced. Aspects deemed valuable emerged broadly as anticipated, centring around how Learning Developers assisted students to learn academic practices such as: decoding assessment instructions and marking rubrics, referencing, breaking down tasks, and feedback uptake. More specifically relevant to BIPoC students, however, was the desirability of a flexible approach to the number and length of LD tutorials, enabling them to build relationships, understand guidance, and ask questions. Secondly, they mentioned the need to see ethnic diversity represented in the LD staff base and amongst student champions for LD. These factors were noted as good practice when evident, but open to further improvement. We conclude that whilst effective foundations were in place, the task of supporting BIPoC students remains one for ongoing reflection and action.

Sports education students often complain that factory-made takraw ball materials are difficult to use and cause foot pain. This study aims to determine the development of takraw ball learning media to determine its convenience level. The subjects of this research were MAB POR UNISKA students in regular class B 2020, and the data collection instrument used was a questionnaire given to material experts, media experts, and Sepak takraw course lecturers to test the quality of rubber rattan takraw balls. The development of the takraw ball was carried out and adapted from the research and development (R&D) method, which consists of several stages following the steps of Bord and Gall, including identification of potential and problems, data collection, a simple takraw ball product design, design validation, design revision, product trial, and final product revision. The results of the assessment of simple takraw balls in Sepak takraw learning include: the material expert assessment gives a final average score of 96.3 with very interesting criteria, the media expert gives a final average score of 80.6 with very interesting criteria, and the course instructor gives a score of 90.83 with extremely good criteria. The product trial results showed an average final score of extremely good attractiveness.

Play and learn, or learn while having fun. Unfortunately, in today's achievement-oriented society, education is all about getting a student to complete a predetermined task on time. This pressure can be very stressful for students, especially if they themselves are perfectionists and want to do their best, and fear failure (repeating a term) and the feeling of underachievement when compared to the abilities of their peers. The "Juggling for Effective Learning" course has already been offered six times to students at Óbuda University. The primary reason for the course was to help students who have a disability, primarily a learning disability (dyslexia or dysgraphia). However, students who are curious about the course are also welcome to attend.

It is difficult to teach complex topics such as academic research to student cohorts who are widely heterogeneous in prior knowledge, learning goals, and learning preferences. Exploratory, quest-like approaches show promise for increasing engagement, personalization, and autonomy, however, there is a lack of empirical data on which, if any, aspects of gamification can benefit learning. This paper presents analytics and qualitative responses to a Choose Your Own Adventure for postgraduate design of research projects. It focusses on non-linear navigation for self-directed personalization, digital badges, and the role of narrative within a gamified learning tool. Results highlight high user attrition, effective personalization of learning, high acceptance of gamification approaches, and much lower interest in some gamification elements, contributing value to the pedagogy of learning and teaching research skills.

Research on the use of learning media has great significance in helping teachers and students overcome learning challenges. The latest innovation in this research is the development of Android-based gamification learning media targeted at high school grade X students in learning Indonesian hikayat text. The research aims to analyze the need for learning media for teachers and students, and develop the media. The research method used is research and development with a modified approach from Borg & Gall adapted by Sugiyono. Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, observation, and documentation, with product validation by three experts. The subjects of this research were teachers and students from SMAN 1 Kalasan, Sleman, Yogyakarta. The results of the needs analysis showed the need for learning media that is more interesting, interactive, and in accordance with current technology. Meanwhile, the evaluation results of the Android-based gamification media showed positive responses from teachers and students, with increased student engagement and effectiveness of material delivery by teachers, as well as students' interest in learning and better understanding of hikayat text.

This opinion piece discusses the importance of positive reframing as a tool for Learning Development (LD) tutors to use in one-to-one tutorials. The piece emphasises the impact of positive reframing on students’ confidence with their academic skills. The piece will explore the theoretical background of positive reframing, deriving from cognitive restructuring. Connecting positive reframing to the PERMA model highlights its potential in enhancing academic focus. It will then introduce two approaches for using positive reframing in tutorials, emphasising the importance of authenticity in communication. The opinion piece concludes by encouraging LD tutors to consider incorporating positive reframing into their session to benefit both students and LD tutors.

During the UK COVID-19 lockdowns (2020–21), new approaches to online teaching and learning were developed in all fields of higher education. As we move, we must hope, out of the most critical phases of the pandemic, the question arises: what should be retained of this work? In some quarters, anxiety has been voiced that important potential lessons are being jettisoned in favour of a return to 'business as usual'. Taking the first WoW Special Issue's focus on experiments in teaching and learning in visual culture as my focus, and in particular those detailed in Rebecca Bell's article 'Untrammelled ways: Reflecting on the written text, nourishment and care in online teaching', this article will argue that to fully learn from the pedagogical experiments undertaken during the UK lockdowns and to protect safe and caring spaces for critical thinking, the pandemic needs to be understood as linked to environmental and climate emergency. This study aims to identify indigenous knowledge or local wisdom of Sasak Tribe in Lombok Island, which has the potential of integration into Biology learning, especially in Phase E, to support Merdeka Belajar policy. This research used a qualitative descriptive method, in which description was used to analyze and interpret data. The data were collected through interviews, documentation, and literary studies to be analyzed using triangulation technique, coding, and interpretation. The results of this study showed that the indigenous knowledge of the Sasak Tribe had the potential of integrated into Biology learning, especially in Phase E, namely Biodiversity substance with the local wisdom of Kemaleq, Loang Gali, Mangku Gawar, Loh Dewa, and Loh Makem, Bau Nyale, Weaving Sesek, Medicinal Plants and Bale Tani/Ketapahan, Ecosystem material with the local wisdom of Kemaleq, Loang Gali, Mangku Gawar, Loh Dewa and Loh Makem, Bau Nyale and Ngaro/Nenggala. The concept of Waste and Natural Materials relates to the local wisdom of Belulut and Ngaro/Nenggala. In contrast, the concept of Biotechnology Innovation related to the local wisdom of Poteng Rekat. From this arranged framework, it is hoped to be utilized in developing teaching materials, modules, worksheets, questions and tasks development, and other instruments in Biology subject.

Abstract/Summary: This article explores the academic and personal development outcomes from a two-week, University-wide sustainability hackathon conducted online. Data was gathered from 18 out of 23 participants through a post-hackathon questionnaire featuring 24 structured questions. These questions covered various aspects, including participants' prior work experience, motivations for participating in the hackathon, shifts in their attitudes toward sustainability, perspectives on interdisciplinary collaboration, and acquired skills. Quantitative data underwent analysis using, as appropriate, Spearman's correlation and Mann-Whitney tests, while qualitative responses were examined via thematic analysis. The results showed an improved awareness and appreciation of several personal and professional skills, encompassing ideation, product development, leadership, resilience, and teamwork. Additionally, they highlighted an increased appreciation for interdisciplinary collaboration, fostered through interaction with students from diverse academic backgrounds.

Purpose - This study aims to determine the learning rate of Islamic religious education in the new-normal era after the COVID-19 pandemic in the coastal areas of Serang Regency. The constantly growing use of information technology has made most students reluctant to go to school. Design/methods/approach – This study is qualitative research. This research approach is descriptive. The data collection techniques used were observation, interview, and documentation. The number of informants in this study included students, teachers, and the community as parents of students. The respondent selection technique used purposive sampling, where the number of informants was 90% of the total sample. Findings - The findings in this study have included the use of a home visit strategy for post-pandemic learning continuity, where most students were reluctant to go to school and many students were contaminated with online games. The home visit method is a real form of visiting students one by one to provide understanding to parents and students about online learning, as well as a form of direct monitoring of the student learning process. Research implications/limitations – This research highlights how the educational process of the new normal era after the COVID-19 pandemic was in the coastal area of Serang Regency. Supposedly, the coastal area is a geographical location far from urban conditions, making the infrastructure aspect still very limited. Originality/value - This study presents the serious impact that occurred in the coastal area of Serang Regency when the learning process took place after the COVID-19 pandemic. Ranging from the personal pick-up strategy to numerous students who were reluctant to go to school to many students who were contaminated by online games.

As a growing and maturing profession, Learning Developers are still crafting their space within their institutions and face constant conversations with academic and professional colleagues, as well as students, as to who we are and what we offer. Whilst we are protective of the terms we use, and resist using ‘study skills’ to describe our work in favour of the concept of Academic Literacies, it seems that the rest of the academy is slow to follow suit. Working on a joint project with our Careers service to develop an institutional capabilities framework really highlighted the difference in terminology used, and the sense that, no matter how much I tried, academic and professional colleagues were unwilling or unable to engage with our service offer as delivering anything other than ‘study skills’, despite our insistence on using Academic Literacies to refer to our embedded teaching. It made me wonder whether the terminology matters or might even be counterproductive. Does the term ‘academic literacies’ serve as a barrier to staff and students, even when intended to explain the pedagogical approach that informs our practice? Our students won’t necessarily understand what academic literacies or Learning Development means, which results in using two names to describe our service – one a student-friendly ‘Skills@Library’ name, and the other ‘Learning Development’, intended to demonstrate that we are an academic unit that staff can consider peers in curriculum development and design. Does this approach just serve to dilute our offer to both parties, and cause confusion as to what we actually do? Through three small open discussions, held as part of the mini keynote session, we explored how LDers refer to their service, why they have chosen those terms, and how they think they are received by their colleagues. With the aim of identifying barriers that this terminology causes for engagement from both staff and students, the following questions were used as prompts for the discussions. Questions: • Is using the term ‘study skills’ really that problematic? Does it truly challenge our professional identity, and if so, is that challenge significant? • How do you refer to the service that you run? • How do your cross-institution colleagues describe your service? • What have you done to challenge their assumptions?

Continuing from the presentation in 2022 (see Thomas and Mansfield, 2022), the University of Northampton Learning Development Team used this session to share how the second year of their Learning Development Mentor Project has progressed. Our session discussed the impact of utilising student mentors on the provision of our service with the objective of reducing barriers to accessing support. Our nine Learning Development Mentors (LDMs) replicate that of Price et al.’s (2018) Student Learning Assistant Model where we offer support to students from any disciplinary subject via drop-ins, tutorials and other formal events. All LDMs are current second- and third-year students and work four or six hours a week to supplement the LD provision by offering a peer perspective to academic and study skills. Furthermore, they are seeping into spaces unable to be penetrated by Learning Development. The talk evaluated how the role was co-created with the LD Mentors and the benefits and impact it has had on the LD provision. We discussed how the Learning Development tutors, mentors and users of the service differentiate the roles. In addition, the impact of the following projects which the LDMs have been involved with was considered: • University of Northampton Plagiarism Awareness Course (UNPAC). • Social media and marketing outputs. • Pathways project to support students’ understanding of Learning Development and how to access the service. • Other institutional events such as open days, exam ready project and many more. • The conference presentation will describe how we have navigated the project and how measuring impact with the project is not always straightforward.

Drawing upon a section of the co-created Learning Development (LD) Manifesto (ALDinHE, 2018), in this workshop we invite participants to come and be creative – and imagine beyond what Learning Developers do now into what they may do in the future, inspired by the metaverse. The metaverse is a science fiction hypothetical iteration from the book ‘Snow Crash’ (Stephenson, 1992) set in a near future where the global political structure has collapsed (!), a tiny number of super-corporations control most aspects of life, and the rich spend their time in the metaverse (Ball, 2022). Today the metaverse is the Facebook-owned platform Meta, which Mark Zuckerberg (2021) explains as “an embodied internet where you’re in the experience, not just looking at it”. Rather than our current 2D, screen-based internet, the metaverse will be a 3D virtual space, accessed by either a VR headset or AR (augmented reality) glasses, which superimpose a layer of digital information on top of the visible world. What impact might this have on LD practices, knowledge and beliefs? The metaverse is highly contentious, and we invite Learning Developers to take the challenge and look to possible futures and their potential value to the sector. The educational possibilities of the metaverse will build from the UNESCO (2022) ‘Reimagining education’ discussion paper. There is also a need to focus the conversation on the ethics of the metaverse (Fielding, 2021), to consider how we can embed safety, privacy and inclusion at the core. It is fair to argue that these values closely align with LD, yet in the metaverse there is the potential for violence, harassment, isolation and bullying. How can we promote and enhance equality, diversity and inclusion in this space? We will invite participants (who will work in teams) to co-create a #Take5 blogpost with us from our mapping and debates. No technology is needed for the session, and no previous knowledge of the metaverse Our manifesto What does Learning Development do? • It contextualises, embeds and maps knowledge, and contributes to learning gain • It teaches how to learn and scaffolds learning • It widens opportunity, not participation; it can trouble what we mean by participation • It infiltrates throughout the university and operates in a 3rd space, connecting and • collaborating with the wider community • It works with the hidden curriculum • It legitimises the different forms of knowledge our students have • It levels the playing field and widens the academy

The Learning Development team at the University of Northampton has been developing research projects to understand the extent and potential causes of award gaps (Coulson and Loddick, 2020; Loddick and Coulson, 2020; Coulson, Loddick and Rice, 2021). However, the team was not prepared for other findings that emerged from this research related to the Black award gap. Firstly, Black students who engage with a tutorial can see an improvement of up to 4 sub grades. Secondly, analysing award gap data revealed that the Black award gap could be reduced by 50% by eliminating non-submission of assignments. This mini keynote outlined the projects that have been developed: a project with Black students within the Foundation degree framework to ascertain why they might not submit their assignments and a second project to engage ‘Black Student Advocates’ will also be outlined. The challenges of this work were also shared. Questions posed: • How has your institution approached the Black award gap? • How might you contribute to the reduction (or elimination) of the Black award gap? • Can we eliminate the Black award gap?

The aim of this practitioner’s mini keynote was to reflect on the experiences of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and learning development (LD) practitioners from across UK higher education institutions to explore how we can collaborate to benefit students’ educational experiences and outcomes. Despite different pedagogical and professional contexts and identities, both EAP and LD practitioners aspire to develop students’ understanding of, and engagement with, key academic and disciplinary literacies (McCulloch and Horak, 2019). Within many institutions, however, EAP and LD colleagues deliver provision separately – either to different cohorts or through different teaching models (pre- and in-sessional delivery, for example). Although this separation speaks to specific disciplinary identities and points of theoretical and pedagogical difference (see, for example, Wingate, 2012), it can cause duplication of content, confusion for students, and competing demands for institutional funding and support. Given increasing student numbers, widening diversity of student needs and experience, and funding concerns, it is more important than ever to understand how EAP and LD practitioners can collaborate in the best interests of our students. Prompt questions: • What opportunities for collaboration between EAP and LD colleagues are available at your institution, and what challenges or barriers have you experienced? • How can EAP and LD practitioners effectively collaborate while maintaining their professional identities? • How can effective collaboration between EAP and LD practitioners benefit student education experiences and outcomes?

An inclusive approach to teaching LGBTQ+ students in university is vital. LGBTQ+ people are more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers (Friedman et al., 2011; Miranda-Mendizábal et al., 2017; Craig et al., 2020). They suffer minority stress (Meyer, 2003) and are more likely to have experienced early trauma (Craig et al., 2020; Wang et al., 2021). Particular attention is needed for the most vulnerable LGBTQ+ students such as bisexual and transgender individuals (Gnan et al., 2019). Whilst literature exists on LGBTQ+ inclusive teaching (Moore, 2014; Mikulec, 2016), there is a considerable research gap specifically addressing the pedagogical potential of learning development as a vehicle for this. Building on the foundation of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and decolonisation, Trauma-Informed Pedagogy (TIP) acknowledges the barriers to learning faced by trauma-experienced students and promotes inclusive approaches (Baker, 2022). Using the TIP framework, the session invited delegates to consider how the trauma-informed educator can create and maintain a safe, inclusive and empowering learning space. We invited delegates to reflect on their own inclusive practices in relation to LGBTQ+ students and how to best support the needs of a group who can remain largely invisible. Using case studies, we explored how TIP approaches can be applied in a learning development context to benefit not only LGBTQ+ students, but the student body as a whole.

Established in 2005, the LearnHigher platform provides high quality, peer-evaluated resources which support students’ learning development. It was developed through a collaborative network of 16 institutions and is overseen by a working group who support and encourage the submission of resources. Following a summary of the past year and a demonstration of the submission process, the audience had the opportunity to reflect on LearnHigher and help shape its future. The authors aimed to hear about how LearnHigher had informed teaching and learning. This was a chance for the community to share experiences of using and submitting resources, and to consider ways to increase impact on professional development and practice. The session culminated in an open forum of discussion regarding future directions, enabling the community to shape how LearnHigher moves forward in 23-24 and beyond.

The Covid-19 Pandemic had (and continues to have) a significant worldwide impact on Higher Education (Watermeyer et al., 2021; Sharaievska et al., 2022). How Learning Development responded to this challenge varied considerably across the sector. Many of the challenges and solutions for Learning Development are represented in the Compendium of Innovative Practice: Learning Development in a Time of Disruption, a special issue of the Journal of Learning Development in Higher Education (JLDHE, 2021). The Compendium issue of JLDHE contained 102 peer-reviewed reflections, identifying numerous challenges and responses to teaching in Covid-19. This conference paper will share the findings of a research project that has systematically analysed all 102 contributions to the compendium. Each reflection was analysed using structural, topic and thematic coding to identify common responses and challenges to pandemic teaching. The findings of this study have identified a range of individual and shared challenges for both students and third space professionals. One of the core findings relates to the diversity of responses that have been designed to meet these challenges, with over 100 distinct pedagogic and technical solutions to pandemic teaching. From these, five core themes have emerged: emergency remote teaching; reflective practice and evaluation; pedagogy and technology support; collaboration and shared practice; and, course design for the long-term. This paper will reflect on implications for future practice in times of disruption and provide delegates with the opportunity to consider how it relates to their institutions.

There has been little research into student perceptions of learning development tutorials despite learning development having existed in most institutions for over twenty years. Analysis from annual demographic data from tutorial attendance at the University of Northampton shows that over 25% of tutorials are attended by students identifying as Black. More Black women use the LD provision than Black males and even fewer Black males under the age of 20 use the service. This mirrors the findings of Coulson and Loddick (2020) who acknowledged, in research on learning development and student attainment, that students from a Black ethnic background, particularly females, were more likely to attend tutorials. However, there has been little research into the reasons for this. This presentation concluded the findings of an internally funded collaborative project to explore the perceptions of Black students and learning development. Due to the nature of investigating a sensitive topic, it was deemed essential that a project assistant was employed who has lived experience and identifies as Black. The project assistant predominantly conducts the research with Black students and gains their perspectives during focus groups or interviews. The project has been planned to ensure that the project assistant influences the research by offering autonomy to design the project and recruit participants. It is hoped that this project will offer a unique perspective to inform learning development practice and provision. By the time of the conference the project will have finished and we will be able to offer an insight into the findings.

Because students’ leisure activities enrich the forms of knowledge in school, we can say that their implementation by teachers has an effect on students’ internal motivation and social needs. Leisure subject activities are part of teaching techniques that teachers use to motivate students for learning, which is why they should be seen as a component part of the teaching process. In North Macedonia, there are limited data regarding leisure activities outside the teaching process; however, very little has been researched on subject’s leisure activities. For this reason, we carried out a research where the objective of our research was oriented towards the level of implementation of leisure classroom activities during the learning process, and its correlation with students' motivation in the learning progress, aged 6-11 years old. So, the main hypothesis of this research was: The inclusion of leisure subject activities in specific learning situations affects the motivation of students for learning. In accordance with defined objectives, survey and interview techniques were applied in the research with N=100 teachers and =100students. Results showed a confirmation of the hypothesis, respectively that there is a strong correlation of implementation of leisure classroom activities and increase in students’ motivation for learning. The results obtained should serve to identify and overcome shortcomings in the implementation of leisure classroom activities that simultaneously have a great impact in motivation learning development of students in primary education.

A growing body of research has shown the positive relationship between student engagement and cognitive skills development among Latinx undergraduates at more selective institutions. However, despite the large proportion of Latinx transfer students at four-year institutions, they are relatively ignored in higher education literature. Using data from the 2012 NSSE, this study examined the effects of engagement on cognitive skills development among Latinx transfer students at more selective institutions compared to their Latinx non-transfer peers. Results showed Latinx transfer students were overall less engaged than their native peers. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses also indicated some notable differences. Specifically, student-faculty interaction positively predicted cognitive skills development for Latinx transfer students but not their native peers. Findings of this study demonstrate unique patterns of engagement and unique benefits associated with engagement for Latinx transfer students at more selective institutions, underscoring the importance of disaggregating data by transfer status among Latinx students. Learning Development is a field of practice concerned with supporting students to develop their study skills, including academic and assessment literacies. It is strongly rooted in values that are studentcentred, collaborative and emancipatory rather than remedial or deficit. However, in the wider dominant culture of UK HE institutions, Learning Developers are often placed in an implicitly hierarchical relationship with students, "giving advice and guidance", at odds with these values. Without a clear model for practice to help them enact their values in a student-centred and dialogic way, Learning Developers may risk pathologizing the student, depriving them of agency and expertise, in an overly prescriptive and instrumental approach to skills development. This paper explores formulation, a core skill in Clinical Psychology, and its applicability in Learning Development. Formulation is a method of integrating theory and practice, clinical expertise with the client’s own experience and insight, through its meaning to the client. With a focus on equality, person-centred practice and co-created meaning, it is well aligned to Learning Development values. This paper examines how formulation can be adapted for Learning Development one-to-one work and other forms of provision, and proposes a practical model, the Five Ps of LD, which integrates multiple perspectives with longitudinal, cross-sectional and socio-cultural factors into a holistic shared understanding of the Learning Development need. Learning innovation for future education often includes digital approaches to enhance learning and to contribute to the development of twenty-first-century skills. There is evidence that mobile learning provides positive outcomes. However, there is a recognized lack of research in the field of frameworks and models that contributes to highlighting mobile learning rewards. This study aims to investigate the main characteristics of a strategic framework for the adaption and sustainable use of mobile learning. This study is based on a systematic review of 15 investigations published between 2009 and 2018. An adaptation of the strategic management framework by Jauch and Glueck (Business policy and strategic management, McGraw-Hill, London, 1988) was developed to show the results. The framework has a pedagogical foundation. Leaders, teachers, learners, families, and community members are identified as the key pillars upholding and maximizing mobile learning. The proposed framework is envisaged to serve as a guide for the educational community in implementing sustainable mobile learning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
