Resistance to acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors have increased recently in South Brazil where the major weeds of flooded rice (barnyardgrass and weedy rice) have evolved resistance to imazapyr+imazapic. The aim of this research was to evaluate a growth medium for tissue regeneration of tillers in barnyardgrass, as well as an agar-based bioassays test (also from tillers) to detect susceptible and resistant biotypes of weedy rice and barnyardgrass to imazapyr+imazapic in vitro. Greenhouse experiments were conducted to detect ALS-resistant (R) and susceptible (S) weedy rice and barnyardgrass biotypes, and bioassays were carried out to evaluate an adequate growth medium for barnyardgrass tiller regeneration and determine the concentration of herbicide to distinguish R and S plants. The culture medium that provided a suitable barnyardgrass growth was MS 50% with the addition of benzylamino-purine. The tissue regeneration in vitro with the growth medium containing imazapyr+imazapic allowed to discriminate between R and S barnyardgrass and weedy rice plants. The concentration required for satisfactory control of susceptible barnyardgrass and weedy rice explants grown in vitro was 0.9 μM and 1.3 μM of imazapyr+imazapic herbicide, respectively. The bioassay in vitro using tiller regeneration provides an opportunity to predict effectively imazapyr+imazapic resistance in barnyardgrass and weedy rice.

A gasolina é uma mistura complexa de substâncias, dentre elas estão hidrocarbonetos como o benzeno, tolueno, etilbenzeno e xilenos (BTEX), sendo esses compostos emitidos para a atmosfera, com destaque ao benzeno, por ser comprovadamente carcinogênico. Objetivamos avaliar as concentrações de BTEX no ar de postos de revenda de combustíveis no Município do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, e calcular o risco de câncer associado a estas exposições. Foram realizados dois tipos de amostragem (fixa e móvel) adaptadas da metodologia nº 1.501 do Instituto Nacional de Segurança e Saúde Ocupacional (Estados Unidos), em seis postos de revenda de combustíveis na Zona Oeste da cidade. A amostragem fixa foi feita próxima às bombas de combustível, enquanto a móvel foi realizada através da coleta do ar na zona respiratória dos trabalhadores (frentistas), conforme estes se deslocavam pelo posto. As amostras foram analisadas por cromatografia gasosa com detecção por ionização em chama. Com os resultados das amostragens foram feitos os cálculos de risco à saúde, usando os indicadores Quociente de perigo (HQ) e Risco de câncer (CR), para avaliar os possíveis efeitos não-carcinogênicos e carcinogênicos, respectivamente, nos trabalhadores dos postos de revenda de combustíveis. As concentrações ambientais para a maioria dos compostos BTEX foram abaixo dos limites preconizados, menos para o benzeno, um composto carcinogênico, que apresentou concentrações muito acima dos limites, levando a altos valores de risco de câncer. Os resultados demonstraram que há riscos à saúde dos trabalhadores de postos de revenda de combustíveis, principalmente o risco de desenvolver câncer, devido à exposição excessiva ao benzeno.

Ryegrass management has been difficult by the occurrence of resistant biotypes to several herbicides with different action mechanisms. Since herbicides mixes and rotations are an important alternative for resistant weed management, the objective of this work was to evaluate the interaction of the dose of the herbicides glufosinate and atrazine on ryegrass control and its seeds’ quality exposed to their association. For this study, three experiments were carried out using factorial design in field, laboratory, and greenhouse conditions. Two factors (A and B) were evaluated in each experiment, where factor A and B represented the doses of glufosinate and atrazine, respectively. Ryegrass control was evaluated in field experiment, while germination percentage and Emergence Speed Index (ESI), were obtained in laboratory and greenhouse analyses, respectively. The data were submitted to variance analysis (P≤0.05) and the significant results were analyzed through response surface graphs. For ryegrass control data, the effect of the interaction was analyzed by the Colby method; glufosinate provides efficient ryegrass control, but its association with atrazine reduces the efficiency, being characterized as an antagonism between molecules. Glufosinate herbicide application, independent of atrazine presence, reduced the ryegrass seeds quality at the post-flowering stage.

Na cultura do trigo a dessecação em pré-colheita com herbicidas pode influenciar a produtividade e a qualidade fisiológica das sementes. O trabalho teve por objetivo quantificar a produtividade, a qualidade fisiológica e o resíduo em sementes de trigo. O delineamento experimental adotado foi em blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições, sendo que os tratamentos contaram de cultivares de trigo (BRS 177 e BRS Umbu); dessecação com herbicidas (2,4-D; paraquate; glifosato; glufosinato de amônio; metsulfuron metílico; e, testemunha); e, épocas de maturação (antes e após a maturação fisiológica). As variáveis analisadas foram o peso de mil sementes; peso hectolitro; número de antécios por espiga; produtividade; qualidade fisiológica das sementes, através dos testes de vigor e germinação; e, resíduos nas sementes, após a aplicação dos herbicidas em pré-colheita. A dessecação em pré-colheita com herbicida realizada em estádio posterior a maturidade fisiológica, em geral, não altera a qualidade fisiológica e a produtividade de trigo das cultivares BRS 177 e BRS Umbu. A aplicação de metsulfuron metílico e paraquate não apresentam efeitos residuais nos grãos independente da época de aplicação, enquanto a aplicação de glufosinato de amônio, glifosato e 2,4-D, quando aplicados anterior à maturidade fisiológica, geram níveis de resíduo nos grãos de trigo.

Plant growth analysis is useful for determining adequate management practices and exploring the maximum yield potential of cultivars or hybrids. Canola hybrids with resistance to herbicides have been studied and registered for Brazilian conditions, as they improve weed management in canola crops. This study evaluated the growth of canola hybrids resistant to triazine or imidazolinone herbicides compared to a sensitive hybrid. The experiment was conducted using a completely randomized design, with four replications, in a bifactorial scheme using three hybrids and six sampling times. The canola hybrids used were Hyola 571CL (resistant to imidazolinones), Hyola 555TT (resistant to triazines), and Hyola 61 (sensitive to both herbicides). Height, leaf area, and dry matter of roots, leaves, stems, and shoots of the plants were evaluated at 14, 28, 42, 56, 70, and 119 days after emergence (DAE). The physiological indices absolute growth rate, leaf area ratio, specific leaf area, and net assimilation rate were calculated, and yield indices evaluated. Compared to Hyola 61, the Hyola 555TT hybrid showed lower values of leaf dry matter at 70 DAE, absolute growth rate up to 56 DAE, and net assimilation rate at 14 and 28 DAE, and a higher leaf area ratio at 56 DAE, whereas the hybrid Hyola 571CL presented lower leaf area and lower leaf dry matter at 70 DAE. At flowering, compared to Hyola 61, the hybrid Hyola 571CL presents lower leaf area, and the hybrids Hyola 555TT and Hyola 571CL have lower leaf dry matter accumulation. Differences in the growth of canola hybrids Hyola 555TT, Hyola 571CL and Hyola 61 do not cause differences in their grain yield.

Resumo Introdução Este estudo avaliou alterações respiratórias, auditivas e citogenéticas em trabalhadores de um estaleiro em Angra dos Reis, no Estado do Rio de Janeiro, relacionadas à exposição de pintores a solventes, metais e ruído no ambiente de trabalho. Métodos Foram avaliados função pulmonar, perdas auditivas e índice de reconhecimento da fala, e alterações citogenéticas pelo teste de aberrações cromossômicas. Foram avaliados manganês e chumbo em sangue por espectrometria de absorção atômica. Os indicadores de efeito utilizados para chumbo foram ALAD e ALA-U, determinados por espectrofotometria e cromatografia líquida, respectivamente. Resultados Seis dos 9 trabalhadores avaliados apresentaram alteração funcional respiratória. Quase 70% dos 18 trabalhadores avaliados apresentaram audição reduzida, com associação entre PAIR e chumbo em sangue. O percentual médio de recuperação da ALAD foi de 32,9%, com médias de ALA-U de 1,7 mg g-1 creatinina, 4,65 µg dL-1 para Pb-S e 10 µg L -1 para Mn-S entre os trabalhadores. Foram observadas associações entre ALA-D ativada com Mn-S e com a presença de aberrações cromossômicas. As alterações citogenéticas identificadas foram aneuploidias, separação prematura centromérica e aberrações como formação de anéis, quebras e união de cromátides irmãs. Conclusão os trabalhadores do estaleiro apresentam alterações que podem ser associadas à exposição ocupacional.

Abstract: The objective of this work was to compare wild poinsettia (Euphorbia heterophylla) biotypes as to their morphological characteristics, as well as to determine their genetic similarity in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and to confront the light compensation point of susceptible biotypes and of biotypes with low-resistance level to glyphosate. Besides the morphology analysis, the study included the genetic characterization, by AFLP, of susceptible (GR50= 58.65 g ha-1 a.e.) biotypes and of biotypes with low resistance (GR50= 310.36 g ha-1 a.e.) to glyphosate. The competitive ability of the biotypes was inferred according to their light compensation point. The observed morphological characteristics do not allow to differentiate biotypes as to their geographical location, or their resistance level to glyphosate. The genetic analysis identified low genetic diversity among the 15 tested biotypes, with a large amount of subgroups. The biotypes with low resistance formed an isolated group. The susceptible biotypes showed the lowest values of light compensation point and, possibly, they have a greater competitive ability under low-luminosity conditions. The evaluated characteristics do not enable to differentiate genotypes with different levels of glyphosate resistance.

The Wild Poinsettia (Euphorbia heterophylla L.) has elevated potential to reduce the soybean yield and is a difficult to control plant due to herbicide resistance. The objectives of this study were to determine the changes in the photosynthetic physiological parameters, secondary metabolite levels, cellular damage, and antioxidant system activity in soybean plants and Wild Poinsettia biotypes with a low level of resistance or susceptibility to glyphosate in competition with soybeans. Two replacement series experiments were conducted in a greenhouse under competition between soybeans and the low-level resistant biotype (experiment I) or susceptible biotype (experiment II). The treatments consisted of different proportions of soybean plants and Wild Poinsettia [100:0 (pure stand of soybean), 50:50, and 0:100 (pure stand of Wild Poinsettia)] and different evaluation periods (the 2013/14 and 2014/15 growing seasons). The following parameters were analyzed: the chlorophyll, carotenoid (CRT), total phenol, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and lipid peroxidation levels and the catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme activity. Generally, competition between the soybeans and the Wild Poinsettia biotypes did not alter the photosynthetic parameters or the photosynthetic pigment levels of the crop. For the weed biotypes, competition with the soybeans negatively affected photosynthesis. Greater losses of chlorophylls and CRTs were observed for the susceptible biotype when in competition with soybeans, whereas the opposite trend was observed for the biotype with a low level of resistance. No cellular damage or alterations in antioxidant system enzyme activity was observed, which indicated a lack of oxidative stress.

The goosegrass ( Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn) is an annual plant that has a low - level resistance to glyphosate (LLRG), resulting in control failure in genetically modified soybean crops for resistance to this herbicide. Alleles related to resistance may cause changes in the plant biotype, such as inferior competitive ability. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluated the competitive ability of soybean crops and susceptible and resistant (LLRG) goosegrass biotypes. Replacement series experiments were conducted with soybean crops and goosegrass biotypes. The ratios of soybean to susceptible or resistant (LLRG) goosegrass plants were 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 and 0:100, with a total population of 481 plants m - 2 . The leaf area, plant height and shoot dry weight were evaluated at 40 days after emergence of the soybean crops and weeds. The soybean crop had superior competitive ability to the susceptible and resistant (LLRG) goosegrass biotypes. The soybean crop showed similar competitive ability in both competitions, either with the susceptible or resistant (LLRG) goosegrass biotypes. The intraspecific competition was more harmful to the soybean crop, while the interspecific competition caused greater damage to the goosegrass biotypes competing with the soybean crop

Ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) is the main winter weed of crops in Southern Brazil. High competitiveness, adaptability, widespread resistance to herbicides and seed dormancy make the plant a permanent problem. Herbicides, as well as plant growth regulators, can be used as a management option for ryegrass seed production, however there is no consensus among authors at which stage of the plant the application is most effective. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the production and physiological quality of ryegrass seeds in response to the application of herbicides and plant growth regulators in three stages of plant development (inflorescence emergence, flowering and fruit development). Each treatment consisted of applying two different doses of each of the active ingredients: ammonium glufosinate, clethodim, glyphosate, iodosulfuron-methyl, paraquat and 2,4-D (herbicides); ethephon and trinexapac-ethyl (plant growth regulators), still an untreated control, totaling 17 treatments for each stage of development. The experimental design used was randomized blocks, with three replications. The variables evaluated were: seed production (kg ha−1), thousand seed weight (g), viability (%), germination (%), first germination count (%), dormant seeds (%) and dead seeds (%). The ryegrass seed production reduced 100% with clethodim, glyphosate, ammonium glufosinate or paraquat applied in the inflorescence emergence or flowering stages. In the fruit development stage, all treatments (herbicides and plant growth regulators) caused deleterious effects on seed production, the greatest effect occurred with paraquat (95%). Paraquat, ammonium glufosinate and clethodim affected the physiological quality of the seeds when applied in fruit development stage. This research demonstrated that the application of herbicides in the ryegrass reproductive stage decreases its seedbank replenishment (natural re-sowing), with the potential to harm its progeny.

Resumo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar e comparar valores adaptativos dos biótipos de azevém (Lolium multiflorum) resistente e suscetível ao herbicida iodosulfuron e avaliar sua habilidade competitiva com o trigo (Triticum aestivum). Para avaliar o valor adaptativo, os biótipos foram semeados em vasos e coletados a cada 10 dias após a emergência, até os 80 dias. Em cada coleta, avaliaram-se estatura, área foliar e massa seca da parte aérea, e, a partir destas avaliações, foram calculadas variáveis indiretas para comparar o crescimento entre os biótipos. A habilidade competitiva foi determinada em experimento de série de substituição, tendo-se variado a proporção da cultura e do competidor. As proporções testadas foram: 100:0 (estande puro do trigo), 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 e 0:100% (estande puro do biótipo de azevém resistente ou suscetível); já as variáveis avaliadas foram área foliar e massa seca. Os resultados dos estudos comparativos de crescimento mostraram similaridade entre os biótipos de azevém resistente e suscetível ao iodosulfuron, o que não caracterizou efeito pleiotrópico decorrente da resistência. Quanto à habilidade competitiva, a competição interespecífica é prejudicial para o biótipo resistente, enquanto, para o biótipo suscetível, independe o competidor. A cultura do trigo mostra habilidade competitiva superior a dos biótipos de azevém resistente e suscetível.

RESUMO A buva (Conyza sumatrensis), uma das principais plantas daninhas já identificadas no sul do Brasil, vem apresentando controle insatisfatório, em resposta à aplicação dos herbicidas chlorimuron-ethyl e glyphosate. Por esta razão, o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar herbicidas alternativos, visando ao controle de biótipos de C. sumatrensis, com resistência de nível baixo ao herbicida chlorimuron-ethyl e resistentes ao herbicida glyphosate. O experimento foi realizado em casa de vegetação, entre abril e agosto de 2012, no município de Passo Fundo, RS. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições, sendo avaliados 15 tratamentos com herbicidas, além de uma testemunha sem aplicação. As variáveis consideradas foram controle percentual, aos 14, 21 e 28 dias após a aplicação dos tratamentos (DAT) e a matéria seca da parte aérea, aos 28 DAT. Como resultados, observou-se que os biótipos foram 100% controlados, aos 28 DAT, pelos tratamentos alternativos de paraquat + diuron; ammonium glufosinate; glyphosate + 2,4-D; glyphosate + ammonium glufosinate; 2,4-D; tembotrione e tembotrione + atrazine. O biótipo 17 evidenciou menor sensibilidade aos herbicidas inibidores da ALS e os biótipos 05, 17 e 20 não foram controlados pelo herbicida glyphosate.

Synergic effects of glyphosate and saflufenacil have been reported to control Conyza spp. However, the mechanism of this synergic combination is unknown. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of the combination of glyphosate and saflufenacil on the control and resistance status of glyphosate-resistant (GR) C. bonariensis, as well as on oxidative stress and lipidic peroxidation. Glyphosate-resistant and glyphosate-sensitive (GS) biotypes were treated with different rates of saflufenacil, glyphosate, and glyphosate combined with saflufenacil. The combination of glyphosate (1480 g ae ha−1) and saflufenacil (≥15 g ha−1) presented the best control of GR plants compared with their individual effects. It also reduced the resistance factor from 19.6 to 4.6 (4.3-fold) and represents a good alternative for resistance management. The combination of glyphosate and saflufenacil resulted in higher oxidative stress and lipidic peroxidation compared with the effects of either herbicide alone. The oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation promoted by the combination of the herbicides occurred earlier after treatment and remained at higher levels over a longer period (12–192 h) compared with their individual results. The combined oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation at high levels over a long time is likely to be one reason that the combination of glyphosate and saflufenacil effectively controls GR C. bonariensis.

Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum; LOLMU) is one of the most troublesome weeds in temperate regions in the world. This weed species interfere with wheat, corn, rye, and oat, causing significant crop yield losses. This species has evolved glyphosate resistance, making it difficult to control. The mechanisms of glyphosate resistance are still unknown, and an understanding thereof will favor the development of new strategies of management. The present study is the first transcriptome study in LOLMU using glyphosate-resistant and -sensitive biotypes, aiming to identify and to provide a list of the candidate target genes related to glyphosate resistance mechanism. The transcriptome was assembled de novo, producing 87,433 contigs with an N50 of 740 bp and an average length of 575 bp. There were 92 and 54 up- and down-regulated genes, respectively, in the resistant biotype, while a total of 1683 were differentially expressed in the sensitive biotype in response to glyphosate treatment. We selected 14 highly induced genes and seven with repressed expression in the resistant biotype in response to glyphosate. Of these genes, a significant proportion were related to the plasma membrane, indicating that there is a barrier making it difficult for glyphosate to enter the cell.

The successive use of Roundup Ready crops may difficult the management of volunteer plants originated from seed losses during harvest. In soybean, volunteer corn plants can exhibit higher interference and cause reduce yield depending on their density. The aim of this study was to quantify the economic threshold level (ETL) in soybean as a function of the competition of volunteer corn and to evaluate the chemical control in different phenological stages of development. The ETL and chemical control experiments were conducted in the field, under completely randomized and randomized block designs with one and three replicates, respectively. The variables analyzed were yield and ETL as functions of the competition of different volunteer corn populations (control, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 24 and 32 plants m-2) and the chemical control with acetyl coenzyme-A carboxylase (ACCase) inhibitor herbicides alone or mixed with glyphosate in different phenological stages of development (V2-V3, V4-V5 and V6-V8) that were evaluated at seven, 14 and 21 days after application (DAA). The results showed higher competitive potential of volunteer corn in which the presence of one plant m-2 reduces the soybean yield in 17%. The ETL ranged from 0.14 to 0.78 plants m-2 and the control of volunteer corn must be carried out in low populations. The use of ACCase inhibitors herbicides alone or mixed with glyphosate demonstrated greater than 85% control in the V2-V3 phenological stage independent of the period evaluated. The effectiveness of all herbicides decreased with application delay with a control level above 87%, in the V6-V8 phenological stage, obtained only for fluazifop and haloxyfop herbicides alone or in mixed with glyphosate at 14 and 21 days after application.

ABSTRACT: In Brazil, horseweed is one of the most important weeds because of the resistance to herbicides and high competitive for the crops. A large of losses were reported in major crops such as soybeans, wheat and corn, where the use a no-tillage system and the herbicide resistance promote better establishment. A correct understanding of the way temperature influences germination enables the prediction of the regions with the highest potential for colonization by this weed and thus facilitates its control. The objective of this study; therefore, was to discern the ways temperature affected the germination, viability and longevity of horseweed seeds. Testing was done at 10, 20 and 30°C, while evaluation occurred on days 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60. Seeds were packed in a nylon mesh bag (5x5cm), with 10g of upland soil (Yellow Red Argissolo, sandy loam texture), placed in transparent plastic boxes at 0 to 0.5cm soil depth, at the temperatures specified. Percentage of remaining seeds, first and second germination counts, abnormal seedlings, and dead, dormant, viable and non-viable seeds, were assessed. Horseweed seeds achieve secondary dormancy at 10, 20 and 30°C, while their quality and the longevity showed damage at 20 and 30°C temperatures.

ABSTRACT: The interference of glyphosate resistant hairy fleabane (Conyza bonariensis) has caused yield losses in soybean crop. Knowledge of the economic threshold is an important aspect for the economic management of resistant weeds. Because of it, the interference of the glyphosate resistant hairy fleabane density on the soybean yield loss was evaluated, as well as to estimate the economic threshold. Two experiments were conducted to verify the effect of different weed densities on the yield of two soybean cultivars (BRS Estância and BMX Turbo). Weed density ranged from 0 to 124 plants m-2. The yield of the BRS Estância decreased by 1.4% to the increase of one single plant, while for the BMX Turbo the loss was 25.9%. Soybean yield and economic threshold were lower for the BMX Turbo cultivar compared to the cultivar BRS Estância, which can be attributed to the genotype, competitive ability, weed development stage and/or environment. Increases in crop yield expectation, soybean price and herbicide efficiency reduce the economic threshold, indicating that the adoption of control measures should be taken when the weed density is low. Due to the high cost of hairy fleabane control, it is only feasible at high densities.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the relative competitive ability of soybean with different development stages of hairy fleabane. Two experiments were conducted in greenhouse, in a completely randomized design. In the experiment it was tested soybean and hairy fleabane competition at different stage of development (rosette and 15 cm height) at the proportions 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 and 0:100, and total plant population was 315 plant m-2. The variables evaluated were plant height, leaf area, and shoot dry matter (leaves and stems). Competitive analysis was performed by diagrams and interpreting the competitiveness index. The soybean has greater competitive ability that horseweed for both development stages. The intraspecific competition is more intense for soybean when in hairy fleabane rosette stage, and the competitive relations are equivalent between soybean and hairy fleabane of 15 cm tall. The both hairy fleabane stages were injured in the soybeans competition.

Acetolactate synthase inhibitors are the main group of herbicides used in winter crops in Southern Brazil where their intensive use has selected for herbicide-resistant biotypes of radish. The resistance affects the efficacy of herbicides, and identifying the resistance mechanism involved is important for defining management strategies. The aim of this study was to elucidate the resistance mechanism of radish biotypes by quantifying the enzyme activity, ALS gene sequencing and evaluating the response of biotypes to iodosulfuron and imazethapyr herbicide application after treatment with a cytochrome P450 monooxygenase inhibitor. The susceptible (B1) and resistant (B4 and B13) biotypes were from wheat fields in the Northwest of Rio Grande do Sul State. The results demonstrated that the enzyme affinity for the substrate (KM) was not affected in biotypes B4 and B13 but that the Vmax of the resistant biotypes was higher than that of biotype B1. The resistant biotypes showed no differential metabolic response to iodosulfuron and imazethapyr herbicides when inhibited by malathion and piperonyl butoxide. However, gene sequencing of ALS showed a mutation at position 574, with an amino acid substitution of tryptophan for leucine (Trp-574-Leu) in resistant biotypes.

The objective of this work was to identify herbicides used in the sugarcane crop that affects neither the growth, the development, of nor the process of biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) by the diazotrophic bacterium Herbaspirillum seropedicae. Eighteen herbicides (paraquat, ametryne, tebuthiuron, amicarbazone, diuron, metribuzin, [hexazinone + diuron], [hexazinone + clomazone], clomazone, isoxaflutole, sulfentrazone, oxyfluorfen, imazapic, imazapyr, [trifloxysulfuron sodium + ametryne], glyphosate, MSMA e 2,4-D) were tested in their respective commercial doses regarding their impact on the growth of the bacteria in liquid medium DIGs. For this, we determined the duration of lag phase, generation time and maximum cell density of H. seropedicae, calculated from optical density data obtained at regular intervals during the incubation of cultures for 33 h at 32oC. We also evaluated the impact of herbicides on nitrogenase activity of H. seropedicae grown in semi-solid N-free JNFb medium. The effects of herbicides on the growth variables and the ARA were compared with the untreated control by Dunnett test. A completely randomized design was used. The herbicides paraquat, imazapyr, ametryne, glyphosate and oxyfluorfen inhibited the growth of H. seropedicae in vitro. Ametryne, oxyfluorfen and glyphosate caused a small reduction in the duration of the lag phase of diazotrophic bacteria H. seropedicae. Oxyfluorfen, ametryne and imazapyr resulted in increased the generation time by H. seropedicae. Glyphosate promoted drastic reduction in biological nitrogen fixation in vitro by H. seropedicae. The other tested herbicides did not affect the growth or the same BNF by H. seropedicae.

Conyza bonariensis (hairy fleabane) is one of the most problematic and widespread glyphosate-resistant weeds in the world. This highly competitive weed species significantly interferes with crop growth and substantially decreases crop yield. Despite its agricultural importance, the molecular mechanisms of glyphosate resistance are still unknown. The present RNA-Seq study was performed with the goal of identifying differentially expressed candidate transcripts (genes) related to metabolism-based non-target site glyphosate resistance in C. bonariensis. The whole-transcriptome was de novo assembled from glyphosate-resistant and -sensitive biotypes of C. bonariensis from Southern Brazil. The RNA was extracted from untreated and glyphosate-treated plants at several timepoints up to 288 h after treatment in both biotypes. The transcriptome assembly produced 90,124 contigs with an average length of 777 bp and N50 of 1118 bp. In response to glyphosate treatment, differential gene expression analysis was performed on glyphosate-resistant and -sensitive biotypes. A total of 9622 genes were differentially expressed as a response to glyphosate treatment in both biotypes, 4297 (44.6%) being up- and 5325 (55.4%) down-regulated. The resistant biotype presented 1770 up- and 2333 down-regulated genes while the sensitive biotype had 2335 and 2800 up- and down-regulated genes, respectively. Among them, 974 up- and 1290 down-regulated genes were co-expressed in both biotypes. In the present work, we identified 41 new candidate target genes from five families related to herbicide transport and metabolism: 19 ABC transporters, 10 CYP450s, one glutathione S-transferase (GST), five glycosyltransferases (GT), and six genes related to antioxidant enzyme catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD), and superoxide dismutase (SOD). The candidate genes may participate in metabolic-based glyphosate resistance via oxidation, conjugation, transport, and degradation, plus antioxidation. One or more of these genes might ‘rescue’ resistant plants from irreversible damage after glyphosate treatment. The 41 target genes we report in the present study may inform further functional genomics studies, including gene editing approaches to elucidate glyphosate-resistance mechanisms in C. bonariensis.

The antioxidant defense system acts to maintain the equilibrium between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the elimination of toxic levels of ROS in plants. Overproduction and accumulation of ROS results in metabolic disorders and can lead to the oxidative destruction of the cell. Several stress factors cause ROS overproduction and trigger oxidative stress in crops and weeds. Recently, the involvement of the antioxidant system in weed interference and herbicide treatment in crops and weeds has been the subject of investigation. In this review, we address ROS production and plant mechanisms of defense, alterations in the antioxidant system at transcriptional and enzymatic levels in crops induced by weed interference, and herbicide exposure in crops and weeds. We also describe the mechanisms of action in herbicides that lead to ROS generation in target plants. Lastly, we discuss the relations between antioxidant systems and weed biology and evolution, as well as the interactive effects of herbicide treatment on these factors.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar a habilidade competitiva relativa de milhã com as culturas de arroz irrigado e de soja. Realizaram-se cinco experimentos, nas safras de 2009/2010 e 2010/2011, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos consistiram de proporções de plantas de milhã e arroz irrigado ou soja (100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75 e 0:100%). A área foliar e a massa de matéria seca da parte aérea foram avaliadas aos 45 dias após a emergência. A competição entre milhã e arroz irrigado ou soja ocorre pelos mesmos recursos do ambiente. Plantas de milhã apresentam menor habilidade competitiva por indivíduo do que o arroz irrigado e a soja, quando ocorrem na mesma proporção de plantas. Quando as culturas do arroz irrigado ou da soja estão associadas ao milhã, a competição intraespecífica predomina, enquanto, para a planta daninha, prevalece a competição interespecífica como a mais prejudicial.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a resistência de capim pé-de-galinha (Eleusine indica) ao glifosato, em lavouras de soja transgênica; avaliar o efeito de aplicações de glifosato em diferentes estádios de desenvolvimento; identificar práticas agronômicas associadas à seleção de biótipos resistentes; e avaliar a eficiência dos herbicidas cletodim, fluazifope-P-butílico, clomazona, glufosinato de amônio e glifosato nas plantas resistentes. Plantas escapes ao tratamento com glifosato foram coletadas em 24 propriedades, no Rio Grande do Sul. As plantas foram cultivadas em casa de vegetação, tendo-se avaliado a sua resistência ao glifosato. Os acessos resistentes foram selecionados e avaliados quanto ao efeito da aplicação do glifosato em diferentes estádios de crescimento e quanto à sensibilidade aos herbicidas. Foi aplicado um questionário aos produtores para identificação das práticas agronômicas associadas às falhas no controle. O controle de E. indica pelo glifosato é mais efetivo com a aplicação em estádios iniciais de desenvolvimento. Práticas agronômicas, como uso contínuo de baixas doses do herbicida, aplicação em estádios de desenvolvimento avançados das plantas daninhas (mais de um afilho) e a ausência de rotação de culturas foram relacionadas às falhas de controle observadas. Os herbicidas cletodim, fluazifope-P-butílico e glufosinato de amônio são alternativas eficientes para o controle de E. indica.The objective of this work was to evaluate the resistance of goose grass (Eleusine indica) to glyphosate application in transgenic soybean crops; evaluate the effect of glyphosate applications in different growth stages; identify the main agronomic practices associated with the selection of resistant biotypes; and evaluate the effect of the herbicides clethodim, fluazifop-p-butyl, clomazone, glufosinate ammonium, and glyphosate on resistant plants. Plants that survived glyphosate application were collected on 24 properties in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Plants were grown in greenhouse and their resistance to glyphosate was evaluated. The resistant accessions were selected and evaluated as to the effect of glyphosate application on different growth stages and to their sensitivity to the herbicides. A questionnaire was given to producers in order to identify agronomic practices associated with control failures. The control of E. indica by glyphosate is more effective at initial growth stages. Agronomic practices, such as continued use of low doses of glyphosate, application on advanced weed growth stages (more than one tiller), and absence of crop rotation were related to the observed control failures. The herbicides clethodim, fluazifop-p-butyl, and glufosinate ammonium are efficient alternatives to control E. indica.

Objetivou-se avaliar o desempenho de cereais de inverno sobre resíduos de forrageiras perenes e culturas de verão. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, os tratamentos de inverno, trigo de duplo propósito cv. 'BRS Tarumã' e aveia preta Agro Zebu, foram distribuídos nas faixas. O outro fator consistiu de diferentes resíduos de culturas de verão (milho e soja), cultivadas em consórcio com forrageiras perenes (Urochloa e Panicum) e o milheto como testemunha. Houve interação entre as espécies de inverno e os resíduos de verão para as variáveis fibra em detergente ácido (FDA), fibra em detergente neutro (FDN) e digestibilidade da matéria seca (DMS), no primeiro pastejo. O acúmulo de massa seca (MS) variou apenas no primeiro pastejo, sendo maior nos cereais cultivados na resteva de soja. Em média, trigo 'BRS Tarumã' acumulou 2.360kg MS ha-1, superior à aveia preta com 1.984kg MS ha-1. A proteína bruta (PB) no primeiro pastejo foi maior para os cereais cultivados nos resíduos culturais da soja e menor quando cultivados nos resíduos de braquiária Marandu. O rendimento de grãos e a massa de mil grãos (MMG) não foram afetadas pelos resíduos de verão, sendo inferiores para a aveia preta.Aimed to estimate dual purpose cereals on the summer crop-perennial grass pasture residue. The experimental design was randomized complete block, the winter treatments were late dual purpose wheat cv. 'BRS Tarumã' and black oat pasture cv. 'Agro Zebu' allocated on strips over summer crop residues (maize and soybean) and perennial grass pastures (Urochloa and Panicum) and pearl millet as check treatment. There was summer crop residue and winter treatment interaction to neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and and dry matter digestibility (DMD) only the first grazing. Forage dry matter (DM) accumulation was higher on soybean residue on the first grazing cycle. 'BRS Tarumã' yielded 2.360kg DM ha-1, that was superior to black oat pasture (1.984kg MS ha-1). Crude protein concentration was higher on first grazing period forage on winter pasture grown on soybean residues and the opposite happed on Marandu pasture. Winter crop yield and grain mass were not affected due to summer residues, but black oat yielded less than wheat.

Alternativas econômicas para compor sistemas de produção são indispensáveis para a sustentabilidade de sistemas agrícolas, pecuários ou sistemas integrados. Objetivou-se avaliar a viabilidade técnica do consórcio das culturas produtoras de grãos, soja e milho, com Urochloa brizantha e Panicum maximum no Norte do Rio Grande do Sul. As forrageiras foram semeadas simultaneamente às culturas produtoras de grãos, na entrelinha, e isoladas. Foram utilizadas as cultivares 'Marandu' (braquiária), 'Mombaça' e 'Aruana' (panicum) e como testemunha o milheto (Pennisetum americanum). Foram avaliados rendimento de grãos das culturas, seus componentes e o acúmulo de massa seca (MS). O acúmulo de MS das forrageiras isoladas Mombaça e Aruana foi superior às demais, com acúmulo médio de 6.515 e 5.778kg ha-1, respectivamente. No consórcio com o milho, o acúmulo médio de MS das forrageiras foi 2.380kg ha-1, sem diferença significativa entre as espécies, mas, com soja, o maior acúmulo ocorreu para Marandu (3.040kg ha-1). Não houve diminuição no rendimento de grãos da soja e do milho com a presença das forrageiras, porém, para colheita mecânica da soja, serão necessários estudos adicionais. O consórcio de milho com as gramíneas forrageiras tropicais perenes é alternativa viável para o Norte do RS.Economic alternatives to compose production systems are essential to the sustainability of farming systems, livestock or integrated systems. The objective was to evaluate the viability of intercropping grain crops, soybean and maize, with Urochloa brizantha and Panicum maximum in northern of Rio Grande do Sul. The forages were sown simultaneously with grain crops, in the inter-line, and in monoculture. We used 'Marandu' (brachiaria), 'Mombaça' and 'Aruana' (panicum) and millet (Pennisetum americanum) as a control. Crop yield and their components and accumulation of dry matter (DM) were evaluated. The DM accumulation of 'Aruana' and 'Mombaça' single pasture was higher than the others, with average accumulation of 6.515 and 5.778kg ha-1, respectively. Intercropped with maize the average accumulation of dry matter was 2.380kg ha-1, without significant differences between species, but with the greatest accumulation occurred in soybeans for 'Marandu' (3.040kg ha-1). There was no decrease in soybean and maize yield in presence of forages, but for mechanical harvesting of soybean further investigation will be required. The intercropping between maize and tropical perennial forages is a viable alternative to the northern of RS.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a produtividade e os componentes de produção de trigo cultivado para grãos e duplo propósito em sistemas de integração lavoura-pecuária (ILP), em plantio direto. A produtividade de grãos dos dois tipos de trigo e os componentes de produção do trigo para produção de grãos foram avaliados nos anos agrícolas de 2003 a 2008, em um Latossolo Vermelho distrófico típico, em Coxilha, RS, nos sistemas de rotação: 1, trigo/soja e ervilhaca/milho; 2, trigo/soja e pastagem de aveia-preta/milho; 3, trigo/soja e pastagem de aveia-preta/soja; 4, trigo/soja e ervilha/milho; 5, trigo/soja, triticale de duplo propósito/soja e ervilhaca/soja; e 6, trigo/soja, aveia-branca de duplo propósito/soja e trigo de duplo propósito/soja. Utilizou-se o delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições. Não houve diferença entre as médias dos componentes de produção (número de espigas, número de grãos por espiga e massa de grãos) do trigo para produção de grãos, nos diferentes sistemas ILP. Os sistemas 2, 3, 4 e 5 proporcionaram maior produtividade do trigo para grãos em comparação ao 6. Não há diferença significativa na produtividade de grãos, na massa hectolítrica e na massa de mil grãos, entre os trigos cultivados para produção de grãos e para duplo propósito.

Cyperus difformis L. is a weed occurrence in flooded rice, that it has been presenting control difficulty due to ALS inhibiting herbicides resistance. The objectives of this work was to determine necessary rate 50% control of the population (C50) and reduce 50% of the production the aerial dry mass (GR50) in resistant and susceptible biotypes of C. difformis and evaluate the control of these biotypes with alternative herbicides recommended for that species. For that, two experiments were performed at green house of FAEM/UFPel arranged in a completely randomized design, with four replicates. The experiment I were consisted of resistant (CYPDI 9) and susceptible of C. difformis biotype and rate of the pyrazosulfuron-ethyl herbicide, corresponding to 0, 0,5, 1, 1,5, 2, 2,5, 3, 4, 6, 8, 16, 32 and 64 times de registered rate (20g ha-1). The evaluated variables were visual control and aerial dry mass (MPAS) to the 28 days after the application of the treatments (DAT). In the experiment II the treatments were consisted of the same biotype (CYPDI 9 and CYPDI 8), nine herbicides azimsulfuron (6g ha-1); bentazon (900g ha-1); bispyribac-sodium (48g ha-1); carfentrazone-ethyl (40g ha-1); ethoxysulfuron (72g ha-1); glyphosate (900g ha-1); penoxsulam (36g ha-1); propanil (3600g ha-1) and pyrazosulfuron-ethyl (20g ha-1) and checks that didn't applied herbicide. The evaluated variables were: visual control for the herbicides to the 14, 21 and 28 DAT, foliate area and MPAS to 28 DAT. Before the results, it can be concluded that the resistance of the C. difformis biotype to pyrazosulfuron-ethyl is elevated and it makes unfeasible her control for the herbicide and the herbicides carfentrazone-ethyl, bentazon e propanil holders of alternative action mechanisms to the pyrazosulfuron-ethyl, control the resistant biotype of C. difformis.Cyperus difformis L. é planta daninha ocorrente em lavouras de arroz irrigado, que tem apresentado dificuldade de controle devido à resistência a herbicidas inibidores de ALS. A resistência do biótipo de C. difformis ao pyrazosulfuron-ethyl é elevada e inviabiliza seu controle pelo herbicida e, os herbicidas carfentrazone-ethyl, bentazon e propanil, detentores de mecanismos de ação alternativos ao pyrazosulfuron-ethyl, controlam o biótipo resistente de C. difformis.

Cyperus difformis L. é uma planta daninha ocorrente em lavouras de arroz irrigado, que tem apresentado dificuldade de controle devido à resistência a herbicidas inibidores da enzima ALS. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram investigar características cinéticas da enzima ALS de biótipos de C. difformis e determinar as bases bioquímicas da resistência da espécie ao herbicida pyrazosulfuron-ethyl. Para isso, foram conduzidos experimentos em laboratório do BIOAGRO/UFV. O método utilizado baseou-se na metologia utilizada por CAREY et al. (1997) e adaptada por VARGAS et al. (1999), com algumas modificações. Foram avaliadas a concentração de substrato (piruvato) que fornece velocidade inicial igual à metade da velocidade máxima de reação (K M) e velocidade máxima de reação (Vmáx), bem como a atividade da enzima ALS na presença do inibidor (pyrazosulfuron-ethyl). Diante dos resultados, pode-se observar que a resistência de C. difformis a pyrazosulfuron-ethyl é decorrente da insensibilidade da enzima ALS ao herbicida, não acarretando, porém, prejuízo aos parâmetros cinéticos K M e Vmáx da enzima ALS.Cyperus difformis L. is a weed that occurs in flooded rice, which has presented difficulty in controlling due to the resistance to ALS inhibiting herbicides. The objectives of this research were to investigate kinetic characteristics of ALS enzyme from C. difformis biotypes and to determine the biochemical bases of resistance from the species to pyrazosulfuron-ethyl herbicide. For that, experiments were conducted at the BIOAGRO/UFV laboratory. The method used was based on the methodology used by CAREY et al. (1997) and adapted by VARGAS et al. (1999), with some modifications. It was evaluated substratum concentration (pyruvate) that provides initial velocity equal to half the speed reaction (K M) and maximum velocity of reaction (Vmáx), as well the activity of the ALS enzyme in the presence of the inhibitor (pyrazosulfuron-ethyl). According to the results, it is possible to observe that C. difformis resistance to pyrazosulfuron-ethyl is due to the insensibility of the ALS enzyme to the herbicide, however without penalty to K M and Vmáx kinetic parameters of the ALS enzyme.

A aveia preta é a cultura de cobertura de inverno importante no sul do Brasil. Entretanto, a aveia preta, do mesmo modo que o azevém anual, é uma planta daninha em culturas comerciais de inverno. Dois experimentos em blocos casualizados foram conduzidos na Embrapa Trigo, em Passo Fundo, Rio Grande do Sul (RS), para estudar métodos de manejo de aveia preta em dois estádios de desenvolvimento, antese e grão leitoso, que evitem a transformação dessa espécie em planta daninha, em trigo cultivado em sucessão com soja. As parcelas tiveram área útil de 60m². Nove métodos de manejo foram estudados: dessecação; rolagem e dessecação; fenação; ensilagem; roçada; trituração; rolagem, mediante uma operação com rolo faca; gradagem; colheita mecânica de grãos. A biomassa média acumulada na antese foi de 5.016kg MS ha-1 e em grão leitoso, de 6.050kg MS ha-1. Durante o verão, a soja não foi afetada pelos métodos de manejo de aveia e teve produtividade média de 2.080kg ha-1. Na safra de inverno do ano seguinte, os métodos de manejo aplicados na antese tiveram produtividade média de grãos de trigo de 2.472kg ha-1, e a densidade de espigas foi de 355 espigas m-2, nas parcelas que foram dessecadas antes da semeadura da cultura de trigo, e 836kg ha-1 e 225 espigas m-2, nas parcelas sem dessecação. Nos manejos aplicados no estádio de grão leitoso, a produtividade média foi de 1.733kg ha-1, com densidade de espigas de 334 espigas m-2. Nas parcelas sem dessecação, a cultura de trigo foi totalmente dominada pelas plantas espontâneas de aveia, resultantes dos métodos de manejo aplicados no inverno anterior. Métodos de manejo da aveia exclusivamente mecânicos, em qualquer estádio de desenvolvimento da cultura, pode transformar essa espécie em planta daninha, nos cultivos de inverno subsequentes. Esse problema é evitado com dessecação até a antese, pois, depois desse estádio, nenhum método de manejo testado foi capaz de evitar a maturação fisiológica de sementes de aveia, tornando essa espécie uma planta daninha potencial para as safras de inverno subsequentes e obrigando a dessecação das plantas emergidas antes da semeadura de culturas comerciais.Black oat is an important winter cover crop in south Brazilian. However, it is a weed problem in cool season grain crops as well as ryegrass. Two trials in a randomized complete block design were conducted at Embrapa Trigo in Passo Fundo, Rio Grande do Sul state. This research aimed to study different oat management methods applied on black oat at anthesis and milk stage to avoid it becoming a weed plant in wheat cropped after soybean. The plot area was 60m². Nine treatments were tested, in both trials: spray herbicide; roll plus herbicide; hay harvest; silage harvest; mowing; grinding, silage; rolling; disking; and grain harvesting. The average total biomass at anthesis was 5,016kg DM ha-1 and at milk stage was 6,050kg DM ha-1. Soybean cropped in the summer season yield 2,080kg ha-1 and it was not affected by black oat treatments. During the second year, the wheat plots sprayed herbicide before planting yielded 2,472kg ha-1 and spike density of 355m-2, however plots without herbicide yielded 836kg ha-1 and had 225 spikes m-2. On black oat milk stage managements the yield average was 1,733kg ha-1 and 334 spikes m-2, on sprayed herbicide plots before planting. In opposite, the plots without herbicide, wheat plants were completely dominated by resurgent black oat plants, due to managements applied during previous winter. Mechanical management methods applied only in black oat development stages allowed seeds germination during winter crops cycle. This problem is avoided spraying herbicide before oat anthesis, because after that any management method tested was unsuccessful to control oat after the following winter crops, so is necessary to spray herbicide before seeding winter cash crops.

O uso de coberturas é uma estratégia de manejo do solo que pode influenciar no desenvolvimento de plantas de espécies frutíferas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o crescimento da macieira, na fase de implantação de um pomar, em resposta ao uso de diferentes materiais e plantas de cobertura de solo. O pomar foi implantado em 2003, em Vacaria-RS, com a cv. Galaxy, sendo conduzido no sistema de produção orgânico. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos ao acaso, com três repetições, envolvendo os seguintes tratamentos nas linhas de plantio: testemunha (sem manejo da cobertura do solo), capina, plástico preto, sombrite, serragem de pínus, acícula de pínus, palha de capim-rabo-de-burro, azevém, aveia-preta, aveia-preta + ervilhaca, aveia-preta + nabo-forrageiro, azevém + trevo-branco + espécies espontâneas e roçada. A cobertura do solo por plantas espontâneas foi avaliada mensalmente no período de primavera-verão, durante dois anos, sendo relacionada com o desenvolvimento da macieira. Os tratamentos capina, plástico preto, acícula de pínus e palha de capim-rabo-de-burro mantiveram a cobertura do solo por plantas espontâneas inferior a 20 %. A altura e o diâmetro das plantas de macieira diminuíram à medida que aumentou a cobertura do solo por plantas espontâneas, evidenciando competição entre ambas.Soil cover is one of the options for weed management in the orchard but this might affect fruit trees development. The objective of this work was to evaluate apple trees growth during the orchard establishment stage by using different materials and soil cover plants. The experimental apple orchard was planted in 2003, in Vacaria, RS, Southern of Brazil, with the cv. Galaxy managed under organic system. The experiment followed the randomized block design, with three replications. The treatments were applied in the tree rows, as follows: control (without weed management), manual weeding, black plastic film, black net, pinus sawdust, pinus needle mulch, Andropogon sp mulch, annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum), black oat (Avena strigosa), black oat + common vetch (Vicia sativa), black oat + fodder radish (Raphanus sativus), annual ryegrass + white clover (Trifolium repens) + spontaneous plant cover, weed mowing. The soil covered by weeds was monthly measured, during the spring/summer season, over the second and third years of the orchard establishment, and this was related to the apple trees growth. The treatments with manual weeding, black plastic film, pinus needle and Andropogon mulch maintained the soil cover by weeds below 20 %. The apple tree height and diameter decreased with the increase of soil cover by weeds, reflecting weeds competition with apple trees.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi investigar o grau de tolerância de cultivares de trigo e aveia aos herbicidas diclofop-methyl, fenoxaprop-ethyl e haloxyfop-methyl, visando a utilização seletiva desses produtos para controlar espécies gramíneas infestantes dessas culturas. Foi instalado um experimento de campo e outro de casa-de-vegetação. Os tratamentos testados no experimento de campo foram diclofop-methyl (540 g/ha), fenoxaprop-ethyl (180 g/ha), haloxyfop-methyl (120 g/ha) e uma testemunha sem tratamento herbicida, aplicados sobre as cultivares 'CTC-1', 'UFRGS-7' e 'UPF-16' de aveia branca, e em aveia-preta. No experimento de casa-de-vegetação testaram-se três doses de fenoxaprop-ethyl (0, 90 e 120 g/ha), aplicadas sobre sete cultivares de trigo ('BR-23', 'BR-35', 'BR-38', 'E-16', 'E-40', 'E-49' e 'E-52'), aveia-branca, aveia-preta e azevém. Como resultados do ensaio de campo, constatou-se que todos os herbicidas testados controlaram com eficiência (acima de 90%) as cultivares de aveia-branca. A aveia-preta mostrou alta sensibilidade ao fenoxaprop-ethyl e ao haloxyfop-methyl e alguma tolerância ao diclofop-methyl; já o trigo mostrou-se tolerante ao diclofop-methyl e ao fenoxaprop-ethyl. Em casa-de-vegetação, as cultivares de trigo 'BR-38', 'E-16', 'E-49' e 'E-52' apresentaram níveis aceitáveis de fitotoxicidade para fenoxaprop-ethyl a 90 g/ha, enquanto as demais cultivares ('BR-23', 'BR-35' e 'E-40') apresentaram danos moderados ao herbicida. Já fenoxaprop-ethyl a 120 g/ha causou aumento no nível de fitotoxicidade para as cultivares de trigo, exceto para 'E-16' e 'E-52'. O azevém mostrou-se tolerante ao herbicida fenoxaprop-ethyl. Conclui-se que existe potencial de uso do herbicida fenoxaprop-ethyl em lavouras de trigo para controlar seletivamente aveia-branca e aveia-preta. O herbicida diclofop-methyl apresenta controle elevado de aveia-branca e reduzido de aveia-preta. Haloxyfop-methyl não evidenciou seletividade ao trigo, controlando com eficiência as gramíneas testadas.The objective of this study was to investigate the tolerance levels of wheat and oat cultivars to the herbicide diclofop-methyl, fenoxaprop-ethyl and haloxyfop-methyl, aiming the selective use of these chemicals to control grass species that may infest these crops. Two experiments have been performed, one at field condition and another in the greenhouse. Treatments tested in the field were diclofop-methyl at 540 g/ha, fenoxaprop-ethyl at 180 g/ha, haloxyfop-methyl at 120 g/ha, plus a check without herbicide treatment, applied on Avena sativa cultivars 'CTC-1', 'UFRGS-7' and 'UPF-16', and on Avena strigosa. In the greenhouse experiment, three rates of fenoxaprop-ethyl (0, 90 and 120 g/ha) have been tested, applied on seven wheat cultivars ('BR-23', 'BR-35', 'BR-38', 'E-16', 'E-40', 'E-49' and 'E-52'), on aots, Avena strigosa and ryegrass. As results of field trial, it was detected that all herbicides tested controlled efficiently (over 90%) oat cultivars. Avena strigosa showed high sensitivity to fenoxaprop-ethyl and haloxyfop-methyl, and some tolerance to diclofop-methyl, whereas wheat showed tolerance to diclofop-methyl and fenoxaprop-ethyl. In the greenhouse, wheat cultivars 'BR-38', 'E-16', 'E-49' and 'E-52' presented cceptable levels of injury to fenoxaprop-ethyl at 90 g/ha, while the other cultivars ('BR-23', 'BR-35' and 'E-52') presented moderate injury to the herbicide. On the other hand, fenoxaprop-methyl at 120 g/ha caused increased injury levels to all wheat cultivars, except 'E-16' and 'E-52'. Ryegrass showed tolerance to fenoxaprop-ethyl . It was concluded that it is possible to use fenoxaprop-ethyl herbicide in wheat fields for selective controle of oats and A. strigosa. Diclofop-methyl presents high levels of oats control, but reduced control of A. strigosa. Haloxyfop-methyl did not prove selective for wheat, controlling with efficiency the grasses tested.

O controle de plantas daninhas do tipo gramíneas constitui-se em grande problema nos sistemas de cultivo mínimo, requerendo aplicações eficientes de herbicidas. Nesse sentido, parâmetros de tecnologia de aplicação como volume de calda, tamanho de gota e concentração herbicida exercem grande influência sobre a atividade desses produtos. O objetivo desse trabalho foi investigar os efeitos das interações da dose herbicida, sua concentração na solução e o volume do veículo diluente, sobre a eficiência do herbicida sulfosate, usando-se arroz como espécie reagente. O experimento foi conduzido durante a safra agrícola de 1994/95 na Estação Experimental do Arroz do IRGA, em Cachoeirinha, RS. Foram testados 18 tratamentos, constituídos por cinco doses de sulfosate (1,7; 2,3; 3,0; 4,0 e 4,7 l/ha de produto formulado); cinco volumes de diluente (85; 115; 150; 200 e 235 l/ha) e cinco concentrações de produto na calda (1,2; 1,5; 2,0; 2,6 e 3,3% v/v). Em cada condição um desses parâmetros era fixado e os outros dois variavam. Ao se manter constante o volume de calda, não houve diferenças, na última avaliação, entre as doses 3,0; 4,0 e 4,7 l/ha de sulfosate, quando todas alcançaram nível ao redor de 90% de controle do arroz. Já quando se manteve constante a concentração herbicida, as respostas às doses foram não significativas. Apenas na última avaliação observou-se desempenho inferior da menor dose. Na terceira condição, quando se manteve constante a dose herbicida, observou-se que o sulfosate foi mais atuante quando aplicado nas maiores concentrações. Foram alcançados níveis de controle ao redor de 90% com doses de sulfosate de 3 l/ha ou superiores, ou com concentrações herbicidas de 2% ou maiores. Isso demonstra que parâmetros de tecnologia de aplicação de sulfosate podem ser alterados no sentido de se obter maior eficiência na sua ação.Control of weed grass species constitutes a great problem in reduced tillage systems, requiring efficient herbicide application. In this sense, application parameters like spray volume, dropplet size, and herbicide concentration may exert great influence on activity of these products. The objective of this research was to investigate the interaction effects of herbicide rate,herbicide concentration, and diluent volume, on sulfosate efficiency, using rice as test plant. The experiment was conducted during the 1994/95 growing season at the IRGA Rice Experimental Station, in Cachoeirinha, RS, Brazil. Eighteen treatments were tested, performed by five sulfosate rates (1.7; 2.3; 3.0; 4.0; and 4.7 l/ha of formulated product), five diluent volumes (85; 115; 150; 200; and 235 l/ha), and five product concentrations in spray solution (1.2; 1.5; 2.0; 2.6; and 3.3 % v/v). In each condition, one of these parameters was fixed, whereas the other two varied. When maintained spray volume constant, there was no difference, at the last evaluation, among sulfosate rates of 3.0; 4.0; and 4.7 l/ha, when all these reached rice control around 90%. When herbicide concentration was maintained constant, the responses to herbicide rates were not significant.In the third condition, when herbicide rate was fixed, it was observed that sulfosate action increased at higher concentrations. Control levels around 90% were reached with herbicide concentration of 2% or higher. This demonstrates that application parameters of sulfosate may be modified in order to obtain greater efficiency in its action.

Realizou-se experimento na Estação Experimental Agronômica/UFRGS, em Eldorado do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, em 1995/96, com o objetivo de avaliar efeitos do uso de subdoses de herbicidas sistêmicos não-seletivos em soja, aplicados em estádios avançados de desenvolvimento. Os herbicidas 2,4-D, nas doses de 5 e 10 g/ha e.a., imazapyr, a 25 e 50 g/ha e.a., e sulfosate, a 25 e 50 g/ha e.a., foram aspergidos no início do florescimento (estádio R.) ou no início da formação de legumes (estádio R,). Imazapyr, independente da dose utilizada, reduziu a altura de inserção do primeiro legume e a estatura das plantas de soja, quando aplicado no início do florescimento, e reduziu o número de grãos por legume, quando aplicado no início da formação dos legumes. lmazapyr também reduziu o rendimento de grãos de soja, principalmente, quando aplicado no início da formação dos legumes, reduzindo este parâmetro em 48%, com 25 g/ha, e em 81%, com 50 g/ha, quando comparados à testemunha. O herbicida 2,4-1) não diferiu da testemunha para as variáveis avaliadas. Sulfosate em relação à testemunha, aumentou o rendimento de grãos da cultura em 10%, na média das doses utilizadas.

O objetivo da pesquisa foi investigar os aspectos da inter-relação da dose herbicida, sua concentração na solução e o volume do veículo diluente na ação do herbicida sulfosate, usando-se aveia-preta como espécie reagente. O experimento foi conduzido no ano agrícola de 1994 na EEA/UFRGS, em Eldorado do Sul, RS. Foram testadas cinco doses de sulfosate (0,75; 1,125; 1,5; 2,25 e 3,0 l ha-1 do produto comercial); cinco volumes de diluente (62; 94; 125; 188 e 250 l ha-1); e cinco concentrações de produto na calda (0,6; 0,9; 1,2; l,8 e 2,4% v/v), mais três padrões para comparação: glyphosate, paraquat+diuron e testemunha não tratada. Em cada situação, um desses parâmetros era mantido constante. Não houve diferença estatística na ação de glyphosate e sulfosate quando ambos foram usados sob as mesmas condições de aplicação. Ao se manter constante a variável volume de calda, constatou-se resposta significativa à dose de sulfosate. Esse comportamento se repetiu quando se manteve constante a concentração herbicida na calda e se variou a dose do produto. Em ambas as situações, níveis finais de controle, variáveis entre 90 e 100%, somente foram alcançados por doses de sulfosate de l,125 l ha-1 ou superiores; dose de 0,75 l ha-1 atingiu apenas 80% de controle. Já quando se manteve constante a dose herbicida, variando-se a concentração do sulfosate na calda, não houve diferença entre os tratamentos. Plantas de aveia tratadas no florescimento com 0,75 l ha-1 de sulfosate acumularam parcialmente reservas nos grãos, os quais também mostraram viabilidade de germinação em bioteste.The objective of this research was to investigate aspects of inter-relations of herbicide rate, its concentration in spray solution, and volume of vehicle diluent in the herbicide action of sulfosate, using oats as reagent species. The experiment was conducted during the 1994, growing season at the EEA/UFRGS, in Eldorado do Sul, RS, Brazil. There were tested five rates of sulfosate (0.75; 1.125; 1.5; 2.5; and 3,0 l ha-1 of formulated product); five diluent volumes (62; 94; 125; 188; and 250 l ha-1); and five concentrations in spray solution (0.6; 0.9; 1.2; 1.8; and 2.4% v/v); and also three standard treatments to compare with: glyphosate, paraquat + diuron, and a check plot not treated. In each situation, one of these parameters was maintained constant. There was no statistical differences in action between glyphosate and sulfosate when both were used under the same application conditions. At maintaining spray volume variable constant, it was detected significant response to sulfosate rate. This same behaviour repeated when herbicide concentration in spray solution was maintained constant and product rate varied. In both situations, final levels of control, varying between 90 and 100%, were reached only by sulfosate rates of 1.125 l ha-1 or higher; rate of 0.75 l ha-1 reached maximum control of 80%. When herbicide rate was maintained fixed, varying sulfosate concentration in spray solution, there were no differences among treatments. Oat plants treated at flowering with 0.75 l ha-1 of sulfosate partially accumulated reserves in grains, which also showed viability of germination in biossay.

Durante as estações de crescimento de 1993 e 1994 foram conduzidos dois experimentos, sendo um em vaso sob telado, na Faculdade de Agronomia da UFRGS, em Porto Alegre/RS, e outro em condições de campo, na Estação Experimental Agronômica da UFRGS, em Eldorado do Sul/RS. 0 objetivo do trabalho foi investigar o grau de tolerância de alguns genótipos de aveia branca, aveia preta e trigo aos herbicidas graminicidas aplicados em pós-emergência. Avaliaram-se dez genótipos de aveia branca (Avena sativa), aveia preta (Avena strigosa) e trigo (Triticum aestivum), tratados com os herbicidas clethodim, diclofop, fenoxaprop, fluazifop, haloxyfop e sethoxydim. As variáveis avaliadas foram fitotoxicidade visual e rendimento de grãos. Constatou-se que fenoxaprop controla essas aveias em nível superior a 98% e apresenta seletividade ao trigo (BR-23). O diclofop apresenta controle acima de 94% para aveia branca, enquanto para aveia preta mostra dano médio e apresenta alta seletividade ao trigo. Os demais herbicidas apresentaram-se como não seletivos para todos os genótipos testados.During the growing seasons of the 1993 and 1994, two trials were conducted, being one in pots in greenhouse, at the UFRGS Agronomy School, in Porto Alegre/RS, and the other at field conditions at the UFRGS Agronomic Experimental Station, in Eldorado do Sul/RS. The objective of this research was to investigate tolerance levels of grain oat genotypes, of forage oats, and of wheat to herbicides with grass activity applied in post-emergence. Ten oat genotypes (Avena sativa L.) forage oats (Avena strigosa Schreb), and wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), were evaluated, which were treated with the herbicides clethodim, diclofop, fenoxaprop, fluazifop, haloxyfop, and sethoxydim. Variables evaluated were plant injury by visual rating, and grain yield. It was detected that fenoxaprop controls both oat species at level over 98% and presents selectivity to wheat (BR-23). On the other hand, diclofop presents control level higher than 94% for grain oat, whereas for forage oats shows moderate damage, and presents high selectivity for wheat. The remainder herbicides behaved as not selective for all genotypes tested.

Alguns herbicidas não-seletivos usados no sistema de semeadura direta (plantio direto) podem ser parcialmente neutralizados pela água utilizada como veículo para aspersão. Isso pode ocorrer se o água empregada apresentar colóides orgânicos ou minerais em suspensão, os quais podem adsorver as moléculas dos herbicidas. O objetivo desse trabalho foi investigar o efeito de águas com diferentes origens e características químicas na atividade do herbicida glifosato. Os tratamentos foram formados por diversas águas minerais (Cuxambu, Da Guarda, Fonte Azul, Fontes de Belém, Fonte Ijuí. Fonte da Ilha, Itati, Minalba e Sarandi) e água destilada, usada como veículo de aspersão acrescidas de 450 g/ha e. a. de glifosato, sendo a aveia-preta a espécie reagente. Como resultados, constatou-se que apenas aos I2 e 15 dias após tratamento (DAT) ocorreram diferenças entre as águas, quando aquelas das marcas Da Guarda, Fonte Azul e Fonte Ijuí reduziram a atividade do glifosato em comparação às águas Fonte Sarandi, Itati e a destilada. Nas duas últimas avaliações (21 e 28 DAT) nenhuma das águas minerais afetou o desempenho do glifosato em comparação com a água destilada, demonstrando assim. não existir efeitos negatives dessas águas minerais na atuação daquele herbicida.Some non-selective herbicides used in no-till system may be partially neutralized in water utilized as spray vehicle. This can occur if the water employed contains orgânic or mineral coloids in suspension, which may adsorb herbicide molecules. The objective of this research was to investigate the effect of water from diferent origins and chemical characteristics on glyphosate activity. Treatments consisted of various mineral pource waters (Caxambu, Da Guarda, Fonte Azul, Fontes de Belém, Fonte Ijuí, Fonte da Ilha, Itati, Minalba e Sarandi) and also distitled water utilizing glyphosate rate of 450 g/ha a. e., that were applied over oat plants. Phytotoxicity loas visually evaluated at 7, 12, 15, 21 and 28 days after applications (DAA). It was observed that only ar 12 and 15 DAA occured diferences between waters. Da Guarda, Fonte Azul, and Fonte Ijuí reduced glyphosate activity in comparison to Fonte Sarandi, Itati and destilled waters. In the latest tuo evaluations (21 and 28 date) none of the mineral waters differed from destilled water shouing no negative effects of such waters on herbicide action of glyphosate.

O sistema de semeadura direta de culturas de verão requer a utilização de espécies de inverno com a finalidade de cobrir o solo e fornecer palha ao sistema, sendo a aveia-preta a principal espécie utilizada no Rio Grande do Sul para esta finalidade. Com o objetivo de avaliar o desenvolvimento e a produtividade do milho estabelecido sobre partes de aveia-preta e de sistemas de adubação nitrogenada, realizou-se um experimento na Estação Experimental Agronômica da UFRGS, em Eldorado do Sul, RS, na safra 1996/97. Os tratamentos constaram de quatro sistemas de pré-semeadura do milho (milho semeado sobre restos de plantas inteiras, partes radicais e partes aéreas de plantas de aveia-preta, e na ausência de resteva desta espécie), bem como de quatro sistemas de adubação nitrogenada (0/0, 30/90, 60/60 e 0/120 kg/ha de N na base/cober- tura, respectivamente). A semeadura do milho sobre partes ou plantas inteiras de aveia-preta provocou reduções na emergên- cia, na massa seca aos 15 dias após a emergência (DAE) e na estatura das plantas de milho aos 15 e 28 DAE. Os melhores resultados para massa seca e estatura das plantas de milho aos 15 e 28 DAE foram obtidos com a utilização de 60/60 kg/ha de nitrogénio, na média das coberturas vegetais. lá para as variáveis estatura final, área foliar e rendimento de grãos não houve diferenças entre as formas de parcelamento da adubação nitrogenada, sendo os valores alcançados com a aplicação do nitro- gênio superiores aos obtidos na ausência do mesmo. Conclui-se que a presença de diferentes partes de aveia-preta reduz o desenvolvimento inicial das plantas de milho, não reduzindo o rendimento de grãos da cultura quando esta recebe adubação nitrogenada.

Foi realizado um experimento a campo, em Eldorado do Sul, RS, no ano agrícola de 1994/95 para avaliar a influência de classes de espécies daninhas (poaceae e dicotiledôneas) na redução do rendimento de soja, em função do método e da época de controle. O preparo do solo e a semeadura foram realizados do modo convencional. O delineamento experimental foi de blocos casualizados, em que os tratamentos foram uma testemunha infestada, e outra onde as plantas de soja foram arrancadas aos 14 dias após a emergência (DAE) e a poaceae infestante (papuã, Brachiaria plantaginea) controlada quimicamente. Os demais tratamentos foram de controle químico do papuã ou do controle geral das invasoras, feitos química ou mecanicamente, realizados aos 14, 21 e 28 DAE. Foram avaliadas a cobertura do solo e a matéria seca produzida por plantas daninhas e de soja em duas épocas. Os maiores valores de cobertura do solo e de produção de matéria seca de plantas daninhas foram obtidos para as espécies dicotiledôneas, no tratamento onde as plantas de soja e de papuã foram eliminadas. Com o passar do tempo, as plantas daninhas mostraram redução na cobertura do solo, enquanto que a produção de matéria seca aumentou. Todos os tratamentos de controle de ervas superaram a testemunha infestada em rendimento de grãos, sem diferirem entre si. O controle de plantas daninhas aplicado entre a 2' e a 4' semanas após a emergência da soja não reduz o rendimento de grãos. O papuã foi o principal responsável pela redução do rendimento. A presença de espécies dicotiledôneas é diminuída pela presença de papuã, que provoca o desaparecimento de algumas delas.

Prováveis efeitos negativos do pH elevado e de sais presentes na água usada para aspersão sobre a atividade herbicida podem ser superados através da adição de substâncias como ácidos e/ou compostos nitrogenados. O objetivo desse trabalho foi avaliar o efeito de águas com diferentes origens e o da adição de sulfato de amônio na atividade do herbicida glyphosate. Os tratamentos foram as doses de 90 a 180 g/ha e. a. de glyphosate, com e sem sulfato de amônio (1,25% p/v), diluídas nas águas minerais Fonte Azul, Fonte Ijuí, Fonte Sarandi e água destilada, aplicados sobre a aveia-preta. Acrescentou- se ainda um tratamento testemunha sem aplicação herbicida. A fitotoxicidade foi avaliada aos 5, 11 e 19 dias pós aplicações. Como resultados, constatou-se nas três avaliações que a dose de 180 g/ha de glyphosate causou maior fitotoxicidade do que a de 90 g/ha, o que se repetiu para matéria seca. Também duas das avaliações indicaram que adição de sulfato de amônio à calda aumentou a ação do herbicida. Apenas na última avaliação, a água Fonte Sarandi originou maior atividade de glyphosate sobre aveia-preta do que as águas Fonte Azul e destilada. Fica demonstrado que a atividade herbicida de glyphosate não é grandemente afetada pelo tipo de diluente empregado, mas que a adição de sulfato de amônio aumenta sua fitotoxicidade.

Foi realizado um experimento a campo em Eldorado do Sul, RS, no ano agrícola de 19 94 /9 5, para avaliar o controle de papuã (Brachiaria plantaginea (Linck) Hitchc.), que ocorreu numa população média de 95 plantas/m2. Foi avaliado o herbicida clethodim à dose-plena (120g/ ha) e à meia-dose (60g/ha). A cultivar de soja utilizada foi RS-7 Jacuí e usado o delineamento experimental em blocos casualizados com quatro repetições. Os tratamentos foram aplicados aos 14, 21, 28 e 35 dias após a emergência da soja (DAE). Foram mantidas testemunhas capinadas, com operações iniciadas nas mesmas épocas de aplicação do herbicida, e uma testemunha infestada durante todo o ciclo da cultura. O controle foi avaliado visualmente, em três ocasiões, através de escala percentual. Os graus de controle de papua obtidos à dose-plena foram equivalentes entre si quando aplicado nas três primeiras épocas, com eficiência entre 95 e 98% na última avaliação. A meia-dose mostrou, para as três primeiras épocas de aplicação, resultados semelhantes aos de doseplena, porém em níveis um pouco inferiores, situando-se entre 85 e 95% o controle obtido na última avaliação. O controle do papuã foi mediano quando clethodim foi aplicado aos 35 DAE, tanto par a dose-plena quanto para meiadose. Quanto ao rendimento de grãos, não houve diferença estatística significativa entre os tratamentos em suas várias modalidades, embora todos tenham superado a testemunha infestada, com incrementos na produtividade de grãos entre 73 e 10 5% . O experimento permite concluir pela viabilidade da utilização de meiadose de clethodim para o controle de papua em soja, realizando as aplicações preferencialmente até a quarta semana após a emergência da cultura.A field trial was carried out in Eldorado do Sul, RS, during the 1994/95 growing season to evaluate Alexandergrass (Brachiaria plantaginea (Linck ) Hitchc ) control, that occurred with na average population of 95 plants/m2. The herbicide used was clethodim at full-rate (120g/ha) and at half-rate (60g/ha). The tested cultivar was RS-7 Jacuí and it was use d a complete randomized blocks design with four replicates. The treatments were applied at 14, 21, 28, and 35 days after soybean emergence (DAE) . Hand hoeing treatments were included, and started at the same date of herbicide applications. A weeded check was kept during all crop cycle. Control evaluations were visualy performed in three opportunities using percentual scale. The levels of Alexandergrass control got with full herbicide rate were equival ents when clethodim was applied at the three first times. Its efficiency ranged from 95 to 98% at the last evaluation. Half herbicide rate showed si mil ar trends at the la st eval uation, although at lower levels, ranging from 85 to 95% control for the three first application times. Alexandergrass control was only fair when clethodim was applied at 35 DAE at either rate. Grain yield did not show differences between treatments except for weedy check; nevertheless, all of them supplanted the weeded treatment with increments ranging from 73 to 105%. This trial allows to conclude that it is possible to use half-rate of clethodim to control Alexandergrass in soybean, being the application done preferably until the fourth week after soybean emergence .

Tentativas de aumentar a fitotoxicidade do herbicida glyphosate através da adição de ácido e/ ou de sulfato de amônio à calda tem sido promissoras. A adição dessas substâncias otimiza as propriedades químicas da calda herbicida, superando efeitos negativos do pH elevado e de ions nela presentes. O objetivo desse trabalho foi investigar o efeito da adição de ácido sulfúrico e/ou de sulfato de amônio à calda herbicida, sobre a eficiência do glyphosate misturado em diluente com alto pH e teores elevados de sais. Os tratamentos envolveram cinco doses de glyphosate (variáveis de 180 a 540 g/ha i.a.) diluídas em água destilada e, mais glyphosate a 270 g/ha misturado às águas minera is Fonte Azul e Fonte Ijuí em presença de ácido sulfúrico (0,5 1/ha) e/ou sulfato de amônio (2 ,5 kg/h a) . A fitotoxicidade foi avaliada aos 7, 17 e 27 dias após as aplicações do herbicida sobre a aveia preta. Os resultados demonstraram que a aveia-preta é muito suscetível à ação de glyphosate, mesmo aplicado a 270 g/ha, independente da água utilizada ou da adição de adjuvantes e, que a adição de ácido sulfúrico e/ou de sulfato de amônio à calda não alterou a atividade do herbicida.Attempts to increase phytotoxicity of glyphosat e her bic ide through addition of acid and/or of ammonium sulphate to the spray solution have been promising. Addition of these substances optimize chemical properties of the herbicide spray, overcoming negative effects of high pH and of íons present in it. The objective of this research was to investigate the effect of sulphuric acid and/or of ammonium sulphate addition to herbicide spray, on the efficiency of glyphosate mixed in diluents with high pH and high salts content. Glyphosate treatments consisted of five rates (variables from 180 to 540 g/ha a.e.), diluted in distilled water, and also glyph osate at 270 g/h a a. e. mix ed in the mineral waters Fonte Azul and Fonte Ijuí. To this herbicide rate, it was added 0,5 1/ha of sulphuric acid and /or 2,5 kg/ha of ammonium sulphate, whose treatments were sprayed over oat plants. Herbicide toxicity was evaluated at 7, 17, and 27 days after applications. Results showed that oats was very susceptible to glyphosate action, even when applied at 270 g/ha, independent of water used or adjuvantes added. It is concluded that addition of sulphuric acid and/or of ammonium sulphate to spray solution do not increase herbicide activity of glyphosate.

This article presents a novel estimator based on sensor fusion, which combines the Neural Network (NN) with a Kalman filter in order to estimate the vehicle roll angle. The NN estimates a “pseudo-roll angle” through variables that are easily measured from Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors. An IMU is a device that is commonly used for vehicle motion detection, and its cost has decreased during recent years. The pseudo-roll angle is introduced in the Kalman filter in order to filter noise and minimize the variance of the norm and maximum errors’ estimation. The NN has been trained for J-turn maneuvers, double lane change maneuvers and lane change maneuvers at different speeds and road friction coefficients. The proposed method takes into account the vehicle non-linearities, thus yielding good roll angle estimation. Finally, the proposed estimator has been compared with one that uses the suspension deflections to obtain the pseudo-roll angle. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed NN and Kalman filter-based estimator.

doses reduzidas dos herbicidas haloxyfop-methyl e sethoxydim para controlar papuã [Brachiaria plantaginea (Link) Hitchc.] na cultura da soja [Glycine max (L.) Merrill. Haloxyfop-methyl foi testado nas doses de 120, 90, 60 e 30+30 g/ha; já sethoxydim o foi nas doses de 220, 165, 110 e 55+55 g/ha. A pulverização dos herbicidas ocorreu 15 dias após a semeadura da soja; nesta ocasião, a maioria das plantas de papuã encontravam-se no estádio de três a quatro folhas. Os tratamentos herbicidas com doses reduzidas em aplicações seqüenciais, tiveram a segunda pulverização realizada 11 dias após a primeira aplicação. Foi obtido controle ao redor de 95% para todos os tratamentos, com pequenas variações não significativas. O rendimento de grãos de soja foi equivalente entre a testemunha capinada e os tratamentos haloxyfop-methyl a 90 e 60 g/ha, sethoxydim a 220, 110 e 55+55 g/ha. Os demais tratamentos foram semelhantes entre si, superando a testemunha infestada, a qual apresentou o menor rendimento de grãos. Os resultados evidenciam a viabilidade da utilização de doses reduzidas, as quais podem alcançar patamares de produtividade tão elevados quanto aqueles obtidos com doses plenas.During the 1993/94 growing season, it was carried out a field experiment at the Agronomic Experimental Station of Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, in Eldorado do Sul, RS, Brazil, in order to evaluate the possibility of using reduced rates of the herbicides haloxyfop-methyl and sethoxydim for Alexandergrass [Brachiaria plafitaginea (Link) Hitchc.] control in soybeans. Haloxyfop-methyl was tested at 120, 90, 60, and 30+30 g/ha, where as sethoxydim was at rates, of 220, 165, 110, and 55+55 g/ha. Herbicide spraying occurred 15 days after soybean sowing; at this time Alexandergrass plants ranged from one leaf to one tiller. Herbicide treatments using reduced rates in sequential applications had the second spraying accomplished 11 days after the first one. It was obtained Alexandergrass control around 95% for all the treatments, with small but not significant variations among them. Soybean seed yield was equivalent for the hoeing check, haloxyfop-methvl at 90 and 60 g/ha and sethoxydim at 220, 110, and 55+55 g/ha. The additional treatments were equivalents among them, but all surpassed the weeded check, which produced the lowest yield. These results evidence the possibility of using reduced herbicides rates, which may reach yield levels as high as those attained with full rates.

RESUMO A relação entre exposições ocupacionais, compostos químicos e doenças é conhecida há muito tempo e está no cerne do campo saúde-trabalho-ambiente. A pobreza presente na vida de numerosos trabalhadores brasileiros cria um cenário de vulnerabilidade social, gerando riscos à saúde. Este estudo tem por objetivo discutir a importância dos fatores socioeconômicos na avaliação da exposição ocupacional e a relação com o processo de saúde/doença dos trabalhadores, por meio de uma revisão exploratória da literatura. Diversos fatores estão ligados à forma como o trabalhador se relaciona com a exposição, como as condições de vida, moradia, acesso a serviços de saúde e educação, nível salarial e escolar.

Abstract: The goals of this study were to evaluate herbicide application rates at different timings for preharvest desiccation of wheat (Trial 1), as well as to evaluate the effect of the timing of herbicide desiccation at preharvest and harvest timing (Trial 2) on yield, germination, and herbicide residue in wheat seed. In Trial 1, treatments consisted of two application rates of glufosinate, glyphosate, paraquat, or paraquat+diuron and a control without application; application time periods were in the milk grain to early dough stage, soft dough to hard dough stage, and hard dough stage. In Trial 2, treatments consisted of different application time periods (milk grain to early dough stage, and soft dough to hard dough stage), different herbicides (glufosinate, 2,4-D+glyphosate, and untreated control), and different harvest times (5, 10 and 15 days after herbicide application). One thousand seeds weight, yield, first and final germination count, and herbicide residue on seeds were evaluated. Preharvest desiccation with paraquat, glufosinate, and 2,4-D+glyphosate at the milk grain to early dough stage reduces wheat yield. Regardless of the herbicide and application rate, application in the milk grain to early dough stage and soft dough to hard dough stage provides greater germination of wheat seeds, except at the lower dose of paraquat. Systemic herbicides accumulate more in wheat seeds.
