Paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) are a large group of marine biotoxins (~50 analogues), mainly produced by marine dinoflagellates of the genera Alexandrium, Gymnodinium and Pyrodinium, which are more typical in tropical and temperate climate zones. All members of the toxin group share a common core structure. Still, the combination of different chemical functionalities defines the subgroup of each analogue (e.g., carbamoyl, N-sulfocarbamoyl, decarbamoyl, benzoyl), influencing its toxicological action and determining the level of toxicity of each member. PSTs are prone to biotransformations within living organisms, affording analogues with higher or lower toxicity. Such biotransformations may be mediated by different agents (e.g., enzymes, natural reducing agents, bacteria) in different living organisms undergoing chemical processes, leading to diverse outcomes. This work intends to highlight the main reactions (bioconversions) that occur in living organisms (dinoflagellates, bivalves, and humans) and relate changes in molecular structure, caused by such responses, to toxicity. Additionally, we also present research under development aiming to create chemical solutions for the decontamination of bivalve molluscs, thus helping to minimize this problem’s social and economic impacts.

Relatório de Estágio do Mestrado Integrado em Ciências Farmacêuticas apresentado à Faculdade de Farmácia The Master's Thesis carried out under the Integrated Master's in Pharmaceutical Sciences is endowed with three main areas: Internship Report in Community Pharmacy, Internship Report in Pharmaceutical Industry and Monograph entitled "Properties of Mushrooms in the Adjuvant Treatment of Cancer: Targets and Efficacy".The Integrated Master in Pharmaceutical Sciences (MICF) of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Coimbra offers the opportunity to undertake a curricular internship in the last year of academic training, with the Community Pharmacy area being mandatory. This opportunity is an asset for the student as it allows the first contact with the professional reality and provides the consolidation of acquired theoretical knowledge and learning of new skills inherent to the profession of pharmacist in this sector. In this context, I joined the Pharmacy Saúde de Lavos, located in Figueira da Foz, where I acquired knowledge about the functioning of the pharmacy as well as experienced the closest contact between the pharmacist and the user. In addition to the usual area of Community Pharmacy, I had the opportunity to do an internship in another area, more specifically in Pharmaceutical Industry, which allowed me to broaden my knowledge and explore alternative aspects of the pharmaceutical domain. Therefore, I joined the Pharmilab team, a consultant specialized in the area of cosmetics, medical devices, food supplements and biocides, where I incorporated the laboratory environment, with a focus on Quality Control. These reports will be presented in the form of SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats), with the main purpose of portraying all activities as an intern based on the criteria of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats experienced during the internships.The purpose of this monograph is to provide an overview of the fundamentals of cancer and to highlight, in turn, breast cancer and cervical cancer, the incidence and prevalence of cancer today, as well as existing therapies and its disadvantages. It is also intended to address the constitution and composition of mushrooms, emphasize their potential role in the adjuvant treatment of cancer, highlighting their antitumor and immunomodulatory properties, as well as highlighting the key targets that contribute to these characteristics. The approach to scientific evidence (in vitro, in vivo and clinical trials) and pharmacological efficacy are also discussed. Finally, the products sold in Portugal are discussed. A Tese de Mestrado realizada no âmbito do Mestrado Integrado em Ciências Farmacêuticas é dotada de três áreas principais: Relatório de Estágio em Farmácia Comunitária, Relatório de Estágio em Indústria Farmacêutica e Monografia intitulada “Propriedades dos Cogumelos no Tratamento Adjuvante do Cancro: Alvos e Eficácia”.O Mestrado Integrado em Ciências Farmacêuticas (MICF) da Faculdade de Farmácia da Universidade de Coimbra disponibiliza no último ano de formação académica a oportunidade de realizar um estágio curricular, sendo obrigatório a área de Farmácia Comunitária. Esta oportunidade é uma mais-valia para o estudante pois permite o primeiro contacto com a realidade profissional e proporciona a consolidação dos conhecimentos teóricos adquiridos e aprendizagem de novas competências inerentes à profissão do farmacêutico neste setor. Neste âmbito, ingressei na Farmácia Saúde de Lavos, localizada na Figueira da Foz, onde adquiri conhecimentos acerca do funcionamento da farmácia bem como experienciei o contacto mais próximo do farmacêutico em relação ao utente. Para além da habitual área da Farmácia Comunitária, tive a oportunidade de realizar um estágio numa outra área, mais especificamente em Indústria Farmacêutica, o que me permitiu alargar conhecimentos e explorar vertentes alternativas do domínio farmacêutico. Assim sendo, integrei a equipa da Pharmilab, uma consultora especializada na área dos cosméticos, dispositivos médicos, suplementos alimentares e biocidas, onde incorporei o ambiente laboratorial, com foco no Controlo da Qualidade. Os presentes relatórios serão apresentados sob a forma de análise SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats), tendo como finalidade principal, retratar todas as atividades enquanto estagiária com base nos critérios pontos fortes, pontos fracos, oportunidades e ameaças experienciados no decorrer dos estágios.A elaboração da presente monografia tem por objetivo fornecer uma visão geral sobre os fundamentos do cancro e destacar, por sua vez, o cancro da mama e o cancro do colo do útero, a incidência e a prevalência do cancro na atualidade, assim como as terapêuticas existentes e suas desvantagens. Pretende-se, também, abordar a constituição e composição dos cogumelos, dar ênfase ao seu potencial papel no tratamento adjuvante do cancro, dando realce às suas propriedades antitumorais e imunomoduladoras, bem como realçar os alvos-chave que contribuem para essas características. A abordagem de evidências científicas (in vitro, in vivo e ensaios clínicos) e a eficácia farmacológica são igualmente discutidas. Por fim, são abordados os produtos comercializados em Portugal.

Revista de História da Arte - Serie W, issue 9, is the result of the international conference Art in the Periphery - hommage to Foteini Vlachou, which took place between 14 and 16 March 2019, organized by the IHA and the IHC of NOVA FCSH. In addition to the thematic dossier, which brings together seven articles by authors participating in the conference, this publication also includes an essay by Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel and other relevant contributions. The diversity of the texts make this issue of RHA-W an important reference for reflecting on the idea of 'periphery', a key concept in Foteini Vlachou's work to think about Art History beyond the canon. The journal's title retrieves the subtitle of the research network created by Vlachou for the work on the periphery: Art in the Periphery - Life outside the canon., Leal, J. C., Santos, M. P. D. Dissertação de mestrado integrado em Psicologia, As perturbações do comportamento alimentar têm mostrado ser bastante complexas e, por isso, a investigação tem procurado identificar processos transdiagnósticos subjacentes a estas, como a consciência interoceptiva e a regulação emocional. Assim, o presente estudo procurou perceber a relação entre a consciência interoceptiva e a regulação emocional no comportamento alimentar. A amostra era constituída por 202 estudantes de Psicologia da Universidade do Minho (maioritariamente do sexo feminino) aos quais foram apresentados, de forma online, um conjunto de questionários que procuravam avaliar o comportamento alimentar, a consciência interoceptiva, a regulação emocional, a depressão, ansiedade e stress, a evitamento experiencial e a atenção plena. Neste estudo foi possível confirmar a relação positiva entre as dificuldades de regulação emocional e comportamentos alimentares desadequados e a relação negativa entre a consciência interoceptiva e as dificuldades de regulação emocional e o comportamento alimentar desajustado. Para além disto, verificou-se um papel mediador das dificuldades de regulação emocional entre a consciência interoceptiva e o comportamento alimentar. Esta mediação também se evidenciou no sentido contrário, ou seja, as dificuldades de regulação emocional mediaram também a relação entre o comportamento alimentar e a consciência interoceptiva., Eating disorders have proven to be quite complex and, therefore, some research has been done to identify transdiagnostic processes underlying these behaviors, such as interoceptive awareness and emotional regulation. Thus, the present study aims to understand the relationship between interoceptive awareness and emotional regulation in eating behavior. The sample consisted of 202 Psychology students from the University of Minho (mostly female) who were presented, online, with a set of questionnaires that seek to asses eating behavior, interoceptive awareness, emotional regulation, depression, anxiety and stress, experiential avoidance and mindfulness. This study confirmed the positive relationship between difficulties in emotional regulation and inappropriate eating behaviors and the negative relationship between interoceptive awareness and difficulties in emotional regulation and maladjusted eating behavior. In addition, the difficulties of emotional regulation had a mediation role between interoceptive awareness and eating behavior. This mediation was also evident in the opposite direction, that is, the difficulties in emotional regulation also mediated the relationship between the eating behavior and interoceptive awareness.

Com o nascimento de um filho vem apenas uma certeza, a vida muda completamente. Desde esse dia, a aprendizagem começa e as mudanças são frequentes. Temos a casa como primeira escola e os pais como primeiros professores (Weston, 1989: 2). Com o passar dos anos, vem a entrada dos filhos na escola, o que altera mais uma vez toda a dinâmica familiar, desde a adaptação dos horários laborais aos escolares, passando pela preocupação dos pais em acompanhar os assuntos escolares, até à forma como as famílias se relacionam com as escolas. A presente investigação procura revelar de que forma as famílias portuguesas gerem a escolaridade dos seus filhos. Procuramos perceber qual é o impacto que a escola causa na vida em família, que estilos de coordenação praticam estas famílias em relação às escolas dos seus filhos, que representações as famílias fazem das escolas e quais são as suas práticas de apoio à escolaridade dos filhos. Além disso, analisamos em que medida a estrutura familiar e/ou a escolaridade das famílias influencia este impacto, as práticas e as representações familiares. Como forma de atingirmos os nossos objetivos foram entrevistadas oito famílias com estruturas biparentais e monoparentais e com níveis de escolaridade diversificados. As principais conclusões que pudemos retirar desta investigação foram que realmente a escola obriga as famílias a uma constante adaptação, assim como se verificou que a escolaridade tem maior influência do que a estrutura familiar na organização da vida em família e nas representações e práticas familiares relativas à educação escolar. With the birth of a child comes only one certainty, life changes completely. Since that day, learning begins, and changes are frequent. “Parents are a child’s first teachers; and families are their first, and most enduring, school” (Weston, 1989: 2). Time goes by and children start to go to school, which once again changes the entire family dynamics, from the adaptation of working schedules to the school schedules, to the parental concern with school matters, and even the way families relate to their children’s school. This investigation aims to show how Portuguese families manage their kids schooling. We tried to understand the impact of school in family life, in what ways do families interact and coordinate with their children’s schools, what families say about schools and what families do to support their kids schooling. Moreover, we analyzed in what way family structure and/or family education level impact on these aspects. To achieve our goals, we interviewed eight families with two-parent and single parent structures, as well as diversified levels of education. The main conclusions we can get from this investigation are that the school really does requires families to constantly adapt, as well as we were able to verify that family education level has a bigger influence than family structure in the way families organize their lives and in the family representations and practices that concern to school education.

Nesta investigação, assume-se como hipótese teórica fundamental a “persistência do duplo padrão sexual”, i.e., a existência de diferenças significativas entre o género feminino e masculino relativamente ao Amor Triangular e às Atitudes Sexuais, definindo-se um desenho de investigação transversal, com recurso à metodologia quantitativa. A amostra do estudo, recolhida de forma não probabilística, é constituída por 136 sujeitos dos quais 36 são do sexo masculino e 132 do sexo feminino. A amostra foi recolhida entre julho e dezembro de 2018. No processo de amostragem, recorreu-se a sujeitos mediadores que distribuíram os questionários pelos seus contactos em redes sociais online. Os instrumentos incluem: Questionário sociodemográfico e psicossexual (construído para esta investigação), Escala do Amor Triangular de Sternberg, Escala de Atitudes Sexuais de Hendrick & Hendrick. Os resultados mostram que, no âmbito do Amor Triangular, o grupo feminino valoriza mais as dimensões intimidade, paixão e compromisso do que o sexo masculino. Relativamente às atitudes sexuais, o grupo masculino revela mais permissividade, enquanto o grupo feminino denota maior comunhão, não havendo diferenças significativas nas práticas sexuais e instrumentalidade. In this investigation, it is assumed as a fundamental theoretical hypothesis the ‘persistence of the sexual double standard’, i.e., the existence of significant gender differences regarding Triangular Love and Sexual Attitudes. The research design adopts a cross-sectional procedure and focuses on quantitative data collection. The study sample, selected in a non-probabilistic way, consists of 136 subjects, of whom 36 are males and 132 are females. Data were collected between July and December 2018. In the sampling process, it has been used mediators who distributed the questionnaires through their contacts in online social networks. The instruments include: Sociodemographic and psychosexual questionnaire (built for this research), Sternberg Triangular Love Scale, Hendrick & Hendrick Sexual Attitudes Scale. The results show that within Triangular Love the female group values intimacy, passion and commitment more than the male sex. Regarding sexual attitudes, the male group reveals more permissiveness, while the female group denotes greater communion, with no significant differences in sexual practices and instrumentality.

O presente projeto de investigação tem como principal intencionalidade compreender o impacto de uma sequência didática com recurso à autorregulação no desempenho posterior dos alunos do 1º Ciclo do Ensino Básico no que concerne às competências de expressão oral, mais concretamente em tarefas de exposição oral formal. Este trabalho é baseado na abordagem de investigação-ação e visa uma interpretação das informações recolhidas no contexto, assim como da intervenção realizada, que teve como objetivos a aquisição e mobilização das habilidades formais de uma exposição oral. As principais fontes de recolha de informação são a observação participante, as entrevistas aos alunos e a análise documental das planificações e autoavaliações dos alunos. O contexto de estudo está enquadrado na instituição onde foi desenvolvido o estágio, no âmbito do Mestrado em Educação Pré-Escolar e Ensino do 1º Ciclo do Ensino Básico, e os participantes do estudo são uma amostra de três alunos do 2º ano de escolaridade. Na fase final do trabalho desenvolvido, foi feita a avaliação de todo o processo interventivo. Procedeu-se à análise dos objetivos gerais definidos e da evolução dos alunos no que respeita à exposição oral formal, constatando-se que a estratégia desenvolvida no estudo de investigação contribuiu para cumprir o objetivo proposto – implementar uma sequência didática com recurso à autorregulação e melhoramento das habilidades inerentes à exposição oral formal dos alunos do 1º ciclo do ensino básico. Como resultados obtidos verifica-se que os três alunos, com desempenho inicial diferente, alcançaram o mesmo objetivo final. This investigation project has as its main goal to understand the effects of a didactic working sequence using self-regulation in the development of first cycle students, mainly focusing in their formal speaking skills. This work is based on an investigation driven analysis in which the main source of information is obtained by active observation, such as performing student interviews and lesson plans and students’ self evaluation document analyses. The research was made for the Master degree in Kindergarten and First Cycle Basic Education, in the institution where the teacher training was developed, and it was based on the feedback of three of their second grade students. An evaluation was made at the final stage of this research concluding that the work developed fulfilled its goal, that was to create and apply a didactic working sequence using self-regulation for the improvement of formal speaking skills by second graders. The results show that the three students, with different initial performance, achieved the same final goals.

Doutoramento em Química As result of an increase in fish consumption and fisheries stagnation, aquaculture is a growing and widespread activity. The increasing density in aquaculture production potentiates the appearance of pathogenic microorganisms, like bacteria, requiring a greater health control, achieved with disinfectants. In some cases, the use of antibiotics may be necessary. In this work, two chemical compounds approved for aquaculture are studied: oxytetracycline (antibiotic) and formalin (disinfectant). In addition to the intentionally introduced compounds, several others reach these water systems indirectly. As example of an indirect contaminant, decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) was also included in this study. The photo-degradation under sunlight is one of the main routes of natural degradation of contaminants in surface waters and may be an economic process for treatment of contaminated waters before their reuse or discharge. However, this process is influenced by water matrix, namely the nature and concentration of organic matter and salts. Under the direct action of sunlight, BDE-209 and oxytetracycline (OTC) are rapidly degraded. However, in the presence of humic substances (HS), which are the main components of organic matter, the degradation of these two compounds is delayed. While the filter effect of light explains the delay on OTC photo-degradation, in the case of BDE-209, the hydrophobic interactions between the compound and the HS are the main reason for the delay. Salts and pH of marine aquaculture’s water favour the OTC photo-degradation relatively to deionized water. Calcium and magnesium have a strong influence on the kinetics and products of OTC photo-degradation. It should be noted that, in all saline matrices, the products resulting from OTC photo-degradation revealed no biological activity for E. coli, Aeromonas sp. and Vibrio sp., which is an advantage in what the bacterial resistance to this antibiotic is concerned. Formalin (aqueous formaldehyde) undergoes only indirect photo-degradation. Neat TiO2 and two visible light active TiO2 composites (TiO2–Tetra-phenyl porphyrin and TiO2–Graphene oxide) were tested as photo-catalysts. The combination of TiO2 with graphene oxide was the best choice for formalin degradation, under sunlight. However, the methodology proposed should be optimized in view of its application to marine aquaculture’s waters since the matrix of these waters reduces the photo-catalyst efficiency. In summary, the work carried out and disclosed herein has great application potential, especially in the aquaculture industry, but also in other water systems where these contaminants are present. A aquacultura é uma atividade em crescente expansão em resultado do aumento do consumo de peixe e da estagnação das pescas. O aumento da densidade de produção em aquacultura potencia o aparecimento de microrganismos patogénicos, como as bactérias, obrigando a um maior controlo sanitário que é feito com desinfetantes. Em alguns casos, pode ser necessário o uso de antibióticos. Neste trabalho são estudados dois compostos químicos autorizados em aquacultura: a oxitetraciclina (antibiótico) e a formalina (desinfetante). Além dos compostos introduzidos intencionalmente, existem outros que, por via indireta, atingem estes sistemas aquáticos. Como exemplo de um contaminante indireto, o éter deca-bromodifenilo (BDE-209) foi também incluído neste estudo. A foto-degradação com luz solar é uma das principais vias de degradação natural de contaminantes em águas superficiais e pode constituir uma via económica para o tratamento de águas contaminadas antes da sua descarga ou reutilização. Contudo, este é um processo influenciado pela matriz das águas, nomeadamente pela concentração e natureza da matéria orgânica e pelos sais. Sob a ação direta da luz solar, o BDE-209 e a oxitetraciclina (OTC) são degradados rapidamente. Contudo, na presença de substâncias húmicas (HS), que são as principais componentes da matéria orgânica, a degradação de ambos é retardada. Enquanto o efeito de filtro da luz explica o atraso da foto-degradação da OTC, no caso do BDE-209, as interações hidrofóbicas entre o composto e as HS são a razão principal desse atraso. Os sais e o pH das águas de aquacultura marinha favorecem a foto-degradação da OTC relativamente à água desionizada. O cálcio e o magnésio têm uma forte influência na cinética e nos produtos de foto-degradação da OTC. Importa salientar que, em todas as matrizes salinas, os produtos resultantes da foto-degradação da OTC não revelaram atividade biológica para a E. coli, Aeromonas sp. e Vibrio sp., o que é uma vantagem no que diz respeito à resistência bacteriana a este antibiótico. A formalina (formaldeído aquoso) apenas sofre foto-degradação indireta. O TiO2 puro e dois compósitos de TiO2 ativos na zona visível (TiO2–Tetra-fenilo porfirina e TiO2–óxido de grafeno) foram testados como foto-catalisadores. A conjugação de TiO2 com óxido de grafeno revelou-se a melhor escolha para a degradação da formalina, usando luz solar. Contudo, a metodologia proposta deverá ser otimizada com vista à sua aplicação a águas de aquacultura marinha, uma vez que a matriz destas águas reduz a eficiência do foto-catalisador. Em suma, o trabalho desenvolvido e aqui apresentado tem grande potencialidade de aplicação, em particular no setor da aquacultura, mas também em outros sistemas aquáticos onde estes contaminantes estejam presentes.

Transient osteoporosis of pregnancy (TOP) is a medical condition, self-limited, infrequent, occurring in women in the third trimester of pregnancy or immediate postpartum, usually affecting the joints of the lower limb, specially the hip joint, typically resolving within a few months after delivery. Radiographic studies describe loss of bone mass and edema in affected portion. We describe 2 cases of primigravid women, twin gestation with hip pain during the third trimester, who were diagnosed TOP by magnetic resonance. These women had a good clinical and analytical response to the instituted measures with a complete return to daily activities months after delivery.
