Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI) have severe consequences such as tetraplegia and paraplegia, which dramatically affect the healthcare of the patients. Successful therapies for such injuries are yet to be attainable. Currently, there is a focus on the study and implementation of small implantable devices that are capable of providing in-vivo electrical stimulation to the spinal cord. Since the impedance of the neural tissue experiences constant changes, the focus is on using current stimulation instead of voltage, to compensate the impedance variations. Furthermore, the usage of scaffolds to provide alignment on the regrown fibers, combined with electrical stimulation is viewed as possible solution for SCI therapy. The NeuroStim- Spinal project, in which this work is inserted, aims to propose a SCI therapy based on in-vivo electrical stimulation combined with 3D printed scaffolds that have in its composition based materials (GBM) and adipose derived decellularized tissue (adECM). The work presented is an application-specific integrated circuit design (ASIC) that provides current-mode stimulation for neuronal regeneration, with the objective of providing in-vivo electrical stimulation for SCI therapy. The main challenges on the design of such devices is in obtaining low circuit area and power consumption, while maintaining the specifications needed. These characteristics are important, since it is intended to be an implantable device. The stimulation circuit consists of, a communication interface with a microcontroller using the Serial Peripheral Communication (SPI) protocol, a 10-bit DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter) based on a binary charge scaling architecture, a voltage-to-current converter with a feed-forward voltage attenuator (FFVA) architecture, and a H-bridge circuit composed of CMOS switches to drive the scaffold. Results demonstrate that the system developed is capable of driving current from 0 to 200μA with an absolute error bellow 0.75μA. In addition, the developed circuit can provide these range of currents with high linearity to a 15k load impedance. The system can still provide linear stimulation for higher load impedance’s, but in smaller current ranges. Furthermore, the circuit uses a supply voltage of 5V and has an average power dissipation of 19.5mW. The ASIC was developed using a 0.35μm CMOS technology, has dimensions of 270μm per 700μm, which corresponds to a total area of 0.19mm2. The work was developed using the Cadence software. Lesões na Medula Espinhal são causadas sobretudo devido acidentes rodoviários, quedas e lesões na prática de desportos. Estas têm graves consequências no estado de saúde dos pacientes, uma vez que saõ responsáveis por diagnósticos como tetraplegia e paraplegia. Até hoje, terapias eficazes para este tipo de lesões ainda não foram conseguidas, o que torna esta temática num foco de estudo. Atualmente, uma das orientações deste foco de estudo está direcionado em dispositivos elétricos implantáveis capazes de estimular a espinal medula in-vivo, promovendo a regeneração da mesma. Adicionalmente, o uso de materiais (scaffolds) que permitem manter o alinhemento no crescimento das fibras, em conjunto com estimulação elétrica é vista como a solução consensual para terapias relacionadas com Lesões na Medula Espinhal. Assim, o projeto NeuroStimSpinal, na qual este trabalho se insere, foi proposto. Este tem como objetivo propor uma terapia para esta problemática usando estimulação elétrica em conjunto com scaffolds impressas em 3D. O trabalho apresentado nesta dissertação é baseado num circuito integrado de aplicação específica (CIAE) para estimulação em corrente da espinal medula, com o intuito de promover a regeneração da mesma. Os desafios na implementação deste tipo de circuitos estão relacionados com a necessidade destes terem de ser pequenos em tamanho e consumir uma potência reduzida, mantendo as características necessárias para a estimulação, uma vez que é necessário que o mesmo faça parte de um dispositivo implantável. O circuito de estimulação proposto consiste: numa interface de comunicação com a unidade de controlo (microcontrolador) usando o protocolo Serial Peripheral Communication (SPI); um conversor digital para analógico de 10 bits, o qual se baseia numa arquitetura de escalonamento binário por carga; um conversor tensão para corrente rail-to-rail e uma ponte H que direciona a corrente pela scaffold, cuja implementação se baseia no uso de portas de transmissão como comutadores. Resultados ao trabalho desenvolvido mostram que o circuito é capaz de estimular a scaffold com correntes entre 0 to 200μA com um erro na corrente de estimulação inferior a 0.75μA. O circuito é capaz ainda de fornecer uma corrente linear, na gama mencionada, a cargas com impedancias até 15k . Para cargas superiores o circuito é capaz de fornecer uma corrente linear, embora em gamas de correntes menores. O circuito implementado usa como tensão de alimentação 5V, tem um consumo médio de potência de 19.5mW e ocupa uma área de 0.19mm2. No decurso do trabalho desenvolvido foi utilizada uma tecnlogoia CMOS de 0.35um. A implementação e resultados foram obtidos com recurso ao software Cadence. En este artículo abordamos la creencia de los apostadores según la cual, cuando el premio mayor de las loterías de cupones se acumula, las ventas tienden a incrementarse, pues habría una motivación mayor para participar en el juego. Si bien los economistas clásicos creen que esto es un comportamiento irracional, por no estratégico, el estudio no descarta la validez de esta creencia; halla dos comportamientos en los apostadores que, en lenguaje de juegos, serían una acción individual y otra colectiva; la primera aleatoria, la segunda colocaría las probabilidades en favor de los apostadores. El estudio se hizo sobre cuarenta sorteos de una lotería en Venezuela en el año 2000 y, aun cuando los datos ya son obsoletos respecto de la contabilidad, no lo son respecto del juego, la creencia de los apostadores pervive con datos actuales. Para contrastar esta creencia contra la evidencia empírica, se usaron técnicas estadísticas corrientes aplicadas al modelo del juego y se calcularon las probabilidades a priori y a posteriori de los sorteos, hallando que, paradójicamente, las probabilidades iniciales, estando en favor de los apostadores, el propio mercado las revierte en su contra obligando a la acción colectiva. In this article, we address the gamblers’ belief according to which, when the coupon lotteries jackpot accumulates, sales tend to increase, as there would be a greater motivation to participate in the game. Although classical economists believe that this is an irrational behavior, for being non-strategic, the study fails to rule out the validity of this belief; it finds two behaviors in gamblers that, in gaming language, would be an individual and a collective action; the first one being random, while the second one would place the odds in favor of the gamblers. The study was performed on forty lottery draws in Venezuela in the year 2000 and, even though the data are already obsolete with respect to accounting, they are not obsolete with respect to gambling, since the gamblers’ belief survives with current data. In order to contrast this belief with the empirical evidence, current statistical techniques applied to the game model were used and the a priori and a posteriori probabilities of the draws were calculated. The findings show that, paradoxically, the initial probabilities are in favor of the gamblers, but the market itself reverses these probabilities against them, thus forcing the collective action. This report is a brief analysis of the most comprehensive survey on conspiracy theories to date, using representative samples of the adult population in nine countries: France, Germany, Great Britain Hungary, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, and the United States of America. It is the first cross-national survey covering, simultaneously, matters related to conspiracy theory beliefs, general levels of trust and news consumption habits, including social media., Report produced for the project, Conspiracy and Democracy based at CRASSH, University of Cambridge. Islamophopia, in particular the conviction that the West is threatened by a process of Islamisation, is at the centre of the current wave of nativist and populist radical-right politics. This paper intends to outline the history of an imaginary present, the idea that “Western Civilization” is undergoing a process of Islamisation by which Muslims are demographically replacing the natives of the European continent with the collaboration of Western elites. The study will unveil the main elements of the narrative and shine a light on the beliefs, actions and goals of the agents and networks who advance it.

Una de las actividades más importantes de los humanos desde la antigüedad es el registro de un tipo actividad, que, para su realización, requiere del conteo de los integrantes de los grupos que se forman; a tales actividades se les llama de modo genérico censos. En consecuencia, existen muchos tipos dependiendo de la actividad. Sin embargo, solemos pensar que los grandes censos nacionales actuales ya se hacían desde la antigüedad, cosa que puede resultar controversial. Este artículo discute algunos puntos al respecto entre los censos del antiguo Egipto y los actuales definiendo un campo común para ambos, pero otro de deslinde, con el fin de enriquecer la discusión. Para ello, reconstruimos aquellos censos dándoles la identidad que merecen; dejándolos de ver como algo pasado, pues siguen sucediéndose actualmente, pero deslindándolos de los grandes censos del presente debido a las rupturas históricas que han permitido su construcción. The first state of the population census) One of the most important activities of humans since antiquity is the recording of a type of activity, which, for its realization, requires the counting of the members of the groups that are formed; such activities are called in a generic manner census. Consequently, there are many types depending on the activity. However, we often think that the current large national censuses have been taking place since antiquity, which can be controversial. This article discusses some points in this regard between the censuses of ancient Egypt and the current ones, defining a common field for both of them, but another boundary, in order to enrich the discussion. In particular, I was puzzled by the mobilisation and emergence of Egyptian contentious actors: how and why collective action evolved in the country from seemingly random and disconnected events and agents? Using Egypt as a case-study and the first decade of the twenty-first century as time frame, I set to solve this puzzle and find an answer to the leading research question: Does the emergence of Collective Action Networks in Egypt explain the increasing levels of contention and, ultimately, the 25 January uprising? This question focuses on the topic that gives title to the thesis, which is the relation between the hypothetical emergence of CANs and 1) a phase of heightened contention from 2000 to 2011 and 2) the revolutionary situation of 25 January, 2011. It also provides the basis to assess the manifestation of the two other relational patterns that appear in the subtitle of the thesis, namely dynamic protest waves and mobilisation spirals. In addressing the research question, I mixed quantitative and qualitative methods, combining protest event data collection and analysis, social network analysis with interviews. This allowed me to test if, how and why Collective Action Networks emerged and whether the revolutionary situation of 25 January 2011 was an unexpected spontaneous uprising or the natural outcome of a decade of sustained mobilisation. The main finding of this thesis is that, indeed, the intensification of contentious action in Egypt, between 2000 and 2011, was the product an emergent and increasingly complex Collective Action Network that stirred up protest waves and mobilisation spirals thus determining the Egyptian 25 January revolution.

Diante dela, o refugiado não escapa, nas cidades por onde passa, dos desafios de construir sua identidade em trânsito. Transpondo os limites de sua identidade nacional, o asilado busca exerce seu direito à cidadania calcificado no direito humano à proteção. O Brasil tem sido vanguardista nesta proteção e na abertura de suas fronteiras para novos refugiados, embora ainda esteja amadurecendo o direito destes à cidadania. This paper strives to shed light on the identity processes by which refugee figure crosses in contemporary societies. Forced displacement has his record that dates back to antiquity. However, the strengthening of the refuge of the institute is the situation that happens the world wars, its golden period. The organization of a new international order enters the contemporary states in the wake of actors who need to prioritize the humanitarian protection before violations and persecutions of all kinds. We will study the phenomena operated in the midst of globalization, where the borders open more for goods and services and stoked for people. Before her, the refugee does not escape in the towns through which it passes, the challenges of building their identity in transit. Transposing the limits of their national identity, the asylee search exercises his right to citizenship in calcified human right to protection. Brazil has been avant-garde in this protection and opening its borders to new refugees, although it is still maturing their right to citizenship. This object is pursued in this article. The refugee identity politics and its development in the consolidation of human rights.

Dissertação para obtenção do Grau de Mestre em Engenharia Civil Actualmente a energia desempenha um papel preponderante no bem-estar económico e social. Porém, os seus custos cada vez mais elevados e a debilidade no seu abastecimento motivaram a implementação de políticas com vista a redução do consumo energético em vários sectores. O sector residencial representa 17% do consumo de energia final do país, dos quais cerca de 25% são alusivos à utilização de equipamentos de climatização. Uma das políticas para a redução do consumo de energia é a reabilitação térmica de edifícios com baixa eficiência energética. Em Portugal Continental, 65% do edificado é anterior à primeira regulamentação térmica, pelo que estes edifícios apresentam baixos níveis de conforto térmico e elevados consumos energéticos. A aplicação de sistemas solares passivos neste tipo de edifícios é bastante apelativa, uma vez que estes sistemas contribuem para o aquecimento e arrefecimento natural. Este estudo apresenta o desempenho energético da aplicação de um sistema solar passivo de ganho isolado, o solário, aplicado a uma fracção autónoma de um edifício multifamiliar em várias cidades com climas distintos. Esta análise foi realizada recorrendo a duas ferramentas de análise do comportamento térmico de edifícios em regime dinâmico, EnergyPlus e TRNSYS, que permitem um estudo rigoroso do comportamento térmico dos edifícios. Os resultados obtidos na sequência das análises realizadas indicam que a aplicação do sistema solar passivo do tipo solário está associado a um aumento da eficiência energética da habitação em análise, assim como pode superar o desempenho térmico do sistema ETICS, que é habitualmente aplicado em obras de reabilitação.

Mestrado em Engenharia Mecânica A actividade de aquicultura engloba, em terra, uma série de piscinas, onde se desenvolvem as espécies de peixe. Essas piscinas dividem-se em duas partes; umas de menor dimensão e com condições ambientais específicas que recebem os peixes pequenos para pré-engorda; outras de maior dimensão para engorda. Para proporcionar o ambiente adequado a esse desenvolvimento dos peixes existem antes de chegar às piscinas, canais e sistemas de bombagem, filtração e oxigenação, uma vez que toda a água é puxada do mar. Posteriormente, a água entra nos canais terrestres por acção de bombagem, atravessa uma zona de filtragem de algas e seguidamente um tanque de oxigenação onde é purificada a água, de forma a manter os teores de oxigénio necessários para que haja uma vida natural dos peixes em terra. O presente trabalho propõe-se divulgar o processo de oxigenação da água salgada. Envolve todo o estudo, viabilidades, cálculos e aplicação em obra de tubagens, venturis, bombagem referentes à oxigenação da água salgada a entrar nas piscinas de aquicultura. ABSTRACT: The aquaculture activity includes, in land, a series of pools, where they grow the species of fish. These pools are divided into two parts, the smaller ones with specific environmental conditions that receive the small fish to nurseries, and the others larger for fattening. To provide the appropriate environment for such development of the fish there before coming to the pools, canals and pumping systems, filtration and oxygenation, since all the water is pulled from the sea. Subsequently, the water enters the terrestrial channels by pumping action, crosses a algae filter and then a oxygen tank where it is purified water, thereby maintaining the levels of oxygen needed to there is a natural life of the fish ashore. This paper proposes to disclose the process of oxygenation of seawater. It involves the entire study, feasibility, calculations, and on-site application of tubes, venturis, pumping related to oxygenation of salted water to enter the pools of aquaculture.

O trabalho aborda a problemática do encerramento empresarial da sociedade limitada e da Empresa Individual de Responsabilidade Limitada (EIRELI) nos casos em que se encontram presentes obrigações tributárias impagáveis em decorrência da ausência de ativos suficientes para tanto, de maneira a dar efetividade às restrições de responsabilidade patrimonial contidas nas normas societárias que tratam do assunto. A caracterização, a extensão e os limites da responsabilidade dos administradores (ou sua ausência) por obrigações tributárias encontra-se analisada em torno de quatro casos hipotéticos de encerramento empresarial, que, inspirados em situações reais, foram criados de modo a facilitar o acesso aos problemas, apresentando-se como recurso metodológico para o pensamento sobre o tema. No primeiro caso, encontra-se a situação em que a sociedade limitada encerrou as suas atividades sem nenhuma formalidade, situação em que se inclui a variável da saída regular de um sócio administrador durante o funcionamento da empresa. No segundo caso, a sociedade realizou a dissolução, a liquidação e a extinção, com os respectivos arquivamentos na Junta Comercial. No terceiro caso, a sociedade limitada optou pela autofalência. No último caso, a sociedade realizou o encerramento empresarial, mas transferiu ativos de maneira a dar continuidade a suas atividades por meio de outra empresa. Em nenhuma delas os tributos foram satisfeitos. Para a apresentação de ações práticas aos sócios e administradores que pretendam evitar o risco de responsabilidade pessoal por obrigações devidas pela sociedade, foram analisados temas correlatos aos casos hipotéticos relacionados ao procedimento de encerramento empresarial previsto no Código Civil, bem como as repercussões da Lei Complementar 147/2014, que menciona a responsabilidade solidária dos sócios em consequência de baixa, falência ou responsabilidade tributária de administradores, e, por fim, a responsabilidade patrimonial decorrente de desconsideração da personalidade jurídica. The paper adresses the problematic of corporate closure of limited company and individual limited liability company (EIRELI), when there are unpayable tax obligations on account of the lack of sufficient assets to pay them, in order to give effectiveness to the financial liability cointaned in the corporate law that deal with the subject. The characterization, extension and limits of the managers liability (or its absence) for tax obligations is analyzed through four (4) hypothetical cases of business closure, inspired by real situations, that were designed to facilitate access to problems, presenting itself as methodological resource for the thought on the subject. In the first case, a situation in which the limited company ceased its activities without any formality, including, in this situation, the variable of the regular exit of a managing partner while it was operating. In the second case, the company followed through with the dissolution, liquidation and extinction, doing the proper filings with the Commercial Board. In the third case, the company chose the self-bankruptcy. And in the last case the company did the closure, but transferred assets in order to continue the activities through another company. In all of them the taxes weren't paid off. For the presentation of practical actions to the partners and administrators intending to avoid the risk of personal liability for obligations due by the company, it was also analyzed some topics related to the hypothetical cases pertaining to the business closure procedure provided for in the Civil Code, bankruptcy, with emphasis on the situation in which only taxes obligations are due, tax liability of managers and partners, including the joint liability established on Complementary Law 147/2014, and, at last, disregard of legal personality.

Esta dissertação tem por objetivo avaliar se o STJ vem aplicando corretamente o art. 133 do CTN e se as suas decisões trazem segurança jurídica ao contribuinte interessado em realizar negócios envolvendo o estabelecimento e/ou fundo de comércio. Para tanto, realizou-se detalhado estudo da jurisprudência deste Tribunal a partir da análise crítica deste dispositivo em oitenta e dois acórdãos. Como existem diversas dúvidas ainda não respondidas, a decisão de analisar a jurisprudência do STJ visou averiguar a existência de tendências ou de critérios utilizados por este Tribunal para a correta definição dos limites e das situações que efetivamente transferem a responsabilidade tributária ao adquirente de estabelecimento e/ou fundo de comércio. Adicionalmente, apresenta-se uma alternativa de arranjo societário mais eficiente do ponto de vista operacional e fiscal envolvendo negócios com estabelecimentos, a partir da estrutura de drop down. This ‘thesis’ objective is to evaluate if the Superior Court of Justice (STJ) has been applying correctly the article 133 of the National Tax Code (CTN) and if their decisions are able to provide legal certainty to taxpayers that are interested in performing transactions involving an establishment or the goodwill. For this purpose, a detailed study of the Court’s jurisprudence was executed by performing a critical analysis of this legal provision in eighty two decisions. As several unanswered doubts exist, the decision of analyzing STJ’s jurisprudence intended to determine the existence of trends or criteria utilized by the Court to correctly define the limits and situations that effectively transfer the tax liability to the acquirer of the establishment or the goodwill. Additionally, an option of corporate structure is presented to enable the most effective way from and operational and tax standpoint to perform transactions involving establishments, based on a drop down structure.
