Understanding forest water limitation during droughts within a warming climate is essential for accurate predictions of forest-climate interactions. In hyperdiverse ecosystems like the Amazon forest, the mechanisms shaping hysteresis patterns in transpiration relative to environmental factors are not well understood. From this perspective, we investigated these dynamics by conducting in situ leaf-level measurements throughout and after the 2015 El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) drought. Our findings indicate a substantial increase in the hysteresis area (Harea) among transpiration (E), vapor pressure deficit (VPD), and stomatal conductance (gs) at canopy level during the ENSO peak, attributed to both temporal lag and differences in magnitude between gs and VPD peaks. Specifically, the canopy species Pouteria anomala exhibited an increased Harea, due to earlier maximum gs rates leading to a greater temporal lag with VPD compared to the post-drought period. Additionally, leaf water potential (ΨL) and canopy temperature (Tcanopy) showed larger Harea during the ENSO peak compared to post-drought conditions across all studied species, suggesting that stomatal closure, particularly during the afternoon, acts to minimize water loss and may explain the counterclockwise hysteresis observed between ΨL and Tcanopy. The pronounced Harea during the drought points to a potential imbalance between water supply and demand, underlining the role of stomatal behavior of isohydric species in response to drought.

• VPD and R g predominantly drive variations in tree-level transpiration. • Soil moisture availability did not limit tree-level transpiration. • Xylem sap flow exhibited a strong correlation with VPD, R g , and RH. • Significant correlation (P < 0.001) was observed between actual and potential transpiration. • Apple tree water usage was higher in the early season compared to mid- and late seasons. Understanding the environmental drivers and hydraulic dynamics of plants is pivotal for elucidating future water use strategies and refining precise irrigation techniques. In our investigation, we focused on the daily and seasonal fluctuations in sap flow (SF) using compensation heat-pulse techniques on 7-year-old 'Gamhong' apple trees. Predictions of stand transpiration were integrated using the Penman-Monteith grass reference evapotranspiration. Additionally, we measured leaf-level diurnal and seasonal stomatal conductance (g s), leaf water potential (Ψ Leaf), and transpiration rate (E) to explore the relationship between plant-level transpiration and orchard microclimate. Diurnal SF exhibited a pattern similar to global radiation (R g) and vapor pressure deficit (VPD), increasing in the morning with a peak in the afternoon and decreasing towards evening. Seasonal water use varied, with rates of 10.62 ± 0.282 L day-1 in early (May–June), 8.40 ± 0.222 L day-1 in mid- (July–August), and 5.96 ± 0.154 L day-1 in late season (September–October). Plant water consumption was influenced by weather conditions and evaporative demand driven by atmospheric VPD and R g. Clear and sunny days resulted in higher water use (10.23 ± 0.291 L day-1) compared to partially sunny but windy days (9.85 ± 0.32 L day-1) and cloudy/rainy days (5.37 ± 0.176 L day-1). Plant transpiration strongly correlated with VPD (R² = 0.565), R g (R² = 0.616), relative humidity (R ² = 0.623), and wind velocity (u, R ² = 0.684), while no significant correlation was observed with air temperature (T a , R ² = 0.19) or soil moisture status (Ψ soil , R² = 0.19). VPD and R g emerged as the primary drivers, with Ψ soil playing a minor role and not limiting tree-level transpiration. Leaf-level g s , Ψ Leaf , and E displayed similar diurnal trends. In our study, the integrated daily sap flow provided valuable insights into plant-water relations differently across growing seasons and its relationship with reference evapotranspiration (E o). The Penman–Monteith equation, using grass reference evapotranspiration indicated a positive correlation (R ² = 0.764, P < 0.001) between actual and estimated transpiration. However, the slope of the relationship differed significantly from 1.0, suggesting that E o per unit leaf area of grass corresponds to E 288 = E o /2.88 (L m-2 of leaf area d-1), which underestimated evapotranspiration. Climate change is raising concerns about how forests will respond to extreme droughts, heat waves and their co-occurrence. In this greenhouse study, we tested how carbon and water relations relate to seedling growth and mortality of northeastern US trees during and after extreme drought, warming, and combined drought and warming. We compared the response of our focal species red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) with a common associate (paper birch, Betula papyrifera Marsh.) and a species expected to increase abundance in this region with climate change (northern red oak, Quercus rubra L.). We tracked growth and mortality, photosynthesis and water use of 216 seedlings of these species through a treatment and a recovery year. Each red spruce seedling was planted in containers either alone or with another seedling to simulate potential competition, and the seedlings were exposed to combinations of drought (irrigated, 15-d 'short' or 30-d 'long') and temperature (ambient or 16 days at +3.5 °C daily maximum) treatments. We found dominant effects of the drought reducing photosynthesis, midday water potential, and growth of spruce and birch, but that oak showed considerable resistance to drought stress. The effects of planting seedlings together were moderate and likely due to competition for limited water. Despite high temperatures reducing photosynthesis for all species, the warming imposed in this study minorly impacted growth only for oak in the recovery year. Overall, we found that the diverse water-use strategies employed by the species in our study related to their growth and recovery following drought stress. This study provides physiological evidence to support the prediction that native species to this region like red spruce and paper birch are susceptible to future climate extremes that may favor other species like northern red oak, leading to potential impacts on tree community dynamics under climate change. Drought poses a serious threat to the productivity of hop, an important perennial crop. However, the precise physiological mechanisms that make it highly susceptible to drought are not yet fully understood. In this study, we investigated stomatal regulation and xylem vulnerability to embolism, which are important traits closely associated with plant drought resistance. In a glasshouse cultivation experiment, we monitored changes in leaf water potential, stem elongation rates, and leaf gas exchange, including net photosynthetic rates, stomatal conductance, and intrinsic water use efficiency, on relatively young hop plants (traditional Saaz - Osvald's clone 31) exposed to declining soil water availability. The transpiration rate and stem elongation of plants decreased significantly with a small decline in substrate water potential (ΨSUB), indicating a highly sensitive stomata response during early phases of soil dehydration. The stem elongation was completely halted, and the transpiration rate dropped to less than 50% of its maximum at ΨSUB levels below − 0.8 MPa. In well-watered hop plants, xylem in stems operates near the initial point of embolization and is highly vulnerable to embolism, with a water potential corresponding to a 50% loss of xylem conductivity at -1.6 MPa. The sensitive stomatal response to declining ΨSUB likely helps to mitigate the risk of hydraulic failure, albeit at the cost of impaired growth. Scheduled irrigation, particularly during the sensitive stem elongation stage, may be a promising approach to mitigate the detrimental effects of reduced soil water availability on hop growth and yield while also conserving water resources. 【Background】 Wheat is the second largest cereal crop after rice in China and is largely grown in arid and semiarid regions in the North. Understanding the impact of water stress on its growth and final yield is important to improve its water use efficiency and safeguard wheat production. We studied this in a field experiment. 【Method】 The experiment was conducted at Wuwei of Gansu province, using the varieties Longchun 41 and Yongliang No.4 as the model plants. This paper aimed to elucidate how water stress imposed in the jointing and grain-filling stages influence growth, physiology and yields of the crops. The control was sufficient irrigation (CK). There were four deficit irrigation treatments: irrigating 65% of water in the CK during both jointing and grain-filling stages (W1), 80% during the joint stage and 65% during the grouting stage (W2), 65% during the jointing stage and 80% during the grain-filling stage (W3), 80% during both jointing and grain-filling stages (W4). In each treatment, we measured growth indexes, grain yield, leaf photosynthetic traits and chlorophyll fluorescence kinetic traits. 【Result】 Water stress during the jointing and grain-filling stages significantly reduced plant height, leaf area index, dry matter accumulation, net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, and photosynthetic electron transport rate. Sufficient irrigation during the tasseling stage can restore the leaf area index (LAI) of the Longchun 41 variety, positively influencing SPAD values, photosynthetic electron transfer, and transpiration. Increasing water deficit led to a reduction in grain yield. On average, the yield of Longchun No.41 was higher than that of Yongliang No.4. The yield of Longchun No.41 in W4 was not significantly different from that in CK. 【Conclusion】 Considering water saving and grain yield, the optimal irrigation and cultivation for spring wheat in the studied region is to grow the Longchun No.41 variety and irrigate 80% of water used in sufficient irrigation during both the jointing and grain-filling stages.

Background. Salt stress reduces water supply and causes ionic imbalance in the plant, eventually leading to a decrease in plant growth, functional activity, and productivity. Variable salinity levels in the field make it difficult to select salt-tolerant cultivars, so a need for other testing methods arises. Materials and methods. The plant material consisted of two own-rooted Vitis vinifera (L.) genotypes: cv. ‘Asma’, and hybrid M. No. 8-08-8-4 (‘Kok Pandas’ × ‘Zeibel 6357’). Salt stress was simulated by treating with NaCl at 0, 50, 80, 100, and 120 mM concentrations. Water status was measured by the leaf water potential (Ψ) using a pressure chamber. Changes in the leaf areaand total root length were assessed in vitro. Results. Salt stress affected growth characteristics and yield structure of both own-rooted vines, but hybrid M. No. 8-08-8-4 was more sensitive. The hybrid showed greater yield reduction (38.6 %) than cv. ‘Asma’ (28.4 %), while the mass concentration of sugars was higher in ‘Asma’. The greatest differences in the predawn leaf water potential were observed for ‘Asma’ and M. No. 8-08-8-4 on the 45th day of irrigation with water containing different NaCl concentrations. The root length of the more salt-tolerant cultivar reduced in vitro to a greater extent. Conclusion. The functional abilities of a cultivar depend on the level of salinization and the genotype. Cv. ‘Asma’ demonstrated higher salt tolerance compared to hybrid M. No. 8-08-8-4. Leaf water potentials characterizing the water status of plants were measured. The responses to salinization were the same in the vines grown in vivo and in vitro, so it is possible to perform testing for salt tolerance in vitro.

The development of water-saving management relies on understanding the physiological response of crops to soil drought. The coordinated regulation of hydraulics and stomatal conductance in plant water relations has steadily received attention. However, research focusing on grain crops, such as winter wheat, remains limited. In this study, three soil water supply treatments, including high (H), moderate (M), and low (L) soil water contents, were conducted with potted winter wheat. Leaf water potential (Ψleaf), leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf), and stomatal conductance (gs), as well as leaf biochemical parameters and stomatal traits were measured. Results showed that, compared to H, predawn leaf water potential (ΨPD) significantly reduced by 48.10% and 47.91%, midday leaf water potential (ΨMD) reduced by 40.71% and 43.20%, Kleaf reduced by 64.80% and 65.61%, and gs reduced by 21.20% and 43.41%, respectively, under M and L conditions. Although gs showed a significant difference between M and L, Ψleaf and Kleaf did not show significant differences between these treatments. The maximum carboxylation rate (Vcmax) and maximum electron transfer rate (Jmax) under L significantly decreased by 23.11% and 28.10%, stomatal density (SD) and stomatal pore area index (SPI) under L on the abaxial side increased by 59.80% and 52.30%, respectively, compared to H. The leaf water potential at 50% hydraulic conduction loss (P50) under L was not significantly reduced. The gs was positively correlated with ΨMD and Kleaf, but it was negatively correlated with abscisic acid (ABA) and SD. A threshold relationship between gs and Kleaf was observed, with rapid and linear reduction in gs occurring only when Kleaf fell below 8.70 mmol m−2 s−1 MPa−1. Our findings demonstrate that wheat leaves adapt stomatal regulation strategies from anisohydric to isohydric in response to reduced soil water content. These results enrich the theory of trade-offs between the carbon assimilation and hydraulic safety in crops and also provide a theoretical basis for water management practices based on stomatal regulation strategies under varying soil water conditions. The globally increasing frequency of extreme drought events exacerbates the contradiction between the supply of water and the demand for high-quality urban greening. However, the mechanism of the response of urban shrubs to drought stress remains unclear. In this study, three typical urban shrubs (Euonymus japonicus, golden vicary [Ligustrum × vicaryi], and Japanese purple barberry [Berberis thunbergii var. atropurpurea]) that are used for greening in northern China were exposed to three levels of water (full irrigation, natural rain-fed, and extreme drought) in different periods of the growing season (April to May, June to July, and August to September) to investigate the responses of leaf water potential and photosynthetic parameters. The main results were as follows: (1) all the leaf water potentials (Ψ) and photosynthetic parameters (Pn) showed a typical linear relationship along the water gradient in the middle of the growing season. Extreme drought decreased the photosynthetic rates by 1.26~11.03 μmol·m−2·s−1 compared with the irrigated groups. However, the responses were less pronounced in the early and late growing seasons. (2) Different shrubs responded with different intensities and mechanisms. B. thunbergii var. atropurpurea showed clear anisohydric behavior throughout the whole growing season, while L. × vicaryi and E. japonicus showed stronger isohydric behavior during the early and late growing seasons. Increases in hydrological extremes, including drought, are expected for Amazon forests. A fundamental challenge for predicting forest responses lies in identifying ecological strategies which underlie such responses. Characterization of species-specific hydraulic strategies for regulating water-use, thought to be arrayed along an 'isohydric–anisohydric' spectrum, is a widely used approach. However, recent studies have questioned the usefulness of this classification scheme, because its metrics are strongly influenced by environments, and hence can lead to divergent classifications even within the same species. Here, we propose an alternative approach positing that individual hydraulic regulation strategies emerge from the interaction of environments with traits. Specifically, we hypothesize that the vertical forest profile represents a key gradient in drought-related environments (atmospheric vapor pressure deficit, soil water availability) that drives divergent tree water-use strategies for coordinated regulation of stomatal conductance (gs) and leaf water potentials (ΨL) with tree rooting depth, a proxy for water availability. Testing this hypothesis in a seasonal eastern Amazon forest in Brazil, we found that hydraulic strategies indeed depend on height-associated environments. Upper canopy trees, experiencing high vapor pressure deficit (VPD), but stable soil water access through deep rooting, exhibited isohydric strategies, defined by little seasonal change in the diurnal pattern of gs and steady seasonal minimum ΨL. In contrast, understory trees, exposed to less variable VPD but highly variable soil water availability, exhibited anisohydric strategies, with fluctuations in diurnal gs that increased in the dry season along with increasing variation in ΨL. Our finding that canopy height structures the coordination between drought-related environmental stressors and hydraulic traits provides a basis for preserving the applicability of the isohydric-to-anisohydric spectrum, which we show here may consistently emerge from environmental context. Our work highlights the importance of understanding how environmental heterogeneity structures forest responses to climate change, providing a mechanistic basis for improving models of tropical ecosystems. Plant traits are often measured in the field or laboratory to characterize stress responses. However, direct measurements are not always cost effective for broader sampling efforts, whereas indirect approaches such as reflectance spectroscopy could offer efficient and scalable alternatives. Here, we used field spectroscopy to assess whether (1) existing vegetation indices could predict leaf trait responses to heat stress, or if (2) partial least squares regression (PLSR) spectral models could quantify these trait responses. On several warm, sunny days, we measured leaf trait responses indicative of photosynthetic mechanisms, plant water status, and morphology, including electron transport rate (ETR), photochemical quenching (qP), leaf water potential (Ψleaf), and specific leaf area (SLA) in 51 urban trees from nine species. Concurrent measures of hyperspectral leaf reflectance from the same individuals were used to calculate vegetation indices for correlation with trait responses. We found that vegetation indices predicted only SLA robustly (R2 = 0.55), while PLSR predicted all leaf trait responses of interest with modest success (R2 = 0.36 to 0.58). Using spectral band subsets corresponding to commercially available drone-mounted hyperspectral cameras, as well as those selected for use in common multispectral satellite missions, we were able to estimate ETR, qP, and SLA with reasonable accuracy, highlighting the potential for large-scale prediction of these parameters. Overall, reflectance spectroscopy and PLSR can identify wavelengths and wavelength ranges that are important for remote sensing-based modeling of important functional trait responses of trees to heat stress over broad ranges. Aims: Although soil water deficit is the primary constraint on transpiration globally, the mechanisms by which soil drying and soil properties impact transpiration and stomatal regulation remain elusive. This work aimed to investigate how soil textures and vapor pressure deficit (VPD) impact the relationship between transpiration rate, canopy conductance, and leaf water potential of maize (Zea mays L.) during soil drying. We hypothesize that the decrease in soil–plant hydraulic conductance (Ksp) triggers stomatal closure and the latter is soil specific. Methods: Plants were grown in two contrasting soil textures (sand and loam) and exposed to two consecutive VPD levels (1.8 and 2.8 kPa). We measured transpiration rate, canopy conductance, soil and leaf water potentials during soil drying. Results: Transpiration rate decreased at higher soil matric potential in sand than in loam at both VPD levels. In sand, high VPD generated a steeper drop in canopy conductance with decreasing leaf water potential. The decrease in canopy conductance was well correlated with the drop in Ksp, which was significantly affected by soil texture. Conclusions: Our results demonstrated that variations in canopy conductance were not simply a function of leaf water potential but largely affected by soil hydraulics. These results reinforce a model of stomatal closure driven by a loss in soil hydraulic conductivity. Further studies will determine if soil-specific stomatal regulation exists among species. Rice production is severely threatened by drought stress. To develop drought-tolerant varieties, the selection of donors for the breeding programme is crucial. Twenty-one rice genotypes were evaluated at the vegetative and reproductive stages under drought. Higher relative water content (> 65%) and leaf water potential (> − 3.50 MPa) in Danteshwari, Mahamaya, Samleshwari, Poornima, IBD-1, Safri 17, Sahabhagidhan, Vandana and N22 explained their drought tolerance with higher biomass production, lower drought score and early stress recovery rate of 1 and 3 under vegetative stage drought. At the reproductive stage drought, higher grain yield and less relative yield reduction was found in Mahamaya (2.42 t/ha, 46.37%), Samleshwari (2.05 t/ha, 42.88%), Poornima (1.86 t/ha, 42.67%), Sahabhagidhan (2 t/ha, 57.72%) and Danteshwari (2 t/ha, 39.11%), showed higher tolerance due to greater leaf water potential and biomass with a lower reduction in grain filling percentage due to more remobilization of assimilates to the grains. Though, N22 and Anjali flowered 5–7 days earlier in drought stress compared to well-watered condition, partially responsible for increased grain filling under drought. Therefore, visual selection for a large sink size under favorable conditions and higher biomass accumulation under vegetative drought stress with greater fertility under reproduction stage is favorable for maintaining higher grain yield in rice. Further, higher expression of OsAP37, EDT1, OsLEA3-1, OsDIL, OsDRAP1, OsNAC14, OsNAR2.1, OsWRKY30 and OsRab7 in Mahamaya, Samleshwari, Poornima, Sahabhagidhan, and Danteshwari supported the higher grain yield under drought stress. Key message: Norway spruce operates with larger hydraulic safety margins (HSM) than beech and Douglas-fir despite the known drought sensitivity of spruce, questioning a pivotal role of HSM in drought tolerance. The exceptional 2018/2019 drought exposed Central Europe's forests to severe stress, highlighting the need to better understand stomatal regulation strategies and their relationship to xylem safety under extreme drought. We studied diurnal, seasonal, and inter-annual variation in stomatal conductance (gs) and leaf water potential (ΨLeaf) in co-occurring European beech (F. sylvatica), Norway spruce (P. abies), and Douglas-fir (P. menziesii) trees in the two summers and related them to hydraulic traits characterizing drought resistance. In 2018, F. sylvatica exhibited a continuous ΨLeaf decline from June to September, as is characteristic for an anisohydric strategy, while P. abies closed stomata early and reached the least negative ΨLeaf-values at the end of summer. P. menziesii showed low ΨLeaf-values close to P12 (the xylem pressure at onset of embolism) already in July. Both conifers closed stomata when approaching P12 and maintained low gs-levels throughout summer, indicative for isohydric regulation. In 2019, all three species showed a linear decline in ΨLeaf, but F. sylvatica crossed P12 in contrast to the conifers. The three species exhibited similar water potentials at turgor loss point (− 2.44 to − 2.51 MPa) and branch P50 (xylem pressure at 50% loss of hydraulic conductance; − 3.3 to − 3.8 MPa). Yet, F. sylvatica and P. menziesii operated with smaller hydraulic safety margins (HSM means: 0.79 and 0.77 MPa) than P. abies (1.28 MPa). F. sylvatica reduced leaf size and specific leaf area in 2019 and increased Huber value. Our species comparison during extreme drought contradicts the general assumption that conifers operate with larger HSMs than angiosperm trees. Urbanization causes changes in near-surface meteorology and rainfall-runoff relationships that threaten to place hydraulic stress on vegetation. The goal of this study was to investigate the differences in riparian zone tree hydration state, as indicated by leaf water potential, between an urban and a rural stream site, and to understand how the trees respond differently to precipitation events. At the rural stream site, the streambed was dry due to persistent drought conditions, whereas the urban stream site had established flow due to urban water inputs. The trees at the urban site were found to suffer less hydraulic stress than the trees at the rural site, as indicated by predawn leaf water potential measurements. Additionally, trees at the rural site were found to regulate stomatal openness to reduce transpiration on the day before rain, but not after, due to the presence of near-surface moisture introduced by the rain event. Trees at the urban site did not have to regulate stomatal openness before or after the rain, as the established flow in the stream provided consistent water access. These findings support the viability of protecting and preserving riparian ecosystems in urban settings.

Abstract This study investigates how amorphous silica (ASi) influences soil–plant–water interactions in distinct soil textures. A sandy loam and silty clay soil were mixed with 0 and 2% ASi, and their impact on soil retention and soil hydraulic conductivity curves were determined. In parallel, tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum L.) were grown in experimental pots under controlled conditions. When plants were established, the soil was saturated, and a controlled drying cycle ensued until plants reached their wilting points. Soil water content, soil water potential, plant transpiration rate, and leaf water potential were monitored during this process. Results indicate a positive impact of ASi on the sandy loam soil, enhancing soil water content at field capacity (FC, factor of 1.3 times) and at permanent wilting point (PWP, a factor of 3.5 times), while its effect in silty clay loam was negligible (

Agriculture is confronted with the challenge of ensuring global food security, yet the rapid expansion of salinity stress undoubtedly restricts plant productivity in cultivable areas, posing a significant threat to crop yields. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMFs) have emerged as a biological tool for enhancing plant salt stress tolerance. To utilize this biological tool, this study evaluated the response in growth and physiological parameters of tolerant (Karaisali) and sensitive (Demre) pepper genotypes. The experiment involved mycorrhizal-treated (Glomus clarium) and non-mycorrhizal (control) plants of both the tolerant and sensitive pepper genotypes. The plants were subjected to two salt doses: 75 and 150 mM. The plant growth and physiological parameters were measured at 40 days after transplanting. The mycorrhizal activity was found to be significantly more effective in the sensitive genotype. We found notable differences in mycorrhizal activity between the pepper genotypes under salt stress conditions, with the sensitive genotype "Demre" showing greater responsiveness to mycorrhizal association compared with the "Karaisali" variety. Under both moderate (75 mM NaCl) and higher salt stress levels (150 mM NaCl), both the "Karaisali" and "Demre" varieties exhibited substantial increases in their shoot dry weights. However, these increases were consistently higher in the "Demre" plants. Moreover, the AMFs demonstrated significant enhancements in photosynthesis rates under both moderate and high salinity levels in both genotypes. Overall, our findings suggest that AMFs play a crucial role in improving plant growth, water status, and photosynthesis characteristics, particularly in salt-sensitive pepper genotypes, under moderate-to-high salinity levels. In conclusion, the plant growth, water status, and photosynthesis characteristics of the salt-sensitive pepper genotype were significantly improved by AMFs at medium and high salinity levels, such as 75 mM and 150 mM NaCl, respectively. Summary: Stomatal closure under high VPDL (leaf to air vapour pressure deficit) is a primary means by which plants prevent large excursions in transpiration rate and leaf water potential (Ψleaf) that could lead to tissue damage. Yet, the drivers of this response remain controversial. Changes in Ψleaf appear to drive stomatal VPDL response, but many argue that dynamic changes in soil‐to‐leaf hydraulic conductance (Ks‐l) make an important contribution to this response pathway, even in well‐hydrated soils.Here, we examined whether the regulation of whole plant stomatal conductance (gc) in response to typical changes in daytime VPDL is influenced by dynamic changes in Ks‐l. We use well‐watered plants of two species with contrasting ecological and physiological features: the herbaceous Arabidopsis thaliana (ecotype Columbia‐0) and the dry forest conifer Callitris rhomboidea.The dynamics of Ks‐l and gc were continuously monitored by combining concurrent in situ measurements of Ψleaf using an open optical dendrometer and whole plant transpiration using a balance. Large changes in VPDL were imposed to induce stomatal closure and observe the impact on Ks‐l.In both species, gc was observed to decline substantially as VPDL increased, while Ks‐l remained stable. Our finding suggests that stomatal regulation of transpiration is not contingent on a decrease in Ks‐l. Static Ks‐l provides a much simpler explanation for transpiration control in hydrated plants and enables simplified modelling and new methods for monitoring plant water use in the field. Irrigation decision support systems evolving in the domestic temperate tree fruit production industry incorporate measures of soil moisture status, which diverges from classic physiological indicators of edaphic stress. This study used an autonomous sensor-based irrigation system to impose a water deficit (soil matric potential targets of –25, –40, –60, and –80 kPa) on ‘Autumn Gala’, ‘CrimsonCrisp’, and ‘Golden Delicious’ apple (Malus domestica) cultivars grafted to ‘Budagovsky 9’ rootstock in the greenhouse (n 5 60). It was hypothesized that relationships between physiological plant function, assessed via infrared gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence, and the soil matric potential may be used to advance emerging irrigation decision support systems. Complications arising from defoliation by day 11 at –60 and –80 kPa indicate the generation of substrate-specific soil–water relationships in research applications of autonomous sensor-based irrigation systems. ‘Autumn Gala’ carbon assimilation rates at –80 kPa declined from day 0 to day 8 (9.93 and 5.86 lmolμm–2 μs –1 carbon dioxide), whereas the transpiration rate was maintained, potentially reducing observed defoliation as other cultivars increased transpiration to maintain carbon assimilation. Correlation matrices revealed Pearson’s r ≤ |0.43| for all physiological metrics considered with soil matric potential. Nevertheless, exploratory regression analysis on predawn leaf water potential, carbon assimilation, transpiration, stomatal conductance, and nonphotochemical quenching exposed speculatively useful data and data shapes that warrant additional study. Nonlinear piecewise regression suggested soil matric potential may useful as a predictor for the rate of change in predawn leaf water potential upon exposure to a water deficit. The scarcity of water resources affects tomato production. Deficit irrigation may optimize water management with only a low reduction in yield. Deficit irrigation scheduling based on applied water presented no clear conclusions. Water stress management based on plant water status, such as water potential, could improve the scheduling. The aim of this work was to evaluate the physiological and yield responses of different tomato cultivars to deficit irrigation. Three experiments were carried out in 2020 and 2022 at the University of Seville (Spain). "Cherry" and "chocolate Marmande" cultivars with an indeterminate growth pattern were grown in a greenhouse. Treatments were: Control (full irrigated) and Deficit. Deficit plants were irrigated based on water potential measurements. Moderate water stress did not significantly reduce the yield, although it affected other processes. Fruit size and total soluble solids were the most sensitive parameters to water stress. The latter increased only when persistent water stress was applied. However, truss development and fruit number were not affected by the level of water stress imposed. Such results suggest that moderate water stress, even in sensitive phenological stages such as flowering, would not reduce yield. Frequent monitoring of crop moisture levels can significantly improve crop production efficiency and optimise water resource utilisation. The aim of the present study was to generate moisture status maps using thermal infrared imagery, centring on the development of a predictive model for the cotton leaf water potential. The model was constructed using particle swarm optimisation (PSO) in conjunction with the least squares support vector machine (LS-SVM). Traditional SVM models suffer from high computational complexity, long training times, and inequality constraints in predicting leaf water potential. To address such issues, the PSO algorithm was introduced to improve the performance of the LS-SVM model. The PSO-optimised LS-SVM model exhibited notable improvements in performance when evaluated on two distinct test datasets (Alaer and Tumushuke). The research results indicate that the predictive accuracy of the PSO-LS-SVM model significantly improved, as evidenced by an increase of 0.05 and 0.04 in the R 2 values, both of which reached 0.95. This improvement is reflected in the corresponding RMSE values, which were reduced to 0.100 and 0.103. Furthermore, a model was established based on data from three cotton growth stages, achieving high predictive accuracy even with fewer training samples. By using the PSO-LS-SVM model to predict leaf water potential information, the predicted data were mapped onto drone images, enabling the transformation of the leaf water potential from a point to an area. The present findings contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the cotton leaf water potential by visually representing the spatial distribution of crop water status on a large scale. Triazole fungicides are often referred to as ''stress protectants'' due to their ability to enhance the abiotic stress tolerance of plants. Xyway LFR@FMC (flutriafol) is a triazole and at-plant applied fungicide. The Xyway LFR@FMC fungicide that has been introduced into corn production system starting 2020 have been observed to improve plant performance under drought stress conditions. In this study, we accessed the potential of Xyway LFR@FMC product in altering the ability of corn (Zea mays L.) plants to control transpiration rates under water deficit-stressed (DS) conditions. Plants were grown under greenhouse conditions treated with Xyway LFR@FMC at 0.56, 0.77, and 1.11 L ha−1 in experiment 1 and 1.11 and 1.26 L ha−1 rates in experiment 2. Plants treated with 1.11 L ha−1 reduced the amount of water loss in response to DS and had the highest fraction of transpirable soil water (FTSW) thresholds. There was an increase in shoot hydraulic conductance (Kshoot) by 1.11 L ha−1 in both experiments. Plants treated with 0.77 and 1.11 L ha−1 had higher LWP rates compared to other treatments under DS conditions. In conclusion, the most likely chemical ingredient in Xyway LFR@FMC fungicide triggering the transpiration control response was flutriafol. This is the first report that early stomatal closure under soil drying conditions can be induced by the application of Xyway LFR@FMC fungicide. Application of at-plant fungicide, Xyway LFR@FMC has potential to reduce the negative effect of water-deficit stress in corn along with improving plants growth and physiological performance.

The globally increasing frequency of extreme drought events exacerbates the contradiction between the supply of water and the demand for high-quality urban greening. However, the mechanism of the response of urban shrubs to drought stress remains unclear. In this study, three typical urban shrubs (Euonymus japonicus, golden vicary [Ligustrum × vicaryi], and Japanese purple barberry [Berberis thunbergii var. atropurpurea]) that are used for greening in northern China were exposed to three levels of water (full irrigation, natural rain-fed, and extreme drought) in different periods of the growing season (April to May, June to July, and August to September) to investigate the responses of leaf water potential and photosynthetic parameters. The main results were as follows: (1) all the leaf water potentials (Ψ) and photosynthetic parameters (Pn) showed a typical linear relationship along the water gradient in the middle of the growing season. Extreme drought decreased the photosynthetic rates by 1.26~11.03 μmol·m−2·s−1 compared with the irrigated groups. However, the responses were less pronounced in the early and late growing seasons. (2) Different shrubs responded with different intensities and mechanisms. B. thunbergii var. atropurpurea showed clear anisohydric behavior throughout the whole growing season, while L. × vicaryi and E. japonicus showed stronger isohydric behavior during the early and late growing seasons. These findings are important to improve the sustainability of maintenance of ornamental plants from the scope of the efficient utilization of urban water resources.

The development of water-saving management relies on understanding the physiological response of crops to soil drought. The coordinated regulation of hydraulics and stomatal conductance in plant water relations has steadily received attention. However, research focusing on grain crops, such as winter wheat, remains limited. In this study, three soil water supply treatments, including high (H), moderate (M), and low (L) soil water contents, were conducted with potted winter wheat. Leaf water potential (Ψleaf), leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf), and stomatal conductance (gs), as well as leaf biochemical parameters and stomatal traits were measured. Results showed that, compared to H, predawn leaf water potential (ΨPD) significantly reduced by 48.10% and 47.91%, midday leaf water potential (ΨMD) reduced by 40.71% and 43.20%, Kleaf reduced by 64.80% and 65.61%, and gs reduced by 21.20% and 43.41%, respectively, under M and L conditions. Although gs showed a significant difference between M and L, Ψleaf and Kleaf did not show significant differences between these treatments. The maximum carboxylation rate (Vcmax) and maximum electron transfer rate (Jmax) under L significantly decreased by 23.11% and 28.10%, stomatal density (SD) and stomatal pore area index (SPI) under L on the abaxial side increased by 59.80% and 52.30%, respectively, compared to H. The leaf water potential at 50% hydraulic conduction loss (P50) under L was not significantly reduced. The gs was positively correlated with ΨMD and Kleaf, but it was negatively correlated with abscisic acid (ABA) and SD. A threshold relationship between gs and Kleaf was observed, with rapid and linear reduction in gs occurring only when Kleaf fell below 8.70 mmol m−2 s−1 MPa−1. Our findings demonstrate that wheat leaves adapt stomatal regulation strategies from anisohydric to isohydric in response to reduced soil water content. These results enrich the theory of trade-offs between the carbon assimilation and hydraulic safety in crops and also provide a theoretical basis for water management practices based on stomatal regulation strategies under varying soil water conditions.

Plant traits are often measured in the field or laboratory to characterize stress responses. However, direct measurements are not always cost effective for broader sampling efforts, whereas indirect approaches such as reflectance spectroscopy could offer efficient and scalable alternatives. Here, we used field spectroscopy to assess whether (1) existing vegetation indices could predict leaf trait responses to heat stress, or if (2) partial least squares regression (PLSR) spectral models could quantify these trait responses. On several warm, sunny days, we measured leaf trait responses indicative of photosynthetic mechanisms, plant water status, and morphology, including electron transport rate (ETR), photochemical quenching (qP), leaf water potential (Ψleaf), and specific leaf area (SLA) in 51 urban trees from nine species. Concurrent measures of hyperspectral leaf reflectance from the same individuals were used to calculate vegetation indices for correlation with trait responses. We found that vegetation indices predicted only SLA robustly (R2 = 0.55), while PLSR predicted all leaf trait responses of interest with modest success (R2 = 0.36 to 0.58). Using spectral band subsets corresponding to commercially available drone-mounted hyperspectral cameras, as well as those selected for use in common multispectral satellite missions, we were able to estimate ETR, qP, and SLA with reasonable accuracy, highlighting the potential for large-scale prediction of these parameters. Overall, reflectance spectroscopy and PLSR can identify wavelengths and wavelength ranges that are important for remote sensing-based modeling of important functional trait responses of trees to heat stress over broad ranges.

BACKGROUND: The root system is the major plant organ involved in water and nutrient acquisition, influencing plant growth and productivity. However, the relative importance of root size and uptake efficiency remains undetermined. A pot experiment was conducted using two wheat varieties with different root sizes to evaluate their capacity for water and nitrogen (N) uptake and their effects on grain production, water‐use efficiency (WUE), and N‐use efficiency (NUE) under two water treatments combined with three N levels. RESULTS: The leaf water potential and root exudates of changhan58 (CH, small root variety) were higher or similar to those of changwu134 (CW, large root variety) under water/N treatment combinations, indicating that small roots can transport enough water to above the ground. The addition of N improved plant growth, photosynthetic traits, and WUE significantly. There were no significant differences in WUE or grain production between the two cultivars under well‐watered conditions. However, they were significantly higher in CH than in CW under water deficit stress. Nitrogen uptake per unit root dry weight, glutaminase, and nitrate reductase activities were significantly higher in CH than in CW, regardless of moisture conditions. Root biomass was positively correlated with evapotranspiration, while the root/shoot ratio was negatively correlated with WUE (P < 0.05) but not with NUE. CONCLUSION: In a pot experiment, water and N uptake were more strongly associated with resource uptake availability than root size. Predawn leaf water potential (Ψpd) is the main parameter to determine plant water status, and it has been broadly used to support irrigation management. However, the Scholander pressure chamber methodology is laborious, time-consuming and invasive. This study examined a low-cost hyperspectral proximal sensor to estimate the Ψpd in grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.). For this, both the Ψpd and spectral reflectance (340–850 nm) were accessed in grapevines in a commercial vineyard located in the Douro Wine Region, northeast Portugal. A machine-learning algorithm was tested and validated to assess grapevine's water status. The experiment was performed in a randomized design with 12 grapevines (cv. Touriga Nacional) per irrigation treatment: non-irrigated, 30% crop evapotranspiration (Etc), and 60% Etc. The dataset was analyzed using Principal Component Analysis (PCA), and the machine-learning regression algorithm applied was Extreme Gradient Boosting (Xgboost). Results from the validation dataset (n = 108) for the Xgboost tested exhibited a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.23 MPa, a mean absolute error (MAPE) of 16.57% and an R² value of 0.95. These results demonstrate that the hyperspectral sensor and Xgboost algorithm show potential for predicting the Ψpd in vineyards, regardless of a plant's water status. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The efficiency‐safety tradeoff has been thoroughly investigated in plants, especially concerning their capacity to transport water and avoid embolism. Stomatal regulation is a vital plant behaviour to respond to soil and atmospheric water limitation. Recently, a stomatal efficiency‐safety tradeoff was reported where plants with higher maximum stomatal conductance (gmax) exhibited greater sensitivity to stomatal closure during soil drying, that is, less negative leaf water potential at 50% gmax (ψgs50). However, the underlying mechanism of this gmax‐ψgs50 tradeoff remains unknown. Here, we utilized a soil‐plant hydraulic model, in which stomatal closure is triggered by nonlinearity in soil‐plant hydraulics, to investigate such tradeoff. Our simulations show that increasing gmax is aligned with less negative ψgs50. Plants with higher gmax (also higher transpiration) require larger quantities of water to be moved across the rhizosphere, which results in a precipitous decrease in water potential at the soil‐root interface, and therefore in the leaves. We demonstrated that the gmax‐ψgs50 tradeoff can be predicted based on soil‐plant hydraulics, and is impacted by plant hydraulic properties, such as plant hydraulic conductance, active root length and embolism resistance. We conclude that plants may therefore adjust their growth and/or their hydraulic properties to adapt to contrasting habitats and climate conditions. Hydraulic traits are essential functional characteristics of plants related to water absorption, transport, and loss, serving as indicators of a plant's adaptability to prevailing environmental water conditions. However, the hydraulic traits of shrub, particularly desert plants in arid and semi-arid regions, have been underexplored. In this study, we conducted a pot experiment using Caroxylon passerinum (Bunge) Akhani and Roalson as the subject. Three treatment groups were established: adequate water supply, mild drought, and severe drought. After subjecting the shrub to drought and subsequent rehydration, we measured hydraulic conductivity, net photosynthetic rate, and stomatal conductance. We found that leaf water potential decreased and stomatal conductance and net photosynthesis decreased with increasing drought intensity. We found that leaf water potential and stomatal conductance decreased with increasing drought intensity. Although there was no significant change in hydraulic conductivity in the two drought groups, the values were greater in the drought group than in the control, and greater in the mild drought group than in the severe drought group. Meanwhile, the embolism resistance decreased with increasing drought intensity. After rehydration, hydraulic conductivity did not return to control levels in the severe drought group, as did embolism resistance in the two drought groups, and leaf water potential did not recover significantly. The results showed that drought stress increased the hydraulic conductivity of C. passerinum, and this effect was more pronounced under mild drought stress. After the stress was lifted, C. passerinum continued to maintain a lower leaf water potential to promote water uptake. The installation of solar facilities is increasing rapidly in the Mojave Desert USA, with the largest facility in North America (3227 ha) currently being built 30 km north of Las Vegas, NV. At the state level, Nevada (USA) has developed an energy plan to diversify its energy portfolio by 2030 with green energy representing 50% of the energy produced. Although solar is considered a clean energy, it does require significant amounts of land and as such may have negative consequences at the habitat and ecosystem levels. A multi-year study was conducted to assess the impact a photovoltaic facility in the Mojave Desert had on the growth and physiological response of two native shrubs (Ambrosia dumosa and Larrea tridentata) growing inside and outside the facility. These species were selected because they were the dominant species at the site and are representative of desert scrub communities throughout the Mojave Desert. At the time of construction, native plants and washes were left intact inside the solar facility. The solar panel arrays were separated at either 8 m or 10 m. Plants were selected for monitoring on the basis of location: at the panel drip line, below the panels, or midway between panel rows. Abiotic factors, including PAR, reference evapotranspiration, precipitation, soil water in storage, and infiltration, were monitored bi-monthly. The growth and physiological status of the plants were assessed by monitoring leaf water potential, chlorophyll index, canopy temperatures, non-structural carbohydrates in the roots and stems, leaf tissue ion concentrations, stem elongation, and seed production. Plants at the bottom edges of the panels received more precipitation due to runoff from the panels, which led to increased soil moisture in the long spacing but not the short spacing. The lower soil water in storage in the short spacing was related to greater growth and higher soil water extraction. Although the area under the panels provided shade in the summer and warmer temperatures in the winter, the incoming PAR was reduced by as much as 85%, causing plants growing under the panels to be spindly with lower canopy volume (L. tridentata, p = 0.03) and seed yield (A. dumosa, p = 0.05). Ambrosia plants remained green in color year-round (not going into winter dormancy) inside the facility and had elevated levels of starch in their roots and stems compared with plants growing at the outside control sites (p < 0.001). Larrea growing outside the facility had lower xylem water potentials compared with those inside the facility (p < 0.001), lower chlorophyll index (p < 0.001, Ambrosia as well), and lower stem elongation (p < 0.001), supporting the conclusion that both Larrea and Ambrosia performed better inside the facility. Shifts in δ13 C suggested greater water-use efficiency at the locations with the least amount of soil water in storage. Our results support the installation of solar facilities that minimize the impact on native plants and wash connectivity (ecovoltaics), which should translate into a reduced negative impact at the habitat and ecosystem levels. Basedon our results, energy companies that embrace ecovoltaic systems that take an engineering and biological approach should provide acceptable environments for desert fauna. However, corridors (buffers) will need to be maintained between solar facilities, and fences will need to have openings that allow for the continuous flow of animals and resources. Tropical forests are experiencing increases in vapour pressure deficit (D), with possible negative impacts on tree growth. Tree‐growth reduction due to rising D is commonly attributed to carbon limitation, thus overlooking the potentially important mechanism of D‐induced impairment of wood formation due to an increase in turgor limitation. Here we calibrate a mechanistic tree‐growth model to simulate turgor limitation of radial stem growth in mature Toona cilitata trees in an Asian tropical forest. Hourly sap flow and dendrometer measurements were collected to simulate turgor‐driven growth during the growing season. Simulated seasonal patterns of radial stem growth matched well with growth observations. Growth mainly occurred at night and its pre‐dawn build‐up appeared to be limited under higher D. Across seasons, the night‐time turgor pressure required for growth was negatively related to previous midday D, possibly due to a relatively high canopy conductance at high D, relative to stem rehydration. These findings provide the first evidence that tropical trees grow at night and that turgor pressure limits tree growth. We suggest including turgor limitation of tree stem growth in models also for tropical forest carbon dynamics, in particular, if these models simulate effects of warming and increased frequency of droughts. Efficient use of scarce water resources for optimum crop yield and quality is a major concern in dry lands. Traditionally, in-situ methods such as measurements of leaf water potential (L) or soil moisture have been used for estimating plant water stress in vineyards. However, these methods are time, labor, and cost-intensive, and limited to point measurements of water stress that do not offer much spatial resolution. In this study, hyperspectral images acquired from a ground-based utility vehicle were analyzed to evaluate the applicability of hyperspectral data in classifying plant water stress measured as L into three classes: no to mild water stress (L > -0.8 MPa), moderate water stress (-0.8 MPa = L = -1.2 MPa) and severe water stress (L < -1.2 MPa). A field trial was carried out in an experimental vineyard in arid southeastern Washington, USA. Grapevines were subjected to either full irrigation (FI) or regulated deficit irrigation (RDI). Several vegetative indices (VIs) derived from hyperspectral reflectance information were assessed to estimate the level of water stress. Linear relationships between VIs and L, and relative variable importance based on Gini impurity in different test models were evaluated to select optimal VIs for vine water stress classification. Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (GNDVI), Photochemical Reflectance Index (PRI), and Anthocyanin Index (ANT) showed consistently good trends in the data obtained over two growing seasons and were selected as the optimal VIs. In addition, air relative humidity, evapotranspiration, minimum soil temperature, and solar radiation demonstrated high significance in model development and were included in the final optimized random forest classifier (RFC) and artificial neural network (ANN) models. The RFC model had an accuracy of 73% while the ANN model had an accuracy of 70% in classifying plant water condition into three classes. Both models demonstrated good classification abilities and can be applied to analyze vine water stress and developing decision support tools for precision irrigation in vineyards. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) have been presumed to ameliorate crop tolerance to drought. Here, we review the role of AMF in maintaining water supply to plants from drying soils and the underlying biophysical mechanisms. We used a soil–plant hydraulic model to illustrate the impact of several AMF mechanisms on plant responses to edaphic drought. The AMF enhance the soil's capability to transport water and extend the effective root length, thereby attenuating the drop in matric potential at the root surface during soil drying. The synthesized evidence and the corresponding simulations demonstrate that symbiosis with AMF postpones the stress onset limit, which is defined as the disproportionality between transpiration rates and leaf water potentials, during soil drying. The symbiosis can thus help crops survive extended intervals of limited water availability. We also provide our perspective on future research needs and call for reconciling the dynamic changes in soil and root hydraulics in order to better understand the role of AMF in plant water relations in the face of climate changes. This study was conducted to investigate the response of stress irrigation management on chlorophyll content, water potential, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and canopy temperature in tomato during summer season. The main plot treatments consist of three drying cycles that is 7, 11 and 15 days and sub treatments include four irrigation levels viz.,60, 80, 100, and 120 % ETC. The control treatments i.e. drip irrigation with 100% ETC on every two alternate days. The results showed that the 7 days drying cycle showed maximum chlorophyll content, absorbed PAR and leaf water potential followed by 11 days drying cycle. Among the drip irrigation levels, the maximum drip irrigation levels 120 % ETC exhibited significantly maximum chlorophyll content, absorbed PAR and leaf water potential. However, it was at par with 100 % ETC and further 80 % ETC drip irrigation level also showed significant at 90 and 120 DAT. While in the case of difference between canopy and air temperature (Tc-Ta) less negative values were noted by 7 days drying cycle and 120% ETC drip irrigation level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background Andrographis paniculata (Burm. f.) Wall. ex Nees. is an important medicinal plant grown in tropical and sub-tropical regions where semi-arid condition restricts economically viable cultivation. Foliar exogenous application of methyl jasmonate (MeJ) and salicylic acid (SA) was tested for their effectiveness in preventing yield loss in five different morphotypes of A. paniculata subjected to deficit soil moisture stress imposed during 90–140 days after transplanting. Results Soil moisture content below 6% reduced chlorophyll and carotenoid content and upregulated antioxidant enzymes activity. The dry herbage yield was adversely affected by deficit soil moisture stress causing a 14% decline. The andrographolide concentration ranged between 1.40% and 1.54%. Though andrographolide concentration increased by 6%, andrographolide yield declined by 8.21% due to soil moisture stress. Moderately high doses of MeJ and SA reduced chlorophyll and carotenoid content and upregulated antioxidant enzymes activity, however, failed to prevent the loss in dry herbage yield or total andrographolide yield in any morphotype. Conclusions Foliar application of MeJ and SA do not warrant any protection against stress induced yield loss in field grown A. paniculata. However, morphotype AP 13 (round canopy, open-type branch, long narrow leaf) and AP 35 (columnar canopy, closed-type branch, long broad leaf) for having comparatively high herbage yield remained at a better position for total andrographolide yield under deficit soil moisture stress in the semi-arid climate.

Agriculture is confronted with the challenge of ensuring global food security, yet the rapid expansion of salinity stress undoubtedly restricts plant productivity in cultivable areas, posing a significant threat to crop yields. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMFs) have emerged as a biological tool for enhancing plant salt stress tolerance. To utilize this biological tool, this study evaluated the response in growth and physiological parameters of tolerant (Karaisali) and sensitive (Demre) pepper genotypes. The experiment involved mycorrhizal-treated (Glomus clarium) and non-mycorrhizal (control) plants of both the tolerant and sensitive pepper genotypes. The plants were subjected to two salt doses: 75 and 150 mM. The plant growth and physiological parameters were measured at 40 days after transplanting. The mycorrhizal activity was found to be significantly more effective in the sensitive genotype. We found notable differences in mycorrhizal activity between the pepper genotypes under salt stress conditions, with the sensitive genotype “Demre” showing greater responsiveness to mycorrhizal association compared with the “Karaisali” variety. Under both moderate (75 mM NaCl) and higher salt stress levels (150 mM NaCl), both the “Karaisali” and “Demre” varieties exhibited substantial increases in their shoot dry weights. However, these increases were consistently higher in the “Demre” plants. Moreover, the AMFs demonstrated significant enhancements in photosynthesis rates under both moderate and high salinity levels in both genotypes. Overall, our findings suggest that AMFs play a crucial role in improving plant growth, water status, and photosynthesis characteristics, particularly in salt-sensitive pepper genotypes, under moderate-to-high salinity levels. In conclusion, the plant growth, water status, and photosynthesis characteristics of the salt-sensitive pepper genotype were significantly improved by AMFs at medium and high salinity levels, such as 75 mM and 150 mM NaCl, respectively.

Introduction: Rainfall events can determine a cascade of plant physiological and ecological processes, and there is considerable interest in the way that rainfall modifies plant water flux dynamics. Methods: The sap flow density (SF) of the planted species of Vitex negundo and Hippophae rhamnoides, on the Loess Plateau of China was monitored using the heat balance method from 2015 to 2017. Results and discussion: The results showed that SF responded differently to rainfall classes because of the changing meteorological and soil water content (SWC) conditions. For class 1: 0.2-2 mm, SF increased by 14.36-42.93% for the two species, which were mainly attributable to the effect of solar radiation and vapor pressure deficit after rainfall. For class 2: 2-10 mm, SF remained nearly stable for V. negundo and decreased for H. rhamnoides because of the relative humidity's effect. For class 3: > 10 mm, SF increased significantly because of increased SWC and the increasing response to solar radiation. The increased percentage of SF was relatively higher for V. negundo when rainfall was less than 20 mm, while the value was higher for H. rhamnoides when rainfall was greater than 10 mm. Further, V. negundo's water potential increased at the soil-root interface (y0) and yL, indicating that the plant, which has shallower roots and a coarser of leaf and bark texture, considered as anisohydric species and used precipitation-derived upper soil water to survive. The relatively consistent yL and y0 for H. rhamnoides, which has deep roots and leathery leaves, indicated that this species was considered as isohydric species and insensitive to the slight change in the soil water status. The differed response patter and water use strategies between the two species showed that species as V. negundo are more susceptible to frequent, but small rainfall events, while larger, but less frequent rainfall events benefit such species as H. rhamnoides. This study quantified the effect of environmental factors for SF variation. The results could help formulate a selection process to determine which species are more suitable for sustainable management in the afforestation activities under the context of more frequent and intense rainfall events. Summary: Trees remain sufficiently hydrated during drought by closing stomata and reducing canopy conductance (Gc) in response to variations in atmospheric water demand and soil water availability. Thresholds that control the reduction of Gc are proposed to optimize hydraulic safety against carbon assimilation efficiency. However, the link between Gc and the ability of stem tissues to rehydrate at night remains unclear.We investigated whether species‐specific Gc responses aim to prevent branch embolisms, or enable night‐time stem rehydration, which is critical for turgor‐dependent growth. For this, we used a unique combination of concurrent dendrometer, sap flow and leaf water potential measurements and collected branch‐vulnerability curves of six common European tree species.Species‐specific Gc reduction was weakly related to the water potentials at which 50% of branch xylem conductivity is lost (P50). Instead, we found a stronger relationship with stem rehydration. Species with a stronger Gc control were less effective at refilling stem‐water storage as the soil dries, which appeared related to their xylem architecture.Our findings highlight the importance of stem rehydration for water‐use regulation in mature trees, which likely relates to the maintenance of adequate stem turgor. Improving soil fertility by adopting several sustainable management practices that are a prime concern for plant growth. Organic waste addition to agricultural soil is becoming a common practice that improves physical, chemical and hydrodynamic properties and minimizes environmental impact. The use of some alternative nutrition sources as biochar and compost has been tested on two-year-old olive varieties 'Chemlali' and 'Koroneiki.' Three treatments were established "Cont" soil didn't amended, "Comp" soil amended with Compost (90% soil+10% compost), and "Bioc" soil amended with biochar (90% soil+10% biochar). All treatments were conducted under deficit irrigation receiving 50% of daily evapotranspiration. We evaluated soil–plant water status and relationships between all studied parameters. Results showed that soil water content was the lowest in non-amended treatments and did not exceed 10%. During experiment, compost amendment induced a better water plant status for both studied varieties less than −2 MPa for mean seasonal leaf water potential, while the biochar amendment induced a weak stress level indicated by the lower potential that reached a minimum value equal to −2.9 MPa. Crop Water Stress Index on biochar-amended soil was more important than that measured on other treatments which confirms the sensitivity of biochar treatment to hard conditions. High negative relationships have been found between soil water statuses and plant water statuses. The highest determination coefficient was between crop water stresss index and leaf water potential was about 0.85. The pressure chamber is the most used tool for plant water status monitoring. However, species/cultivar and seasonal effects on protocols for reliable water potential determination have not been properly tested. In four grapevine cultivars and two times of the season (early season, Es; late season, Ls, under moderate drought), we assessed the maximum sample storage time before leaf water potential (Ψleaf) measurements and the minimum equilibration time for stem water potential (Ψstem) determination, taking 24 h leaf cover as control. In 'Pinot gris', Ψleaf already decreased after 1 h leaf storage in both campaigns, dropping by 0.4/0.5 MPa after 3 h, while in 'Refosk', it decreased by 0.1 MPa after 1 and 2 h in Es and Ls, respectively. In 'Merlot' and 'Merlot Kanthus', even 3 h storage did not affect Ψleaf. In Es, the minimum Ψstem equilibration was 1 h for 'Refošk' and 10 min for 'Pinot gris' and 'Merlot'. In Ls, 'Merlot Kanthus' required more than 2 h equilibration, while 1 h to 10 min was sufficient for the other cultivars. The observed cultivar and seasonal differences indicate that the proposed tests should be routinely performed prior to experiments to define ad hoc procedures for water status determination. Main conclusion: Leaf water potential, gas exchange, and chlorophyll fluorescence exhibited significant differences among genotypes, high environmental effects, but low heritability. The highest-yielding and drought-tolerant genotypes presented superior harvest index and grain weight, compared to drought-susceptible ones. Physiological phenotyping can help identify useful traits related to crop performance under water-limited conditions. A set of fourteen bread wheat genotypes with contrasting grain yield (GY) was studied in eight Mediterranean environments in Chile, resulting from the combination of two sites (Cauquenes and Santa Rosa), two water conditions (rainfed-WL and irrigated-WW), and four growing seasons (2015–2018). The objectives were to (i) evaluate the phenotypic variation of leaf photosynthetic traits after heading (anthesis and grain filling) in different environments; (ii) analyze the relationship between GY and leaf photosynthetic traits and carbon isotope discrimination (Δ13C); and (iii) identify those traits that could have a greater impact in the determination of tolerant genotypes under field conditions. Agronomic traits exhibited significant genotypic differences and genotype × environment (GxE) interaction. The average GY under the WW condition at Santa Rosa was 9.2 Mg ha−1 (range 8.2–9.9 Mg ha−1) and under the WL condition at Cauquenes was 6.2 Mg ha−1 (range 3.7–8.3 Mg ha−1). The GY was closely related to the harvest index (HI) in 14 out of 16 environments, a trait exhibiting a relatively high heritability. In general terms, the leaf photosynthetic traits presented low GxE interaction, but high environmental effects and low heritability, except for the chlorophyll content. The relationships between GY and leaf photosynthetic traits were weaker when performed across genotypes in each environment, indicating low genotypic effects, and stronger when performed across environments for each genotype. The leaf area index and Δ13C also presented high environmental effects and low heritability, and their correlations with GY were influenced by environmental effects. The highest-yielding and drought-tolerant genotypes presented superior HI and grain weight, but no clear differences in leaf photosynthetic traits or Δ13C, compared to drought-susceptible ones.
