The IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering (T-ASE) wishes to thank the 1344 reviewers over the past year who have performed an essential role in maintaining the quality of this publication. T-ASE strives for the 90–90 standard, i.e., 90% of articles should be reviewed within 90 days of submission. The review process starts when the Editor-in-Chief assigns the paper to an Editor, who assigns it to an Associate Editor (AE). The AE then obtains confirmation from three to five reviewers, carefully studies the results, and makes a recommendation to the Editor, who then makes a decision that is reported back to the lead author. This review process is very demanding, especially under time constraints. We have summarized the process under “Guidelines for T-ASE Editors and AEs for Handling Papers” on our website. I am pleased to report that submissions have steadily increased (over 1000 in 2020) and our impact factor is now 5.083, a 2.94% increase over the past year. As we strive to increase the quality and impact of the journal, we rely on the hard work of our reviewers and members of the Editorial Board. To those dedicated volunteers, and to anyone who may have been inadvertently omitted from the following list, we extend our sincere appreciation.

BACKGROUND: Ectopic pregnancy (EP) is the implantation of an embryo outside the eutopic cavity with the most location of EP is in the fallopian tube (FT), known as tubal EP (TEP). The FT of TEP expresses higher levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interleukin-1 (IL-1), IL-6, and IL-8. AIM: The study aimed to look systematically into the current literature and carefully analyze the results to explore the role of IL in EP. METHODS: Three independent reviewers conducted the literature search through some electronic databases searching for articles fulfilling inclusion and exclusion criteria. The lead author independently assessed the risk of bias of each of the 313 articles identified in database searching, 12 articles met the criteria for this review. CONCLUSION: IL-6 and IL-8 have diagnostic significance in predicting EP with the cutoff levels of IL-6 and IL-8 which were 26.48 and 40 pg/mL. Further, research is needed for the role of other interleukins in EP.

A geoarchaeological coring survey of the Forum Boarium has shed considerable light on Rome's archaic landscape. We present the first empirical evidence that substantiates ancient and modern assumptions about the existence of a river harbour and ford in early Rome. Prior to the growth of the city, the riverbank-reconstructed as a high ledge at the base of the Capitoline Hill and a low-lying shore north of the Aventine-was particularly advantageous for river-related activities. However, the river valley changed significantly in the sixth century b.c.e., as a result of complex fluvial processes that were arguably spurred by urbanisation. Around the beginning of the Republic, Rome's original harbour silted up, and a high, wide riverbank emerged in its place. The siltation continued until the Forum Boarium was urbanised in the mid-Republic. In order to build their city and maintain river harbour operations, the Romans therefore had to adapt to dynamic ecological conditions. Publisher PDF

BACKGROUND: Presenting research at national and international meetings is an important aspect of the practice of respiratory care. Our department regularly presented abstracts but few projects were written up as manuscripts. We also noted that we did not have a centralized strategy to evaluate individual projects and provide mentorship. To address these challenges, we formed a Research Committee that meets monthly. We hypothesized that the formation of this committee would be associated with an increase in published manuscripts. METHODS: We evaluated all original research abstracts authored or co-authored by Duke respiratory therapists presented at the AARC Open Forum between 2009 and 2019. Abstracts were grouped into two time periods; 1) 2009–2013 (before the formation of the research committee) and 2) 2014–2019 (after the formation of the research committee). Abstracts were evaluated based on authors, type of study, patient population, and whether the abstract resulted in a manuscript. Primary outcome was the percentage of abstracts published as manuscripts. RESULTS: A total of 56 abstracts were presented by 23 different lead authors, with 16 (29%) published as manuscripts. After formation of the committee, fewer abstracts per year were presented, but these abstracts were more likely to be published as manuscripts (53% vs 18%, P = .02). For abstracts published as manuscripts, there was a significant difference in the type of study before and after committee formation (P = .042), but there were no differences in lead author credentials, senior author credentials, author gender, or patient population. CONCLUSIONS: The formation of a research committee was associated with an increase in the percentage of abstracts published as manuscripts.

Purpose To evaluate the presence of sex-specific analysis (SSA) in abstracts accepted for podium presentation at the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) and American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) annual meetings from 2016 to 2019. Methods Abstracts accepted for podium presentation at the AANA and AOSSM annual meetings from 2016 to 2019 were selected for review. Studies that included sex as a variable in a multifactorial statistical model were considered to have performed adequate SSA. Secondary data collected included whether the abstract had a female lead or senior author, the degrees of the female authors, and the anatomic focuses of studies with SSA. Results Of the 891 total abstracts accepted for podium presentation at the AANA and AOSSM annual meetings from 2016 to 2019, 90 (10%) included SSA. There were 284 AANA abstracts, 24 (8%) of which reported SSA. Of the 607 AOSSM abstracts, 66 (11%) reported SSA. There were 43 female first authors (15%) and 33 female senior authors (12%) of the AANA abstracts compared with 92 female first authors (15%) and 39 female senior authors (6%) of the AOSSM abstracts. Of the 891 total abstracts, 135 (15%) listed a female lead author and 72 (8%) had a female senior author. Of the 135 female first authors, 92 (68%) had an M.D., whereas 40 of the 72 female senior authors (56%) had an M.D. Analysis of all abstracts combined showed a positive correlation between SSA and a female first author (Pearson correlation coefficient = 0.035, P = .147), as well as between SSA and a female senior author (Pearson correlation coefficient = 0.052, P = .059). Conclusions From 2016 to 2019, only 10% of abstracts accepted for podium presentation at the AANA and AOSSM annual meetings included SSA. Altogether, women represented 15% of first authors and 8% of senior authors. Clinical Relevance This study highlights the low percentage of SSA in abstracts presented at the AANA and AOSSM annual meetings from 2016 to 2019. Future studies should attempt to perform SSA when relevant to better evaluate differences in outcomes between male and female patients.

During each Heinrich stadial (HS), temperatures in southern Europe typically dropped several degrees during several hundred to few thousand years. We have developed a one-dimensional thermal conduction model that transfers the typical surface temperature anomaly of a HS to a series of hypothetical underlying caves. The results show that with increasing depth, the thermal anomaly is attenuated, the lag time increases, and the signal structure experiences larger modifications. The model suggests that in most cases, it is not acceptable to assume a synchronous thermal variability and similar average temperature values between the surface atmosphere and the cave interior at millennial timescales. We also simulated the thermal impact of the modeled HS on speleothem δ18O records. The outputs of most model scenarios suggest that temperature changes associated with the HS produce δ18O anomalies capable of contributing significantly or even decisively to the speleothem isotope variability. Therefore, despite controls other than temperature often being considered more important when interpreting Pleistocene speleothem δ18O records in temperate climates, this research suggests that temperature is expected to be one of the major controls of δ18O values in most cave sites outside the tropics and should be included as a significant parameter affecting Pleistocene speleothem δ18O records., The lead author of this research (DD-V) received funds from the project “Inter-comparison of Karst Denudation Measurement Methods” (KADEME) (IP-2018-01-7080) financed by Croatian Science Foundation

Professor Bidyut Kanti Datta, a renowned professor of the Department of Pharmacy, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Dhaka, died at the age of 73 on Friday 11 September 2020 in Canada (Canadian time 7.10 am and BD time 5.10 pm), as a consequence of COVID-19 infection followed by pneumonia. This article is a brief review of his research work where the authors of this article are immensely proud to be associated with. Prof Datta published more than 60 research articles in reputed journals, and the lead author (SDS) of this article, one of his former students from the University of Dhaka, is a co-author of 20 of those publications. These 20 publications resulted from a long-standing research collaboration that spanned over two decades, especially research involving various Bangladeshi species of the genus Polygonum L. of the family, Polygonaceae, and they demonstrate the breadth and depth of research activities that Prof Datta was involved in, and his long-standing commitment to research that underpinned and enriched his teaching offerings to hundreds of students he taught in higher education sector in Bangladesh. This study examines students’ perceptions of an open pedagogy experiment in which they created their own textbook for an undergraduate public health course. The lead author’s primary motivation for developing this assignment was the high cost associated with the traditional textbooks that were otherwise needed to cover the breadth of subject matter in the course. The resulting open textbook included 19 chapters, covering all the required components of the course, and the final version was published in a statewide open educational resource repository. Students provided feedback about this undertaking by way of an end-of-term survey. The results showed high percentages of students who associated the textbook creation project with greater engagement and satisfaction than the passive use of traditional textbooks. Students also reported their perception of a learning benefit related to the creation of course content. Pedagogical implications of this study are discussed, and future research questions are proposed.

PhysPort (www.physport.org) has become the go-to place for physics faculty to learn to apply research-based teaching and assessment in their classrooms. Usage has doubled every two years since the site was released in 2011, and 20% of all U.S. physics faculty are now verified educators on PhysPort. The lead author conceived of PhysPort in 2007 after meeting many physics faculty interested in incorporating results of physics education research (PER) in their classrooms but with no idea where to start. At the time, most PER results were buried in research journals not accessible to ordinary physics educators, and there was no central place to learn about results and implications for classroom practice. Throughout its development, PhysPort has been based on user research: we interview physics faculty about their needs, design the site based on those needs, and conduct usability testing to see how we meet those needs. PhysPort is a joint product of the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) and Kansas State University (K-State), with contributions from many universities, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), and a library within the ComPADRE.org digital library. The site (originally called the PER User's Guide) was first funded by an NSF grant in 2009 and released in November 2011. Over the past 3 decades, indigenous guardian programs (also known as indigenous rangers or watchmen) have emerged as an institution for indigenous governments to engage in collaborative environmental governance. Using a systematic review of peer‐reviewed literature for research conducted in Australia, Canada, Aotearoa‐New Zealand, and the United States, we sought to characterize the emergence of indigenous guardians in the literature and explore whether guardian approaches are representative of Indigenous approaches to environmental governance. Using a multistep relevance‐screening method, we reviewed 83 articles published since 1995, that report on, critique, or comment on Indigenous guardians. Our findings indicated that most articles on the topic were published in the last decade (88%), focused on Australia (65%), and were in a social science discipline (53%). The lead author of the majority of articles was an academic, although only half of the articles included an indigenous scholar or member of an indigenous group or organization as a coauthor. Finally, 11 articles were on research of guardian programs that were locally led and only 5 exemplified indigenous governance, based on 2 well‐known community‐based monitoring typologies. Our findings indicate that more research is required to understand the implications of current guardian programs for indigenous self‐determination, particularly when such programs are embedded in a broader western environmental governance structure., Article impact statement: Since 2010, the number of peer‐reviewed articles on indigenous guardians has risen substantially, signaling their vital role in conservation.

This chapter summarises the concepts of the keystone flap including the anatomy, physiology and design principles pioneered by Associate Professor Felix C. Behan of Melbourne, Australia. This is the modern local flap and is now a preferred option for the lead author. It is simple, versatile and reliable and can be used from head to toe, for small, medium or large surgical defects. The lead author’s 5-year experience with this modern local flap is reviewed.

A previous article sought to signpost papers that were considered helpful when starting on the journey of practicing evidence-based medicine (EBM).1 The lead author was invited to run a workshop at the Eighth Conference of the International Society for Evidence-Based Health Care run in collaboration with the Gruppo Italiano per la Medicina Basata sulle Evidenze from 6 November to 9 November 2019. The aim of the workshop was to challenge a group of teachers and educators to consider useful papers for the teaching of EBM/evidence-based healthcare (EBHC). The second aim was to start a database of such studies. The third aim was to share learning and foster discussion from the workshop through journal publication. EBM and EBHC are used interchangeable throughout this article. Working in eight small groups (three to five people), teachers and researchers of EBM/EBHC (n=29) first listed any articles that they considered useful for new teachers starting out their teaching journey. So that the challenge also acted as learning for the participants, they were deliberately not briefed on the full nature of the workshop (eg, the consideration and selection of specific articles). After 15 min, each group spent another 10 min selecting their top three articles from their original list (if this list had more than three papers). This was followed by another 5 min selecting their final article to put forward for this paper consensus and any disagreements resolved via discussion. Groups had to provide the following information for each paper: authors; year of publication; title; reason(s) for inclusion; link to paper/reference. Learning from previous experiences, the workshop lead (DN) instructed that a group could not select an article for which a group member was an author thus avoiding one possible source of conflict. A large study of children and young people who caught SARS-CoV-2 has found that as many as one in seven (14%) may still have symptoms 15 weeks later.1 However, this figure is lower than in some studies that have reported a prevalence of long covid as high as 51% in children and young people. Speaking at a Science Media Centre briefing, the study’s lead author, Terence Stephenson, who is Nuffield professor of child health at the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health in London, said, “It is reassuring that the figures were lower than the worst case scenarios predicted last December. The benefits of exercise and rehabilitation after stroke are well-known. A regimen of exercise after stroke helps to improve strength and balance. These benefits have both short-term and long-term effects: people function much better in the long run if they have had a focused, challenging course of rehabilitation. The lead author of an article published in this issue of Neurology® , Dr. Julie Bernhardt, had reported in 2017 on the benefits of beginning exercise within 7 days after stroke.1 In the article appearing in this issue, “Fatal and Nonfatal Events Within 14 Days After Early, Intensive Mobilization Poststroke,”2 Dr. Julie Bernhardt and her colleagues tried to answer a simple question: Are there any concerns that arise if a person recovering from a stroke begins an exercise regimen that starts within 24 hours after the stroke?

In this chapter, the authors argue that EMI does not mean English-only instruction and that code-switching and translanguaging practices are a natural feature of multilingual communication, and serve numerous important functions in the EMI classroom. Drawing on research examining code-switching in the classroom, extending back to early frameworks in the 1980s, Sahan and Rose then look at more recent frameworks used to research the functions of different language use in content language classrooms. Noting that the majority of this research has investigated code-switching, it is then argued that the fluidity of language use in EMI classes may be better characterised as translanguaging practices, and that new understanding of functions and how to record them are needed. Given the inherently multilingual nature of the EMI classroom, translanguaging captures how teachers and students move freely across language boundaries. This is illustrated by drawing upon examples in the existing literature as well as from the lead author's own empirical research on EMI practices at universities in Turkey, which has led to a new framework for understanding the function of language use in EMI settings.

A História da Psicologia é considerada um campo de pesquisas, discussões, ensino e formação profissional, que tem se propagado e circulado, no Brasil e em outros países, a partir de várias manifestações culturais acadêmicas. Este artigo descreve e analisa produções brasileiras em História da Psicologia, segundo uma análise bibliométrica de artigos publicados de 1996 a 2019. Obtivemos 112 textos em que os dados foram categorizados em três grandes grupos: perfil dos autores; características da produção; e aspectos dos estudos. Os resultados indicam preponderância de autor principal feminino e, independentemente do gênero, há prevalência de doutores como primeiro autor, com predominante filiação institucional do Sudeste. As produções versam, principalmente, sobre temas como Educação, História dos Saberes Psicológicos e Política. Por fim, os resultados sugerem um uso pouco uniforme do termo “história da psicologia”, que vem ligado tanto a trabalhos propriamente historiográficos quanto a estudos que fazem “históricos” ou “introdução/conceitualização” de temáticas, bem como a ocorrência de títulos, resumos e palavras-chave pouco precisos.

The purpose of this pictorial is to provide a unique perspective, through an autoethnographic account, of the experiences a woman of colour may have, as she seeks to enter into the world of makerspaces. As an intersectional woman, conducting this autoethnography is a means to assess the cultural and gender diversity of makerspaces in an Australian metro city, and their practices to foster inclusivity. Over a period of 6 months, the lead author explored 4 different types of makerspaces. The autoethnography found cultural and gendered roles and biases in the physical and socio-cultural environments of each makerspace, as well as in terminologies, tools, materials and learning pathways that constrained her involvement. The research identifies important factors that could be amplified to increase the involvement of intersectional women and the foundations for new guidelines and activities that would enable makerspaces to improve their diversity and inclusivity.

Universities are increasingly expected to demonstrate the wider societal impacts of academic research. Yet women management scholars were disproportionately under‐represented in leading impact cases in the UK's REF (Research Excellence Framework) 2014. An analysis of 395 REF impact cases for business and management studies with an identifiable lead author revealed that only 25 per cent were led by women, of which 54 per cent were sole authored. Based on 12 in‐depth interviews with women impact case writers, we use Acker's inequality regimes framework to understand invisible and socially constructed gendering of the UK's policy that is designed to evaluate research impact. In a knowledge‐intensive workplace dominated by men, the shape and degree of gendered bases of inequality, systemic practices, processes and controls result in sub‐optimal talent management and gendered knowledge. We call for university leaders to be proactive in addressing barriers that fail to support or recognize women's leadership of research impact.

In hot drylands the main causes of concrete deterioration are physical salt attack by aggressive evaporite salts, reinforcement corrosion (e.g. carbonation, chloride ingress) and aggregate unsoundness. The manufacture of concrete presents more problems than in temperate countries due to the higher ambient temperatures and drying winds, plus windblown salts (mainly chlorides and sulphates). However, it is not just aridity that is significant to concrete in hot drylands, but also the availability of moisture and the duration of moist conditions. This paper draws upon the lifetime9s experience gained by the lead author (PGF) and aims to provide a basic introduction to the ‘engineering geology of concrete9 for hot drylands. The focus is on the Middle East and North Africa, but the general messages have broader applicability.

The majority of studies evaluating genomic selection (GS) for plant breeding have used single-trait, single-site models that ignore genotype x environment interaction (GEI) effects. However, such studies do not accurately reflect the complexities of many applied breeding programs, and previous papers have found that models that incorporate GEI effects and multiple traits can increase the accuracy of genomic estimated breeding values (GEBVs). This study’s goal was to test GS methods for prediction in scenarios that simulate earlygeneration yield testing by correcting for field spatial variation, and fitting multienvironment and multitrait models on data for 14 traits of varying heritability evaluated in unbalanced designs across four environments. Corrections for spatial variation increased across-environment trait heritability by 25%, on average, but had little effect on model predictive ability. Results between all models were generally equivalent when predicting the performance of newly introduced genotypes. However, models incorporating GEI information and multiple traits increased prediction accuracy by up to 9.6% for low-heritability traits when phenotypic data were sparsely collected across environments. The results suggest that GS models using multiple traits and incorporating GEI effects may best be suited to predicting line performance in new environments when phenotypic data have already been collected across a subset of the total testing environments. Over the past few years, the lead author has had the opportunity to excavate multiple large sites in California, working on behalf of developers to keep their projects in compliance with their permits. She also worked in conjunction with local tribes to resolve burial issues with each excavation. During these excavations, she observed the challenges that the tribes encountered when dealing with fast-paced cultural resource management (CRM) projects where burial retrieval and a shortage of resources were the norm. For many years, archaeologists have viewed CRM as only dealing with the material culture of the past; however, archaeologists also consult and work with living cultures. This article will address the endemic problem in CRM that stems from a lack of planning, preparation, resources, and training and how it affects the burial excavations that archaeologists and tribes encounter in the CRM setting. It will also look for solutions to remedy a long-broken system that continues to ignore existing laws set in place to protect resources, as well as the relationships between the Native American community, agencies, researchers, and land developers.

Introduction There are 10 government-regulated ambulance services (paramedic provider services) in Australasia who are members of the Council of Ambulance Authorities (CAA). These CAA-member services each produce clinical practice guidelines (CPGs), which guide the practice of their paramedics. Common to each set of CAA-member CPG is a guideline that addresses cardiac arrest due to ventricular fibrillation and pulseless ventricular tachycardia (pulseless VT/VF). This study sought to answer the question: ‘Are current CAA-member CPGs developed with sufficient methodological rigour to consistently produce guidelines that, according to validated, evidence-based best practices, can be recommended for clinical use?’ Methods This question was addressed by performing a comparison of existing CAA-member CPGs for pulseless VT/VF against the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research & Evaluation (AGREE II) instrument. All CPGs were anonymised and sent to each appraiser along with the AGREE II appraisal sheet. Appraisals were conducted independently for each CPG and returned to the lead author for collation. The anonymised results were then shared among all appraisers for consideration and discussion. Appraisers were free to change their appraisal after considering the comments from the other appraisers, and results were then converted into a final percent score for each CPG in accord with the recommended AGREE II instrument methodology. One appraisal question, in addition to the AGREE II criteria was added to each appraisal; the response to this was analysed separately. Results Nine CPGs were evaluated according to the AGREE II instrument. The appraisers gave passing marks to only two of the six domains in the AGREE II instrument: Domain 1 – Scope and Purpose (73%), and Domain 4 – Clarity of Presentation (74%). Less than passing marks were awarded for Domain 2 – Stakeholder Involvement (27%). Scores of less than 10% were awarded for Domain 5 – Applicability (8%) and Editorial Independence (1%). Conclusion Based on the findings of this paper, the authors conclude that it cannot be assumed that current CAA-member paramedic CPGs are developed with sufficient methodological rigour to consistently produce guidelines that, according to validated, evidence-based best practices can be recommended for clinical use. However, most of the authors agree that the CPGs reviewed could be recommended for clinical use with relatively minor modifications. It would be useful to determine whether end users of the CAA-member CPGs agree on the importance of characteristics of CPGs that the AGREE II instrument appraises.

This article summarizes the background, content and outcomes of a special meeting that was convened among oncologists and scientists to discuss the role of pharmacogenetic (PGx) testing in pediatric clinical oncology practice. This meeting provided an opportunity for what the lead author (AM Issa) refers to as the ‘voice of the clinician’ dynamic to be amplified in order to better understand how personalized or precision medicine applications such as PGx testing are adopted and incorporated into clinical settings and what we can learn from the experiences of current and ongoing implementation PGx approaches to further the implementation of precision medicine applications in real-world environments. Group dynamics and clinical experience with PGx testing and return of results shaped the discussion.

In its first twenty years of existence Zootaxa has been widely utilized among researchers of Opiliones, mainly those coming from Latin American countries, principally Brazil. During 2003–2020, a total of 141 papers on Opiliones were published in Zootaxa (no papers were published on Opiliones in the first two years, 2001–2002). The journal has greatly facilitated the dissemination of knowledge on Opiliones, especially with respect to the taxonomy and systematics of harvestmen from the Neotropical Realm. Those 141 papers in Zootaxa include almost a quarter (191) of the new species of Opiliones described between 2001 and 2020, as well as 112 new synonymies. Additionally, 27 of those papers proposed 182 new or restored combinations. A total of 108 authors working in 25 countries have contributed papers to Zootaxa focusing on Opiliones. There is clearly a predominance for collaborative contributions with more than twice as many papers authored by two or more authors compared to single-author publications. In general, the majority of papers deal within the local biogeographic realm (where the lead author resides). Studies of harvestmen from seven of the eight biogeographic realms were published in Zootaxa during 2003–2020. The largest portion of these contributions were by far focused on the Neotropical opiliofauna, but Australasian, Nearctic, Indomalayan, Palearctic, Afrotropical and Antarctic opiliofauna are covered as well. No papers on Opiliones have been published in Zootaxa by authors representing countries in Africa. We also recognize a strong gender bias in authorship and the current composition of Opiliones subject editors. The publication of the United Kingdom (UK) Standards for Public Involvement (PI) (UK Standards) in research drew a clear line in the sand regarding the importance of utilising the unique experience, skills and expertise that lay people may offer to the development, conduct and dissemination of clinical research. The UK Standards provide a benchmark which researchers should aim to achieve, yet its implementation continues to be a step wise iterative process of change management. A recent evaluation by a regional research group has suggested that our understanding of PI is enhanced through reflection on the UK Standards. We report on the utility of PI in the design, conduct and dissemination of the HIDDen study, a national, multicentre clinical study based across three UK centres.A retrospective review of PI within the HIDDen study was conducted using field notes taken by the lead author from interactions throughout their involvement as a lay representative on the study. Key members of the HIDDen study were interviewed and data analysed to explore adherence to the UK Standards.There was universal support for PI across the study management group with genuine inclusivity of lay members of the committee. All six of the UK Standards were met to varying degrees. The greatest opportunities lay in 'working together' and 'support and learning'. There were challenges meeting 'governance' with evidence of participation in decision making but less evidence of opportunities in management, regulation, leadership.This study concurs with previous research supporting the utility of the Standards in the conduct and evaluation of PI in clinical research. To our knowledge this is the first multi-national study to be evaluated against the UK Standards.The past decade has seen a genuine increase in patient and public involvement (PI) in clinical research, far beyond a symbolic presence on a trial management committee or inclusion on a grant application. The United Kingdom (UK) Standards for Public Involvement provide a useful structure to support PI throughout a study as well as defining a benchmark that can be used to improve the involvement of patients and the public in studies.The importance of reflecting on and reporting on PI in specific studies has been recognised since it contributes to a stepwise change process which will eventually lead to PI becoming normal practice for clinical research. A recent review identified a myriad of frameworks by which PI may be evaluated, risking an inconsistent approach to PI evaluation and consequently slowing down its progression.The Hospice Inpatient Deep vein thrombosis Detection study (HIDDen) was a national multicentre study to explore the prevalence and associated variables of blood clots in patients with advanced cancer when they were admitted to the specialist palliative care unit.In this paper we will be considering the HIDDen research in terms of the UK Standards for Public Involvement.

In 1962, a special issue of British Birds alleged that the number and pattern of records of rare birds from around Hastings, in southern England, between 1892 and 1930 were so improbable that fraud was the only reasonable explanation. A press conference resulted in absurdly exaggerated reports that encouraged general acceptance of the alleged fraud and in particular that George Bristow, a local taxidermist, was responsible. There are potential weaknesses in the statistical analysis of the purported fraud, and the case against Bristow was based on probability and innuendo, not solid evidence. Plausible information from Bristow and the respected ornithologist Norman Ticehurst was largely ignored, as were the practicalities of fraud, especially during wartime and in the absence of modern deep-freeze facilities. The lead author was apparently prejudiced against taxidermists. The allegations unfairly tainted Bristow and his profession, and have encouraged some distrust of historical datasets.

This article explores the lived experience of transitioning from closed to open prison conditions by a mandatory life‐sentenced prisoner. Using autoethnographic methodology the lead author's experience of this significant life‐sentence event forms the basis of a wider discussion. Research around this process is lacking. This article examines the phenomena around prisoner identity, prison culture and prisoner adaptation; it explores what impact of years spent in the closed prison estate can have on how open prison conditions are experienced. The authors identify important social and ontological obstacles to successful transition to open conditions and reflect on how it exposes the enduring harms resultant from serving a life sentence.

This paper was motivated by the anecdotal experiences of the lead author on the views of middle-class Black African parents who did their schooling under apartheid and who were parents of high school learners in contemporary post-apartheid South Africa. In this paper narrative inquiry was used to engage with ten purposively selected Black African parents. In the process their narratives of schooling under apartheid and the parental choices they made on the subjects their children studied were constructed. As a theoretical lens Critical Race Theory was used to allow the parents to tell their counter-stories. These parents were adamant that their children should not study history. This was partially rooted in their own apartheid-era schooling experiences. For the most part the Black African parents tried to live their unfulfilled dreams and ambitions through their children by getting them to study science and mathematics as this was directly linked to upward-mobility, middle-classness, prosperity and success. While school history in the post-apartheid context was lauded and appreciated, the prevailing sentiment was that their children should steer clear of it.

With backgrounds in the science of information fusion and information technology, a review of Systems Engineering (SE) for Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based systems is provided across time, first with a brief history of AI and then the systems’ perspective based on the lead author’s experience with information fusion processes. The different types of AI are reviewed, such as expert systems and machine learning. Then SE is introduced and how it has evolved and must evolve further to become fully integrated with AI, such that both disciplines can help each other move into the future and evolve together. Several SE issues are reviewed, including risk, technical debt, software engineering, test and evaluation, emergent behavior, safety, and explainable AI.

The annual BCI Research Awards highlight each year’s best projects involving BCIs. This year, one of the submissions that was nominated for an award introduced a new approach to help surgeons identify areas that cause seizures. This new work could make epilepsy surgeries more effective while helping us understand what causes epilepsy and why medications to help people with epilepsy are not always effective. Future work could help other types of patients and even identify patterns outside of the brain. This chapter presents an interview with Karla Burelo, the lead author of this project.

In November 2017, the Victorian Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) Act was passed enabling people with a progressive terminal illness to end their life voluntarily. Heated debate abounded including, to some extent within palliative care, which was also challenged with developing processes around the legislation enactment. Objective In response, the lead author convened a series of meetings of palliative care physicians: 1. To share ideas about preparations being undertaken within services; and 2. To re-establish professional cohesion following the divide that the legislation had presented. Design Setting/Participants: A series of three closed meetings were held between the legislation passage and its implementation, with all Victorian palliative care physicians invited to attend. Meetings were facilitated by an experienced psychiatrist from outside the field. Results These meetings proved very valuable as physicians collectively sought to define and respond to challenges, simultaneously reflecting on the personal and professional implications for individuals and the field. Key areas raised including gauging institutional 'readiness' for the legislation through staff surveys; the educational role of palliative care staff of the legislation implications; communication skills training; the role (if any) of palliative care in the processes of VAD; and the perceptions of palliative care itself in health services and the community. It was during the processes of discussing challenges and sharing solutions that the attendees appeared to re-affirm their professional interconnections. A description of the key elements of these discussions may be useful to others who may yet face similar circumstances with the introduction of VAD legislation. This article is protected by copyright. Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text., Summary: Fasciectomy remains the mainstay of surgical treatment for Dupuytren’s disease at many units worldwide, particularly in cases of recurrence after aponeurotomy or enzymatic fasciotomy. In some series, this has been reported as high as 48% in 3 years. The lead author has since abandoned the use of collagenase altogether. In this innovation article, we describe simple maneuvers to aid the planning and dissection of a Dupuytren’s fasciectomy. We describe techniques to enable efficient dissection of the cord and minimize problems when designing skin flaps. We also highlight technical points in revision cases.

A Cochrane systematic review has found that, when it comes to antibody testing for covid-19, timing is everything. The review of 54 studies found that antibody tests carried one week after a patient first developed symptoms detected only 30% of people who had covid-19. Accuracy increased in to 72% at two weeks and to 94% in the third week.1 “If you use them at the wrong time they don’t work,” said Jon Deeks, professor of biostatistics at the University of Birmingham and the review’s lead author. The duration of rises in antibodies is also currently unknown, and the researchers found very little data beyond 35 days after the start of symptoms. Intense sexual selection in the form of mate choice can facilitate the evolution of different alternative reproductive strategies. These strategies can be condition-dependent, wherein genetically similar individuals express the strategy based on their condition. Our study shows that baffling, a mate attraction strategy using self-made acoustic amplifiers, employed by male tree crickets, is a classic example of a condition-dependent alternative strategy. We show that less preferred males, who are smaller or produce less loud calls, predominantly use this alternative strategy. Baffling allows these males to increase their call loudness and advertisement range, and attract a higher number of mates. Baffling also allows these males to deceive females into mating for longer durations with them. Our results suggest that the advantage of baffling in terms of sperm transfer is primarily limited to less preferred males, thus maintaining the polymorphism of calling strategies in the population.Impact statementThis study shows that less preferred tree cricket males use an alternative signaling strategy to call louder, thus attracting and mating with otherwise choosy females using deception.

To explore whether gender bias has an effect on publication times, we looked at the elapsed time from submission to acceptance, \Deltat, for female and male first authors submitting to the Astrophysical Journal. For the years 1998 and 2018, around 4000 papers were collected and analyzed to determine first author gender and \Deltat. On average, papers with women as first authors take two weeks longer to be accepted for publishing than papers written by their male counterparts. Although we do not believe a week is a long enough elapsed time to give female authors a disadvantage, it shows that there are gender discrepancies within astrophysics that need to be addressed. We hope by collecting voluntary demographic data from first authors publishing to astrophysical journals that biases such as these can be resolved.

The IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering (T-ASE) wishes to thank the 959 reviewers over the past year who have performed an essential role in maintaining the quality of this publication. T-ASE strives for the 90–90 standard, i.e., 90% of papers should be reviewed within 90 days of submission. The review process starts when the Editor-in-Chief assigns the paper to an Editor, who assigns it to an Associate Editor (AE). The AE then obtains confirmation from 3–5 reviewers, carefully studies the results, and makes a recommendation to the Editor, who then makes a decision that is reported back to the lead author. This review process is very demanding, especially under the time constraints. We have summarized the process under “Guidelines for T-ASE Editors and AEs for Handling Papers” on our website. I am pleased to report that submissions have steadily increased (over 1000 in 2017) and our Impact Factor is now 3.667, a 12.2% increase over last year. As we strive to increase the quality and impact of the journal, we rely on the hard work of our reviewers and members of the Editorial Board. To those dedicated volunteers, and to anyone who may have been inadvertently omitted from the list below, we extend our sincere appreciation.

The lead author documents the promises and pitfalls of doing critical participatory action research (PAR) as a graduate student within traditional institutions. This autoethnographic essay captures the vulnerabilities of the first author as she reflects on the human work that draws her to PAR, details the tensions that surfaced in the daily practices of doing PAR with youth, and addresses unforeseen hurdles that emerged from the ethics review board and the university–school partnership. The piece concludes with an epilogue from Dr. Michelle Fine, a senior scholar in the field of critical PAR, as she responds to the concerns raised in this essay.
