We study the quantum-classical correspondence for systems with interacting spin-particles that are strongly chaotic in the classical limit. This is done in the presence of constants of motion associated with the fixed angular momenta of individual spins. Our analysis of the Lyapunov spectra reveals that the largest Lyapunov exponent agrees with the Lyapunov exponent that determines the local instability of each individual spin moving under the influence of all other spins. Within this picture, we introduce a rigorous and simple test of ergodicity for the spin motion, and use it to identify when classical chaos is both strong and global in phase space. In the quantum domain, our analysis of the Hamiltonian matrix in a proper representation allows us to obtain the conditions for the onset of quantum chaos as a function of the model parameters. From the comparison between the quantum and classical domains, we demonstrate that quantum quantities, such as the local density of states (LDOS) and the shape of the chaotic eigenfunctions written in the non-interacting many-body basis, have well-defined classical counterparts. Another central finding is the relationship between the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy and the width of the LDOS, which is useful for studies of many-body dynamics., 17 pages, 12 figures

In a classically chaotic system that is ergodic, any trajectory will be arbitrarily close to any point of the available phase space after a long time, filling it uniformly. Using Born's rules to connect quantum states with probabilities, one might then expect that all quantum states in the chaotic regime should be uniformly distributed in phase space. This simplified picture was shaken by the discovery of quantum scarring, where some eigenstates are concentrated along unstable periodic orbits. Despite of that, it is widely accepted that most eigenstates of chaotic models are indeed ergodic. Our results show instead that all eigenstates of the chaotic Dicke model are actually scarred. They also show that even the most random states of this interacting atom-photon system never occupy more than half of the available phase space. Topological phases supported by quasi-periodic spin-chain models and their bulk-boundary principles are investigated by numerical and K-theoretic methods. We show that, for both the un-correlated and correlated phases, the operator algebras that generate the Hamiltonians are non-commutative tori, hence the quasi-periodic chains display physics akin to the quantum Hall effect in two and higher dimensions. The robust topological edge modes are found to be strongly shaped by the interaction and, generically, they have hybrid edge-localized and chain-delocalized structures. Our findings lay the foundations for topological spin pumping using the phason of a quasi-periodic pattern as an adiabatic parameter, where selectively chosen quantized bits of magnetization can be transferred from one edge of the chain to the other., Comment: 23 figures

We propose a mechanism to suppress heating in periodically driven many-body quantum systems by employing sufficiently long-range interactions and experimentally relevant initial conditions. The mechanism is robust to local perturbations and does \emph{not} rely on disorder or high driving frequencies. Instead, it makes use of an approximate fragmentation of the many-body spectrum of the non-driven system into bands, with band gaps that grow with the system size. We show that when these systems are driven, there is a regime where \emph{decreasing} the driving frequency \emph{decreases} heating and entanglement build-up. This is demonstrated numerically for a prototypical system of spins in one dimension, but the results can be readily generalized to higher dimensions., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

There is no unique way to quantify the degree of delocalization of quantum states in unbounded continuous spaces. In this work, we explore a recently introduced localization measure that quantifies the portion of the classical phase space occupied by a quantum state. The measure is based on the $\alpha$-moments of the Husimi function and is known as the R\'enyi occupation of order $\alpha$. With this quantity and random pure states, we find a general expression to identify states that are maximally delocalized in phase space. Using this expression and the Dicke model, which is an interacting spin-boson model with an unbounded four-dimensional phase space, we show that the R\'enyi occupations with $\alpha>1$ are highly effective at revealing quantum scars. Furthermore, by analyzing the high moments ($\alpha>1$) of the Husimi function, we are able to identify qualitatively and quantitatively the unstable periodic orbits that scar some of the eigenstates of the model., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures

[EN] Interacting quantum systems in the chaotic domain are at the core of various ongoing studies of many-body physics, ranging from the scrambling of quantum information to the onset of thermalization. We propose a minimum model for chaos that can be experimentally realized with cold atoms trapped in onedimensional multi-well potentials. We explore the emergence of chaos as the number of particles is increased, starting with as few as two, and as the number of wells is increased, ranging from a double well to a multi-well Kronig-Penney-like system. In this way, we illuminate the narrow boundary between integrability and chaos in a highly tunable few-body system. We show that the competition between the particle interactions and the periodic structure of the confining potential reveals subtle indications of quantum chaos for 3 particles, while for 4 particles stronger signatures are seen. As the name indicates, a periodic orbit is a solution for a dynamical system that repeats itself in time. In the regular regime, periodic orbits are stable, while in the chaotic regime, they become unstable. The presence of unstable periodic orbits is directly associated with the phenomenon of quantum scarring, which restricts the degree of delocalization of the eigenstates and leads to revivals in the dynamics. Here, we study the Dicke model in the superradiant phase and identify two sets of fundamental periodic orbits. This experimentally realizable atom-photon model is regular at low energies and chaotic at high energies. We study the effects of the periodic orbits in the structure of the eigenstates in both regular and chaotic regimes and obtain their quantized energies. We also introduce a measure to quantify how much scarred an eigenstate gets by each family of periodic orbits and compare the dynamics of initial coherent states close and away from those orbits., 19 pages, 6 figures (as published)

Isolated many-body quantum systems quenched far from equilibrium can eventually equilibrate, but it is not yet clear how long they take to do so. To answer this question, we use exact numerical methods and analyze the entire evolution, from perturbation to equilibration, of a paradigmatic disordered many-body quantum system in the chaotic regime. We investigate how the equilibration time depends on the system size and observables. Finite-size effects have been a major and justifiable source of concern for studies of many-body localization, and several works have been dedicated to the subject. In this paper, however, we discuss yet another crucial problem that has received much less attention, that of the lack of self-averaging and the consequent danger of reducing the number of random realizations as the system size increases. By taking this into account and considering ensembles with a large number of samples for all system sizes analyzed, we find that the generalized dimensions of the eigenstates of the disordered Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain close to the transition point to localization are described remarkably well by an exact analytical expression derived for the non-interacting Fibonacci lattice, thus providing an additional tool for studies of many-body localization., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

We numerically investigate the minimum number of interacting particles, which is required for the onset of strong chaos in quantum systems on a one-dimensional lattice with short-range and long-range interactions. We consider multiple system sizes which are at least three times larger than the number of particles and find that robust signatures of quantum chaos emerge for as few as 4 particles in the case of short-range interactions and as few as 3 particles for long-range interactions, and without any apparent dependence on the size of the system., 8 pages, 4 figures, SciPost submission

In a disordered system, a quantity is self-averaging when the ratio between its variance for disorder realizations and the square of its mean decreases as the system size increases. Here, we consider a chaotic disordered many-body quantum system and search for a relationship between self-averaging behavior and the properties of the distributions over disorder realizations of various quantities and at different timescales. An exponential distribution, as found for the survival probability at long times, explains its lack of self-averaging, since the mean and the dispersion are equal. Gaussian distributions, however, are obtained for both self-averaging and non-self-averaging quantities. Our studies show also that one can make conclusions about the self-averaging behavior of one quantity based on the distribution of another related quantity. This strategy allows for semianalytical results, and thus circumvents the limitations of numerical scaling analysis, which are restricted to few system sizes., 13 pages, 5 figures

We propose and experimentally measure an entropy that quantifies the volume of correlations among qubits. The experiment is carried out on a nearly isolated quantum system composed of a central spin coupled and initially uncorrelated with 15 other spins. Due to the spin-spin interactions, information flows from the central spin to the surrounding ones forming clusters of multi-spin correlations that grow in time. We design a nuclear magnetic resonance experiment that directly measures the amplitudes of the multi-spin correlations and use them to compute the evolution of what we call correlation R\'enyi entropy. This entropy keeps growing even after the equilibration of the entanglement entropy. We also analyze how the saturation point and the timescale for the equilibration of the correlation R\'enyi entropy depend on the system size., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Despite its importance to experiments, numerical simulations, and the development of theoretical models, self-averaging in many-body quantum systems out of equilibrium remains underinvestigated. Usually, in the chaotic regime, self-averaging is taken for granted. The numerical and analytical results presented here force us to rethink these expectations. They demonstrate that self-averaging properties depend on the quantity and also on the time scale considered. We show analytically that the survival probability in chaotic systems is not self-averaging at any time scale, even when evolved under full random matrices. We also analyze the participation ratio, R\'enyi entropies, the spin autocorrelation function from experiments with cold atoms, and the connected spin-spin correlation function from experiments with ion traps. We find that self-averaging holds at short times for the quantities that are local in space, while at long times, self-averaging applies for quantities that are local in time. It has been shown that, despite being local, a perturbation applied to a single site of the one-dimensional XXZ model is enough to bring this interacting integrable spin-1/2 system to the chaotic regime. Here, we show that this is not unique to this model, but happens also to the Ising model in a transverse field and to the spin-1 Lai-Sutherland chain. The larger the system is, the smaller the amplitude of the local perturbation for the onset of chaos. We focus on two indicators of chaos, the correlation hole, which is a dynamical tool, and the distribution of off-diagonal elements of local observables, which is used in the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis. Both methods avoid spectrum unfolding and can detect chaos even when the eigenvalues are not separated by symmetry sectors., 8 pages, 6 figures

Quantum chaos refers to signatures of classical chaos found in the quantum domain. Recently, it has become common to equate the exponential behavior of out-of-time order correlators (OTOCs) with quantum chaos. The quantum-classical correspondence between the OTOC exponential growth and chaos in the classical limit has indeed been corroborated theoretically for some systems and there are several projects to do the same experimentally. The Dicke model, in particular, which has a regular and a chaotic regime, is currently under intense investigation by experiments with trapped ions. We show, however, that for experimentally accessible parameters, OTOCs can grow exponentially also when the Dicke model is in the regular regime. The same holds for the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model, which is integrable and also experimentally realizable. The exponential behavior in these cases are due to unstable stationary points, not to chaos., 12 pages, 4 figures. (As published)

The self-averaging behavior of interacting many-body quantum systems has been mostly studied at equilibrium. The present paper addresses what happens out of equilibrium, as the increase of the strength of on-site disorder takes the system to the localized phase. We consider two local and two nonlocal quantities of great experimental and theoretical interest. In the delocalized phase, self-averaging depends on the observable and on the timescale, but the picture simplifies substantially when localization is reached. In the localized phase, the local observables become self-averaging at all times while the nonlocal quantities are throughout non-self-averaging. Scrambling in interacting quantum systems out of equilibrium is particularly effective in the chaotic regime. Under time evolution, initially localized information is said to be scrambled as it spreads throughout the entire system. This spreading can be analyzed with the spectral form factor, which is defined in terms of the analytic continuation of the partition function. The latter is equivalent to the survival probability of a thermofield double state under unitary dynamics. Using random matrices from the Gaussian unitary ensemble (GUE) as Hamiltonians for the time evolution, we obtain exact analytical expressions at finite N for the survival probability. Numerical simulations of the survival probability with matrices taken from the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (GOE) are also provided. The GOE is more suitable for our comparison with numerical results obtained with a disordered spin chain with local interactions. Common features between the random matrix and the realistic disordered model in the chaotic regime are identified. The differences that emerge as the spin model approaches a many-body localized phase are also discussed.

We study the quantum-classical correspondence of an experimentally accessible system of interacting bosons in a tilted triple-well potential. With the semiclassical analysis, we get a better understanding of the different phases of the quantum system and how they could be used for quantum information science. In the integrable limits, our analysis of the stationary points of the semiclassical Hamiltonian reveals critical points associated with second-order quantum phase transitions. In the nonintegrable domain, the system exhibits crossovers. Depending on the parameters and quantities, the quantum-classical correspondence holds for very few bosons. In some parameter regions, the ground state is robust (highly sensitive) to changes in the interaction strength (tilt amplitude), which may be of use for quantum information protocols (quantum sensing)., 11 pages, 7 figures

A clever application of nuclear magnetic resonance techniques offers a glimpse at a quantum system driven at high frequency, resulting in Floquet prethermalization — a quasi-steady state that persists for a very long time.

Recent works have shown that the spectroscopic access to highly-excited states provides enough information to characterize transition states in isomerization reactions. Here, we show that the transition state of the bond breaking HCN-HNC isomerization reaction can also be achieved with the two-dimensional limit of the algebraic vibron model. We describe the system's bending vibration with the algebraic Hamiltonian and use its classical limit to characterize the transition state. Using either the coherent state formalism or a recently proposed approach by Baraban et al. [ Science 2015 , 350 , 1338], we obtain an accurate description of the isomerization transition state. In addition, we show that the energy level dynamics and the transition state wave function structure indicate that the spectrum in the vicinity of the isomerization saddle point can be understood in terms of the formalism for excited state quantum phase transitions., 16 pages, 1 figure, and two tables. A major open question in studies of nonequilibrium quantum dynamics is the identification of the time scales involved in the relaxation process of isolated quantum systems that have many interacting particles. We demonstrate that long time scales can be analytically found by analyzing dynamical manifestations of spectral correlations. Using this approach, we show that the Thouless time, $t_{\text{Th}}$, and the relaxation time, $t_{\text{R}}$, increase exponentially with system size. We define $t_{\text{Th}}$ as the time at which the spread of the initial state in the many-body Hilbert space is complete and verify that it agrees with the inverse of the Thouless energy. $t_{\text{Th}}$ marks the point beyond which the dynamics acquire universal features, while relaxation happens later when the evolution reaches a stationary state. In chaotic systems, $t_{\text{Th}}\ll t_{\text{R}}$, while for systems approaching a many-body localized phase, $t_{\text{Th}}\rightarrow t_{\text{R}}$. Our analytical results for $t_{\text{Th}}$ and $t_{\text{R}}$ are obtained for the survival probability, which is a global quantity. We show numerically that the same time scales appear also in the evolution of the spin autocorrelation function, which is an experimental local observable. Quantum systems whose classical counterparts are chaotic typically have highly correlated eigenvalues and level statistics that coincide with those from ensembles of full random matrices. A dynamical manifestation of these correlations comes in the form of the so-called correlation hole, which is a dip below the saturation point of the survival probability's time evolution. In this work, we study the correlation hole in the spin-boson (Dicke) model, which presents a chaotic regime and can be realized in experiments with ultracold atoms and ion traps. We derive an analytical expression that describes the entire evolution of the survival probability and allows us to determine the timescales of its relaxation to equilibrium. This expression shows remarkable agreement with our numerical results. While the initial decay and the time to reach the minimum of the correlation hole depend on the initial state, the dynamics beyond the hole up to equilibration is universal. We find that the relaxation time of the survival probability for the Dicke model increases linearly with system size., 12 pages, 3 figures

We demonstrate analytically and numerically that in isolated quantum systems of many interacting particles, the number of many-body states participating in the evolution after a quench increases exponentially in time, provided the eigenstates are delocalized in the energy shell. The rate of the exponential growth is defined by the width $\Gamma$ of the local density of states (LDOS) and is associated with the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy for systems with a well defined classical limit. In a finite system, the exponential growth eventually saturates due to the finite volume of the energy shell. We estimate the time scale for the saturation and show that it is much larger than $\hbar/\Gamma$. Numerical data obtained for a two-body random interaction model of bosons and for a dynamical model of interacting spin-1/2 particles show excellent agreement with the analytical predictions., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures (as published)

This work shows that dynamical features typical of full random matrices can be observed also in the simple finite one-dimensional (1D) noninteracting Anderson model with nearest neighbor couplings. In the thermodynamic limit, all eigenstates of this model are exponentially localized in configuration space for any infinitesimal onsite disorder strength $W$. But this is not the case when the model is finite and the localization length is larger than the system size $L$, which is a picture that can be experimentally investigated. We analyze the degree of energy-level repulsion, the structure of the eigenstates, and the time evolution of the finite 1D Anderson model as a function of the parameter $\xi \propto (W^2 L)^{-1}$. As $\xi$ increases, all energy-level statistics typical of random matrix theory are observed. The statistics are reflected in the corresponding eigenstates and also in the dynamics. We show that the probability in time to find a particle initially placed on the first site of an open chain decays as fast as in full random matrices and much faster that when the particle is initially placed far from the edges. We also see that at long times, the presence of energy-level repulsion manifests in the form of the correlation hole. In addition, our results demonstrate that the hole is not exclusive to random matrix statistics, but emerges also for $W=0$, when it is in fact deeper., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, version as published

We compare the entire classical and quantum evolutions of the Dicke model in its regular and chaotic domains. This is a paradigmatic interacting spin-boson model of great experimental interest. By studying the classical and quantum survival probabilities of initial coherent states, we identify features of the long-time dynamics that are purely quantum and discuss their impact on the equilibration times. We show that the ratio between the quantum and classical asymptotic values of the survival probability serves as a metric to determine the proximity to a separatrix in the regular regime and to distinguish between two manifestations of quantum chaos: scarring and ergodicity. The exponential growth of the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) has been proposed as a quantum signature of classical chaos. The growth rate is expected to coincide with the classical Lyapunov exponent. This quantum-classical correspondence has been corroborated for the kicked rotor and the stadium billiard, which are one-body chaotic systems. The conjecture has not yet been validated for realistic systems with interactions. We make progress in this direction by studying the OTOC in the Dicke model, where two-level atoms cooperatively interact with a quantized radiation field. For parameters where the model is chaotic in the classical limit, the OTOC increases exponentially in time with a rate that closely follows the classical Lyapunov exponent., 6 pages, 4 figures (as published)

In a recent Letter [PhysRevLett.119.030601 (2017), arXiv:1702.08227], Shiraishi and Mori claim to provide a general method for constructing local Hamiltonians that do not exhibit eigenstate thermalization. We argue that the claim is based on a misunderstanding of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH). More specifically, on the assumption that ETH is valid for the entire Hamiltonian matrix instead of each symmetry sector independently. How many particles are necessary to make a quantum system many-body? To answer this question, we take as reference for the many-body limit a quantum system at half-filling and compare its properties with those of a system with $N$ particles, gradually increasing $N$ from 1. We show that convergence for the static properties of the system with few particles to the many-body limit is fast. For $N \gsim 4$, the density of states is already very close to Gaussian and signatures of many-body quantum chaos, such as level repulsion and fully extended eigenstates, become evident. The dynamics, on the other hand, depend on the initial state and time scale. We present an overview of our studies on the nonequilibrium dynamics of quantum systems that have many interacting particles. Our emphasis is on systems that show strong level repulsion, referred to as chaotic systems. We discuss how full random matrices can guide and support our studies of realistic systems. We show that features of the dynamics can be anticipated from a detailed analysis of the spectrum and the structure of the initial state projected onto the energy eigenbasis. On the other way round, if we only have access to the dynamics, we can use it to infer the properties of the spectrum of the system. Our focus is on the survival probability, but results for other observables, such as the spin density imbalance and Shannon entropy are also mentioned.

In this work we provide an overview of our recent results about the quench dynamics of one-dimensional many-body quantum systems described by spin-1/2 models. To illustrate those general results, here we employ a particular and experimentally accessible initial state, namely the N\'eel state. Both cases are considered: clean chains without any disorder and disordered systems with static random on-site magnetic fields. The quantity used for the analysis is the probability for finding the initial state later in time, the so-called survival probability. At short times, the survival probability may decay faster than exponentially, Gaussian behaviors and even the limit established by the energy-time uncertainty relation are displayed. The dynamics at long times slows down significantly and shows a powerlaw behavior. We review our results for the dynamics of isolated many-body quantum systems described by one-dimensional spin-1/2 models. We explain how the evolution of these systems depends on the initial state and the strength of the perturbation that takes them out of equilibrium; on the Hamiltonian, whether it is integrable or chaotic; and on the onset of multifractal eigenstates that occurs in the vicinity of the transition to a many-body localized phase. We unveil different behaviors at different time scales. We also discuss how information about the spectrum of a many-body quantum system can be extracted by the sole analysis of its time evolution, giving particular attention to the so-called correlation hole. This approach is useful for experiments that routinely study dynamics, but have limited or no direct access to spectroscopy, as experiments with cold atoms and trapped ions.

We investigate the phenomenon of spatial many-body localization (MBL) through pairwise correlation measures based on one and two-point correlation functions. The system considered is the Heisenberg spin-1/2 chain with exchange interaction $J$ and random onsite disorder of strength $h$. As a representative pairwise correlation measure obtained from one-point functions only, we use global entanglement. Through its finite size scaling analysis, we locate the MBL critical point at $h_{c}/J = 3.8$. As for measures involving two-point functions, we analyze pairwise geometric classical, quantum, and total correlations. Similarly to what happens for continuous quantum phase transitions, it is the derivatives of these two-point correlation measures that identify the MBL critical point, which is found to be in the range $h_{c}/J \in \left[3,4\right]$. We study numerically and analytically the quench dynamics of isolated many-body quantum systems. Using full random matrices from the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble, we obtain analytical expressions for the evolution of the survival probability, density imbalance, and out-of-time-ordered correlator. They are compared with numerical results for a one-dimensional disordered model with two-body interactions and shown to bound the decay rate of this realistic system. Power-law decays are seen at intermediate times and dips below the infinite time averages (correlation holes) occur at long times for all three quantities when the system exhibits level repulsion. The fact that these features are shared by both the random matrix and the realistic disordered model indicates that they are generic to nonintegrable interacting quantum systems out of equilibrium. Assisted by the random matrix analytical results, we propose expressions that describe extremely well the dynamics of the realistic chaotic system at different time scales., 5 pages, 3 figures

A main distinguishing feature of non-Hermitian quantum mechanics is the presence of exceptional points (EPs). They correspond to the coalescence of two energy levels and their respective eigenvectors. Here, we use the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model as a testbed to explore the strong connection between EPs and the onset of excited state quantum phase transitions (ESQPTs). We show that for finite systems, the exact degeneracies (EPs) obtained with the non-Hermitian LMG Hamiltonian continued into the complex plane are directly linked with the avoided crossings that characterize the ESQPTs for the real (physical) LMG Hamiltonian. The values of the complex control parameter $\alpha$ that lead to the EPs approach the real axis as the system size $N\rightarrow \infty$. This happens for both, the EPs that are close to the separatrix that marks the ESQPT and also for those that are far away, although in the latter case, the rate the imaginary part of $\alpha$ reduces to zero as $N$ increases is smaller. None of the two approaches represent actual realistic systems, but they serve as references for the studies of these ones. We take the second path and obtain analytical expressions for the survival probability, density imbalance, and out-of-time-ordered correlator. Using these findings, we then propose an approximate expression that matches very well numerical results for the evolution of realistic finite quantum systems that are strongly chaotic and quenched far from equilibrium. In the case of the survival probability, the expression proposed covers all different time scales, from the moment the system is taken out of equilibrium to the moment it reaches a new equilibrium.
