The article focuses on the condition of the woolen industry in Canada in 2003. It is difficult to get the real extent of the woolen industry of Canada than of the cotton back in 1910, as there are so many very small establishment throughout the country and a great deal of hosiery, and others, are made in private families. In the country districts of Quebec the total goods produced annually from the old-fashioned spinning wheel would be surprising to those not acquainted with the province, and in Ontario a good deal of hosiery and such goods are made up on family knitting machines. It may be stated that the woolen and worsted industries of Great Britain employ over 300,000 people, Germany 200,000 and the U.S. about 160,000, so that if the Canadian industry employed only 9,334 would seem small in comparison. The existence of small mills will probably constitute one of the difficulties of the hosiery and woolen goods trade in Canada. They are multiplying fast, and while they will thus be able to affect the large establishments they will never be able to produce a class of goods suited to the general market, since, for the last five years, the tendency has been towards and increased demand for the finer grades of woolen goods turned out by the large factories.

This article discusses the state of evolution being undergone by the textile industry. During the October International Textile Machinery Association (ITMA) 2003 Fair in Birmingham, Alabama, it was quite evident that the textile industry had transferred a good part of its activities in Asia. In fact, nearly 30 percent of its visitors had come from different countries such as, Turkey, India, Pakistan, China, Iran, Korea, Japan and others from that part of the world. Although visitors coming from the other side of the world were as numerous, it was easy to detect which of them came to purchase future technology in all its different stages of mass production, from fibers to dyeing and finishing of textiles. This obviousness was even more apparent while touring the different sections of the fair. The number of textile machinery manufacturers established in those countries continues to increase and the number of joint ventures between textile machinery manufacturers from Europe and Asia has been constantly expanding. In other words, people and enterprises do adjust to change and they do follow the market's evolution. The people in the Canadian textile industry also adjust to the changes.
