Acute physical exercise increases reactive oxygen species in skeletal muscle, leading to tissue damage and fatigue. Molecular hydrogen ([H.sub.2]) acts as a therapeutic antioxidant directly or indirectly by inducing antioxidative enzymes. Here, we examined the effects of drinking [H.sub.2] water ([H.sub.2]-infused water) on psychometric fatigue and endurance capacity in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled fashion. In Experiment 1, all participants drank only placebo water in the first cycle ergometer exercise session, and for comparison they drank either [H.sub.2] water or placebo water 30 min before exercise in the second examination. In these healthy non-trained participants (n = 99), psychometric fatigue judged by visual analogue scales was significantly decreased in the [H.sub.2] group after mild exercise. When each group was divided into 2 subgroups, the subgroup with higher visual analogue scale values was more sensitive to the effect of [H.sub.2]. In Experiment 2, trained participants (n = 60) were subjected to moderate exercise by cycle ergometer in a similar way as in Experiment 1, but exercise was performed 10 min after drinking [H.sub.2] water. Endurance and fatigue were significantly improved in the [H.sub.2] group as judged by maximal oxygen consumption and Borg's scale, respectively. Taken together, drinking [H.sub.2] water just before exercise exhibited anti-fatigue and endurance effects. Ici, nous avons etudie les effets de l'[H.sub.2] dans l'eau potable ([H.sub.2] infuse dans de l'eau) sur la fatigue psychometrique et la capacite d'endurance dans un modele avec repartition aleatoire, a double insu et controle par placebo. Apres avoir divise chacun des groupes en deux sous-groupes, les participants du sous-groupe presentant les valeurs les plus elevees aux echelles visuelles analogues etaient plus sensibles a l'effet de l'[H.sub.2]. Dans l'experience 2, des participants entraines (n = 60) etaient soumis a un exercice modere sur bicyclette ergometrique de maniere semblable a dans l'experience 1, mais l'exercice physique etait effectue 10 minutes apres avoir bu de l'eau [H.sub.2]. [H.sub.2] has been clinically demonstrated to provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, which makes it an attractive agent in exercise medicine. Although exercise provides a multiplicity of benefits including decreased risk of disease, it can also have detrimental effects. For example, chronic high-intensity exercise in elite athletes, or sporadic bouts of exercise (i.e., noxious exercise) in untrained individuals, result in similar pathological factors such as inflammation, oxidation, and cellular damage that arise from and result in disease. Paradoxically, exercise-induced pro-inflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species largely mediate the benefits of exercise. Ingestion of conventional antioxidants and antiinflammatories often impairs exercise-induced training adaptations. Disease and noxious forms of exercise promote redox dysregulation and chronic inflammation, changes that are mitigated by [H.sub.2] administration. Beneficial exercise and [H.sub.2] administration promote cytoprotective hormesis, mitochondrial biogenesis, ATP production, increased [NAD.sup.+]/NADH ratio, cytoprotective phase II enzymes, heat-shock proteins, sirtuins, etc. We review the biomedical effects of exercise and those of [H.sub.2], and we propose that hydrogen may act as an exercise mimetic and redox adaptogen, potentiate the benefits from beneficial exercise, and reduce the harm from noxious exercise. However, more research is warranted to elucidate the potential ergogenic and therapeutic effects of [H.sub.2] in exercise medicine. Uncontrolled production of oxygen and nitrogen radicals results in oxidative and nitrosative stresses that impair cellular functions and have been regarded as causative common denominators of many pathological processes. In this review, we report on the beneficial effects of molecular hydrogen in scavenging radicals in an artificial system of *OH formation. As a proof of principle, we also demonstrate that in rat hearts in vivo, administration of molecular hydrogen led to a significant increase in superoxide dismutase as well as pAKT, a cell survival signaling molecule. Irradiation of the rats caused a significant increase in lipid peroxidation, which was mitigated by pre-treatment of the animals with molecular hydrogen. The nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 is regarded as an important regulator of oxyradical homeostasis, as well as it supports the functional integrity of cells, particularly under conditions of oxidative stress. We suggest that the beneficial effects of molecular hydrogen may be through the activation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 pathway that promotes innate antioxidants and reduction of apoptosis, as well as inflammation. Dans cet article de synthese, nous rapportons les effets avantageux de l'hydrogene moleculaire sur les radicaux piegeurs dans un systeme artificiel de creation d'ions superoxydes (* OH). Comme preuve de concept, nous avons aussi montre que, dans le coeur de rat in vivo, l'administration de l'hydrogene moleculaire menait a une augmentation notable des taux de superoxyde dismutase ainsi que de pAKT, une molecule de signalisation de la survie cellulaire. L'irradiation des rats a entraine une augmentation notable de la peroxydation lipidique, que nous mitigions en administrant precedemment de l'hydrogene moleculaire chez les animaux. Background: The global COVID-19 pandemic has significantly influenced athletes worldwide. Objectives: This research aims to investigate the effects of a 4-week aerobic exercise program on athletic performance in both recovered and uninfected COVID-19 athletes during the post-COVID-19 period. Methods: Fourteen male student-athletes aged 18 - 25 years fromImamKhomeini International University participated in this study. The participants comprised 7 recovered COVID-19 athletes and 7 athletes with no prior COVID-19 infection. The study employed a pre-test/post-test design conducted in 2 phases. During the pre and post-test phases, participants underwent baseline assessments of athletic performance, including maximum oxygen consumption (VO2 max) and anaerobic power. Subsequently, the participants engaged in a 4-week aerobic exercise intervention. Pre- and post-intervention outcomes within groups were compared using paired t-tests, while independent t-tests were utilized for comparisons between the recovered COVID-19 athlete group and the uninfected athlete group. Results: Independent t-tests demonstrated significant increases inVO2 maxand peak power after 4 weeks of aerobic exercise in both the recovered COVID-19 group (P = 0.001, P = 0.0001) and the uninfected COVID-19 group (P = 0.012, P = 0.001). However, dependent t-tests revealed a significant difference between the recovered COVID-19 group and the uninfected COVID-19 group in the post-test of VO2 max (P = 0.044) and peak power (P = 0.001). Conclusions: This study indicates that a 4-week aerobic exercise regimen can improve athletic performance in both recovered and uninfected COVID-19 athletes. However, recovered COVID-19 athletes exhibited a notably slower rate of improvement compared to their uninfected counterparts. Therefore, it is recommended that, in addition to aerobic exercise, recovered athletes integrate supplementary strategies to optimize their return-to-sport timeline and maximize performance recovery. Writing assignments are typically incorporated into chemistry courses in an attempt to enhance the learning of chemistry or to teach technical writing to chemistry majors. This work addresses the development of chemistry-major writing skills by focusing on the rigorous guidelines and conventions associated with the preparation of a journal article. In an attempt to reproduce the entire process associated with the writing of a peer-reviewed journal article (i.e., designing an experiment, collecting data, modifying an experiment, evaluating and interpreting data, and communicating results) kitchen chemistry projects were employed. These projects facilitated the development of student work ownership and better simulated a journal-article writing experience in comparison to laboratory reports and other conventional options. Student written work was submitted to the in-house journal "The Journal of Kitchen Chemistry" for publication. Students responded favorably to the course structure and the kitchen chemistry project concept. Complete course structure, kitchen chemistry project guidelines, journal-article requirements, and survey results are presented.

The authors of the 'Discussion' (Falster et al. 2021) have responded to our article entitled: 'Drinking hydrogen water enhances endurance and relieves psychometric fatigue: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study'. Hydrogen ([H.sub.2]) medicine is being developed as an orthodox science. In this Reply, we would like to elaborate on the effects of [H.sub.2]-infused water and the scientific understanding of [H.sub.2] medicine and then address the criticism by Falster et al. (2021). Our paper is limited to stating statistically significant results obtained by the commendable experimental methods. Our study found that [H.sub.2] supplementation in certain groups statistically improved maximum oxygen consumption (V[O.sub.2] max), visual analog scale (VAS), and Borg rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and it is these findings in conjunction with other clinical studies that support the finding that [H.sub.2] can enhance endurance and relieve psychometric fatigue. It adds to the growing body of clinical literature that [H.sub.2] has beneficial effects in the daily life of healthy people. Finally, Falster et al. (2021) indicated possible disadvantages of antioxidant supplementation; however, the physiochemical properties and biological effects of [H.sub.2] differ from conventional antioxidants., Introduction Falster et al. Alpha Hope is a dietary supplement containing pyrroloquinoline quinone and elemental magnesium, which produces molecular hydrogen (H2 gas) when dissolved in water. We determined the impact of Alpha Hope on Nrf-2, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator (PGC-1α), and citrate synthase (CS) activity in C2C12 myoblasts. Alpha Hope was titrated to three concentrations of pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ) (10 nM, 100 nM, 1000 nM) and treated on C2C12 for 48 h. Nrf-2 and PGC-1α levels were measured using Western blot analysis. CS activity was measured according to previously described methods. Treatment significantly increased Nrf-2 and PGC-1α protein levels in C2C12 myoblasts, with no change for CS. For Nrf-2, values for both the 100 nM (p = 0.046) and 1000 nM (p = 0.011) concentrations were higher than control. For PGC-1α, values for both the 100 nM (p = 0.039) and 1000 nM (p = 0.017) concentrations were higher than control. In a small human pilot study, subjects consumed the Alpha Hope product daily for four weeks, with no adverse effects, with some subjects noted as "responders" to treatment. Alpha Hope can significantly increase both Nrf-2 and PGC-1α in a concentration-dependent manner. Healthy men and women who ingest the product daily can do so without adverse effects.
