Abstract

Rapidly growing internet traffic volume is the major driving force behind the development of optically-transparent and ultrahigh-capacity photonic packet-switching networks. In such networks, the packet routing decision at each router is made by sequentially correlating an incoming packet header address with addresses in all entries of the router's look-up routing table. The routing task is achieved in the optical domain using all-optical logic gates and optical correlator technologies which have been predominantly replacing the existing low-speed electronic processing devices. Nevertheless when a network is expanded, a larger routing table is required thus exponentially increasing header processing time, which results in the increases in routing latency and complexity. This research aims to significantly reduce the size of the routing table and the number of optical devices required in a router by mapping both the packet header address and the look-up routing table entries into the pulse-position-modulation format, where more than one address could be located in a single entry of a new pulse-position routing table. By simply carrying out a single correlation of the packet header address with pulse- position routing table entries, the router can instantly obtain the routing decision, thus significantly reducing the processing time and neglecting the gain recovery time in existing optical logic gates. The structure of the pulse-position routing table also offers flexibility in the transmission mode including unicast, multicast or broadcast embedded in the optical (physical) layer. In the thesis, a new router based on the pulse-position¬modulation scheme will be introduced. Essential router modules including high on-off contrast-ratio clock extraction, pulse position routing table, header processing and optical switch are proposed and analysed. In addition, the thesis investigates and improves the switching window profile and residual crosstalk performance of the all- optical Mach-Zelmder switches as a building block for the implementation of the above router modules. A number of new variants of Mach-Zehnder-based switches are also introduced to enhance switching inter-output contrast ratio and reduce the complexity in multiple-channel OTDM demultiplexing.

Abstract

In this paper, three MAC protocols, EE-MAC, CF-MAC and OD-MAC, are proposed. EE-MAC incorporates emergency communication and allows immediate channel access for emergency traffic. CF-MAC compensates regulatory and open-loop control traffic and introduces a prioritized access for high priority nodes. It also allows nodes with critical data to reserve communication slots using control channel. Whereas OD-MAC presents a deadline based dynamic scheduler which ensures timely delivery of time-critical information. The paper presents mathematical modelling of the proposed protocols. For evaluation purposes, the performance of the proposed protocols is compared to IEEE 802.15.4e LLDN. The results show that the proposed protocols offer up to 92% reduction in delay in emergency communications at the cost of 5% to 15% increase in delay of time-insensitive data. A 60% and 85% reduction was observed in the channel access delay for regulatory and open-loop control traffic respectively along with notable improvements in communications reliability.

Abstract

Machine based analysis and prediction systems are widely used for diagnosis of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). However, lower accuracy of existing techniques and lack of post diagnosis monitoring systems limit the scope of such studies. In this paper, a novel machine learning based diagnosis and monitoring of AD-like diseases is proposed. The AD-like diseases diagnosis process is accomplished by analysing the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans using deep learning and is followed by an activity monitoring framework to monitor the subjects’ activities of daily living using body worn inertial sensors. The activity monitoring provides an assistive framework in daily life activities and evaluates vulnerability of the patients based on the activity level. The AD diagnosis results show up to 82% improvement in comparison to well-known existing techniques. Moreover, above 95% accuracy is achieved to classify the activities of daily living which is quite encouraging in terms of monitoring the activity profile of the subject.

Abstract

Abstract Background This study investigated the relationship between dental occlusion and arm strength; in particular, the imbalance in the jaw can cause loss in arm strength phenomenon. One of the goals of this study was to record the maximum forces that the subjects can resist against the pull-down force on their hands while biting a spacer of adjustable height on the right or left side of the jaw. Then EMG measurement was used to determine the EMG-Force relationship of the jaw, neck and arms muscles. This gave us useful insights on the arms strength loss due to the biomechanical effects of the imbalance in the jaw mechanism. Methods In this study to determine the effects of the imbalance in the jaw to the strength of the arms, we conducted experiments with a pool of 20 healthy subjects of both genders. The subjects were asked to resist a pull down force applied on the contralateral arm while biting on a firm spacer using one side of the jaw. Four different muscles – masseter muscles, deltoid muscles, bicep muscles and trapezoid muscles – were involved. Integrated EMG (iEMG) and Higuchi fractal dimension (HFD) were used to analyze the EMG signals. Results The results showed that (1) Imbalance in the jaw causes loss of arm strength contra-laterally; (2) The loss is approximately a linear function of the height of the spacers. Moreover, the iEMG showed the intensity of muscle activities decreased when the degrees of jaw imbalance increased (spacer thickness increased). In addition, the tendency of Higuchi fractal dimension decreased for all muscles. Conclusions This finding indicates that muscle fatigue and the decrease in muscle contraction level leads to the loss of arm strength.

42. Dynamic Priority Based Reliable Real-Time Communications for Infrastructure-Less Networks

Abstract

This paper proposes a dynamic priority system at medium access control (MAC) layer to schedule time sensitive and critical communications in infrastructure-less wireless networks. Two schemes, priority enabled MAC (PE-MAC) and optimized PE-MAC are proposed to ensure real-time and reliable data delivery in emergency and feedback systems. These schemes use a dynamic priority mechanism to offer improved network reliability and timely communication for critical nodes. Both schemes offer a notable improvement in comparison to the IEEE 802.15.4e low-latency deterministic networks. To ensure more predictable communication reliability, two reliability centric schemes, quality-ensured scheme (QES) and priority integrated QES, are also proposed. These schemes maintain a pre-specified successful packet delivery rate, hence improving the overall network reliability and guaranteed channel access.

Abstract

Autonomous driving technology has been regarded as a promising solution to reduce road accidents and traffic congestion, as well as to optimize the usage of fuel and lane. However, one of the main challenges in autonomous driving is a limited sensing from single vehicle that causes warning and dead-lock situation. The network management in Vehicular network is challenging and demands mobility, location awareness, high reliability and low latency of data traffic which are not feasible or efficiently implemented with today’s network architecture. In this paper, we propose the novel communication architecture for vehicular network with Fifth generation Mobile Networks (5G) and SDN technologies to gain more flexibility and support multiple core networks for vehicular networks and to tackle the potential challenges raised by the autonomous driving vehicles.

Abstract

Underwater Acoustic Communications (UWAC) is an emerging technology in the field of underwater communications, and it is challenging because of the signal attenuation of the sound waves. Multiple Input and Multiple-Output (MIMO) is introduced in UWAC because of its support in enhancing the data throughput even under the conditions of interference, signal fading, and multipath. The paper presents the concept and analysis of 2x2 MIMO UWAC systems that uses a 4-QAM spatial modulation scheme thus minimizing the decoding complexity and overcoming the Inter Channel Interference (IChI). Bit Error Rate (BER) investigation is carried out over different link distances under acoustic Line of Sight (LOS). The utilization of Zero Forcing (ZF) and Vertical-Bell Laboratories Layered Space-Time (VBLAST) equalizers, which estimates the transmitted data proves a success of removing Inter Symbol Interference (ISI). The ISI caused due to multipath effect and scattering in UWAC can be reduced by iterative process considered in VBLAST. A study is made on how the distance between the transmitter and the receiver and the Doppler Effect has its impact on the performance of the system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
