Le rapport sur le changement climatique en Nouvelle- Aquitaine constitue, un peu moins de 5 ans après, une suite au rapport sur « le changement climatique en Aquitaine » paru en 2013 – également diffusé par la Région Aquitaine sous le titre « Prévoir pour Agir ». Ce deuxième volume n’efface pas le premier, il le complète… et il ajoute aussi une large quantité d’informations très diverses et difficiles à synthétiser pour le lecteur. Nous avons donc voulu faciliter la lecture de ce document en offrant plusieurs manières d’y accéder. Dans sa version complète, le rapport AcclimaTerra sera probablement lu le plus souvent chapitre par chapitre, à la manière d’une encyclopédie. C’est une approche nécessaire pour comprendre de manière précise sur quoi se fondent réellement les conclusions propres à chaque domaine. Mais il est aussi nécessaire de considérer les différents changements qui peuvent se produire sur une région comme la Nouvelle-Aquitaine de manière globale, et de voir la façon dont ils s’imbriquent les uns avec les autres pour décrire l’évolution climatique et environnementale de cette région comme celle d’un système complexe, hétérogène mais interdépendant. Bien sûr rien ne remplace la lecture patiente et détaillée de tous les chapitres. Mais les pages qui suivent permettent d’appréhender de manière plus facile l’ensemble des problèmes auxquels sera confrontée la Nouvelle-Aquitaine, et donc le contexte général dans lequel devront se prendre des décisions cruciales pour l’avenir de la région.

Ce rapport sur le changement climatique en Nouvelle- Aquitaine constitue, un peu moins de 5 ans après, une suite au rapport sur « le changement climatique en Aquitaine » paru en 2013 – également diffusé par la Région Aquitaine sous le titre « Prévoir pour Agir ». Au total plus de 370 personnes auront été impliquées dans la rédaction de l’un ou l’autre de ces rapports, et mon premier souci est de les remercier toutes : cette mobilisation collective importante, la variété des disciplines scientifiques impliquées dans la réflexion que portent ces deux volumes, la fidélité à un travail qui s’inscrit dans la durée, qui a demandé du temps et des efforts, font le caractère unique de cette démarche. Ce deuxième rapport complète le premier. Il ne l’efface pas. Mais il s’inscrit dans un contexte qui a changé : à l’Aquitaine a succédé la Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Cette extension territoriale amène d’abord des paysages nouveaux : une zone littorale qui a presque doublé, des marais aménagés par l’homme, des paysages de moyenne montagne qui n’ont pas d’équivalent dans les Pyrénées, une agriculture différente… Elle amène aussi des Universités nouvelles, des lieux de médiation scientifique, des compétences différentes. Il a fallu se réorganiser : c’est ainsi qu’est né le Comité AcclimaTerra, le comité scientifique qui a porté ce travail. Sollicités après consultation des présidents d’Université, ses membres ont permis de créer un espace de diversité à la fois disciplinaire et géographique, à la mesure de la diversité des enjeux du changement climatique sur ce large territoire.

Impacts of the main South American orographic structures (the Andes, the Brazilian Plateau and the Guiana shield) on the regional climate and associated global teleconnection are investigated through numerical experiments in which some of these features are suppressed. Simulations are performed with a ‘‘two-way nesting’’ system coupling interactively the regional and global versions of the LMDZ4 atmospheric general circulation model. At regional scale, the simulations confirm previous studies, showing that both the Andes and the Brazilian Plateau exert a control on the position and strength of the South Atlantic convergence zone (SACZ), mainly through their impact on the low-level jet and the coastal branch of the subtropical anticyclones. The northern topography of South America appears to be crucial to determine the leading mode of rainfall variability in eastern South America, which manifests itself as a dipole-like pattern between Southeastern South America and the SACZ region. The suppression of South America orography also shows global-scale effects, corresponding to an adjustment of the global circulation system. Changes in atmospheric circulation and precipitation are found in remote areas on the globe, being the consequences of various teleconnection mechanisms. When the Brazilian Plateau and the Andes are suppressed, there is a decrease of precipitation in the SACZ region, associated with a weakening of the large-scale ascendance. Changes are described in terms of anomalies in the Walker circulation, meridional displacements of the mid-latitude jet stream, Southern annular mode anomalies and modifications of Rossby wave train teleconnection processes. International audience; The size distribution of moist regions in the tropical atmosphere exhibits two modes of organization, one at synoptic scales and the other at planetary scales. We show the existence of these two modes in two data sets: column-integrated precipitable water and outgoing long-wave radiation. A simple two-column model of radiation and convection in the Tropics helps interpret the presence of these two modes. The coupling between radiative effects and low-level atmospheric dynamics provides a plausible mechanism for scale selection.

International audience; [1] We study the response of the land biosphere to climate change by coupling a climate general circulation model to a global carbon cycle model. This coupled model was forced by observed CO 2 emissions for the 1860-1990 period and by the IPCC SRES-A2 emission scenario for the 1991-2100 period. During the historical period, our simulated Net Primary Production (NPP) and net land uptake (NEP) are comparable to the observations in term of trend and variability. By the end of the 21st century, we show that the global NEP is reduced by 56% due to the climate change. In the tropics, increasing temperature, through an increase of evapotranspiration, acts to reduce the soil water content, which leads to a 80% reduction of net land CO 2 uptake. As a consequence, tropical carbon storage saturates by the end of the simulation, some regions becoming sources of CO 2. On the contrary, in northern high latitudes, increasing temperature stimulates the land biosphere by lengthening the growing season by about 18 days by 2100 which in turn leads to a NEP increase of 11%. Overall, the negative climate impact in the tropics is much larger than the positive impact simulated in the extratropics, therefore, climate change reduce the global land carbon uptake. This constitutes a positive feedback in the climate-carbon cycle system.
