Yet its impacts on ecosystem services remain uncertain because pervasive interactions between grazing pressure, climate, soil properties, and biodiversity may occur but have never been addressed simultaneously. Using a standardized survey at 98 sites across six continents, we show that interactions between grazing pressure, climate, soil, and biodiversity are critical to explain the delivery of fundamental ecosystem services across drylands worldwide. Increasing grazing pressure reduced ecosystem service delivery in warmer and speciespoor drylands, whereas positive effects of grazing were observed in colder and species-rich areas. Considering interactions between grazing and local abiotic and biotic factors is key for understanding the fate of dryland ecosystems under climate change and increasing human pressure. Abstract

Facilitation is an interaction where one species (the benefactor) positively impacts another (the beneficiary). However, the reciprocal effects of beneficiaries on their benefactors are typically only documented using short‐term datasets. We use Azorella selago, a cushion plant species and benefactor, and a co‐occurring grass species, Agrostis magellanica, on sub‐Antarctic Marion Island, comparing cushion plants and the grasses growing on them over a 13‐year period using a correlative approach. We additionally compare the feedback effect of A. magellanica on A. selago identified using our long‐term dataset with data collected from a single time period. We hypothesized that A. selago size and vitality would be negatively affected by A. magellanica cover and that the effect of A. magellanica on A. selago would become more negative with increasing beneficiary cover and abiotic‐severity, due to, e.g. more intense competition for resources. We additionally hypothesized that A. magellanica cover would increase more on cushion plants with greater dead stem cover, since dead stems do not inhibit grass colonization or growth. The relationship between A. magellanica cover and A. selago size and vitality was not significant in the long‐term dataset, and the feedback effect of A. magellanica on A. selago did not vary significantly with altitude or aspect; however, data from a single time period did not consistently identify this same lack of correlation. Moreover, A. selago dead stem cover was not significantly related to an increase in A. magellanica cover over the long term; however, we observed contrasting results from short‐term datasets. Long‐term datasets may, therefore, be more robust (and practical) for assessing beneficiary feedback effects than conventional approaches, particularly when benefactors are slow‐growing. For the first time using a long‐term dataset, we show a lack of physical cost to a benefactor species in a facilitative interaction, in contrast to the majority of short‐term studies. Abstract

Several factors may drive bird nest‐site selection, including predation risk, resource availability, weather conditions and interaction with other individuals. Understanding the drivers affecting where birds nest is important for conservation planning, especially where environmental change may alter the distribution of suitable nest‐sites. This study investigates which environmental variables affect nest‐site selection by the Wandering Albatross Diomedea exulans, the world's largest pelagic bird. Here, wind characteristics are quantitatively investigated as a driver of nest‐site selection in surface‐nesting birds, in addition to several topographical variables, vegetation and geological characteristics. Nest locations from three different breeding seasons on sub‐Antarctic Marion Island were modelled to assess which environmental factors affect nest‐site selection. Elevation was the most important determinant of nest‐site selection, with Wandering Albatrosses only nesting at low elevations. Distance from the coast and terrain roughness were also important predictors, with nests more generally found close to the coast and in flatter terrain, followed by wind velocity, which showed a hump‐shaped relationship with the probability of nest occurrence. Nests occurred more frequently on coastal vegetation types, and were absent from polar desert vegetation (generally above c. 500 m elevation). Of the variables that influence Wandering Albatross nest location, both vegetation type and wind characteristics are likely to be influenced by climate change, and have already changed over the last 50 years. As a result, the availability of suitable nest‐sites needs to be considered in light of future climate change, in addition to the impacts that these changes will have on foraging patterns and prey distribution. More broadly, these results provide insights into how a wide range of environmental variables, including wind, can affect nest‐site selection of surface‐nesting seabirds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

47. Back to School - the Impact of Short Timeframe Student Case Studies on Projects and Educational Programs in the Context of Urban FM

Abstract

Background and Aim: This paper looks at the degree to which three student projects had an impact on the cases and educational programmes related to this summer school. The aim is to look at the degree to which it is possible for a short-term workshop to create tangible and practical outcomes for a real case study in the context of Urban FM. Methods/ Methodology: The data collection for this paper consists not just of preparatory desk research, but also a descriptive analysis of the case study outcomes of the students. This is done by looking at outcome of the field work and student presentations, and how they could potentially contribute to their projects in comparison to longer term initiatives. This will also supported by data in the form of survey and interviews with participating educators and students. Results/ Outcomes: The study resulted in the substantial outcomes from the students. This was not just in the form of data, but also in the form of materials for inclusive citizen participation as well 3d models and conceptual outcomes. Whilst these outcomes impressed the educators in terms of their speed of completion, challenged with post study engagement with the case study holders made the outcomes on cases themselves in the longer term difficult to implement. Practical/ Social Implementation: This study has offered possible means by which to improve the involvement of citizens in these urban development projects using the mechanisms and materials created during the workshop. The data collected and conceptual aspects could also offer perspectives on urban development projects in the form of inspired reimagining.
