- Abstract
The European Space Agency's Planck satellite, launched on 14 May 2009, is the third-generation space experiment in the field of cosmic microwave background (CMB) research. It will image the anisotropies of the CMB over the whole sky, with unprecedented sensitivity (${{\Delta T}\over T}$ ~ 2 × 10-6) and angular resolution (~5 arcmin). Planck will provide a major source of information relevant to many fundamental cosmological problems and will test current theories of the early evolution of the Universe and the origin of structure. It will also address a wide range of areas of astrophysical research related to the Milky Way as well as external galaxies and clusters of galaxies. The ability of Planck to measure polarization across a wide frequency range (30-350 GHz), with high precision and accuracy, and over the whole sky, will provide unique insight, not only into specific cosmological questions, but also into the properties of the interstellar medium. This paper is part of a series which describes the technical capabilities of the Planck scientific payload. It is based on the knowledge gathered during the on-ground calibration campaigns of the major subsystems, principally its telescope and its two scientific instruments, and of tests at fully integrated satellite level. It represents the best estimate before launch of the technical performance that the satellite and its payload will achieve in flight. In this paper, we summarise the main elements of the payload performance, which is described in detail in the accompanying papers. In addition, we describe the satellite performance elements which are most relevant for science, and provide an overview of the plans for scientific operations and data analysis.

- Abstract

Poster presented on behalf of the Super B accelerator team -TUPEB003; International audience; The SuperB project [1] is an international effort aiming at building in Italy a very high luminosity e+e- (1036 cm-2 sec-1) asymmetric collider at the Y(4S) energy in the cm. The accelerator design has been extensively studied and changed during the past year. The present design, based on the new collision scheme, with large Piwinski angle and the use of “crab waist” sextupoles already successfully tested at the DAPHNE Phi -Factory at LNF Frascati [2], provides larger flexibility, better dynamic aperture and spin manipulation sections in the Low Energy Ring (LER) for longitudinal polarization of the electron beam at the Interaction Point (IP). The Interaction Region (IR) has been further optimized in terms of apertures and reduced backgrounds in the detector. The injector complex design has been also updated. A summary of the project status will be presented in this paper.

WE6PFP075; International audience; Since several years, the vertical beam emittance measured in the Extraction Line (EXT) of the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at KEK, has been significantly larger than that measured in the damping ring (DR) itself. The EXT line that transports the beam to the ATF2 Final Focus beam line has been rebuilt, but the extraction itself remains in most part unchanged, with the extracted beam transported off- axis horizontally in two of the quadrupoles, beyond the linear region for one of them. A few other nearby magnets have also modelled or measured non-linearity. In case of a residual vertical beam displacement, this can result in increased vertical emittance through coupling between the two transverse planes. Tracking studies as well as measurements have been carried out to study this effect and the induced sensitivity of beam optical parameters to the trajectory at injection, in view of deriving tolerances for reproducible and stable operation.

After extraction from the ATF Damping Ring, the linear beam optics is matched before injection into a section dedicated to beam diagnostics. Experimentally, vertical emittances in this section have since several years been observed to be larger than expected, byfactors of two to three, with a seemingly strong dependence on intensity. This has motivated studies of the possible sources of emittance growth. One of these is thought to be the non-linearity experienced by the beam during the extraction, as it is transported off-axis through several magnets which are shared with the Damping Ring. Such non-linearity can generate a sensitivity of the emittance to the orbit parameters in the extraction, which would be very undesirable in the newly built ATF2 final focus system, where the same extraction line is used. In this report, a detailed calculation of the modeling of these shared magnets is presented, in order to quantify the magnitudes of both the linear and non-linear fields to be used in the evaluation of the optics and in tracking simulations of the performance of the extraction line.

http://cern.ch/AccelConf/e08/papers/mopp005.pdf; International audience; The present baseline configuration of the ILC has a 14 mrad crossing angle between the beams at the interaction point. This allows easier extraction of the beams after col- lisions, but imposes on the other hand more constraints on the control of the beams prior to colliding them. More- over, some limitations to physics capabilities arise, in par- ticular because of the degraded very forward electromag- netic detector hermeticity and because calibration proce- dures for (gaseous) tracking detectors become more com- plex. To mitigate these problems, alternative configurations with very small crossing angles are studied. A new version of the 2 mrad layout was designed last year, based on sim- pler concepts and assumptions. The emphasis of this new scheme was to satisfy specifications with as few and feasi- ble magnets as possible, in order to reduce costs.

accelconf.web.cern.ch/accelconf/e08/papers/mopp003.pdf; International audience; Since several years, the vertical beam emittance mea- red in the Extraction Line (EXT) of the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at KEK, that will transport the electron beam from the ATF Damping Ring (DR) to the future ATF2 Final Focus beam line, is significantly larger than the emittance measured in the DR itself, and there are indications that it grows rapidly with increasing beam intensity. This long- standing problem has motivated studies of possible sources of this anomalous emittance growth. One possible contri- bution is non-linear magnetic fields in the extraction region experimented by the beam while passing off-axis through magnets of the DR during the extraction process. In this pa- per, simulations of the emittance growth are presented and compared to observations. These simulations include the effects of predicted non-linear field errors in the shared DR magnets and orbit displacements from the reference orbit in the extraction region. Results of recent measurements using closed orbit bumps to probe the relation between the extraction trajectory and the anomalous emittance growth are also presented.

PoS(CMB2006)049; International audience; The data processing of the data from the High Frequency Instrument (HFI) of the Planck mission will use several modules. Destriping is expected to play a central role in the mapmaking stage. This paper outlines two existing HFI l2 DPC destriping modules together with estimations of their performances. MOKAPIX is a temperature data destriping tool based on scanning redundancies on the sky. We have developped another modules, BOGOPIX , based on the same philosophy, to perform simultaneously destriping and relative intercalibration.
