Previous studies have shown the possibility of using European Remote Sensing/synthetic aperture radar (ERS/SAR) data to monitor surface soil moisture from space. The linear relationships between soil moisture and the SAR signal have been derived empirically and, thus, were a priori specific to the considered watershed. In order to overcome this limit, this study focused on two objectives. The first one was to validate over two years of data the empirical sensitivity of the radar signal to soil moisture, in the case of three agricultural watersheds with different soil compositions and land cover uses. The slope of the observed relationship was very consistent. Conversely, the offset could change, making the soil moisture retrieval only relative (and not absolute). The second one was to propose an 'operational' methodology for soil moisture monitoring based on ERS/SAR data. The implementation of this methodology is based on two steps: the calibration period and the operational period. During the calibration period, ground truth campaigns are performed to measure vegetation parameters (to correct the SAR signal from the vegetation effect), and the ERS/SAR data is processed only once a field land cover map is established. In contrast, during the operational period, no vegetation field campaigns are performed, and the images are processed as soon as they are available. The results confirm the relevance of this operational methodology, since no loss of performance (in soil moisture retrieval) is observed between the calibration and operational periods. This paper provides an efficient way of addressing the problem of detecting or estimating the 6-Dimensional (6D) pose of objects from an RGB image. A quaternion is used to define an object′s three-dimensional pose, but the pose represented by q and the pose represented by -q are equivalent, and the L2 loss between them is very large. Therefore, we define a new quaternion pose loss function to solve this problem. Based on this, we designed a new convolutional neural network named Q-Net to estimate an object's pose. Considering that the quaternion′s output is a unit vector, a normalization layer is added in Q-Net to hold the output of pose on a four-dimensional unit sphere. We propose a new algorithm, called the Bounding Box Equation, to obtain 3D translation quickly and effectively from 2D bounding boxes. The algorithm uses an entirely new way of assessing the 3D rotation (R) and 3D translation rotation (t) in only one RGB image. This method can upgrade any traditional 2D-box prediction algorithm to a 3D prediction model. We evaluated our model using the LineMod dataset, and experiments have shown that our methodology is more acceptable and efficient in terms of L2 loss and computational time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper deals with the automatic classification of customers on the basis of their movements around a sports shop center. We start by collecting coordinates from customers while they visit the store. Consequently, any costumer's path through the shop is formed by a list of coordinates, obtained with a frequency of one measurement per minute. A guess about the trajectory is constructed, and a number of parameters are calculated before performing a Clustering Process. As a result, we can identify several types of customers, and the dynamics of their behavior inside the shop. We can also monitor the state of the shop, identify different situations that appear during limited periods of time, and predict peaks in customer traffic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Common Machine-Learning (ML) approaches for scene classification require a large amount of training data. However, for classification of depth sensor data, in contrast to image data, relatively few databases are publicly available and manual generation of semantically labeled 3D point clouds is an even more time-consuming task. To simplify the training data generation process for a wide range of domains, we have developed the BLAINDER add-on package for the open-source 3D modeling software Blender, which enables a largely automated generation of semantically annotated point-cloud data in virtual 3D environments. In this paper, we focus on classical depth-sensing techniques Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) and Sound Navigation and Ranging (Sonar). Within the BLAINDER add-on, different depth sensors can be loaded from presets, customized sensors can be implemented and different environmental conditions (e.g., influence of rain, dust) can be simulated. The semantically labeled data can be exported to various 2D and 3D formats and are thus optimized for different ML applications and visualizations. It is essential for researchers to have a proper interpretation of remote sensing images (RSIs) and precise semantic labeling of their component parts. Although FCN (Fully Convolutional Networks)-like deep convolutional network architectures have been widely applied in the perception of autonomous cars, there are still two challenges in the semantic segmentation of RSIs. The first is to identify details in high-resolution images with complex scenes and to solve the class-mismatch issues; the second is to capture the edge of objects finely without being confused by the surroundings. HRNET has the characteristics of maintaining high-resolution representation by fusing feature information with parallel multi-resolution convolution branches. We adopt HRNET as a backbone and propose to incorporate the Class-Oriented Region Attention Module (CRAM) and Class-Oriented Context Fusion Module (CCFM) to analyze the relationships between classes and patch regions and between classes and local or global pixels, respectively. Thus, the perception capability of the model for the detailed part in the aerial image can be enhanced. We leverage these modules to develop an end-to-end semantic segmentation model for aerial images and validate it on the ISPRS Potsdam and Vaihingen datasets. Nowadays, we are witnessing the wide diffusion of active depth sensors. However, the generalization capabilities and performance of the deep face recognition approaches that are based on depth data are hindered by the different sensor technologies and the currently available depth-based datasets, which are limited in size and acquired through the same device. In this paper, we present an analysis on the use of depth maps, as obtained by active depth sensors and deep neural architectures for the face recognition task. We compare different depth data representations (depth and normal images, voxels, point clouds), deep models (two-dimensional and three-dimensional Convolutional Neural Networks, PointNet-based networks), and pre-processing and normalization techniques in order to determine the configuration that maximizes the recognition accuracy and is capable of generalizing better on unseen data and novel acquisition settings. Extensive intra- and cross-dataset experiments, which were performed on four public databases, suggest that representations and methods that are based on normal images and point clouds perform and generalize better than other 2D and 3D alternatives. Moreover, we propose a novel challenging dataset, namely MultiSFace, in order to specifically analyze the influence of the depth map quality and the acquisition distance on the face recognition accuracy. Accurate and efficient text detection in natural scenes is a fundamental yet challenging task in computer vision, especially when dealing with arbitrarily-oriented texts. Most contemporary text detection methods are designed to identify horizontal or approximately horizontal text, which cannot satisfy practical detection requirements for various real-world images such as image streams or videos. To address this lacuna, we propose a novel method called Rotational You Only Look Once (R-YOLO), a robust real-time convolutional neural network (CNN) model to detect arbitrarily-oriented texts in natural image scenes. First, a rotated anchor box with angle information is used as the text bounding box over various orientations. Second, features of various scales are extracted from the input image to determine the probability, confidence, and inclined bounding boxes of the text. Finally, Rotational Distance Intersection over Union Non-Maximum Suppression is used to eliminate redundancy and acquire detection results with the highest accuracy. Experiments on benchmark comparison are conducted upon four popular datasets, i.e., ICDAR2015, ICDAR2013, MSRA-TD500, and ICDAR2017-MLT. The results indicate that the proposed R-YOLO method significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of detection efficiency while maintaining high accuracy; for example, the proposed R-YOLO method achieves an F-measure of 82.3% at 62.5 fps with 720 p resolution on the ICDAR2015 dataset.
