The requirements to rear spotted wolffish, Anarhichas minor, a cold water, demersal fish, native to the north Atlantic Ocean, have been developed over the past 25 years (since 1990s) and it now is commercially produced in one fish farm in Norway with additional plans for commercial development in the near future in Quebec, Canada. Spotted wolffish have numerous attributes that make them a desirable species to culture in the United States including, but not limited to: having a high value; desired by consumers and chefs; not supplied by U.S. or Canadian fisheries; an established broodstock available in neighboring Quebec; well‐developed hatchlings that do not require live feed; high rearing density tolerance; and low disease susceptibility. Here, we review the advancements made in broodstock management and spawning, egg incubation, juvenile rearing, and on‐growing of fish, as well as future research and development needs. Areas requiring further focus include reducing variability in gamete production; nutritional studies at all life stages; health expertise; genetic selection; and further refinement of standard operating procedures at the commercial level for all life‐stages. Given the state of advancement of wolffish cultivation and the existence of a commercial operation in Norway, we propose that spotted wolffish is commercially ready for production in the United States with the primary barrier being a steady source of eggs to supply emerging pilot‐scale or commercial operations. Studying the diet of consumers using stable isotopes provides insight into the foraging ecology of individuals and species. To accurately reconstruct the integrated diet of animals using stable isotope values, we must quantify diet-tissue discrimination factors (DTDFs), or the way in which stable isotopes in prey are incorporated into the tissues of consumers. To quantify DTDFs, controlled experiments are needed, whereby consumers are fed a constant diet. However, relatively few controlled-diet studies have been conducted for seabirds. In this study, captive adult Atlantic puffins (Fratercula arctica) and common murres (Uria aalge) were fed a two-source diet of capelin (Mallotus villosus) and Atlantic silverside (Menidia menidia) to determine the DTDFs for the cellular component of blood and plasma for both δ15N and δ13C. The DTDFs for the cellular component (Δ15N: 2.80±0.28; Δ13C: 1.21±0.22) and plasma (Δ15N: 1.72±1.03; Δ13C: −0.18±0.56) of puffins were similar to those for the cellular component (Δ15N: 2.91±0.18; Δ13C: 1.09±0.23) and plasma (Δ15N: 2.18±0.77; Δ13C: −0.70±0.18) of murres. We reconstructed the diet of wild murres and puffins breeding on the northeastern coast of Newfoundland using previously published DTDFs and estimated DTDFs from our feeding experiment. Reconstructed dietary proportions supported a priori knowledge of diet, although outputs were sensitive to the DTDF used. Despite the similarity of our DTDFs for puffins and murres, along with the similarity of our DTDFs with those of other seabird species, our sensitivity analysis revealed considerable differences among resultant dietary contributions from mixing models, further highlighting the importance of using species- and tissue-specific DTDFs to enhance knowledge in the foraging ecology of seabirds using stable isotopes. The bioremediation capacities of Palmaria palmata and Ulva lactuca for removing dissolved nutrients in a cold-seawater fully recirculated ecosystemic representation of an estuarine aquatic habitat were evaluated. The seaweeds were cultured in the laboratory based on environmental conditions observed in a large-scale aquarium representing the marine ecosystem of the Gulf of Saint-Lawrence (Québec, Canada), i.e., salinity of 24 PSU, 5 and 10 °C, and under three combinations of high nitrate (NO3−) and phosphate (PO43−) concentrations (2865:195, 3570:242, and 4284: 291 μM). Neither nutrient levels nor temperature significantly changed nitrate and phosphate uptake rates (0.65 ± 0.15 and 1.76 ± 0.59 mg N gDW−1 day−1 and 0.14 ± 0.11 and 0.32 ± 0.21 mg P gDW−1 day−1 for P. palmata and U. lactuca, respectively). Growth rate of P. palmata was independent of temperature and nutrient concentrations with a mean of 0.64 ± 0.18% FW day−1. Ulva lactuca expressed its highest growth rate (2.81 ± 0.72% FW day−1) at 10 °C and intermediate nutrient concentration. C/N ratio was < 10 for both species before and after the experiment, indicating tissue nutrient enrichment possibly limiting nutrient uptake and growth. Background: Environmental temperature influences rates of embryonic development, but a detailed staging series for vertebrate embryos developing in the subzero cold of Antarctic waters is not yet available from fertilization to hatching. Given projected warming of the Southern Ocean, it is imperative to establish a baseline to evaluate potential effects of changing climate on fish developmental dynamics. Results: We studied the Bullhead notothen ( Notothenia coriiceps), a notothenioid fish inhabiting waters between -1.9 and +2 °C. In vitro fertilization produced embryos that progressed through cleavage, epiboly, gastrulation, segmentation, organogenesis, and hatching. We compared morphogenesis spatially and temporally to Zebrafish and medaka. Experimental animals hatched after about 6 months to early larval stages. To help understand skeletogenesis, we analyzed late embryos for expression of sox9 and runx2, which regulate chondrogenesis, osteogenesis, and eye development. Results revealed that, despite their prolonged developmental time course, N. coriiceps embryos developed similarly to those of other teleosts with large yolk cells. Conclusions: Our studies set the stage for future molecular analyses of development in these extremophile fish. Results provide a foundation for understanding the impact of ocean warming on embryonic development and larval recruitment of notothenioid fish, which are key factors in the marine trophic system. The 'earthy' and 'muddy' off-flavours in pond-reared fish are due to the presence of geosmin or 2-methylisoborneol in the flesh of the fish. Similar off-flavours have been reported in fish raised in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS); however, little information is available regarding the cause of these off-flavours. Our hypothesis was that earthy and muddy off-flavour compounds, found previously in pond-raised fish, are also responsible for off-flavours in fish raised in RAS. In this preliminary study, we examined water, biofilms in RAS and fillets from cultured arctic charr known to have off-flavours and requiring depuration using instrumental [solid-phase microextraction procedure and gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GC-MS)] and human sensory analyses. Geosmin was present in the samples taken from the biofilter and on the side walls of the tanks. Two-methylisoborneol was only found in low levels in the samples. The GC-MS results indicated the presence of geosmin in the fillets (705 ng kg), but lower levels were found in the water (30.5 ng L). Sensory analyses also detected an earthy flavour (i.e., geosmin presence) in the fillets, and, therefore, it appears that geosmin is the main compound responsible for the off-flavour in RAS. The goal of this study was to determine the optimal stocking density for rearing juvenile spotted wolffish, Anarhichas minor (Olafsen), at two different sizes and assess the welfare status in relation to density. No major growth impairment was observed, although smaller fish (50–100 g) were significantly affected by density during the 120 days of the experiment, with final mean weights of 119.6 ± 11.6, 118.0 ± 5.8 and 88.7 ± 0.6 g for initial rearing densities of 10, 20 and 40 kg m−2 respectively. No effect of rearing density was seen for larger fish (100–160 g) during the 90 days of the experiment, with final mean weights of 160.2 ± 5.9, 159.7 ± 3.7 and 163.7 ± 11.5 g at fixed rearing densities of 20, 30 and 40 kg m−2 respectively. Our results suggest that the optimal rearing density of juvenile spotted wolffish is below 40 kg m−2 for smaller size fish (∼50–100 g) and probably ≥40 kg m−2 for the larger fish (100–160 g). Furthermore, it appears that the range of rearing density used did not have a significant effect on a selection of stress indicators (Na+ and K+ concentration, haematocrit, hepatosomatic index, total amount of plasma proteins and liver and muscle water content) and immunity response (plasma lysozyme activity) of juvenile spotted wolffish, making it a very tolerant species to crowding. Phenotypic plasticity has been demonstrated in fishes but rarely addressed with respect to skeletogenesis. The influence of water velocity on the sequence of chondrification and ossification is studied for the median fins of Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus,during a period of 90 days post hatching. Time of appearance, relative position within sequences, and direction of development among serially repeated elements are compared between two velocity treatments. Water velocity has induced changes in the timing of events and to a lesser extent on the relative sequence events in the locomotor system. Ossification is more responsive to water velocity than chondrification, and early-forming elements are less responding than late-forming elements. Directions of development are fairly conservative. It is suggested that a faster sustained swimming (behavioural adaptation to a higher water velocity) could induce differential mechanical stresses on developing skeletal elements involved in locomotion and therefore induce changes primarily in the timing of the ossification. This is the first report of early-life developmental characteristics (coloration pattern, growth and survival) and genetic identification of the wolffish interspecific hybrid between Anarhichas minor and A. lupus, both endangered species in Canadian coastal water and of interest for cold-water aquaculture diversification. A first growth trial at 8 °C featuring pure strains A. minor and the hybrid A. minor × A. lupus in triplicates was conducted in 2006 during the period from 0 to 140 days post-hatch. A second growth trial was runned in 2007 featuring A. minor, A. lupus and the reciprocal hybrids A. minor × A. lupus and A. lupus × A. minor. The effects of temperature on protein metabolism have been studied mostly with respect to protein synthesis. Temperature generally has a parabolic effect on protein synthesis with a maximum rate being observed at optimal growth temperature. The effect of temperature on protein degradation is poorly understood. The 20S proteasome is mainly responsible for the degradation of short-lived and oxidatively modified proteins and has been recently identified as a potentially good proxy for protein degradation in fish. The aim of this experiment was to examine the relationships between the rate of;protein synthesis, activity of the 20S proteasome, oxidative stress markers and antioxidant capacity in white muscle of juvenile spotted wolffish (Anarhichas minol) acclimated at three temperatures (4, 8 and 12°C). The rate of protein synthesis was lower at 4°C than at 8°C while it was intermediate at 12°C. Despite the decrease of protein synthesis at low temperature, the activity of 20S proteasome activity was maintained high in fish acclimated at lower temperature (4°C), reaching levels 130% of that of fish acclimated at 8°C when measured at a common temperature. The oxidative stress markers TBARS and protein-carbonyl content did not change among temperature groups, but reduced glutathione concentration was higher in cold-acclimated fish, suggesting a higher antioxidant capacity in this group. Our data suggest that lower growth rate in cold temperature results from both high 20S proteasome activity and a reduced rate of protein synthesis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Three groups of newly hatched spotted wolffish ( Anarhichas minor) were held at three different temperatures in order to determine relationships between metabolic, digestive and growth response in rapidly developing larvae. Growth rates were successfully modulated by temperature (5, 8 and 12 °C). Activity levels of trypsin and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were positively linked to specific growth rates at all temperatures. Trypsin showed a positive compensation (higher activity at lower temperature) whereas glycolytic enzymes (pyruvate kinase and Lactate dehydrogenase) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) showed a negative compensation (lower activity at lower temperature). Citrate synthase was not affected by growth rate, indicating that the level of aerobic capacity was adequate in sustaining the high energetic needs associated with rapid growth early in the life of the spotted wolffish. In light of our results, it is suggested that protein digestion, as demonstrated by the activity profile of trypsin in relation to growth rate and temperature, is likely a key growth-limiting agent during the early-life stages of wolffishes. The article presents an experimental study which examines the positive effects of exposure to increased water velocity on the growth of newly hatched Arctic charr also known as Salvelinus alpinus L. The experiment used 1224 newly hatched fish with the aid of water velocity treatment which has an effect on growth in terms of length and weight. It was found out the use of a higher water velocity immediately after hatching is associated with a significant increase in growth. The study also suggests that environmental growth advantages achieved early in the life history of cod.
