Abstract

We empirically test the relation between the SFR(LIR) derived from the infrared luminosity, LIR, and the SFR(Ha) derived from the Ha emission line luminosity using simple conversion relations. We use a sample of 474 galaxies at z = 0.06 - 0.46 with both Ha detection (from 20k zCOSMOS survey) and new far-IR Herschel data (100 and 160 {\mu}m). We derive SFR(Ha) from the Ha extinction corrected emission line luminosity. We find a very clear trend between E(B - V) and LIR that allows to estimate extinction values for each galaxy even if the Ha emission line measurement is not reliable. We calculate the LIR by integrating from 8 up to 1000 {\mu}m the SED that is best fitting our data. We compare SFR(Ha) with the SFR(LIR). We find a very good agreement between the two SFR estimates, with a slope of m = 1.01 \pm 0.03 in the SFR(LIR) vs SFR(Ha) diagram, a normalization constant of a = -0.08 \pm 0.03 and a dispersion of sigma = 0.28 dex.We study the effect of some intrinsic properties of the galaxies in the SFR(LIR)-SFR(Ha) relation, such as the redshift, the mass, the SSFR or the metallicity. The metallicity is the parameter that affects most the SFR comparison. The mean ratio of the two SFR estimators log[SFR(LIR)/SFR(Ha)] varies by approx. 0.6 dex from metal-poor to metal-rich galaxies (8.1 < log(O/H) + 12 < 9.2). This effect is consistent with the prediction of a theoretical model for the dust evolution in spiral galaxies. Considering different morphological types, we find a very good agreement between the two SFR indicators for the Sa, Sb and Sc morphologically classified galaxies, both in slope and normalization. For the Sd, irregular sample (Sd/Irr), the formal best-fit slope becomes much steeper (m = 1.62 \pm 0.43), but it is still consistent with 1 at the 1.5 sigma level, because of the reduced statistics of this sub-sample., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

International audience; Introduction: We aimed to describe patients with coexisting infective endocarditis (IE) and bacterial meningitis (BM).Methods: We merged two large prospective cohorts, an IE cohort and a BM cohort, with only cases of definite IE and community-acquired meningitis. We compared patients who had IE and BM concurrently to patients with IE only and BM only.Results: Among the 1030 included patients, we identified 42 patients with IE-BM (4.1%). Baseline characteristics of patients with IE-BM were mostly similar to those of patients with IE, but meningitis was the predominant presentation at admission (39/42, 92.3%). Causative pathogens were predominantly Streptococcus pneumoniae (18/42, 42.9%) and Staphylococcus aureus (14/42, 33.3%). All pneumococcal IE were associated with BM (18/18). BM due to oral and group D streptococci, Streptococcus agalactiae, and S. aureus were frequently associated with IE (14/30, 46.7%). Three-month mortality was 28.6% in patients with IE-BM, 20.5% in patients with IE, and 16.6% in patients with BM.Conclusions: Patients with pneumococcal IE or altered mental status during IE must be investigated for BM. Patients with S. aureus, oral and group D streptococcal or enterococcal BM, or unfavorable outcome in pneumococcal meningitis would benefit from an echocardiography. Patients with the dual infection have the worst prognosis. Their identification is mandatory to initiate appropriate treatment.

Abstract

The fosfomycin breakpoint using the disc diffusion method (DDM) changed in the 2019 CA-SFM/EUCAST guidelines v2 (24mm versus 19mm). We assessed its impact on categorization of Enterobacterales recovered from urine samples in emergency departments. A total of 7749 and 2348 strains were tested using the DDM and the broth microdilution method (BMD), respectively. The DDM with the 19-mm breakpoint was in accordance with the BMD. Using the 24-mm breakpoint, the overall rate of fosfomycin resistance in Enterobacterales increased by three-fold (5.6% vs 18.1%, P0.01) and reached 2.8% and 86.5% in E. coli and K. pneumoniae, respectively. French guidelines for the management of community-acquired UTI remain appropriate. The accuracy of the methods for routine fosfomycin susceptibility testing should be assessed. The role of fosfomycin in the treatment of documented CA-UTI due to Enterobacterales other than E. coli should be evaluated considering its rate of resistance and recent data reporting low accuracy.

Abstract

Radiation therapy accelerators require highly accurate dose deposition and the output must be monitored frequently and regularly. Ionization chambers are the primary tool for this control, but their size and fragility make them unsuitable for use during patient treatment. In collaboration with a French center for cancer treatment in Caen, we describe the development and testing of a low-cost radiotherapy dosimeter (SDM) based on scintillating fibers and signal processing to reduce the effect of Cerenkov radiation background. The employment of photodiodes for light collection reduces the cost relative to systems using photomultipliers (PMTs). However, we have also developed a highly sensitive system that uses PMTs for very low-dose deposition for Brachytherapy. Comparison with standard ionization chamber shows about a 1% difference over a range of 6- to 25-MV photons. This dosimeter is 1 mm in diameter and can be placed where ever required including inside the body. Its small size and flexibility make it useful for delimiting critical regions, where organs may be very radiation sensitive. Index Terms--Dosimetry, oncology, radiotherapy, scintillator.

Abstract

Introduction. Technological advances during the last years in bacterial identification by molecular biology and mass spectrometry, or Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption lonisation-Time of Flight (MALDI-TOF) have allowed identifying new bacteria involved in urinary tract infections. The purpose of this review is to familiarize clinicians with these bacteria so that they can look at a particular target population and help biologists to suspect and identify them. Method. A bibliographic research was performed using the Medline database concerning the keywords Aerococcus, Actinobaculum, Alloscardovia, Trueperella. Results. If Aerococcus sp. is now well known, Actinobaculum sp., Alloscardovia sp. and Trueperella sp. remain rarely isolated and unknown from clinicians. Importance of these germs could be underestimated because of the identifying and isolation difficulties which existed beforehand. They are particularly found in a population of elderly people with underlying conditions or urological risk factors of urinary tract infection. Actinobaculum schaalii is also found more frequently in young children. Conclusion. Aerococcus sp. et A. schaalii are true uropathogens not to be underestimated. Further studies are still needed to confirm the specific involvement of Trueperella and Alloscardovia in urinary diseases. (C) 2015 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

Abstract

National audience; Blepharitis has multiple, poorly defined origins. The goal of this study was to investigate the bacterial flora present in patients affected with blepharitis in comparison with healthy subjects, so as to understand the role of bacterial etiologies in blepharitis. Fifty-four patients with blepharitis and 50 healthy controls participated in this study. Swabs were obtained and analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively for bacteria. A subgroup of 16 people (9 with blepharitis and 7 controls) also were investigated for Demodex. The percentages of the positive cultures and the number of colonies/case were clearly higher for patients with blepharitis in comparison with healthy controls. Bacteria were isolated for 81% of cases versus 38% for controls, with a mean of 39 colonies versus 4.4 colonies for controls. Abstract

Nuclei with {ital Z} up to 82 emitted in the {sup 208}Pb+{sup 197}Au reaction at {ital E}{sub lab}=29 MeV per nucleon have been measured as a function of the associated neutron multiplicity. The data reveal the presence of strong correlations between character of a collision and neutron multiplicity. The trends suggest a disassembly of the nuclear system into a large number of nucleons and small fragments in the events with the highest neutron multiplicity. In such events, approximately one-third of the neturons are released from the system and fragment yields decrease in an exponential fashion with increasing mass.
