1. Acoustic Communication in Dendroctonus adjunctus Blandford (Curculionidae Scolytinae): Description of Calls and Sound Production Mechanism

Abstract

The acoustic communication system (ACS) in bark beetles has been studied mainly in species of the genera Dendroctonus, Ips and Polygraphus. Specifically, ACS of the roundheaded pine beetle, Dendroctonus adjunctus, has been little studied. In this study, we described the stridulatory apparatus of this beetle using optical and scanning electron microscopy and recorded the call types produced by males in three behavioral contexts: stress, female–male–, and male–male interactions. From the spectrograms and waveforms, call types, as well as temporal (tooth strike, tooth strike rate, and intertooth strike interval) and spectral features (minimum, maximum and dominant frequency), were determined. Males have a functional elytro–tergal stridulatory apparatus—females do not—consisting of a file for the pars stridens and two lobes for the plectrum. Most of spectro–temporal features were statistically different between single– and multi–noted calls and across the three behavioral contexts. In the male–male interaction, a new type of call named “withdrawal” was produced by the male withdrawing or fleeing. Our results suggest that the spectro–temporal features of single– and multiple–noted calls in the three behavioral conditions are specific and different from each other. Yet, the combination of single and multiple calls determines an overall calling pattern characteristic of the tested behaviors and, therefore, is species–specific. more...

Abstract

This paper investigates the radio resource management (RRM) design for multiuser rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA), accounting for various characteristics of practical wireless systems, such as the use of discrete rates, the inability to serve all users, and the imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC). Specifically, failure to consider these characteristics in RRM design may lead to inefficient use of radio resources. Therefore, we formulate the RRM of RSMA as optimization problems to maximize respectively the weighted sum rate (WSR) and weighted energy efficiency (WEE), and jointly optimize the beamforming, user admission, discrete/continuous rates, accounting for imperfect SIC, which result in nonconvex mixed-integer nonlinear programs that are challenging to solve. Despite the difficulty of the optimization problems, we develop algorithms that can find high-quality solutions. We show via simulations that carefully accounting for the aforementioned characteristics, can lead to significant gains. Precisely, by considering that transmission rates are discrete, the transmit power can be utilized more intelligently, allocating just enough power to guarantee a given discrete rate. Additionally, we reveal that user admission plays a crucial role in RSMA, enabling additional gains compared to random admission by facilitating the servicing of selected users with mutually beneficial channel characteristics. Abstract

The introduction of chiral organic spacers in low-dimensional metal-halide perovskites triggers chiroptical activity, which is appealing for spintronic applications. However, a comprehensive understanding of structure formation and the ability to control phase purity in such materials have yet to be developed. Herein, the impact of processing conditions on the phase purity, microstructure, and chiroptical properties of chiral 2D perovskites is explored. The anisotropic emergence of a 1D perovskite inside the 2D matrix and its dependence on the organic cation chirality, solvent, and thermal annealing conditions are shown. By controlling these parameters, the in-plane conductivity of the films is nearly doubled. Furthermore, it is demonstrated, for the first time, that solvent choice and the spatial configuration of the organic cation can have an impact on the residual lattice strain and the energetic disorder of the system. 4. High energy and high power primary Li-CF$_x$ batteries enabled by the combined effects of the binder and the electrolyte

Abstract

Several effective methods have been developed recently to demonstrate simultaneous high energy and high power density in Li - carbon fluoride (CF$_x$) batteries. These methods can achieve as high as 1000 Wh/kg energy density at 60-70 kW/kg power density (40-50 C rate) in coin cells and 750 Wh/kg energy density at 12.5 kW/kg power density (20 C rate) in pouch cells. This performance is made possible by ingenious nano-architecture design, controlled porosity, boron doping and electrolyte additives. In the present study, we show that a similarly great performance, 931 Wh/kg energy density at 59 kW/kg power density, can be achieved by using a polyacrylonitrile binder and a LiBF4 electrolyte in Li - graphite fluoride coin cells. We also demonstrate that the observed effect is the result of the right combination of the binder and the electrolyte. We propose that the mechanistic origin of the observed phenomena is an electro-catalytic effect by the polyacrylonitrile binder. Abstract

We study one-point statistics of spiral turbulent pulsations on the background of three-dimensional large-scale vortex in a rotating fluid. Assuming that the helical flow is created by a statistically axially symmetric random force with broken mirror symmetry, we analytically calculate velocity-vorticity mean including its magnitude and the anisotropy. For electrically conducting liquid, we examine the $\alpha$-effect in the system. The found elements of $\alpha$-matrix strongly depend on relation between Rossby $\mathrm{Ro}$ and magnetic Prandtl $\mathrm{Pr}_{\mathrm{m}}$ numbers in considered region $\mathrm{Ro}\lesssim 1$, $\mathrm{Pr}_{\mathrm{m}} \lesssim 1$. Abstract

Millimeter-wave self-backhauled small cells are a key component of next-generation wireless networks. Their dense deployment will increase data rates, reduce latency, and enable efficient data transport between the access and backhaul networks, providing greater flexibility not previously possible with optical fiber. Despite their high potential, operating dense self-backhauled networks optimally is an open challenge, particularly for radio resource management (RRM). This paper presents, RadiOrchestra, a holistic RRM framework that models and optimizes beamforming, rate selection as well as user association and admission control for self-backhauled networks. The framework is designed to account for practical challenges such as hardware limitations of base stations (e.g., computational capacity, discrete rates), the need for adaptability of backhaul links, and the presence of interference. Our framework is formulated as a nonconvex mixed-integer nonlinear program, which is challenging to solve. To approach this problem, we propose three algorithms that provide a trade-off between complexity and optimality. Furthermore, we derive upper and lower bounds to characterize the performance limits of the system. Abstract

We consider analytically pair structure function of turbulent pulsations on the background of a coherent geostrophic vortex in a fast rotating fluid. The statistics of the turbulent pulsation is determined by their dynamics which is the dynamics of inertia waves affected by the differential rotation in the vortex and weak viscous damping. Our consideration is restricted by the smallest scales, where the velocity field remains smooth. We establish the anisotropy of the structure function. Abstract

Liquid Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) based methods are commonly used for high-throughput, quantitative measurements of the proteome (i.e. the set of all proteins in a sample at a given time). Targeted LC-MS produces data in the form of a two-dimensional time series spectrum, with the mass to charge ratio of analytes (m/z) on one axis, and the retention time from the chromatography on the other. The elution of a peptide of interest produces highly specific patterns across multiple fragment ion traces (extracted ion chromatograms, or XICs). In this paper, we formulate this peak detection problem as a multivariate time series segmentation problem, and propose a novel approach based on the Transformer architecture. Here we augment Transformers, which are capable of capturing long distance dependencies with a global view, with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), which can capture local context important to the task at hand, in the form of Transformers with Convolutional Self-Attention. We further train this model in a semisupervised manner by adapting state of the art semisupervised image classification techniques for multi-channel time series data. Experiments on a representative LC-MS dataset are benchmarked using manual annotations to showcase the encouraging performance of our method; it outperforms baseline neural network architectures and is competitive against the current state of the art in automated peak detection. more...

Abstract

We investigated the possibility of diagnosing the degree of departure from the Maxwellian distribution using the Fe XVII - Fe XVIII spectra originating in plasmas in collisional ionization equilibrium, such as in the cores of solar active regions or microflares. The original collision strengths for excitation are integrated over the non-Maxwellian electron $\kappa$-distributions characterized by a high-energy tail. Synthetic X-ray emission line spectra were calculated for a range of temperatures and $\kappa$. We focus on the 6-24 A spectral range to be observed by the upcoming Marshall Grazing-Incidence X-ray Spectrometer MaGIXS. We find that many line intensity ratios are sensitive to both $T$ and $\kappa$. Best diagnostic options are provided if a ratio involving both Fe XVII and Fe XVIII is combined with another ratio involving lines formed within a single ion. The sensitivity of such diagnostics to $\kappa$ is typically a few tens of per cent. Much larger sensitivity, of about a factor of two to three, can be obtained if the Fe XVIII 93.93 A line observed by SDO/AIA is used in conjuction with the X-ray lines. Abstract

The synthesis of vitamin D is strongly linked to the availability of solar energy. For a long time, it was clear that using the erythemal irradiances is a good choice to calculate the exposure time. Several authors argue that this method of minimum exposure time overestimates the calculation of the solar irradiance of vitamin D. In this paper, the vitamin D and erythemal irradiances are calculated on the basis of the spectral solar irradiance in Urcuqu\'i (Ecuador). From these results, we obtain the minimal exposure time. Abstract

Precision graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) offer distinctive physicochemical properties that are highly dependent on their geometric topologies, thereby holding great potential for applications in carbon‐based optoelectronics and spintronics. While the edge structure and width control has been a popular strategy for engineering the optoelectronic properties of GNRs, non‐hexagonal‐ring‐containing GNRs remain underexplored due to synthetic challenges, despite offering an equally high potential for tailored properties. Herein, we report the synthesis of a wavy GNR (wGNR) by embedding periodic eight‐membered rings into its carbon skeleton, which is achieved by the A2B2‐type Diels–Alder polymerization between dibenzocyclooctadiyne (6) and dicyclopenta[e,l]pyrene‐5,11‐dione derivative (8), followed by a selective Scholl reaction of the obtained ladder‐type polymer (LTP) precursor. The obtained wGNR, with a length of up to 30 nm, has been thoroughly characterized by solid‐state NMR, FT‐IR, Raman, and UV/Vis spectroscopy with the support of DFT calculations. The non‐planar geometry of wGNR efficiently prevents the inter‐ribbon π–π aggregation, leading to photoluminescence in solution. Consequently, the wGNR can function as an emissive layer for organic light‐emitting electrochemical cells (OLECs), offering a proof‐of‐concept exploration in implementing luminescent GNRs into optoelectronic devices. Abstract

Despite the remarkable advances in the field of perovskite photovoltaics, the use of toxic solvents for their fabrication poses a significant challenge to their scale‐up and commercialization. The vast majority of studies rely on using the highly hazardous N, N‐Dimethylformamide (DMF), with green alternatives remaining scarce. In this work, the use of glycerol formal (Gly‐F) is reported as a green solvent for fabricating quasi‐2D (n = 5) perovskite solar cells. Quasi‐2D perovskite films processed from Gly‐F exhibit a high degree of uniformity and a compact microstructure. When integrated into solar cells, the green solvent‐processed films reach a promising power conversion efficiency of 14.53%. This performance is lower than that of DMF‐based perovskites, most likely due to the presence of laterally oriented low n perovskite phases. Interestingly, while the performance of DMF‐based devices is rather irreproducible, the performance of Gly‐F‐based devices is robust and consistent.
