Scholars have argued that schools are "equalizers" because inequalities in test scores by race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status (SES) grow faster over summer vacation than over the school year. In this study, we use nationally representative data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study--Kindergarten Classes of 1998-1999 and 2010-2011 to examine the extent to which such patterns have changed over time. Results suggest that more between-group equalizing by race/ethnicity and SES occurred over kindergarten in the recent cohort. However, this was often followed by more inequality widening over summer and more widening or less narrowing over first grade in the latter cohort. The net result was that in recent years, inequality tended to widen more (Black-White) or narrow less (SES and Hispanic-White) over the first 2 years of schooling.

Cancer is a noncommunicable disease burden and the second‐leading cause of death worldwide. Novel medications and drug possibilities are sought everyday throughout the world in pursuit of cancer therapy. Colorectal cancer as one of the leading cancers across the globe can be treated effectively using TCM via decreasing the incidence and increasing the survival of patients. Gallic acid (GA) is an effective polyphenol used in TCM to treat several disorders including cancer. Our hypothesis was set to determine that GA possesses cytotoxic effects on CRC cells and that apoptosis and/or autophagy could be the rationale behind the mechanism. Therefore, in the current study, we investigated the cytotoxic effects of GA on human colorectal adenocarcinoma HT‐29 cells and the mechanisms of such effects. The IC50 for the cytotoxic effects of GA as evidenced by the MTT assay was 37.08 μg/mL. The outcomes indicated that GA can cause changes in MMP and result in the formation or accumulation of exogenous ROS at the IC50 dose. Consequently, the polyphenol can induce mitochondrial‐ or ER‐stress‐induced apoptosis and canonical autophagy other than contributing to the induction of ferroptosis in HT‐29 cells as evidenced by quantitative PCR and western blotting. Our results indicate that GA is an effective cytotoxic agent for the management of CRC at the preclinical level and is a valuable candidate for clinical trials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The flower of Sarcandra glabra (Thunb.) Nakai (FSN) has been considered an important supplementation material in natural flower-flavoured tea products in Vietnam. The present work has considerable significance for adding pharmacological value of FSN. Two compounds, namely emodin and methyl rosmarinate, were identified for the first time from a methanolic extract of FSN from Vietnam while analysing the inhibitory capacity of xanthine oxidase and cytotoxic activities. High levels of xanthine oxidase inhibiting capacity and cytotoxicity activity against HepG2 and A549 cancer cell lines were detected from emodin, with IC50 of 4.88 ± 0.42, 13.72 ± 0.48, and 18.33 ± 0.10 μg/mL, respectively. Emodin also activated the apoptotic factors of caspase-9, Bax, and PARP in HepG2, and caspase-3/9 and p53 in A549. Our results revealed for the first time the xanthine oxidase inhibitory effect of M70 with IC50 of 34.15 ± 1.33 μg/mL, which would shed light on its potential application for developing anti-hyperuricemia agents. In approximately 0.6– 5.8% of patients with small intestinal obstruction, the cause is internal hernia, with paraduodenal hernias accounting for approximately 40% of cases. Here, we present the case of a 51-year-old man diagnosed with obstruction of the small intestine caused by a hernia on the left side of the duodenum. The treatment involved returning the bowel loops to the normal position and closing the hernia pocket using Prolene 2.0 sutures. The duration of the surgery was 30 min. Five days later, the patient’s condition was stable and he was discharged from the hospital; at the 32-month postoperative follow-up, he remained in stable condition with no recurrence. An abdominal computed tomography scan is valuable for early diagnosis of paraduodenal hernia in the absence of complications, and the cause can be identified and the bowel returned to the normal position by endoscopic surgery, with closure of the hernia pocket if the intestine does not stick to the pocket.Keywords: open surgery, paraduodenal hernia, internal hernia, intestinal obstruction

Given the dearth of high-quality curriculum materials aligned with the new standards (NGSS and CCSS) and low student persistence in STEM fields, we sought to develop and test a STEM curriculum that would improve student knowledge, interest, and emotions. A cluster randomized control trial was conducted to assess the impact of Speedometry, a two-unit STEM curriculum that uses familiar toy cars to explore math and science concepts. A total of 1,615 fourth-grade students across 48 classrooms and 17 schools in an urban district participated in the study. Using a 3-level multilevel model (students nested within teachers and schools) and controls for student and teacher characteristics, we found that Speedometry led to significant increases in student knowledge and positive emotions such as excitement. Speedometry also led to significant decreases in negative emotions such as boredom, frustration, and confusion. The curriculum was implemented with high fidelity as evidenced by classroom observations and teacher self-reports.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the value of serum lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2), ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), and cystatin C (Cys-C) in predicting the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Clinical data from 104 CHD patients admitted to our hospital from January 2020 to December 2022 were analyzed. Of them, 31 patients had stable angina (Group-S), 36 patients were diagnosed with unstable angina (Group-U), and 37 patients had acute myocardial infarction (Group-A). Additionally, clinical data from 35 healthy individuals undergoing physical examination during the same time period were selected as the control group. Levels of blood lipid indicators and serum Lp-PLA2, IMA, and Cys-C levels were compared between the groups. RESULTS: The rates of diabetes, hypertension, and smoking in Group-S, Group-U, and Group-A were significantly higher than those in the control group (p<0.05). Levels of Lp-PLA2, IMA, and Cys-C in Group-S, Group-U, and Group-A were significantly higher than those in the control group (p<0.05). Levels of Lp-PLA2, IMA, and Cys-C in Group-U and Group-A were significantly higher than those in Group-S, and Group-A had the highest value of these indexes (p<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that Lp-PLA2, Cys-C, and IMA were important risk factors for the onset of CHD (p<0.05). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis showed that the area under the curve (AUC) of Lp-PLA2, IMA, and Cys-C predicting the occurrence of CHD was 0.775, 0.835, and 0.735, respectively. The combined prediction of the three factors has an AUC of 0.920, which is higher than the individual prediction. CONCLUSIONS: L p-PLA2, I MA, a nd C ys-C are closely related to the onset and progression of CHD. These indicators, therefore, can be used in clinical practice to predict and evaluate CHD. The results of numerical research of a soft type airship aerodynamic characteristics in subsonic flow of viscous gas are received for the airship locating near to a screen and having the working propellers. The influence of propeller rotation and relative distance of the airship to the screen on values of its aerodynamic normal and longitudinal forces, and also pitching moment is shown at various airship angles of attack.

Digital transformation, modern technologies to enable autonomous production capabilities, and smart logistical systems are prerequisite strategies to gain competitive advantages in developing countries. Additive manufacturing (AM) or three-dimensional printing offering more significant advantages, can manufacture complex geometries of products with various materials. AM plays a main role in reducing the number of parts, helping reduce and eliminate assembly time and cost. However, the application is still limited, especially in developing countries like Vietnam. This research paper aims to identify and assess the challenges associated with applying additive manufacturing in Southeast Vietnam. This study is conducted in three phases. Step one identifies challenges by reviewing previous studies. Step two applies semi-structured interviews with experts to consolidate these challenges to build a multi-level hierarchical structure of challenges. The third stage is to use a multi-hierarchical process method to rank these issues in order to organize the necessary resources for a successful response. The results show that there are five main challenges and 25 sub-challenges in implementing additive printing technology. Using the Average AHP method, financial and strategic challenges are ranked first and second significant, respectively. This paper contributes by identification of Additive Manufacturing implementation challenges based on the literature review and semi-structured interview with the experts. It provides an assessment of the challenges to help the practitioners robust the addictive manufacturing implementation in the manufacturing industry in Vietnam with limited resources.
