We have probed the capability of third-generation Gravitational Waves (GW) interferometers, such as the Einstein Telescope and Cosmic Explorer, to constrain a cosmological model with an interacting dark sector. We focused on GW events with a detected electromagnetic counterpart being the $\gamma$ or X emission of Gamma-Ray Burst, and a Kilonova emission. We assume the first one to be detected by the THESEUS satellite, while the second one to be detected by the Vera Rubin Observatory. We probed three different interaction kernels and found that the posterior estimation of the cosmological parameters is biased due to the existing degeneracies between the dark and matter sectors. We also found that introducing an external prior on the matter density parameter breaks the degeneracy, removes the bias results, and improves the accuracy on the dark sector parameters., Comment: 16 pages, 6 Table, and 3 Figures. In this work, we undertake an analysis of new wormhole solutions within an action-dependent Lagrangian framework. These geometries can be traversable and supported by a positive energy density. The modification of the gravitational field equations is produced by the inclusion in the gravitational Lagrangian linear of a background four-vector $\lambda_{\mu}$. This new term expands significantly the conventional description of gravity making it highly non-linear, and therefore drawing general conclusions about legitimate forms of $\lambda_{\mu}$ proves a formidable task in general. It is, then, customary to adopt an ansatz that strikes a balance between enabling new phenomenology while retaining a significant degree of generality on $\lambda_\mu$. Ours is given by the choice $\lambda_\mu=(0,\lambda_1(r), 0, 0)$, with an arbitrary $\lambda_1(r)$. By setting $\lambda_1(r)=-1/r$ we craft new families with physically desirable properties, but the wormholes thus generated turn out to be conical, as evidenced by an angle deficit, in a similar fashion to other known solution families. Under the general shape of $\lambda_1(r)$, we demonstrate that these solutions are not compatible with the Null Energy Condition (NEC) in general, as it happens to their General Relativity counterparts, except on specific occasions where the derivative of the redshift function of the metric diverges at the throat (however, in these latter cases, the traversability of the wormhole will be disrupted). On the other hand, it is possible to solve the conical character and satisfies the flatness condition for more general functions of $\lambda_1(r)$., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Modified gravity theories can be used for the description of homogeneous and isotropic cosmological models through the corresponding field equations. These can be cast into systems of autonomous differential equations because of their sole dependence on a well chosen time variable, be it the cosmological time, or an alternative. For that reason a dynamical systems approach offers a reliable route to study those equations. Through a model independent set of variables we are able to study all $f(Q)$ modified gravity models. The drawback of the procedure is a more complicated constraint equation. However, it allows the dynamical system to be formulated in fewer dimensions than using other approaches. In this paper we will list a few important goals that need to be addressed in the next decade, also taking into account the current discordances between the different cosmological probes, such as the disagreement in the value of the Hubble constant $H_0$, the $\sigma_8$--$S_8$ tension, and other less statistically significant anomalies. While these discordances can still be in part the result of systematic errors, their persistence after several years of accurate analysis strongly hints at cracks in the standard cosmological scenario and the necessity for new physics or generalisations beyond the standard model. In this paper, we focus on the $5.0\,\sigma$ tension between the {\it Planck} CMB estimate of the Hubble constant $H_0$ and the SH0ES collaboration measurements. After showing the $H_0$ evaluations made from different teams using different methods and geometric calibrations, we list a few interesting new physics models that could alleviate this tension and discuss how the next decade's experiments will be crucial. Moreover, we focus on the tension of the {\it Planck} CMB data with weak lensing measurements and redshift surveys, about the value of the matter energy density $\Omega_m$, and the amplitude or rate of the growth of structure ($\sigma_8,f\sigma_8$). We list a few interesting models proposed for alleviating this tension, and we discuss the importance of trying to fit a full array of data with a single model and not just one parameter at a time. Additionally, we present a wide range of other less discussed anomalies at a statistical significance level lower than the $H_0$--$S_8$ tensions which may also constitute hints towards new physics, and we discuss possible generic theoretical approaches that can collectively explain the non-standard nature of these signals.[Abridged], Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021. 224 pages, 27 figures. The field equations of modified gravity theories, when considering a homogeneous and isotropic cosmological model, always become autonomous differential equations. This relies on the fact that in such models all variables only depend on cosmological time, or another suitably chosen time parameter. Consequently, the field equations can always be cast into the form of a dynamical system, a successful approach to study such models. We propose a perspective that is applicable to many different modified gravity models and relies on the standard cosmological density parameters only, making our choice of variables model independent. The drawback of our approach is a more complicated constraint equation. In this work we explore and test new formulations of cosmological scenarios in $f(Q)$ theories. In these settings, the non-metricity scalar ($Q$) is the main source of gravity and Friedmann equations are modified to account for the associated degrees of freedom. This work focuses first on the derivation, and then theoretical and observational analysis of two such (new) exact cosmological models; they both display a non-standard behaviour in which an additional parameter encoding non-metricity effects acts in the fashion of a screened cosmological constant. One of the new settings has the same background evolution as the well know DGP cosmological model, while the other resembles the former considerably, although its origin is purely phenomenological. We use the Markov Chain Montecarlo method combined with standard statistical techniques to perform observational astrophysical tests relying upon background data, specifically these are Type Ia Supernovae luminosities and direct Hubble data (from cosmic clocks), along with Cosmic Microwave Background shift and Baryon Acoustic Oscillations data. In addition, we compute some of the cosmographic parameters and other discriminators with the purpose of refining our knowledge about these models in the light of their theoretical and observational signatures, and this allows for a better comparison with the (concordance) $\Lambda$CDM setup. General Relativity and the $\Lambda$CDM framework are currently the standard lore and constitute the concordance paradigm. Nevertheless, long-standing open theoretical issues, as well as possible new observational ones arising from the explosive development of cosmology the last two decades, offer the motivation and lead a large amount of research to be devoted in constructing various extensions and modifications. All extended theories and scenarios are first examined under the light of theoretical consistency, and then are applied to various geometrical backgrounds, such as the cosmological and the spherical symmetric ones. Their predictions at both the background and perturbation levels, and concerning cosmology at early, intermediate and late times, are then confronted with the huge amount of observational data that astrophysics and cosmology are able to offer recently. Theories, scenarios and models that successfully and efficiently pass the above steps are classified as viable and are candidates for the description of Nature. This work is a Review of the recent developments in the fields of gravity and cosmology, presenting the state of the art, high-lighting the open problems, and outlining the directions of future research. In this work, we further study a metric modified theory of gravity which contains a non-minimal coupling to matter, more precisely, we assume two functions of the scalar curvature, $f_1$ and $f_2$, where the first one generalises the Hilbert-Einstein action, while the second couples to the matter Lagrangian. On the one hand, assuming a $\Lambda$CDM background, we calculate analytical solutions for the functions $f_1$ and $f_2$. We consider two setups: on the first one, we fix $f_2$ and compute $f_1$ and on the second one, we fix $f_1$ and compute $f_2$. Moreover, we do the analysis for two different energy density contents, a matter dominated universe and a general perfect fluid with a constant equation of state fuelling the universe expansion. On the other hand, we complete our study by performing a cosmographic analysis for $f_1$ and $f_2$. Over the last years some interest has been gathered by $f(Q)$ theories, which are new candidates to replace Einstein's prescription for gravity. The non-metricity tensor $Q$ allows to put forward the assumption of a free torsionless connection and, consequently, new degrees of freedom in the action are taken into account. This work focuses on a class of $f(Q)$ theories, characterized by the presence of a general power-law term which adds up to the standard (linear in) $Q$ term in the action, and on new cosmological scenarios arising from them. Using the Markov chain Montecarlo method we carry out statistical tests relying upon background data such as Type Ia Supernovae luminosities and direct Hubble data (from cosmic clocks), along with Cosmic Microwave Background shift and Baryon Acoustic Oscillations data. This allows us to perform a multifaceted comparison between these new cosmologies and the (concordance) $\Lambda$CDM setup. We conclude that, at the current precision level, the best fits of our $f(Q)$ models correspond to values of their specific parameters which make them hardly distinguishable from our General Relativity "\'echantillon", that is $\Lambda$CDM., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures

In this work, we consider an extension of symmetric teleparallel gravity, namely, $f(Q)$ gravity, where the fundamental block to describe spacetime is the nonmetricity, $Q$. Within this formulation of gravitation, we perform an observational analysis of several modified $f(Q)$ models using the redshift approach, where the $f(Q)$ Lagrangian is reformulated as an explicit function of the redshift, $f(z)$. Various different polynomial parameterizations of $f(z)$ are proposed, including new terms which would allow for deviations from the $\Lambda$CDM model. Given a variety of observational probes, such as the expansion rate data from early-type galaxies, Type Ia Supernovae, Quasars, Gamma Ray Bursts, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations data and Cosmic Microwave Background distance priors, we have checked the validity of these models at the background level in order to verify if this new formalism provides us with plausible alternative models to explain the late time acceleration of the universe. In this work we study in detail a phenomenological generalization of the Chaplygin cosmological model, which we call as \textit{umami} Chaplygin model. We consider three different cosmological background scenarios in which our fluid can play three different roles: only as a dark energy component; as a dark matter and dark energy component; and as a dark plus baryonic matter and dark energy component. With such analysis we explore the possibility to unify the dark fluids under one single component within the context of General Relativity. We test this hypothesis against the main available data related to the cosmological background, namely: Type Ia supernovae; Baryon Acoustic Oscillations; Quasars; Gamma Ray Bursts; Hubble data from cosmic chronometers; and Cosmic Microwave Background. We eventually compare the statistically efficiency and reliability of our model to describe observational data with respect to the standard $\Lambda$CDM model by means of the Bayesian Evidence. Final results point to a positive (albeit not strong) evidence in favor of a possible unification of dark energy and dark matter with a the \textit{umami} fluid., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures. The study of the dynamics of a two-body system in modified gravity constitutes a more complex problem than in Newtonian gravity. Numerical methods are typically needed to solve the equations of geodesics. Despite the complexity of the problem, the study of a two-body system in $f(R)$ gravity leads to a new exciting perspective hinting the right strategy to adopt in order to probe modified gravity. Our results point out some differences between the {\em semiclassical} (Newtonian) approach, and the {\em relativistic} (geodesic) one thus suggesting that the latter represents the best strategy for future tests of modified theories of gravity. { Finally, we have also highlighted the capability of forthcoming observations to serve as smoking gun of modified gravity revealing a departure from GR or further reducing the parameter space of $f(R)$ gravity}. \keywords{$f(R)$ gravity \and binary system \and geodesics \and precession, Comment: 7 Pages, 2 figures. It is a very well established matter nowadays that many modified gravity models can offer a sound alternative to General Relativity for the description of the accelerated expansion of the universe. But it is also equally well known that no clear and sharp discrimination between any alternative theory and the classical one has been found so far. In this work, we attempt at formulating a different approach starting from the general class of $f(R)$ theories as test probes: we try to reformulate $f(R)$ Lagrangian terms as explicit functions of the redshift, i.e., as $f(z)$. In this context, the $f(R)$ setting to the consensus cosmological model, the $\Lambda$CDM model, can be written as a polynomial including just a constant and a third-order term. Starting from this result, we propose various different polynomial parameterizations $f(z)$, including new terms which would allow for deviations from $\Lambda$CDM, and we thoroughly compare them with observational data. While on the one hand we have found no statistically preference for our proposals (even if some of them are as good as $\Lambda$CDM by using Bayesian Evidence comparison), we think that our novel approach could provide a different perspective for the development of new and observationally reliable alternative models of gravity., Comment: 12 pages

Alternative theories of gravity may serve to overcame several shortcomings of the standard cosmological model but, in their weak field limit, General Relativity must be recovered so as to match the tight constraints at the Solar System scale. Therefore, testing such alternative models at scales of stellar systems could give a unique opportunity to confirm or rule them out. One of the most straightforward modifications is represented by analytical $f(R)$-gravity models that introduce a Yukawa-like modification to the Newtonian potential thus modifying the dynamics of particles. Using the geodesics equations, we have illustrated the amplitude of these modifications. First, we have integrated numerically the equations of motion showing the orbital precession of a particle around a massive object. Second, we have computed an analytic expression for the periastron advance of systems having their semi-major axis much shorter than the Yukawa-scale length. Finally, we have extended our results to the case of a binary system composed of two massive objects. The {\it concordance} cosmological model has been successfully tested throughout the last decades. Despite its successes, the fundamental nature of dark matter and dark energy is still unknown. Modifications of the gravitational action have been proposed as an alternative to these dark components. The straightforward modification of gravity is to generalize the action to a function, $f(R)$, of the scalar curvature. Thus one is able to describe the emergence and the evolution of the Large Scale Structure without any additional (unknown) dark component. In the weak field limit of the $f(R)$-gravity, a modified Newtonian gravitational potential arises. This gravitational potential accounts for an extra force, generally called fifth force, that produces a precession of the orbital motion even in the classic mechanical approach. We have shown that the orbits in the modified potential can be written as Keplerian orbits under some conditions on the strength and scale length of this extra force. Nevertheless, we have also shown that this extra term gives rise to the precession of the orbit. Thus, comparing our prediction with the measurements of the precession of some planetary motions, we have found that the strength of the fifth force must be in the range $[2.70-6.70]\times10^{-9}$ whit the characteristic scale length to fixed to the fiducial values of $\sim 5000$ AU., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. The cosmological redshift drift could lead to the next step in high-precision cosmic geometric observations, becoming a direct and irrefutable test for cosmic acceleration. In order to test the viability and possible properties of this effect, also called Sandage-Loeb (SL) test, we generate a model independent mock data set so as to compare its constraining power with that of the future mock data sets of Type Ia Supernovae (SNe) and Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO). The performance of those data sets is analyzed by testing several cosmological models with the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method, both independently and combining all data sets. Final results show that, in general, SL data sets allow for remarkable constraints on the matter density parameter today $\Omega_m$ on every tested model, showing also a great complementarity with SNe and BAO data regarding dark energy (DE) parameters., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, accepted and to be published in EPJC

The clustering amplitude of 7143 clusters from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) is found to increase with cluster mass, closely agreeing with the Gaussian random field hypothesis for structure formation. The amplitude of the observed cluster correlation exceeds the predictions from pure cold dark matter (CDM) simulation by $\simeq 6\%$ for the standard Planck-based values of the cosmological parameters. We show that this excess can be naturally accounted for by free streaming of light neutrinos, which opposes gravitational growth, so clusters formed at fixed mass are fewer and hence more biased than for a pure CDM density field. An enhancement of the cluster bias by 7\% matches the observations, corresponding to a total neutrino mass, $m_{\nu} = 0.119 \pm 0.034$ eV at 67\% confidence level, for the standard relic neutrino density. If ongoing laboratory experiments favor a normal neutrino mass hierarchy then we may infer a somewhat larger total mass than the minimum oscillation based value, $\sum m_{\nu} \simeq 0.056eV$, with 90\% confidence. Using Planck satellite data, we construct SZ gas pressure profiles for a large, volume-complete sample of optically selected clusters. We have defined a sample of over 8,000 redMaPPer clusters from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), within the volume-complete redshift region 0.100 < z < 0.325, for which we construct Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect maps by stacking Planck data over the full range of richness. Dividing the sample into richness bins we simultaneously solve for the mean cluster mass in each bin together with the corresponding radial pressure profile parameters, employing an MCMC analysis. These profiles are well detected over a much wider range of cluster mass and radius than previous work, showing a clear trend towards larger break radius with increasing cluster mass. Our SZ-based masses fall ~24% below the mass-richness relations from weak lensing, in a similar fashion as the "hydrostatic bias" related with X-ray derived masses. We correct for this bias to derive an optimal mass-richness relation finding a slope 1.22 +/- 0.04 and a pivot mass log(M_500/M_0)= 14.432 +/- 0.041, evaluated at a richness lambda=60. Finally, we derive a tight Y_500-M_500 relation over a wide range of cluster mass, with a power law slope equal to 1.72 +/- 0.07, that agrees well with the independent slope obtained by the Planck team with an SZ-selected cluster sample, but extends to lower masses with higher precision., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

Light Axionic Dark Matter, motivated by string theory, is increasingly favored for the "no-WIMP era". Galaxy formation is suppressed below a Jeans scale, of $\simeq 10^8 M_\odot$ by setting the axion mass to, $m_B \sim 10^{-22}$eV, and the large dark cores of dwarf galaxies are explained as solitons on the de-Broglie scale. This is persuasive, but detection of the inherent scalar field oscillation at the Compton frequency, $\omega_B= (2.5{\rm \, months})^{-1}(m_B/10^{-22}eV)$, would be definitive. By evolving the coupled Schr\"odinger-Poisson equation for a Bose-Einstein condensate, we predict the dark matter is fully modulated by de-Broglie interference, with a dense soliton core of size $\simeq 150pc$, at the Galactic center. The oscillating field pressure induces General Relativistic time dilation in proportion to the local dark matter density and pulsars within this dense core have detectably large timing residuals, of $\simeq 400nsec/(m_B/10^{-22}eV)$. This is encouraging as many new pulsars should be discovered near the Galactic center with planned radio surveys. More generally, over the whole Galaxy, differences in dark matter density between pairs of pulsars imprints a pairwise Galactocentric signature that can be distinguished from an isotropic gravitational wave background., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures. We construct a large, redshift complete sample of distant galaxy clusters by correlating Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 12 (DR12) redshifts with clusters identified with the red-sequence Matched-filter Probabilistic Percolation (redMaPPer) algorithm. Our spectroscopic completeness is 97% for ~ 7,000 clusters within the redMaPPer selection limit, $z \leqslant$ 0.325, so that our cluster correlation functions are much more precise than earlier work and not suppressed by photometric redshifts. We derive an accurate power-law mass-richness relation from the observed abundance with respect to the mass function from Millennium XXL (MXXL) simulation, adjusted to the Planck weighted cosmology. The number density of clusters is found to decline by 20% over the range 0.1 $< z <$ 0.3, in good agreement with the evolution predicted by MXXL. Our projected three-dimensional correlation function scales with richness, $\lambda$, rising from $r_0=$ 14 h$^{-1}$ Mpc at $\lambda\simeq$ 25, to $r_0=$ 22 h$^{-1}$ Mpc at $\lambda\simeq$ 60, with a gradient that matches MXXL when applying our mass-richness relation, whereas the observed amplitude of the correlation function at $\left=$ 0.24 exceeds the MXXL prediction by 20% at the $\simeq$ 2.5$\sigma$ level. This tension cannot be blamed on spurious, randomly located clusters as this would reduce the correlation amplitude. Full consistency between the correlation function and the abundances is achievable for the pre-Planck values of $\sigma_8=$ 0.9, $\Omega_m=$ 0.25, and h = 0.73, matching the improved distance ladder estimate of the Hubble constant., Comment: 19 pages, 18 figures

In this work we consider a family of cosmological models featuring future singularities. This type of cosmological evolution is typical of dark energy models with an equation of state violating some of the standard energy conditions (e.g. the null energy condition). Such kind of behavior, widely studied in the literature, may arise in cosmologies with phantom fields, theories of modified gravity or models with interacting dark matter/dark energy. We briefly review the physical consequences of these cosmological evolution regarding geodesic completeness and the divergence of tidal forces in order to emphasize under which circumstances the singularities in some cosmological quantities correspond to actual singular spacetimes. We then introduce several phenomenological parameterizations of the Hubble expansion rate to model different singularities existing in the literature and use SN Ia, BAO and H(z) data to constrain how far in the future the singularity needs to be (under some reasonable assumptions on the behaviour of the Hubble factor). We show that, for our family of parameterizations, the lower bound for the singularity time can not be smaller than about 1.2 times the age of the universe, what roughly speaking means about 2.8 Gyrs from the present time., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, analysis extended, version published in EPJC

We explore the observational adequacy of a class of Unified Dark Energy/Matter (UDE/M) models with a fast transition. Our constraints are set using a combination of geometric probes, some low redshift ones, and some high redshift ones (CMB related included). The transition is phenomenologically modeled by two different transition functions corresponding to a fast and to an ultra-fast transition respectively. We find that the key parameters governing the transition can be well constrained, and from the statistical point of view it follows that the models cannot be discarded when compared to $\Lambda$CDM. We find the intriguing result that standard/input parameters such as $\Omega_m$ and $\Omega_b$ are far better constrained than in $\Lambda$CDM, and this is the case for the derived/output parameter measuring the deceleration value at present, $q_0$., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

In [1] a new method to measure the speed of light through Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) was introduced. Here, we describe in much more detail the theoretical basis of that method, its implementation, and give some newly updated results about its application to the forecast data. In particular, we will show that SKA will be able to detect a 1% variation (if any) in the speed of light at 3$\sigma$ level. Smaller signals will be hardly detected by already-planned future galaxy surveys, but we give indications about what sensitivity requirements should a survey fulfill in order to be successful., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables

In this letter we describe a new method to use Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) to derive a constraint on the possible variation of the speed of light. The method relies on the fact that there is a simple relation between the angular diameter distance $(D_{A})$ maximum and the Hubble function $(H)$ evaluated at the same maximum-condition redshift, which includes speed of light $c$. We note the close analogy of the BAO probe with a laboratory experiment: here we have $D_{A}$ which plays the role of a standard (cosmological) ruler, and $H^{-1}$, with the dimension of time, as a (cosmological) clock. We evaluate if current or future missions such as Euclid can be sensitive enough to detect any variation of $c$., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

A clean measurement of the evolution of the galaxy cluster mass function can significantly improve our understanding of cosmology from the rapid growth of cluster masses below z < 0.5. Here we examine the consistency of cluster catalogues selected from the SDSS by applying two independent gravity-based methods using all available spectroscopic redshifts from the DR10 release. First, we detect a gravitational redshift related signal for 20,119 and 13,128 clusters with spectroscopic redshifts contained in the GMBCG and redMaPPer catalogues, respectively, at a level of $\sim - 10$ km s$^{-1}$. This we show is consistent with the magnitude expected using the richness-mass relations provided by the literature and after applying recently clarified relativistic and flux bias corrections. This signal is also consistent with the richest clusters in the larger catalogue of Wen et al. (2012), corresponding to $M_{200m} \gtrsim 2 \times 10^{14}\,\mathrm{M}_\odot\,h^{-1}$, however we find no significant detection of gravitational redshift signal for less riched clusters, which may be related to bulk motions from substructure and spurious cluster detections. Second, we find all three catalogues generate mass-dependent levels of lensing magnification bias, which enhances the mean redshift of flux-selected background galaxies from the BOSS survey. The magnitude of this lensing effect is generally consistent with the corresponding richness-mass relations advocated for the surveys. We conclude that all catalogues comprise a high proportion of reliable clusters, and that the GMBCG and redMaPPer cluster finder algorithms favor more relaxed clusters with a meaningful gravitational redshift signal, as anticipated by the red-sequence colour selection of the GMBCG and redMaPPer samples., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

In this work we investigate if a small fraction of quarks and gluons, which escaped hadronization and survived as a uniformly spread perfect fluid, can play the role of both dark matter and dark energy. This fluid, as developed in \citep{Brilenkov}, is characterized by two main parameters: $\beta$, related to the amount of quarks and gluons which act as dark matter; and $\gamma$, acting as the cosmological constant. We explore the feasibility of this model at cosmological scales using data from type Ia Supernovae (SNeIa), Long Gamma-Ray Bursts (LGRB) and direct observational Hubble data. We find that: (i) in general, $\beta$ cannot be constrained by SNeIa data nor by LGRB or H(z) data; (ii) $\gamma$ can be constrained quite well by all three data sets, contributing with $\approx78\%$ to the energy-matter content; (iii) when a strong prior on (only) baryonic matter is assumed, the two parameters of the model are constrained successfully., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables

We review the appropriateness of using SNIa observations to detect potential signatures of anisotropic expansion in the Universe. We focus on Union2 and SNLS3 SNIa datasets and use the hemispherical comparison method to detect possible anisotropic features. Unlike some previous works where non-diagonal elements of the covariance matrix were neglected, we use the full covariance matrix of the SNIa data, thus obtaining more realistic and not underestimated errors. As a matter of fact, the significance of previously claimed detections of a preferred direction in the Union2 dataset completely disappears once we include the effects of using the full covariance matrix. Moreover, we also find that such a a preferred direction is aligned with the orthogonal direction of the SDSS observational plane and this suggests a clear indication that the SDSS subsample of the Union2 dataset introduces a significant biased, making the detected preferred direction unphysical. We thus find that current SNIa surveys are inappropriate to test anisotropic features due to their highly non-homogeneous angular distribution in the sky. In addition, after removal of the highest inhomogeneous sub-samples, the number of SNIa is too low. Finally, we take advantage of the particular distribution of SNLS SNIa sub-sample in the SNLS3 data set, in which the observations were taken along 4 different directions. We fit each direction independently and find consistent results at the 1$\sigma$ level. Although the likelihoods peak at relatively different values of $\Omega_m$,the low number of data along each direction gives rise to large errors so that the likelihoods are sufficiently broad as to overlap within 1$\sigma$., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. In this work we present a nonparametric approach, which works on minimal assumptions, to reconstruct the cosmic expansion of the Universe. We propose to combine a locally weighted scatterplot smoothing method and a simulation-extrapolation method. The first one (Loess) is a nonparametric approach that allows to obtain smoothed curves with no prior knowledge of the functional relationship between variables nor of the cosmological quantities. The second one (Simex) takes into account the effect of measurement errors on a variable via a simulation process. For the reconstructions we use as raw data the Union2.1 Type Ia Supernovae compilation, as well as recent Hubble parameter measurements. This work aims to illustrate the approach, which turns out to be a self-sufficient technique in the sense we do not have to choose anything by hand. We examine the details of the method, among them the amount of observational data needed to perform the locally weighted fit which will define the robustness of our reconstruction. In view of our results, we believe that our proposal offers a promising alternative for reconstructing global trends of cosmological data when there is little intuition on the relationship between the variables and we also think it even presents good prospects to generate reliable mock data points where the original sample is poor., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables; accepted in Phys. Cosmography provides a model-independent way to map the expansion history of the Universe. In this paper we simulate a Euclid-like survey and explore cosmographic constraints from future Baryonic Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) observations. We derive general expressions for the BAO transverse and radial modes and discuss the optimal order of the cosmographic expansion that provide reliable cosmological constraints. Through constraints on the deceleration and jerk parameters, we show that future BAO data have the potential to provide a model-independent check of the cosmic acceleration as well as a discrimination between the standard $\Lambda$CDM model and alternative mechanisms of cosmic acceleration., Comment: 11 pages, 2 tables, 2 figures; accepted for publication on JCAP

Aims. We investigate the degree of improvement in dark energy constraints that can be achieved by extending Type Ia Supernova (SN Ia) samples to redshifts z > 1.5 with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), particularly in the ongoing CANDELS and CLASH multi-cycle treasury programs. Methods. Using the popular CPL parametrization of the dark energy, w = w0 +wa(1-a), we generate mock SN Ia samples that can be projected out to higher redshifts. The synthetic datasets thus generated are fitted to the CPL model, and we evaluate the improvement that a high-z sample can add in terms of ameliorating the statistical and systematic uncertainties on cosmological parameters. Results. In an optimistic but still very achievable scenario, we find that extending the HST sample beyond CANDELS+CLASH to reach a total of 28 SN Ia at z > 1.0 could improve the uncertainty in the wa parameter by up to 21%. The corresponding improvement in the figure of merit (FoM) would be as high as 28%. Finally, we consider the use of high-redshift SN Ia samples to detect non-cosmological evolution in SN Ia luminosities with redshift, finding that such tests could be undertaken by future spacebased infrared surveys using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication on Astronomy & Astrophysics

In the strong lensing regime non-parametric lens models struggle to achieve sufficient angular resolution for a meaningful derivation of the central cluster mass distribution. The problem lies mainly with cluster members which perturb lensed images and generate additional images, requiring high resolution modeling, even though we mainly wish to understand the relatively smooth cluster component. The required resolution is not achievable because the separation between lensed images is several times larger than the deflection angles by member galaxies, even for the deepest data. Here we bypass this limitation by incorporating a simple physical prior for member galaxies, using their observed positions and their luminosity scaled masses. This galaxy contribution is added to a relatively coarse Gaussian pixel grid for modeling the cluster mass distribution, extending our established WSLAP code (Diego et al. 2007). We test this new code with a simulation based on A1689, using the pixels belonging to multiply-lensed images and the observed member galaxies. Dealing with the cluster members this way leads to convergent solutions, without resorting to regularization, reproducing well the input cluster and substructures. We highlight the ability of this method to recover dark sub-components of the cluster, unrelated to member galaxies. Such anomalies can provide clues to the nature of invisible dark matter, but are hard to discover using parametrized models where substructures are defined by the visible data. With our increased resolution and stability we show, for the first time, that non-parametric models can be made sufficiently precise to locate multiply-lensed systems, thereby achieving fully self-consistent solutions without reliance on input systems from less objective means., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

In this work we set observational constraints of the Superfluid Chaplygin gas model, which gives a unified description of the dark sector of the Universe as a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) that behaves as dark energy (DE) while it is in the ground state and as dark matter (DM) when it is in the excited state. We first show and perform the various steps leading to a form of the equations suitable for the observational tests to be carried out. Then, by using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) code, we constrain the model with a sample of cosmology-independent long gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) calibrated using their Type I Fundamental Plane, as well as the Union2.1 set and observational Hubble parameter data. In this letter we propose a test to detect the linearity of the dark energy equation of state, and apply it to two different Type Ia Supernova (SN Ia) data sets, Union2.1 and SNLS3. We find that: a. current SN Ia data are well described by a dark energy equation of state linear in the cosmic scale factor a, at least up to a redshift z = 1, independent of the pivot points chosen for the linear relation; b. there is no significant evidence of any deviation from linearity. A fast transition between a standard matter-like era and a late $\Lambda$ cold dark matter ($\Lambda$CDM)-like epoch (or more in general, a CDM+DE era), generated by a single Unified Dark Matter component, can provide a new interesting paradigm in the context of general relativity, alternative to $\Lambda$CDM itself or other forms of DE or modified gravity theories invoked to explain the observed acceleration of the Universe. The cosmological model consisting of an electromagnetic Born-Infeld (BI) field coupled to a Robertson-Walker geometry is tested with the standard probes of SNIa, GRBs and direct Hubble parameter. The analysis shows that the inclusion of the nonlinear electromagnetic component does not contribute in a significative way to the observed expansion. The BI electromagnetic matter is considered with an abundance of $\Omega_{BI}$, that our best fit leads to $\Omega_{BI}=0.037$ when tested with SNIa and the Hubble parameter data (0.1

Model independent reconstructions of dark energy have received some attention. The approach that addresses the reconstruction of the dimensionless coordinate distance and its two first derivatives using a polynomial fit in different redshift windows is well developed \cite{DalyDjorgovski1,DalyDjorgovski2,DalyDjorgovski3}. In this work we offer new insights into the problem by focusing on two types of observational probes: SNeIa and GRBs. Our results allow to highlight some of the intrinsic weaknesses of the method. One of the directions we follow is to consider updated observational samples. Our results indicate than conclusions on the main dark energy features as drawn from this method are intimately related to the features of the samples themselves (which are not quite ideal). This is particularly true of GRBs, which manifest themselves as poor performers in this context. In contrast to original works, we conclude they cannot be used for cosmological purposes, and the state of the art does not allow to regard them on the same quality basis as SNeIa. The next direction we contribute to is the question of how the adjusting of some parameters (window width, overlap, selection criteria) affect the results. We find again there is a considerable sensitivity to these features. Then, we try to establish what is the current redshift range for which one can make solid predictions on dark energy evolution. Finally, we strengthen the former view that this model is modest in the sense it provides only a picture of the global trend. We analyse dark energy models where self-interacting three-forms or phantom fields drive the accelerated expansion of the Universe. The dynamics of such models is often studied by rewriting the cosmological field equations in the form of a system of autonomous differential equations, or simply a dynamical system. Properties of these systems are usually studied via linear stability theory. In situations where this method fails, for instance due to the presence of zero eigenvalues in the Jacobian, centre manifold theory can be applied. We show that a large-area imaging survey using narrow-band filters could detect quasars in sufficiently high number densities, and with more than sufficient accuracy in their photometric redshifts, to turn them into suitable tracers of large-scale structure. If a narrow-band optical survey can detect objects as faint as i=23, it could reach volumetric number densities as high as 10^{-4} h^3 Mpc^{-3} (comoving) at z~1.5 . Such a catalog would lead to precision measurements of the power spectrum up to z~3-4. We also show that it is possible to employ quasars to measure baryon acoustic oscillations at high redshifts, where the uncertainties from redshift distortions and nonlinearities are much smaller than at z<1. As a concrete example we study the future impact of J-PAS, which is a narrow-band imaging survey in the optical over 1/5 of the unobscured sky with 42 filters of ~100 A full-width at half-maximum. We show that J-PAS will be able to take advantage of the broad emission lines of quasars to deliver excellent photometric redshifts, \sigma_{z}~0.002(1+z), for millions of objects., Comment: Matches version published in MNRAS (2012)

The Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) is a 524-orbit multi-cycle treasury program to use the gravitational lensing properties of 25 galaxy clusters to accurately constrain their mass distributions. The survey, described in detail in this paper, will definitively establish the degree of concentration of dark matter in the cluster cores, a key prediction of CDM. The CLASH cluster sample is larger and less biased than current samples of space-based imaging studies of clusters to similar depth, as we have minimized lensing-based selection that favors systems with overly dense cores. Specifically, twenty CLASH clusters are solely X-ray selected. The X-ray selected clusters are massive (kT > 5 keV; 5 - 30 x 10^14 M_solar) and, in most cases, dynamically relaxed. Five additional clusters are included for their lensing strength (Einstein radii > 35 arcsec at z_source = 2) to further quantify the lensing bias on concentration, to yield high resolution dark matter maps, and to optimize the likelihood of finding highly magnified high-redshift (z > 7) galaxies. The high magnification, in some cases, provides angular resolutions unobtainable with any current UVOIR facility and can yield z > 7 candidates bright enough for spectroscopic follow-up. A total of 16 broadband filters, spanning the near-UV to near-IR, are employed for each 20-orbit campaign on each cluster. These data are used to measure precise (sigma_phz < 0.02(1+z)) photometric redshifts for dozens of newly discovered multiply-lensed images per cluster. Observations of each cluster are spread over 8 epochs to enable a search, primarily in the parallel fields, for Type Ia supernovae at z > 1 to improve constraints on the time dependence of the dark energy equation of state and the evolution of such supernovae in an epoch when the universe is matter dominated., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Supplements, 22 pages, 16 figures. In this work we introduce two new polynomial parametrizations of dark energy and explore their correlation properties. The parameters to fit are the equation of state values at z=0 and z=0.5, which have naturally low correlation and have already been shown to improve the popular Chevallier-Polarski-Linder (CPL) parametrization. We test our models with low redshift astronomical probes: type Ia supernovae and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO), in the form of both current and synthetic data. Specifically, we present simulations of measurements of the radial and transversal BAO scales similar to those expected in a BAO high precision spectroscopic redshift survey similar to EUCLID. According to the Bayesian deviance information criterion (DIC), which penalizes large errors and correlations, we show that our models perform better than the CPL re-parametrization proposed by Wang (in terms of z=0 and z=0.5). This is due to the combination of a lower correlation and smaller relative errors. We study the possibility to extract model independent information about the dynamics of the universe by using Cosmography. We intend to explore it systematically, to learn about its limitations and its real possibilities. Here we are sticking to the series expansion approach on which Cosmography is based. We apply it to different data sets: Supernovae Type Ia (SNeIa), Hubble parameter extracted from differential galaxy ages, Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) and the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) data. We go beyond past results in the literature extending the series expansion up to the fourth order in the scale factor, which implies the analysis of the deceleration, q_{0}, the jerk, j_{0} and the snap, s_{0}. We use the Markov Chain Monte Carlo Method (MCMC) to analyze the data statistically. We also try to relate direct results from Cosmography to dark energy (DE) dynamical models parameterized by the Chevalier-Polarski-Linder (CPL) model, extracting clues about the matter content and the dark energy parameters. The main results are: a) even if relying on a mathematical approximate assumption such as the scale factor series expansion in terms of time, cosmography can be extremely useful in assessing dynamical properties of the Universe; b) the deceleration parameter clearly confirms the present acceleration phase; c) the MCMC method can help giving narrower constraints in parameter estimation, in particular for higher order cosmographic parameters (the jerk and the snap), with respect to the literature; d) both the estimation of the jerk and the DE parameters, reflect the possibility of a deviation from the LCDM cosmological model., Comment: 24 pages, 7 figures

Using real and synthetic Type Ia SNe (SNeIa) and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) data representing current observations forecasts, this paper investigates the tension between those probes in the dark energy equation of state (EoS) reconstruction considering the well known CPL model and Wang's low correlation reformulation. In particular, here we present simulations of BAO data from both the the radial and transverse directions. We also explore the influence of priors on Omega_m and Omega_b on the tension issue, by considering 1-sigma deviations in either one or both of them. Our results indicate that for some priors there is no tension between a single dataset (either SNeIa or BAO) and their combination (SNeIa+BAO). Our criterion to discern the existence of tension (sigma-distance) is also useful to establish which is the dataset with most constraining power; in this respect SNeIa and BAO data switch roles when current and future data are considered, as forecasts predict and spectacular quality improvement on BAO data. We also find that the results on the tension are blind to the way the CPL model is addressed: there is a perfect match between the original formulation and that by the low correlation optimized, but the errors on the parameters are much narrower in all cases of our exhaustive exploration, thus serving the purpose of stressing the convenience of this reparametrization., Comment: 21 pages, under review in JCAP

We study the possibility of detecting oscillating patterns in the equation of state (EoS) of the dark energy using different cosmological datasets. We follow a phenomenological approach and study three different oscillating models for the EoS, one of them periodic and the other two damped (proposed here for the first time). All the models are characterised by the amplitude value, the centre and the frequency of oscillations. In contrast to previous works in the literature, we do not fix the value of the frequency to a fiducial value related to the time extension of chosen datasets, but consider a discrete set of values, so to avoid arbitrariness and try and detect any possible time period in the EoS. We test the models using a recent collection of SNeIa, direct Hubble data and Gamma Ray Bursts data. Main results are: I. even if constraints on the amplitude are not too strong, we detect a trend of it versus the frequency, i.e. decreasing (and even negatives) amplitudes for higher frequencies; II. the centre of oscillation (which corresponds to the present value of the EoS parameter) is very well constrained, phantom behaviour is excluded at $1\sigma$ level and trend which is in agreement with the one for the amplitude appears; III. the frequency is hard to constrain, showing similar statistical validity for all the values of the discrete set chosen, but the best fit of all the scenarios considered is associated with a period which is in the redshift range depicted by our cosmological data. We introduce a new form of coupling between dark energy and dark matter that is quadratic in their energy densities. Then we investigate the background dynamics when dark energy is in the form of exponential quintessence. The three types of quadratic coupling all admit late-time accelerating critical points, but these are not scaling solutions. We propose a model based on a DBI action for the unification of dark matter and dark energy. This is supported by the results of the study of its background behavior at early and late times, and reinforced by the analysis of the evolution of perturbations. We also perform a Bayesian analysis to set observational constraints on the parameters of the model using type Ia SN, CMB shift and BAO data. Finally, to complete the study we investigate its kinematics aspects, such as the effective equation of state parameter, acceleration parameter and transition redshift. It has been recently shown that the presence of a vector field over cosmological scales could explain the observed accelerated expansion of the universe without introducing neither new scales nor unnatural initial conditions in the early universe, thus avoiding the coincidence problem. Here, we present a detailed analysis of the constraints imposed by SNIa, CMB and BAO data on the vector dark energy model with general spatial curvature. We find that contrary to standard cosmology, CMB data excludes a flat universe for this model and, in fact, predicts a closed geometry for the spatial sections. We see that CMB and SNIa Gold data are perfectly compatible at the 1-sigma level, however SNIa Union dataset exhibits a 3-sigma tension with CMB.
