Abstract

The squash beetle Epilachna chrysomelina (F.) is an important insect pest which causes severe damage to cucurbit plants in Iraq. The aims of this study were to isolate and characterize an endogenous isolate of Myrothecium-like species from cucurbit plants and from soil in order to evaluate its pathogenicity to squash beetle. Paramyrothecium roridum (Tode) L. Lombard & Crous was isolated, its phenotypic characteristics were identified and ITS rDNA sequence analysis was done. The pathogenicity of P. roridum strain (MT019839) was evaluated at a concentration of 107 conidia · ml–1) water against larvae and adults of E. chrysomelina under laboratory conditions. The results revealed the pathogenicity of the isolate to larvae with variations between larvae instar responses. The highest mortality percentage was reported when the adults were placed in treated litter and it differed significantly from adults treated directly with the pathogen. Our results documented for the first time that P. roridum has potential as an insect pathogen.

Abstract

Abstract Laboratory and field bioassays were conducted to evaluate the pathogenicity of an endophytic and a soil isolate of the entomopathogenic fungus, Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. against different stages of squash beetle, Epilachna chrysomelina (F.) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Both isolates were identified by ITS rDNA sequence analysis. Both isolates were pathogenic to the squash beetle; however, their potential was different according to the conidia concentration and the exposure period. Three days post treatment, (100%) mortality rate was obtained, when the first and second larval instars were treated by the B. bassiana ES (soil isolate) compared to 83.67 and 72.60%, respectively when treated with the endophytic isolate. A percentage of 17.67% malformation occurred among the adults that emerged from treated pupae. The highest mortality percentage under field conditions were 28.67 and 22.33% for larvae and adults, respectively.

Abstract

This work is a first comprehensive survey of true bugs (Hemiptera). A total of 14 species belonging to 14 genera, 12 tribes, 9 subfamilies and 9 families of the suborder Heteroptera and order Hemiptera were recorded and identified in Duhok province, Kurdistan region. A percent 40% of species belonged Pentatomidae family. Date and collecting localities and general distribution with plant association data for each species are given.

Abstract

Albifimbria (=Myrothecium) verrucaria (Alb. & Schwein.) L. Lombard & Crous. has been involved as promising bio-pesticides for wide range of weeds and nematodes. Furthermore, has a promising insecticidal activity because of its ability to produce many enzymes as lipase, protease and kinase that have the ability to degrading the cuticles of insects. Seven isolates of A. verrucaria were isolated from cucurbit plants and the soil. The identification was based on molecular (ITS-rDNA) and morphological analyses. Laboratory bioassays to evaluate the insecticidal activity of A. verrucaria (cgh-38) against different stages of squash beetle, Epilachna chrysomelina (F.) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) were conducted. Three days post treatment, 87.5% mortality rate was obtained when the 1st instar larvae treated, compared to 31.45 for 4th instar larvae. The highest mortality percent was 25 % for adults after 9 days of treatment.

Abstract

The aim of this work is to investigate the population density and infestation percentage of Tuta absoluta on tomato crop Lycopersicum esculentumMill under field conditions in three locations at Duhok province/ Kurdistan region/ northern of Iraq in 2012. The average number of mines/ leaflet, larvae/ leaf and larvae/ fruit during the study season were 2.33, 0.34 and 0.61 respectively. The results showed a significant differences in infestation percentage and number of male per trap among the three locations. The highest percentage of infestation was recorded in September as 74.00, 72.00 and 60.00 for Summel, Shekhan and Zawita respectively. The maximum number of males/ trap/ week was 1205.40 recorded on 26/8/2012 in Summel. Concerning the use of pheromone trap for pest monitoring, linear regression analysis results was significant between trap catches and the number of mines per leaf and the infestation rate of leaves
