Abstract

Few studies have investigated the association between seeing people walk and leisure-time walking, and the role of neighborhood social cohesion among Latinos/Latinx. We examined the association between frequency of seeing people walk within sight of home and leisure-time walking, and whether neighborhood social cohesion explained this association. We utilized cross-sectional data from the 2015 National Health Interview Survey from Latinos aged 18+ years (n = 4,669). A structural equation model was used to estimate the association between seeing people walk and leisure-time walking, and to test the extent to which neighborhood social cohesion accounted for the association. Findings indicate that there is a strong association between seeing people walk and leisure-time walking, and neighborhood social cohesion partially explains this association among Latinos/Latinx. Neighborhood social cohesion may strengthen efforts focused on neighborhood-level behavioral norms that promote walking. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

10. Fostering the use of Learning Health Systems through a fellowship program for interprofessional clinicians

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: To address Australian workforce needs, we developed a Learning Healthcare System (LHS) Academy fellowship program for clinicians. In the Academy, fellows complete foundational coursework, an LHS project, and other professional development deliverables to foster their future as digital health champions within their organizations. In this paper, we describe the 11-month-long program, as well as our evaluation results from the first 2 months of the program. METHODS: In the first week of the program, we sent all fellows an open-ended survey asking fellows to describe their digital health professional identities and what they expected to achieve from the fellowship program. At 2 months, we sent a follow-up open-ended survey that captured identical measures, their perceived barriers to participation in the program, perceived use of topics in the workplace and to their projects, and recommendations for program improvement. We analyzed the open text responses using qualitative content analysis, to identify categories of responses. RESULTS: Overall, 2 months into the program, it was evident that participants were finding the teaching model engaging, useful, valuable, and applicable to their work and projects. Fellows perceived barriers to engagement in the program as balancing other commitments, lacking technical expertise, and having difficulty seeing themselves as leaders. Fellows expected that the program will allow them to implement new models of care, provide them with enough expertise to become leaders and champions in digital health, and become mentors for future generations. As far as changes in their professional identity, there was a notable increase in the number of fellows perceiving themselves as leaders. CONCLUSION: Fellowship programs are one promising means of developing the healthcare workforce in LHS capabilities. Alex Johnson: "This highly decorative detailed, lithographed map city plan of Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, with titles in Latin and Arabic script, was made by the Sudan Survey Department in 1952, four years before Sudanese independence and in the year of the Egyptian Revolution, which supported the separation of Sudan. Since 1899 Sudan was ruled by England and Egypt as Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, and allowed the British to govern through indigenous leaders after the Unilateral Declaration of Egyptian Independence of 1922. Only after WWII the nationalism and tendencies towards an independent country grew and it was not until 1952, when the first major step was made from the side of Egypt. After seizing power in Egypt and overthrowing the Faruk monarchy in 1952, Colonel Muhammad Naguib, whose mother was Sudanese, and later Gamal Abdel Nasser, broke the deadlock on the problem of Egyptian sovereignty over Sudan. The Sudanese independence was declared on January 1st, 1956, with an elected first Prime Minister Ismail al-Azhari and the first modern Sudanese government."

Abstract

Background In collaboration with state, tribal, local, and territorial health departments, CDC established the U.S. Zika Pregnancy Registry (USZPR) in early 2016 to monitor pregnant women with laboratory evidence of possible recent Zika virus infection and their infants. Methods This report includes an analysis of completed pregnancies (which include live births and pregnancy losses, regardless of gestational age) in the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia (DC) with laboratory evidence of possible recent Zika virus infection reported to the USZPR from January 15 to December 27, 2016. Birth defects potentially associated with Zika virus infection during pregnancy include brain abnormalities and/or microcephaly, eye abnormalities, other consequences of central nervous system dysfunction, and neural tube defects and other early brain malformations. Results During the analysis period, 1,297 pregnant women in 44 states were reported to the USZPR. Zika virus-associated birth defects were reported for 51 (5%) of the 972 fetuses/infants from completed pregnancies with laboratory evidence of possible recent Zika virus infection (95% confidence interval [CI] = 4%-7%); the proportion was higher when restricted to pregnancies with laboratory-confirmed Zika virus infection (24/250 completed pregnancies [10%, 95% CI = 7%-14%]). Birth defects were reported in 15% (95% CI = 8%-26%) of fetuses/infants of completed pregnancies with confirmed Zika virus infection in the first trimester. Among 895 liveborn infants from pregnancies with possible recent Zika virus infection, postnatal neuroimaging was reported for 221 (25%), and Zika virus testing of at least one infant specimen was reported for 585 (65%). Conclusions and implications for public health practice These findings highlight why pregnant women should avoid Zika virus exposure. Because the full clinical spectrum of congenital Zika virus infection is not yet known, all infants born to women with laboratory evidence of possible recent Zika virus infection during pregnancy should receive postnatal neuroimaging and Zika virus testing in addition to a comprehensive newborn physical exam and hearing screen. Identification and follow-up care of infants born to women with laboratory evidence of possible recent Zika virus infection during pregnancy and infants with possible congenital Zika virus infection can ensure that appropriate clinical services are available.
