Background: The deaths of American hip-hop and rap recording artists often receive considerable media attention. However, these artists' deaths have not been examined as a distinct group like the deaths of rock, classical, jazz, and pop music artists. This is a seminal epidemiological analysis on the deaths of an understudied group, American hip-hop and rap music recording artists., Methods: Media reports were analyzed of the deaths of American hip-hop and rap music recording artists that occurred from January 1, 1987 to December 31, 2014. The decedents' age, sex, race, cause of death, stage names, and city and state of death were recorded for analysis., Results: The most commonly reported cause of death was homicide. The 280 deaths were categorized as homicide (55%), unintentional injury (13%), cardiovascular (7%), undetermined/undisclosed (7%), cancer (6%), other (5%), suicide (4%), and infectious disease (3%). The mean reported age at death was 30 yrs (range 15-75) and the median was 29 yrs; 97% were male and 92% were black. All but one of the homicides were committed with firearms., Conclusions: Homicide was the most commonly reported cause of death. Public health focus and guidance for hip-hop and rap recording artists should mirror that for African-American men and adolescent males ages 15-54 yrs, for whom the leading causes of death are homicide, unintentional injury, and heart disease. Given the preponderance of homicide deaths in this analysis, premature mortality reduction efforts should focus on violence prevention and conflict mitigation.

The conformation and heterogeneity of lambda-carrageenan, a sulphonated galactan from red seaweed, solubilised in aqueous solvent with the assistance of microwave irradiation, has been assessed by a combination of analytical ultracentrifugation, size-exclusion chromatography, light scattering and capillary viscometry. Preparations appeared generally unimodal on the basis of sedimentation coefficient distributions from sedimentation velocity although at the highest concentrations a shoulder appears with a sedimentation coefficient approximately 1.1 times greater than that of the main component. Even under conditions commensurate with charge suppression simple linear regression was insufficient to represent non-ideal concentration dependence and the extraction of the Grálen concentration dependence parameter ks. A more general fitting algorithm was therefore employed. Mark-Houwink-Kuhn-Sakurada analysis of the change in intrinsic viscosity [η] with molecular weight, together with the Wales-van Holde ratio (combination of ks with [η]) point to an extended flexible conformation for lambda-carrageenan in the (weight average) molecular weight range Mw=340,000-870,000g/mol. Background: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Quarantine Activity Reporting System (QARS), which documents reports of morbidity and mortality among travelers, was analyzed to describe the epidemiology of deaths during international travel., Methods: We analyzed travel-related deaths reported to CDC from July 1, 2005 to June 30, 2008, in which international travelers died (1) on a U.S.-bound conveyance, or (2) within 72 hours after arriving in the United States, or (3) at any time after arriving in the United States from an illness possibly acquired during international travel. We analyzed age, sex, mode of travel (eg, by air, sea, land), date, and cause of death, and estimated rates using generalized linear models., Results: We identified 213 deaths. The median age of deceased travelers was 66 years (range 1-95); 65% were male. Most deaths (62%) were associated with sea travel; of these, 111 (85%) occurred in cruise ship passengers and 20 (15%) among cargo and cruise ship crew members. Of 81 air travel-associated deaths, 77 occurred in passengers, 3 among air ambulance patients, and 1 in a stowaway. One death was associated with land travel. Deaths were categorized as cardiovascular (70%), infectious disease (12%), cancer (6%), unintentional injury (4%), intentional injury (1%), and other (7%). Of 145 cardiovascular deaths with reported ages, 62% were in persons 65 years of age and older. Nineteen (73%) of 26 persons who died from infectious diseases had chronic medical conditions. There was significant seasonal variation (lowest in July-September) in cardiovascular mortality in cruise ship passengers., Conclusions: Cardiovascular conditions were the major cause of death for both sexes. Travelers should seek pre-travel medical consultation, including guidance on preventing cardiovascular events, infections, and injuries. Persons with chronic medical conditions and the elderly should promptly seek medical care if they become ill during travel., (Published 2012. Background: As part of efforts to prevent the introduction of communicable diseases into the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) conducts surveillance for selected diseases in international travelers. One of these diseases, tuberculosis (TB), received substantial attention in May 2007 when the CDC issued travel restrictions and a federal isolation order for a person with drug-resistant TB who traveled internationally against public health recommendations., Methods: Reports of TB in international travelers in the CDC's Quarantine Activity Reporting System (QARS) from 1 June 2006 through 31 May 2007 (year 1) were compared with reports from 1 June 2007 through 31 May 2008 (year 2). These reports were classified using the CDC and American Thoracic Society guidelines and analyzed for epidemiologic characteristics and trends., Results: Among QARS reports, 4.6% were classified as active TB disease and 1.7% as no TB disease. Active TB disease reports increased from 2.5% of QARS reports in year 1 to 6.4% in year 2 (p < .001). The proportion of active TB disease reports leading to a federal travel restriction increased from 6.8% in year 1 to 15.4% in year 2 (p = .08)., Conclusions: The significant increase in reports of international travelers with TB disease likely represents more attention to and a higher index of suspicion for TB. The increased use of federal travel restrictions was associated with the development of new procedures to limit travel for public health reasons. Continued efforts are needed to decrease the number of persons with TB who travel while potentially contagious.

D-Glucose improves memory in animals and humans and in subjects with memory pathologies. To date, the accepted conclusion drawn from animal research is that D-glucose improves memory via alterations in central cholinergic systems. However, recent evidence suggests that a sugar which does not cross the blood-brain barrier also facilitates memory (Talley, Arankowsky-Sandoval, McCarty, & Gold, 1999). The present study examined the effects of peripherally administered L-glucose, a stereoisomer of D-glucose, in male mice. Intraperitoneal administration of L-glucose (300 mg/kg) before testing enhanced place learning in the Morris water maze. Mice injected with L-glucose had significantly shorter escape latencies than mice injected with saline (1 ml/kg). Effects were observed on both reference memory and working memory tasks. L-Glucose did not facilitate performance on either task when it was simultaneously administered with cholinergic antagonists that are excluded from the central nervous system. Thus, simultaneous administration of either methyl-scopolamine (0.3 mg/kg), a peripherally acting muscarinic receptor blocker, or hexamethonium (1 mg/kg), a peripherally acting nicotinic receptor blocker, reversed the effect of L-glucose on memory. These findings suggest that the memory effects of l-glucose may be mediated by facilitated acetylcholine synthesis and/or release in the peripheral nervous system., (Copyright 2002 Elsevier Science.)

Background: The World Health Organization (WHO) criteria for the diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) includes presentation of chest pain over 20 min, evolutionary changes on the electrocardiogram (ECG), and abnormal levels of cardiac enzymes., Hypothesis: A multicenter study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of cardiac troponin I (cTnI) in detecting and ruling out AMI., Methods: The normal range for cTnI in 149 apparently healthy subjects without known history of cardiac or other diseases was 0 to 0.5 ng/ml. Cutoffs of 2.5 ng/ml for c TnI and 5.0 ng/ml for creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB) were used., Results: The diagnostic sensitivity of blood collected from 291 consecutive patients with suspicion of AMI was 95.0 and 96.4%, respectively, for samples obtained at 4-48 h after AMI onset. CK-MB was more sensitive during the early 4-8 h interval (84 vs. 74%); both had 100% sensitivity from 12-36 h. CTnI remained at 100% for 72 h, while CK-MB declined to 57%. The clinical specificity was 97.4 vs. 85.8%, respectively, on non-AMI patients with cardiac and noncardiac diseases, and those with renal disease., Conclusion: cTnI is an excellent marker for detecting and ruling out AMI, because it has better specificity and a wider diagnostic window than the accepted standard, CK-MB.

Unlike isolated single hepatocytes, hepatocyte couplets retain their apical polarity, and, during short-term culture form an enclosed canalicular space or vacuole between the two adjacent cells into which biliary secretion is initiated. Hepatocyte couplets were prepared after partial collagenase perfusion of rat liver. Centrifugal elutriation was used to fractionate the preparation into six couplet-containing suspensions. Image analysis was used to determine the size of cultured couplets. The size of the couplets ranged from 34.1 +/- 0.76 microns and 684 +/- 24.1 microns 2 (mean length and area respectively +/- S.E.M.) in Fraction 2, to 43.7 +/- 0.57 microns and 1033 +/- 33.8 microns 2 length and area respectively in Fraction 7. Glutamine synthetase activity was assessed in each freshly eluted fraction and was shown to be predominant in Fractions 6 and 7. Pretreatment of rats with CCl4, which selectively destroys perivenous hepatocytes, decreased the proportion of couplets in these fractions by over 67%, and their glutamine synthetase activity by over 97%. It was concluded that Fractions 2 and 3 contained predominantly couplets of Zone 1 (periportal) origin, Fractions 4 and 5 those from Zone 2, and Fractions 6 and 7 predominantly couplets of Zone 3 (perivenous) origin. The development of canalicular secretory activity was assessed in the couplets after a 15 min incubation with a fluorescent bile acid, cholyl-lysyl-fluorescein (CLF). This was sigmoidal in all fractions, but slower in the periportal couplets, taking 5.1 h for 50% to show secretory activity in Fraction 2, compared with 2.7 h for Fraction 7. Incubation of hepatocyte couplets with 1 or 10 microM taurodehydrocholate, a non-toxic bile acid analogue, did not influence the rate of development of accumulation of CLF by the couplets or the area of the canalicular vacuole in any fraction. However, it did decrease the CLF content of couplets incubated with CLF for 15 min to a greater extent in those of perivenous origin. After subjecting the couplets to oxidative stress by incubation with 20 microM menadione (2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone), it was evident that periportal couplets were less able to maintain canalicular secretory activity than perivenous couplets.

The alginate depolymerase associated with bacteriophage infection of Azotobacter vinelandii has been used in the analysis of sodium alginate. The enzyme degraded the polysaccharide to a series of oligouronides each containing a terminal 4-deoxy-alpha-L-erythro-hex-4-enopyranuronosyl residue. Analysis of these oligouronides, together with kinetic information, indicated that the enzyme was specific for mannuronic acid-containing regions of the polyuronide. The specificity of the enzyme made it possible to determine the primary structure of the macro-molecule. The phage-induced enzyme was shown to be distinct from the alginate lyase elaborated by the host organisms by its pH optimum, molecular weight, Michaelis constant and stability.

An unidentified pseudomonad isolated by enrichment procedures from decomposing seaweed was grown in defined medium containing sodium alginate as the sole carbon source. The alginate lyase recovered from disrupted bacterial cells was purified by a procedure of (NH4)2SO4 precipitation, gel filtration and ion-exchange chromatography. From sodium dodecyl sulphate/polyacrylamide-gel-electrophoresis experiments a mol.wt. of about 50 000 was determined. The enzyme was active against both algal and bacterial alginate preparations. Kinetic studies together with analysis of the unsaturated oligouronide products of alginate lyase action indicated the enzyme was specific for guluronic acid-containing regions of the macromolecular substrate. The specificity of the enzyme can be used to give information about the primary composition of alginate samples.

Previous studies have shown that performance of a simple, motor task may be degraded by heating the skin when the body temperature is above a critical level of 37.6 degrees C. The experiment reported here confirms these findings for performance in a simple flight simulator. The significance of the results is discussed with reference to flight in high-performance aircraft.

A microorganism isolated from a carbohydrate-rich industrial effluent synthesized an exocellular slime polysaccharide composed of glucose and galactose in a molar ratio of 7.45 +/- 0.68 : 1, and two non-carbohydrate substituents acetate (3--4%) and pyruvate (5--9%). Contamination by rhamnose and mannose was detectable in crude polysaccharide samples. Solutions of the polysaccharide were pseudoplastic, but not thixotropic, and formed gels in the presence of certain trivalent cations.

Essentially the same methanolysis products were obtained after methylation of the slime and capsular polysaccharides from Escherichia coli K12 (S53 and S53C sub-strains) and the slime polysaccharides from E. coli K12 (S61), Aerobacter cloacae N.C.T.C. 5290 and Salmonella typhimurium SL1543. These were the methyl glycosides of 2-O-methyl-l-fucose, 2,3-di-O-methyl-l-fucose, 2,3-di-O-methyl-d-glucuronic acid methyl ester, 2,4,6-tri-O-methyl-d-glucose, 2,4,6-tri-O-methyl-d-galactose and the pyruvic acid ketal, 4,6-O-(1'-methoxycarbonylethylidene)-2,3-O-methyl-d-galactose. All were identified as crystalline derivatives from an E. coli polysaccharide. The structure of the ketal was proved by proton-magnetic-resonance and mass spectrometry, and by cleavage to pyruvic acid and 2,3-di-O-methyl-d-galactose. All these polysaccharides are therefore regarded as variants on the same fundamental structure for which the name colanic acid is adopted. Although containing the same sugar residues, quite different methanolysis products were obtained after methylation of the extracellular polysaccharide from Klebsiella aerogenes (1.2 strain). The hydroxypropyl ester of E. coli polysaccharide, when treated with base under anhydrous conditions, underwent beta-elimination at the uronate residues with release of a 4,6-O-(1'-alkoxycarbonylethylidene)-d-galactose. Together with the identification of 3-O-(d-glucopyranosyluronic acid)-d-galactose as a partial hydrolysis product, this establishes the nature of most, if not all, of the side chains as O-[4,6-O-(1'-carboxyethylidene)-d-galactopyranosyl]-(1-->4)-O-(d-glucopyranosyluronic acid)-(1-->3)-d-galactopyranosyl...
