Abstract

Multifunctional polymer composites with anisotropic properties are attracting interests as they fulfil the growing demand of multitasking materials. In this work, anisotropic polymer composites are fabricated by combining the layer-by-layer (LBL) filtration method with the alternative assembling of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and hexagonal boron nitride flakes (hBN) on natural rubber latex particles (NR). The layered composites exhibit anisotropic thermal and electrical conductivities, which are tailored through the layer formulations. The best composite consists of four layers of NR modified with 8 phr (parts per Hundred Rubber) CNTs (~7.4 wt%) and four alternated layers with 12 phr hBN (~10.7 wt%). The composites exhibit an electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding effectiveness of 22.41+-0.14 dB mm-1 at 10.3 GHz and a thermal conductivity equal to 0.25 W/(mK). Abstract

This work aims to produce polyethylene terephthalate)/multilayer graphene oxide (mGO) nanocomposites via continuous melt mixing in twin-screw extrusion, and to study the changes in crystallization and melt flow behavior. Three mGO contents (0.05, 0.1, and 0.3 wt%) were used. Differential scanning calorimetry analyses showed that at 0.1 wt%, mGO acted best as nucleating agent, increasing the crystallization kinetics as well as the melt crystallization temperature ([T.sub.mc]) by more than 20%. It was also observed that mGO increases the crystals perfection. The nucleating behavior was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and small angle X-ray scattering analyses, which showed a decrease in the composites' crystalline lamella thickness ([l.sub.c]) and long period. X-ray microtomography data confirms that this behavior is significantly affected by the mGO agglomerates distribution and specific surface area inside the polymer matrix. The rheological behavior was studied under two different conditions. It was noticed that under lower shear stresses the mGO particles hinder the polymer flow, increasing the composites viscosity and the pseudo-solid character. However, under higher shear stresses, for example, when flowing through a die, the nanomaterial enters its 'superlubricity state,' acting as a lubricant to the flow. This is industrially interesting, because it may allow the use of less severe processing parameters to produce the nanocomposites. Abstract

Fuel cell technology is one of the emerging energy technologies, both for stationary applications (block power stations) and mobile applications (portable electrical devices). In a standard fuel cell the chemical energy of fuels such as CH3OH or H2 is transformed to electrical energy. High energy efficiency and low emissions make the fuel cell technology attractive compared to traditional combustion engines. The main obstacles to large scale commercialisation of Polymer Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) are rooted in the proton conducting membrane, which is the most important component of this device. The primary requisites of the hydrated membranes are: (a) high proton conductivity at relatively low humidity levels; (b) low fuel permeability; (c) high chemical, thermal and mechanical stability. Among the different polymeric membranes studied for fuel cell applications only the perfluorosulphonic acid ionomers membranes, such as Nafion®, are actually used commercially.
