5. Toward a Pedagogy of Materially Engaged Listening

Abstract

As writing teachers increasingly engage students with audio media, it has become crucial to coach listening explicitly in the classroom, activities that students may otherwise approach passively. In this article I suggest that a rhetorical approach applicable to (or derived from) print texts is not enough to help students listen actively, and offer instead a materially engaged practice of listening that helps students to understand their interactions with compositions on a material level that involves bodily activity. My proposed pedagogy moves students toward a reflective awareness of their practices, encourages purposeful listening, and acknowledges the role that attention plays in listening. Such a pedagogy can help students to engage with audio compositions on their own terms, encourage them to understand listening as a dynamic practice with critical heft worthy of their time and attention, and open insights into affordances of sound that are obscured by print-centric approaches.

Abstract

PURPOSE Access to health care is a long-standing concern for rural patients; however, administrative measures fail to capture the subjective patient experience of accessing health care. The purpose of this review was to synthesize the qualitative literature on patient and caregiver experiences of accessing health care services for chronic disease management among US residents of rural areas. METHODS We searched Embase, MEDLINE, PsycInfo, CINAHL, and Scopus to identify qualitative studies published during 2010-2019. A thematic synthesis approach was used to analyze findings from included studies. RESULTS A total of 62 studies involving 1,354 unique participants were included. The largest share of studies (24.2%) was focused on the experience of patients with cancer, followed by behavioral health (16.1%), HIV and AIDS (14.5%), and diabetes (12.9%). We identified 4 primary analytic themes of barriers and facilitators associated with the experience of accessing health care services for chronic disease management in rural areas: (1) navigating the rural environment, (2) navigating the health care system, (3) financing chronic disease management, and (4) rural life (ie, common elements of a distinct 'rural' way of thinking and behaving). CONCLUSIONS In this comprehensive review, we found that important cultural, structural, and individual factors influenced the rural patient's experience of health care access and use, including barriers and facilitators posed by geographic and built environments, and distinct rural mores. Our findings can inform policies and programs that both facilitate structural aspects of access and include culturally appropriate interventions. Abstract

We estimate long-run impacts to the Pathways to Education program, a comprehensive set of coaching, tutoring, group activities and financial incentives offered to disadvantaged students beginning in Grade 9. High school administrative records are matched to income tax records to follow individuals up to the age of 28, even when they leave the household or province. We find significant positive effects on persistence in postsecondary education institutions, earnings and employment. Program eligibility increased adult annual earnings by 19 percent, employment by 14 percent and reduced social assistance (welfare) receipt by more than a third.

25. Permanent and Transitory Responses to Capital Gains Taxes: Evidence from a Lifetime Exemption in Canada

Abstract

Using panel data on a 20% random sample of Canadian taxpayers, we study behavioral responses to the cancellation of a lifetime capital gains exemption that resulted in increased capital gains taxation for some individuals. The unique setting allows us to distinguish between short-term avoidance responses and permanent responses to capital gains taxes. We show that the exemption did not change the number of taxpayers reporting positive capital gains, and thus unlikely resulted in increased participation in capital markets. However, the exemption cancellation slightly increased capital gains realizations of the existing traders.

Behavioral economics attempts to integrate insights from psychology, neuroscience, and sociology in order to better predict individual outcomes and develop more effective policy. While the field has been successfully applied to many areas, education has, so far, received less attention – a surprising oversight, given the field's key interest in long-run decision-making and the propensity of youth to make poor long-run decisions. In this chapter, we review the emerging literature on the behavioral economics of education. We first develop a general framework for thinking about why youth and their parents might not always take full advantage of education opportunities. We then discuss how these behavioral barriers may be preventing some students from improving their long-run welfare. We evaluate the recent but rapidly growing efforts to develop policies that mitigate these barriers, many of which have been examined in experimental settings. Finally, we discuss future prospects for research in this emerging field.

Abstract

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by cognitive impairment and mental disorders. The actual cause and cascade of events in the progression of this pathology is not fully determined. AD is multifaceted in nature and is linked to different multiple mechanisms in the brain. This aspect is related to the lack of efficacious therapies that could slow down or hinder the disease onset/progression. The ideal treatment for AD should be able to modulate the disease through multiple mechanisms rather than targeting a single dysregulated pathway. Recently, the endocannabinoid system emerged as a novel potential therapeutic target to treat AD. In fact, exogenous and endogenous cannabinoids seem to be able to modulate multiple processes in AD, although the mechanisms that are involved are not fully elucidated. This review provides an update of this area. In this review, we recapitulate the role of endocannabinoid signaling in AD and the probable mechanisms through which modulators of the endocannabinoid system provide their effects, thus highlighting how this target might provide more advantages over other therapeutic targets. Abstract

A series of eight separate studies was conducted using three different Army systems. These studies applied both empirical methods for evaluating the workload associated with the operation of Army systems and analytical methods for predicting that workload. The empirical methods examined were variants of four operator rating scale techniques. The analytical methods scale techniques and a task analysis and simulation technique. The three systems studied included a mobile air defense missile system, a remotely piloted air vehicle system, and a helicopter systems.

45. 1250-P: Developing an "Appropriateness of Glucose-Lowering Therapy" Measure: Qualitative Analysis of Delphi Panel Deliberations.

Abstract

Despite the increasing focus on individualized diabetes care, current diabetes quality measures are still based on meeting generic HbA1c targets. We proposed an alternative measure to assess the appropriateness (vs. over- or under-treatment) of glucose-lowering therapy that accounts for patient complexity and treatment burden. We worked with OptumLabs® to convene a 12-member modified Delphi panel, selected from among its partner institutions and the NQF Measure Incubator® network, to refine the measure. Members included clinicians (endocrinology, primary care, geriatrics), pharmacists, nurses, researchers, and representatives of public and private health plans. In this study, we examined the factors the panel valued in an ideal appropriateness measure. Two researchers independently coded panelists' written responses to a range of questions about the appropriateness measure. Conducting an inductive analysis, codes and overarching themes emerged by consensus. Participants conveyed that an ideal measure must promote individualized care (evidence-based treatments that are consistent with patient psychosocial and biological context, their values and preferences), allow for clinical decision making, and have optimal accountability properties (be easy to implement with reasonable accuracy and reliability, without unintended effects on utilization). Panelists prioritized protecting patient and clinician autonomy, reducing patient treatment burden and clinician punitive potential, and allowing for reasonable clinical exceptions. Our analysis identified factors that stakeholders value in formulating an appropriateness measure for glucose-lowering therapy. Addressing these factors, and those identified by people with diabetes in subsequent research, may produce a quality measure that strikes a patient-centered balance between glucose control targets and the everyday complexities of being, and treating, people with diabetes. Abstract

Toward a Relational Theory of Invention argues that rhetorical invention— the constellation of practices and theories involved in discovering or gathering ideas —can be productively theorized as relational. Rather than being concerned with origins, a relational invention is a means of relating to others and to the world; a relational invention steps away from the idea that writing is controlled by humans, as well as from the elision of human agency, and instead envisions agency as distributed amongst an assemblage of both human and nonhuman actors, like composers, texts, objects, feelings, and sensations. A relational approach to invention thus helps writers to dwell longer in process—and more closely attunes invention to potentiality and becoming—because it as an emergent method of response, in which the composing subject is adapting to and interacting with others in an entangled network. First I review literature on invention, primarily focusing on work on the teaching of writing, arguing that field conversations have characterized invention as either a private, interior process or as a process that is socially constructed and distributed. To remedy this binary, I work to recover moments in formative field scholarship that acknowledge the contributions that material, environmental, and affective agents (and their interactions) make to invention, moments that have been erased by dominant field narratives. Then, I offer three characteristics of relational invention—(1) networked mediation, (2) inviting rhetorics, and (3) complex and interactive systems—and develop a discussion that associates relational invention with theoretical concepts from contemporary theoretical work, primarily in writing ecologies, affect, and new materialism, in order to construct a vision of invention that is dynamic, emergent, and responsive.Finally, I turn to a narrative theory analysis of video-recorded interviews gathered in 2013 at Ohio State’s Digital Media and Composing Institute. The stories participants told about their invention experiences in composing a video project, the Concept in 60, discussed among other concerns the active influences that emotions, time constraints, and participants’ responses to material objects played. My study demonstrates that invention narratives, which capture the nuances of composing in situ, are needed in writing classrooms—where students often encounter invention as rote activities or heuristics that conceal its dynamic making functions. Ultimately, I argue that representing the messy, nonlinear, and nonrational lived realities of invention can enable writers to adapt to new situations, materials, and modes—and to the complex nature of the everyday world within which writing takes place.
