A long-term indwelling catheter may be indicated in clinical situations, such as chronic diseases of the genitourinary or neurological systems. In addition to the risks of infection, trauma, and bleeding, a catheter’s permanence can affect psycho-emotional and socioeconomic dimensions. We aimed to understand how the need to use a long-term indwelling catheter affects this patient’s self-perception, interrelationships, and self-care. We carried out a qualitative, descriptive study based on interviews with 17 patients, and applied thematic analysis and complex thinking. The different prognoses and expectations regarding the catheter influenced self-perception, adaptation, acceptance, or denial. The presence of a catheter, whether as a curative measure or for comfort, can affect self-image and sexuality, and generate insecurities and uncertainties, which require understanding the multidimensionality of situations that suffer interference from the personal, family, and social environment, as well as health systems’ capacity to deal with it. Despite the challenges, the majority of participants reported a favorable disposition towards self-care, whether to enable catheter removal or to prevent injuries in lifelong indications. This study aimed to analyze the role of nurses in hospital management in the face of COVID-19. The study had a qualitative, descriptive, and exploratory approach. The setting was a hospital that was completely transformed to care for patients with COVID-19. At the time of data collection, ten nurses managed the services, and all participated in the semi-structured interview. After thematic analysis, the data were presented in three categories, representing the elements of Donabedian’s triad: structure, process, and result. Category 1 highlighted the hospital structure reconfiguration based on material and people management; category 2 addressed the work process restructuring to achieve goals with safety and quality; and category 3 focused on nurses’ experiences in describing the results achieved and expected. The analysis highlighted the importance of teamwork, involvement, and adaptation of managers in the face of the challenges of a new and life-threatening disease, scarce resources, and the complexity of human relationships in the crisis. Cancer has an associated burden that continues to grow, affecting patients, family caregivers, and the individual's community. The family caregivers' unmet needs may harmfully jeopardize their well-being and the patient's health outcomes. Therefore, it is essential to understand the needs and expectations of family caregivers of cancer patients to develop and improve care practices. The present study aims to explore the needs and expectations of family caregivers of cancer patients in palliative care. This qualitative, descriptive exploratory study will use purposive sampling to recruit family caregivers and healthcare professionals from the palliative care units of two hospital centers in Lisbon and Tagus Valley. First, the Focus group will be performed until data saturation occurs. Then, a conventional thematic analysis will be applied to analyze data with the help of the coding software QDA Miner Lite database. This study's findings will help identify gaps in care and provide data that can support healthcare professionals in providing evidence-based centered care to family caregivers. The worldwide dissemination of scientific production in the health area has been a contribution to evidence-based practice. However, it raises questions that are central to the synthesis of existing evidence and the use of the scientific method to do so, as well as the processes used to transfer and implement knowledge in clinical practice contexts, which facilitate decision-making. We aim to reflect on the methods that allow the synthesis, transfer and implementation of qualitative evidence for the improvement of practices and clinical decisions. Considering the great evolution in the number of qualitative studies, we will approach the elaboration of metasummaries and metasynthesis, as methodological approaches, to integrate, compare and synthesize the results of individual studies within a larger body of evidence, based on rigorous, reproducible methodologies and transparent, to determine what is known in a particular area or if there are evidence gaps that need to be investigated. Throughout the chapter, divided into six parts, the introductory conceptual question will be addressed, followed by the synthesis of qualitative evidence (metasynthesis and metasummaries) and the transfer and implementation of the qualitative synthesis, we present examples of practical cases, allowing then to proceed to the application of the proposal actually illustrated with practical cases. In the Final Considerations, we emphasize that the increase in Qualitative Evidence is a challenge for the development of systematic reviews of qualitative studies, to increase consistency, reliability, rigor and safety in the use of the findings that emerge from these studies for an evidence-based practice, which is only possible with the involvement of all actors (researchers, academics, professionals and citizens). Introduction: Due to its importance for the teaching-learning process, nursing supervision during clinical teaching cannot be undervalued, even in a complex situation such as that of the SARS-CoV-2 infection, due to the risk of compromising the students' socialisation, teaching and assessment process, hindering the integration of theory into practice. Goal: to understand whether the participation in extracurricular activities, which involve a partnership between the nursing school and the hospital, promotes the integration of nursing students in the services where clinical training takes place. Methods: qualitative study. The participants were 13 nurses involved in a project of knowledge transfer to the clinic, in the last semester of their degree. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews between December 2020 and April 2021. Content analysis of the findings was supported by software. Study approved by an Ethics Committee. Results: The following categories emerged: Integration and participation; Motivation; Collaborative work; and Belonging. The feeling of belonging emerges progressively with the integration, opportunities for participation and collaborative work with the clinicians around a goal that is common to all - the knowledge translation project taking place in the service. Conclusions: the existence of an extracurricular activity, with the involvement of researchers, teachers, clinicians and students and with objectives common to all, facilitates integration, increases participation in the service, generates learning opportunities, both in the project and in clinical teaching, allows collaborative work, motivates the student, creates a sense of success and makes them feel they belong to the service. There is universal agreement that health professionals have not implementing evidence-based practice as would be desirable and recommended by science and international institutions with responsibility for the guidelines issued for health contexts. This focus group with eight participants aimed to understand the perspective of students from the undergraduate nursing course on their involvement in a project of knowledge transfer to the clinic. Qualitative analysis followed the coding steps; storage/retrieval and interpretation of the findings and it was carried out by using a software for qualitative data analysis. This study is authorized by an Ethics Committee and respected the principles inherent to the investigation. The four categories that emerged from the content analysis were: Belonging, Using Evidence, Improving Care and Developing Competencies. The analysis of categories, subcategories and verbatim transcripts allowed us to conclude that participation in transference projects for clinics, according to the students, generates learning opportunities about the implementation and communication of evidence, facilitates integration in the service, participation, collaborative work and the development of transversal skills. The article discusses the challenges and importance of advanced nursing and evidence-based practice. It emphasizes the need for nurses to have specialized knowledge and decision-making skills to provide high-quality healthcare while respecting patients' preferences and values. Objective: to identify the instruments used to assess the risk of falls in institutionalized elderly people. Method: Integrative Literature Review, between April and July 2018. Following a pre-defined protocol, with predefined eligibility criteria for the 18 that composed the bibliographic sample. The aim was to answer the question "What are the assessment instruments used to determine the risk of falls in institutionalized elderly people?" Results: the studies use different instruments, isolated or in combination, to determine the risk of falling. Specific scales were to evaluate risk were identified (Easy-Care risk of the Falls, St. Thomas Risk Assessment Tool, Downton Scale, among others), as were scales to assess functional and mental state. Conclusion: the most used instruments for assessing the risk of falling in institutionalized elders are the Timed Up and Go Test and the Performance-Oriented Mobility Assessment, in association with the question "Did you fall in the last 12 months?". Objective: determine the psychometric properties of the safety practices and behaviors dimension of the Scale of Practices and Behaviors of Institutionalized Elderly People to Prevent Falls in a sample of elderly people with cognitive decline. Method: methodological study, with a quantitative approach, to assess the psychometric properties of the mentioned scale in a sample with 102 elderly people with cognitive decline who lived in two long-term care institutions for the public in this age group. Internal consistency evaluation was carried out by calculating the Cronbach's alpha coefficient; interobserver reliability was expressed by Cohen's kappa coefficient; and temporal stability, by obtaining Spearman correlation. Compliance with all ethical procedures was observed. Results: the dimension of safety practices and behaviors showed α = 0.895 for its 11 items. Seven out of the 11 items reached good to excellent agreement among the experts for interobserver reliability. Kappa index values indicated that the instrument is valid and reliable. Safety practices and behaviors were influenced by institutionalization time, being at least 85 years old, and gait skills. Conclusion: the results pointed out that the instrument has good reproducibility and is valid and reliable, which allows its use in clinical practice in elderly people with cognitive decline as well as in research. This study aimed to identify the therapeutic use of wine, in the period between 1701 and 1800, in Portugal, and characterize the nursing care in the preparation and administration of this therapy. The historical method was used. Data collection was done by consulting the primary sources in libraries, with especial emphasis on the library of the Royal Palace of Mafra. The ethical procedures of historical research were taken into account. Wine has been present in the life of man since its earliest days. It was an important element of life and festivities, but also a therapeutic element for the cure of diseases and preparation for eternity. During the eighteenth century it was widely used as a therapy for the treatment of different diseases, including aesthetic treatments. These preparations were carried out in the Boticas, and the nurses were in charge of its administration, as well as in charge of preparing the baths, sheets and cloths of herbs for the application of this medication. Therapy by wine was prescribed by the physician, prepared in the public pharmacies, or in the convents' nurseries, and administered by the nurses, who ensured the effectiveness of the treatment.
