Lunar lava tube caves, due to their unique geographical structure and potential as shelters, have repeatedly emerged as prime candidates or priority areas during discussions on lunar base site selection. However, owing to current technological limitations and the complexities of lunar exploration, obtaining detailed data directly from the interiors of lunar lava tubes poses a significant challenge. Hence, the study of terrestrial lava tubes assumes critical importance. By delving into Earth’s lava tubes, we can gain insights into crucial aspects such as their formation mechanisms, geological characteristics, and stability, which can then inform and guide research on lava tubes found on extraterrestrial bodies like the Moon and Mars. During the data acquisition process for lava tubes, given their intricate spatial configurations and dim lighting conditions, we have opted to employ LiDAR technology to collect point cloud data, revealing the internal structural information of the lava tubes. Consequently, this paper thoroughly explores a method for extracting lava tube parameters and constructing models using this point cloud data. This approach encompasses four key steps: data preprocessing, axis construction of the lava tube, cross-sectional feature extraction, and 3D model reconstruction. Initially, raw data is refined through the creation of point cloud voxels to mitigate noise interference. Subsequently, an iterative algorithm is utilized to obtain the L1-medial skeleton, enabling precise capture of the lava tube’s axis information. Using this extracted axis, we proceed with sampling at fixed intervals to derive cross-sectional points of the lava tube. These points are then utilized to extract fundamental geometric parameters such as cross-sectional area, length, and width. Ultimately, by integrating all these cross-sectional point cloud data, a comprehensive 3D model of the lava tube is constructed. Remarkably, this method achieves a high degree of accuracy, with 99 % of the extracted cross-sectional points exhibiting an error of less than 0.12 m, and 99 % of the model’s positional errors falling within 0.15 m. This not only enhances the precision of parameter extraction but also provides significant technical support for in-depth studies of extraterrestrial volcanic activities and lava tube formation mechanisms. Furthermore, it offers a valuable tool for parameter extraction and research on other irregular natural tunnels.

A new species of the rare shrimp genus Bresilia is described and illustrated from shallow-water lava tubes in Cabo Verde. Characteristics differentiating the new species from its three known Atlantic congeners are listed and discussed. ABSTRACTThis work presents a detailed volcano-geological map of the Northern region of Lanzarote (Canary Islands, Spain). This map is a synthesis of gathered and interpreted field data and geological maps. We have integrated information obtained from: (a) detailed geological field surveys, (b) high-resolution digital elevation models (DTMs), (c) aerial orthophotographs, (d) morphometric analysis of eruptive deposits and volcanic structure (i.e. lava tubes), and (e) integrated with data from previous publications (IGME – Instituto Geológico y Minero de España). This map provides a detailed view of the volcanic diversity of the region and an overview of the lava tube system of La Corona, both of which may be used as references for future research work.

The rapid growth of tourism on Jeju Island has led to an increase in traffic volume, causing accelerated ground subsidence at the intersections between natural caves and roads. Natural phenomena are not caused by a single specific factor, but rather occur through interactions among multiple factors. Therefore, to analyze natural phenomena, it is necessary to consider not only the main effects, but also the interactions among various factors. In this study, the design of experiments was utilized to analyze the vibration-generating mechanism according to the geometrical characteristics of lava tubes, a kind of natural cave. Analysis of variance was used as the main analysis method, and multiple linear regression analysis and decision trees were additionally used. To detect all the interaction effects, multi-way factorial design, which can estimate the effect of any combination of levels, was utilized. The joint orientation, aspect ratio, and cover depth were selected as factors representing the geometrical characteristic of the lava tubes, and vehicle speed was selected as an external influence factor. As a result of the analysis, all the main effects were found to be significant, and the results of the additional two analysis methods were consistent. The two-factor interactions that showed significant results were aspect ratio × cover depth, joint orientation × vehicle speed, and joint orientation × shape ratio. However, it was difficult to analyze the interaction effect using multiple regression analysis and decision tree analysis. Among the two-factor interactions, aspect ratio × cover depth was found to be the most significant, while the main effect of the two interacting factors was the least significant. The most significant effect at a specific level of aspect ratio and cover depth could be analyzed through an interaction plot. Daddy long-legs spiders are common inhabitants of tropical and subtropical caves around the globe. Numerous species have evolved troglomorphisms, including the loss of body pigments and eyes. Here we describe the first troglomorphic pholcids from Australia and Réunion. Belisana coblynau Huber & Clark, sp. nov. was extracted from mining boreholes in the arid West Australian Pilbara region. It represents a genus that is widespread in tropical forests of South and Southeast Asia, reaching the tropical north and east of Australia. Belisana coblynau is thus presumably a relict whose epigean ancestor lived in the area before the aridification of Australia starting in the early Cenozoic. Buitinga ifrit Huber & Cazanove, sp. nov. was collected in Grotte de La Tortue on Réunion, one of the oldest lava tubes on the island (~300,000 years). Congeneric species are known from East Africa, and the genus does not seem to have reached Madagascar. Since Pholcidae do not balloon, the now extinct epigean ancestor of Buitinga ifrit probably reached the island by highly accidental means (such as rafts or storms). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Harrat Khaybar is an active monogenetic volcanic field in western Saudi Arabia that hosts spectacular monogenetic volcanoes and a Holocene volcanic cone with extensive lava fields. The volcanic region is a subject of intensive land use development, especially along tourism ventures, where the volcanic features are the key elements to utilize for increasing visitation rates to the region. The youngest eruption is suspected to be Holocene and occurred fewer than 5000 years ago based on the cross-cutting relationship between the youngest lava flows and archaeological sites. Lava flows are typical, from pāhoehoe to 'a'ā types with great diversity of transitional textural forms. Here, we recorded typical transitional lava flow surface textures from the youngest flows identified by digital-elevation-model-based terrain analysis, satellite imagery, and direct field observations. We performed lava flow simulations using the Q-LavHA plug-in within the QGIS environment. Lava flow simulations yielded satisfactory results if we applied eruptions along fissures, long simulation distances, and ~5 m lava flow thickness. In these simulations, the upper flow regimes were reconstructed well, but long individual lava flows were not possible to simulate, suggesting that morphological steps likely promoted lava ponding, inflation, and sudden deflation by releasing melts further along shallow syneruptive valley networks. Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve (CotM) is a strong terrestrial analog for lava tube formations on Mars. The commonality of its basalt composition to Martian lava tubes makes it especially useful for probing how interactions between water, rock, and life have developed over time, and what traces of these microbial communities may be detectable by current flight‐capable instrumentation. Our investigations found that secondary mineral deposits within these caves contain a range of underlying compositions that support diverse and active microbial communities. Examining the taxonomy, activity, and metabolic potential of these communities revealed largely heterotrophic life strategies supported by contributions from chemolithoautotrophs that facilitate key elemental cycles. Finally, traces of these microbial communities were detectable by flight‐capable pyrolysis and wet chemistry gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry methods comparable to those employed by the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument aboard the Curiosity rover and the Mars Organic Molecule Analyzer (MOMA) on the upcoming Rosalind Franklin rover. Using a suite of methods for chemical derivatization of organic compounds is beneficial for resolving the greatest variety of biosignatures. Tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH), for example, allowed for optimal resolution of long chain fatty acids. Taken together, these results have implications for the direction of mass spectrometry as a tool for biosignature detection on Mars, as well as informing the selection of sampling sites that could potentially host biosignatures. Plain Language Summary: We investigated lava tubes at Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve for their potential to host and preserve evidence of life. Lava tubes are found on both Earth and Mars, and can shield life from extreme environmental conditions such as radiation and temperature fluctuation. We found a variety of mineral deposits on the walls of lava tube caves formed by water‐rock interactions throughout time, which hosted diverse microbial communities. These communities contained the ability to generate energy from both inorganic and organic carbon sources, as well as cycle important nutrients such as nitrogen and sulfur. In addition, we used techniques comparable to those employed aboard the Sample Analysis at Mars instrument on the Curiosity rover to understand whether this life could hypothetically be detected by exploratory missions. Future missions to Mars will undoubtedly be directed toward sedimentary terrains in search for evidence of past life and geologic history. Astronauts will need to find shelter from harsh surface conditions. Natural underground voids provide a readily adaptable habitat for crews to shelter from radiation. Naturally formed caves would be desirable habitat sites, but thick deposits of limestone or other soluble rocks in which karst topography would form have not been identified by current observations. Alcoves, arched recess in steep escarpments, should be widely distributed across the planet and provide an adaptable shelter for astronauts operating on the surface of Mars. Alcoves provide a more stable thermal environment, a reduced radiation environment, shielding from macro‐ and micro‐meteorite impacts, and protection from atmospheric disturbances. Plain Language Summary: Future Mars explorers will face a hostile environment that includes high radiation, extreme temperatures, and high windstorms. Establishing safe living quarters for prolonged stays presents problems like those of early man on Earth. The choices are whether to bring a suitable structure; to build a structure; or to find and adapt underground facilities. Of these choices, finding natural shelters requires less transported materials and less expenditure of energy than surface shelters. Lava tunnels may be useful, but future explorers will require safe quarters in the areas of Mars where sedimentary rocks are common, which will be important exploration targets to determine the geologic history of Mars. Caves in sediments on Mars may be difficult to find, but alcoves may be present. Unlike caves, alcoves have large openings at the surface in rock escarpments. Early humans used alcoves as natural shelters. Even as construction techniques developed, structures were placed within alcoves for additional protection. The Mesa Verde alcoves and pueblos in Colorado are examples of the adaptation of terrestrial alcoves for protected sites. Similarly, future astronauts to Mars could adapt shelters within alcoves as bases for operation. The earliest shelter could be as simple as a sealed tent containing a suitable atmosphere and pressure erected in an alcove. Lava tubes from the eruption of Xitle volcano ~ 2000 years ago constitute one of the most important geological heritages in southern Mexico City. The accelerated growth of Mexico City and real estate developers seriously threaten the conservation of the 73-hectare (hc) Natural Protected Area (ANP) known as Los Encinos, where these lava tubes are located. Therefore, the re-evaluation of this natural area from the geoheritage point of view is urgent. We mapped 4.76 km of lava tubes. Among the outstanding features are the anastomosed, and master tubes in several levels and the flow features such as a lava fall, levees, parietal crusts, and dragged blocks. In addition, we studied the biological, ecological, and environmental aspects of the area, as well as the changes in land use that have impacted the area in the last 20 years, producing the loss of 9 hc of the Los Encinos natural area. Two Streptomyces strains, labeled as MZ03-37T and MZ03-48, were isolated from two different samples, a mucolite-type speleothem and a microbial mat on the walls of a lava tube from La Palma Island (Canary Islands). Phylogenetic analysis based on concatenated sequences of six housekeeping genes indicated that both strains belonged to the same species. The closest relatives for both strains were Streptomyces palmae CMU-AB204T (98.71%), Streptomyces catenulae NRRL B-2342T (98.35%), and Streptomyces ramulosus NRRL B-2714T (98.35%). Multi-locus sequence analysis (MLSA), based on five house-keeping gene alleles (i.e., atpD, gyrB, recA, rpoB , and trpB), indicated that both isolated strains were closely related to S. catenulae NRRL B-2342T. Whole-genome average nucleotide identity (ANI) scores of both strains were in the threshold value for species delineation with the closest species. Both strains presented a G+C content of 72.1 mol%. MZ03-37T was light brown in substrate and white in aerial mycelium, whereas MZ03-48 developed a black aerial and substrate mycelium. No pigment diffusion was observed in both strains. They grew at 10°C−37°C (optimum 28°C−32°C) and in the presence of up to 15% (w/v) NaCl. MZ03-37T grew at pH 5–10 (optimal 6–9), whereas MZ03-48 grew at pH 4–11 (optimal 5–10). LL-Diaminopimelic acid was the main diamino acid identified. The predominant fatty acids in both strains were iso-C16:0, anteiso-C15:0, C16:0, and iso-C14:0. The major isoprenoid quinones were MK-9(H6) and MK-9(H8), and the main polar lipids were aminolipid, phospholipid, and phosphoglycolipid. In silico analyses for functional annotation predicted the presence of gene clusters involved in resistome mechanisms and in the synthesis of described antimicrobials such as linocin-M18 and curamycin, as well as different genes likely involved in mechanisms for active compound synthesis, both already described and not discovered so far. On the basis of their phylogenetic relatedness and their phenotypic and genotypic features, the strains MZ03-37T and MZ03-48 represented a novel species within the genus Streptomyces , for which the name Streptomyces benahoarensis sp. nov. is proposed. Studies of modern carnivore accumulations of bone (i.e., neo-taphonomy) are crucial for interpreting fossil accumulations in the archaeological and paleontological records. Yet, studies in arid regions have been limited in both number and detailed taphonomic data, prohibiting our understanding of carnivore bone-accumulating and -modifying behavior in dry regions. Here, we present a taphonomic analysis of an impressive carnivore-accumulated bone assemblage from the Umm Jirsan lava tube in the Harrat Khaybar region, Saudi Arabia. The size and composition of the bone accumulation, as well as the presence of hyena skeletal remains and coprolites, suggest that the assemblage was primarily accumulated by striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena). Our findings (1) identify potentially useful criteria for distinguishing between accumulations generated by different species of hyenas; (2) emphasize the need for neo-taphonomic studies for capturing the full variation in carnivore bone-accumulating and modifying behavior; (3) suggest that under the right settings, striped hyena accumulations can serve as good proxies for (paleo)ecology and livestock practices; and (4) highlight the potential for future research at Umm Jirsan, as well as at the numerous nearby lava tube systems. Lava caves differ from karstic caves in their genesis and mineral composition. Subsurface microbiology of lava tube caves in Canary Islands, a volcanic archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, is largely unknown. We have focused the investigation in a representative lava tube cave, Fuente de la Canaria Cave, in La Palma Island, Spain, which presents different types of speleothems and colored microbial mats. Four samples collected in this cave were studied using DNA next-generation sequencing and field emission scanning electron microscopy for bacterial identification, functional profiling, and morphological characterization. The data showed an almost exclusive dominance of Bacteria over Archaea. The distribution in phyla revealed a majority abundance of Proteobacteria (37–89%), followed by Actinobacteria, Acidobacteria and Candidatus Rokubacteria. These four phyla comprised a total relative abundance of 72–96%. The main ecological functions in the microbial communities were chemoheterotrophy, methanotrophy, sulfur and nitrogen metabolisms, and CO2 fixation; although other ecological functions were outlined. Genome annotations of the especially representative taxon Ga0077536 (about 71% of abundance in moonmilk) predicted the presence of genes involved in CO2 fixation, formaldehyde consumption, sulfur and nitrogen metabolisms, and microbially-induced carbonate precipitation. The detection of several putative lineages associated with C, N, S, Fe and Mn indicates that Fuente de la Canaria Cave basalts are colonized by metabolically diverse prokaryotic communities involved in the biogeochemical cycling of major elements.

Remote sensing surveys of the Moon and Mars show evidence of lava tubes, which are potential safe havens for human crews and their equipment. Ground penetrating radar (GPR) can be used to map tubes because the void/rock interface at tube ceilings and floors strongly reflects radar pulses. We have tested the capacity of GPR to sense lava tube geometry at Lava Beds National Monument in California, USA. GPR and detailed light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data are presented for two tubes: Skull Cave, with a few meters of overburden, diameter ~10–20 m, and a rubbly floor; and Valentine Cave, with similarly thin overburden, diameter ~1–3 m, and a flatter smoother floor. On both caves GPR clearly resolves the ceiling and permits good estimates of the cave width as validated with LiDAR data. Where GPR fails, the primary cause is inferred to be strong out‐of‐plane effects due to complex 3‐D geometries. Recovery of the floor position requires migrating the GPR data with a 2‐D velocity model, as signal velocity is faster in void space. We find that floor position is recoverable in caves whose voids are taller than the radar wavelength (~3 m in this study). Forward modeling assuming planetary parameters suggests that GPR should be similarly successful on the Moon or Mars. On other planets, lava tubes can offer potential safe havens for human crews and their equipment, so developing methods for identifying and characterizing them from the surface is important. Geophysical methods are ideal tools for exploring lava tubes, among which ground penetrating radar (GPR), which does not affect rocks in the study area, is fast and relatively simple to use. In this study, we have used GPR and other tools to map lava tubes in Lava Beds National Monument, California (USA). We have collected GPR, GPS, and LiDAR data on two tubes. Their depths and widths are relatively simple to find with GPR, while the height and floor are the most challenging characteristics to be determined. Therefore, special numerical modeling algorithms, migration techniques, are used which require a general knowledge of subsurface geometry. Our tests show that with careful algorithm utilization and a good velocity model, GPR data are likely to provide an acceptable tube model. Lava tubes, a major geomorphic element over volcanic terrain, have recently been highlighted as testbeds of the habitable environments and natural threats to unpredictable collapse. In our case study, we detected and monitored the risk of lava tube collapse on Jeju, an island off the Korean peninsula’s southern tip with more than 200 lava tubes, by conducting Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) time series analysis and a synthesized analysis of its outputs fused with spatial clues. We identified deformations up to 10 mm/year over InSAR Persistent Scatterers (PSs) obtained with Sentinel-1 time series processing in 3-year periods along with a specific geological unit. Using machine learning algorithms trained on time series deformations of samples along with clues from the spatial background, we classified candidates of potential lava tube networks primarily over coastal lava flows. What we detected in our analyses was validated via comparison with geophysical and ground surveys. Given that cavities in the lava tubes could pose serious risks, a detailed physical exploration and threat assessment of potential cave groups are required before the planned intensive construction of infrastructure on Jeju Island. We also recommend using the approach established in our study to detect undiscovered potential risks of collapse in the cavities, especially over lava tube networks, and to explore lava tubes on planetary surfaces using proposed terrestrial and planetary InSAR sensors.

Cave lithifying systems are excellent models to study biomineralization in the dark. The Chimalacatepec Lava Tube System in Mexico harbors diverse biospeleothems where previous studies suggest that the formation of opaline terrestrial stromatolites is related to microorganisms in contiguous mats. However, there is no information regarding their characterization and their role in mineral formation. In this study, we characterized the bacterial and archaeal composition of microbial mats and stromatolites and suggested the main processes involved in the genesis of opaline stromatolites. Our results showed that the microbial mats and stromatolites have a similar 16S rRNA gene composition, but stromatolites contain more Actinobacteria, which have been previously found in other lava tubes together with other key bacteria. Microorganisms found here belonged to groups with the potential to fix carbon and degrade organic matter. We propose that the synergic interaction of autotrophic and heterotrophic microorganisms that thrive in the dark might be inducing carbonate precipitation within the Ca-enriched extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), generating opal-A and calcite laminae. The similar 16S rRNA gene fingerprint and the presence of potential pathways that induce carbonate precipitation in opaline stromatolites and microbial mats suggest that microbial mats lithify and contribute to the stromatolite biotic genesis. Yongcheon Cave is a typical lava tube cave, which formed by multiple flows of lava during the Late Quaternary. However, it is also a lime-decorated cave with numerous splendid carbonate speleothems along two parts of the passage. This paper deals with these special unique features of the cave together with their formation processes and the geoheritage significance based on detailed investigation of overlying carbonate sand dunes and speleothems. The cave is about 3360 m long, composed of 2590-m-long main passage and about 370-m-long branch passages. Because the cave contains unexplored passages at the downstream end, it is estimated that the total length can be at least about 400 m longer. The cave contains various microtopographic characteristics such as multiple and various forms of lava coatings on the surface as well as dented features by thermal erosion. They include pahoehoe and aa lavas, rockfalls, lava falls, lava benches, gutters with overflowed lava levees, tube-in-tubes, and lava benches on the floor. Lava flowlines are prominent on the wall, and also, anastomosing branches, lava bridges, and multiple leveled floors are other distinctive morphological features. Carbonate sand dunes were formed by transportation of beach sands nearby and partially overlie two parts of the cave passage. Carbonate sediments are medium sand-sized and are mostly composed of mollusk and coralline red algae fragments up to 60~70% with a minor contribution of benthic foraminifers, echinoderms, bryozoans, and volcanic rock fragments, which may well represent typical temperate carbonate constituents elsewhere. Beach sediments, the source of carbonate dune sands, also show the similar texture and composition. This suggests that the dune sands were transported onto the area by wind along the valleys. Previous age dating results of four carbonate sand dunes including several paleosol layers imply the formation ages of the dunes at each site since the deposition of carbonate sands in shallow seas between 4700 and 6000 years BP due to full deglaciation after Last Glacial Maximum. Carbonate speleothems began to grow in the cave after the deposition of dunes. Detailed mapping of the cave and dune fields strongly suggest that the dune distributions are directly related to the formation of carbonate speleothems. A variety of carbonate speleothems are found in Yongcheon Cave such as soda straws, stalactites, stalagmites, columns, rimstones, flowstones, cave corals, draperies (curtains and bacon sheets), cave pearls, shelfstones, and moonmilks. However, many carbonate speleothems show erratic morphologies that cannot be seen in any limestone caves elsewhere. It is because the formation of erratic speleothems is directly influenced by distribution of plant roots which helped to transport rainwater into the cave and to precipitate calcite mineral. Their unique abundance of carbonate speleothems providing splendid scenic values as well as Jeju's special geological conditions for their formation is considered to be the outstanding universal value for the World Heritage site. Abstract Lava tubes from Lanzarote Island in the Canary Archipelago commonly show white speleothems that stand out from the black basaltic rock. Mineralogical analyses of the speleothems from El Covón and Chifletera lava tubes show that gypsum is the dominant mineral with minor amounts of halite. Speleothems composed of microcrystalline gypsum (up to 150 μm long) are: coatings, globules, or extensive white powder accumulations covering the tube floor. Those composed of macrocrystalline gypsum with millimetric-size tabular and lenticular crystals are: crusts and stalactites. Uranium series dating of speleothems show ages ranging from 6217 ± 1644 yr to 40,039 ± 4748 yr. δ34S and the δ18O of gypsum speleothems (δ34S is 20.97‰ V-CDT and δ18O is 9.78‰ V-SMOW) is similar to that of sulphate dissolved in seawater. 87Sr/86Sr from speleothems (0.708665–0.708976) suggests that the main source of Ca is seawater, but additional Ca contributions from aeolian dust have reduced the Sr isotope values. These data support the idea that gypsum precipitates in the lava tube by evaporation of marine spray or solutions derived from marine spray. Two probable vias for ions input into the lava tube are considered: 1) sea spray circulating through the lava tube; 2) low-frequency rain infiltration leaching the marine spray salts precipitated at the surface. The constant supply of ions from sea spray, air currents in the cave, and the fast, but partial, evaporation due to the high relative humidity in the lava tube favours accumulation of major amounts of gypsum and subordinately halite. Scarcity of precipitation in the western Canary Islands prevents dissolution of gypsum speleothems. Lunar lava tubes are underground channels formed by volcanic eruptions and lava flow during the Moon's volcanic period. Intact lunar lava tubes have the potential to serve as secure shelters for humans and facilities, as they provide a safe and pristine environment with a constant temperature. In this study, the lunar gravity field model derived from NASA's GRAIL mission data is analyzed for detecting of an empty lava tube in the Marius Hills region. Compared to the classical Hessian matrix, the gravitational gradient method used in this study is capable of detecting anomaly signals both in the north-south and east-west directions. Using this method, we detect a north-south anomaly signal in the Marius Hills region, located at 57.5°W and 14.3°N, indicating a negative density anomaly near the known lunar sinuous rilles and the Marius Hills Hole skylight. This suggests the presence of a potential lava tube, which is confirmed by the results of the forward method and lunar radar echo data. The extent of the lava tube is estimated with the forward method to be ∼60 km in length, ∼9 km in width, ∼605 m in depth, and ∼55 m in height. Furthermore, the gradient features indicate that the skylight located on the eastern side of the lava tube could serve as an entry to the main part of the lava tube. • A north-south oriented lava tube is detected in the Marius Hills region of the moon using gravity gradient techniques. • Leveraging the forward method, the shape, range, and geometric parameters of the lava tube are estimated. • The prediction is strongly supported by both nearby geological features and lunar radar measurements. Tube-fed structure occurs as a general phenomenon in Tengchong basic lavas, such as lava tubes, lava plugs and tube-related collapse depressions. We deduced the development of Laoguipo lava flows, which is the longest lava tube (Jingfudong lava tube) evolved in Tengchong volcanic area. Following the detailed documentation of the tube morphology of the Jingfudong lava tube, we propose that the Jingfudong lava tube was formed through vertical coalescence of at least three tubes. The coalescence and bifurcation process are re-constructed by interpretation of tube floor continuity, the distribution of remnant tubes and the scales of lava tube branches (shapes of cross sections).

Caves can serve as major outposts for future human exploration of the Moon and Mars. In addition, caves can protect people and electronic equipment from external hazards such as cosmic ray radiation and meteorites impacts and serve as a shelter. Numerous pit craters have been discovered on the Moon and Mars and are potential entrances to caves; the principal topographic features of pit craters are their visible internal floors and pits with vertical walls. We have devised two topographical models for investigating the relationship between the topographical characteristics and the inner void of pit craters. One of our models is a concave floor void model and the other is a convex floor tube model. For each model, optical photographs have been obtained under conditions similar to those in which optical photographs have been acquired for craters on the Moon and Mars. Brightness profiles were analyzed for determining the profile patterns of the void pit craters. The profile patterns were compared to the brightness profiles of Martian pit craters, because no good-quality images of lunar pit craters were available. In future studies, the model profile patterns will be compared to those of lunar pit craters, and the proposed method will likely become useful for finding lunar caves and consequently for planning lunar bases for manned lunar expeditions.

Karst caves host most European Paleolithic sites. Near the Eurasian-Arabian Plate convergence in the Caucasus' Lower Chegem Formation, Saradj-Chuko Grotto (SCG), a lava tube, contains 16 geoarchaeologically distinct horizons yielding modern to laminar obsidian-rich Middle Paleolithic (MP) assemblages. Since electron spin resonance (ESR) can date MP teeth with 2−5% uncertainty, 40 sediment samples were analyzed by neutron activation analysis to measure volumetrically averaged sedimentary dose rates. SCG’s rhyolitic ignimbrite walls produce very acidic clay-rich conglomeratic silts that retain 16−24 wt% water today. In Layers 6A-6B, the most prolific MP layers, strongly decalcified bones hinder species identification, but large ungulates inhabited deciduous interglacial forests. Unlike in karst caves, most SCG's layers had sedimentary U concentrations > 4 ppm and Th, > 12 ppm, but Layer 6B2 exceeded 20.8 ppm U, and Layer 7, > 5 ppm Th. Such high concentrations emit dose rates averaging ~ 1.9−3.7 mGy/y, but locally up to 4.1−5.0 mGy/y. Within Layer 6, dose rate variations reflect bone occurrence, necessitating that several samples must be geochemically analyzed around each tooth to ensure age accuracy. Coupled with dentinal dose rates up to 3.7−4.5 mGy/y, SCG's maximum datable ages likely averages ~ 500−800 ka.
