Abstract

Tracer diffusion of all constituting elements is studied at various temperatures in a series of (CoCrFeMn)$_{100-x}$Ni$_x$ alloys with compositions ranging from pure Ni to the equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy. At a given homologous temperature, the measured tracer diffusion coefficients change non-monotonically along the transition from pure Ni to the concentrated alloys and finally to the equiatomic CoCrFeMnNi alloy. This is explained by atomistic Monte-Carlo simulations based on a modified embedded-atom potentials, which reveal that local heterogeneities of the atomic configurations around a vacancy cause correlation effects and induce significant deviations from predictions of the random alloy model., Comment: 16 pages; 10 figures

Abstract

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis was applied to investigate the thermal stability under ultra-high vacuum environment of the surface oxide film formed by electrochemical passivation of a newly-designed Cr15Fe10Co5Ni60Mo10 (at. %) multi-principal element alloy and providing the alloy superior localized corrosion resistance compared to conventional stainless steels and alloys. A spectral decomposition methodology involving the subtraction of Auger peaks overlapping the Fe2p and Co2p core level regions was applied for quantification of the oxide film composition and thickness. The results show that, at 100 °C, the passive oxide film is mainly dehydrated and dehydroxylated. Obvious loss of Ni hydroxide and conversion of Mo(VI) to Mo(IV) species are observed at 200 °C, with further reduction of Mo species to Mo(III) observed at 300 °C. In this temperature range, the total cation quantity in the oxide film remains stable despite the compositional alteration. At 400 °C, Cr(III) oxide forms at the expense of Fe and Mo oxides, resulting in an oxide film essentially consisting of chromium oxide. At 500 °C, Cr(III) oxide is eliminated, making the passive film unstable at this temperature. Possible Cr oxide removal mechanisms are discussed.

Abstract

Despite a huge expansion of research on compositionally complex alloys, CCA (such as the entropy alloys, HEA and the corresponding glassy alloys) their comprehension is still limited, which is detrimental both for the design of CCAs and for their application. The broad compositional range in CCAs enables simple tuning of their properties by varying the contents of their constituent elements. Accordingly, the study of transition from CCA to conventional alloy, CA composed from the same constituents is important, both for understanding the formation of solid solutions in CCAs and for proper evaluation of their potential with respect to that of CAs. However, this transition has so far been studied systematically in only two types of alloys: isopleths of the Cantor alloy and glassy TiZrNbCuNi/Co alloys with variable Co, Ni or Cu content (Materials 14 (2021) 5824 and ref. therein). In both alloy systems the variation of a given property with composition depends sharply on the selected principal component and can be either monotonic (like that in the ideal solid solution) or non-monotonic. When the variation is non- monotonic, the maximum value of the selected property is usually outside of HEA composition range.

Abstract

Despite a huge expansion of research on compositionally complex alloys, CCA (such as the approximately equimolar, multi-component high- entropy alloys, HEA and the corresponding high- entropy glassy alloys), their basic understanding is still limited, which is detrimental both for the design of CCAs and for their application. In particular, the prediction of compositions capable of forming random solid solutions (RSSs) and the prediction of their properties is still a problem. Nevertheless, some properties of a few CCAs exceed those of conventional alloys (CA) [1].

Abstract

Depth variation at constant load in instrumented nano-indentation was used to measure activation volume controlling shear band formation in the Mg65Cu12.5Ni12.5(Ce75La25)10 metallic glass. A series of measurements revealed a large scattering of the data spanning from 100 Å3 to 800 Å3. The distribution of values, which is not following a normal one, may be attributed to the atomic structure of metallic glasses with the absence of long range order, leading to different volume fraction of shear bands for independent experiments. Activation volume is analyzed considering the variation of shear band volume fraction leading to a unique value of a true activation volume. Abstract

International audience; In order to explore precipitation hardening, carbonitrides precipitates are formed within a CrMnFeCoNi high entropy alloy (HEA). The matrix and the precipitates are independently characterized by electron probe microanalysis, atom probe tomography, transmission electron microscopy, and nanoindentation. The matrix is a face-centered cubic multi-component non-equimolar solid-solution, that is, Cr depleted, which is stable and interestingly as hard as its equimolar counterpart. The precipitates are stable chromium carbonitrides with a micron-scale platelets morphology. They exhibit a hexagonal structure, are semi-coherent with the matrixm and are harder than the matrix.

Abstract

International audience; High entropy alloys are single phase metallic materials, composed of more than 4 elements in equi-atomic proportionwhich is the maximum in the configurational entropy. In order to study the thermodynamics of those alloys, anequimolar CrMnFeCoNi HEA was processed by electromagnetic melting, casting and annealing under varyingconditions (cooling rate and annealing duration) and the evolution of the structure and microstructure was studied. Aftercasting, a dendritic microstructure was formed whose characteristic length depends on the cooling rate. Annealing leadsto a chemical homogenization of the microstructure. Indeed a true solid-solution down to the atomic scale wasevidenced in an HEA by atom probe tomography. It was shown that this face-centered cubic single-phase solid solutionis the high temperature stable state of the equimolar CrMnFeCoNi alloy. By analogy with completely miscible binaryalloy, the CrMnFeCoNi HEA can be described by a schematic phase diagram of the CrFeCo - MnNi system consistingof a liquidus and a solidus.

Abstract

In the framework of ODS (Oxide Dispersion Strengthened) steels development for application as core materials in future nuclear reactors, a new process based on a reactive-inspired ball-milling, which consists in using YFe3 and Fe2O3 instead of Y2O3, and the influence of synthesis conditions on nano-oxides features were studied. To do so, ODS steels were prepared by ball-milling and annealing and then multi-scale characterizations were done after each step of the process. Atom probe tomography and small angle neutron scattering were used. It was shown that reactive-inspired ball-milling process was efficient for ODS steel synthesis, although it does not modify nano-oxides features. Broadly speaking, the nature of milling reactants has no impact on nano-oxides formation. Moreover it was proven that nano-oxides nucleation can start during ball-milling and afterwards it continues during annealing with a very fast kinetic. The features of nano-oxides formed in this way can be controlled through variations of ball-milling parameters (intensity, temperature and atmosphere) and annealing parameters (duration and temperature). Finally, it was shown that controlling ball-milling conditions was necessary to control the ODS steel final state.; Dans le cadre du développement des aciers ODS (Oxide Dispersion Strengthened) pour le cœur des réacteurs nucléaires du futur, ce travail s'est focalisé sur l'étude d'une nouvelle voie de synthèse inspirée du broyage réactif, consistant à remplacer le réactif Y2O3 par YFe3 et Fe2O3, et sur l'influence des conditions de synthèse sur les caractéristiques des nano-oxydes. Pour cela, des aciers ODS ont été synthétisés par broyage et recuit et des caractérisations multi-échelles ont été effectuées après chaque étape de la synthèse. En particulier, on a utilisé la sonde atomique tomographique et la diffusion des neutrons aux petits angles. On a ainsi montré que le procédé inspiré du broyage réactif permet la synthèse d'un acier ODS mais qu'il ne modifie pas les caractéristiques des nano-oxydes. Plus généralement, la forme des réactifs de broyage n'a pas d'influence sur la formation des nano-oxydes. Ensuite, on a mis en évidence que la germination des nano-oxydes pouvait commencer au cours du broyage avant de se poursuivre avec une cinétique très rapide au cours du recuit. Les caractéristiques des nano-oxydes ainsi formés peuvent être contrôlées en faisant varier les paramètres de broyage (intensité, température et atmosphère) et de recuit (durée et température). Enfin, on a montré qu'il était nécessaire de contrôler les conditions de broyage pour maîtriser l'état final d'un acier ODS.
