1. Leveraging Compliant Tactile Perception for Haptic Blind Surface Reconstruction

Abstract

Non-flat surfaces pose difficulties for robots operating in unstructured environments. Reconstructions of uneven surfaces may only be partially possible due to non-compliant end-effectors and limitations on vision systems such as transparency, reflections, and occlusions. This study achieves blind surface reconstruction by harnessing the robotic manipulator's kinematic data and a compliant tactile sensing module, which incorporates inertial, magnetic, and pressure sensors. The module's flexibility enables us to estimate contact positions and surface normals by analyzing its deformation during interactions with unknown objects. While previous works collect only positional information, we include the local normals in a geometrical approach to estimate curvatures between adjacent contact points. These parameters then guide a spline-based patch generation, which allows us to recreate larger surfaces without an increase in complexity while reducing the time-consuming step of probing the surface. Experimental validation demonstrates that this approach outperforms an off-the-shelf vision system in estimation accuracy. 6. Regularity of a D-Module along a submanifold

Abstract

We study how regularity along a submanifold of a differential or microdifferential system can propagate from a family of submanifolds to another. The first result is that a microdifferential system regular along a lagrangian foliation is regular. However, when restricted to a fixed submanifold the corresponding result is true only under a condition on the characteristic variety.

Abstract

A holonomic D-module on a complex analytic manifoldadmits always a b-function along any submanifold. If the module is regular, itadmits also a regular b-function, that is a b-function with a condition on the order of the lower terms of the equation.There is a weaker condition of regularity: regularity alonga submanifold. We prove that a module which is regular alonga submanifold admits a regular b-function along this submanifold.

Abstract

In the theory of Lie groups, the irreducibility of a unitary representation is not preserved in general by restriction to a subgroup. Kirillov's conjecture says that it is preserved for the groups Gl(n,R) or Gl(n,C) when the subgroup is the subgroup of matrices leaving invariant a non zero vector. This conjecture was proved by Barush using a detailed study of nilpotent orbits. In fact, it is not difficult to see that the conjecture is equivalent to the fact that some system of partial differential equations has no singular distributions as solutions. This system of equations is a regular holonomic D-module and we give a proof of the result by an explicit calculation of the roots of the b-functions associated to this D-module.

19. PM10 Chemical Profile during North African Dust Episodes over French West Indies

Abstract

The French West Indies are periodically affected by North African dust episodes (NADE) resulting in PM10 concentrations exceeding air quality standards. The aim of the present study was to decipher the PM10 chemical profile during NADE over Guadeloupe. PM10 samples were collected daily at a rural site and an urban site during five episodes between April and October in 2017. During these events, the median PM10 mass concentrations were, on average, 2 to 5 times higher than in the post-episode baseline period. Sampled filters were analyzed for their quantification of chemical constituents including carbonaceous fractions (elemental and organic carbon, EC/OC), anions/cations and levoglucosan, 51 elements, and 57 selected organic species. An orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) was conducted to identify the specific chemical profile of PM10 during NADE: 16 elements were identified as the most discriminant between the NADE and the control samples with mass concentration levels twice as high during a NADE. Among them, only two (Mn and V) are classified as emerging pollutant while no limit values exist for the other ones. The extensive characterization of the NADE PM10 chemical profile we performed is a key step to assess the chemical exposure of French West Indies populations during such events.

20. Phosphate Buffer Solubility and Oxidative Potential of Single Metals or Multielement Particles of Welding Fumes

Abstract

To evaluate the chemical behavior and the health impact of welding fumes (WF), a complex and heterogeneous mixture of particulate metal oxides, two certified reference materials (CRMs) were tested: mild steel WF (MSWF-1) and stainless steel WF (SSWF-1). We determined their total chemical composition, their solubility, and their oxidative potential in a phosphate buffer (PB) solution under physiological conditions (pH 7.4 and 37 °C). The oxidative potential (OPDTT) of WF CRMs was evaluated using an acellular method by following the dithiothreitol (DTT) consumption rate (µmol DTT L−1 min−1). Pure metal salts present in the PB soluble fraction of the WF CRMs were tested individually at equivalent molarity to estimate their specific contribution to the total OPDTT. The metal composition of MSWF-1 consisted mainly of Fe, Zn, Mn, and Cu and the SSWF-1 composition consisted mainly of Fe, Mn, Cr, Ni, Cu, and Zn, in diminishing order. The metal PB solubility decreased from Cu (11%) to Fe (approximately 0.2%) for MSWF-1 and from Mn (9%) to Fe (DTT of SSWF-1 is 2.2 times the OPDTT of MSWF-1 due to the difference in oxidative capacity of soluble transition metals. Cu (II) and Mn (II) are the most sensitive towards DTT while Cr (VI), Fe (III), and Zn (II) are barely reactive, even at higher concentrations. The OPDTT measured for both WF CRMs extracts compare well with simulated extracts containing the main metals at their respective PB-soluble concentrations. The most soluble transition metals in the simulated extract, Mn (II) and Cu (II), were the main contributors to OPDTT in WF CRMs extracts. Mn (II), Cu (II), and Ni (II) might enhance the DTT oxidation by a redox catalytic reaction. However, summing the main individual soluble metal DTT response induces a large overestimation probably linked to modifications in the speciation of various metals when mixed. The complexation of metals with different ligands present in solution and the interaction between metals in the PB-soluble fraction are important phenomena that can influence OPDTT depletion and therefore the potential health effect of inhaled WF.

The discovery of two hadrosaur fragments (maxilla and quadrate) in marine sediments of the end of the Cretaceous (uppermost Maastrichtian) is reported. Although this type of taphocoenosis is not exceptional for continental organisms, its situation at approximately 1 m under the iridium zone of the K/T boundary deserves to be emphasized.

35. Anatomy and Phylogeny of an Exceptionally Large Sebecid (Crocodylomorpha) from the Middle Eocene of Southern France.

Abstract

Post Cretaceous–Paleogene (K–Pg) boundary continental ecosystems of Europe host a distinctive assemblage of derived neosuchians related to modern semi-aquatic lineages, including the alligatoroid Diplocynodon and the crocodyloid Asiatosuchus but also a less well-understood group known as the Planocraniidae. Yet, uniquely in its faunal composition, Europe also preserves some of the last representatives of Notosuchia, a group that previously underwent a successful radiation in terrestrial ecosystems of the Cretaceous, especially in Gondwana. Although Europe harbored a few members of Sebecosuchia during the Cretaceous, their affinities with post-K–Pg forms is not ascertained, in part due to their rare and fragmentary nature on both sides of the stratigraphic boundary. Paleogene European sebecosuchians have been reported from the Eocene of France, Germany, Portugal, and Spain. Resolving their phylogenetic position may shed light on their suspected Gondwanan affinities. Based on new cranial and postcranial remains, we provide a description of the most complete and largest European sebecosuchian to date from the middle Eocene (Bartonian) of Issel and Réalmont, southern France. Dentaneosuchus gen. nov. is proposed to designate the taxon originally described as Atacisaurus crassiproratus. A phylogenetic analysis recovers Dentaneosuchus crassiproratus as the basalmost branching member of Sebecidae, a clade otherwise known from abundant specimens from the Paleogene and Miocene of South America. Among post-K–Pg sebecids, Dentaneosuchus crassiproratus rivalled in size with Barinasuchus arveloi from the Miocene of Venezuela, demonstrating that sebecids achieved the status of apex predators in terrestrial ecosystems of both Europe and South America. Abstract

Adrenomedullin (ADM) regulates vascular tone and endothelial permeability during sepsis. Levels of circulating biologically active ADM (bio-ADM) show an inverse relationship with blood pressure and a direct relationship with vasopressor requirement. In the present prospective observational multinational Adrenomedullin and Outcome in Sepsis and Septic Shock 1 (, AdrenOSS-1) study, we assessed relationships between circulating bio-ADM during the initial intensive care unit (ICU) stay and short-term outcome in order to eventually design a biomarker-guided randomized controlled trial.AdrenOSS-1 was a prospective observational multinational study. The primary outcome was 28-day mortality. Secondary outcomes included organ failure as defined by Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score, organ support with focus on vasopressor/inotropic use, and need for renal replacement therapy. AdrenOSS-1 included 583 patients admitted to the ICU with sepsis or septic shock.Circulating bio-ADM levels were measured upon admission and at day 2. Median bio-ADM concentration upon admission was 80.5 pg/ml [IQR 41.5-148.1 pg/ml]. Initial SOFA score was 7 [IQR 5-10], and 28-day mortality was 22%. We found marked associations between bio-ADM upon admission and 28-day mortality (unadjusted standardized HR 2.3 [CI 1.9-2.9]; adjusted HR 1.6 [CI 1.1-2.5]) and between bio-ADM levels and SOFA score (p0.0001). Need of vasopressor/inotrope, renal replacement therapy, and positive fluid balance were more prevalent in patients with a bio-ADM70 pg/ml upon admission than in those with bio-ADM ≤ 70 pg/ml. In patients with bio-ADM70 pg/ml upon admission, decrease in bio-ADM below 70 pg/ml at day 2 was associated with recovery of organ function at day 7 and better 28-day outcome (9.5% mortality). By contrast, persistently elevated bio-ADM at day 2 was associated with prolonged organ dysfunction and high 28-day mortality (38.1% mortality, HR 4.9, 95% CI 2.5-9.8).AdrenOSS-1 shows that early levels and rapid changes in bio-ADM estimate short-term outcome in sepsis and septic shock. Abstract

Precise measurements of the secondary cosmic ray fluxes and of secondary-over-primary flux ratios as functions of rigidity are essential for cosmic ray propagation study. We report the properties of heavy secondary cosmic ray fluorine (F) nuclei in the rigidity R range 2GV to 3 TV observed by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment (AMS-02) on the International Space Station. The secondary-over-primary ratios fluorine-to-silicon and boron-to-oxygen (or boron-to-carbon) will be discussed, showing that the heavy cosmic rays, from fluorine to silicon, have different propagation properties compared to those of light cosmic rays, from helium to oxygen. The properties of cosmic-ray sodium and aluminum nuclei, which are partly secondary and partly primary, will also be presented.

Abstract

A holonomic D-module on a complex analytic manifold admits always a b-function along any submanifold. If the module is regular, it admits also a regular b-function, that is a bfunction with a condition on the order of the lower terms of the equation. There is a weaker condition of regularity: regularity along a submanifold. We prove that a module which is regular along a submanifold admits a regular b-function along this submanifold., "Microlocal Analysis and Singular Perturbation Theory".
