In this essay we argue that one way to combat the depressing creep of the neoliberal university is to recuperate and re-use consciousness raising (CR) in teaching, administration, research, and engagement. Consciousness-raising can be roughly characterised as first, an apprehending of one’s place in a system, and second, feeling inspired to do something about that system. We propose that CR is an especially helpful way to think about our work in contexts where more structural changes to advance social justice agendas appear to have stalled, or even to have taken a step backwards. There may be potential to co-opt the increasing dominance of individualism in our worlds, by revisiting the role that individual reflection and development plays in social change, as conceptualised within CR. Through examples drawn from our own experiences, we demonstrate how CR happens in our day-to-day interactions, reigniting a sense of meaning in our working lives whilst potentially creating ripples of positive change. We thus call not just for revisiting, but also for reconceptualising and reframing CR rooted in feminist and intersectional praxis as a methodology for academic activism in the contemporary business school.

Substandard labour practices continue to be observed in global value chains (GVCs), even where there are strong legal frameworks and in those that engage with ethical accreditation schemes. We argue that this indicates a slow rate of progressive change in GVC labour governance, that is due in part to the lack of attention paid to the interplay of men, masculinities and GVC operation. We offer a reading of Jeff Hearn’s ‘hegemony of men’ framework as a means of showing and deconstructing men’s power within GVC labour standards and welfare programmes, to understand how particular forms of masculinity are reproduced to detrimental effect. Our critical review of the GVC literature emphasises the need to recognise how the social category of ‘men’ has both material and discursive effects on GVCs. We then present a research agenda that emphasises how an intersectional lens on the hegemony of men can surface how complexities of race, class, caste and other experiences of working in GVCs interact with dominant forms of masculinity. This would significantly enhance our understanding of how governance mechanisms might be better designed and operationalised in GVCs, for the betterment of all.

To examine whether integration of Health Information Exchange (HIE) services into office workflow would have an impact on ED visits and unplanned 30-day readmission amongst the patients who were treated at the medical practice. We designed and implemented a training program at a medical practice in Western New York over a period of three months between November 2016 and January 2017. During the program, a group of health IT professionals and clinical specialists trained the staff on how to appropriately use and efficiently integrate the HIE services in their workflow. We measured the effectiveness of the program using both qualitative and quantitative methods. We employed an Interrupted Time Series (ITS) analysis to examine the effectiveness of the program on reducing the number of patients who experience an ED visit or an unplanned hospital readmission within 30 days of initial discharge. After the implementation of the training program, the rate of unplanned hospital readmissions reduced by 2.7 patients per 1000 members per month and the rate of ED visits reduced by 6.3 patients per 1000 members per month. The results indicate that educating medical practices on how to efficiently utilize the HIE services, and especially the notification systems will significantly reduce the rate of ED utilization and unplanned 30-day hospital readmissions amongst the patients of medical practices.

Emotional energy is key to disruptive institutional work, but we still know little about what it is, and importantly, how it is refuelled. This empirical paper presents an in-depth case study of ‘No More Page 3’ (#NMP3), an Internet-based feminist organization which fought for the removal of sexualized images of women from a UK newspaper. Facing online misogyny, actors engage in ‘emotional energy replenishment’ to sustain this disruptive institutional work amid emotional highs and lows. We introduce ‘affective embodiment’ – the corporeal and emotional experiences of the institution – as providing emotional energy in relation to disruptive institutional work. Affective embodiment is surfaced through alignment or misalignment with others’ embodied experiences, and this mediates how actors replenish emotional energy. Alignment with others’ embodied experiences, often connected to online abuse, means emotional energy is replenished through ‘affective solidarity’ (movement towards the collective). Misalignment, surfaced through tensions within the movement, means actors seek replenishment through ‘sensory retreat’ (movement away from the collective). This study contributes to theorization on institutional work and emotional energy by recentring the importance of the body alongside emotions, as well as offering important lessons for online organizing.

Problem Approach Outcomes Next Steps COVID‐19 created new research, clinical, educational, and personal challenges, while simultaneously separating work teams who were under work‐from‐home restrictions. Addressing these challenges required new forms of collaborative groups.To support the department community and the rapid sharing of new research, educational, clinical, and personal efforts, a Core Team from the Department of Learning Health Sciences at the University of Michigan developed a meeting series called the COVID Conversations. This Experience Report shares the organizational structure of the COVID Conversations, proposes a comparison to traditional Learning Communities, and reports the results of a questionnaire that gathered details about department members' COVID‐related activities.We identify and describe salient similarities and differences between the COVID Conversations and the characteristics of Learning Communities. We also developed and piloted a taxonomy for characterizing LHS research projects that may be further developed for use in Learning Community planning, in conjunction with other maturity grids and ontologies. We propose the term “Meta‐Learning Community” to describe the structure and function of the COVID Conversations.In academic medicine, remote work, telemedicine, and virtual learning may be here to stay. The COVID Conversations constitute a distinct and innovative form of collaborative work in which separate teams addressing distinct goals, yet sharing a common passion to tackle the issues brought by the pandemic, are able to share experiences and learn from one other. The challenges of COVID‐19 have made evident the need for multiple forms of organizing teamwork, and our study contributes the notion of a “Meta”‐Learning Community as a new form of collaborative work. Background: Rapid molecular diagnostic tests can aid in deescalating antimicrobial therapy prior to final culture and susceptibility reports. Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine whether a new workflow that incorporated pharmacist review of these results reduced time to change in antimicrobial therapy. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed pre- and post-implementation of pharmacist review of positive blood cultures analyzed by rapid diagnostics with clinical recommendations paged to providers. Patients 18 years of age or older initiated on empiric antibiotics were included. The primary outcome was the time to change to targeted antimicrobials. Other outcomes evaluated were rates of Clostridioides difficile (C difficile) infection, inpatient mortality, and intensive care unit and hospital lengths of stay. Results: A total of 199 patients were included, with 98 and 101 patients in the pre- and post-implementation groups, respectively. The median time to change to targeted antimicrobials was significantly reduced with pharmacist intervention from 18.35 to 8.43 hours ( P = 0.042). The groups had similar rates of C difficile infection (1% vs 0%, P = 0.492) and mortality (7.1% vs 5%, P = 0.564). The post-group also had significant reductions in antibiotic days of therapy (10.5 vs 9 days, P = 0.014) and intensive care unit length of stay (3.04 vs 1.44 days, P = 0.046). Median hospital length of stay was similar between the pre- and post-groups (8.5 vs 8 days, P = 0.106), respectively. Conclusion: Incorporating pharmacist review of rapid molecular results of blood cultures decreased time to change to targeted antimicrobials and reduced inpatient antibiotic days of therapy.

Unpaid care work, including child care, elder care, and housework, is unremunerated work essential to human survival and flourishing. Worldwide, women disproportionally carry out this work, impacting upon their ability to engage in other activities, such as education, employment, or leisure. Despite a growing number of businesses engaging in “gendered CSR,” in the form of women's empowerment projects, attention to unpaid care work remains little discussed in the literature, despite its importance to sustainable development. Applying Diane Elson's feminist economic framework for alleviating unpaid care work inequality to a case study of gendered CSR in Ghana, I find that at present unpaid care work is (a) unrecognised in business’ CSR, (b) may be both reduced or exacerbated by CSR efforts, and (c) remains conceptualised as relevant only to the private sphere, therefore, missing a unique opportunity for business to contribute to gender equality and sustainable development. Connecting unpaid care work and business responsibility contributes to a more expansive understanding of what CSR may be.

Gender is one of the most taken-for-granted institutions. Inequality is a common by-product of this institution and questions arise as to how such inequalities can be addressed. We uncover the cognitive and emotional processes individuals experience that enable them to begin disrupting the gender institution, within our case context of a gender equality programme in the Ghanaian cocoa value chain. We identify four elements of institutional apprehension: theorizing, auditing, relating to others and exploring difference. These processes help individuals ‘see’ the dimensions of the gender institution: its order’s laws and rules, its organizational gender regimes, and its gendered practices in daily interactions. Furthermore, some individuals are able to appreciate the dynamic interplay between these dimensions, and the power relations that are inherent within them. We argue that this fifth element of institutional apprehension, consciousness-raising, is particularly important for achieving equality. Consciousness-raising involves connecting everyday practices with organizational and structural rules, thus making ‘the personal political’. It enables individuals to reconsider the way that power plays out in relational ways within value chains, promoting variously fatalism, resistance and the possibility of more multidimensional solutions to gender inequality.

Increasingly it is argued that feminism has been co‐opted by neoliberal agendas: becoming more individualistic and losing touch with its wider social change objectives. The neoliberalization of feminism is driven in part by increased corporate power, including the growing role of corporations in governance arenas, and corporate social responsibility agendas. However, we turn to social movement theory to elucidate strategies that social movements, including feminist social movements, are adopting in such spaces. In so doing, we find that feminist activists are engaging with new political opportunities, mobilizing structures and strategic framing processes that emerge in the context of increasingly neoliberal and privatized governance systems. We suggest that despite the significant challenges to their agendas, far from being co‐opted by neoliberalism, feminist social movements remain robust, existing alongside and developing new strategies to contest the neoliberalization of feminism in a variety of innovative ways.

Older adults with cancer experience several functional implications from cancer and its treatment. The challenges these individuals experience throughout the cancer trajectory can be addressed by rehabilitation specialists, such as occupational and physical therapies. This paper provides a review of occupational and physical therapy rehabilitative strategies in older adults with cancer from 2014 to 2017. Both occupational and physical therapies are well supported within the literature to address functional deficits for older adults with cancer via numerous rehabilitative approaches by [1, 2•, 3]. Occupational and physical therapies provide a crucial element to comprehensive cancer care. Despite barriers to rehabilitation service provision, we must continue to push forward in making occupational and physical therapy the norm for older adults with cancer.

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been hailed as a new means to address gender inequality, particularly by facilitating women’s empowerment. Women are frequently and forcefully positioned as saviours of economies or communities and proponents of sustainability. Using vignettes drawn from a CSR women’s empowerment programme in Ghana, this conceptual article explores unexpected programme outcomes enacted by women managers and farmers. It is argued that a feminist Foucauldian reading of power as relational and productive can help explain this since those involved are engaged in ongoing processes of resistance and self-making. This raises questions about the assumptions made about women and what is it that such CSR programmes aim to empower them ‘from’ or ‘to.’ Empowerment, when viewed as an ethic of care for the self, is better understood as a self-directed process, rather than a corporate-led strategy. This has implications for how we can imagine the achievement of gender equality through CSR.

Background and purpose Providing opportunities to allow pharmacy students to apply clinical skills is essential to ensure that they are comfortable and competent to perform these skills during advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs) and in practice. We describe unique coupled courses that require students to apply clinical skills during real patient encounters and simulation activities in the ambulatory and acute care setting to ensure that they are ready for APPEs. Educational activity and setting New required courses were developed at West Virginia University School of Pharmacy that focused on teaching and reinforcing patient care skills in the ambulatory and acute care settings. Both courses were designed to provide students with multiple opportunities to offer supervised patient care and to become more comfortable and confident in their patient care skills. Findings The coupled courses were well-received by students. Feedback indicated that students felt more comfortable in these patient care settings and in performing patient care activities as a result of these courses. Summary These coupled courses offered multiple opportunities for students to practice patient care skills and gain valuable experience participating in activities that increased their confidence and competence at being integral members of the healthcare team. The interactions with real patients, simulated patient scenarios, standardized patients, and other members of the healthcare team helped students advance communication skills, clinical skills, and ability to identify and resolve medication-related problems in preparation for APPEs.

Importance: Despite the growing literature on the association of functional, physical, and quality-of-life (QOL) deficits with poor postoperative outcomes, there is a gap in the literature identifying women’s occupational performance needs after ovarian cancer surgery. Objective: To describe the experiences of women hospitalized after ovarian cancer surgery to identify potential areas for intervention. Goals were to (1) identify functional needs and limitations at time of discharge as measured by the typical acute care occupational therapy evaluation and semistructured interview and (2) understand the women’s perspectives of their needs for occupational therapy and a safe return to home. Design: Single-arm, cross-sectional descriptive study. Mixed-methods data collection and analysis. Setting: Academic cancer center. Participants: Women with ovarian cancer (N = 11) who had completed surgery. Intervention: Semistructured interviews and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) completed postsurgery. Outcomes and Measures: PROMs included the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Distress Thermometer and Problem List, the PROMIS® Global Physical Health (GPH) and Global Mental Health (GMH) scales, and the Possibilities for Activity Scale–Women (PActS–W). Results: The mean NCCN Distress score was 6.0 (standard deviation [SD] = 3.1, with the top three concerns being pain (80%), worry (80%), and fatigue (78%). Mean GPH and GMH T scores were 38.0 (SD = 8.8) and 48.2 (SD = 8.4), respectively. Women scored a mean of 39.2 (SD = 11.2, range = 26–58) on the PActS–W. Thematic analyses found that the women were uncertain about potential functional limitations and significantly distressed. Conclusion and Relevance: Women with ovarian cancer experienced high levels of uncertainty and distress after surgery. Integrating in-home or community-based occupational therapy into routine care could decrease functional distress and uncertainty and help women manage concerns related to pain, worry, and fatigue. What This Article Adds: This study suggests that occupational therapy evaluation and intervention are needed to decrease distress and improve QOL of women upon discharge after ovarian cancer surgery.

Objectives The impact of occupational therapy (OT) and physical therapy (PT) on functional outcomes in older adults with cancer is unknown. Design Two-arm single-institution randomized controlled trial of outpatient OT/PT. Setting Comprehensive cancer center with two off-site OT/PT clinics. Participants We recruited adults 65 years and older with a recent diagnosis or recurrence of cancer within 5 years, with at least one functional limitation as identified by a geriatric assessment. Participants were randomized to OT/PT or usual care. Intervention Rehabilitation consisted of individualized OT and PT that addressed functional activities and strength/endurance needs. Measurements Primary outcome was functional status as measured by the Nottingham Extended Activities of Daily Living scale. Secondary outcomes were Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System-Global Mental Health (GMH) and Global Physical Health (GPH), ability to participate in Social Roles (SR), physical function, and activity expectations and self-efficacy (Possibilities for Activity Scale [PActS]). Results Among those recruited (N = 63), only 45 patients (71%) were evaluable due to loss of follow-up and/or nonreceipt of intervention. The median age was 74 years; 53% were female, and 91% were white. Overall, 30% patients had hematologic malignancies, 30% breast cancer, and 16% colorectal cancers. A total of 65% were in active treatment; 49% had stage 3 or 4 disease. At follow-up, both OT/PT (P = .02) and usual care (P = .03) groups experienced a decline in functional status. PActS scores between groups (P = .04) was significantly improved in the intervention group. GMH and SR met criteria for minimally important clinical difference favoring the intervention, but not statistical significance. Several barriers were noted in the implementation of the intervention program: recruitment, concerns about cost, distance, scheduling, and limited treatment provided. Conclusion OT/PT may positively influence activity expectations and self-efficacy. Future research needs to address significant barriers to implementation to increase use of OT/PT services and access to quality care. J Am Geriatr Soc 67:953-960, 2019.

Business and society (B&S) researchers, as well as practitioners, have been critiqued for ignoring those with less voice and power (e.g., women, non-literate, or indigenous peoples) often referred to as “fringe stakeholders.” Existing methods used in B&S research often fail to address issues of meaningful participation, voice and power, especially in developing countries. In this article, we stress the utility of visual participatory research (VPR) methods in B&S research to fill this gap. Through a case study on engaging Ghanaian cocoa farmers on gender inequality issues, we explore how VPR methods may be used by researchers to achieve more inclusive, and thus more credible, stakeholder research that can improve decision making within businesses. Furthermore, we argue that ingrained social and environmental problems tackled by B&S research and the unique context in which they occur may open up new opportunities to develop participatory visual methods for social change.

Background: Specialty palliative care is not accessible for many patients with advanced cancer. There is a need to find alternative palliative care strategies in oncology clinics. Objective: The objective of the study was to assess the feasibility, acceptability, and perceived effectiveness of an oncology nurse-led care management approach to improve primary palliative care. Methods: The study design was a single-arm pilot trial of the Care Management by Oncology Nurses (CONNECT) intervention, in which registered oncology nurses receive specialized training and work closely with oncologists to (1) address symptom needs; (2) engage patients and caregivers in advance care planning; (3) provide emotional support; and (4) coordinate care. The subjects were 23 patients with advanced cancer, 19 caregivers, and 5 oncologists from a community oncology clinic in western Pennsylvania. Feasibility was assessed through enrollment rates, outcome assessment rates, and visit checklists. Patients, caregivers, and oncologists completed three-month assessments of acceptability and perceived effectiveness. Results: The consent-to-approach rate was 86% and enrolled-to-consent rate, 77%. CONNECT was implemented according to protocol for all participants. No participants withdrew after enrollment. Four patients died during the study; three-month outcome assessments were completed with all remaining participants (83%). Patients and caregivers reported high satisfaction with CONNECT and perceived the intervention as helpful in addressing symptoms (85%), coping (91%), and planning for the future (82%). Oncologists unanimously agreed that CONNECT improved the quality of care provided for patients with advanced cancer. Conclusion: An oncology nurse-led care management intervention is feasible, acceptable, and was perceived to be effective for improving provision of primary palliative care. A randomized trial of CONNECT is warranted.

The idea for this book grew out of the work on gender and corporate social responsibility (CSR) undertaken at the International Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility (ICCSR), Nottingham University Business School (UK). Beginning in 2003, this research and teaching agenda expanded quite rapidly, attracting Business School, external and ESRC funding and the attention of international scholars. In June 2013, the ICCSR held the International Symposium on Gender and Responsible Business, the first of its kind in the United Kingdom. One of the most valuable things about this event was that it brought together academics, practitioners and policy-makers in what was perhaps the first wide-ranging discussion of the impacts of business with respect to gender relations and gender equality, in the context of research on corporate responsibility. The chapters in this volume were largely commissioned from presenters at that Symposium, and from the work of others who were in contact with the gender and CSR researchers at the ICCSR. Further networks were built following a rich and diverse stream on Gender and Corporate Responsibility at the Gender, Work and Organization conference in Keele, UK, in 2014, and a Paper Development Workshop at the Academy of Management that same year. Since then, collaborations and conversations on gender and CSR have continued to blossom in international arenas, such as at the Academy of Management, and more locally in our respective universities.

Several chronic health conditions of childhood, including pediatric cancers, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and sickle cell disease (SCD) are associated with significant neurocognitive impairments that can compromise educational attainment and future vocational opportunities. The prominence of attentional deficits as part of the neurocognitive sequelae associated with each of these conditions has led some researchers to draw parallels with another chronic condition that manifests in childhood, specifically the inattentive subtype of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Because ADHD shares similar neurocognitive and symptomatological features with pediatric cancer, TBI, and SCD, stimulant medications may be indicated to treat associated deficits in each condition. However, relatively few studies have investigated the safety and effectiveness of stimulant medications in treating neurocognitive sequelae in children with cancer, TBI, or SCD. Thus, clinicians have received little guidance regarding a potentially useful treatment modality for ameliorating the neurocognitive deficits that can profoundly impact the educational, psychosocial, and vocational development of youth with these chronic health conditions. We provide a review of the literature and synthesize current developments in research regarding treatment with stimulant medication for children with cancer, TBI, and SCD, as well as discuss special considerations for each condition.

Our purpose was to explore a relatively new sexual behavior—heterosexual women kissing one another publicly at college parties. Popular press articles suggest this is a common occurrence among college women, but no known psychological research has been conducted on its prevalence or meaning. In Study 1, we conducted an online survey of students at a private, residential college to ascertain the prevalence of this behavior. Results indicated that a substantial minority of women (33%) had engaged in this behavior, and the majority of participants (69%), both male and female, had observed this behavior. In Study 2, we recruited heterosexual women who reported having kissed another woman at a college party. We collected open-ended responses from 77 women via a questionnaire and 27 of these women also completed a semistructured interview. Thematic analyses revealed characteristics of the social context that encouraged this behavior, including pressure to so engage, high levels of alcohol consumption, heterosexist attitudes, and the belief that college is a time for experimentation. A total of seven different motivations for engaging in this behavior were described by participants, reflecting both extrinsic motivations (e.g., to gain male attention) and intrinsic motivations (e.g., to bond with female friends). Results are discussed in terms of sociocultural influences (women’s sexual objectification and sexualized college parties) and individual factors (women’s sexual fluidity and heterosexual identity development) related to this behavior, highlighting issues of empowerment versus objectification.

10038 Background: Limitations in functional status and reduced health status are common among older adults with cancer, yet occupational and physical therapy (OT/PT) remain underutilized (Pergolotti, et.al. JGO,2015). For this population, we evaluated an outpatient CAncer REhabilitation (CARE) program and compared it to usual care (UC). Methods: We recruited adults 65 years and older who had a diagnosis of cancer or recurrence within 5 years and had at least one functional limitation as measured by a geriatric assessment (GA). Participants were then randomized to OT/PT (CARE) or UC. CARE delivered individualized outpatient intervention; OT addressed functional activities, and PT strength/endurance needs. UC participants received a brochure on supportive care services. Primary outcome was functional status (Nottingham Extended Activities of Daily Living Scale [NEADL] (range 0-22)) and secondary outcomes were global Mental and Physical Health, and ability to participate in Social Roles (SR) and activities (Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System [PROMIS] (range 0-100)), for all measures, higher scores indicate better health. We used t-tests to compare groups. Results: 51 adults were randomized: median age 73 years, 55% male, 92% White, 33% with Leukemia/lymphoma, 26% Breast, 22% Colorectal, 67% in active treatment, and 37% with Stage 3 or 4. After 3 months, both groups experienced a significant decline in functional status ( p = .046; p = .005), but change in functional status (-1.5 UC, -1.1 CARE, p = .637) , physical health status (0.0 UC, 2.4 CARE, p = .121) and participation in SR (.11 in UC, 3.71 CARE, p = .088) between UC and CARE were not significant. However, change in mental health (-1.0 in UC, 3.0 CARE, p= .032) significantly different between groups. Conclusions: CARE was associated with a significant improvement in participant’s mental health status compared to a decline in UC. Results suggest CARE may influence ability to participate in social roles and activities and physical health, but further study is needed with larger sample sizes. We demonstrated that for older adults with cancer, OT/PT are promising interventions to improve mental health. Clinical trial information: NCT02306252.

Atmospheric samples were collected during warm and cold weather conditions at continental, coastal and marine sites. Source sampling was performed at a coal-fired power plant and several volcanic sites. Atmospheric gas-phase and particulate boron concentrations were determined by neutron capture prompt-gamma activation analysis and compared to measurements from other studies. Rain and snow samples collected at one continental site were analysed for soluble and insoluble B. Volcanic deposit and ash samples were also analysed for B. The tropospheric burdens for particulate and gas-phase B were estimated to be 0.6 × 1010 g and (6–11) × 1010 g, respectively, with the latter about a factor of 3 lower than previous estimates. Global anthropogenic particulate and gas-phase B source estimates were consistent with previous estimates, and natural particulate and gas-phase B source estimates agreed reasonably well with previously reported upper limits. About 65–85 % of total B source strength can be attributed to the oceans, and 8–20% to coal, agricultural, fuelwood and refuse burning. Volcanism may contribute 6–15% of the total, but accurate source estimates are difficult. Individuals in organizations may engage in institutional work to disrupt institutions, including the institution of gender. Applying Connell’s theory of gender and power to institutional work allows for a deeper understanding of both the potential for, and challenges of such ‘work’. An in-depth, two-year case study of a fair trade cocoa organization presents a context where gender and power are at extremes, and work across cultural and geographic boundaries. Interviews and observations reveal that whilst individuals were first able to disrupt the gender status- quo, through valorizing and legitimizing work, resistance work then began as initial circumstances altered. Resistance takes the form of distancing, reframing and blocking further institutional change.
