Abstract

Nutrigenomics is the study of how constituents of the diet interact with genes, and their products, to alter phenotype and, conversely, how genes and their products metabolise these constituents into nutrients, antinutrients, and bioactive compounds. Results from molecular and genetic epidemiological studies indicate that dietary unbalance can alter gene-nutrient interactions in ways that increase the risk of developing chronic disease. The interplay of human genetic variation and environmental factors will make identifying causative genes and nutrients a formidable, but not intractable, challenge. We provide specific recommendations for how to best meet this challenge and discuss the need for new methodologies and the use of comprehensive analyses of nutrient-genotype interactions involving large and diverse populations. The objective of the present paper is to stimulate discourse and collaboration among nutrigenomic researchers and stakeholders, a process that will lead to an increase in global health and wellness by reducing health disparities in developed and developing countries

Abstract

Apple extract powders from three different manufacturers were investigated for their anti-inflammatory activity, their total phenolic content, and their chemical composition. The samples represented two production batches for two products and a single batch of a third. The samples showed similar, but clearly different, anti-inflammatory activities, and had substantially different total phenolic contents, and different chemical compositions. Differences in chemical composition for batches of the same product were significant, although not as great as differences between products. The samples were fractionated into chemical classes. The most active fractions were those that contained epicatechin, catechin with phloridzin and quercetin glycosides, or those that contained procyanidin polymers. It was not possible to link activity to the presence of individual components or combinations of these. If fruit extracts are to be reliably linked to validated health benefits, then the source materials, the extraction processes, and the final composition of such products need to be more clearly defined than at present. 38. Trichothecene production and pathogenicity of <e1>Fusarium tumidum</e1>, a candidate bioherbicide for gorse and broom in New Zealand

Abstract

The relationship between trichothecene production and pathogenicity was investigated for 29 isolates of Fusarium tumidum, a potential bioherbicide for gorse (Ulex europaeus) and broom (Cytisus scoparius) in New Zealand. All isolates originally derived from broom produced high levels of T-2 tetraol derivatives when grown on ground maize kernels and pearl barley grains, compared with isolates from gorse. Low amounts of scirpentriol derivatives were also produced by both groups of isolates. No nivalenol and deoxynivalenol derivatives were detected in any of the culture extracts. A subset of isolates cultured on gorse and broom tissue produced only small amounts of T-2 tetraol derivatives relative to the amounts produced in grain cultures. Overall, isolates from broom were more aggressive towards both hosts than isolates from gorse, but the pathogenicity of isolates was not correlated with their capacity to produce large amounts of T-2 tetraol derivatives in culture. Two isolates from gorse were highly aggressive towards both weeds. These isolates offer prospects for the development of a safe bioherbicide that could target two major weeds in New Zealand, as trichothecenes were not detected from them at the higher concentrations.

40. Effect of incubation temperature on zearalenone production by strains of Fusarium crookwellense

Abstract

After 6 weeks incubation on rice 2 strains of Fusarium crookwellense produced more zearalenone (6060–5010 mg/kg dry wt of culture) at ambient temperature (16–29°C) in daylight than at ambient temperature (18–23 °C) in darkness or at controlled temperatures of 11 °C, 20 °C or 25 °C in darkness. Yields at 25 °C were low. Incubation at 11 °C during the second 3 weeks incubation increased yields only when preliminary incubation had been at 25 °C. After 6 weeks incubation at controlled temperatures in darkness, 4 strains produced most zearalenone at 20 °C (2460-21 360 mg/kg), 1 strain at 11 °C (6570 mg/kg). Yields at a temperature oscillating daily from 10–20 °C were less than at 15 °C. One of the 5 strains produced appreciable amounts of a-zearalenol (1645 mg/kg at 20°C) and 2 of nivalenol (340 and 499 mg/kg at 20 °C).
