Abstract: Although the expression "revitalisation" appears more frequently in the field of public policy, particularly in France since the mid-1990s, it remains unexplored by researchers. Often linked to territorial issues, revitalisation is a fuzzy concept, both in the field of public action and in scientific publications. Characterizing this process to discriminate it from other territorial dynamics is, however, a real academic and practical challenge to better support public policies by clarifying the elements of diagnosis, the roles of actors and the modalities of its implementation. Building on experiments carried out in several fields of territorial policies in the region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté (France), our interdisciplinary group of researchers has therefore set out to conceptualise the "territorial revitalisation" with an open perspective that is expected to be further developed through other experiences. This paper thus initiates a collective intelligence approach aiming at the co-construction of an evolving concept, based on studied and/or supported revitalisation experiences, with other researchers and actors taking part in such processes. Based on a synthesis of the knowledge, resulting from a cognitive analysis of the discourse on a specially prepared corpus, we set out the interdisciplinary approach that made it possible to articulate differentiated but complementary theoretical frameworks via a series of keys for reading the territory as a complex system. Our conceptualization of territorial revitalization is based on five principles, introduced by the case study on the deployment of the Techn'hom project in Belfort, from the 2000s to the present day. This example calls for further case studies to refine and make the concept operational.

Abstract: The burial of radioactive waste in deep geological repositories has gradually imposed itself since the 1980s in various countries. Considered more stable, safe, and responsible than storage above ground, this solution is seen as a way of keeping the waste out of human reach, and of freeing oneself of the obligation to monitor repositories. However, it soon became clear that the idea of relying on the relative stability of deep geological repositories for the safe disposal of nuclear waste to remove it from the ‘all too human’ risks associated with history’s turbulences, has produced new uncertainties, and raised new questions, given the multi-millennial time scales involved. This article presents a study of the strategies adopted by the actors in charge of radioactive waste management in the face of the temporal constraints imposed by the length of their radioactive life. More specifically, it is intended to question the representations of temporality that allow the designers of these projects to assume their responsibilities by transmitting information and warnings towards to an extremely distant future, to recipients who are not easily representable and for whom they already have a responsibility even though they do not yet exist.

3. Developing FAIR Ontological Pathways: Linking Evidence of Movement in Lidar to Models of Human Behaviour

Abstract: This paper proposes an ontological approach to connect the archaeological topographic evidence for movement in the landscape which can be derived from interpretation and spatial analysis of airborne lidar data with models of movement derived from modeling exercises such as Agent Based Modelling or Cost Path Modelling. This computational ontology enables the investigation of movement and its topographic manifestations in the landscape at various spatio-temporal scales. It creates an explicit framework for accessing meaningful information about movement generated through research using both detection and modelling-led approaches. Developing explicit computational frameworks to provide meaningful context is critical, particularly as remote sensing and modelling projects increase in scale and complexity. The process of developing a computational ontology exposes a deeper underlying issue, and one applicable to many topics we address as archaeologists: if we begin to unpack the concept of ‘movement’ it is readily apparent that it is a complex phenomenon, like many human habits, and studying it requires drawing together a variety of types of physical evidence and multiple, often competing, theoretical models of human processes and practices. If we wish to make archaeological ‘data’ on movement available, how do we create appropriate contextual information – really useful metadata – so that this data can be incorporated into the variety of studies for which knowledge of movement is relevant? This is essentially the challenge posed broadly by the FAIR principles, and in particular by the principle of interoperability, which suggests that we “use a formal, accessible, shared, and broadly applicable language for knowledge representation”. Rather than simply seeking to fulfill the requirements of an arbitrary standard, attempting to meet the challenge of interoperability provides an impetus and opportunity to attempt to bridge the gap between data and model, and to reconsider how we conceive and represent knowledge in archaeological digital data and modelling projects. This kind of computational ontology, we suggest, can serve as the key for making the data from both these sources actually FAIR.

Abstract: The amount of information available to archaeologists has grown dramatically during the last ten years. The rapid acquisition of observational data and creation of digital data has played a significant role in this “information explosion”. In this paper, we propose new methods for knowledge creation in studies of movement, designed for the present data-rich research context. Using three case studies, we analyze how researchers have identified, conceptualized, and linked the material traces describing various movement processes in a given region. Then, we explain how we construct ontologies that enable us to explicitly relate material elements, identified in the observed landscape, to the knowledge or theory that explains their role and relationships within the movement process. Combining formal pathway systems and informal movement systems through these three case studies, we argue that these systems are not hierarchically integrated, but rather intertwined. We introduce a new heuristic tool, the “track graph”, to record observed material features in a neutral form which can be employed to reconstruct the trajectories of journeys which follow different movement logics. Finally, we illustrate how the breakdown of implicit conceptual references into explicit, logical chains of reasoning, describing basic entities and their relationships, allows the use of these constituent elements to reconstruct, analyze, and compare movement practices from the bottom up.

Abstract: This paper describes long-term changes in human population and vegetation cover in southern France, using summed radiocarbon probability distributions and site count data as population proxies and information from fossil pollen cores as a proxy for past land cover. Southern France is particularly well-suited to this type of study as a result of previous programmes of intensive survey work and excavation in advance of large-scale construction. These make it possible to calibrate the larger scale occupation patterns in the light of the visibility issues created by the burial of archaeological sites beneath alluvial sediments. For purposes of analysis, the region was divided into three biogeographical zones (BGZ), going from the Mediterranean coast to the middle Rhône valley (MRV). All the different population proxies in a given zone show broadly similar patterns of fluctuation, though with varying levels of resolution. The long-term patterns in the different zones all show significant differences from the overall regional pattern, but this is especially the case for the non-Mediterranean middle Rhône area. Cluster analysis of pollen samples has been carried out to identify the main regional land cover types through the Holocene, which are increasingly dominated by open types over time. A variety of other pollen indicators show evidence of increasing human impact through time. Measures of human impact correlate strongly with the population proxies. A series of thresholds are identified in the population–human impact trajectory that are related to other changes in the cultural sequence. The lack of independent climate data for the region means that its impact cannot currently be assessed with confidence. However, for the later periods, it is clear that the incorporation of southern France into larger regional systems played a major role in accounting for changes in land cover and settlement.

Abstract: International audience; In archaeology, movement is often studied on the basis of evidence for specific roads, which implicitly structures our understanding of the settlement system. Conversely, spatial analysis of regional settlement systems, based on locations, also tends to structure our understanding of movement. However, when it comes to studying the development or transformation of a landscape, this dichotomy makes our reasoning circular. Does a crossroads emerge from the habitat or is the habitat located at the crossroads because it is an opportunity for development? By favouring an approach to mobility that is based on the analysis of movement practices of human or non-human agents, two international projects, MoveScape and Redes andinas, work on a methodological approach in which various conceptions of space experienced by societies can be associated to movement, and that incorporates material traces that are traditionally not integrated into the study of movement.; La arqueología de los antiguos sistemas de movilidad se basa generalmente en el estudio de vías específicas, las cuales son relacionadas implícitamente al patrón de asentamiento regional. Recíprocamente, la aproximación a partir de los patrones de asentamiento tiende a condicionar a priori nuestra visión de los flujos de movilidad. Esta dicotomía tiende a producir razonamientos circulares que no contribuyen al estudio de la morfogénesis de los territorios. Este problema puede resumirse en una simple pregunta: los cruces de caminos se desarrollan en función de los sistemas de asentamiento, o bien condicionan la estructuración de estos sistemas? À partir de protocolos de análisis de vestigios arqueológicos de prácticas de movilidad de agentes (humanos y no-humanos) en distintas regiones, los proyectos MoveScape y Redes andinas están desarrollando una metodología para modelizar los procesos de estructuración entre sistemas de movilidad y asentamiento, en el tiempo largo.; En archéologie, la mobilité est souvent étudiée à partir de voies spécifiques structurant implicitement notre compréhension du système de peuplement. À l’inverse, l’approche spatiale des systèmes de peuplement régionaux, fondée sur les lieux, tend à structurer notre vision des flux de circulation. Or, lorsqu’il s’agit de comprendre comment un paysage s’est développé ou transformé, cette dichotomie rend notre raisonnement circulaire. Le carrefour se développe-t-il à partir de la distribution de l’habitat ou l’habitat choisit-il le carrefour comme opportunité de développement ? En privilégiant une approche de la mobilité basée sur l’analyse des pratiques de déplacement des agents humains ou non humains, deux projets internationaux, MoveScape et Redes andinas, travaillent sur une approche méthodologique visant à associer au mouvement différentes conceptions de l’espace vécu par les sociétés et mobilisant des traces matérielles, classiquement non intégrées dans l’étude des flux de circulation.

Abstract: Biological invasions are responsible for tremendous impacts globally, including huge economic losses and management expenditures. Efficiently mitigating this major driver of global change requires the improvement of public awareness and policy regarding its substantial impacts on our socio-ecosystems. One option to contribute to this overall objective is to inform people on the economic costs linked to these impacts; however, until now, a reliable synthesis of invasion costs has never been produced at a global scale. Here, we introduce InvaCost as the most up-to-date, comprehensive, harmonised and robust compilation and description of economic cost estimates associated with biological invasions worldwide. We have developed a systematic, standardised methodology to collect information from peer-reviewed articles and grey literature, while ensuring data validity and method repeatability for further transparent inputs. Our manuscript presents the methodology and tools used to build and populate this living and publicly available database. Abstract: The amount of information available to archaeologists has grown dramatically during the last ten years. The rapid acquisition of observational data and creation of digital data has played a significant role in this &ldquo, information explosion&rdquo, In this paper, we propose new methods for knowledge creation in studies of movement, designed for the present data-rich research context. Using three case studies, we analyze how researchers have identified, conceptualized, and linked the material traces describing various movement processes in a given region. Then, we explain how we construct ontologies that enable us to explicitly relate material elements, identified in the observed landscape, to the knowledge or theory that explains their role and relationships within the movement process. Combining formal pathway systems and informal movement systems through these three case studies, we argue that these systems are not hierarchically integrated, but rather intertwined. We introduce a new heuristic tool, the &ldquo, track graph&rdquo, to record observed material features in a neutral form which can be employed to reconstruct the trajectories of journeys which follow different movement logics. Finally, we illustrate how the breakdown of implicit conceptual references into explicit, logical chains of reasoning, describing basic entities and their relationships, allows the use of these constituent elements to reconstruct, analyze, and compare movement practices from the bottom up.

Abstract: The Franche-Comte region played an important role in the iron industry since at least the Hallstatt Period, but particularly since the industrial revolution (from the end of the 18th century). The presence of thousands of charcoal kilns in the main forest of Besancon (regional capital) is the subject of this study. The aim was to further our understanding of these archaeological objects, and to characterize the impact of charcoal production on the past vegetation. A geophysical survey (magnetic susceptibility) was conducted on two platforms. Charcoal analyses of 11 charcoal kilns and a regressive approach on the current vegetation were undertaken for comparative purposes. The platforms are modern and seem to have been used several times during a short 250-year period. Based on historical sources and compared with forests used for the iron industry, the vegetation of the forest of Chailluz appears to have been harvested for a variety of purposes, notably the iron industry and domestic use. Tree species used to produce charcoal were correlated with the environmental offering and site conditions but charcoal production seemed to open the forest structure. More light demanding taxa and fewer shade-tolerant species than nowadays have been observed.

Abstract: National audience; Depuis les années 1970, les archéologues utilisent la télédétection aérienne ou par satellite pour repérer des sites archéologiques mais aussi des structures paysagères anciennes encore visibles à la surface de la terre. La télédétection appliquée à l’archéologie n’a donc rien de révolutionnaire, néanmoins les évolutions technologiques depuis les années 2000 ont profondément modifié le rapport des archéologues à ce domaine d’étude. Couplée au développement des systèmes d’information géographique (SIG) et aux techniques de géolocalisation de plus en plus performantes, la télédétection n’est plus une pratique uniquement réservée à quelques spécialistes mais s’est largement diffusée. Au-delà des aspects proprement technologiques, cela a engendré une véritable révolution conceptuelle car les SIG et la télédétection modifient le point de vue des archéologues sur les territoires et paysages du passé.

Abstract: In this paper, we describe an exploratory analysis of the possibilities of combining least cost path analysis and network analysis techniques. Accessibility is a potentially important site location factor. So far, the definition of accessibility has been approached through the creation of accumulated cost surfaces and least cost paths. However, these methods do not provide direct information on the foci of movement. Starting from networks created from least cost paths, network analysis and space syntax were used to obtain additional information on the structural features of the network. It is concluded that both techniques can be used with least cost path-based networks, and will provide new insights into the characteristics of the network. For most applications however the Space syntax measures that take the geographical dimension into account seem to be preferable to the simple network analysis measures used here.

Abstract: This paper gives the description of an ongoing research program covering the spatialization of the epigraphic documents and the information they present. The text not only reminds of the beginnings of the spatial epigraphy but it also explains the issues of this research and presents the work carried out for over more than three years by historians, epigraphers and archaeologists involved in the programme, whether they specialize in spatial issues or not. It presents an epigraphic database adjusted within the programme and which has been developed to ensure statistical and spatial treatment of the various epigraphic data (anthroponymy, civic status, social relationships, religious practices, trades etc.) provided by the epigraphic monument. The aim is to increase our knowledge of the territorial dynamics during Antiquity., Cet article présente un programme de recherche en cours, portant sur la spatialisation des documents épigraphiques et des informations dont ils sont porteurs. Outre le rappel des prémices de l’ «épigraphie spatiale » , ce texte explicite les enjeux de cette recherche et évoque le travail conduit depuis plus de trois ans par les chercheurs engagés dans ce programme, qu’ils soient historiens, épigraphistes ou archéologues, qu’ils soient spécialistes ou non des problématiques spatiales. Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we present a method to calculate a “land use heritage map” based on the concept of “memory of landscape”. Such a map can be seen as one variable among others influencing site location preference, and can be used as input for predictive models. The computed values equate to an index of long-term land use intensity. We will first discuss the method used for creating the land use heritage map, for which kernel density estimates are used.We will then present the use of these land use heritage maps for site location analysis in two study areas in SE France. Earlier analyses showed that the influence of the natural environment on settlement location choice in the Roman period is limited. In contrast, land use heritage seems to have a stronger influence on the placement of new settlements. We will discuss the implications for predictive modelling of settlement patterns.

Abstract: International audience; Depuis les années 1970, l'archéologie a connu un élargissement constant de ses champs d'investigation, déplaçant notamment son intérêt du site au territoire. Alors que les praticiens anglo-saxons développaient un intérêt pour les vestiges récoltés " hors site " en prospection, généralement interprétés comme vestiges de l'épandage de fumier, le contexte scientifique français n'a que peu mobilisé ces éléments dans les études d'occupation du sol. L'objectif de cet article est donc de replacer la pratique de la fumure dans le cadre plus large des opérations d'amendement agraire et de leurs corrélats matériels. Le recours aux sources littéraires, aux données de fouilles et aux données iconographiques permet de s'assurer que la pratique de l'épandage de fumier, auquel ont été incorporés des déchets domestiques, conduit à la récolte de tessons de poterie hors site. L'identification de ces épandages agraires permet notamment d'aborder les questions liées à la variation de la pression agraire sur le milieu.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper we present the results of a study into integrating socio-cultural factors into predictive modelling. So far, predictive modelling has largely neglected the social and cultural dimensions of past landscapes. To maintain its value for archaeological research, therefore, it needs new methodologies, concepts and theories. For this study, we have departed from the methodology developed in the 1990s during the Archaeomedes Project. In this project, cross-regional comparisons of settlement location factors were made by analyzing the environmental context of Roman settlements in the French Rhône Valley. For the current research, we expanded the set of variables with 'socio-cultural' factors, in particular accessibility, visibility, and the effect of previous occupation, and created predictive models from this. In this way, have developed a protocol for predictive modelling using both environmental and socio-cultural factors that can easily be implemented for different regions and time periods.

Abstract: International audience; The integration of Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) survey into archaeological research and cultural heritage management has substantially added to our knowledge of archaeological remains in forested areas, and is changing our understanding of how these landscapes functioned in the past. Further, the results of ALS-based surveys of woodlands can now potentially be incorporated into micro-regional and landscape scale studies which rely on survey data, making an important contribution to our understanding of settlement patterns and land use - but doing so requires us to recognize and manage a host of biases inherent in ALS-based survey data. While many types of archaeological remains manifest as micro-topography, several important classes of features commonly appear as standing remains. The identification of these remains is important for archaeological prospection surveys based on ALS data. Standing structures in mixed scenes with vegetation are not well addressed by standard classification approaches. In this paper we propose an approach to the identification of these structures in the point cloud based on multi-scale measures of roughness, and measures of local density and normal orientation. We demonstrate this approach using discrete-return ALS data collected in the Franche-Comté region of France.

The identification of these remains is important for archaeological prospection surveys based on ALS data, and typically represent structures from the Roman, Medieval and early Modern periods. Standing structures in mixed scenes with vegetation are not well addressed by standard classification approaches developed to identify bare earth (terrain), individual trees or plot characteristics, or buildings (roofed structures). In this paper we propose an approach to the identification of these structures in the point cloud based on multi-scale measures of local density, roughness, and normal orientation. We demonstrate this approach using discrete-return ALS data collected in the Franche-Comte region of France at a nominal point density of 8 pts/m2, a resolution which, in coming years, will become increasingly available to archaeologists through government supported mapping schemes.

Abstract: International audience; The Decembers 2012 issue of L'Espace géographique dedicated a section to new perceptions of spatial organizations dynamics what has been developed between different disciplines. Since the 1990s, research programs have brought together geographers, historians, archaeologists, computer specialists and environmentalists. In the introduction "Spatial Dynamics between Archaeology and Geography", Sandrine Robert specifies the different subjects that have been investigated: settlement systems, road systems, morphology of plots and agrarian structures, "urban fabric" and the study of social anthroposystems. In these exchanges, transfers of concepts have been carried out and new concepts have emerged. This has permitted to interrogate the dynamics of change, the resilience of spatial morphologies and the role of society in change and resilience. In "Integration of geographical and archaeological concepts for the study of settlement systems", François Favory, Laure Nuninger and Lena Sanders develop a reflection about the exchanges between archaeologists and geographers. They have enabled the integration of the Longue durée in the study of settlement systems. In "A Reappraisal of the dynamic linking society and form: the contributions of Archaeology and Geography", Sandrine Robert shows how concepts of resilience and self-organization have made possible to understand the construction of morphologies and society through long time. In "Germain, Victor, Martin and the others: urban morphology and socio-ecclesiastic practices in Paris in the 9th-12th centuries and in the 19th century", Hélène Noizet illustrates the concept of "Urban fabric"crossing the analysis of ecclesial typology of four Parisian churches between the 9th and 12th centuries and the analysis of morphology (plots, streets) of the neighborhood where they were founded. This provides an idea of the way in which a way of life by a community can indirectly structure the urban fabric. Abstract: International audience; This paper presents visualisation techniques of high-resolution digital elevation models (DEMs) for visual detection of archaeological features. The methods commonly used in archaeology are reviewed and improvements are suggested. One straightforward technique that has so far not been used in archaeologye the shift method e is presented. The main purpose of this article is to compare and evaluate different visualisation methods. Two conclusions have been reached. Where a single method must be chosen e for printing or producing digital images for non-professionals e the use of sky view factor or slope gradient is endorsed, both presented in greyscale. Otherwise interpreters should choose different techniques on different terrain types: shift on flat terrain, sky viewfactor on mixed terrain, slope gradient on sloped terrain and sky view factor (preferably as a composite image with slope gradient) on rugged terrain.

Abstract: As part of the ArchaeDyn project, a workgroup was formed to coordinate the development, implementation and application of methods and tools for spatial analysis. The workgroup's activities were directed at various problems. The first was to construct a grid common to all the workgroups and to homogenize the study areas used by the different workgroups in their databases. The 'confidence maps' method was suggested for assessing the quality and quantity of information inventoried in the databases. Confidence maps are produced from representation and reliability maps by simple map algebra and they can be considered as 'masks' for interpreting spatial analysis results. Finally, the research team tested, developed and adapted various statistical and geostatistical methods for defining the spatial indicators of stability over time (sustainability / permanent rhythms, changes, mobility / trajectories). This Chapter presents several exploratory analyses made within this framework.

Abstract: avec la collaboration de M. Gabillot et B. Quilliec; The Workgroup 3 of the ArchaeDyn programme, gathering 18 researchers, investigates the spatial dynamics of trade and of consumption of products during the different stages of their life cycles. Its main focus is on the spatial analysis of interconnections between quarries, workshops, areas where items were consumed or hoarded, and the ways in which they circulated or were transferred. As the principle of ArchaeDyn was to work with already built up datasets brought into the program by the participating researchers, the team was confronted by the very high heterogeneousness of these already existing databases. This article therefore presents several investigations to reduce the problems linked to the considerable differences in time and space scales, in methods of collecting and recording information and in reliability of the data distributions. In a second step, we have decided to orient our researches to the identification and the study of the places at the end of the trajectories taken by objects: consumption areas. The proposed methods are then presented through a case study about modelling the main potential areas of metal consumption during the Bronze Age in Northern France.

Abstract: Ancient settlement system’s modelling mainly uses archaeological data. We suggest here to confront settlement networks based on gravity model and social networks (precisely aristocratic families ie gentes) identified with epigraphic data which are spatially located. Taking the social networks into account makes it possible to understand complex territorial layouts, which settlement networks alone can’t completely explain., La modélisation des systèmes de peuplement antique mobilise principalement les données archéologiques relatives à l’habitat. Nous proposons ici de confronter les réseaux d’habitats construits à l’aide d’un modèle gravitaire et les réseaux sociaux, constitués par les familles aristocratiques (gentes), identifiés à l’aide des données épigraphiques dont la dimension spatiale est exploitée.
