Abstract The purpose of this study is to understand the role of professional isolation and work–family balance (WFB) as talent retention strategies, considering organizational commitment (OC) and the mediating role of job satisfaction (JS) among IT employees in the technological industry have been forced by their companies to telework. While previous research has examined the connections between professional isolation (PI), OC, WFB, and JS separately in the context of teleworking, this research proposes an integrative model examining the connections between all these work-related constructs and allowing for mediating and moderating effects. It focuses on IT employees in the technological industry forced to telework, a setting underexamined by previous literature. The final sample is composed of 294 teleworkers forced to work partly at home by their companies. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was applied, and SmartPLS 4.0.8.7 software was used to analyze the data and test the hypotheses. Our results indicate a positive and significant direct effect of WFB on JS and OC, a negative and significant effect of PI on JS and OC, and a positive and significant effect of JS on OC. Our results also indicate that JS mediates the relationship between WFB and OC and between PI and OC and that neither time spent teleworking nor gender moderates the association between PI and OC. Overall, our results suggest that while PI negatively affects OC, JS, and WFB are the most relevant determinants of OC in the context of teleworking. In addition, a complementary IPMA analysis reinforces this view by suggesting that WFB and JS are the most important factors in determining OC performance among IT employees working from home, while PI is not important. The originality of this article is the proposal of an integrative model examining the connections between JS, WFB, PI, and OC and allowing for mediating (JS) and moderating (gender and percentage of time teleworking) effects from a talent management perspective. Moreover, this study focuses on information technology companies and the situation of forced remote working, two settings that have been underexamined. The results could help companies with forced teleworking develop effective strategies to attract, develop, and retain top talent in the information technology industry in the post-pandemic era. It is important for practitioners to consider the interactions between diverse work-related dimensions and the mediating and moderating effects between them to efficiently implement talent management strategies and reinforce OC and, in turn, economic performance.

Current medical physics graduate training in the United States seldom explicitly includes education on foundational skills necessary to produce Patient-Centered Care (PCC)-focused healthcare providers. Such abilities include effective communication, critical reflection, and ethical decision-making. In this article, we present examples of curricula used to purposefully introduce these skills into graduate training to fill this gap. Presented didactic activities include an introduction to patient communication, ethics in medical physics, and a primer in health disparities for medical physicists. Although development of new curricula is resource-intensive when left to individual programs, we here propose resource-sharing and interprofessional collaboration to overcome these barriers.

Mesenchymal stem cells are multipotent cells with a wide range of therapeutic applications, including, among others, tissue regeneration. This work aims to test the safety (EUC-MSC) of intra-articular administration of equine umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells in young healthy dogs under field conditions following single and repeated administration. This was compared with the safety profile of allogenic canine adipose derived mesenchymal stem cells (CAD-MSC) and placebo in order to define the safety of xenogeneic use of mesenchymal stem cells when administered intra-articular. Twenty-four police working dogs were randomized in three groups in a proportion 1:1:1. EUC-MSCs and CAD-MSCs were obtained from healthy donors and were manufactured following company SOPs and under GMP and GMP-like conditions, respectively, and compliant all necessary controls to ensure the quality of the treatment. The safety of the treatment was evaluated locally, systemically and immunologically. For this purpose, an orthopedic examination and Glasgow test for the assessment of pain in the infiltrated joint, blood tests, clinical examination and analysis of the humoral and cellular response to treatment were performed. No adverse events were detected following single and repeated MSC administration despite both equine and canine MSC generate antibody titres in the dogs. The intra-articular administration of equine umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells in dogs has demonstrated to be safe.

Purpose: The childhood-to-adolescence transition is a notable period of change including pubertal development, neurodevelopment, and psychopathology onset, that occurs in divergent patterns between sexes. This study examined the effects of sex and puberty on cortical thickness (CT) in children and explored whether CT changes over time related to emergence of psychopathology in early adolescence. Methods: We used longitudinal data (baseline ages 9–10 and Year 2 [Y2] ages 11–12) from the ABCD Study (n = 9985). Linear and penalized function-on-function regressions modeled the impact of puberty, as it interacts with sex, on CT. Focusing on regions that showed sex differences, linear and logistic regressions modeled associations between change in CT and internalizing problems and suicide ideation. Results: We identified significant sex differences in the inverse relation between puberty and CT in fifteen primarily posterior brain regions. Nonlinear pubertal effects across age were identified in the fusiform, isthmus cingulate, paracentral, and precuneus. All effects were stronger for females relative to males during this developmental window. We did not identify associations between CT change and early adolescent clinical outcomes. Conclusion: During this age range, puberty is most strongly associated with regional changes in CT in females, which may have implications for the later emergence of psychopathology.

Background: The single-port (SPL) and multi-port (MPL) laparoscopic approach are the gold standard of management of acute appendicitis, due to its multiple advantages over open surgery, mainly because of its direct effects on recovery, esthetics and costs of the procedure. However, in third-world countries, the laparoscopic approach is not yet fully reproducible due to the costs of the technique. The surgical-glove port single incision laparoscopic appendectomy (SGP-SILA) has been proposed as a viable option. However, it has never been studied in Colombia. Objective: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness and reliability of SGP-SILA in the management of complicated acute appendicitis, compared to traditional MPL approach. Materials and methods: A retrospective case control study was carried out comparing patients undergoing laparoscopic appendectomy by SGP-SILA vs. MPL, evaluating operating costs associated with intraoperative and postoperative variables in two tertiary centers in Bogota, Colombia. The data were analyzed and expressed according to their nature and distribution. Results: 116 patients were included (SGP-SILA: 62 and MPL: 54). The median surgical time for SGP-SILA was 60 min vs. 39 min for MPL. SGP-SILA was shown to cause lower frequency of surgical site infection (4 vs. 8 patients; p = 0.047). Abstract Introduction Penetrating chest trauma (PCT) represents 10% of worldwide mortality, with developing countries counting as some of the most affected by high mortality rates due to cardiac trauma. Colombia is considered one of the most violent countries due to the high mortality rate associated with war and crime, hence the validation of an own classification for penetrating cardiac injuries (PCI) is mandatory. Methods Retrospective cross‐sectional study which included adult patients with PCIs at a level 4 trauma center in Colombia, between January 2018 and April 2020. We used our own system (Bogotá Classification) and compared it with traditional systems (e.g., Ivatury's, OIS‐AAST), by analyzing the mechanism of injury (MOI), the hemodynamic status of the patient at admission, the inpatient management, the individual outcomes, and some demographic variables. The COVID-19 crisis has had a major impact on youth. This study examined factors associated with youth's attitudes towards their government's response to the pandemic and their blaming of individuals from certain risk groups, ethnic backgrounds, and countries or regions. In a sample of 5,682 young adults (Mage = 22) from 14 countries, lower perceived burden due to COVID-19, more collectivistic and less individualistic values, and more empathy were associated with more positive attitudes towards the government and less blaming of individuals of certain groups. Youth's social identification with others in the pandemic mediated these associations in the same direction, apart from the COVID-19 burden on attitudes, which had a positive indirect effect. No evidence of country-level moderation was found.

Objective: To estimate the functional relationships between burnout and job satisfaction in health professionals of two hospitals in Peru.Materials and methods: A quantitative, observational, correlational and cross-sectional research was carried out. Out of a study population of 620 health professionals, 177 (physicians, odontologists, pharmacists, psychologists, nurses, obstetricians, medical technologists, nutritionists and social workers) were interviewed. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) and the Job Satisfaction Scale (SL-SPC) were used as measuring instruments, showing adequate psychometric properties.Results: The high-burnout prevalence rate (TP) was 33.3 %. Using a structural equation analysis, a significant (AGFI = 0.946) and negative (structural coefficient = -0.62) relationship was found between burnout and job satisfaction in health professionals. The predominant dimension of burnout was depersonalization (37 % = 0.72 / (0.56 + 0.72 + 0.65)) and the predominant factor of job satisfaction was profits (35 % = 0.99 / (0.67 + 0.99 + 0.48 + 0.66)). Conclusions: There is a significant and negative functional relationship between burnout syndrome and job satisfaction. Burnout is a predictor of job satisfaction. No significant differences were found when comparing the high-burnout prevalence rate regarding the sociodemographic and work-related variables

Introducción. El aneurisma aórtico abdominal roto, tiene una mortalidad del 80 % al 90 %. Para su reparación existe una técnica abierta y otra endovascular, las cuales tienen diferencias entre sus beneficios y complicaciones. El método de elección en la actualidad para la corrección de esta alteración anatómica es endovascular, sin embargo, no es el más usado, porque no se cuenta todo el tiempo con el equipo humano de cirugía vascular para su realización. Caso clínico. Ingresa a urgencias un paciente en estado de shock de origen desconocido, con dolor abdominal de 24 horas de evolución. Se realiza una tomografía con contraste que demuestra un aneurisma aórtico abdominal infrarrenal roto. Debido a que no se contaba con el equipo de cirugía vascular, es llevado de urgencia a una corrección abierta que duró 153 minutos, con un sangrado intraoperatorio de 1754 cc. Fue dado de alta a los 12 días postoperatorios sin ninguna complicación. Discusión. La reparación endovascular del aneurisma aórtico abdominal roto es la mejor elección, ya que muestra mayores beneficios en comparación con la reparación abierta, sin embargo, no es el más utilizado, porque se necesita de un personal bien entrenado en cirugía endovascular, por lo que, dentro de la formación de los cirujanos generales, se tiene que incluir el aprendizaje de las técnicas abiertas.

Antecedentes: La videocápsula endoscópica (VCE), método mínimamente invasivo de estudio del sistema gastrointestinal indicado en hemorragia digestiva oculta, tiene como principal complicación la retención de la cápsula endoscópica (RCE). Actualmente se maneja con extracción directa empleando enteroscopia de doble balón; sin embargo, cuando falla por su localización o por patologías asociadas, la intervención quirúrgica resulta el método de mayor éxito. Objetivo: Evaluar las características clínicas y el manejo de pacientes con RCE. Método: De enero de 2001 a diciembre de 2018 se realizó un búsqueda retrospectiva, en tres centros, de pacientes con diagnóstico de RCE. Se evaluaron variables clínicas y de manejo, y además se realizó una revisión crítica de la literatura. Resultados: Se hallaron 15 pacientes con diagnóstico de RCE (ocho mujeres y siete hombres), con una edad promedio de 65 años (rango: 45-77). Siete requirieron manejo quirúrgico, tres manejo endoscópico y cinco manejo médico. Conclusiones: La RCE es una patología nueva de baja prevalencia. El manejo quirúrgico resulta ser una segunda línea terapéutica cuando la extracción de la VCE no ha sido posible endoscópicamente. Para su diagnóstico y manejo, esta patología requiere una especial atención a la historia clínica, los antecedentes y los síntomas de los pacientes.

Antecedentes: Las hernias paraesofágicas gigantes tienen indicación quirúrgica en caso de ser sintomáticas. Hace 20 años se incorporó la reparación asistida por robot debido a las ventajas que ofrece sobre las limitantes de la laparoscopia. Objetivo: Reportar la experiencia en reparación de hernias paraesofágicas gigantes asistida por robot en un hospital de cuarto nivel en Bogotá, Colombia, Fundación Clínica Shaio. Método: Estudio retrospectivo, descriptivo, de cinco casos de hernia paraesofágica gigante tipo III o IV, llevados a corrección robótica, de agosto de 2016 a junio de 2018, con evaluación de los desenlaces posoperatorios. Resultados: Cinco pacientes fueron sometidos a reparación asistida por robot, el tiempo quirúrgico fue de 146 minutos, se realizó una sola conversión a cirugía abierta, la media de sangrado fue de 100 ml, el tiempo de estancia hospitalaria de 2.2 días, y los porcentajes de morbilidad, mortalidad y recurrencia a 1 año fueron del 0%. Conclusión: La reparación de este tipo de hernias asistida por robot ha mostrado ventajas sobre el abordaje laparoscópico, como realizar disecciones en ángulos de difícil acceso, precisión aumentada, ergonomía y vista tridimensional y más cercana del espacio de trabajo. Además, promueve mejores desenlaces quirúrgicos y posoperatorios, ventajas evidenciadas principalmente en la reparación de hernias paraesofágicas gigantes.

En este artículo, siguiendo la metáfora de ir haciendo juntas un tejido de experiencias, elaboramos una autoetnografía dialógica. Entrelazamos nuestras historias mediante un ejercicio que consistió en escribir de manera individual y discutir los textos en reuniones semanales. Este ejercicio nos ha permitido articular tres historias como académicas de tiempo completo dedicadas principalmente a la investigación. Tomamos la decisión de hacer este proceso de indagación compartida porque sentimos la urgente necesidad de reflexionar sobre esa carrera profesional, que iniciamos por vocación hace ya varias décadas, pero que, conforme nos acercamos a su posible conclusión por jubilación, ha dejado de tener el mismo sentido. Esto, consideramos, responde en gran medida a la relevancia que han tomado los criterios administrativos en detrimento de los académicos en un nuevo contexto, que algunos han caracterizado como la universidad neoliberal. Las tres autoras —dos de las cuales han trabajado más la metodología cualitativa, en este caso particular la autoetnografía, y una de ellas que durante años ha investigado las trayectorias laborales de las mujeres dentro de las universidades públicas— hemos hecho un ejercicio de introspección compartido con la intención de detectar cuestiones nodales y de explorar alternativas viables dentro del contexto actual.

Purpose: The goal is to develop a stand-alone application, which automatically and consistently computes the coordinates of the dose calculation point recommended by the American Brachytherapy Society (i.e., point A) based solely on the implanted applicator geometry for cervical cancer brachytherapy. Material and methods: The application calculates point A coordinates from the source dwell geometries in the computed tomography (CT) scans, and outputs the 3D coordinates in the left and right directions. The algorithm was tested on 34 CT scans of 7 patients treated with high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy using tandem and ovoid applicators. A single experienced user retrospectively and manually inserted point A into each CT scan, whose coordinates were used as the “gold standard” for all comparisons. The gold standard was subtracted from the automatically calculated points, a second manual placement by the same experienced user, and the clinically used point coordinates inserted by multiple planners. Coordinate differences and corresponding variances were compared using nonparametric tests. Results: Automatically calculated, manually placed, and clinically used points agree with the gold standard to < 1 mm, 1 mm, 2 mm, respectively. When compared to the gold standard, the average and standard deviation of the 3D coordinate differences were 0.35 ± 0.14 mm from automatically calculated points, 0.38 ± 0.21 mm from the second manual placement, and 0.71 ± 0.44 mm from the clinically used point coordinates. Both the mean and standard deviations of the 3D coordinate differences were statistically significantly different from the gold standard, when point A was placed by multiple users (p < 0.05) but not when placed repeatedly by a single user or when calculated automatically. There were no statistical differences in doses, which agree to within 1-2% on average for all three groups. Conclusions: The study demonstrates that the automated algorithm calculates point A coordinates consistently, while reducing inter-user variability. Point placement using the algorithm expedites the planning process and minimizes associated potential human errors.

Gardnerella vaginalis is one of the main etiologic agents of bacterial vaginosis (BV). This infection is responsible for a wide range of public health costs and is associated with several adverse outcomes during pregnancy. Improving our understanding of G. vaginalis protein cell surface will assist in BV diagnosis. This study represents the first proteomic approach that has analyzed the exposed proteins on G. vaginalis cell surface using a shaving approach. The 261 G. vaginalis proteins identified using this approach were analyzed with bioinformatic tools to detect characteristic motifs from surface-exposed proteins, such as signal peptides (36 proteins), lipobox domains (17 proteins), LPXTG motifs (5 proteins) and transmembrane alpha-helices (66 proteins). One third of the identified proteins were found to have at least one typical motif of surface-exposed proteins. Furthermore, the subcellular location was examined using two predictors (PSORT and Gpos-mPLoc). These bioinformatic tools classified 17% of the identified proteins as surface-associated proteins. Interestingly, we identified 13 members of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) superfamily, which were mainly involved in the translocation of various substrates across membranes. To validate the location of the G. vaginalis surface-exposed proteins, an immunofluorescence assay with antibodies against Escherichia coli GroEL was performed to reveal the extracellular location of the moonlighting GroEL. In addition, monoclonal antibodies (mAb) against G. vaginalis Cna protein were produced and used to validate the location of Cna on the surface of the G. vaginalis. These high affinity anti-Cna mAb represent a useful tool for the study of this pathogenic microorganism and the BV.

Parents returning to work after the arrival of a new son or daughter is an important question for understanding the trajectory of people's lives and professional careers amid current debates about gender equality and work-life balance (WLB). Interestingly, current research concludes that general WLB practices at the workplace may be necessary in the specific case of women returning to work after childbirth because of the particular maternal and infant factors involved. However, WLB practices as a flexible arrangement may work against women because they may be viewed as a lack of organizational commitment. Therefore, research on this topic could benefit from considering supervisor support as a complement of such practices, but previous research has analyzed WLB and supervisor support separately and scarcely. To fill this gap in the literature, we use two sub-samples of 664 female employees and 749 male employees with children under the age of one from 27 European countries participating in the 6th European Working Conditions Survey (EWCS-2015) to study the impact of perceived WLB on European women's perceived well-being after childbirth, in contrast with previous literature. We also analyze the impact of perceived supervisor support (SS) and its interaction with perceived WLB on women's well-being after childbirth, and explore differences with men after childbirth, a collective underexplored by the literature. We find significant gender differences on the relative impact of WLB, SS, and their interaction on perceived job well-being. Our results have important implications for human resource practices in organizations. In particular, they suggest that gendered WLB practices should be encouraged, and stress the relevance of the human factor over human resource practices in addressing the difficulties that women returning to work face after childbirth.

S100A4, a member of the S100 calcium-binding protein family secreted by tumor and stromal cells, supports tumorigenesis by stimulating angiogenesis. We demonstrated that S100A4 synergizes with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), via the RAGE receptor, in promoting endothelial cell migration by increasing KDR expression and MMP-9 activity. In vivo overexpression of S100A4 led to a significant increase in tumor growth and vascularization in a human melanoma xenograft M21 model. Conversely, when silencing S100A4 by shRNA technology, a dramatic decrease in tumor development of the pancreatic MiaPACA-2 cell line was observed. Based on these results we developed 5C3, a neutralizing monoclonal antibody against S100A4. This antibody abolished endothelial cell migration, tumor growth and angiogenesis in immunodeficient mouse xenograft models of MiaPACA-2 and M21-S100A4 cells. It is concluded that extracellular S100A4 inhibition is an attractive approach for the treatment of human cancer.

The present study addresses women's underrepresentation in the academic profession, as well as the need for policies and practices aimed at this issue. It compares underrepresentation of academic women in North American countries, and explores, throughout a bivariate analysis, personal, professional, as well as institutional variables related to this phenomenon. The results of the study, corroborated with national-level data on faculty in the focal countries, showed that the underrepresentation of full-time university faculty, in relation to the percentage of women who earned a PhD, was evident in the participating countries, regardless of the level of development of their economies, as well as of their higher education systems. The study shows that the select few women who remain in the system long enough to secure a tenure-track appointment are not only educational survivors, but also characteristically different from both the men and the women in their peer groups.
