Identifying areas susceptible to invasion by an alien species is a strategy of prevention. We used national herbaria and global databases to assess the invasion trends of the two aquatic invasive species Ludwigia hexapetala and Ludwigia peploidessubsp. montevidensis in Italy. We defined the invasion status with invasions curves and predicted potentially suitable areas with Species Distribution Models based on WorldClim variables and the human footprint index. Low seasonal variation in temperature and precipitation, temperature ≥ 20 °C in the warmest, driest and wettest periods of the year and precipitation in the coldest period are the bioclimatic factors that most account for the potential distribution of the two species. The human footprint has lower relative importance than bioclimatic variables. All Italian peninsula appears as a suitable bioclimatic environment for the invasion of the two Ludwigia species, except the Alps and the highest peaks in the Apennine. Based on the current distribution of the species in Italy and the mostly densely invaded areas globally, the agricultural land surrounding the current invaded areas and along the Italian coasts is the most vulnerable to the invasion. Considering the trend of the invasion curves, which have been sharply rising for the latest decades, there are reasons to expect that the alien Ludwigia species will continue their expansion, if no timely and effective actions are taken. Informative campaigns, accurate monitoring and prompt management are fundamental preventive tools in areas predicted as vulnerable to invasion by this study.

Euphorbia subsection Hypericifoliae (Euphorbiaceae, Malpighiales) comprises 365 species distributed nearly worldwide and includes E. berteroana, a species widespread in Central and South America and mistakenly reported for Italy. This species was described for the first time by Sprengel based on material collected by Bertero. In the present work we provide a discussion of the main typification issues and the typification of the name E. berteroana and its synonym E. bicephala.

Recent works (Jimenez-Mejias & Vargas 2015, Frankiewicz et al. 2021) have improved our knowledge about systematics and phylogeny of the Apiaceae: in detail, the Authors suggested the opportunity to merge several genera within Anethum Linnaeus (1753: 263), namely: Foeniculum Miller (1754: [513]), Ridolfia Moris (1841: 43), Pseudoridolfia Reduron, Mathez & S. R. Downie in Reduron et al. (2009: 496), and Schoenoselinum Jimenez-Mejias & Vargas (2015: 75). In this framework, we think that it is important to typify the names Anethum pusillum All. (Allioni 1773: 28) and Meum segetum Guss. (Gussone 1827: 346), both belonging to this “Anethum alliance” (as defined by Jimenez-Mejias & Vargas 2015 and Frankiewicz et al. 2021), to better define some nomenclatural and taxonomic aspects. In addition to the typifications, we propose here the current correct names (in bold) for both the binomials.

International audience; Giovanni Casaretto (1810-1879) was appointed by King Charles Albert of Savoy-Carignano, Kingdom of Sardinia, as the botanist and mineralogist of a planned circumnavigation of the globe. After collecting in a few localities in southern Brazil and Uruguay, Casaretto collected for almost nine months, from April to December 1839, in Rio de Janeiro and its vicinity. While in Rio, he also bought about 100 collections from Riedel and about 500 collections from Clausen, which were made in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, and Minas Gerais, which he re-numbered and integrated into his collections. He also made significant collections in the state of Bahia, and a few collections in and around Recife (Pernambuco). Based on the preceding collections, Casaretto published a total of 101 names (in 36 plant families, delimited according to APG III), of which, according to the present study, 27 names are currently accepted, 12 serve as basionyms for currently accepted names, 7 are illegitimate due to superfluity, and 55 are heterotypic synonyms of previously published names. All the 101 names of Casaretto are hereby typified, and Eugenia casarettoana Delprete is here proposed as a substitute name for an illegitimate later homonym. In addition, a lectotype and an epitype for Couratari estrellensis Raddi are here designated.

Dioscorea pubescens Poir. (Dioscoreaceae) no fue explicitamente tipificada cuando fue descrita en 1813; Poiret nunca menciono las colecciones de J. Martin s.n. depositadas en FI y P citando solo “V.f. in herb. Desfont.” Por lo que es necesario lectotipificar aqui. Por prioridad, Dioscorea pubescens es el nombre publicado previamente para ser empleado, aunque D. pilosiuscula Bertero ex Spreng., ha sido el nombre tradicionalmente usado desde su descripcion en 1825. Dioscorea pubescens es muy variable, principalmente en su pubescencia y en la forma y tamano de las hojas a traves de su intervalo de distribucion, y es esta variabilidad la razon por la cual este taxon ha sido descrito bajo diferentes nombres, de los cuales 7 son sinonimizados aqui. Tambien, de acuerdo con sugerencias y cambios en el Codigo Internacional de Nomenclatura Botanica, todos los taxones incluidos deben ser lectotipificados.

In this contribution new data concerning the distribution of native vascular flora in Italy are presented. It includes new records, exclusion, extinction and confirmations to the Italian administrative regions for taxa in the generaAndrosace,Artemisia,Fragaria,Melampyrum,Myosotis,Petrorhagia,Phillyrea,Rosa,Rumex,Spiranthes,Trifolium, andVicia. Furthermore, a new combination in the genusOmalothecais proposed.

The name of Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius is closely associated with the Brazilian flora. Martius collected thousands of specimens during his exploration of Brazil from 1817 to 1820, and subsequently was the founder, mentor and promoter of the monumental Flora Brasiliensis. Little known, or simply overlooked, however, is the fact that many of the Brazilian specimens that Martius had distributed to other herbaria, or to his web of collaborators, are not his own collections, but those of other naturalists. The present study concerns the specimens that Martius sent to Luigi Colla in 1827. In volume I of Herbarium Pedemontanum, Colla cited 36 species received from Martius, treating 23 of them as new species. Original material examined by Colla (now held at TO), was found, verified and compared with duplicates held elsewhere. The majority of specimens attributed to Martius were, in fact, collected by Prince Maximilian of Wied. Except for five names whose specimens have not been located at Turin, ...

Astragalus vulnerarioides Allioni (1785a: 343) was first described from Mt. Cenis, between the Cottian and Graian Alps (western Alps, France), probably based on herbarium specimens collected by Allioni. The author cited two illustrations in the protologue, which are consequently original material for the name (Art. 9.3 of the ICN, McNeill et al. 2012). The illustrations were drawn by F. Peyrolery. The first was published in the third volume of Flora Pedemontana (T. XIX, Fig. 2, Allioni 1785b), while the second is an unpublished illustration from the Iconographia Taurinensis (Vol. XV, T. 79, Fig. 2, 1765), a collection of watercolours from the 18th and first half of the 19th centuries, housed in the Library of the Department of Plant Biology of the University of Torino (Forneris 2008). Both these illustrations match Allioni’s’ diagnosis, were cited in the protologue and correspond to the current concept of the species.

Summary Historical botanical collections, are important for many aspects of botanical research (nomenclature, taxonomy and floristics), and for information on past and present Biodiversity. The present paper considers five cases of study in order to point out the role of the Italian Historical botanical collections from Latin America.

The taxa belonging to the genus Aloe published in Synopsis methodica stirpium horti regii taurinensis (Allioni 1760) and in Auctarium ad synopsim meihodicam stirpium horti regii taurinensis (Allioni 1773) were examined. The protologues of Aloe maculata All. and A. verrucosospinosa All. are analysed and lectotypes designated. The homonymy of A. succotrina All. w ith A. succotrina Weston (1770) is recognized, and the lectotype o f this last name designated. Epitypes are selected to fix the application of all three names. Short differential diagnoses o f the three species are given and their distribution ranges discussed; distribution maps based on specimens held in the South African National Herbarium (PRE), KwaZulu-Natal Herbarium (NH). Compton Herbarium (NBG) and the South African Museum Collection (SAM) held in NBG are provided.

Fourteen hitherto unresolved species names are here clarified, and seventeen new synonymies, eighteen lectotypifications, one neotypification, and one new combination are proposed. Based on the collecting localities and comparison with specimens at Herbarium Martii at BR and elsewhere, at least sixteen of the specimens distributed by Martius could be attributed to Prince Maximilian zu Wied. An isolate of the poty virus turnip mosaic virus (TuMV-Ab) showing severe mosaic symptoms inAbutilon theophrasti from Piedmont (northwestern Italy) in 1993, has been found to be of an unusual pathotype and serotype. The isolate was easily transmitted byAphyis gossiypii and Myzus persicae and was not seed-transmitted inA. Theophrasti. The host range of TuMV-Ab was different from that of another Piedmont isolate of TuMV fromAlliaria officinalis and from a TuMV isolate fromBrassica napus. TuMV-Ab was characterized using the reactions on the fourB. Napus lines S4, R4, 165 and S1 as the rare pathotype 7, found only once previously in Europe. Tests with polyclonal antisera indicated that TuMV-Ab was only distantly related to the two other TuMV isolates. Serological characterization with a panel of 30 monoclonal antibodies showed that TuMV-Ab belonged to one of the less common serotypes (JPN).

Summary In 2011, the Societa Botanica Italiana (S.B.I.) promoted a project named “Taxa di piante vascolari descritti per l'Italia: censimento, tipificazione e approfondimenti biosistematici (Vascularplant taxa described for Italy: census, typification and biosystematic analysis)”. This project has two goals: to typify the names of the endemic Italian taxa of vascular plants not yet typified and to identify their type localities. This paper typifies two names published by Carlo Allioni (1728–1804): Alyssum argenteum All. (Brassicaceae) and Sedum alsinifolium All. (Crassulaceae).

Saprophytic Fusarium spp., isolated from the rhizosphere of plants grown in soils suppressive to Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. dianthi , actively colonized the rhizosphere of radish and melon plants. Their rhizosphere competence was higher in comparison to that shown by saprophytic Fusarium spp, isolated from the same suppressive soils, but showing only a slight antagonistic activity. Rhizosphere competence seems, therefore, to play an important role in disease suppressiveness in the studied system. Highly antagonistic and slightly antagonistic Fusarium spp., on the contrary, did not significantly differ for their ability to induce resistance to F.oxysporum f.sp. dianthi carnation plants, by means of preinoculation. Moreover, this phenomenon lasts for only a short period and does not seem, therefore, of practical interest.
