This study presents two simple physiotherapy programs that were implemented for five weeks and showed positive changes in balance, coordination, and motor skills in kindergarteners with ASD. Physiotherapy programs in a gym and games on a smart board with balance plates and an unstable base were applied to improve the physical condition of children with ASD. Thirty children with ASD (4–6 years old) attending special needs kindergarten were enrolled in the study. Three tests were used to assess participants’ physical condition before and after the study: the modified Berg Balance Scale, the Imbalance Coordination Sample, and the Bruininks–Oseretsky Motor Proficiency Test (BOTMP). The resulting mean change, calculated from each group’s scores, shows that the participants who received physical therapy sessions at the smart board had the greatest change of 1.58 points. It shows that the opportunity to play games on a smart board motivates children with ASD to work harder; therefore, it is a simple and easy way to engage children in different types of physical exercise. A slightly smaller change of 1.51 was obtained in the group that received gym sessions. However, working in the gym was more psychologically challenging for the children with ASD due to their lack of desire and motivation. Both methods are relatively simple and easy to apply at home; therefore, parents can make a significant contribution to improving children’s physical condition and that can be an effective tool to assist these individuals with activities in daily life.

Background. Research has shown that musculoskeletal disorders were most commonly found in children aged 4 to 6 years (Daniusevičiūtė-Brazaitė et al., 2019). Therefore, if these negative trends continue, the growing health problems will pose a greater threat to human well-being and become a serious financial burden on the state and society. Currently, technologies are an integral part of everyday life, so the need for interactive games or animated programs cannot be doubted. Research (Lobel et al., 2016) showed that the use of play-based intervention for children significantly improves fine and visual motor performance. Hence, it is important to identify the possible factors to pre-school children’s irregular posture formation. Methods. Thirty children (15 girls and 15 boys) aged 5.6 ± 0.6 years (mean ± SD) participated voluntarily in the study. Interview method was used as a questionnaire for preschool children to determine the level of children’s physical activity, the characteristics of interactive animated educational gaming programs, their impact and motivation when engaging in game programs. Also the assessment of the biomechanical applicability of physical exercises was measured using an inclinometer and Myoton 3 system for muscle tone, elasticity and stiffness, as well as posture assessment. The methods were applied before and after the experiment. Results. All children liked the exercises of intercative animated program on the first (before) day of the study, and 98% answered on the last (after) day of the study. A greater proportion (67%) reported feeling excited when doing the exercises of the interactive animated program for the first time, whereas on the last day of the study, 48% reported feeling excited and 37% happy. Muscle stiffness scores increased on the last (post) day of the study. High measurement reliability was established for all muscle stiffness measurements. Conclusion. The exercises of the interactive animated game program were engaging – all the participants willingly performed the exercises and strong emotions such as excitement, surprise, fun/mischief prevailed during the exercises. The exercises of the interactive animated game program were performed correctly. The measured results of muscle frequency, elasticity and stiffness increased on the last day of the study. Background. Pre-school age is the period of especially fast growth and physical development, characterized by an intensive growth and development of a child’s organism, great changes in the activity of the functional systems, which is affected by increasing physical activeness and fitness (Grinienė & Vaitkevičius, 2009; Howells & Sääkslahti, 2019). Previous studies have identified parental influence as a factor that can shape a child’s physical self–perception and act as a stimulus for physical activity and fitness (Eddolls, McNarry, Stratton, & Mackintosh, 2016). The aim of this study was to indicate physical activity of 5–6-year-old children and to determine the interaction between parents’ physical activity and physical fitness data. Methods. The study involved pre-school age children (n = 59) from 5 to 6 years old: 31 girls and 21 boys; also, their parents (n = 101) were involved: 57 mothers and 44 fathers. Physical activity was measured objectively using the ActiGraph GT3X model. The children performed five physical fitness tests (PFT) according to the Eurofit methodology. Also, parents were asked to fill in questionnaires about their own and their children’s physical activity, and also subjective physical fitness. Results. It turned out that there was a significant difference in the time spent in moderate and moderate to vigorous (MVPA) physical activity between 5 to 6-year-old children (p < .05). Comparing pre-school children’s physical fitness by gender we found that boys were more physically fit than girls when performing long jumps, but girls were more physically fit than boys when performing a sit and reach test (p < .05). Subjectively measured PA identified that 72.6% of parents (of both genders) were sufficiently physically active and 27.4% were inadequate physically active. Conclusion. The results revealed that 6-year-old children spent more time in sedentary time than 5-year-olds, who accumulated more time in moderate and total MVPA physical activity per day. Background. Children with autism disorder show atypical preference for non-social stimuli. Therefore, the deficits of social communication and social interest are primary and usually named features for the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The main idea of the present work was to show that the physiotherapy sessions (PS) were some of the ways that could improve the physical condition of children with ADS. Moreover, the application of such programs increased self-esteem, communication skills and permitted a better adaptation and integration within society. Methods. Eleven children attending kindergarten for children with special needs participated in this investigation. The inclusion criteria were a clinical diagnosis of ASD. All participants had F 84.0 code in their cases and were specified for grade II autism disorder according to the American Psychiatric Association (2014). The investigation process consisted of four stages: the initial testing, the application of the physiotherapy program (PS), the post-application testing and the analysis, interpretation and comparison of obtained results. The investigation process was applied for six weeks. Results. After PS applications, the children’s balance improved by 21.32%, coordination – 23.36%, physical and functional abilities such as speed (13.18%) and explosive leg strength (37.14%). Conclusions. The physiotherapy sessions improved the physical condition of children with ADS: balance, coordination, functional abilities and the explosive leg strength. The capability to do physical exercises in a group, at home or in individual sessions with specialist improved as well. Background. A review of the health and physical activity of children and teenagers in Lithuania over the last twenty years has shown that many aspects of pupil physical capacity have deteriorated between 1992 and 2012 (Venckunas, Emeljanovas, Mieziene, & Volbekiene, 2017). Also research has shown that musculoskeletal disorders were most commonly found in children aged 4 to 6 years (Daniusevičiutė-Brazaitė & Grėbliauskienė, 2019). Hence, it is important to identify the possible factors affecting pre-school children’s irregular posture formation. Methods. The study included 377 preschool children from 4 to 6 years old. Three evaluations were performed in the study: posture (using W. K. Hoeger posture assessment methodology), abdominal and back muscle endurance, and balance (Arcinavičius,, Kesminas, & Milčarek, 2004). Results. Assessing the results of the shoulder position of 5-year-old children, results showed that only 16% had good shoulder posture, satisfactory – 74%, bad – 10%. Age was found to have no effect on posture assessment results. According to the study, balance, back, and abdominal functional capacity were better in 6-year-old children. Conclusion. After analyzing 4-year old children group torso, abdomen, lower spine and legs, we can see that a higher percentage of children had a satisfactory posture in the aforementioned body parts. According to the posture results, the most abnormal part of the body was the abdomen. The study data showed that 6-year-old subjects’ balance, lower spine and abdominal performance were better compared to other age groups. Keywords: preschool child, physical activity, posture.

Background. Insufficient back muscle tone of 6–7-year-old children does not guarantee stable spin curves. The preschool children’s posture is an important society problem that raises the scientists interest (Okely, Trost, Steele, Cliff, & Mickle, 2009), when posture is formed during the pre-school period and taking into account fine motor skills peculiarities, it is possible to ensure the optimal movement function (Rodger & Vishram, 2010). The purpose of this study was to identify the need for animated play programs and risk factors for the development of about 4–7-year-old children’s abnormal posture. Methods. We analysed annual preventive health collaborating with public health professionals and pre-school medical personnel. Two social surveys were conducted using an anonymous online questionnaire for respondents. The first survey included questions to parents/caregivers (interpersonal level) in order to establish the psychomotor development of children up to one year of age and possible causes of abnormal posture formation. The second survey had questions to the kindergarten educators and administration (organizational level) in order to find out the need for animated play programs in the educational process. The survey questions were based on the child’s motor development principles. Research participants were 311 parents/caregivers and 117 kindergarten educators. Anonymous online surveys were conducted between October and December of 2018. Results. According to the analysis of annual preventive health indicators, less than half of the pre-school age children were healthy in Kaunas city and with the age the number of healthy children decreased. Analysis of preventive health checks in pre-school children showed that skeletal muscle disorders were most common in children aged 4 to 6 years. Parents/caregivers, kindergarten educators and the administration indicated that physical activity had a positive effect on the child’s posture in the educational institution, but parents/caregivers had doubts that kindergarten had a favourable environment for the child’s posture correction. Conclusion. As a result, most kindergarten educators and administrators as well as parents/caregivers believed that animated play programs in kindergarten would help to improve posture.

Tyrimo tikslas — ištirti skirtingos temperatūros raumenų nuovargį bei atsigavimą po maksimalių valingų ir nevalingų kojų raumenų izometrinių susitraukimų. Buvo tiriama 10 aktyviai nesportuojančių fiziškai sveikų 18—28 metų amžiaus vyrų: registruota raumens nevalingo izometrinio susitraukimo jėga, sukelta 50 Hz elektros stimulo, ir maksimalioji va- linga jėga. Šie parametrai registruoti prieš krūvį ir praėjus po jo 15 sekundžių, 3, 8 bei 30 minučių. Nuovargiui sukelti taikytas izometrinis fizinis krūvis — 50 kartų po 50 Hz elektros stimulų (vieno stimulo trukmė — 1 s, poilsio — 0,4 s) arba 50 maksimalių valingų raumens izometrinių susitraukimų, kai kelio sąnario kampas — 105 o . Užregistravus kontrolinius parametrus, keturgalvis šlaunies raumuo 2 kartus po 15 minučių buvo pašaldomas 15 o C temperatūros vandenyje, daroma 10 minučių pertrauka, 45 minutes pašildomas 44 o C temperatūros vandenyje arba paliekamas įprastinės temperatūros. Gauti rezultatai parodė, kad nepriklausomai nuo temperatūros raumens susitraukimo jėga labiau sumažėjo krūvio metu raumeniui susitraukiant nevalingai, negu susitraukiant maksimaliai valingai. Kojų rau- menų maksimalioji jėga raumeniui susitraukiant valingai nepriklauso nuo temperatūros, bet raumeniui susitraukiant nevalingai temperatūra yra svarbi raumeniui susitraukiant, kai jėga labiausiai mažėja. Kojų raumenų susitraukimo jėgos atsparumas nuovargiui, raumeniui susitraukiant nevalingai, priklauso nuo pašildymo. Tyrimo tikslas — nustatyti hipertermijos poveikį moterų raumenų nuovargiui ir atsigavimui, raumenį stimuliuojant įvairiais dažniais. Tiriamosios — sveikos fi ziškai aktyvios moterys (n = 6). Jų amžius — 22,2 ± 3,4 m., kūno masė — 63,93 ± 6,74 kg, ūgis — 167,6 ± 7,2 cm. Buvo atliekami du tyrimai — kontrolinis ir eksperimentinis. Eksperimentinis tyrimas nuo kontrolinio skyrėsi tuo, kad jo metu vietoj pramankštos buvo pasyviai sukeliama hipertermija (tiriamosios sėdėdamos 45 min laikė kojas šiltoje vonioje, kurios vandens temperatūra — 44 ± 1 o C). Išlipusios iš vonios, ne vėliau kaip po 5 minučių, tiriamosios buvo sodinamos į specialią dinamometro kėdę ir atliko 2 min trukmės maksimalų valingą izometrinį raumenų susitraukimą (MVJ-2 min). Prieš krūvį ir praėjus 15 ir 300 sekundžių po jo buvo atlie- kamas kontrolinis testavimas (raumuo stimuliuojamas 1, 10, 20, 50, 100 Hz elektros impulsais (stimuliacijos trukmė 1 s) ir TT 100 Hz (stimuliacijos trukmė 250 ms, dažnis 100 Hz)). Registruotas raumenų nevalingo susitraukimo jėgos momentas ir TT 100 Hz sukelto raumenų susitraukimo atsipalaidavimo iki pusės jėgos trukmė. Sukėlus hipertermiją, rektalinė kūno temperatūra vidutiniškai padidėjo 2,08 ± 0,24 o C (p < 0,05), raumenų vidinė temperatūra (3 cm gylyje) — 2,99 ± 0,29 o C (p < 0,05). Hipertermijos eksperimento metu tiriamosios vidutiniškai neteko 0,4 ± 0,07 kg, ir tai sudarė 0,62 ± 0,13% kūno svorio. Išanalizavus fi ziologinį šilumos streso indeksą (10 balų sistema) nustatyta, kad tiriamosios hipertermijos metu patyrė labai didelį fi ziologinį stresą — 8,85 ± 1,13 balų. Pagrindinės tyrimo išvados: 1) hipertermija pagerina trumpalaikį nevalingą raumenų susitraukimą; lokaliai pašil- džius raumenis (pvz., kai jų temperatūra padidėja apie 3 o C) ypač padidėja raumenų susitraukimo greitis ir galingumas, nes padidėjusi temperatūra skatina greitesnį ATP, KP ir glikogeno panaudojimą; 2) hipertermija padidina raumenų nuovargio dydį, atliekant ilgalaikius fi zinius pratimus; 3) didesnis nevalingos jėgos momento rodiklių padidėjimas hipertermijos metu pastebėtas raumenį stimuliuojant dideliais dažniais. Apibendrinant tyrimo rezultatus galima teigti, kad hipertermijos metu kylantis nuovargis gali atsirasti dėl dviejų pagrindinių priežasčių — raumenų lokalių ir centrinės nervų sistemos pokyčių. Following an acute physical exercise, both post-activation potentiation and fatigue of the neuromuscular apparatus may occur. The voluntary recruitment of motor units occurs with frequencies that elicit incompletely fused tetanic contractions and these frequencies are most susceptible for post-activation potentiation as well as low-frequency fatigue. Therefore, the goal of the present study was to investigate which of the processes post-activation potentiation or low-frequency fatigue will be prevalent after 5 s maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). Eight healthy untrained men (age 24—35 years, mass 81.2 ± 5.1 kg) performed maximal sustained isometric knee extension for 5 s at a knee angle of 90 degrees. The contractile properties of quadriceps muscle evoked by electrical stimulation at 1, 7, 10, 15, 20, 50 Hz and 100 Hz, were recorded before and immediately after the exercise and 3, 5, and 10 min following the exercise. The rest interval between muscle electrical stimulation was 3 s. A significant raise of force evoked by 1—15 Hz stimulation was observed immediately after the 5 s MVC exercise (p < 0.01). Later in recovery (at 10 min) the contraction force at 15 Hz and 20 Hz significantly decreased (p < 0.05). Tetanic force at 50 Hz and 100 Hz demonstrated a significant decrease immediately after the exercise and remained depressed up to 3 min (p < 0.01). The ratio of 20 / 50 Hz recorded immediately after the 5 s MVC increased significantly (p < 0.05), however 10 min after the exercise there was a significant decrease compared to its initial level (p < 0.05). The simultaneous occurrence of post-activation potentiation at low stimulation frequencies and suppressed forces at high stimulation frequencies suggests that potentiation and fatigue mechanisms were acting concurrently. Moreover, when post-activation potentiation is lost (in 10 min after the 5 s MVC exercise), the contraction force at low stimulation frequencies decreases resulting in significant low-frequency fatigue. Tyrimo tikslas — nustatyti vyrų ir moterų kinematines savybes ir elektromiogramos rodiklių kaitą atliekant 100 šuolių. Tiriamieji — sveiki fi ziškai aktyvūs vyrai (n = 10) ir moterys (n = 10), kurių amžius 19—23 metai. Vyrų kūno masė — 78,2 ± 6,1 kg, ūgis — 179,8 ± 5,8 cm. Moterų kūno masė — 58,2 ± 6,1 kg, ūgis — 168,4 ± 5,6 cm. Vertikalių šuolių aukščiui matuoti buvo naudojama kontaktinė platforma (60 × 60 cm) ir su ja sujungtas elektroninis šuolio aukščio ir atsispyrimo laiko matuoklis „New Test“ (Suomija). Šuolių metu buvo naudojamas mobilusis goniometras-elek- tromiografas Biometrics Ltd, skirtas žmogaus judesių kinematinėms savybėms ir raumenų elektromiogramai (EMG) registruoti. Nustatant raumenų agonistų elektrinį aktyvumą, prietaiso elektrodai buvo pritvirtinti ant keturgalvio šlaunies raumens vidurinės linijos, o raumenų antagonistų — ant dvigalvio šlaunies raumens vidurinės linijos. Kelio sąnario kampų pokyčiams registruoti goniometro biosensoriai buvo tvirtinami lygiagrečiai kelio sąnariui išorinėje kojos dalyje: viena biosensoriaus dalis tvirtinama ant keturgalvio šlaunies raumeninės fascijos, kita — ant kojų blauzdų raumenų šoninės dalies. Mobilusis goniometras-elektromiografas Biometrics Ltd yra elektriškai izoliuotas. Prieš pradedant registruoti raumenų elektrinį aktyvumą ir kelio sąnario kampų pokyčius, buvo nustatytas 3 V diapazono registravimo mastelis, pasirinktas 1 kHz duomenų registravimo dažnis raumenims aktyvinti ir 2 kHz duomenų registravimo dažnis kelio sąnario kampų pokyčiams fi ksuoti, 4600 mV duomenų registravimo jautrumas raumenų aktyvumui matuoti. Pritvirtinus raumenų elektrinio aktyvinimo elektrodus ir goniometro biosensorius, tiriamasis atsistodavo ant šuolių platformos per kelio sąnarius tiesiomis kojomis. Tada buvo nustatomos nulinės goniometro biosensorių reikšmės ir pradedama šuoliuoti. Raumenų aktyvumui nustatyti apskaičiuota kvadratų vidurkio šaknis (RMS), pasirinktas vėli- nimas 4. Apskaičiuota šuolių trukmė, keturgalvio ir dvigalvio raumens EMG. Šuoliai buvo atliekami nušokant nuo 75 cm aukščio pakylos amortizuojamai tūptelint per kelius iki 90 o kampo. Nustatytas maksimalus pritūpimo kampas per kelius, keturgalvio ir dvigalvio raumens EMG nuo šuolio pradžios iki maksimalaus kelio sąnario kampo pokyčio (T 1 fazė) ir nuo maksimalaus kelio sąnario kampo iki šuolio pabaigos (T 2 fazė). Išanalizavus gautus duomenis nustatyta, kad labiau sumažėjo vyrų šuolio aukštis nei moterų, šuolių trukmė buvo ilgesnė moterų nei vyrų, nors moterys pritūpė mažiau nei vyrai. Agonisto ir antagonisto raumens EMG rodikliai statistiškai reikšmingai sumažėjo tiek vyrų, tiek moterų. Be to, nepastebėta statistiškai reikšmingo skirtumo tarp vyrų ir moterų šuolių atlikimo kinematinių rodiklių kaitos. Tyrimo tikslas — nustatyti aukštos aplinkos temperatūros poveikį karių organizmui atliekant specialųjį žygį. Buvo tiriami fi ziškai aktyvūs (n = 12), 19,5 ± 1,5 metų kariai (vyrai). Jų ūgis — 181,5 ± 4,4 cm, kūno masė testavimo metu — 76,0 ± 7,1 kg. Kariai atrinkti taikant atsitiktinės atrankos metodą. Tyrimo protokolas aptartas ir patvirtintas Kauno regioniniame biomedicininių tyrimų etikos komitete (protokolo Nr. BE-2-443). Tyrimas atliktas Ruklos karinėje įguloje. Tiriamieji prieš eksperimentą buvo supažindinti su jo eiga. Oro temperatūra viso tyrimo metu pastovi (25—27ºC). Prieš specialųjį žygį buvo matuojama oralinė ir rektalinė kūno temperatūra, širdies susitraukimų dažnis, sistolinis ir diastolinis kraujo spaudimas, centrinės nervų sistemos funkcinė būklė. Atlikdami specialųjį (20 min) žygį, kariai turėjo įveikti 2 km trasą su įvairiomis kliūtimis (lipimais ir nusileidimais 6 m aukščio sienele, lindimu 500 m apkasu, nusileidimais virve nuo vienos upės kranto iki kito, pataikymu į taikinį). Specialiojo žygio metu kariai 5, 10 ir 15 minutę turėjo įvertinti savo šiluminę jauseną ir šiluminį komfortą. Iš karto po žygio, praėjus 2, 5, 10 ir 30 min po jo buvo matuojamas širdies susitraukimų dažnis, sistolinis ir diastolinis kraujo spaudimas. Oralinė temperatūra išmatuota iš karto po žygio ir praėjus 5, 10, 30 min po jo. Rektalinė temperatūra buvo matuojama iš karto po žygio. Centrinės nervų sistemos funkcinė būklė registruota praėjus 3 min po žygio. Vertinant širdies ir kraujagyslių sistemos rodiklių kaitą nustatyta, kad širdies susitraukimų dažnis ir sistolinis kraujo spaudimas, lyginant su ramybės būsena, reikšmingai padidėjo (p < 0,05). Iki 15 minutės vidutiniai šiluminės jausenos ir komforto vertinimo rodikliai padidėjo nuo šiek tiek šilta ir šiek tiek nepatogu iki karšta ir labai nepatogu (p < 0,05). Tarp šių rodiklių nustatytas stiprus koreliacinis ryšys (r = 0,99; p < 0,001). Šiuo tyrimu nustatyta, kad atliekant specialųjį žygį aukštos temperatūros aplinkoje vertinti širdies ir kraujagyslių sistemos, oralinės ir rektalinės kūno temperatūros, šiluminės jausenos ir šiluminio komforto bei centrinės nervų sistemos funkcinės būklės rodikliai rodo karių centrinį nuovargį. Tyrimo tikslas — nustatyti duomenų grupavimo metodo panaudojimo galimybę Tepingo testo metu. Vertinant cen- trinės nervų sistemos (CNS) darbingumo ir funkcinės būklės rodiklius, plačiai taikomas Tepingo testas. Duomenys registruojami naudojant specialias kompiuterines programas, sukurtas Lietuvos kūno kultūros akademijos (LKKA) Kineziologijos laboratorijoje pagal Ukrainos kūno kultūros universiteto mokslininkų parengtą CNS funkcinės būklės ir darbingumo rodiklių vertinimo metodiką. Kompiuterinės tyrimų programos pateikia normalizuotas registruojamų rodiklių reikšmes — CNS darbingumo ir funkcinės būklės rodiklius: CNS paslankumo, asimetrijos, nuovargio, ben- drojo darbingumo, anaerobinio darbingumo ir anaerobinio darbo talpos reikšmes. Buvo ištirta 10 sportuojančių asmenų, kurių amžius 17—25 metai. Tyrimai atlikti LKKA Kineziologijos laboratorijoje. Visi tiriamieji atliko klasikinį 60 sekundžių trukmės Tepingo testą, milisekundėmis matuojant laiko intervalus tarp atskirų judesių. Tepingo testo duomenų grupavimas atliktas Kauno technologijos universiteto Taikomosios matema- tikos katedroje. Duomenų grupavimo metodas naudojamas tyrimo duomenų tarpusavio panašumams ir skirtumams analizuoti. Turint duomenų seką — vadinamąją laiko eilutę (matuojant milisekundėmis), po atskiro kompiuterio klaviatūros spustelėjimo atliekamas Tepingo testas. Iš jų galime sudaryti informatyviuosius vektorius, t. y. atlikti duomenų grupavimą. Skai- čiavimai atliekami priklausomai nuo to, kokios informacijos mums reikia, t. y. po kiek piršto judesio trukmių (laiko intervalų) turi būti grupuojama, kad gautume naudingą informaciją. Gavę naujus duomenis — vektorius, galime atlikti matematinius veiksmus, t. y. veiksmus su vektoriais, apskaičiuoti koreliacijos kofi ciento įverčius. Turėdami šio kofi ciento įverčius, gauname naują informaciją apie tiriamo asmens individualių CNS ypatybių poreiškio visumą, realizuojant motorinius aktus, ir galime palyginti atskirų eksperimentinių grupių duomenis. Tyrimo rezultatai atskleidė, kad grupuojant po du intervalus vertinimo rezultatai nėra išsamiausi. Tačiau grupuojant tris ir daugiau intervalų pastebimas mažesnis rezultatų išsibarstymas, ir tai leidžia tiksliau vertinti tyrimo duomenis ir padaryti tikslesnes išvadas. Taigi išsamesnė informacija apie CNS ypatybes, pasireiškiančias Tepingo testo metu, gaunama, kai grupuojami trys intervalai. Tyrimo tikslas — nustatyti koncentrinių pratimų poveikį raumenų nuovargiui ir pažeidai priklausomai nuo raumenų temperatūros ir tiriamojo lyties. Tiriamųjų kontingentą sudarė 19—23 metų moterys (n = 10) (ūgis — 166,4 ± 5,6 cm; kūno svoris — 56,2 ± 6,1 kg; riebalų masė — 17% (10,7 rieb. masė / kg) ir vyrai (n = 10) (ūgis — 177,8 ± 5,8 cm; kūno svoris — 78,2 ± 6,1 kg; riebalų masė — 7,5% (5,6 rieb. masė / kg), atrinkti atsitiktinės atrankos metodu. Ti- riamieji testuoti izokinetiniu dinamometru „Biodex Medical System PRO 3“. Registruotas maksimaliosios jėgos momentas (MJM). Buvo atliekami kontroliniai matavimai (3 kartus tiesiant ir lenkiant koją per kelio sąnarį fi ksuotu 180 o / s greičiu) prieš krūvį, praėjus 10, 30, 60 min ir 24 h po jo. Koncentrinis krūvis — 50 blauzdos tiesimų ir lenkimų 180º / s greičiu, kai raumenys įprastinės temperatūros (ĮTR), pašildyti (tiriamieji 45 min kojas laikė šiltoje vonioje, kurios vandens temperatūra — 44 ± 1ºC (Sargeant, 1987) ir pašaldyti (tiriamieji du kartus po 15 min (darydami 10 min pertrauką) panardindavo kojas į šaltą vonią, kurios vandens temperatūra — 15 ± 1ºC (Eston, Peters, 1999). Tarp tyrimų buvo daroma ne mažesnė kaip mėnesio pertrauka. Vidinė raumenų temperatūra (pradinė ir iš karto po raumenų pašildymo bei pašaldymo, po koncentrinio krūvio) buvo matuojama adatiniu termometru. Kreatinkinazės (CK) aktyvumas kraujo serume nustatytas prieš krūvį ir praėjus 24 h po jo. Raumenų skausmas subjektyviai verti- namas balais po krūvio praėjus 24 h. Kreatinkinazės (CK) aktyvumas kraujo serume, praėjus 24 h po koncentrinio krūvio, reikšmingai padidėjo ir vyrų, ir moterų, palyginti su kontroline reikšme (p < 0,05), kai raumuo buvo įprastinės temperatūros, pašildytas ir pašaldytas. Nustatyta, kad moterų CK aktyvumas kraujo serume reikšmingai skiriasi, kai raumuo ĮTR ir pašaldytas, vyrų — ĮTR ir pašildytas (p < 0,05). Lyginant vyrų ir moterų CK aktyvumo kraujo serume įprastinės temperatūros raumenų reikšmes, praėjus 24 h po krūvio, nustatytas statistiškai reikšmingas skirtumas (p < 0,05). Tiek šildymas, tiek šaldymas prieš koncentrinį krūvį sumažino netiesioginį raumenų pažeidos simptomą — kreatin- kinazės kiekį kraujyje praėjus 24 h po krūvio, tačiau raumenų skausmo temperatūra nepakeitė. Pasyvus šildymas ir šaldymas nepakeitė nei vyrų, nei moterų raumenų nuovargio, atliekant koncentrinius pratimus vidutiniu greičiu. Tyrimo hipotezė — patikrinti, ar grįžtamosios informacijos, kaip papildomo veiksnio, suteikimas tiriamajam turės neigiamos įtakos šuolio į aukštį iš vietos rezultatui, kai šuoliai atliekami 50% maksimaliosios jėgos intensyvumu. Tiriamieji — sveiki trikovės sportininkai vyrai (n = 10). Jų amžius — 20,4 ± 2,5 metų, kūno masė — 77,6 ± 10,1 kg, ūgis — 186,5 ± 7,6 cm. Sportininkai po 10—15 min neintensyvios pramankštos (lėto bėgimo, kai pulso dažnis 120—130 k. / min) ant kontaktinės platformos atliko vertikalius šuolius iš vietos, amortizuojamai pritūpdami per kelių sąnarius iki 90 o kampo (rankos ant juosmens). Buvo atliekami penki maksimalaus aukščio kontroliniai šuoliai (intervalai tarp šuolių — 20 s). Po kiekvieno šuolio sportininkas atsipalaiduodavo nenulipdamas nuo platformos ir laukdavo kito ženklo atlikti maksimalaus aukščio šuolį. Po penkių bandymų buvo nustatomas maksimalus šuolio aukštis, tada skiriamas 50% maksimalaus aukščio šuolių krūvis. Paskui atliekama dar 10 šuolių 50% maksimaliosios jėgos intensyvumu, po kiekvieno pasakomas atlikto šuolio aukštis. Vėliau tiriamieji atliko 10 šuolių, bet jiems nebuvo suteikiama grįžtamoji informacija apie atlikto šuolio aukštį. Tada skirta dar 50 šuolių krūvis, suteikiant trikovininkams grįžtamąją informaciją apie atlikto šuolio aukštį. Po šio krūvio vėl buvo atliekama 10 šuolių, nesuteikiant informacijos apie šuolio aukštį. Testo pabaigoje tiriamiesiems buvo skirti penki maksimalaus aukščio kontroliniai šuoliai. Nustatyta, kad šuolio, atliekamo 50% maksimaliosios jėgos intensyvumu, pakartojimo tikslumas priklauso nuo šuolio, jo ir grįžtamosios informacijos ryšio (esant informacijai ir jos nesant) (p < 0,05). Informacija (su grįžtamuoju ryšiu ir be jo) rezultatui reikšmingos įtakos neturi (p > 0,05). Atliekant šuolius prieš krūvį, kai buvo suteikiama grįžtamoji informacija, pirmo ir antro šuolių aukštis buvo reikšmingai didesnis, lyginant su kontroline reikšme (p < 0,05). Šis pokyčio skirtumas nereikšmingas, kai šuoliai buvo atliekami prieš krūvį ir po jo, nesuteikiant sportininkams grįžtamo- sios informacijos (p < 0,05). Atliekant šuolį į aukštį iš vietos 50 kartų, kai sportininkas gauna grįžtamąją informaciją, rezultato pokytis nepriklauso nuo šuolio aukščio, šuolių imties ir tarp jų nėra koreliacinio ryšio (p > 0,05). Išvados: 1. Atliekant šuolius į aukštį 50% maksimaliosios jėgos intensyvumu, nustatytas beveik tikslus šuolių pakar- tojimas. Toks šuolių į aukštį pakartojimo tikslumas nustatytas prieš krūvį, krūvio metu ir po jo. 2. Šuolio į aukštį pa- kartojimo tikslumas priklauso nuo grįžtamosios informacijos: pirmų dviejų šuolių, suteikiant sportininkui grįžtamąją informaciją, aukštis buvo reikšmingai padidėjęs, palyginti su aukščiu, kai informacija nebuvo suteikta. Tyrimo tikslas — nustatyti vyrų ir moterų kelio tiesiamųjų ir lenkiamųjų raumenų susitraukimo funkcijos priklau- somybę nuo temperatūros. Tiriamųjų kontingentą sudarė 19—23 m. moterys (n = 10) (ūgis — 166,4 ± 5,6 cm; kūno masė — 56,2 ± 6,1 kg) ir vyrai (n = 10) (ūgis — 177,8 ± 5,8 cm; kūno masė — 78,2 ± 6,1 kg), atrinkti taikant atsitik- tinės atrankos metodą. Tiriamieji buvo testuoti izokinetiniu dinamometru. Registravome šiuos kinematinius rodiklius: maksimaliosios jėgos momentą (MJM) ir vidutinį galingumą (VG) (3 kartus tiesiant ir lenkiant koją per kelio sąnarį fi ksuotu 450º / s greičiu), kai raumenys buvo įprastinės temperatūros, pašildyti (tiriamieji 45 min kojas laikė šiltoje vonioje, kurios vandens temperatūra — 45 ± 1ºC) ir pašaldyti (tiriamieji du kartus po 15 min (darydami 10 min pertrauką) panardino kojas į šaltą vonią, kurios vandens temperatūra — 15 ± 1ºC). Tarp tyrimų buvo daroma ne mažesnė kaip mėnesio pertrauka. Matuojama vidinė raumens temperatūra (pradinė) adatiniu termometru. Raumens temperatūros matavimo procedūra pakartotinai atlikta iš karto po raumens šildymo ir šaldymo. MJM ir VG tiesiant ir lenkiant koją per kelio sąnarį fi ksuotu 450º / s greičiu priklauso nuo raumens atliekamo darbo (tiesimo—lenkimo) (p = 0,000) ir lyties (p = 0,000). Tiesiamųjų raumenų MJM ir VG reikšmė (tiek vyrų, tiek moterų) yra didesnė už lenkiamųjų. 45 min raumenį pašildžius (39,5 ± 0,2ºC) ir 30 min pašaldžius (32,5 ± 0,3ºC), vidinė rau- mens temperatūra reikšmingai padidėjo (p < 0,05), palyginti su pradine (prieš šildymą — 36,9 ± 0,1ºC, prieš šaldy- mą — 36,8 ± 0,2ºC). MJM (vyrų — p = 0,875, moterų — p = 0,146) ir VG (vyrų — p = 0,947, moterų — p = 0,296) tiesiant ir lenkiant koją per kelio sąnarį fi ksuotu 450º / s greičiu nepriklauso nuo raumens temperatūros. Gauti rezultatai parodė, kad temperatūros pokytis reikšmingai nepakeitė tiek vyrų, tiek moterų, kelio tiesiamųjų ir lenkiamųjų raumenų maksimaliosios jėgos momento ir vidutinio galingumo rodiklių, tačiau vyrų raumens izokinetinio susitraukimo jėgos ir galingumo reikšmės buvo didesnės negu moterų. Tiesiamųjų raumenų maksimaliosios jėgos momento ir vidutinio galingumo rodiklių reikšmė (tiek vyrų, tiek moterų) yra didesnė už lenkiamųjų. The aim of our study was to establish the dependence of changes in the concentration of creatine kinase, body composition and lipoprotein on the follicular phase and ovulation. The subjects were healthy and physically active women (n = 9) with normal menstrual cycle, whose age was 19—23 years, body weight — 58.2 ± 6.1 kg, height — 168.4 ± 5.6 cm. All the participants had not used oral contraceptives for 6 months and had regular menstrual cycles. Ethical approval was obtained from Kaunas Regional Biomedical Research Ethics Committee (Report Number BE-2-24). Each subject measured her basal body temperature every morning 3 months before the experiment. The basal body temperature increased approximately by 0.3 °C after ovulation, which is sustained throughout the luteal phase. By the basal body temperature we estimated the approximate day of ovulation, and thus the relative length of follicular and luteal phases. We performed two experiments with each participant: in the follicular phase and ovulation. The days of experiment were chosen considering the duration of the menstrual cycle and the ovulation day of each participant. At the beginning of every experiment the body composition values: weight, BMI, body fat mass (%), body fat mass (kg), muscle mass (kg), water amount (kg) were estimated. The samples of 5 ml and 2 ml venum blood were taken toestablish the amount of estradio17β-estradiol, serum total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglyceride and creatine kinase concentration. Creatine kinase concentration was measured 24, 48, 72 hours after the load (100 jumps on the vertical jump force plate from a 75 cm stage). After 10—15 min of not intensive warming-up (slow pedaling veloergometer, heart rate 120—130 b / min) 100 jumps on the vertical jump force plate from a 75 cm stage were performed, with the knee joints flexed up to the angle of 90° (hands on loin). Hormonal analysis confirmed that the subjects were in the correct estrogen status, but no significant change was observed in the body composition and triglyceride values over the menstrual cycle. High density lipoprotein cholesterol and serum total cholesterol values significantly differed in ovulation compared to the values in the follicular phase. Due to the small sample size CK concentration did not significantly differ during the menstrual cycle, but the amount of CK concentration was lager in the follicular phase than in ovulation. Tyrimo tikslas — nustatyti bėgimo greičio ir laipiojimo sukelto nuovargio poveikį kojų raumenų elektriniam aktyvumui didinamo krūvio metu. Tiriamosios — Lietuvos kūno kultūros akademijos aerobikos specializantės (n = 5), kurių amžius 22,8 ± 4,6 m., kūno masė 55,1 ± 5,1 kg, ūgis 1,64 ± 0,03 cm. Tiriamosios tris kartus atliko nuosekliai didinamą krūvį bėgtakiu (NDK) (LE 200 CE, HP Cosmos) — kontrolinį, praėjus vienai ir 24 valandoms po intervalinio 24 minučių laipiojimo prieškrūvio (LP). Tris pirmas minutes bėgimo greitis siekė 7 km / h, nuo ketvirtos bėgimo minutės greitis buvo didinamas kas šešias sekundes po 0,1 km / h. Krūvis buvo nutraukiamas tada, kai tiriamoji dėl nuovargio nebegalėdavo tęsti bėgimo reikiamu greičiu. NDK metu buvo registruojama dešinės kojos šlaunies šoninio ir vidinio plačiojo, blauzdos dvilypio raumens vidinės ir šoninės galvos EMG (Biometrics Ltd, UK). EMG buvo analizuojamos naudojant „Biometrics“ programinį paketą. Buvo skaičiuojama kiekvieno bėgimo žingsnio EMG amplitudės vidutinė kvadratinė vertė (A), integruotas elektrinis raumenų aktyvumas (iEMG) ir EMG galios spektro vidutinis dažnis (VD). Visų NDK metu buvo matuojamas tiriamųjų širdies susitraukimų dažnis pulso matuokliu „Polar S810i“ (Suomija). Kiekvienos NDK minutės pabaigoje tiriamosios buvo prašomos subjektyviai įvertinti savo pastangas, o praėjus 24 valandoms po LP įvertinti jaučiamą skausmą kojų raumenyse balais pagal Borgo (Borg) skales. Nustatėme, kad šlaunies šoninio ir vidinio raumens galvų iEMG ir EMG A vidutinė kvadratinė vertė rodo didėjimo tendenciją praėjus vienai ir ypač 24 valandoms po LP, nors užfi ksuotas tik vienas statistiškai reikšmingas skirtu- mas. EMG galios spektro VD rodo mažėjimo tendenciją, nors skirtumai nėra statistiškai reikšmingi. Abiejų dvilypio blauzdos raumens galvų EMG A vidutinė kvadratinė vertė ir iEMG taip pat šiek tiek padidėjo praėjus vienai ir 24 valandoms po LP (daugiau vidinės galvos) (p > 0,05). EMG galios spektro VD praėjus vienai valandai po laipioji- mo testo sumažėdavo, o po 24 valandų padidėdavo, nors statistiškai reikšmingai skyrėsi tik vidinės galvos minėtas rodiklis, kai greitis buvo 10,5 km / h. Tik EMG A reikšmingai didėjo greitėjant bėgimui, tuo tarpu iEMG ir EMG galios spektro VD reikšmingai nekito. Tyrimo rezultatai parodė, kad intervalinis 24 minučių laipiojimo prieškrūvis, sukeliantis vidutinišką vėluojantį raumenų skausmą, menkai veikė kojų raumenų EMG rodiklius praėjus vienai ir 24 valandoms po krūvio, kai bėgimo greitis buvo nuosekliai didinamas. Tyrimo tikslas — nustatyti moterų psichomotorinės reakcijos greičio priklausomumą nuo menstruacinio ciklo fazių: folikulinės ir ovuliacijos. Tiriamosios — sveikos nesportuojančios, turinčios natūralų mėnesinių ciklą, fi ziškai aktyvios merginos (n = 9), kurių amžius — 19—23 metai, kūno masė — 58,2 ± 6,1 kg, ūgis — 168,4 ± 5,6 cm. Visos tiriamosios nevartojo hormoninių preparatų ne mažiau kaip 6 mėnesius ir turėjo reguliarų menstruacinį ciklą. Kiekvieno eksperimento pradžioje buvo paimamas 5 ml veninio kraujo mėginys menstruacinio ciklo fazėms (folikulinei ir ovuliacinei) nustatyti. Tyrimo metu estradiolio koncentracija kraujyje nustatyta 2 dieną nuo menstruacinio ciklo pradžios (folikulinėje fazėje) ir 14 dieną nuo menstruacinio ciklo pradžios (ovuliacijos metu) (Vaičeliūnienė ir kt., 2006). Kiekviena tiriamoji 7 valandą ryte 3 mėnesius prieš eksperimentą matavo rektalinę temperatūrą — šitaip nustatyta mėnesinių ciklo trukmė, reguliarumas. Psichomotorinės reakcijos laikas (RL) buvo matuojamas reakciometru (RA-1, „Baltec CNC Technologies“, Lietuva), skirtu psichomotorinės reakcijos greičiui ir centrinės nervų sistemos funkcinei būklei vertinti. Savaitę prieš eksperi- mentą kiekviena tiriamoji atskirai buvo mokoma atlikti psichomotorinės reakcijos laiko testą. Tiriamosios buvo mo- komos vieną kartą atlikti po 15 bandymų abiem rankom. Eksperimento metu prieš krūvį ir po jo registruotas kairės ir dešinės rankos reakcijos laikas (nuo lemputės užsidegimo iki klavišo paspaudimo momento (ms)). Tiriamosios atliko 15 bandymų abiem rankom. Su kiekviena tiriamąja atlikti 2 eksperimentai: folikulinėje fazėje ir ovuliacijos metu. Eksperimentų dienas paskirdavo tyrėjas, atsižvelgdamas į kiekvienos tiriamosios mėnesinių ciklo trukmę ir ovuliacijos dieną. Tiriamosios po 10—15 min neintensyvios pramankštos (lėto važiavimo velorgometru, kai pulso dažnis 120— 130 k. / min) ant kontaktinės platformos nuo 75 cm aukščio pakylos atliko 100 šuolių, amortizuojamai pritūpdamos per kelių sąnarius iki 90° kampo (rankos ant juosmens). Laiko intervalas tarp visų šuolių — 20 sekundžių. Išanalizavus gautus duomenis galima teigti, kad reakcija į paprastą dirgiklį buvo ilgesnė ovuliacijos metu nei foliku- linėje fazėje, tačiau šis skirtumas nebuvo statistiškai reikšmingas. Reakcijos į paprastą dirgiklį ir estradiolio koncen- tracijos kraujyje koreliaciniai vertinimai rodė silpną koreliacinį ryšį tiek ovuliacijos metu, tiek folikulinėje fazėje. Research background and hypothesis. Lack of physical activity is influenced by a number of chronic non- infectious, mental (Corbin et al. 2001; Golden et al., 2004) and other diseases (Katzmarzyk et al., 2003). Students’ physical activity and nutrition research remains relevant, especially for those students the future profession of which is not related to physical activity and health. Research aim. The aim of the study was to estimate the relation between physical activity and health among highly and moderately active students. Research methods. All the subjects (n = 327) were grouped according to their physical activity levels. The group highly physically active students – female athletes (n = 32) and male athletes (n = 79) who were physically active more than 3000 minutes per week. The group of moderate physical activity included females (n = 47) and males (n = 169) who were physically active 600–3000 minutes per week (Ainsworth, Levy, 2004). The respondents filled in anonymous questionnaires: the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). The questions dealt with the time being physically active in the last seven days. The survey took place in February–April, 2012. Research results. The subjects in high physical activity group gave a subjective evaluation of their physical activity as high (53%) and moderate (32%). The subjects in the moderate physical activity group evaluated their physical activity as moderate (60%) and high (26%). All subjects in both groups indicated that their health was good. The headache symptoms, stomach, abdominal or back pains, sadness, depression, insomnia and dizziness were rare or not common at all to subjects in high (63%) physical activity group. Sadness, depression, nervous tension and irritability, and bad mood were common to subjects in moderate (59%) physical activity group. The subjects in high physical activity group had their meals three – four times per day (76%), but subjects in moderate group ate only two - three times per day (61%). Irregular lunch and dinner were common to subjects in moderate physical activity group (63%). Discussion and conclusions. Research results showed that subjects in high and moderate physical activity groups gave correct subjective evaluations of their physical activity forms. Also subjects in high physical activity group had breakfast, dinner and supper on regular basis and they had balanced diets more often (p < 0.05). Keywords: physical activity, health, nutrition

Research background and hypothesis. Over the last years, basic research on the effect of different hormones on tendons and ligaments has been initiated. Regarding oestrogen receptor localization in brain and their interaction with neurotransmitters (Maki et al., 2002; Friden et al., 2003; Farage et al., 2008), we speculate that the increase in the level of female sex hormone concentration will improve the sense of movement. Research aim was to study the effect of increased female sex hormone concentration on movement proprioception. Research methods. Subjects were healthy and physically active women (n = 15) with normal menstrual cycle, aged 19–23 years, body weight – 58.2 ± 6.1 kg, height – 168.4 ± 5.6 cm as well as female basketball players (n = 15) with normal menstrual cycle, aged 19–23 years, body weight – 78.31 ± 2.81 kg, height – 182.40 ± 4.71 cm. We performed three experiments with each participant: in follicular phase, ovulation and luteal phase. The samples of 5 ml venom blood were taken to establish the amount of estradio17β-estradiol and progesterone concentration. The sense of knee joint position was evaluated using isokinetic dynamometer (System 3; Biodex Medical Systems, Shirley, New York, USA). During a training session, a subject’s right leg was flexed at the knee joint and fixed at the angle of 90°. Prior to each test, the researcher demonstrated the target angle of 60° by stretching subject’s leg. In order to train the flexion of the knee joint, a subject’s right leg was extended at the knee joint and fixed at the angle of 0°. The researcher demonstrated the target angle of 50° by flexing subject’s leg. The subjects had to perform three tests at the velocity of 2°/s, 5°/s and 10°/s with their eyes open and closed. Research results. Females in the control group performed knee joint proprioception task better with an extended knee at velocity of 2°/s with open eyes during the follicular phase, but at the velocity of 10°/s the values were better during ovulation. Basketball players performed the same task better at velocity of 5°/s during ovulation, but at velocity of 10°/s the values were better during the luteal phase. Females in control group performed knee joint proprioception task with an extended knee at the velocity of 5°/s with closed eyes better during the luteal phase. No statistical difference between control group and basketball player indices of knee joint position proprioception task with a flexed knee at velocity of 2°/s, 5°/s and 10 °/s with closed eyes during the menstrual cycle was found. Discussion and conclusion. Knee joint proprioception indices were better during ovulation phase in control group and basketball players. Background.The purpose of this study is to estimate physical activity, physical ftness and assessment of mathematical achievements in primary schoolchildren. Methods. The study involved 1st grade students (N = 93), 45 of which were girls and 48 were boys. The flexibility test, the long jump test, 3 × 10 m speed shuttle run test, a medical (stuffed) 1 kg ball pushing from the chest test were used. Physical activity was measured using Children’s Physical Activity Questionnaire. Academic achievements were assessed using Mathematical diagnostic progress tests and mathematical learning achievements according to curriculum content. Results. It turned out that both boys (95.87 MET/min/week) and girls (91.30 MET / min/ week) were physically active in physical education lessons (p > 0.05). Long jump results ranged from 105.2 cm (girls) to 118.3 cm (boys), statistically signifcant differences were detected (p < 0.05) The best score of the girls’ shuttle running 3 × 10 m was 9.55 s, for boys it was 9.2 s, the worst performance time for boys was 13.68 s, for girls – 13.54 s (p < .05). Mathematics Diagnostic Progress Tests for both girls and boys indicated satisfactory levels. Conclusion. We should note that all 4 ftness tests had a positive, linear association with physical ftness testsand mathematics test scores. Preschool education is one of the most important priorities of modern educational policies and the basis of lifelong learning. Health-literate educators and parents are better equipped to instill sustainable health practices in young children. Therefore, it is important to examine health literacy and determine how preschool educators and parents perceive the continuous development of health competencies within the framework of sustainability. The quantitative survey results revealed the dominant levels of general health literacy among respondents: problematic (31.1% vs. 33.5%) and sufficient (39.8% vs. 43.3%) for parents and teachers, respectively. Parents’ attitudes toward the development of children’s health competence within the framework of sustainability in preschool showed that parents and educators understand that their role is one of the most important factors in strengthening children’s health competence. However, most respondents spend only 2 h being active with children on healthy lifestyles (61.5% vs. 55%) for parents and teachers, respectively. A moderate correlation was found between health literacy and the weekly time spent developing children’s health competencies (r = 0.526). In addition, educators and parents who always or very often focus on the development of children’s health competence seek to plan daily activities in a way that would enhance health promotion (r = 0.463). Within the framework of sustainability, this influence becomes even more pronounced as sustainable health education aims to instill long-lasting, holistic health practices that benefit individuals and communities over time.

Background: One of the most challenging environmental extremes is immersion in cold/icy water, and consequent common assumption is that even a brief exposure to cold can lead to cold-related illnesses. The increase in the concentrations of the stress hormones cortisol, epinephrine (Epi), and norepinephrine (NE) in response to acute cold stress are thought to suppress the release of proinflammatory cytokines. No previous study has explored the residual consequences of whole-body short-term cold-water immersion (CWI; 14 °C for 10 min) on the immune response in healthy non-acclimated young adult men (aged 20–30 years). Materials and methods: In the current study, we tested the hypothesis that short-term acute whole-body CWI would induce high blood levels of cortisol, NE, and Epi, which in turn would increase circulating leukocyte numbers and delay the production of proinflammatory cytokines (tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), interleukin 1β (IL-1β), and IL-6). Results: Short-term whole-body CWI produced a stressful physiological reaction, as manifested by hyperventilation and increased muscle shivering, metabolic heat production, and heart rate. CWI also induced the marked release of the stress hormones Epi, NE, and cortisol. The change in IL-6 concentration after CWI was delayed and TNF-α production was decreased, but IL-1β was not affected within 48 h after CWI. A delayed increase in neutrophil percentage and decrease in lymphocyte percentage occurred after CWI. Conclusion: These findings suggest that, even though CWI caused changes in stress and immune markers, the participants showed no predisposition to symptoms of the common cold within 48 h after CWI.

Background: Although acute thermal stress appears to be one of the most effective stressors that increase the intra- and extracellular concentrations of heat shock protein 72 (Hsp72), 17β-estradiol has been shown to inhibit heat-induced Hsp72 expression. Materials and Methods: To determine whether severe whole-body hyperthermia (increase in rectal temperature up to 39.5 °C) induced by lower-body heating is a sufficient stimulus to modulate hormonal (17β-estradiol, progesterone, prolactin, epinephrine, and norepinephrine) and extracellular Hsp72 responses, we investigated young adult women (21 ± 1 yr). Results and Conclusions: In the present study, we show that a severe whole-body hyperthermia (increase in rectal temperature of approximately 2.6 °C and heart rate of approximately 80 bpm from baseline) was sufficient to increase 17β-estradiol, progesterone, and prolactin and catecholamine norepinephrine concentration. Moreover, we show that the concentration of extracellular Hsp72 and catecholamine epinephrine were not affected by severe whole-body hyperthermia in young adult women. From the functional point of view, expression of ovarian hormones induced by passive heat stress may have therapeutic potential for young adult women in, for example, estrogen treatment and overall women’s health.

Healthy aging is associated with a progressive decline in motor performance and thermoregulatory efficiency. Functional consequences of severe whole-body hyperthermia on neurophysiological functions in healthy aged men have not been investigated. To determine whether severe whole-body hyperthermia (increase in rectal temperature of about 2.5 °C) induced by lower-body heating in older men (64–80 years, n = 9) would suppress excitability of reflexes, voluntarily and electrically induced ankle plantar flexor contractile properties were compared with those in young men (19–21 years, n = 11). Though no aging effect on hyperthermia-induced reflex amplitudes was observed, a decrease in maximal H-reflex and V-wave latencies was found to be greater in older than in young men. In older men, lower-body heating was accompanied by a significant increase in twitch and tetani test torque in parallel with a greater decrease in muscle contraction time. There was no temperature-depended aging effect on the voluntary activation and maximal voluntary torque production. Despite delayed and weakened thermoregulation and age-related decline in neuromuscular function, motor performance in whole-body severe hyperthermia is apparently preserved in healthy aging.

The main aim of our study was to determinate whether a repeated bout (RB) (vs. first bout [FB]) of sprint interval cycling exercise (SIE) is sufficient to mitigate SIE-induced psychological and physiological biomarker kinetics within 48 h after the exercise. Ten physically active men (age, 22.6 ± 5.2 years; VO2max, 44.3 ± 5.7 ml/kg/min) performed the FB of SIE (12 repeats of 5 s each) on one day and the RB 2 weeks later. The following parameters were measured: motor performance (voluntary, electrically induced and isokinetic skeletal muscle contraction torque, and central activation ratio [CAR]); stress markers [brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), cortisol, norepinephrine, and epinephrine]; inflammatory markers (IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-α); metabolic markers (glucose and lactate); muscle and rectal temperature; cycling power output; and psychological perceptions. The average cycling power output and neuromuscular fatigue after exercise did not differ between the FB and RB. There were significant decreases in cortisol and BDNF concentration at 12 h (P < 0.05) and 24 h (P < 0.001) after the FB, respectively. The decrease in cortisol concentration observed 12 h after exercise was significantly greater after the RB (P < 0.05) than after the FB. The immune-metabolic response to the RB (vs. FB) SIE was suppressed and accompanied by lower psychological exertion. Most of the changes in psychological and physiological biomarkers in the FB and RB were closely related to the response kinetics of changes in BDNF concentration.

We evaluated gender-specific effects of two types of undergarments on exercise-induced physiological and psychological stress and subsequent recovery in cold conditions for male and female participants. Ten healthy men and eleven healthy women (25.0 ± 1.5 versus 23.4 ± 1.2 years old, respectively) completed the experimental session twice with two different types of undergarments: polyester or merino wool leggings and long-sleeve tops; specifically, merino fabric had greater thermal resistance and water absorbency, and less water vapor as well as air permeability than polyester. Experimental sessions involved performing 1 h of exercise on a cycle ergometer at 8°C ambient temperature and 55% relative humidity, holding at 70–80 revolutions per minute and 60% of each participant’s predetermined maximal power output (assessed by maximal oxygen uptake test), followed by 1 h recovery in the same environment. Every 5 min during exercise and every 10 min during recovery, rectal temperature, heart rate, subjective ratings for thermal, shivering/sweating and clothing wetness sensations, and clothing next-to-skin and outer side surface temperature and humidity on the chest, back and thigh were recorded. All participants experienced high physiological stress (assessed by physiological strain index) during exercise. No significant gender differences were found in core temperature or heart rate changes during exercise, but women cooled down faster during recovery. Next-to-skin humidity was similar between genders and different garment sets during exercise and recovery, but such temperatures at the chest during exercise and at the thigh during exercise and recovery were lower in women with both sets of garments. Subjective thermal sensations were similar in all cases. In the last 20 min of cycling, women started to feel wetter than men (P < 0.05) for both garment sets. Shivering was reported as stronger in women in the last 10 min of recovery. Most of the changes in the garment microclimates during exercise and recovery in the cold were associated with gender-related differences rather than with fabric-related differences.

AbstractBackground: It is well known that cold exposure experienced during occupational or recreational activities may adversely affect motor, cognitive performance and health. Most research has used prolonged passive external rewarming modalities and focused on the direct effects on the kinetics of physiological and psychological responses in hypothermic subjects. However, the brief whole body rewarming effects on physiological and psychological responses in parallel with functional consequences on cognitive and neurophysiological functions have not been investigated. This study explores these effects in twelve healthy young men.Methods: Subjects (20±1 years) participated in 4 randomized trials, which were designed to compare the effects of whole-body brief (5-min) rewarming in 37°C water with rewarming for the same duration in 24°C (air) thermoneutral environment in mildly hypothermic subjects. Here, we address the question of why some people have a greater chance of surviving and/or better resistance to cold-related-injuries in prolonged exposure to acute cold environments than do others, despite similar physical characteristics. The main aim of this study was to compare physiological and psychological reactions between people who exhibited fast cooling (FC; n = 20) or slow cooling (SC; n = 20) responses to cold water immersion. Individuals in whom the T(re) decreased to a set point of 35.5 °C before the end of the 170-min cooling time were indicated as the FC group; individuals in whom the T(re) did not decrease to the set point of 35.5 °C before the end of the 170-min cooling time were classified as the SC group. Cold stress was induced using intermittent immersion in bath water at 14 °C. Motor (spinal and supraspinal reflexes, voluntary and electrically induced skeletal muscle contraction force) and cognitive (executive function, short term memory, short term spatial recognition) performance, immune variables (neutrophils, leucocytes, lymphocytes, monocytes, IL-6, TNF-α), markers of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity (cortisol, corticosterone) and autonomic nervous system activity (epinephrine, norepinephrine) were monitored. The data obtained in this study suggest that the response of the FC group to cooling vs the SC group response was more likely an insulative-hypothermic response and that the SC vs the FC group displayed a metabolic-insulative response. The observations that an exposure time to 14 °C cold water--which was nearly twice as short (96-min vs 170-min) with a greater rectal temperature decrease (35.5 °C vs 36.2 °C) in the FC group compared with the SC group--induces similar responses of motor, cognitive, and blood stress markers were novel. The most important finding is that subjects with a lower cold-strain-index (SC group) showed stimulation of some markers of innate immunity and suppression of markers of specific immunity.

The time course of physiological and psychological markers during cold acclimation (CA) was explored. The experiment included 17 controlled (i.e., until the rectal temperature reached 35.5°C or 170 min had elapsed; for the CA-17 session, the subjects (n = 14) were immersed in water for the same amount of time as that used in the CA-1 session) head-out water immersions at a temperature of 14°C over 20 days. The data obtained in this study suggest that the subjects exhibited a thermoregulatory shift from peripheral-to-central to solely central input thermoregulation, as well as from shivering to non-shivering thermogenesis throughout the CA. In the first six CA sessions, a hypothermic type of acclimation was found; further CA (CA-7 to CA-16) led to a transitional shift to a hypothermic-insulative type of acclimation. Interestingly, when the subjects were immersed in water for the same time as that used in the CA-1 session (CA-17), the CA led to a hypothermic type of acclimation. The presence of a metabolic type of thermogenesis was evident only under thermoneutral conditions. Cold-water immersion decreased the concentration of cold-stress markers, reduced the activity of the innate immune system, suppressed specific immunity to a lesser degree and yielded less discomfort and cold sensation. We found a negative correlation between body mass index and Δ metabolic heat production before and after CA.
