LTRs flanking the proviral genome in retroviruses are functionally divided into three regions: U3, R and U5. Transcription starts in the first nucleotide of the 5’ R and the region just upstream (5’ U3) contains sites which bind cellular factors and trigger transcription, known as TBS. Retroviruses may become endogenous when they infect germ cells, being transmitted throughout generations. In this review we have used the algorithm ALGGEN to analyze the presence of TBS in the U3 region of both endogenous and exogenous retroviruses. Exogenous retroviruses have included different gammaretroviruses (gibbon ape leukemia virus, GALV; murine leukemia virus, MuLV; koala retrovirus, KoRV and feline leukemia virus, FeLV). Endogenous retroviruses studied were related to FeLV (enFeLV). The most abundant TBS found were related to the immune response (adaptive and innate). Many TBS were arranged in clusters combining six or more overlapping sites, and polymorphisms mostly occurred outside the TBS. The number of TBS was similar in most LTRs analyzed. The analysis of TBS may explain the pathogenesis of each viral type. The high degree of conservation of TBS in endogenous sequences supports their importance.

A apicultura familiar está em expansão nos vários Estados brasileiros, entretanto, é uma atividade agraria que requer capacitação, gerenciamento de tecnologia e apoio governamental. Com o objetivo de garantir o controle de qualidade e segurança dos produtos apícolas, o estudo buscou avaliar o impacto das condições ambientais do Vale do Ribeira no manejo apícola e na produção do mel de cinco comunidades quilombolas com relação aos conteúdos de umidade do mel, umidade relativa do ar e temperatura do ar, assim como de sua origem botânica. Os resultados suscitaram a identificação da origem floral do mel como Silvestre de Mata Atlântica, cujo aproveitamento da flora apícola nativa foi incentivado aos apicultores dentro dos padrões internacionais de desenvolvimento sustentável. Os resultados físico-químicos forneceram subsídios para boas práticas na apicultura familiar e desenvolvimento de estratégias de melhoramento do processo para obtenção de um mel com maior tempo de prateleira, o que trouxe benefícios pela maior qualidade final do produto, adequado para o consumo.

The oceanic islands of the Gulf of Guinea display a large diversity of environmental conditions and biological communities, whose interactions have contributed to the development of a great variety of ecosystems, from mangroves to montane grasslands. Human activities have extensively and profoundly altered many of these natural ecosystems over the past five centuries. We review key studies to propose an updated classification map of terrestrial ecosystems, taking advantage of up-to-date spatial information on abiotic gradients and biological distributions. To guide future research and conservation programs, we highlight challenges and pending questions regarding our understanding of the structure, integrity, and dynamics of terrestrial ecosystems in these islands.

Despite a long history of botanical collecting in the three oceanic islands of the Gulf of Guinea, no recent studies have documented floristic patterns. This chapter summarizes information on the vascular plants of the islands, including inventories conducted on Príncipe and São Tomé since 2017, as well as two recent expeditions to Annobón. An updated database of the vascular flora was compiled, which includes 14,376 records representing 1285 species and infraspecific taxa (1028 native). Príncipe has 445 species and infraspecific taxa (394 native), São Tomé has 1044 (842 native), and Annobón has 344 (274 native). Recent inventory work has generated collections of more than 90% of the endemic woody species. Several very rare taxa were rediscovered, includingBalthasaria mannii(Oliv.) Verdc., 1969 (Pentaphylacaceae) andPsychotria exelliiR. Alves, Figueiredo and A.P. Davis, 2005 (Rubiaceae), neither of which had been seen for more than 50 years. At least 17 species new to science were also discovered on Príncipe and São Tomé. Of the 1028 indigenous taxa, 164 (16%) are currently considered endemic to the islands. Of the 285 species evaluated according to the IUCN Red List criteria, 2 (0.7%) were Data Deficient, 226 (79.3%) Least Concern or Near Threatened, 55 (19.3%) threatened (including 3 Critically Endangered, 21 Endangered, and 31 Vulnerable), and 2 (0.7%) Extinct. On São Tomé and Príncipe, 325 plant species are used in traditional medicine, 37 of which are endemic. These results should be used to identify new priority sites for conservation, including on Annobón, where priority sites are less well defined.

The aim of this study was to assess emergency room frequentation, visit causes, and unscheduled readmissions within the first year after discharge from hospital following liver transplantation. Their impact on graft and patient survival was also assessed. This was a retrospective study of the medical records of 98 patients (mean age, 55.6 ± 8.59 years, 77.6 % males) who were consecutively discharged from hospital after undergoing a first liver transplant in our institution during 2012-2015. All visits to the emergency room during the first years after transplantation were analyzed, and survival at two years after transplantation was calculated. Fifty-six of the 98 patients (57.15 %) visited the emergency room on 117 occasions within the first year post-transplantation. Fever (n = 34; 29.05 %) and digestive symptoms (n = 32; 27.35 %) were the most common causes of consultation, and resulted in over half of visits. Thirty-five of these 56 patients (62.5 %) required an urgent readmission during 50 of the 117 (42.7 %) visits. This was primarily due to infectious complications (44 %) of diverse causes (bacterial pneumonia, cholangitis, Clostridium difficile colitis) and biliary tract-related issues. The likelihood of readmission increased from 11.22 % at 30 days after discharge to 22.4 % at 90 days after discharge. Patient survival at 1 and 2 years after transplantation was lower for patients who were readmitted (88.4 % and 80.7 %, respectively) when compared to those who were not readmitted (95.56 % and 91.17 %, respectively, p = 0.002).

Fifty-four consecutive persons with HIV co-infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and liver decompensation were treated with direct-acting antivirals (DAA). The HCV treatment was delivered using a multidisciplinary HIV-coinfection model of care integrating sub-specialty services in 3 countries. Of those treated, 91% (95% confidence interval, 80.1 to 95.9) achieved sustained viral response, and only one person died during treatment. Our study provides evidence that HIV providers achieve excellent outcomes when treating patients with histories of decompensated liver disease, with characteristics similar to those studied using a multidisciplinary HIV-centered approach. © The Author(s) 2021.

The pollen contents of 34 Apis mellifera honey samples from the Quilombola Community of Porto Velho (Vale do Ribeira, state of Sao Paulo, Brazil) were studied in order to identify their botanical and geographical origin. A total number of 114 pollen types distributed in 43 families were identified. Fabaceae pollen types were the most diverse (20). Dominant pollen was observed in 27 samples. The dominant type Piper was found in 21 samples and Zanthoxylum, Mikania cordifolia, Cupania oblongifolia, Cecropia, Attalea and Poaceae only in one sample. The quantitative analysis revealed a predominance of very-high pollen concentrations in the samples (Category IV, 35.3%). A second frequency of occurrence analysis revealed 67 pollen types from 26 botanical families from nectariferous species. Fabaceae was also the family with the largest number of nectariferous pollen types (15), followed by Sapindaceae, Asteraceae (six pollen types each), and Euphorbiaceae (five types). Background The efficacy of licensed direct-acting antiviral (DAA) regimens is assumed to be the same for hepatitis C virus (HCV)–monoinfected patients (HCV-Mono) and HIV/HCV-coinfected patients (HCV-Co). However, the high sustained viral response (SVR) rates of DAA regimens and the small number of HIV-infected patients included in registration trials have made it difficult to identify predictors of treatment failure, including the presence of HIV. Methods We compared treatment outcomes for ledipasvir/sofosbuvir (LDV/SOF) against HCV G1 in treatment-naïve HCV-Mono and HCV-Co without cirrhosis in a prospective registry of individuals receiving DAAs for HCV. Results Up to September 2017, a total of 17 269 patients were registered, and 1358 patients (1055 HCV-Mono/303 HCV-Co) met the inclusion criteria. Significant differences between HCV-Mono and HCV-Co were observed for age, gender, and G1 subtype distribution. Among HCV-Co, 99.0% were receiving antiretroviral therapy. SVR rates for LDV/SOF at 8 weeks did not differ significantly between HCV-Mono and HCV-Co (96.9% vs 94.0%; P = .199). However, the SVR rate for LDV/SOF at 12 weeks was significantly higher for HCV-Mono than HCV-Co (97.2% vs 91.8%; P = .001). A multivariable logistic regression model including age, sex, liver stiffness, G1 subtype, HCV-RNA, HIV, and treatment duration showed the factors associated with treatment failure to be male sex (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 2.49; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.27–4.91; P = .008) and HIV infection (aOR, 2.23; 95% CI, 1.13–4.38; P = .020). Conclusions The results of this large prospective study analyzing outcomes for LDV/SOF against HCV G1 in treatment-naïve noncirrhotic patients suggest that HIV infection is a predictor of treatment failure in patients with chronic hepatitis C.

The demand for multifunctional requirements in aerospace, military, automobile, sports, and energy applications has encouraged the investigation of new composite materials. This study focuses on the development of multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) filled polypropylene composites and carbon nanofiber composite mats. The developed systems were then used to prepare interlayered composites that exhibited improved electrical conductivity and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding efficiency. MWCNT-carbon nanofiber composite mats were developed by centrifugally spinning mixtures of MWCNT suspended in aqueous poly(vinyl alcohol) solutions. The developed nanofibers were then dehydrated under sulfuric acid vapors and then heat treated. Interlayered samples were fabricated using a nanoreinforced polypropylene composite as a matrix and then filled with carbon fiber composite mats. The in-plane and through-plane electrical conductivity of an eight-layered flexible carbon composite (0.65 mm thick) were shown to be 6.1 and 3.0 &times, 10&minus, 2 S&middot, cm&minus, 1, respectively. The EMI shielding effectiveness at 900 MHz increased from 17 dB for the one-layered composite to 52 dB for the eight-layered composite. It was found that the reflection of the electromagnetic waves was the dominating mechanism for EMI shielding in the developed materials. This study opens up new opportunities for the fabrication of novel lightweight materials that are to be used in communication systems.

Background Little is known about the influence of ongoing barriers to care in the persistence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) viremia after treatment with direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) among people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLWH). Methods We conducted a retrospective cohort analysis of PLWH treated through the standard of care in 3 Western countries, to investigate the predictors of HCV treatment failure (clinical or virologic), defined as having a detectable serum HCV ribonucleic acid within 12 weeks after DAA discontinuation. In addition to HCV and liver-related predictors, we collected data on ongoing illicit drug use, alcohol abuse, mental illness, and unstable housing. Logistic regression analyses were used to identify predictors of HCV treatment failure. Results Between January 2014 and December 2017, 784 PLWH were treated with DAA, 7% (n = 55) of whom failed HCV therapy: 50.9% (n = 28) had a clinical failure (discontinued DAA therapy prematurely, died, or were lost to follow-up), 47.3% (n = 26) had an HCV virologic failure, and 1 (1.8%) was reinfected with HCV. Ongoing drug use (odds ratio [OR] = 2.60) and mental illness (OR = 2.85) were independent predictors of any HCV treatment failure. Having both present explained 20% of the risk of any HCV treatment failure due to their interaction (OR = 7.47; P < .0001). Predictors of HCV virologic failure were ongoing illicit drug use (OR = 2.75) and advanced liver fibrosis (OR = 2.29). Conclusions People living with human immunodeficiency virus with ongoing illicit drug use, mental illness, and advanced liver fibrosis might benefit from enhanced DAA treatment strategies to reduce the risk of HCV treatment failure.

Understanding the molecular processes that lead to the formation, structure, and transport properties of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) found in lithium ion batteries with silicon anodes is of paramount importance for the development of lithium ion batteries (LiB) capable of performing under the extreme exigencies of our present energy needs that are solved presently with nonrenewable energies. We use a combined density functional theory (DFT) and Green’s function approach (DFT-GF) to study the electron transport characteristics in selected finite models of materials formed at the SEI located between the silicon surface of the anode of Li-ion batteries and the electrolyte solvent. The SEI products examined are lithium carbonate (LiCO3) silicon oxide (SiO2) and lithium disilicate (Li2Si2O5). We evaluated treatment outcomes in a prospective registry of human immunodeficiency virus/hepatitis C virus (HCV)-coinfected patients treated with interferon-free direct-acting antiviral agent-based therapy in hospitals from the region of Madrid between November 2014 and August 2016. We assessed sustained viral response at 12 weeks after completion of treatment and used multivariable logistic regression to identify predictors of treatment failure. We evaluated 2,369 patients, of whom 59.5% did not have cirrhosis, 33.9% had compensated cirrhosis, and 6.6% had decompensated cirrhosis. The predominant HCV genotypes were 1a (40.9%), 4 (22.4%), 1b (15.1%), and 3 (15.0%). Treatment regimens included sofosbuvir (SOF)/ledipasvir (61.9%), SOF plus daclatasvir (14.6%), dasabuvir plus ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir (13.2%), and other regimens (10.3%). Ribavirin was used in 30.6% of patients. Less than 1% of patients discontinued therapy owing to adverse events. The frequency of sustained viral response by intention-to-treat analysis was 92.0% (95% confidence interval, 90.9%-93.1%) overall, 93.8% (92.4%-95.0%) for no cirrhosis, 91.0% (88.8%-92.9%) for compensated cirrhosis, and 80.8% (73.7%-86.6%) for decompensated cirrhosis. Roughly 10 % of HIV-positive individuals worldwide have concomitant chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, with large differences between geographical regions and/or risk groups. Hepatitis B is a preventable infection with vaccines. However, it cannot be eradicated once acquired, resembling HIV and in contrast with HCV. In developed countries, hepatitis B exhibits particular features in the HIV population. First, HBV infection is less frequently misdiagnosed than in the general population. Second, nucleos(t)ide analogs active against HBV are widely used as part of antiretroviral combinations and are taken by most HIV patients. Lastly, as the HIV population ages given the success of antiretroviral therapy, non-AIDS co-morbidities are becoming a major cause of disease, for which specific drugs are required, increasing the risk of interactions and hepatotoxicity. Furthermore, concern on HBV reactivation is rising as immunosuppressive drug therapies are increasingly been used for cancers and other non-malignant conditions. In this scenario, new challenges are emerging in the management of hepatitis B in HIV-positive individuals. Among them, major interest is focused on failures to suppress HBV replication, HBV breakthroughs and reactivations, the meaning of isolated anti-HBc, screening for liver cancer, and the complexity arising when hepatitis viruses C and/or D are additionally present. This review will focus on these challenges and the major advances in HBV coinfection in HIV.

Coating silicon particles with a suitable thin film has appeared as a possible solution to accommodate the swelling of silicon upon lithiation and its posterior cracking and pulverization during cycling of Li-ion batteries. In particular, aluminum alkoxide (alucone) films have been recently deposited over Si anodes, and the lithiation and electrochemical behavior of the system have been characterized. However, some questions remain regarding the lithium molecular migration mechanisms through the film and the electronic properties of the alucone film. Here we use density functional theory, ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, and Green's function theory to examine the film formation, lithiation, and reactivity in contact with an electrolyte solution. It is found that the film is composed of Al-O complexes with 3-O or 4-O coordination. During lithiation, Li atoms bind very strongly to the O atoms in the most energetically favorable sites. After the film is irreversibly saturated with Li atoms, it becomes electronically conductive. The ethylene carbonate molecules in liquid phase are found to be reduced at the surface of the Li-saturated alucone film following similar electron transfer mechanisms as found previously for lithiated silicon anodes. The theoretical results are in agreement with those from morphology and electrochemical analyses.

Current treatment with oral nucleos(t)ides entecavir or tenofovir provide sustained suppression of HBV replication and clinical benefit in most chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infected persons. However, HBV rebound generally occurs upon drug discontinuation due to persistence of genomic HBV reservoirs as episomic cccDNA and chromosomic integrated HBV-DNA. There is renewed enthusiasm on HBV drug discovery following recent successes with antivirals for hepatitis C and immunotherapies for some cancers. Areas covered: New drugs that target distinct steps of the HBV life cycle are been developed, including inhibitors of viral entry, new polymerase inhibitors, capsid and assembly inhibitors, virus release blockers, and disruptors of cccDNA formation and transcription. Alongside these antivirals, agents that enhance anti-HBV specific immune responses are being tested, including TLR agonists, checkpoint inhibitors and therapeutic vaccines. Expert opinion: The achievement of a 'functional cure' for chronic HBV infection, with sustained HBsAg clearance and undetectable viremia once medications are stopped, represents the next step in the pace towards HBV elimination. Hopefully, the combination of new drugs that eliminate or functionally inactivate the genomic HBV reservoirs (cccDNA and integrated HBV-DNA) along with agents that enhance or activate immune responses against HBV will lead to a 'definitive cure' for chronic HBV infection.

Solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) films are formed on the electrode surfaces due to aggregation of products of reduction or oxidation of the electrolyte. These films may grow to thicknesses in the order of 50-100 nm and contain a variety of organic and inorganic products but their structure is not well defined. Although in some cases the films exert a passivating role, this is not always the case, and these phenomena are particularly more complex on Silicon anodes due to swelling and cracking of the electrode during lithiation and delithiation. Since the driving force for SEI growth is electron transfer, it is important to understand how electron transfer may keep occurring through the heterogeneous film once the bare electron surface is covered. Here we introduce a novel approach for studying electron transfer through model films and show preliminary results for the analysis of electron transfer through model composite interfacial systems integrated by electrode/SEI layer/electrolyte. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations are used to identify deposition of SEI components, and a density functional theory/Green's function approach is utilized for characterizing electron transfer. Three degrees of lithiation are modeled for the electrodes, the SEI film is composed by LiF or Li2O, and the ethylene carbonate reduction is studied. An applied potential is used as driving force for the leakage current, which is evaluated as a function of the applied potential. Comparative analyses are done for LiF and Li2O model SEI layers.

Because of the potential importance of carbon nanotubes (CNT) in renewable energy and other fields, molecular orbital ab initio calculations are used to study the relation between mechanical and electronic properties of such structures. We estimate a modulus of elasticity of 1.3 TPa and find out that the mechanism of CNT structure deformation is dependent on their chirality. Armchair and chiral nanotubes have ductile deformation fracture while zigzag have both ductile and brittle; on the other hand armchair nanotubes fracture and form two caps while chiral nanotubes adopt a helical-structure conformation. In addition, the energy gap between occupied and unoccupied molecular orbitals increases when nanotubes are under plastic deformation. This strong coupling between mechanical and electrical properties can be used to tune CNT mechanically to specific electronic bandgaps, affecting directly their electromagnetic absorption properties.

Background There is currently no anti-fibrotic drug therapy available to treat hepatitis C virus (HCV) cirrhosis. The aim of this study was to assess the safety, tolerability, and anti-fibrotic effect of PRI-724, a small-molecule modulator of Wnt signaling, in patients with HCV cirrhosis. Methods In this single-center, open-label, phase 1 trial, we sequentially enrolled patients with HCV cirrhosis who were classified as Child-Pugh (CP) class A or B. PRI-724 was administered as a continuous intravenous infusion of 10, 40, or 160 mg/m2/day for six cycles of 1 week on and 1 week off. The primary endpoints were frequency and severity of adverse events. The secondary endpoint was efficacy of PRI-724 in treating cirrhosis based on CP score and liver biopsy. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (no. NCT02195440). Findings Between Sept 3, 2014 and May 2, 2016, 14 patients were enrolled: CP class A:B, 6:8; median age, 62 (range: 43 to 74) years; male:female, 10:4. Twelve of the 14 patients completed six cycles of treatment; one was withdrawn from the study due to possible study drug-related liver injury (grade 3) in the 160 mg/m2/day dose cohort and one withdrew for personal reasons. Serious adverse events occurred in three patients [21% (3/14)], one of which was possibly related to PRI-724. The most common adverse events were nausea [29% (4/14)] and fatigue [21% (3/14)]. After PRI-724 administration, the CP scores worsened by 1 point in two patients in the 10 mg/m2/day cohort, improved in three patients at 1, 1, and 2 points in the 40 mg/m2/day cohort, and improved in one patient by 3 points in the 160 mg/m2/day cohort. The histology activity index scores of the liver tissue improved in two patients and exacerbated in two patients in the 10 mg/m2/day cohort, and improved in one patient in the 40 mg/m2/day cohort. Interpretation This study showed that administration of 10 or 40 mg/m2/day intravenous PRI-724 over 12 weeks was well-tolerated by patients with HCV cirrhosis; however, liver injury as a possible related serious adverse event was observed in the 160 mg/m2/day cohort. Funding Source AMED., Highlights • Safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, and anti-fibrotic effect of PRI-724 were assessed in patients with HCV cirrhosis. • PRI-724 was well tolerated, suggesting that the treatment is relatively safe against HCV liver cirrhosis. • Significant fibrosis reduction in hepatic lobules 12 weeks after PRI-724 treatment (40 mg/m2/day) in 3 CP class B patients. Liver cirrhosis is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in developed countries and is the 14th most common cause of death in adults worldwide. However, there is currently no anti-fibrotic drug therapy available to treat hepatitis C virus (HCV) cirrhosis. This study showed that intravenous PRI-724 at 10 or 40 mg/m2/day over 12 weeks was well-tolerated by patients with HCV cirrhosis and resulted in an improvement of liver histology and CP class in several patients.

Family beekeeping (small-scale beekeeping) is an essential activity for economic and ecological farming systems (with its contribution to pollination), which aims to bring social inclusion, fixed income, and sustainable ecological bases. This study aimed to identify the current profile of honey production in five quilombolas communities in the São Paulo Ribeira Valley (Cangume, Pilões, Piririca, Porto Velho, and Ribeirão Grande/Terra Seca), with reference to the social and environmental aspects as well as beekeeping practices. The results suggest that the social aspects of family beekeeping can be considered a second income. In these communities, however, sanitation problems, including lack of potable water resources and mining contamination, differ between communities. With the study of georeferencing, we were able to establish local environmental conditions, which served as the basis for the floristic inventory of 85 plant species distributed in 32 botanical families. The analyses of air temperature and relative humidity and honey humidity indicated that the honey was influenced by climatic conditions and the processes adopted, since the measures of pH and EC suggest a correlation with the botanical origin of honeys. Professional training in maroon communities allowed an awareness of the quality and composition of honey. Este trabalho teve como objetivo identificar o perfil atual da produção de mel de cinco comunidades quilombolas do Vale do Ribeira, São Paulo (Cangume, Pilões, Piririca, Porto Velho e, Ribeirão Grande/Terra Seca), quanto aos aspectos sociais, ambientais e das práticas de apicultura. Os resultados sugerem que nos aspectos sociais a apicultura familiar pode ser considerada uma segunda renda, que tem ainda problemas de condições sanitárias que diferem entre as comunidades, como falta de recurso de água potável e contaminação por mineração. Com o estudo de georreferenciamento, pôde-se estabelecer as condições ambientais locais que serviram de embasamento para o levantamento florístico de 85 espécies de plantas, distribuído em 32 famílias botânicas. As análises de umidade relativa e temperatura do ar e umidade do mel indicaram que os méis tiveram uma influência das condições climáticas e dos processos adotados. Já as medidas de pH e Condutividade Elétrica sugerem uma correlação com a origem botânica dos méis. A capacitação profissional nas comunidades permitiu uma sensibilização sobre a qualidade e composição do mel.

A apicultura familiar é uma atividade econômica e ecológica (devido à polinização) indispensável para sistemas de agricultura familiar que tem por finalidade trazer a inclusão social, renda fixa e bases ecológicas sustentáveis. Este trabalho teve como objetivo identificar o perfil atual da produção de mel de cinco comunidades quilombolas do Vale do Ribeira, São Paulo (Cangume, Pilões, Piririca, Porto Velho e, Ribeirão Grande/Terra Seca), quanto aos aspectos sociais, ambientais e das práticas de apicultura. Os resultados sugerem que nos aspectos sociais a apicultura familiar pode ser considerada uma segunda renda, que tem ainda problemas de condições sanitárias que diferem entre as comunidades, como falta de recurso de água potável e contaminação por mineração. Com o estudo de georreferenciamento, pôde-se estabelecer as condições ambientais locais que serviram de embasamento para o levantamento florístico de 85 espécies de plantas, distribuído em 32 famílias botânicas. As análises de umidade relativa e temperatura do ar e umidade do mel indicaram que os méis tiveram uma influência das condições climáticas e dos processos adotados. Já as medidas de pH e Condutividade Elétrica sugerem uma correlação com a origem botânica dos méis. A capacitação profissional nas comunidades permitiu uma sensibilização sobre a qualidade e composição do mel.

Tort litigation in premises liability cases has created a cottage industry for security experts. However, expertise in security issues alone is not enough to be an effective witness. An effective expert witness is one who can effectively communicate his/her opinions in a simple and concise manner that will both educate and engage the jury. Persuasive experts are able: to understand jury expectations and to deliver testimony accordingly; to keep testimony simple; to maintain credibility; and to reinforce their testimony with non-verbal communication that is consistent with the message. This paper explores these factors, and provides guidance to the security expert testifying as either a retained expert or as an employee (eg a security manager) called to testify on a particular topic.

Highly active antiretroviral therapy has been the big paradigm for transforming HIV infection in a chronic disease. However, it requires lifelong administration as the HIV provirus integrated within infected cells cannot be eliminated and virus replication resumes following antiviral discontinuation. Cumulative toxicities, incomplete immune restoration, elevated cost, drug-drug interactions and selection of drug-resistant viruses are well-known limitations of prolonged HIV medication.The first proof-of-concept that HIV infection could be cured was the Berlin patient. By blocking infection of target cells, gene therapy may allow viral clearance from carriers or prevention of infection in newly exposed individuals. Advances in the field of gene-targeting strategies, T-cell-based approaches and human stem cells are revolutionizing the field. A series of ongoing and planned trials are testing gene therapy as HIV cure. The ultimate goal is the elimination of latent viral reservoirs in HIV-infected persons and the need for lifelong antiretroviral therapy. Following a search in PubMed, we have reviewed current gene therapy strategies investigated for HIV infection as well as the latest communications on HIV eradication presented at international conferences.Multiple efforts are underway to reproduce the Berlin patient situation by engineering autologous T cells or hematopoietic stem cells resistant to HIV infection. There is no doubt that the major challenge is the elimination of latent viral reservoirs. With this goal in mind, we have entered a new era in the hope for HIV cure.
