Cardiogenic shock due to myocardial infarction or heart failure entails a reduction in end organ perfusion. Patients who cannot be stabilized with inotropes and who experience increasing circulatory failure are in need of an extracorporeal mechanical support system. Today, small, percutaneously implantable cardiac assist devices are available and might be a solution to reduce mortality and complications. Background: Various clinical trials provide evidence about the safety, effectiveness, and therapeutic success of percutaneous left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) using various occlusion devices. These devices are foreign materials implanted into the left atrium and may deteriorate left atrial (LA) function. The aim of this study was to evaluate the change in transesophageal echocardiography (TEE)-derived LA strain after LAAC. Methods and Results: The study included 95 patients (age: 75 ± 6.7 years, 67% male) who underwent percutaneous LAAC. LA strain was evaluated at three different time intervals by TEE (baseline, 45 days, and 180 days after the procedure). All data were analyzed using the software Image-Arena (TomTec®). Seventy patients had atrial fibrillation, whereas 25 were in sinus rhythm at baseline and during follow-up. Analysis was performed for peak atrial longitudinal strain (PALS) and peak atrial contraction strain (PACS) from segments of the lateral wall in mid-esophageal four-chamber view. PACS was obtained in patients with sinus rhythm during examinations. Compared to baseline, PALS increased at 45 days after the procedure (12.4% ± 8.4% at baseline vs. 16.0% ± 10.6% after 45 days, P = 0.001) and remained stable from 45 days to 180 days after procedure (13.8% ± 9.1% after 45 days vs. 17.2% ± 12.6% after 180 days, P = 0.092). Similarly, PACS increased at 45 days after the procedure (5.8% ± 3.9% at baseline vs. 10.6% ± 7.6% after 45 days, P = 0.001) and remained stable from 45 days to 180 days after the procedure (7.6% ± 4.5% after 45 days vs. 7.9% ± 3.1% after 180 days, P = 0.876).Conclusions: Our study demonstrated for the first time the improvement in TEE-derived LA strain following LAAC within 45 days of implantation. The findings suggest improved LA function following LAAC.

The dynamical structure factor is one of the experimental quantities crucial in scrutinizing the validity of the microscopic description of strongly correlated systems. However, despite its long-standing importance, it is exceedingly difficult in generic cases to numerically calculate it, ensuring that the necessary approximations involved yield a correct result. Acknowledging this practical difficulty, we discuss in what way results on the hardness of classically tracking time evolution under local Hamiltonians are precisely inherited by dynamical structure factors and, hence, offer in the same way the potential computational capabilities that dynamical quantum simulators do: We argue that practically accessible variants of the dynamical structure factors are bounded-error quantum polynomial time (BQP)-hard for general local Hamiltonians. Complementing these conceptual insights, we improve upon a novel, readily available measurement setup allowing for the determination of the dynamical structure factor in different architectures, including arrays of ultra-cold atoms, trapped ions, Rydberg atoms, and superconducting qubits. In recent years, a lot of effort has been devoted to the quest for experimental realizations of Kitaev interactions in spin systems. Recently, many materials have been synthesized which seem to realize extended Kitaev models, where Kitaev interactions are supplemented by Heisenberg and other bond dependent terms. The crystal and electronic structure of these materials renders the determination of a minimal model a nontrivial pursuit. In this work, we will concentrate on one of these particular materials, $\ensuremath{\alpha}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{Li}}_{2}{\mathrm{IrO}}_{3}$, for which various minimal models have been proposed. Employing large scale Monte Carlo simulations we show how the number of prospective models can be reduced. We study in detail six models with a different range of interactions and show how only two of those reproduce the most recent experimental results for this material. We obtain two possible minimal models, one of them with nearest neighbor interactions, while the other includes interactions up to third neighbors. Furthermore, we show that strong bond anisotropies and further neighbor interactions are crucial to stabilize the tilted counterrotating spirals found in $\ensuremath{\alpha}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{Li}}_{2}{\mathrm{IrO}}_{3}$. We further clarify the picture and distinguish these two models by studying the magnetization processes. We predict the magnetization behavior of these models and propose future experimental directions.

The Arctic Council, a collaborative forum among governments and Arctic communities, has highlighted the problem of suicide and potential solutions. The mental health initiative during the United States chairmanship, Reducing the Incidence of Suicide in Indigenous Groups: Strengths United Through Networks (RISING SUN), used a Delphi methodology complemented by face-to-face stakeholder discussions to identify outcomes to evaluate suicide prevention interventions. RISING SUN underscored that multilevel suicide prevention initiatives require mobilizing resources and enacting policies that promote the capacity for wellness, for example, by reducing adverse childhood experiences, increasing social equity, and mitigating the effects of colonization and poverty.

We develop a generalized pseudo-fermion functional renormalization group (PFFRG) approach that can be applied to arbitrary Heisenberg models with spins ranging from the quantum case $S=1/2$ to the classical limit $S\rightarrow\infty$. Within this framework, spins of magnitude $S$ are realized by implementing $M=2S$ copies of spin-1/2 degrees of freedom on each lattice site. We confirm that even without explicitly projecting onto the highest spin sector of the Hilbert space, ground states tend to select the largest possible local spin magnitude. This justifies the average treatment of the pseudo fermion constraint in previous spin-1/2 PFFRG studies. We apply this method to the antiferromagnetic $J_1$-$J_2$ honeycomb Heisenberg model with nearest neighbor $J_1>0$ and second neighbor $J_2>0$ interactions. Mapping out the phase diagram in the $J_2/J_1$-$S$ plane we find that upon increasing $S$ quantum fluctuations are rapidly decreasing. In particular, already at $S=1$ we find no indication for a magnetically disordered phase. In the limit $S\rightarrow\infty$, the known phase diagram of the classical system is exactly reproduced. More generally, we prove that for $S\rightarrow\infty$ the PFFRG approach is identical to the Luttinger-Tisza method., 14 pages, 13 figures

Under these conditions, the use of interactions with mycorrhizal fungi, could be an effective strategy for revegetation and ecological restoration. In this work, two trials in order to evaluate the performance of Fraxinus uhdei settled Lingelsh (ash) inoculated with mycorrhizal fungi (Wenz.); Pisolithus tinctorius and G. intraradices, alone or in interaction and presence / absence of nitrogen fertilization on soil type acrisol ochric. The first assay consisted of a mesocosm system using pots with substrate obtained from a severely eroded site (acrisols presence of gullies in the town of Atécuaro) with 8 treatments and 18 replicates per treatment, which lasted 20 months. The second trial with the same treatments and 28 replicates per treatment was established in the field and lasted 21 months. Fertilization was done during the rainy season, receiving 0.096 g urea / plant at a concentration of 200 millimolar. In the mesocosm system, the results indicated that fertilization had no significant effect on plant growth but negatively affected survival (67% urea without urea 90%). The highest values for the variables of growth and biomass plants always corresponded with dual inoculation and the lowest for the control plants or inoculated with P. tinctorius (height 23.3 cm to 15.8 cm for P. tinctorius, DAB 0.74 cm against 0.5 for P. tinctorius, the dry weight of the aerial parts 2.0 g to 1.0 g of control). In the field experiment, between inoculation treatments were not significant differences, however when comparing the 100% survival of the fertilized treatment with dual inoculation against control (61.54%), evidenced a clear statistically significant difference (P

To analyze the mortality trend by accidental falls in Mexico, from 1979 to 2010.We used official mortality data in México. Variables included were mortality cause, place of lesion, age, sex, year of mortality registration, size of the town of occurrence, state, occupation, workplace falls.During that period, 124,509 deaths by accidental and intentional falls were registered; of these 77.03% were men. From 1989 (3.20 per 100,000) to 2010 (1.99 per 100,000), the mortality trend was falling (β = -0.053/ 100,000, p ≤ 0.001). In the majority of states, we found a decreased between 1993-1997 and 2006 to 2010, except in Aguascalientes, Puebla, Baja California Sur, Durango and Nuevo León.This is the first study in México that showed the descending trend of mortality in accidental falls in the last two decades.

RESUMEN: Introducción. Los factores psicosociales son condiciones que afectan el bienestar y la salud de los trabajadores. Así mismo, las estrategias que éstos utilizan para sobrellevar estas condiciones y cumplir con su trabajo pudieran afectar o reducir el estrés. Objetivo. Estimar la asociación entre los factores psicosociales del trabajo académico y las estrategias de afrontamiento con el estrés percibido de profesores universitarios. Material y Métodos. Es un estudio transversal analítico realizado a 109 profesores, a los cuales se les recabó datos sociodemográficos y laborales, y se les aplicó dos instrumentos. Resultados. La reestructuración cognitiva es un factor de riesgo para el estrés (OR 10.72, IC95% 1.34-85.88), afectado por la evitación de problemas. Un factor que reduce el estrés es la resolución de problemas (OR 0.086, IC95% 0.02-0.51). Discusión. Los factores psicosociales del trabajo académico no están asociados al estrés y las estrategias de afrontamiento no aseguran la disminución de esta situación.
