Abstract

Human-induced salinization increasingly threatens inland waters; yet we know little about the multifaceted response of lake communities to salt contamination. By conducting a coordinated mesocosm experiment of lake salinization across 16 sites in North America and Europe, we quantified the response of zooplankton abundance and (taxonomic and functional) community structure to a broad gradient of environmentally relevant chloride concentrations, ranging from 4 to ca. 1400 mg Cl− L−1. We found that crustaceans were distinctly more sensitive to elevated chloride than rotifers; yet, rotifers did not show compensatory abundance increases in response to crustacean declines. For crustaceans, our among-site comparisons indicate: (1) highly consistent decreases in abundance and taxon richness with salinity; (2) widespread chloride sensitivity across major taxonomic groups (Cladocera, Cyclopoida, and Calanoida); and (3) weaker loss of functional than taxonomic diversity. Overall, our study demonstrates that aggregate properties of zooplankton communities can be adversely affected at chloride concentrations relevant to anthropogenic salinization in lakes.

Abstract

Human-induced salinization caused by the use of road deicing salts, agricultural practices, mining operations, and climate change is a major threat to the biodiversity and functioning of freshwater ecosystems. Yet, it is unclear if freshwater ecosystems are protected from salinization by current water quality guidelines. Leveraging an experimental network of land-based and in-lake mesocosms across North America and Europe, we tested how salinization-indicated as elevated chloride (Cl-) concentration-will affect lake food webs and if two of the lowest Cl- thresholds found globally are sufficient to protect these food webs. Our results indicated that salinization will cause substantial zooplankton mortality at the lowest Cl- thresholds established in Canada (120 mg Cl-/L) and the United States (230 mg Cl-/L) and throughout Europe where Cl- thresholds are generally higher. For instance, at 73% of our study sites, Cl- concentrations that caused a ≥50% reduction in cladoceran abundance were at or below Cl- thresholds in Canada, in the United States, and throughout Europe. Similar trends occurred for copepod and rotifer zooplankton. The loss of zooplankton triggered a cascading effect causing an increase in phytoplankton biomass at 47% of study sites. Such changes in lake food webs could alter nutrient cycling and water clarity and trigger declines in fish production. Current Cl- thresholds across North America and Europe clearly do not adequately protect lake food webs. Water quality guidelines should be developed where they do not exist, and there is an urgent need to reassess existing guidelines to protect lake ecosystems from human-induced salinization.

Abstract

We compared stable isotopes of water in plant stem (xylem) water and soil collected over a complete growing season from five well-known long-term study sites in northern/cold regions. These spanned a decreasing temperature gradient from Bruntland Burn (Scotland), Dorset (Canadian Shield), Dry Creek (USA), Krycklan (Sweden), to Wolf Creek (northern Canada). Xylem water was isotopically depleted compared to soil waters, most notably for deuterium. The degree to which potential soil water sources could explain the isotopic composition of xylem water was assessed quantitatively using overlapping polygons to enclose respective data sets when plotted in dual isotope space. At most sites isotopes in xylem water from angiosperms showed a strong overlap with soil water; this was not the case for gymnosperms. In most cases, xylem water composition on a given sampling day could be better explained if soil water composition was considered over longer antecedent periods spanning many months. Xylem water at most sites was usually most dissimilar to soil water in drier summer months, although sites differed in the sequence of change. Open questions remain on why a significant proportion of isotopically depleted water in plant xylem cannot be explained by soil water sources, particularly for gymnosperms. It is recommended that future research focuses on the potential for fractionation to affect water uptake at the soil-root interface, both through effects of exchange between the vapour and liquid phases of soil water and the effects of mycorrhizal interactions. Additionally, in cold regions, evaporation and diffusion of xylem water in winter may be an important process.

Abstract

The seasonal behavior of fluvial dissolved silica (DSi) concentrations, termed DSi regime, mediates the timing of DSi delivery to downstream waters and thus governs river biogeochemical function and aquatic community condition. Previous work identified five distinct DSi regimes across rivers spanning the Northern Hemisphere, with many rivers exhibiting multiple DSi regimes over time. Several potential drivers of DSi regime behavior have been identified at small scales, including climate, land cover, and lithology, and yet the large‐scale spatiotemporal controls on DSi regimes have not been identified. We evaluate the role of environmental variables on the behavior of DSi regimes in nearly 200 rivers across the Northern Hemisphere using random forest models. Our models aim to elucidate the controls that give rise to (a) average DSi regime behavior, (b) interannual variability in DSi regime behavior (i.e., Annual DSi regime), and (c) controls on DSi regime shape (i.e., minimum and maximum DSi concentrations). Average DSi regime behavior across the period of record was classified accurately 59% of the time, whereas Annual DSi regime behavior was classified accurately 80% of the time. Climate and primary productivity variables were important in predicting Average DSi regime behavior, whereas climate and hydrologic variables were important in predicting Annual DSi regime behavior. Median nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations were important drivers of minimum and maximum DSi concentrations, indicating that these macronutrients may be important for seasonal DSi drawdown and rebound. Our findings demonstrate that fluctuations in climate, hydrology, and nutrient availability of rivers shape the temporal availability of fluvial DSi. Plain Language Summary: The amount of dissolved silicon (DSi) in rivers is an important control on numerous ecological and biogeochemical processes, such as types of algae that bloom and rates of carbon sequestration. Compared to our knowledge of other nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, we have limited understanding of what controls the timing and concentration of DSi in rivers. Previous work identified five distinct seasonal patterns of DSi concentrations in rivers across the Northern Hemisphere; here we look at the environmental variables that control these seasonal patterns. We found that rivers often have one to five seasonal patterns over time due to interannual shifts in temperature, evapotranspiration, and streamflow. In addition, we found that the average shape of the seasonal pattern for a given river, specifically minimum and maximum DSi concentrations, was related to nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations, highlighting linkages between N, P, and DSi cycling in rivers. This work identifies why river DSi concentrations exhibit both within and between year variability, highlighting that temperature, streamflow, and nutrient availability control the timing of river DSi availability for biological uptake. Currently, process understanding of global decomposition patterns and the drivers of such patterns are hampered by the lack of coherent large-scale datasets. We buried 36,000 individual litterbags (tea bags) worldwide and found an overall negative correlation between initial mass-loss rates and stabilization factors of plant-derived carbon, using the Tea Bag Index (TBI). The stabilization factor quantifies the degree to which easy-to-degrade components accumulate during early-stage decomposition (e.g. by environmental limitations). However, agriculture and an interaction between moisture and temperature led to a decoupling between initial mass-loss rates and stabilization, notably in colder locations. Using TBI improved mass-loss estimates of natural litter compared to models that ignored stabilization. Ignoring the transformation of dead plant material to more recalcitrant substances during early-stage decomposition, and the environmental control of this transformation, could overestimate carbon losses during early decomposition in carbon cycle models.

Abstract

Dikning av våtmark i svenska skogsområden under de senaste 120 åren har bidragit till ökad skogsproduktion men också orsakat genomgripande förändringar i skogar­nas omsättning och lagring av vatten. Med tiden ansamlas sediment och vegetation i dikena, och dikesrensning kan behövas för att upprätthålla en hög skogsproduk­tion. Åtgärden kan dock påverka markegenskaper och -processer, vattenkvalitet och kolbalans. Ökad avrinning av total-kvicksilver (THg) och biotillgängligt metylkvick­silver (MeHg) har pekats ut som en potentiell risk vid dikesrensning. En alternativ åtgärd för dikade områden är restaurering till mer naturliga våtmarksförhållanden. Från politiskt håll uppmuntras restaurering som en åtgärd mot översvämningar och torka, för att minska emission av växthusgaser och för att öka den biologiska mång­falden. Åtgärden, som i regel blötlägger torv, riskerar dock att öka den mikrobiella bildningen av MeHg. Mer ytliga flödesvägar i restaurerade våtmarker riskerar också att mobilisera kvicksilver (Hg) från markens övre lager. I ett experimentellt fältförsök med sex avrinningsområden och tre referensområden studerades effekter på THg och MeHg i dikesvatten, efter både dikesrens­ning och våtmarksrestaurering, upp till ca två år efter åtgärderna. Fältförsöket kompletterades med provtagning av THg och MeHg i rensade (n = 25; 1–4 år efter rensning) och orensade (n = 25) diken i en rumslig studie med en stor geografisk spridning. Dessutom utvärderades 15 sedimentationsdammar belägna nedströms dikesrensade områden med avseende på bildning av MeHg i dammarna. Slutligen i en litteraturstudie sammanställdes effekter av dikesrensning på skogsproduktion med syftet att väga dessa effekter mot effekter på THg och MeHg i vatten. 41. Does peatland rewetting mitigate extreme rainfall events?

Abstract

Pristine peatlands are believed to play an important role in regulating hydrological extremes because they can act as reservoirs for rainwater and release it gradually during dry periods. Therefore, rewetting of drained peatlands is considered an important strategy to reduce the catastrophic effects of flooding. With the anticipation of more frequent extreme rainfall events due to a changing global climate, the importance of peatland rewetting in flood mitigation becomes even more important. To date, empirical data showing that rewetting actually restores the hydrological function of drained peatlands is largely lacking, particularly in Sweden. To assess whether rewetting peatlands can mitigate extreme rainfall events and ensure water security in a future climate, we measured event-based runoff responses before and after rewetting using a BACI approach (before-after and control-impact) within a replicated, catchment scale study at the Trollberget Experimental Area in northern Sweden. High-resolution hydrological field observations, including groundwater table level, discharge, and rainfall data were collected over four years, allowing us to detect and analyze 17 rainfall-runoff events before and 30 events after rewetting. Our rainfall-runoff analysis revealed that rewetting significantly decreased peak flow, runoff coefficient, and reduced the overall flashiness of hydrographs, making the rewetted site function more like the pristine control peatland. However, "lag time" which was already similar to pristine conditions was pushed farther away from pristine conditions following rewetting. We found that the rewetted site experienced an increase in the groundwater table level following rewetting and this was consistently observed across all distances from the blocked ditch within the peatland, providing complementary data for our event-based analysis. In summary, our findings suggest that peatland rewetting has the potential to mitigate flood responses, however, further research over a longer time period is needed as peat properties and the peatland vegetation will develop and change over time. Abstract

Fluvial silicon (Si) plays a critical role in controlling primary production, water quality, and carbon sequestration through supporting freshwater and marine diatom communities. Geological, biogeochemical, and hydrological processes, as well as climate and land use, dictate the amount of Si exported by streams. Understanding Si regimes—the seasonal patterns of Si concentrations—can help identify processes driving Si export. We analyzed Si concentrations from over 200 stream sites across the Northern Hemisphere to establish distinct Si regimes and evaluated how often sites moved among regimes over their period of record. We observed five distinct regimes across diverse stream sites, with nearly 60% of sites exhibiting multiple regime types over time. Our results indicate greater spatial and interannual variability in Si seasonality than previously recognized and highlight the need to characterize the watershed and climate variables that affect Si cycling across diverse ecosystems. 50. Can Low-Resolution Airborne Laser Scanning Data Be Used to Model Stream Rating Curves?

Abstract

This pilot study explores the potential of using low-resolution (0.2 points/m2) airborne laser scanning (ALS)-derived elevation data to model stream rating curves. Rating curves, which allow the functional translation of stream water depth into discharge, making them integral to water resource monitoring efforts, were modeled using a physics-based approach that captures basic geometric measurements to establish flow resistance due to implicit channel roughness. We tested synthetically thinned high-resolution (more than 2 points/m2) ALS data as a proxy for low-resolution data at a point density equivalent to that obtained within most national-scale ALS strategies. Our results show that the errors incurred due to the effect of low-resolution versus high-resolution ALS data were less than those due to flow measurement and empirical rating curve fitting uncertainties. As such, although there likely are scale and technical limitations to consider, it is theoretically possible to generate rating curves in a river network from ALS data of the resolution anticipated within national-scale ALS schemes (at least for rivers with relatively simple geometries). This is promising, since generating rating curves from ALS scans would greatly enhance our ability to monitor streamflow by simplifying the overall effort required.
