1. Complete characterization of graphs with local total antimagic chromatic number 3

Abstract

A total labeling of a graph $G = (V, E)$ is said to be local total antimagic if it is a bijection $f: V\cup E \to\{1,\ldots ,|V|+|E|\}$ such that adjacent vertices, adjacent edges, and incident vertex and edge have distinct induced weights where the induced weight of a vertex $v$, $w_f(v) = \sum f(e)$ with $e$ ranging over all the edges incident to $v$, and the induced weight of an edge $uv$ is $w_f(uv) = f(u) + f(v)$. The local total antimagic chromatic number of $G$, denoted by $\chi_{lt}(G)$, is the minimum number of distinct induced vertex and edge weights over all local total antimagic labelings of $G$. In this paper, we first obtained general lower and upper bounds for $\chi_{lt}(G)$ and sufficient conditions to construct a graph $H$ with $k$ pendant edges and $\chi_{lt}(H) \in\{\Delta(H)+1, k+1\}$. We then completely characterized graphs $G$ with $\chi_{lt}(G)=3$. Many families of (disconnected) graphs $H$ with $k$ pendant edges and $\chi_{lt}(H) \in\{\Delta(H)+1, k+1\}$ are also obtained., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures. Abstract

Let $G=(V, E)$ be a connected graph. A bijection $f: E\to \{1, \ldots, |E|\}$ is called a local antimagic labeling if for any two adjacent vertices $x$ and $y$, $f^+(x)\neq f^+(y)$, where $f^+(x)=\sum_{e\in E(x)}f(e)$ and $E(x)$ is the set of edges incident to $x$. Thus a local antimagic labeling induces a proper vertex coloring of $G$, where the vertex $x$ is assigned the color $f^+(x)$. The local antimagic chromatic number $\chi_{la}(G)$ is the minimum number of colors taken over all colorings induced by local antimagic labelings of $G$. In this paper, we present some families of bridge graphs with $\chi_{la}(G)=3$ and give several ways to construct bridge graphs with $\chi_{la}(G)=3$.

A total of 191 participants were implanted with toric IOL (1.25, 2.00, or 2.75D) or non-toric IOL (control). The lowest range of corneal astigmatic eyes were randomized to 1.25D toric or control. Higher astigmatic powers were allocated to the treatment arm. Subjects were assessed immediately postoperatively, 1– 2 (V1), 7– 14 (V2), 30– 60 (V3) and 120– 180 (V4) days postoperatively. Unaided (UDVA) and distance corrected visual acuity (CDVA), manifest refraction and corneal curvature were assessed. Vector analysis was used to calculate surgically induced refractive correction (SIRC), correction ratio (CR), error magnitude (EM) and error vector (EV). Slit-lamp photography was used to measure centration and rotational stability.Results: UDVA was better in the low toric IOL group in comparison with the control group at V4 (p< 0.001). There was an undercorrection in the control group, whereas the average CR for all toric subjects was 1.00 ± 0.32: V2, 0.98 ± 0.34: V3 and 0.98 ± 0.35: V4. The absolute IOL rotational stability in comparison to the position of the IOL at V1 was 1.35° ± 0.97°: V2, 1.35° ± 1.07°: V3 and 1.38° ± 1.25°: V4. Decentration was generally inferior (V1: 0.04 ± 0.22mm, V2: 0.05± 0.20mm, V3: 0.08 ± 0.22mm, V4: 0.04 ± 0.21mm) and nasal (V1: 0.19 ± 0.23mm, V2: 0.20 ± 0.20mm, V3: 0.20 ± 0.21mm, V4: 0.17 ± 0.22mm).Conclusion: Participants with low levels of corneal astigmatism achieved superior vision and refractive outcomes in the low toric group over the control. Moderate and high levels of astigmatism achieved excellent refractive outcomes. 11. The magnetic properties of the Garnet and glass forms of Mn3Al2Si3O12

Abstract

The magnetic susceptibilities and specific heats of the crystalline garnet and glass forms of Mn3Al2Si3O12 are reported. This allows a direct comparison of the degree of magnetic frustration of the triangle-based garnet lattice and the structurally disordered solid at the same composition for isotropic spin 5/2 Mn^2+ (3d^5). The results show that the glass phase shows more pronounced signs of magnetic frustration than the crystalline phase. Through comparison of the specific heats of Ca3Al2Si3O12 (grossular) and Mn3Al2Si3O12 (spessartine) garnets, information is provided concerning the anomalous extra specific heat in the latter material.

Abstract

Ni2SiO4, Liebenbergite, is an example of a quasi-one-dimensional magnet made up of frustrated corner sharing triangles of Ni2+ (S = 1) ions that propagate parallel to the b axis. Ni2SiO4 is isostructural with olivine, a common mineral of varying composition Fe2-xMgxSiO4, and is described in the orthorhombic space group Pnma. A synthetic polycrystalline sample of Ni2SiO4 was studied using constant wavelength powder neutron diffraction. Diffraction spectra were collected above and below the antiferromagnetic ordering transition (TN ~ 34 K) and were used to refine the atomic and magnetic structures of Ni2SiO4. Corepresentational theory was used to determine the symmetry-allowed magnetic structures after the Neel transition and the refned magnetic structure evidences both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic inter-chain interactions, and ferromagnetic intra-chain coupling. Abstract

We have studied the thermodynamics of the stuffed spin ice material, Dy2(DyxTi2-x)O7-x/2, in which additional Dy3+ replace Ti4+ in the pyrochlore Dy2Ti2O7. Heat capacity measurements indicate that these materials lose the spin ice zero point entropy for x >= 0.3, sharply contrasting with results on the analogous Ho materials. A finite ac susceptibility is observed as T ~ 0 in both the Ho and Dy materials with x = 0.67, which suggests that spin fluctuations persist down to T ~ 0. We propose that both the entropy and susceptibility data may be explained as a result of domains of local pyrochlore type structural order in these materials., Comment: Accepted to Phys. Rev. B

Abstract

Water ice and spin ice are important model systems in which theory can directly account for zero point entropy associated with quenched configurational disorder. Spin ice differs from water ice in the important respect that its fundamental constituents, the spins of the magnetic ions, can be removed through replacement with non-magnetic ions while keeping the lattice structure intact. In order to investigate the interplay of frustrated interactions and quenched disorder, we have performed systematic heat capacity measurements on spin ice materials which have been thus diluted up to 90%. Investigations of both Ho and Dy spin ices reveal that the zero point entropy depends non-monotonically on dilution and approaches the value of Rln2 in the limit of high dilution. Abstract

We report a structural and thermodynamic study of the "stuffed spin ice" material Ho2TiO5 (i.e., Ho2(Ti1.33Ho0.67)O6.67), comparing samples synthesized through two different routes. Neutron powder diffraction and electron diffraction reveal that the previously reported defect fluorite phase has short-range pyrochlore ordering, in that there are domains in which the Ho and Ho/Ti sublattices are distinct. By contrast, a sample prepared through a floating zone method has long range ordering of these sublattices. Despite the differences in crystal structures, the two versions of Ho2TiO5 display similar magnetic susceptibilities. Field dependent magnetization and measured recovered entropies, however, show a difference between the two forms, suggesting that the magnetic properties of the stuffed pyrochlores depend on the local structure., Comment: submitted to Phys. Abstract

Synthesis and crystal structures are described for the compounds Ln2(Ti2-xLnx)O7-x/2, where Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, and x ranges from 0 to 0.67. Rietveld refinements on X-ray powder diffraction data indicate that in Tb and Dy titanate pyrochlores, extra Ln3+ cations mix mainly on the Ti4+ site with little disorder on the original Ln3+ site. For the smaller rare earths (Ho-Lu), stuffing additional lanthanide ions results in a pyrochlore to defect fluorite transition, where the Ln3+ and Ti4+ ions become completely randomized at the maximum (x=0.67). In all of these Ln-Ti-O pyrochlores, the addition of magnetic Ln3+ in place of nonmagnetic Ti4+ adds edge sharing tetrahedral spin interactions to a normally corner sharing tetrahedral network of spins. Abstract

The third law of thermodynamics dictates that the entropy of a system in thermal equilibrium goes to zero as its temperature approaches absolute zero. In ice, however, a "zero point" or residual entropy can be measured - attributable to a high degeneracy in the energetically preferred positions of the hydrogen ions associated with the so-called "ice rules".1,2 Remarkably, the spins in certain magnetic materials with the pyrochlore structure of corner-sharing tetrahedra, called "spin ice", have an equivalent degeneracy of energetically preferred states and also have been shown to display a zero point entropy.3,4,5,6,7 Here we report that we have chemically altered Ho2Ti2O7 spin ice by stuffing extra Ho magnetic moments into normally non-magnetic Ti sites surrounding the Ho tetrahedra. The resulting series, Ho2(Ti2-xHox)O7-x/2, provides a unique opportunity to study the effects of increased connectivity between spins on a frustrated lattice. Surprisingly, the measured zero point entropy per spin appears unchanged by these excess spins, and the dynamic freezing of the spins is suppressed to lower temperatures. Abstract

We report measurements of the ac susceptibility of the cooperative paramagnet Tb2Ti2O7 in a strong magnetic field. Our data show the expected saturation maximum in chi(T) and also an unexpected low frequency dependence (< 1 Hz) of this peak, suggesting very slow spin relaxations are occurring. Measurements on samples diluted with nonmagnetic Y3+ or Lu3+ and complementary measurements on pure and diluted Dy2Ti2O7 strongly suggest that the relaxation is associated with dipolar spin correlations, representing unusual cooperative behavior in a paramagnetic system., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

We report the magnetic properties of the ZnLn2S4 (Ln = Er, Tm, Yb) olivines, in which the magnetic lanthanide ions are in a potentially frustrated geometry consisting of sawtooth chains of corner-sharing triangles. Fits to the high temperature magnetic susceptibility yielded Curie-Weiss temperatures of theta ~ -4, -13, and -75 K for the Er, Tm, and Yb compounds respectively. Abstract

We have characterized the magnetic and structural properties of the CdLn2Se4 (Ln = Dy, Ho), and CdLn2S4 (Ln = Ho, Er, Tm, Yb) spinels. We observe all compounds to be normal spinels, possessing a geometrically frustrated sublattice of lanthanide atoms with no observable structural disorder. Fits to the high temperature magnetic susceptibilities indicate these materials to have effective antiferromagnetic interactions, with Curie-Weiss temperatures theta ~ -10 K, except CdYb2S4 for which theta ~ -40 K. Abstract

The layered sodium cobalt oxyhydrate superconductor Na0.3CoO2*1.4H2O is shown through X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric studies to be one of a series of hydrated phases of Na0.3CoO2. Further, it is shown that the material is exceptionally sensitive to both temperature and humidity near ambient conditions, easily dehydrating to a non-superconducting lower hydrate. The observation of this stable lower hydrate with c=13.8 angstroms implies that the superconductivity turns on in this system between CoO2 layer spacings of 6.9 and 9.9 angstroms at nominally constant chemical doping., Comment: 10 pages and 4 figures

Abstract

In the first part of this series, we delve into the foundational aspects of “Message in a Bottle (MIAB)” (henceforth referred to as MIAB). This study builds upon the legacy of the Voyager Golden Records, launched aboard Voyager 1 and 2 in 1977, which aimed to communicate with intelligent species beyond our world. These records not only offer a snapshot of Earth and human civilization but also represent our desire to establish contact with advanced alien civilizations. Given the absence of mutually understood signs, symbols, and semiotic conventions, MIAB, like its predecessor, uses scientific methods to design an innovative means of communication that encapsulates the story of humanity. Our goal is to share our collective knowledge, emotions, innovations, and aspirations in a way that provides a universal, yet contextually relevant, understanding of human society, the evolution of life on Earth, and our hopes and concerns for the future. Through this time and space traveling capsule, we also strive to inspire and unify current and future generations to celebrate and safeguard our shared human experience.

Abstract

Background: Skills such as planning and problem solving that are required in self‐determination can be cognitively demanding. It has not yet been examined whether executive functions and intelligence are associated with levels of self‐determination in individuals with intellectual disability (ID), and how that is related to quality of life (QoL). This study examined the associations among executive functions, intelligence, self‐determination, and QoL in adolescents with ID. Methods: Seventy‐nine adolescents aged between 17 and 20 years with mild ID participated in the study. Executive functions were assessed by experimental tasks. Non‐verbal IQ and survey data regarding QoL and self‐determination capacity were collected from the participants. Results: In a regression model with QoL as the dependent variable, only executive planning and self‐determination capacity (but not working memory, inhibition and IQ) were significant predictors of QoL. Two mediation models were tested based on the hypotheses, literature and current findings. Model 1 revealed that executive planning had a negative direct effect on QoL when the mediator, self‐determination capacity, was held constant. Model 2 indicated that the significant association between self‐determination and QoL was not mediated by executive planning. Conclusions: The findings highlighted the crucial significance of self‐determination, in comparison with executive functions and intelligence, for improving the QoL in adolescents with ID. Importantly, higher executive planning skill was even associated with lower QoL if self‐determination was not concurrently strengthened. We define a total k-labeling φ of a graph G as a combination of an edge labeling φe:E(G)→{1,2,...,ke} and a vertex labeling φv:V(G)→{0,2,...,2kv}, such that φ(x)=φv(x) if x&#V(G) and φ(x)=φe(x) if x∈E(G), where k= max {ke,2kv}. The total k-labeling φ is called an edge irregular reflexive k-labeling of G if every two different edges has distinct edge weights, where the edge weight is defined as the summation of the edge label itself and its two vertex labels. Thus, the smallest value of k for which the graph G has the edge irregular reflexive k-labeling is called the reflexive edge strength of G. In this paper, we study the edge irregular reflexive labeling of corona product of two paths and corona product of a path with isolated vertices. 41. Edge Irregular Reflexive Labeling for Some Classes of Plane Graphs

Abstract

For a graph G, we define a total k-labeling ϕ as a combination of an edge labeling ϕe(x) → {1, 2, . . . , ke} and a vertex labeling ϕv(x) → {0, 2, . . . , 2kv}, such that ϕ(x) = ϕv(x) if x ∈ V (G) and ϕ(x) = ϕe(x) if x ∈ E(G), where k = max {ke, 2kv}. The total k-labeling ϕ is called an edge irregular reflexive k-labeling of G, if for every two edges xy, x0y0of G, one has wt(xy) 6=wt(x0y0), where wt(xy) = ϕv(x) + ϕe(xy) + ϕv(y). The smallest value of k for which such labeling exists is called a reflexive edge strength of G. In this paper, we study the edge irregular reflexive labeling on plane graphs and determine its reflexive edge strength.

Abstract

An edge labeling of a connected graph G=(V,E) is said to be local antimagic if it is a bijection f:E→{1,...,|E|} such that for any pair of adjacent vertices x and y, f+(x)≠f+(y), where the induced vertex label f+(x)=∑f(e), with e ranging over all the edges incident to x. The local antimagic chromatic number of G, denoted by χla(G), is the minimum number of distinct induced vertex labels over all local antimagic labelings of G. In this paper, several sufficient conditions for χla(H)≤χla(G) are obtained, where H is obtained from G with a certain edge deleted or added. Abstract

Background The burden of bronchiectasis is disproportionately high in Aboriginal adults, with early mortality. Bronchiectasis precursors, that is, protracted bacterial bronchitis (PBB) and chronic suppurative lung disease (CSLD), often commence in early childhood. We previously reported a 10% prevalence of PBB in Aboriginal children aged 0 to 7 years, however there are no data on prevalence of chronic lung diseases in older children. Our study aimed to determine the prevalence of PBB, CSLD, bronchiectasis, and asthma in Aboriginal children living in four communities. Methods A whole-population cross-sectional community co-designed study of Aboriginal children aged <18-years in four remote communities in Western Australia across two-time points, a month apart. Children were assessed by pediatric respiratory clinicians with spirometry undertaken (when possible) between March–September 2021. Children with respiratory symptoms were followed up via medical record audit from either the local medical clinic or via a respiratory specialist clinic through to March 2022 to establish a final diagnosis. Findings We recruited 392 (91.6%) of those in the selected communities; median age = 8.4 years (interquartile range [IQR] 5.1–11.5). Seventy children (17.9%) had a chronic respiratory pathology or abnormal spirometry results. PBB was confirmed in 30 (7.7%), CSLD = 13 (3.3%), bronchiectasis = 5 (1.3%) and asthma = 17 (4.3%). The prevalence of chronic wet cough significantly increased with increasing age. Interpretation The prevalence of PBB, CSLD and bronchiectasis is high in Aboriginal children and chronic wet cough increases with age. This study highlights the high disease burden in Aboriginal children and the urgent need for strategies to address these conditions.
