Abstract

A high-field side (HFS) scrape-off layer (SOL) reflectometer has been designed and installed on the DIII-D tokamak. The reflectometer measures the HFS SOL density profile with high spatial and temporal resolution, and was installed in support of the upcoming HFS lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) experiment on DIII-D. SOL conditions local to the LHCD launcher are known to play an important role in the wave coupling from the antenna into the plasma core. The HFS SOL reflectometer will help inform LHCD operation and study the parasitic LH-SOL interactions that can affect current drive efficiency. The reflectometer operates in the O-Mode polarization in the 6-27 GHz range, corresponding to a measured 1D density profile at the HFS mid-plane from 4 × 1017 − 9 × 1018 m−3 with frequency sweep times between 20 μs - 200 μs and radial resolution on the order of a few millimeters.
