Research Findings: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the relationship between the home environment and the development of English as a second/foreign language for young Asian children. A systematic search of relevant databases generated 22 eligible studies published between 2001 and 2020 (N[subscript total] = 3,953 children; M[subscript age] = 2.7-6 years), of which 12 (N[subscript total] = 2,164 children; M[subscript age] = 2.7-6 years) were subject to meta-analyses. The results indicated that various home factors (e.g., family demographics, home literacy activities, language use, and parents' beliefs and motivations) were positively associated with young Asian children's English language abilities, literacy skills, phonological awareness, and interest in learning English. The roles of particular home environmental factors in children's English development may vary across different aspects of English development. The influences of family structure, home language use, and literacy environment tended to vary across sociocultural contexts and ethnic groups. Moreover, specific child- and home-related characteristics moderated and/or mediated the relationships between several home environmental factors and children's cognitive-linguistic abilities. Practice or Policy: The findings of this study highlight the significance of the home environment in the development of English as a second/foreign language for young children in Asia. These findings have important practical and policy implications regarding the design and implementation of culturally appropriate family-based English interventions in Asian contexts.

Shyness, which is characterized by social withdrawal behaviours and approaching-withdrawal conflicted social motivations, is suggested to influence children's social-emotional development. This study examined the association between shyness and social-emotional development among Chinese children aged 3 to 12. A systematic search of both Chinese and international databases for relevant research between 1990 and 2020 yielded 23 studies (n = 9,009 children), which were systematically reviewed. Among them, 15 studies (n = 6,303 children) were included in the meta-analyses. Results from random-effects models indicated that shyness was positively associated with internalizing problems (r=0.21, p<0.01), externalizing problems (r=0.14, p<0.01), peer victimization (r=0.23, p<0.05), and asocial behaviours (r=0.47,p<0.05), and negatively associated with peer preference (r=-0.19, p<0.01) and school social competence (for school-aged children r=-0.19, p<0.01; for preschool children r=-0.22, p<0.01) in the Chinese context. Further, analyses revealed that the relationship between shyness and social-emotional development was moderated by children's characteristics (e.g., gender, age, receptive vocabulary, and emotional competence), social relationship (e.g., teacher-child relationship and parent-child attachment), and situational context (e.g., interpersonal similarity). This study suggests that shyness generally exerts negative influences on Chinese children's social-emotional development, but the influences are unique to particular social-emotional domains and moderated by both children's characteristics and environmental factors.

This study examined associations among preschool attendance, home learning activities, stunting status, and early child development using data from the validation study of the East Asia-Pacific Early Child Development Scales (EAP-ECDS). Participants were children aged 3 to 5 years from Cambodia (n = 1178; 30% stunted), Mongolia (n = 1226; 11% stunted), Papua New Guinea (n = 1697; 50% stunted), and Vanuatu (n = 674; 44% stunted). Child development was directly assessed using the EAP-ECDS and children's preschool experiences and home learning activities were reported by parents. Preschool attendance, preschool duration, and home learning activities were positively related to child development for non-stunted and stunted children, demonstrating that stimulating interactions in the home environment and early childhood education serve as modifiable factors that can help to reduce the negative effects of stunting on children's cognitive and non-cognitive development, and highlighting the importance of "nurturing care" for the development of both non-stunted and stunted children.

Research Findings: This study evaluated the impact of Chinese literacy interventions on Chinese language learning of South Asian children and their mothers in Hong Kong. A total of 44 children and eight of their mothers participated in Chinese literacy interventions that consisted of two approaches -- Copying and Morphological Awareness Training (CMAT) and Integrative Perceptual Approach (IPA). Children in the intervention group who underwent four weeks of CMAT followed by four weeks of IPA were compared to a control group of 29 children who only attended regular Chinese classes in their preschools. After controlling for non-verbal intelligence, ANCOVA analyses revealed that the intervention group did significantly better than the control group at posttest in (i) morphological awareness, word reading and writing when taught using CMAT; and (ii) word reading when taught using IPA. Mothers made gains on most Chinese literacy measures and children whose mothers participated in the intervention had higher gains in mean scores relative to their pretest scores on most measures than those whose mothers did not, suggesting the effectiveness of combined child and parent interventions. Practice or Policy: Findings support the development of evidence-based interventions to cater to the language learning needs of SA children and parents.

This paper provides an overview of English language education policies and practices in Hong Kong. It examines changes and developments in policymaking and implementation across the education system. Based on a qualitative analysis of government documents and empirical studies, this review utilizes a sociocultural framework in characterizing language policy decision making processes and implementation strategies in colonial and post-colonial Hong Kong. Findings revealed a multilayered context within which English language education policies and practices are enacted, highlighting the interplay among political, social, economic and educational agendas in policy formulation and implementation. The incongruence between policy recommendations and actual classroom practices, as well as the relationship between government responsiveness and public preferences suggested the power and agency of multiple stakeholders (e.g. parents, teachers and community members) in the interpretation and appropriation of language education policies. This review provides additional insights to understanding the status of English against the backdrop of changing local conditions and to identifying forces of continuity and change in the development of language education policies and practices in Hong Kong. Implications for practice, policy and research are discussed.

Research Findings: This study investigated the relationship between family socioeconomic status (SES) and children's early attainment, and the roles of preschool attendance and executive function (EF) in this association. Participants were 3,331 children (1,584 girls) ranging in age from 36 to 71 months from Cambodia, Mongolia, and Vanuatu. Children's language, literacy, and mathematics attainment and EF were assessed using the East Asia-Pacific Early Child Development Scales. Mothers reported on family demographics and children's preschool experience. Results indicated significant associations between SES and academic attainment in all three countries. Further analysis showed that preschool attendance and EF were significant mediators of SES- related disparities in attainment, but differed by country. Both served as parallel and sequential mediators in the associations between SES and performance in language, literacy, and mathematics in Mongolia. However, only preschool attendance mediated the association of SES with literacy attainment in Cambodia, and only EF mediated that with children's mathematics and language performance in Vanuatu. Although SES is substantially related with early achievement in these developing countries, our findings indicate that preschool attendance and EF may attenuate this relationship. Practice or Policy: Implications for the provision of early childhood education programs and public policy are discussed.

Research Findings: The present study examined the relation between socioeconomic status (SES) and Chinese children's development of English as a second language in Hong Kong, and whether the home literacy environment (HLE) was an important mediator. Participants were 237 children (110 girls, Mage = 47.38 months, SDage = 3.66) and one of their caregivers. Children were assessed on phonological awareness, receptive vocabulary, expressive vocabulary, and letter knowledge. Information on HLE (i.e. shared reading, extratextual talk, direct teaching, play and media-based activities, and literacy resources) was obtained via a caregiver questionnaire. Findings revealed significant SES differences in all aspects of HLE, as well as in children's English receptive vocabulary, expressive vocabulary, and letter knowledge. HLE was differentially related to children's English skills, suggesting the mediating effect of HLE in the relation between SES and Chinese children's English skills. Practice or Policy: Findings from this study highlight the features of HLE that can best support children's second language development. Vocabulary instruction during English language learning was observed for one week in six classrooms (three K2 classes for four-year olds and three K3 classes for five-year olds) from three kindergartens in two districts of Hong Kong. From 23 sessions of observations and 535 minutes of data, field notes were coded to identify instances of vocabulary instruction and the strategies used to teach words. Participating teachers were also interviewed about their educational and professional backgrounds, as well as their beliefs and practices in English language teaching. Planned vocabulary instruction occurred in the context of storybook read aloud and theme-based learning. Words were also briefly taught during phonics instruction, which was pervasive and used to facilitate the learning of letter sounds. Teachers acknowledged the importance of oral language in the teaching and learning of English and their reported beliefs reflected their observed pedagogical practices. However, teachers mainly used strategies that enhanced the recognition and memorisation of words and, rarely, the understanding and application of words.

This paper presents a review of the literature on the perspectives on school readiness and the transition to school process of children, parents, kindergarten- and primary teachers in Mainland China. In addition, the ways in which parents and teachers support child transitions from kindergarten to primary school are examined. Forty-seven publications from three English databases and one Chinese database were included. On measures of cognitive and socio-emotional development, urban children were reported to outperform their rural counterparts, and girls outperformed boys. Compared with children of ethnic minority backgrounds, Han children demonstrated higher levels of cognitive and socio-emotional development than their peers. Children with special educational needs scored lower than typically developing children on assessments of school readiness. Kindergarten and primary teachers acknowledged the importance of socio-emotional development and approaches to learning, but differed on expectations relating to academic achievement and behavior. Family socioeconomic status (SES) and the extent to which parents prioritized academic skills were associated with parents' beliefs, practices, and children's school readiness. Authoritative parenting contributed to children's socio-emotional, cognitive and language development on measures of school readiness. Research implications and future directions regarding the perceptions and practices involved in children's transition to school are proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Hong Kong Early Child Development Scale (HKECDS) is a tool for assessing holistic early child development in preschoolers aged from three to six years. The original version of the scale, HKECDS, was updated in 2019 (HKECDS-2) to reflect the contemporary context and local curricular expectations. Children (n = 144) from three kindergartens in Hong Kong completed the HKECDS-2 in individual sessions. Rasch model analysis and expert discussions resulted in a short version of the scale (HKECDS-3) with 50 items in nine domains. The domains are Personal and self-care (4 items), Language development (7 items), Pre-academic learning (10 items), Cognitive development (6 items), Gross motor (4 items), Fine motor (2 items), Health and safety (5 items), Moral development (6 items), and Society and environment (6 items). There were significant correlations between findings from the updated version of the tool, HKECDS-3 and the HKECDS-2 (long form), and older children had significantly higher scores than younger children.
