Previous studies found that while gendered intergroup threat was a correlate of conspiracy beliefs about gender equality, manipulating intergroup threat did not affect endorsement of conspiracy theories. This suggests that an alternative causal mechanism may underlie this relationship. It is possible that exposure to conspiracy theories instead increases threat receptivity, as it makes participants aware of a previously hidden existential threat (van Prooijen et al., 2020). As such, the proposed research aims to test the reverse pathway: that exposure to conspiracy theories about gender equality initiatives increases intergroup threat. This will also test the effect of exposure to conspiracy theories about gender equality on attitudes towards gender equality initiatives, and will investigate the potential moderating/mediating roles of zero-sum thinking about gender equality and male collective narcissism.

Among EU countries, Romania tends to fare poorly when it comes to LGBT+ inclusion. For example, a recent survey (FRA, 2020) shows that 45% of Romanian LGBT+ respondents felt discriminated against in at least one area of life in the year before the survey. Similarly, 43% experienced harassment due to being LGBT+, a rate that ranks second among all EU countries. Much of this discrimination and harassment happens in schools for young people, with 44% of LGBT+ students (15-17 years old) in Romania saying they were hiding being LGBT+ at school, a rate that is 3 to 4 times higher than in countries like Luxembourg (11%) or Netherlands (16%), or Malta (17%). Such high rates of LGBT+ discrimination amongst Romanian students are especially concerning, given that younger sexual minority individuals are most vulnerable to the negative effects of stigma on their mental and physical health (Fedewa & Ahn, 2011). Together, these findings indicate a strong need to implement effective interventions to reduce LGBT+ stigma and bias among Romanian teachers. A recent meta-analysis (Bartos, Berger, & Hegarty, 2014) showed that interventions can be moderately successful in reducing sexual prejudice, resulting in change ranging from one third to one half of a standard deviation in size. A more careful analysis reveals that most intervention studies have been conducted on undergraduate students in Western countries and none in Eastern Europe or other countries with strong anti-gay attitudes. Although more recent research has started to test interventions in other countries such as Jamaica (West, 2018) or Brazil (Costa et al., 2016), no such adaptation exists in Romania (or Eastern Europe), particularly for teachers. The primary goal of this research line is to design and test an intervention that is innovatively geared towards Romanian teachers. We plan to achieve this goal by deliberately taking into account specific cultural and institutional characteristics, rather than indiscriminately applying previous intervention strategies

- Abstract
The current research project was commissioned by the Northern Ireland Department of Finance in May 2021. Three general goals were agreed:1) To carry out research on the performance of the Gender Recognition Act 2004 in this jurisdiction2) To assess the available policy options: 1. No change – retaining the Gender Recognition Act 2004, 2. Self-declaratory system 3. Mixed system 4. Retaining the current age limit of 18 or lowering it. We additionally assess the potential impact of those options on the wider community relevant stakeholders3) To make evidence-based recommendations for future policy in this area.To address these goals, we proposed and agreed on a mixed-method approach, using multiple levels of analysis. Data was synthesised from different, but complementary sources, in order to gain a multifaceted perspective on the current topic, including reviews and analyses of policy and scientific literature, as well as primary quantitative and qualitative sources. This mixed-methods approach combines key stakeholder views, interpretations and responses, and synthesises other recent research literature and findings. As such, this approach provides:• Insights to understand attitudes towards potential reform of the Gender Recognition Act 2004. These insights may inform future consultations and government decisions on policy options regarding gender recognition• An in-depth, comparative interpretation of experiences in relation to gender recognition and official gender recognition processes in Northern Ireland• Identification of current controversies in the area of gender recognition, as well as an understanding of the benefits and possible sources of resistance to policies, to reflect people’s reactions to particular proposal for policy change.

17. Gender Differences, Smiling, and Economic Negotiation Outcomes

- Abstract
Research documents gender differences in nonverbal behavior and negotiation outcomes. Women tend to smile more often than men and men generally perform better in economic negotiation contexts. Among nonverbal behaviors, smiling can serve various social functions, from rewarding or appeasing others to conveying dominance, and could therefore be extremely useful in economic negotiations. However, smiling has hardly been studied in negotiation contexts. Here we examine links between smiling, gender, and negotiation outcomes. We analyze a corpus of video recordings of participant dyads during mock salary negotiations and test whether women smile more than men and if the amount of smiling can predict economic negotiation outcomes. Consistent with existing literature, women smiled more than men. There was no significant relationship between smiling and negotiation outcomes and gender did not predict negotiation performance. Exploratory analyses showed that expected negotiation outcomes, strongly correlated with actual outcomes, tended to be higher for men than for women. Implications for the gender pay gap and future research are discussed.

- Abstract
Social role theory posits that binary gender gaps in agency and communion should be larger in lessegalitarian countries, reflecting these countries’ more pronounced sex-based power divisions. Conversely, evolutionary and self-construal theorists suggest that gender gaps in agency and communion should be larger in moreegalitarian countries, reflecting the greater autonomy support and flexible self-construction processes present in these countries. Using data from 62 countries (N= 28,640), we examine binary gender gaps in agentic and communal self-views as a function of country-level objective gender equality (the Global Gender Gap Index) and subjective distributions of social power (the Power Distance Index). Findings show that in more egalitarian countries, gender gaps in agency are smaller and gender gaps in communality are larger. These patterns are driven primarily by cross-country differences in men’s self-views and by the Power Distance Index (PDI) more robustly than the Global Gender Gap Index (GGGI). We consider possible causes and implications of these findings.

19. What We 'Say' and What We 'Think' about Female Managers: Explicit versus Implicit Associations of Women with Success

- Abstract
In two studies, we investigated implicit gender stereotypes of successful managers. Using an adaptation of the Implicit Association Test (IAT) named the Successful Manager IAT (SM-IAT) in Study 1, we found that male participants were more likely to implicitly associate men with successful manager traits and women with unsuccessful manager traits compared to reversed pairings. Women, individuals high in internal motivation to respond without sexism, and those low in external motivation to respond without sexism showed positive implicit associations between women and successful manager traits. In contrast, all participants showed positive views of women on workplace-contextualized explicit measures of gender stereotypes. The findings of Study 2 also revealed that implicit gender stereotypes predicted hypothetical workplace outcomes, such that a greater implicit association of men with successful manager traits, and women with unsuccessful manager traits, was linked to increased workplace rewards assigned to male managers by both male and female participants. The findings of our studies have important implications for both gender stereotyping researchers and workplace practitioners. Theoretically, our studies suggest that explicit and implicit stereotypes of female managers diverge, with implicit stereotypes being more likely to highlight traditional, often negative, views of female managers. Our findings point toward a better understanding of female managers' challenges in the workplace. (Contains 1 note and 3 tables.)

- Abstract
Social role theory posits that binary gender gaps in agency and communion should be larger in less egalitarian countries, reflecting these countries’ more pronounced sex-based power divisions. Conversely, evolutionary and self-construal theorists suggest that gender gaps in agency and communion should be larger in more egalitarian countries, reflecting the greater autonomy support and flexible self-construction processes present in these countries. Using data from 62 countries (N = 28,640), we examine binary gender gaps in agentic and communal self-views as a function of country-level objective gender equality (the Global Gender Gap Index) and subjective distributions of social power (the Power Distance Index).

- Abstract
Precarious manhood beliefs portray manhood, relative to womanhood, as a social status that is hard to earn, easy to lose, and proven via public action. Here, we present cross-cultural data on a brief measure of precarious manhood beliefs (the Precarious Manhood Beliefs scale [PMB]) that covaries meaningfully with other cross-culturally validated gender ideologies and with country-level indices of gender equality and human development. Using data from university samples in 62 countries across 13 world regions (N = 33,417), we demonstrate: (1) the psychometric isomorphism of the PMB (i.e., its comparability in meaning and statistical properties across the individual and country levels); (2) the PMB's distinctness from, and associations with, ambivalent sexism and ambivalence toward men; and (3) associations of the PMB with nation-level gender equality and human development. Findings are discussed in terms of their statistical and theoretical implications for understanding widely-held beliefs about the precariousness of the male gender role.

GENDER inequality ,ATTITUDE (Psychology) ,MOTIVATION (Psychology) ,LEADERSHIP - Abstract
A number of high-profile gender equality initiatives (GEIs) are intended to address women's underrepresentation in science. However, attitudes toward such initiatives can be negative. In two experiments with STEM academics, we examined how GEIs can be best framed to improve attitudes toward them. In study 1 (N = 113), we manipulated the framing of GEI leadership (led by a man or woman) and GEI focus (benefitting men and women or benefitting women only). The men were more supportive of GEIs benefitting both men and women because of fewer concerns of unfair treatment and more internal motivations to engage with GEIs. The women's level of support was unaffected by framing. In study 2 (N = 151), we framed GEIs as either supported by university management or not and either internally or externally driven. Support was greater for internally driven GEIs. The impact of management support depended on the academics' experience with GEIs. This research makes evidence-based recommendations for the implementation of GEIs to improve their effectiveness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Women express more emotion than men, but do they also experience more emotion than men? Are emotions represented differently in men and women’s brains? What are the origins of gender differences in emotions – are we born different or is it socialization that renders us different? What are the implications of gender differences in emotion for general well-being, insomnia, depression, antisocial behavior, and alexithymia? What are the most appropriate methodologies for the empirical study of gender differences in emotional experiences? In the current book, coordinated by The Swiss Center for Affective Sciences, these questions are answered by reviewing research on general emotional expression and experience, but also on specific emotions and affective experiences such as shame, empathy, and impulsivity. We propose an interdisciplinary contribution to the field of gender and emotions, with works authored by specialists in the fields of psychology, neuroscience, psychiatry, economics, philosophy, and anthropology.
