During the 2018 field campaign (by INP, AOROC) at the archaeological site of Dougga (Africa Proconsularis) under the joint direction of Samir Aounallah and Véronique Brouquier-Reddé, the discovery of a new block of the meta prima of the circus has clarified the dating of the building and has led to a considerable revision of the restoration of the text that was inscribed on the two metae at the ends of the spina. These new elements lead to a re-evaluation of the function of the magistrates who dedicated the monument and, above all, raise questions about the structure of the dedication to the imperial family, which had contributed to the prior historiographical significance of the text.

- Abstract
The 'Samaritan sarcophagi' are a cohesive group of stone coffins with unique characteristics from the 2nd-3rd centuries CE. Due to their unique form, non-figurative decorations, their distribution that corresponds to the area of Samaritan settlement, and several inscriptions of Samaritan names engraved on them, Rachel Barkay previously proposed attributing the production and use of this group of coffins to the Samaritan population as an ethnic indicator. In contrast, Yitzhak Magen suggested that the entire population of Samaria used this group of sarcophagi; therefore they have no cultural-material feature unique to the Samaritan population, and their presence at a site does not necessarily indicate the existence of a Samaritan population. In this paper I reexamine this question while analyzing several findings that cast doubt on Barkay's proposal and may support Magen's opinion, including the archaeological context in which Samaritan sarcophagi were discovered in the cemetery of the city of Sebastia, a Samaritan sarcophagus with a Latin inscription, and a coffin of this type found in the village of Jifna, outside the boundaries of the Samaritan settlement. 4. Water rights for tombs in eleven inscriptions from Rome.

- Abstract
Roman epitaphs occasionally mention the water supply for the tomb and the legal arrangements securing that water, as illustrated in eleven Latin inscriptions from in and around Rome. In these inscriptions, Romans use legal language to secure water rights and to express their aspirations and expectations for a lasting identity. Analysis of these legal expressions reveals the nature of water rights for tombs and their relationship to both the ius civile and to religious law. But the legal language was often imprecise, so that the epitaphs operated in the so-called "shadow of the law," where the law shaped the choices of Roman tomb founders and in turn, these individuals made law server their social practice and beliefs. INSCRIPTIONS , *RABBIS , *JEWISH communities , *JEWISH way of life , *RELIGIOUS life - Abstract
By examining the Latin inscription of Rabbi Iacob of Mérida (Lusitania, Spain) on the basis of historical and philological arguments we can establish its dating to the early eighth century, after the Arab invasion. This would confirm the survival of sages who had a leading role in the religious life of Jewish or formerly converted Jewish communities able to clandestinely maintain and preserve their ancestral beliefs. RebbiIacob, the son of the rebbiSenior is mentioned in the inscription; it is possible that both were "masters of the Law." It is likely that they chose to practice their teachings orally due to the ban on the production and reading of all kinds of Jewish written works in the Visigothic kingdom. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present article is a study of two linen fabrics that have an inscription in cursive Latin of very high interest. Both tissues are preserved in the Biblical and Oriental Museum of Leon and have an uncertain origin. The two pieces, which are decontextualized, have the same measure, 17 cm wide and 34 cm high. The text is Christian but has certain gaps. It is a repeated invocation to Jesus, who presents Him as the Beginning and the End of all, and qualifies Him repeatedly as Holy. These attributes are proper to God (Apocalypse 1,4; 1,8; 4,8), and being assigned to Jesus, seem to deny the human nature of Christ, which makes us think of a text of heretical character with a clear relationship with Monarchianism or Sabellianism (II-III centuries AD). Sabellianism spread through Libya and Egypt from the third century onwards, which can approximate the text dating between the third and fifth centuries. A technical analysis of both the linen and the ink in which papyrus remains have been found entangled, was performed, indicating that it comes from a workshop in which linen or papyrus was made indistinctly, something that was common in the workshops of Egyptian craftsmen. A textual analysis was also performed enhancing the links with some passages of Apocalypse.

A small inscribed statuette base, found in Pincum (Veliko Gradište), and belonging to the antiquities collector Imre Pongrácz, was rediscovered recently in the deposits of the Banat Museum. This fact put in a new light all that we have known so far about this object, which was thought to be lost. The inscription is dedicated to Dulcenus, a form of the name of the deity Iuppiter Dolichenus, by two standard-bearers of the legio VII Claudia. In the upper part of the stone can be seen traces of the four hooves of an ox and the central quadrangular support by which the animal’s body was sustained. The ex voto can be determined chronologically, by the style of the letters and the form of the message, to the 3rd century AD.

The study of dedication inscriptions on monumental arches shows that they are placed in the middle of a twin dialogue: on one side, the statues and figures on the arch, on the other, the urban space. Interactions are thus created both within the monument itself and between the monument and its location. This study also draws attention to the controlled use of a specific vocabulary adapted to both the architectural aspect and the political use of monumental arches.

- Abstract
A new Latin inscription from Cástulo (Jaén), in the Roman province of Baetica, is published. It had been wrongly considered an Iberian inscription. The inscription provides a new occurrence of the feminine personal name Auitina and an additional instance of the development of a phonetic glide in the noun puuella., Se publica una nueva inscripción latina procedente de Cástulo (Jaén), en la provincia de la Bética, que había sido considerada erróneamente una inscripción ibérica.

J.-C. Since 2017, the Tunisian-French team has been examining the northern periphery of Dougga (Thugga) and in particular the megalithic and Roman north-western funerary area on the cliff top and the sanctuary of Baal Hammon – Saturn, at a lower level to the north-east. Several discrete aspects are presented. The architecture of a newly identified turriform mausoleum and one of the circular drum tombs (bazinas) testify to a high Hellenistic cultural level of the society and the Numidian craftsmen. The material recovered from the bazina’s chambers provides a wealth of new data on the culture associated with these structures and on collective burial practices involving children and adults. A typology is presented of the pre-Roman ceramics of the entire necropolis, dated between the late 4th century BC and the 1st century BC, as well as results of petrographic analysis. The funerary area continued to be used until the second or third quarter of the 3rd century AD, and the examination of a set of inscribed stelae, mensae and cremations in pots permits, for the first time at Dougga, comparison of anthropological data with epitaphs. Finally, the multidisciplinary study of some votive stelae and cinerary vessels discovered in situ in the sacred area of Baal Hammon – Saturn is also a first for this site and it challenges ancient identifications and confirms perinatal human cremations, along with ovicaprine and food offerings until AD 80.

Manuscripts with texts of Tarantine inscriptions date back to the 15th and 17th centuries and contain transcriptions by foreign and local scholars. The oldest manu- script containing Tarentine inscriptions is the Marucellian Code A 79 1, followed by the Vat. lat. 6039, 5237, 5241. In particular, the Vat. lat. 5241 preserves a trace of A. Paglia’s research on the impulse of Aldo Manuzio the Younger. However, also local scholars dealt with Latin inscriptions in their works: among these we note Giovanni Giovine and Ambrogio Merodio. Merodio’s transcriptions were inadvertently used by Mommsen, through the work of the Abbot Pacichelli. Most of the few inscriptions reproduced in the manuscript tradition (eight epitaphs and two honorary dedications) are now lost and were originally found in churches where they had been reused as spolia.

The goal of this paper is to offer a lecture of an unpublished Latin inscription carved on a bronze nail that is currently kept at The Hunt Museum, Limerick (Ireland). The allegedly incomprehensible text and its medium had been previously related to a Modern Age masonic and/or drinking context. However, we propose to read the inscription as a 4th-5th century A. D. protective text against envious people, which was written in Vulgar Latin and engraved on a magical nail from the Roman province of Africa., El propósito del presente trabajo es dar a conocer un epígrafe latino desconocido hasta la fecha.

A small inscribed statuette base, found in Pincum (Veliko Gradiste), and belonging to the antiquities collector Imre Pongr?cz, was rediscovered recently in the deposits of the Banat Museum. This fact put in a new light all that we have known so far about this object, which was thought to be lost. The inscription is dedicated to Dulcenus, a form of the name of the deity Iuppiter Dolichenus, by two standard-bearers of the legio VII Claudia. In the upper part of the stone can be seen traces of the four hooves of an ox and the central quadrangular support by which the animal?s body was sustained. The ex voto can be determined chronologically, by the style of the letters and the form of the message, to the 3rd century AD.

Sabellianism ,Monarchianism ,Linen fabric ,Biblical and Oriental Museum of León ,Latin inscription - Abstract

Marko., A fragment of a limestone stele was found in Baška near the base of the wall of an old stone house (Kružna St 29). The inscription reads: - - - For]/tunatạ[e - - - paren]/tibus pii[ssimis - - -]/ Q(uinto) Arrio [- - -]/frat(ri) po[sterisque - - -]/suis [- - -. It is dated to the first half of the 2nd century AD. The monument might have come from the Roman necropolis at the nearby St. Mark site in Baška.
