1. Exploring a novel Einstein--Rosen BTZ wormhole

Abstract

We introduce a novel Einstein-Rosen BTZ wormhole metric as a solution to the Einstein field equations with a negative cosmological constant and explore in detail its various phenomenological aspects. We show that the wormhole metric is characterized by a horizon at the throat, resembling a black hole horizon. This implies that our wormhole metric describes a one-way traversable wormhole at the throat, with Hawking radiation observed by an observer located at some distance from the wormhole. It is also found the same Hawking temperature using the BTZ-like coordinates and Kruskal-like coordinates. This temperature is invariant not only on the type of coordinates but also the nature of the spin of quantum fields. Importantly, we find that at the wormhole throat, the spacetime is not a pure vacuum solution, but rather contains an exotic string matter source with negative tension, which may stabilize the wormhole geometry. To this end, we found that the size of the wormhole throat is proportional to the number of quantum bits suggesting a possible implications on ER=EPR. Further we studied the particle dynamics and, finally, we tested the ANEC with a test scalar and vector fields. For the double null-component computed in BTZ coordinates, we found an apparent divergence at the wormhole throat, which is then shown to be regularized by means of Kruskal-like coordinates. Abstract

This research investigates the classification of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) information within textual disclosures. The aim is to develop and evaluate binary classification models capable of accurately identifying and categorizing E, S and G-related content respectively. The motivation for this research stems from the growing importance of ESG considerations in investment decisions and corporate accountability. Accurate and efficient classification of ESG information is crucial for stakeholders to understand the impact of companies on sustainability and to make informed decisions. The research uses a quantitative approach involving data collection, data preprocessing, and the development of ESG-focused Large Language Models (LLMs) and traditional machine learning (Support Vector Machines, XGBoost) classifiers. Performance evaluation guides iterative refinement until satisfactory metrics are achieved. The research compares traditional machine learning techniques (Support Vector Machines, XGBoost), state-of-the-art language model (FinBERT-ESG) and fine-tuned LLMs like Llama 2, by employing standard Natural Language Processing performance metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score. A novel fine-tuning method, Qlora, is applied to LLMs, resulting in significant performance improvements across all ESG domains. The research also develops domain-specific fine-tuned models, such as EnvLlama 2-Qlora, SocLlama 2-Qlora, and GovLlama 2-Qlora, which demonstrate impressive results in ESG text classification., Comment: 56 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Rib fractures are one of the most common traumatic injuries and may result in significant morbidity and mortality. Despite growing evidence, technological advances and increasing acceptance, surgical stabilization of rib fractures (SSRF) remains not uniformly considered in trauma centers. Indications, contraindications, appropriate timing, surgical approaches and utilized implants are part of an ongoing debate. The present position paper, which is endorsed by the World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES), and supported by the Chest Wall Injury Society, aims to provide a review of the literature investigating the use of SSRF in rib fracture management to develop graded position statements, providing an updated guide and reference for SSRF. METHODS: This position paper was developed according to the WSES methodology. A steering committee performed the literature review and drafted the position paper. An international panel of experts then critically revised the manuscript and discussed it in detail, to develop a consensus on the position statements. RESULTS: A total of 287 studies (systematic reviews, randomized clinical trial, prospective and retrospective comparative studies, case series, original articles) have been selected from an initial pool of 9928 studies. Thirty-nine graded position statements were put forward to address eight crucial aspects of SSRF: surgical indications, contraindications, optimal timing of surgery, preoperative imaging evaluation, rib fracture sites for surgical fixation, management of concurrent thoracic injuries, surgical approach, stabilization methods and material selection. CONCLUSION: This consensus document addresses the key focus questions on surgical treatment of rib fractures. The expert recommendations clarify current evidences on SSRF indications, timing, operative planning, approaches and techniques, with the aim to guide clinicians in optimizing the management of rib fractures, to improve patient outcomes and direct future research.

Abstract

This paper presents a fast and cost-effective method for diagnosing cardiac abnormalities with high accuracy and reliability using low-cost systems in clinics. The primary limitation of automatic diagnosing of cardiac diseases is the rarity of correct and acceptable labeled samples, which can be expensive to prepare. To address this issue, two methods are proposed in this work. The first method is a unique Multi-Branch Deep Convolutional Neural Network (MBDCN) architecture inspired by human auditory processing, specifically designed to optimize feature extraction by employing various sizes of convolutional filters and audio signal power spectrum as input. In the second method, called as Long short-term memory-Convolutional Neural (LSCN) model, Additionally, the network architecture includes Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network blocks to improve feature extraction in the time domain. The innovative approach of combining multiple parallel branches consisting of the one-dimensional convolutional layers along with LSTM blocks helps in achieving superior results in audio signal processing tasks. The experimental results demonstrate superiority of the proposed methods over the state-of-the-art techniques. The overall classification accuracy of heart sounds with the LSCN network is more than 96%. The efficiency of this network is significant compared to common feature extraction methods such as Mel Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) and wavelet transform. Therefore, the proposed method shows promising results in the automatic analysis of heart sounds and has potential applications in the diagnosis and early detection of cardiovascular diseases., Comment: 22 pages

Abstract

We propose a tensor network framework for approximating the evolution of observables of measure-preserving ergodic systems. Our approach is based on a spectrally-convergent approximation of the skew-adjoint Koopman generator by a diagonalizable, skew-adjoint operator $W_\tau$ that acts on a reproducing kernel Hilbert space $\mathcal H_\tau$ with coalgebra structure and Banach algebra structure under the pointwise product of functions. Leveraging this structure, we lift the unitary evolution operators $e^{t W_\tau}$ (which can be thought of as regularized Koopman operators) to a unitary evolution group on the Fock space $F(\mathcal H_\tau)$ generated by $\mathcal H_\tau$ that acts multiplicatively with respect to the tensor product. Our scheme also employs a representation of classical observables ($L^\infty$ functions of the state) by quantum observables (self-adjoint operators) acting on the Fock space, and a representation of probability densities in $L^1$ by quantum states. Combining these constructions leads to an approximation of the Koopman evolution of observables that is representable as evaluation of a tree tensor network built on a tensor product subspace $\mathcal H_\tau^{\otimes n} \subset F(\mathcal H_\tau)$ of arbitrarily high grading $n \in \mathbb N$. A key feature of this quantum-inspired approximation is that it captures information from a tensor product space of dimension $(2d+1)^n$, generated from a collection of $2d + 1$ eigenfunctions of $W_\tau$. Furthermore, the approximation is positivity preserving. Abstract

This work is an analytical investigation of the evolution of surface water waves in Miles and Jeffreys theories of wind wave interaction in water of finite depth. The present review is divided into two major parts. The first corresponds to the surface water waves in a linear regime and its nonlinear extensions. In this part, Miles theory of wave amplification by wind is extended to the case of finite depth. The dispersion relation provides a wave growth rate depending on depth. Our theoretical results are in good agreement with the data from the Australian Shallow Water Experiment and the data from the Lake George experiment. In the second part of this study, Jeffreys theory of wave amplification by wind is extended to the case of finite depth, where the Serre-Green-Naghdi is derived. We find the solitary wave solution of the system, with an increasing amplitude under the action of the wind. This continuous increase in amplitude leads to the soliton breaking and blow-up of the surface wave in finite time. The theoretical blow-up time is calculated based on actual experimental data. By applying an appropriate perturbation method, the SGN equation yields Korteweg de Vries Burger equation (KdVB). We show that the continuous transfer of energy from wind to water results in the growth of the KdVB soliton amplitude, velocity, acceleration, and energy over time while its effective wavelength decreases. This phenomenon differs from the classical results of Jeffreys approach due to finite depth. Again, blow-up and breaking occur in finite time. These times are calculated and expressed for soliton- and wind-appropriate parameters and values. These values are measurable in usual experimental facilities. The kinematics of the breaking is studied, and a detailed analysis of the breaking time is conducted using various criteria. Finally, some integrability perspectives are presented.

Abstract

In this work, a supervised machine learning (ML) multi-output regression approach is investigated to build predictive models for an industrial unit of phosphoric acid production. More specifically, multioutput data-driven regression is applied to simultaneously estimate nine outputs (Reactor temperature, chemical yield (RC), P2O5 concentration in the phosphoric acid, and chemical losses in gypsum) under different operating conditions. The presented methods are linear regression and decision tree regression models. The use of decision tree regression provides high accuracy compared to linear regression. The decision tree model leads to a high value of the coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.994, on the testing set not used for the modeling), and to low values of the mean squared error (MSE) and mean absolute error (MAE). The best parameters of the decision tree provide higher fitness values than other depth levels. The optimal values in the training stage are 0.002, 0.007, and 0.994 for MSE, MAE, and R2, respectively. Applying decision tree regression can correctly model the data of the phosphoric acid manufacturing unit with satisfying fitness criterion and important conclusions on the process coherent with phenomenological models, as well as supplementary and novel insights.

Abstract

Accurately predicting the electronic energy deposition of ions in materials is an important challenge in both fundamental and applied research. While employing ab initio simulations to investigate electronic stopping of ions in matter holds promise, its combined use with experimental measurements paves the way for obtaining reliable data. In this paper, we present a collaborative study using real-time time-dependent density functional theory and experimental methods to determine the electronic stopping power of hydrogen and helium ions in tungsten, a primary candidate material for future nuclear fusion devices. While calculated stopping powers in hyperchanneling trajectories are significantly lower than the experimental data, off-center and random geometries demonstrate a better agreement. We show that the deviation from velocity proportionality for both projectiles traversing the hyperchanneling directions can be explained through the existence of a threshold velocity leading to the activation of semicore states. Additionally, we analyse the pseudopotential and the trajectory dependence of computed electronic energy losses. It is demonstrated that the role of including inner-shell electrons varies depending on the velocity range. While these states play a crucial role at high projectile velocities by introducing additional dissipation channels, their impact diminishes in the low-velocity range. Finally, we introduce a simple expression that links electronic energy losses in different trajectories to local electron density, and we show that utilizing this formula allows for quite accurate predictions of stopping powers around the Bragg peak.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The trauma mortality rate is higher in the elderly compared with younger patients. Ageing is associated with physiological changes in multiple systems and correlated with frailty. Frailty is a risk factor for mortality in elderly trauma patients. We aim to provide evidence-based guidelines for the management of geriatric trauma patients to improve it and reduce futile procedures. METHODS: Six working groups of expert acute care and trauma surgeons reviewed extensively the literature according to the topic and the PICO question assigned. Statements and recommendations were assessed according to the GRADE methodology and approved by a consensus of experts in the field at the 10th international congress of the WSES in 2023. RESULTS: The management of elderly trauma patients requires knowledge of ageing physiology, a focused triage, including drug history, frailty assessment, nutritional status, and early activation of trauma protocol to improve outcomes. Acute trauma pain in the elderly has to be managed in a multimodal analgesic approach, to avoid side effects of opioid use. Antibiotic prophylaxis is recommended in penetrating (abdominal, thoracic) trauma, in severely burned and in open fractures elderly patients to decrease septic complications. Antibiotics are not recommended in blunt trauma in the absence of signs of sepsis and septic shock. Venous thromboembolism prophylaxis with LMWH or UFH should be administrated as soon as possible in high and moderate-risk elderly trauma patients according to the renal function, weight of the patient and bleeding risk. A palliative care team should be involved as soon as possible to discuss the end of life in a multidisciplinary approach considering the patients directives, family feelings and representatives desires, and all decisions should be shared. CONCLUSIONS: The management of elderly trauma patients requires knowledge of ageing physiology, a focused triage based on assessing frailty and early activation of trauma protocol to improve outcomes. Geriatric Intensive Care Units are needed to care for elderly and frail trauma patients in a multidisciplinary approach to decrease mortality and improve outcomes.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopy is widely adopted across nearly all surgical subspecialties in the elective setting. Initially finding indication in minor abdominal emergencies, it has gradually become the standard approach in the majority of elective general surgery procedures. Despite many technological advances and increasing acceptance, the laparoscopic approach remains underutilized in emergency general surgery and in abdominal trauma. Emergency laparotomy continues to carry a high morbidity and mortality. In recent years, there has been a growing interest from emergency and trauma surgeons in adopting minimally invasive surgery approaches in the acute surgical setting. The present position paper, supported by the World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES), aims to provide a review of the literature to reach a consensus on the indications and benefits of a laparoscopic-first approach in patients requiring emergency abdominal surgery for general surgery emergencies or abdominal trauma. METHODS: This position paper was developed according to the WSES methodology. A steering committee performed the literature review and drafted the position paper. An international panel of 54 experts then critically revised the manuscript and discussed it in detail, to develop a consensus on a position statement. RESULTS: A total of 323 studies (systematic review and meta-analysis, randomized clinical trial, retrospective comparative cohort studies, case series) have been selected from an initial pool of 7409 studies. Evidence demonstrates several benefits of the laparoscopic approach in stable patients undergoing emergency abdominal surgery for general surgical emergencies or abdominal trauma. The selection of a stable patient seems to be of paramount importance for a safe adoption of a laparoscopic approach. In hemodynamically stable patients, the laparoscopic approach was found to be safe, feasible and effective as a therapeutic tool or helpful to identify further management steps and needs, resulting in improved outcomes, regardless of conversion. Appropriate patient selection, surgeon experience and rigorous minimally invasive surgical training, remain crucial factors to increase the adoption of laparoscopy in emergency general surgery and abdominal trauma. CONCLUSIONS: The WSES expert panel suggests laparoscopy as the first approach for stable patients undergoing emergency abdominal surgery for general surgery emergencies and abdominal trauma.

Abstract

Abstract Background Improper expression of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) can cause various cancers. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) affect the expression and function of several key lncRNAs. We assessed the associations of MEG3, PVT1, and H19 lncRNA polymorphisms with susceptibility to gastric cancer (GC). Methods In Ardabil (a high-risk area in North‒West Iran), 795 blood samples were collected from 396 cases and 399 controls. The control subjects were randomly selected from individuals receiving regular physical examinations in this hospital with no self-reported cancer history and were frequency-matched to the case group by sex and 5-year age intervals. All the samples were genotyped via the Infinium HTS platform, which was subsequently followed by rigorous data quality control, as well as statistical and bioinformatic analyses. Results The H19 rs2107425 SNP was associated with GC risk in a recessive model of inheritance (TT vs. CC + CT: OR = 1.87). The PVT1 rs13255292 variant in the overdominant model significantly reduced GC risk (CT vs. CC + TT: OR = 0.74). Abstract

Abstract We introduce a novel Einstein–Rosen BTZ wormhole metric as a solution to the Einstein field equations with a negative cosmological constant and explore in detail its various phenomenological aspects. We show that the wormhole metric is characterized by a horizon at the throat, resembling a black hole horizon. This implies that our wormhole metric describes a one-way traversable wormhole at the throat, with Hawking radiation observed by an observer located at some distance from the wormhole. It is also found the same Hawking temperature using the BTZ-like coordinates and Kruskal-like coordinates. This temperature is invariant not only on the type of coordinates but also the nature of the spin of quantum fields. Importantly, we find that at the wormhole throat, the spacetime is not a pure vacuum solution, but rather contains an exotic string matter source with negative tension, which may stabilize the wormhole geometry. To this end, we found that the size of the wormhole throat is proportional to the number of quantum bits suggesting a possible implications on ER=EPR. Further we studied the particle dynamics and, finally, we tested the ANEC with a test scalar and vector fields. For the double null-component computed in BTZ coordinates, we found an apparent divergence at the wormhole throat, which is then shown to be regularized by means of Kruskal-like coordinates. The ANEC for such a scalar/vector field is violated at the wormhole throat.

Abstract

Laparotomy incisions provide easy and rapid access to the peritoneal cavity in case of emergency surgery. Incisional hernia (IH) is a late manifestation of the failure of abdominal wall closure and represents frequent complication of any abdominal incision: IHs can cause pain and discomfort to the patients but also clinical serious sequelae like bowel obstruction, incarceration, strangulation, and necessity of reoperation. Previous guidelines and indications in the literature consider elective settings and evidence about laparotomy closure in emergency settings is lacking. This paper aims to present the World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES) project called ECLAPTE (Effective Closure of LAParoTomy in Emergency): the final manuscript includes guidelines on the closure of emergency laparotomy.

Abstract

In this paper, we have tried to clearly explain the meaning of fractions and operations with fractions. Also, we have tried to illustrate with some examples how to apply the rules of operations with fractional numbers, giving different practical techniques through different figures, visualization methods, and concretizing problems. The paper presents with examples of the most common mistakes made by students, giving suggestions for their avoidance, as well as through a questionnaire, which considered the survey of 60 students of grade 6 of school, "Elena Gjika" City Prishtina, Kosovo, with the help of the statistical test we have concluded that practical techniques such as figures, visualizations, and video lessons have a close dependence on the meaning and operation of fractions.

Abstract

A \emph{sparsification} of a given graph $G$ is a sparser graph (typically a subgraph) which aims to approximate or preserve some property of $G$. Examples of sparsifications include but are not limited to spanning trees, Steiner trees, spanners, emulators, and distance preservers. Each vertex has the same priority in all of these problems. However, real-world graphs typically assign different ``priorities'' or ``levels'' to different vertices, in which higher-priority vertices require higher-quality connectivity between them. Multi-priority variants of the Steiner tree problem have been studied in prior literature but this generalization is much less studied for other sparsification problems. In this paper, we define a generalized multi-priority problem and present a rounding-up approach that can be used for a variety of graph sparsifications. Our analysis provides a systematic way to compute approximate solutions to multi-priority variants of a wide range of graph sparsification problems given access to a single-priority subroutine.
