Language comprehension requires semantic processing of individual words and their context within a sentence. Well-characterized event-related potential (ERP) components (the N400 and late positivity component (LPC/P600)) provide neuromarkers of semantic processing, and are robustly evoked when semantic errors are introduced into sentences. These measures are useful for evaluating semantic processing in clinical populations, but it is not known whether they can be evoked in more severe neurodevelopmental disorders where explicit attention to the sentence inputs cannot be objectively assessed (i.e., when sentences are passively listened to). We evaluated whether N400 and LPC/P600 could be detected in adolescents who were explicitly ignoring sentence inputs. Specifically, it was asked whether explicit attention to spoken inputs was required for semantic processing, or if a degree of automatic processing occurs when the focus of attention is directed elsewhere? High-density ERPs were acquired from twenty-two adolescents (12–17 years), under two experimental conditions: 1. individuals actively determined whether the final word in a sentence was congruent or incongruent with sentence context, or 2. passively listened to background sentences while watching a video. When sentences were ignored, N400 and LPC/P600 were robustly evoked to semantic errors, albeit with reduced amplitudes and protracted/delayed latencies. Statistically distinct topographic distributions during passive versus active paradigms pointed to distinct generator configurations for semantic processing as a function of attention. Covert semantic processing continues in neurotypical adolescents when explicit attention is withdrawn from sentence inputs. Preadolescence is a critical period for the onset of puberty and eating‐related psychopathology. More advanced pubertal status is associated with elevated eating pathology. However, it was unclear whether this association was moderated by self‐referential processing, an important, modifiable cognitive risk for various forms of psychopathology, including eating problems. Further, no study has examined the neural correlates of self‐referential processing in relation to eating pathology. To address these gaps, we examined how the association between pubertal status and disordered eating was moderated by self‐referential processing in a community sample of 115 nine‐to‐12‐year‐old preadolescents (66 girls; mean age/SD = 10.98/1.18 years; 87.5% White). Youths reported their pubertal status and disordered eating behaviors and completed an ERP version of the Self‐Referent Encoding Task (SRET) to assess self‐referential processing. A Principal Component Analysis of the ERP data identified an anterior late positive potential (LPP) in both the positive and negative SRET conditions. The LPP in the positive condition moderated the positive association between pubertal status and disordered eating behaviors, such that this association was significant for youths with a smaller LPP toward positive self‐referential cues, but non‐significant for those showing a larger LPP toward positive self‐referential cues. These results suggest that a deeper processing of positive self‐referential information, indicated by a potentiated LPP, may weaken the negative impact of pubertal status on disordered eating. Our findings also suggest that enhancing positive self‐referential processing may be a useful tool in preventing the development of eating pathology in preadolescents, especially for those with more advanced pubertal status. This study for the first time examined the neurophysiological correlates of self‐referential processing in association with puberty and eating pathology in preadolescents. In particular, we provided novel evidence on the moderating effect of the late positive potential (LPP) underlying positive self‐referential processing on the relationship between pubertal status and eating disordered behaviors in youths. Readers extract information from a word from parafoveal vision prior to looking at it. It has been argued that parafoveal perception allows readers to initiate linguistic processes, but it is unclear which stages of word processing are engaged: the process of extracting letter information to recognize words, or the process of extracting meaning to comprehend them. This study used the event‐related brain potential (ERP) technique to investigate how word recognition (indexed by the N400 effect for unexpected or anomalous compared to expected words) and semantic integration (indexed by the Late‐positive component; LPC effect for anomalous compared to expected words) are or are not elicited when the word is perceived only in parafoveal vision. Participants read a target word following a sentence that made it expected, unexpected, or anomalous, and read the sentences presented three words at a time in the Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) with flankers paradigm so that words were perceived in parafoveal and foveal vision. We orthogonally manipulated whether the target word was masked in parafoveal and/or foveal vision to dissociate the processing associated with perception of the target word from either location. We found that the N400 effect was generated from parafoveally perceived words, and was reduced for foveally perceived words if they were previously perceived parafoveally. In contrast, the LPC effect was only elicited if the word was perceived foveally, suggesting that readers must attend to a word directly in foveal vision in order to attempt to integrate its meaning into the sentence context. Our results show that readers can perform word recognition, as indexed by the N400 effect for unexpected or anomalous compared to expected words, for both parafoveally and foveally perceived words. However, parafoveal vision is insufficient for semantic integration, as indexed by the LPC effect for anomalous compared to expected words, because the LPC effect was not observed when the word was only perceived parafoveally. Word recognition begins before a reader looks directly at a word, as demonstrated by the parafoveal preview benefit and word skipping. Both low-level form and high-level semantic features can be accessed in parafoveal vision and used to promote reading efficiency. However, words are not recognized in isolation during reading; once a semantic representation is retrieved, it must be integrated with the broader sentence context. One open question about parafoveal processing is whether it is limited to shallow stages of lexico-semantic activation or extends to semantic integration. In the present two-experiment study, we recorded event-related brain potentials in response to a sentence-final word that was presented in foveal or parafoveal vision and was either expected, unexpected, or anomalous in the sentence context. We found that word recognition, indexed by the N400, ensued regardless of perception location whereas identification of the semantic fit of a word in its sentence context, indexed by the late positive component, was only observed for foveally perceived but not parafoveally perceived words. This pattern was not sensitive to task differences that promote different levels of orthographic scrutiny, as manipulated between the two experiments. These findings demonstrate separate roles for parafoveal and foveal processing in reading. Public Significance Statement: There has long been a public interest in the prospect of speed reading, but scientists have repeatedly challenged this possibility, pointing out that there is a tradeoff between reading speed and accuracy. In particular, if a reader skims the text and does not look at all or most of the words (as during "speed reading"), they cannot comprehend the text as well. The present study adds additional support, via neural data, for the idea that looking directly at a word is necessary to perform aspects of the reading process that lead to a higher level of understanding of a word and its context. Simple multiplication errors are primarily shown in whether the lures are related to the operands (relatedness, such as 3 × 4 = 15 vs. 17) or whether the same decades are shared with the correct answers (consistency, such as 3 × 4 = 16 vs. 21). This study used a delayed verification paradigm and event-related potential technique to investigate the effects of relatedness and consistency in simple multiplication mental arithmetic for 30 college students in an experiment of presenting probes in auditory channels. We found that, compared to the related inconsistent lures, the related consistent lures showed significantly faster reaction time and induced significantly large amplitudes of N400 and late positive component. The findings suggest that related consistent lures are less affected by the activation diffusion of the arithmetic problem, and the credibility of being perceived as the correct answer is less; the lures related to operands and sharing the same decades with the accurate results can promote the judgment of multiplication mental arithmetic, and the results support the Interacting Neighbors Model. Advisors typically receive two types of feedback: whether their advice is accepted and benefits the advisee. However, the effect of interpersonal distance on advisors' feedback responses remains unexplored. Therefore, to examine this association, we used an advice-giving task in which participants acted as advisors to either friends or strangers through event-related potentials (ERP). Participants received feedback reflecting whether their advice was accepted or rejected and the advisee's outcome (gains or losses). Participants' electroencephalograms were recorded when receiving feedback. Results revealed that rejections from friends elicited stronger feedback-related negativity (FRN) than acceptances from friends. Furthermore, acceptances from friends triggered larger late positive components (LPCs) than rejections from friends. No such effects were observed when the advisee was a stranger. Moreover, a stronger FRN was observed for losses than gains when strangers accepted the advice; however, this difference was not observed when strangers rejected the advice. In addition, friends' gains elicited a larger P300 than losses, regardless of whether friends accepted the advice; however, for strangers, this P300 difference was observed only when the advice was accepted. When strangers accepted the advice, gains elicited larger LPCs than losses; however, this difference was not observed when strangers rejected the advice. These results revealed that the interpersonal distance between people affected how they responded to feedback on advice. This was demonstrated by the neural responses related to expectations, motivational significance, and emotional arousal. BackgroundNeuroimaging research has determined deficits in the dopaminergic circuit of major depressive disorder (MDD) during adolescence. This study investigated how emotional contexts modulate the temporal dynamics of reward anticipation and feedback in adolescents.MethodsEEG data from 35 MDD and 37 healthy adolescents were recorded when they conducted a gambling task after being presented with emotional pictures.ResultsThe results demonstrated that both MDD and healthy adolescents exhibited the largest late positive component (LPC) in positive contexts at the frontal sites and the largest LPC in negative contexts at the central sites; however, MDD adolescents exhibited anticipatory LPC hypoactivation than healthy adolescents. However, MDD adolescents exhibited smaller gain feedback negativity (FN) than healthy adolescents independent of emotional contexts, positively correlating with the trait anhedonia according to the consummatory aspect of the Temporal Experience of Pleasure Scale. In contrast, MDD adolescents exhibited greater FN loss in positive and neutral contexts than healthy adolescents while no difference in FN loss was found between the two groups in negative contexts. Moreover, the FN loss amplitudes negatively correlated with hedonic tone according to the Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale over the past week.ConclusionsThese findings suggest that MDD adolescents exhibited dissociable deficits in reward anticipation and gain or loss feedback that are distinctly modulated by emotional contexts, and they deepen our understanding of the modulation of emotional contexts on the temporal dynamic reorganization of the reward circuit in MDD adolescents.

Behavioral data on episodic recollection in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) point limited relational memory functioning. However, the involvement of successive memory processes in the profile of episodic memory in ASD needs more study. Here, we used event‐related potentials (ERP) to investigate the time course of episodic recollection with an associative recognition paradigm with picture pairs. Twenty‐two participants with ASD and 32 with typical development (TD), all right‐handed, were included. Behavioral results confirmed difficulties in correctly recognizing identical pairs in the ASD relative to TD group. We found an unexpected amplitude decrement on the P2 (220–270 msec) and FN400 (350–470 msec) potentials, suggesting diminished priming and familiarity effects in the ASD relative to TD group. However, ERP data revealed that the recognition of associative information relies on the same electrophysiological process (old/new effect in the 600–700‐msec late positive component) in ASD participants as in TD ones, with a parietal extension in the ASD group. These results suggest that the electrophysiological processes of associative recognition are qualitatively similar in individuals with and without ASD but may differ quantitatively. This difference may be driven by the reduced early processing of picture pairs that may in turn lead to their diminished integration into the semantic memory system, being partially compensated by a greater involvement of associative memory during the recollection process. Other studies would be useful to go further in identifying these cognitive processes involved in atypical recognition in ASD and their neural substrates. Novel word learning and consolidation was studied in inexperienced language learners, to conceptually replicate and extend a similar study in experienced learners by Bakker, Takashima, Van Hell, Janzen, and McQueen (2015). Participants learned definitions for novel words on Day 1 and for another set of novel words on Day 2. Brain potentials collected in a semantic relatedness task revealed that learned words elicited a late positive component (LPC) priming effect after 24 hours but not on the day of learning. On Day 8, all previously learned words elicited LPC priming effects, but failed to modulate the N400. While LPC modulation emerged immediately after learning in the previous study of experienced learners, novel word meanings were found lexicalized only on Day 2 for inexperienced learners. How do bilinguals freely switch languages in daily life (i.e., voluntary language switching)? Does this involve inhibition of cross-language interference, or does easier lexical access to specific words directly trigger switches to another language? To reveal the underlying mechanism of voluntary language switching, the current study applied transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (rDLPFC), an area associated with inhibitory control, to investigate whether and how inhibitory control is involved in voluntary language switching. Interestingly, during the A-tDCS and C-tDCS sessions, bilinguals showed faster naming latencies in repeat trials compared to switch trials, indicating a switch cost. Moreover, the cathodal stimulation exhibited a larger LPC in switching to L2 compared to switching to L1. In contrast, the S-tDCS (sham) session showed no switch cost, faster switch naming latencies compared to the A-tDCS and C-tDCS sessions, and little differences in LPC between switch and repeat trials. Neuropsychologists report that up to 40% of individuals undergoing evaluations for TBI may be malingering neurocognitive deficits for a compensatory reward. The memory recognition test of malingering detection is effective but can be coached behaviorally. There is great need to develop a novel neural based method for discriminating fake from true brain injury. Here we test the hypothesis that decision making of faking memory deficits prolongs frontal neural responses. We applied an advanced method measuring decision latency in milliseconds for discriminating true TBI from malingerers who fake brain injury. To test this hypothesis, latencies of memory-related brain potentials were compared among true patients with moderate or severe TBI, and healthy age-matched individuals who were assigned either to be honest or faking memory deficit. Scalp signals of electroencephalography (EEG) were recorded with a 32-channel cap during an Old/New memory recognition task in three age- and education-matched groups: honest (n = 12), malingering (n = 15), and brain injured (n = 14) individuals. Bilateral fractional latencies of late positive ERP at frontal sites were compared among the three groups under both studied (Old) and non-studied (New) memory recognition conditions. Results show a significant difference between the fractional latencies of the late positive component during recognition of studied items in malingerers (averaged latencies = 396 ms) and the true brain injured subjects (mean = 312 ms) in the frontal sites. Only malingers showed asymmetrical frontal activity compared to the two other groups. These new findings support the hypothesis that that additional frontal processing of malingering individuals is measurably different from those of actual patients with brain injury. In contrast to our previous reported method using difference waves of amplitudes at frontal to posterior midline sites during new items recognition (Vagnini et al., 2008), there was no significant latency difference among groups during recognition of New items. The current method using delayed left frontal neural responses during studied items reached sensitivity of 80% and specificity of 79% in detecting malingers from true brain injury.

Currently, there is increasing attention on how to best improve language control efficiency and minimize cross-language interference in bilinguals. Previous studies have demonstrated that right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (rDLPFC) plays an important role in inhibiting unrelated stimuli. The current study applied transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) during language switching to determine whether modulation of rDLPFC would affect language control mechanisms. All the participants have undergone three types of stimulations: cathodal stimulation, anodal stimulation and sham stimulation. The sequence of three stimulations was counterbalanced across participants. After each stimulation, participants performed picture naming task for language switching. Unbalanced bilinguals exhibited a larger late positive component (LPC) in switching to the weaker language than to the dominant one and similar L1 and L2 switch costs only in the cathodal tDCS (C-tDCS) session. Further analyses showed that the differences of switch costs (L1 switch costs – L2 switch costs) in the C-tDCS session were smaller than in the sham-tDCS (S-tDCS) session. Results were largely consistent with the assumption that cathodal stimulation improving inhibitory control abilities of unbalanced bilinguals to help them better inhibit interference. Another possibility is that cathodal stimulation also worked in other brain areas (e.g., supplementary motor area), which potentially altered unbalanced bilinguals’ speech planning or abilities to encode task sets. To explore the neuro-mechanism of the time course of processing a hurt situation, we analyzed event-related potentials (ERPs) generated in the brain in response to stimuli in individuals with different degrees of forgiveness. Participants were 216 university students. Of the early ERP components, the negative-deflecting N1 was modulated neither by degree of forgiveness nor by the hurt situation, and the positive-deflecting P2 was larger for low-for-giveness than for high-forgiveness participants, and for low-hurt than for high-hurt situations. The N2, which identifies and encodes stimulus, was enhanced in the high-forgiveness group and for high-hurt situations. Importantly, the late positive component (LPC) stage of stimulus evaluation was larger in the high-forgiveness group for high-hurt situations, but in the low-forgiveness group was evident for low-hurt situations. The present study aimed to provide electrophysiological evidence about acquiring complex numerical rules when unexpected numbers were presented. Hence, we compared the neural correlates underlying the acquisition of unexpected complex rules (e.g., 12, 14, 18, 24) compared to expected simple rules (e.g., 12, 14, 16, 18). The event-related potential (ERP) results for the rule acquisition process for the third numbers showed that, in contrast to expected simple rules, unexpected complex rules elicited: an enhanced N200, reflecting the detection of a conflict between the expected numbers and the displayed numbers; a decreased P300, indicating a feeling of uncertainty accompanied by identifying numerical regularity; and an increased LPC, reflecting the working-memory updating caused by expectancy violation and rule acquisition. The misinformation effect, a phenomenon in which eyewitness memories are altered via exposure to post-event misinformation, is one of the most important paradigms used to investigate the reconstructive nature of human memory. The aim of this study was to use the misinformation effect paradigm to investigate differences in attentional and recollective processing between true and false event memories. Nineteen participants completed a variant of the misinformation paradigm in which recognition responses to true and misinformation based event details embedded within a narrative context, were investigated using high-density (256-channel) EEG with a 1-day delay between event exposure and test. Source monitoring responses were used to isolate event-related-potentials (ERPs) associated with perceptual (i.e. event) source attributions. Temporal-spatial analyses of these ERPs showed evidence of an elevated P3b and Late-Positive Component, associated with stronger context-matching responses and recollective activity respectively, in true perceptual memories relative to false misinformation based ones. These findings represent the first retrieval focused EEG investigation of the misinformation effect and highlight the interplay between attention and retrieval processes in episodic memory recognition. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether age-related brain response alterations during sentence comprehension exist when verbal fluency and intelligence are controlled for. Twenty-four younger and twenty-four older adults with matched verbal fluency, verbal intelligence, years of education, and gender ratio were recruited. They were asked to read congruent (CON) and incongruent (INCON) sentences to make semantic acceptability judgments. A significant group by condition interaction on accuracy was found, showing a significant congruency effect in younger, but not older adults. The ERP results revealed a dynamic temporal-spatial change in older adults. The congruency related N400 effect was reduced and delayed significantly in the older adults compared to the younger adults, and accompanied by different distribution patterns across time windows. The late positive component with more positive-going in the INCON condition than the CON condition was found in older adults only, which did not correlate with the performance, however. Belief reasoning is typical mental state reasoning in Theory of Mind (ToM). Although previous studies have explored the neural bases of belief reasoning, the neural correlates of belief reasoning for self and for others are rarely addressed. The decoupling mechanism of distinguishing the mental state of others from one’s own is essential for ToM processing. To address the electrophysiological bases underlying the decoupling mechanism, the present event-related potential study compared the time course of neural activities associated with belief reasoning for self and for others when the belief belonging to self was consistent or inconsistent with others. Results showed that during a 450-600 ms period, belief reasoning for self elicited a larger late positive component (LPC) than for others when beliefs were inconsistent with each other. The LPC divergence is assumed to reflect the categorization of agencies in ToM processes.

Apology from the offender facilitates forgiveness and thus has the power to restore a broken relationship. Here we showed that apology from the offender not only reduces the victim’s propensity to react aggressively but also alters the victim’s implicit attitude and neural responses towards the offender. We adopted an interpersonal competitive game which consisted of two phases. In the first, passive phase, participants were punished by high or low pain stimulation chosen by the opponents when losing a trial. During the break, participants received a note from each of the opponents, one apologizing and the other not. The second, active phase involved a change of roles where participants could punish the two opponents when winning. Experiment 1 included an Implicit Association Test (IAT) in between the reception of notes and the second phase. Experiment 2 recorded participants’ brain potentials in the second phase. We found that participants reacted less aggressively towards the apologizing opponent than the non-apologizing opponent in the active phase. Moreover, female, but not male, participants responded faster in the IAT when positive and negative words were associated to the apologizing and the non-apologizing opponents, respectively, suggesting that female participants had enhanced implicit attitude towards the apologizing opponent. Furthermore, the late positive component (LPP) in brain potentials, a component associated with affective/motivational reactions, was larger for viewing the portrait of the apologizing than the non-apologizing opponent when participants subsequently selected low punishment. Additionally, the LPP elicited by the apologizing opponents’ portrait was larger in the female than in the male participants. These findings confirm the apology’s role in reducing reactive aggression and further reveal that this forgiveness process engages, at least in female, an enhancement of the victim’s implicit attitude and a prosocial motivational change towards the offender.

This event-related potential (ERP) study aims to investigate the neural processing of nouns and verbs in Chinese, especially the processing of monosyllabic nouns (MNs) and verbs (MVs) versus disyllabic nouns (DNs) and verbs (DVs). All four types of words were embedded in syntactically well-defined contexts and a semantic relatedness judgment task was performed. Results showed that, regardless of the number of syllables, verbs elicited more negative N400 than nouns, which may be due to the semantic difference between object and action rather than concreteness or imageability. Furthermore, DVs elicited a greater N1 and a smaller late positive component than DNs whereas such differences were absent in the comparison between MNs and MVs. The N1 and late positive component seem to reflect the early detection and late integration of the syntactic mismatch between the verb contexts and noun usage of DVs, respectively. The findings of the current study indicated that the word class effect in Chinese is due to the semantic differences between nouns and verbs, calling into attention the importance of distinguishing monosyllabic words from disyllabic words when examining the word class effect in Chinese. Information regarding the past-self may be viewed as information referring to other people. However, evidence supporting this notion at the neural level is rather sparse and it remains unclear whether the past-self is processed like any 'other' or like the close-other only. The aim of this event-related potential study was to investigate this issue. A reflection task requiring evaluation of positive and negative trait adjectives with respect to present- and past-self, a close-other and a famous person was applied. We hypothesized that the past-self and close-other conditions would share their neural underpinnings. The process of reflection on the past-self and close-other was indeed associated with similar mean amplitudes of the late positive component (LPC), whereas in the case of the past-self vs. famous person comparison LPC was significantly enhanced for the past-self. Analogous effects were observed when LPC was calculated for trials with traits judged as either suitable or unsuitable to describe a person who was the target of reflection. Thus, these findings suggest that the processing of information related to the past-self resembles processing of information related to a personally relevant other. The effect of Age of Acquisition (AoA) on visual word recognition is remarkable. However, there is debate about the loci of AoA effects. The Arbitrary Mapping hypothesis assumes AoA reflects mappings between input (e.g. orthography) and output (e.g. phonology) formed during the acquisition of literacy. An alternative view is that AoA reflects the acquisition of concepts. The AM hypothesis predicts reduced AoA effects on the recognition of written words with transparent mappings between orthography and phonological e.g. chair compared to written words with more opaque mappings between orthography and phonology e.g. choir . In the Persian language, mappings between letters and phonological output are predictable and transparent. However, in skilled reading, many written words become opaque due to the omission of vowels (diacritics) in adult text. Using event-related potential methods (ERP) we tested the prediction that AoA effects on ERP components would be reduced for words with transparent spellings compared to words with opaque spellings for skilled readers. We found an effect of AoA on visual word recognition in the window between 300 and 450 ms with higher N400 negativity for late acquired words and an interaction between transparency and AoA at an unexpected late component (450–700 ms) with significantly higher positivity for late acquired opaque words only. We conclude that AoA effects on Persian visual word recognition reflect arbitrary mappings between print and sound and offer a neurolinguistic account of AoA effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to investigate characteristics of the semantic processing of sentences’ final verbs in stutterers using event-related potential (ERP). ERPs elicited from semantically violating and non-violating verbs in Japanese sentences were compared between 13 adults who stutter (AWS) and 13 adults who do not stutter (AWNS). The stimulus sentences elicited the N400 and the late positive component (LPC) in both groups. The amplitude of the N400, however, was attenuated in AWS. Regarding the LPC, the LPC in the 450–700 ms time window (the early LPC) was evident in both groups, but the LPC in the 700–850 time window (the late LPC) was only apparent in AWS. Because AWS judged sentence congruency as accurately as AWNS did, it is assumed that AWS depended more on the LPC for semantic processing, resulting in the enhancement of the late LPC. The neuronal response to hearing a subject׳s own name (SON) has been often investigated using event-related potential (ERP) or time–frequency analysis, but seldom by a combination of these methods. Using this combination of approaches would allow the relationship between memory processes engaged by SON and the neuronal responses to be studied in more detail. Thus, the present study used both ERP and time–frequency analysis to investigate memory process for SON by comparing the responses to SON and to unfamiliar names. Specifically, the SON condition was compared with two control conditions: repeated unfamiliar names and singly presented unfamiliar names. This experimental design allowed us to determine the differences in memory processes between hearing one׳s own name and hearing unrelated but repeatedly heard names. ERP analysis showed that SON elicited a late positive component in parietal areas, while unfamiliar names elicited no positivity. Beta power suppression was observed in response to SON at 0.4–0.6 s after stimulus onset at right central sites, but not in response to unfamiliar names. These results are indicative of an involvement of episodic memory processes on hearing SON, which corresponds to the recognition of one׳s own name. Further, the ERP results suggest the presence of a “new” stimulus recognition process that is activated by singly presented unfamiliar names but not by repeated unfamiliar names. Aims The aim of this study was to investigate the neurocognitive processes mediating the processing of emotional information during the integration of contextual and social information in a schizotypal population. Methods One hundred and thirty-one healthy participants were evaluated using the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire and event-related potentials were recorded during a linguistic task in which participants read sentence pairs describing short social situations to themselves. The first sentence implicitly conveyed the positive or negative emotional state of a character. The second sentence was emotionally congruent or incongruent with the first sentence. Results Across our overall sample, our results revealed a greater N400 effect at right sites than left sites, whereas the late positive component effect was only observed at left sites. Concerning the correlation results, we observed a negative link between positive and global schizotypy and N400 modulation in response to congruent targets for positive context sentences. Results also showed a positive correlation between negative schizotypy and late positive component modulation in response to congruent targets for negative context sentences. Conclusions These results suggest that the different facets of the schizotypal personality traits influenced the integration of emotional context at the level of both early and later-mobilized neurocognitive processes. Objective: High individual variability is frequently observed in multistable perception, but few ERP studies have considered this factor. The present investigation evaluates the relation between individual perceptual switching and the modulation of reversal-related ERP components. Methods: We used a bistable perception paradigm (Kornmeier and Bach, 2004), consisting of briefly flashed grid of nine Necker cubes, interspersed by a blank screen. The subject's task was to compare the previous stimulus with the latter one. The number of reversal perceptions was used as a measure of individual perceptual switching behaviour. Results: As in previously reported findings, Reversal Negativity (RN, 180-300 ms) and Late Positive Component (LPC, 350-600 ms) were identified in response to reversal perception. In terms of individual differences, higher reversals were associated with reduced negativity of the RN and enhanced positivity of the LPC. Conclusion: The timing of the present results supports the hypothesis that individual variability in perceptual reversal is associated with different neural activations at later stage of processing, when the neural representation of ambiguous figure must be internalized to produce an appropriate response/ behaviour. Significance: Multistable perception can reveal crucial mechanisms underlying individual perceptual re-organization when inconsistent or incoherent stimuli come from the environment.
