Radiation from the "plunging region" (the space between the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) and the black-hole (BH) surface) of an accretion flow onto a BH is supposed to add a small but significant contribution to the X-ray spectra of X-ray binary systems. The plunging region and its electromagnetic emission has been recently described by numerical and analytic calculations which lead to the conclusion that in the plunging region radiation is generated by the energy release through the action of a "leftover" stress in the vicinity of the ISCO and that the amount of this leftover can be chosen as a free parameter of the accretion-flow description. The present article aims to demonstrate that this is not true because the stress in the whole accretion flow onto a black hole is determined by its global transonic character enforced by the space-time structure of the accreting black hole. We use the slim-disc approximation (SDA) to illustrate this point. In our article we compare models obtained with the SDA with results of numerical simulations and of analytical models based on the assumption that accreting matter flows along geodesics. We show that the latter cannot describe adequately the physics of astrophysical accretion onto a BH because 1. particles on geodesics cannot emit electromagnetic radiation, 2. they ignore the global transonic character of the accretion flow imposed by the presence of a stationary horizon in the BH spacetime; a presence that fixes a unique value of the angular momentum at the BH surface for a solution to exist. Therefore the fact that geodesics-based models reproduce the trans-ISCO behaviour of GRRMHD simulations proves the physical reality of neither. Schaefer (2024) has recently published observations of binary period derivatives $\dot P$ for 52 cataclysmic variables, and concluded that these strongly conflict with all proposed evolutionary pictures for these systems. We point out once again that using measurements of $\dot P$ is likely in practice to produce misleading evolutionary constraints in almost every case. The one identified exception to this is probably the recently-born X-ray binary SN 2022jli, because of its extremely high mass transfer rate., Comment: 2 pages, no figures

The growing database of gravitational-wave (GW) detections with the binary black holes (BHs) merging in the distant Universe contains subtle insights into their formation scenarios. One of the puzzling properties of detected GW sources is the possible (anti)correlation between mass ratio q of BH-BH binaries and their effective spin. We use rapid binary evolution models to demonstrate that the isolated binary evolution followed by efficient tidal spin-up of stripped helium core produces a similar pattern in Xeff vs q distributions of BH-BH mergers. In our models, the progenitors of unequal BH-BH systems in the stable mass transfer formation scenario are more likely to efficiently shrink their orbits during the second Roche-lobe overflow than the binaries that evolve into nearly equal-mass component systems. This makes it easier for unequal-mass progenitors to enter the tidal spin-up regime and later merge due to GW emission. Our results are, however, sensitive to some input assumptions, especially, the stability of mass transfer and the angular momentum loss during non-conservative mass transfer. We note that mass transfer prescriptions widely adopted in rapid codes favor the formation of BH-BH merger progenitors with unequal masses and moderate separations. We compare our results with detailed stellar model grids and find reasonable agreement after appropriate calibration of the physics models. We anticipate that future detections of unequal-mass BH-BH mergers could provide valuable constraints on the role of the stable mass transfer formation channel. A significant fraction of BH-BH detections with mass ratio q in range (0.4 - 0.7) would be consistent with the mass ratio reversal scenario during the first, relatively conservative mass transfer, and a non-enhanced angular momentum loss during the second, highly non-conservative mass transfer phase., Comment: Version accepted for publication in A&A

Observations show that the 12.4 d binary system descending from the recent supernova SN 2022jli closely fits hypotheses of how low-mass X-ray binaries form, but requires an apparently super-Eddington accretion luminosity from the accreting component. We show that this agrees very well with the type of accretion-induced beaming found in ultraluminous X-ray sources, as recently strongly confirmed by X-ray polarimetry of the X-ray binary Cyg X-3. Beaming in the SN2022jli binary system occurs because of the very high mass-transfer rate induced by the violent effect of the supernova on the binary geometry. This explains the very soft nature of the accretion luminosity, its distinctive periodic light curve, and its luminosity decay on a ~250 day timescale. Although during the last decade new observations and new theoretical results have brought better understanding of the physics of accretion onto compact objects, many old and several new questions and problems await answers and solutions. I show how the disc thermal-viscous instability model applied to both cataclysmic variable stars and X-ray binary transients compels us to conclude that assuming the existence in these systems of a flat accretion disc extending down to the accretor's surface or to the last stable orbit and fed with matter at its outer edge is too simple and inadequate a description of these objects. It is also clear that, in most cases, these discs cannot driven by (anomalous) viscosity only. The origin of the superhumps observed in cataclysmic variables and X-ray binaries is, contrary to the common opinion, still unknown. In accreting magnetic white dwarf systems outbursts not of the dwarf-nova type can be due to the magnetic gating instability and/or thermonuclear micronova explosions. Although the "typical" lightcvurves of X-ray transients can be described by analytical formulae (but their decay phase is not exponential), observations show that in many cases the light variations in these systems are much more complex. An elementary argument shows the impossibility of magnetars in pulsing ultraluminous X-ray systems, but we still do not have a complete, self-consistent description of supercritical accretion onto magnetized neutron stars and the resulting (necessarily beamed) emission. We show that magnetar models for ULX behaviour have serious internal inconsistencies. The magnetic fields required to increase the limiting luminosity for radiation pressure above the observed (assumed isotropic) luminosities are completely incompatible with the spin-up rates observed for pulsing ULXs. We note that at least one normal Be-star + neutron star system, with a standard (non-magnetar) field, is observed to become a ULX during a large outburst, and return to its previous Be-star binary state afterwards. We note further that recent polarimetric observations of the well-studied binary Cyg X-3 reveal that it produces strong emission directed away from the observer, in line with theoretical suggestions of its luminosity from evolutionary arguments. We conclude that the most likely explanation for ULX behaviour involves radiation beaming by accretion disc winds. Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are our best laboratories for studying extreme super-Eddington accretion. Most studies of these objects are of relatively persistent sources, however there is growing evidence to suggest a large fraction of these sources are transient. Here we present a sample of five newly reported transient ULXs in the galaxies NGC 4945, NGC 7793 and M81 serendipitously discovered in Swift/XRT observations. Swift monitoring of these sources have provided well sampled lightcurves, allowing for us to model the lightcurves with the disk instability model of Hameury & Lasota (2020) which implies durations of 60-400 days and that the mass accretion rate through the disk is close to or greater than the Eddington rate. Of the three source regions with prior HST imaging, color magnitude diagrams of the potential stellar counterparts show varying ages of the possible stellar counterparts. Our estimation of the rates of these sources in these three galaxies is 0.4-1.3 year$^{-1}$. We find that while persistent ULXs dominate the high end of galaxy luminosity functions, the number of systems that produce ULX luminosities are likely dominated by transient sources., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The study of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) has changed dramatically over the last decade. In this review we first describe the most important observations of ULXs in various wavebands, and across multiple scales in space and time. We discuss recent progress and current unanswered questions. We consider the range of current theories of ULX properties in the light of this observational progress. I present the elements of accretion-disc physics applied to active galactic nuclei. The accretion driving mechanisms are discussed, then models of geometrically-thin discs, both stationary and time-dependent, are addressed. Disc's self-gravitation in the AGN context is presented. The shapes of spectral line from accretion discs are explained in both newtonian and relativistic cases. The physics of disc's thermal and viscous instabilities is dicussed in detail and models are applied to AGN discs. Finally, the problems of thick accretion flows (ADAFs and slim discs), disc coronae, winds and jets are discussed in some detail. The last decade has seen a significant gain in both space and ground-based monitoring capabilities, producing vastly better coverage of BH X-ray binaries during their (rare) transient events. This interval included two of the three brightest X-ray outbursts ever observed, namely V404 Cyg in 2015, and MAXI J1820+070 in 2018, as well as the outburst of Swift J1357.2-0933, the first such system to show variable period optical dipping. There are now superb multi-wavelength archives of these outbursts, both photometric and spectroscopic, that show substantial outflows in the form of jets and disc winds, and X-ray spectroscopy/timing that reveals how the inner accretion disc evolves. The ground-based AAVSO optical monitoring of the MAXI J1820+070 event was the most extensive ever obtained, revealing periodic variations that evolved as it approached its state transition. These modulations were of an amplitude never seen before, and suggested the development of an irradiation-driven disc warp that persisted through the transition. Magnetically gated accretion has emerged as a proposed mechanism for producing extremely short, repetitive bursts of accretion onto magnetized white dwarfs in intermediate polars (IPs), but this phenomenon has not been detected previously in a confirmed IP. We report the 27-day TESS light curve of V1025 Cen, an IP that shows a remarkable series of twelve bursts of accretion, each lasting for less than six hours. The extreme brevity of the bursts and their short recurrence times (~1-3 days) are incompatible with the dwarf-nova instability, but they are natural consequences of the magnetic gating mechanism developed by Spruit & Taam to explain the Type II bursts of the accreting neutron star known as the Rapid Burster. In this model, the accretion flow piles up at the magnetospheric boundary and presses inward until it couples with the star's magnetic field, producing an abrupt burst of accretion. After each burst, the reservoir of matter at the edge of the magnetosphere is replenished, leading to cyclical bursts of accretion. A pair of recent studies applied this instability to the suspected IPs MV Lyr and TW Pic, but the magnetic nature of these two systems has not been independently confirmed. In contrast, previous studies have unambiguously established the white dwarf in V1025 Cen to be significantly magnetized. The detection of magnetically gated bursts in a confirmed IP therefore validates the extension of the Spruit & Taam instability to magnetized white dwarfs., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL

Bachetti et al. (2021) have recently claimed to measure the mass transfer rate in the pulsing ULX system M82 X-2 by following the change of its orbital period over 7 yr. We reiterate the known point that this method cannot give a reliable result (or even necessarily predict the correct sign of long-term period change) without a far longer baseline (here $\gg 1000$~yr) or for systems with a much higher long-term mass transfer rate ($\gg 10^{-4} \rm M_{\odot}/{\rm yr}$), if they exist. Applying the method of Bachetti et al. (2021) to measured orbital period derivatives predicts that the well-studied quiescent X-ray transients XTEJ1118+480, A0620-00 should currently instead have steady accretion discs and be bright X-ray sources, while Nova Muscae 1991 should be still brighter (a ULX). But all three sources are observed to be extremely faint. We conclude that there is no evidence to support the high mass transfer rate that Bachetti et al. (2021) find for M82 X-2 as it is deduced from period noise not related to the binary evolution., Comment: 3 pages

We present high-speed optical photometry from SAAO and SALT on the black hole LMXB \MAXI (ASSASN-18ey), some of it simultaneous with NICER, Swift and Insight-HXMT X-ray coverage. We detect optical Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (QPOs) that move to higher frequencies as the outburst progresses, tracking both the frequency and evolution of similar X-ray QPOs previously reported. Correlated X-ray/optical data reveal a complex pattern of lags, including an anti-correlation and a sub-second lag that evolve over the first few weeks of outburst. They also show correlated components separated by a lag equal to the QPO period roughly centered on zero lag, implying that the inter-band variability is strongly and consistently affected by these QPOs at a constant phase lag of roughly +/- pi. The synchronisation of X-ray and optical QPOs indicates that they must be produced in regions physically very close to each other; we thus propose that they can be explained by a precessing jet model, based on analogies with V404 Cyg and MAXI J1348-630.

The black-hole X-ray transient MAXI J1820+07 (=ASSASN-18ey) discovered in March 2018 was one of the optically brightest ever seen, which has resulted in very detailed optical outburst light-curves being obtained. We combine them here with X-ray and radio light-curves to show the major geometric changes the source undergoes. We present a detailed temporal analysis that reveals the presence of remarkably high amplitude (>0.5 mag) modulations, which evolve from the superhump (16.87 h) period towards the presumed orbital (16.45 h) period. These modulations appear ~87d after the outburst began, and follow the Swift/BAT hard X-ray light-curve, which peaks 4 days before the radio flare and jet ejection, when the source undergoes a rapid hard to soft state transition. The optical modulation then moves closer to the orbital period, with a light curve peak that drifts slowly in orbital phase from ~0.8 to ~0.3 during the soft state. We propose that the unprecedentedly large amplitude modulation requires a warp in the disc in order to provide a large enough radiating area, and for the warp to be irradiation-driven. Its sudden turn-on implies a change in the inner disc geometry that raises the hard X-ray emitting component to a height where it can illuminate the warped outer disc regions., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS

Although ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULX) are important for astrophysics due to their extreme apparent super-Eddington luminosities, their nature is still poorly known. Theoretical and observational studies suggest that ULXs could be a diversified group of objects composed of low-mass X-ray binaries, high-mass X-ray binaries and marginally also systems containing intermediate-mass black holes, which is supported by their presence in a variety of environments. Observational data on the ULX donors could significantly boost our understanding of these systems, but only a few were detected. There are several candidates, mostly red supergiants (RSGs), but surveys are typically biased toward luminous near-infrared objects. Nevertheless, it is worth exploring if RSGs can be members of ULX binaries. In such systems matter accreted onto the compact body would have to be provided by the stellar wind of the companion, since a Roche-lobe overflow could be unstable for relevant mass-ratios. Here we present a comprehensive study of the evolution and population of wind-fed ULXs and provide a theoretical support for the link between RSGs and ULXs. Our estimated upper limit on contribution of wind-fed ULX to the overall ULX population is $\sim75$--$96\%$ for young ($<100$ Myr) star forming environments, $\sim 49$--$87\%$ for prolonged constant star formation (e.g., disk of Milky Way), and $\lesssim1\%$ for environments in which star formation ceased long time ($>2$ Gyr) ago. We show also that some wind-fed ULXs (up to $6\%$) may evolve into merging double compact objects (DCOs), but typical systems are not viable progenitors of such binaries because of their large separations. It is now widely accepted that most ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are binary systems whose large (above $10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$) apparent luminosities are explained by super-Eddington accretion onto a stellar-mass compact object. Many of the ULXs, especially those containing magnetized neutron stars, are highly variable; some exhibit transient behaviour. Large luminosities might imply large accretion discs that could be therefore prone to the thermal-viscous instability known to drive outbursts of dwarf novae and low-mass X-ray binary transient sources. The aim of this paper is to extend and generalize the X-ray transient disc-instability model to the case of large (outer radius larger than $10^{12}$ cm) accretion discs and apply it to the description of systems with super-Eddington accretion rates at outburst and, in some cases, super-Eddington mass transfer rates. We have used our disc-instability-model code to calculate the time evolution of the accretion disc and the outburst properties. We show that, provided that self-irradiation of the accretion disc is efficient even when the accretion rate exceeds the Eddington value, possibly due to scattering back of the X-ray flux emitted by the central parts of the disc on the outer portions of the disc, heating fronts can reach the disc's outer edge generating high accretion rates. We also provide analytical approximations for the observable properties of the outbursts. We have reproduced successfully the observed properties of galactic transients with large discs, such as V404 Cyg, as well as some ULXs such as M51 XT-1. Our model can reproduce the peak luminosity and decay time of ESO 243-39 HLX-1 outbursts if the accretor is a neutron star. We show that ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) with coherent X-ray pulsing (PULXs) probably have neutron-star spin axes significantly misaligned from their central accretion discs. Scattering in the funnels collimating their emission and producing their apparent super-Eddington luminosities is the most likely origin of the observed correlation between pulse fraction and X-ray photon energy. Pulsing is suppressed in systems with the neutron-star spin closely aligned to the inner disc, explaining why some ULXs show cyclotron features indicating strong magnetic fields, but do not pulse. We suggest that alignment (or conceivably, field suppression through accretion) generally occurs within a fairly short fraction of the ULX lifetime, so that most neutron-star ULXs become unpulsed. As a result we further suggest that almost all ULXs actually have neutron-star accretors, rather than black holes or white dwarfs, reflecting their progenitor high-mass X-ray binary and supersoft X-ray source populations., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables. We explore the different formation channels of merging double compact objects (DCOs: BH-BH/BH-NS/NS-NS) that went through a ultraluminous X-ray phase (ULX: X-ray sources with apparent luminosity exceeding $10^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$). There are many evolutionary scenarios which can naturally explain the formation of merging DCO systems: isolated binary evolution, dynamical evolution inside dense clusters and chemically homogeneous evolution of field binaries. It is not clear which scenario is responsible for the majority of LIGO/Virgo sources. Finding connections between ULXs and DCOs can potentially point to the origin of merging DCOs as more and more ULXs are discovered. We use the StarTrack population synthesis code to show how many ULXs will form merging DCOs in the framework of isolated binary evolution. Our merger rate calculation shows that in the local Universe typically 50% of merging BH-BH progenitor binaries have evolved through a ULX phase. This indicates that ULXs can be used to study the origin of LIGO/Virgo sources. We have also estimated that the fraction of observed ULXs that will form merging DCOs in future varies between 5% to 40% depending on common envelope model and metallicity., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, Accepted in MNRAS

We consider the current observed ensemble of pulsing ultraluminous X-ray sources (PULXs). We show that all of their observed properties (luminosity, spin period, and spinup rate) are consistent with emission from magnetic neutron stars with fields in the usual range $10^{11} - 10^{13}\, {\rm G}$, which is collimated (`beamed') by the outflow from an accretion disc supplied with mass at a super-Eddington rate, but ejecting the excess, in the way familiar for other (non-pulsing) ULXs. The observed properties are inconsistent with magnetar-strength fields in all cases. We point out that all proposed pictures of magnetar formation suggest that they are unlikely to be members of binary systems, in agreement with the observation that all confirmed magnetars are single. We have analyzed how anisotropic emission of radiation affects the observed sample of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) by performing simulations of the evolution of stellar populations, employing recent developments in stellar and binary physics, and by utilizing a geometrical beaming model motivated by theory and observation. Whilst ULXs harboring black hole accretors (BH ULXs) are typically emitting isotropically, the majority of ULXs with neutron star accretors (NS ULXs) are found to be beamed. These findings confirm previous assertions that a significant fraction of ULXs are hidden from view due to a substantial misalignment of the emission beam and the line-of-sight. We find the total number of NS ULXs in regions with constant star formation, solar metallicity, and ages above ~1 Gyr to be higher than the BH ULXs, although observationally both populations are comparable. For lower metallicities BH ULX dominate both the total and observed ULX populations. As far as burst star-formation is concerned, young ULX populations are dominated by BH ULXs, but this changes as the population ages and, post star-formation, NS ULXs dominate both the observed and total population of ULXs. We also compare our simulation output to a previous analytical prediction for the relative ratio of BH to NS ULXs in idealized flux-limited observations and find broad agreement for all but the lowest metallicities. The disk instability model attributes the outbursts of dwarf novae to a thermal-viscous instability of their accretion disk, an instability to which nova-like stars are not subject. We aim to test the fundamental prediction of the disk instability model: the separation of cataclysmic variables (CVs) into nova-likes and dwarf novae depending on orbital period and mass transfer rate from the companion. We analyse the lightcurves from a sample of ~130 CVs with a parallax distance in the Gaia DR2 catalogue to derive their average mass transfer rate. The method for converting optical magnitude to mass accretion rate is validated against theoretical lightcurves of dwarf novae. Dwarf novae (resp. nova-likes) are consistently placed in the unstable (resp. stable) region of the orbital period - mass transfer rate plane predicted by the disk instability model. None of the analyzed systems present a challenge to the model. These results are robust against the possible sources of error and bias that we investigated. Lightcurves from Kepler or, in the future, the LSST or Plato surveys, could alleviate a major source of uncertainty, the irregular sampling rate of the lightcurves, assuming good constraints can be set on the orbital parameters of the CVs that they happen to target. FO Aquarii, an asynchronous magnetic cataclysmic variable (intermediate polar) went into a low-state in 2016, from which it slowly and steadily recovered without showing dwarf nova outbursts. This requires explanation since in a low-state, the mass-transfer rate is in principle too low for the disc to be fully ionized and the disc should be subject to the standard thermal and viscous instability observed in dwarf novae. We investigate the conditions under which an accretion disc in an intermediate polar could exhibit a luminosity drop of 2 magnitudes in the optical band without showing outbursts. We use our numerical code for the time evolution of accretion discs, including other light sources from the system (primary, secondary, hot spot). We show that although it is marginally possible for the accretion disc in the low-state to stay on the hot stable branch, the required mass-transfer rate in the normal state would then have to be extremely high, of the order of 10$^{19}$ gs$^{-1}$ or even larger. This would make the system so intrinsically bright that its distance should be much larger than allowed by all estimates. We show that observations of FO Aqr are well accounted for by the same mechanism that we have suggested as explaining the absence of outbursts during low states of VY Scl stars: during the decay, the magnetospheric radius exceeds the circularization radius, so that the disc disappears before it enters the instability strip for dwarf nova outbursts. Our results are unaffected, and even reinforced, if accretion proceeds both via the accretion disc and directly via the stream during some intermediate stages; the detailed process through which the disc disappears still needs investigations., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. Recently, several ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) sources were shown to host a neutron star (NS) accretor. We perform a suite of evolutionary calculations which show that, in fact, NSs are the dominant type of ULX accretor. Although black holes (BH) dominate early epochs after the star-formation burst, NSs outweigh them after a few 100 Myr and may appear as late as a few Gyr after the end of the star formation episode. If star formation is a prolonged and continuous event (i.e., not a relatively short burst), NS accretors dominate ULX population at any time in solar metallicity environment, whereas BH accretors dominate when the metallicity is sub-solar. Our results show a very clear (and testable) relation between the companion/donor evolutionary stage and the age of the system. A typical NS ULX consists of a $\sim1.3\,M_\odot$ NS and $\sim1.0\,M_\odot$ Red Giant. A typical BH ULX consist of a $\sim8\,M_\odot$ BH and $\sim6\,M_\odot$ main-sequence star. Additionally, we find that the very luminous ULXs ($L_X\gtrsim10^{41}$ erg/s) are predominantly BH systems ($\sim9\,M_\odot$) with Hertzsprung gap donors ($\sim2\,M_\odot$). We consider the three currently known pulsing ultraluminous X--ray sources (PULXs). We show that in one of them the observed spinup rate requires super--Eddington accretion rates at the magnetospheric radius, even if magnetar--strength fields are assumed. In the two other systems a normal--strength neutron star field implies super--Eddington accretion at the magnetosphere. Adopting super--Eddington mass transfer as the defining characteristic of ULX systems, we find the parameters required for self--consistent simultaneous fits of the luminosities and spinup rates of the three pulsed systems. These imply near--equality between their magnetospheric radii $R_M$ and the spherization radii $R_{\rm sph}$ where radiation pressure becomes important and drives mass loss from the accretion disc. We interpret this near--equality as a necessary condition for the systems to appear as pulsed, since if it is violated the pulse fraction is small. We show that as a consequence all PULXs must have spinup rates $\dot\nu \gtrsim 10^{-10}\, {\rm s^{-2}}$, an order of magnitude higher than in any other pulsing neutron--star binaries. The fairly tight conditions required for ULXs to show pulsing support our earlier suggestion that many unpulsed ULX systems must actually contain neutron stars rather than black holes., Comment: 5 pages, MNRAS Letters, in press

We consider ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) where the accretor is a neutron star rather than a black hole. We show that the recently-discovered example (M82 X-2) fits naturally into the simple picture of ULXs as beamed X-ray sources fed at super-Eddington rates, provided that its magnetic field is weaker ($\simeq 10^{11}{\rm G}$) than a new-born X-ray pulsar, as expected if there has been mass gain. Continuing accretion is likely to weaken the field to the point that pulsing stops, and make the system indistinguishable from a ULX containing a black hole. Accordingly we suggest that a significant fraction of all ULXs may actually contain neutron star accretors rather than black holes, reflecting the neutron-star fraction among their X-ray binary progenitors. We emphasize that neutron-star ULXs are likely to have {\it higher} apparent luminosities than black hole ULXs for a given mass transfer rate, as their tighter beaming outweighs their lower Eddington luminosities. This further increases the likely proportion of neutron-star accretors among all ULXs. Polish doughnuts (PDs) are geometrically thick disks that rotate with super-Keplerian velocities in their innermost parts, and whose long and narrow funnels along rotation axes collimate the emerging radiation into beams. In this paper we construct an extremal family of PDs that maximize both geometrical thickness and radiative efficiency. We then derive upper limits for these quantities and subsequently for the related ability to collimate radiation. PDs with such extreme properties may explain the observed properties of the ultraluminous X-ray sources without the need for the black hole masses to exceed ~ 10 solar masses. However, we show that strong advective cooling, which is expected to be one of the dominant cooling mechanisms in accretion flows with super-Eddington accretion rates, tends to reduce the geometrical thickness and luminosity of PDs substantially. We also show that the beamed radiation emerging from the PD funnels corresponds to "isotropic" luminosities that linearly scale with the mass accretion rate, and do not obey the familiar and well-known logarithmic relation., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

We study energy flows in geometrically thick accretion discs, both optically thick and thin, using general relativistic, three-dimensional simulations of black hole accretion flows. We find that for non-rotating black holes the efficiency of the total feedback from thick accretion discs is $3\%$ - roughly half of the thin disc efficiency. This amount of energy is ultimately distributed between outflow and radiation, the latter scaling weakly with the accretion rate for super-critical accretion rates, and returned to the interstellar medium. Accretion on to rotating black holes is more efficient because of the additional extraction of rotational energy. This is an introduction to models of accretion discs around black holes. After a presentation of the non-relativistic equations describing the structure and evolution of geometrically thin accretion discs we discuss their steady-state solutions and compare them to observation. Next we describe in detail the thermal-viscous disc instability model and its application to dwarf novae for which it was designed and its X-ray irradiated-disc version which explains the soft X--ray transients, i.e. outbursting black-hole low-mass X-ray binaries. We then turn to the role of advection in accretion flows onto black holes illustrating its action and importance with a toy model describing both ADAFs and slim discs. The disk instability picture gives a plausible explanation for the behavior of soft X-ray transient systems if self-irradiation of the disk is included. We show that there is a simple relation between the peak luminosity (at the start of an outburst) and the decay timescale. We use this relation to place constraints on systems assumed to undergo disk instabilities. The observable X-ray populations of elliptical galaxies must largely consist of long-lived transients, as deduced on different grounds by Piro and Bildsten (2002). The strongly-varying X-ray source HLX-1 in the galaxy ESO 243-49 can be modeled as a disk instability of a highly super-Eddington stellar-mass binary similar to SS433. A fit to the disk instability picture is not possible for an intermediate-mass black hole model for HLX-1. If the ultraluminous source (ULX) M82 X-2 sustains its measured spin-up value of $\dot \nu= 10^{-10}\,{\rm s^{-2}}$, it will become a millisecond pulsar in less than $10^5\,$ years. The observed (isotropic) luminosity of $10^{40}\,$ erg/s also supports the notion that the neutron star will spin up to a millisecond period upon accreting about $0.1\,{\rm M_\odot}$---the reported hard X-ray luminosity of this ULX, together with the spin-up value, implies torques consistent with the accretion disk extending down to the vicinity of the stellar surface, as expected for low values of the stellar dipole magnetic field ($B\lesssim 10^9\,$G). This suggests a new channel of millisecond pulsar formation---in high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs)---and may have implications for studies of gravitational waves, and possibly for the formation of low-mass black holes through accretion-induced collapse., Comment: proof-read version, <6 pages

Recent observations of two unusual Z Cam systems, V513 Cas and IW And have shown light curves that seem to contradict the disc-instability model for dwarf novae: outbursts are appearing during standstills of the system when according to the model, the disc is supposed to be in a hot quasi-equilibrium state. We investigate what additional physical processes need to be included in the model to reconcile it with observations of such anomalous Z Cam systems. We used our code for modeling thermal-viscous outbursts of the accretion discs and determined what types of mass-transfer variations reproduce the observed light curves. Outbursts of mass transfer (with a duration of a few days, with a short rise time and an exponential decay) from the stellar companion will account for the observed properties of V513 Cas and IW And, provided they are followed by a short but significant mass-transfer dip. The total mass involved in outbursts is of the order of 10$^{23}$g. We studied the possible origins of these mass transfer outbursts and showed that they most probably result from a giant flare near the secondary star surface, possibly due to the absence of star spots in the $L_1$ region., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures. We show that the hyperluminous source HLX--1 may be a stellar--mass binary system like SS433, but seen along its X--ray beams. The precession of these beams gives the $\sim 1$~yr characteristic timescale of the light curve, while the significant X--ray duty cycle means that the precession angle must be comparable with the beam opening angle, which is of order $1.6^{\circ}$. The X--ray light curve appears to result from geometric collimation and scattering as the beam moves through the line of sight. Encouragingly, the distance $\sim 95$~Mpc suggested for HLX--1 is only a few times larger than the minimum distance at which we can expect to view such a highly--beamed system along its axis. This picture allows a simple interpretation of HLX--1 as the most extreme known member of the ULX population., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

Massive black holes (MBHs) in contrast to stellar mass black holes are expected to substantially change their properties over their lifetime. MBH masses increase by several order of magnitude over the Hubble time, as illustrated by Soltan's argument. MBH spins also must evolve through the series of accretion and mergers events that grow the MBH's masses. We present a simple model that traces the joint evolution of MBH masses and spins across cosmic time. Our model includes MBH-MBH mergers, merger-driven gas accretion, stochastic fueling of MBHs through molecular cloud capture, and a basic implementation of accretion of recycled gas. This approach aims at improving the modeling of low-redshift MBHs and AGN, whose properties can be more easily estimated observationally. Despite the simplicity of the model, it captures well the global evolution of the MBH population from z\sim6 to today. Under our assumptions, we find that the typical spin and radiative efficiency of MBHs decrease with cosmic time because of the higher incidence of stochastic processes in gas-rich galaxies and MBH-MBH mergers in gas-poor galaxies. At z=0 the spin distribution in gas-poor galaxies peaks at spins 0.4-0.8, and it is not strongly mass dependent. MBHs in gas-rich galaxies have a more complex evolution, with low-mass MBHs at low redshift having low spins, and spins increasing at larger masses and redshifts. We also find that at z>1 MBH spins are on average highest in high luminosity AGN, while at lower redshifts these differences disappear., Comment: ApJ, in press

The physical mechanisms driving angular momentum transport in accretion discs are still unknown. Although it is generally accepted that, in hot discs, the turbulence triggered by the magneto-rotational instability is at the origin of the accretion process in Keplerian discs, it has been found that the values of the stress-to-pressure ratio (the alpha "viscosity" parameter) deduced from observations of outbursting discs are an order of magnitude higher than those obtained in numerical simulations. We test the conclusion about the observation-deduced value of alpha using a new set of data and comparing the results with model outbursts. We analyse a set of observations of dwarf-nova and AM CVn star outbursts and from the measured decay times determine the hot-disc viscosity parameter alpha_h. We determine if and how this method is model dependent. From the dwarf-nova disc instability model we determine an amplitude vs recurrence-time relation and compare it to the empirical Kukarkin-Parenago relation between the same, but observed, quantities. We found that all methods we tried, including the one based on the amplitude vs recurrence-time relation, imply alpha_h ~ 0.1 - 0.2 and exclude values an order of magnitude lower. The serious discrepancy between the observed and the MRI-calculated values of the accretion disc viscosity parameter alpha is therefore real since there can be no doubt about the validity of the values deduced from observations of disc outbursts., Comment: Astronomy and Astrophysics, in press. Gamma-ray catalogs contain a considerable amount of unidentified sources. Many of these are located out of the Galactic plane and therefore may have extragalactic origin. Here we assume that the formation of massive black holes in galactic nuclei proceeds through a quasi-star stage and consider the possibility of jet production by such objects. Those jets would be the sources of collimated synchrotron and Compton emission, extending from radio to gamma rays. The expected lifetimes of quasi-stars are of the order of million of years while the jet luminosities, somewhat smaller than that of quasar jets, are sufficient to account for the unidentified gamma-ray sources. The jet emission dominates over the thermal emission of a quasi-star in all energy bands, except when the jet is not directed towards an observer. The predicted synchrotron emission peaks in the IR band, with the flux close to the limits of the available IR all sky surveys. The ratio of the $\gamma$-ray flux to the IR flux is found to be very large ($\sim 60$), much larger than in BL Lac objects but reached by some radio-loud quasars. On the other hand, radio-loud quasars show broad emission lines while no such lines are expected from quasi-stars. Therefore the differentiation between various scenarios accounting for the unidentified gamma-ray sources will be possible at the basis of the photometry and spectroscopy of the IR/optical counterparts., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure; accepted by ApJ Letters

Outbursting AM CVn stars exhibit outbursts similar to those observed in different types of dwarf novae. Their light-curves combine the characteristic features of SU UMa, ER UMa, Z Cam, and WZ Sge-type systems but also show a variety of properties never observed in dwarf novae. The compactness of AM CVn orbits and their unusual chemical composition make these systems valuable testbeds for outburst models. We aim for a better understanding of the role of helium in the accretion disc instability mechanism, testing the model for dwarf novae outbursts in the case of AM CVn stars, and aim to explain the outburst light-curves of these ultra-compact binaries. We calculated the properties of the hydrogen-free AM CVn stars using our previously developed numerical code adapted to the different chemical composition of these systems and supplemented with formulae accounting for mass transfer rate variations, additional sources of the disc heating, and the primary's magnetic field. We discovered how helium-dominated discs react to the thermal-viscous instability and were able to reproduce various features of the outburst cycles in the light-curves of AM CVn stars. The AM CVn outbursts can be explained by the suitably adapted dwarf-nova disc instability model but, as in the case of its application to hydrogen-dominated cataclysmic variables, one has to resort to additional mechanisms to account for the observed superoutbursts, dips, cycling states, and standstills. We show that the enhanced mass-transfer rate, due presumably to variable irradiation of the secondary, must not only be taken into account but is a determining factor that shapes AM CVn star outbursts. We derive and investigate the dispersion relation for accretion disks with retarded or advanced heating. We follow the alpha-prescription but allow for a time offset (\tau) between heating and pressure perturbations, as well as for a diminished response of heating to pressure variations. We study in detail solutions of the dispersion relation for disks with radiation-pressure fraction 1 - \beta . For \tau <0 (delayed heating) the number and sign of real solutions for the growth rate depend on the values of the time lag and the ratio of heating response to pressure perturbations, \xi . If the delay is larger than a critical value (e.g., if \Omega \tau <-125 for \alpha =0.1, \beta =0 and \xi =1) two real solutions exist, which are both negative. We study the process of spinning up black holes by accretion from slim disks in a wide range of accretion rates. We show that for super-Eddington accretion rates and low values of the viscosity parameter alpha (\lesssim 0.01) the limiting value of the dimensionless spin parameter a_* can reach values higher than a_*=0.9978 inferred by Thorne (1974) in his seminal study. For \mdot=10\mdot_{Edd} and alpha=0.01 spin equilibrium is reached at a_*=0.9994. We show that the equilibrium spin value depends strongly on the assumed value of alpha. We report on a scheme for incorporating vertical radiative energy transport into a fully relativistic, Kerr-metric model of optically thick, advective, transonic alpha disks. Our code couples the radial and vertical equations of the accretion disk. The flux was computed in the diffusion approximation, and convection is included in the mixing-length approximation. We present the detailed structure of this "two-dimensional" slim-disk model for alpha=0.01. We then calculated the emergent spectra integrated over the disk surface. The values of surface density, radial velocity, and the photospheric height for these models differ by 20%-30% from those obtained in the polytropic, height-averaged slim disk model considered previously. However, the emission profiles and the resulting spectra are quite similar for both types of models. The effective optical depth of the slim disk becomes lower than unity for high values of the alpha parameter and for high accretion rates., Comment: 15 pages, 18 figures (2 new), A&A in press

The "radiation inner edge" of an accretion disk is defined as the inner boundary of the region from which most of the luminosity emerges. Similarly, the "reflection edge" is the smallest radius capable of producing a significant X-ray reflection of the fluorescent iron line. For black hole accretion disks with very sub-Eddington luminosities these and all other "inner edges" locate at ISCO. Thus, in this case, one may rightly consider ISCO as the unique inner edge of the black hole accretion disk. However, even for moderate luminosities, there is no such unique inner edge as differently defined edges locate at different places. Several of them are significantly closer to the black hole than ISCO. The differences grow with the increasing luminosity. We briefly summarize the observational properties of ultra-compact binaries called AM CVn stars. We analize their outbursts originating from the thermal-viscous instability in helium accretion disc. We present our preliminary results in applying the model of Dwarf Novae outbursts to helium discs. We can calculate models of outbursts of reasonable amplitude of 2 mag with a constant alfa parameter throughout the calculation. Setting the mass transfer rate close to its upper critical value produces model lightcurves that resemble short superoutbursts., Comment: To be published in Astronomische Nachrichten

Accretion disks in AGN should be subject to the same type of instability as in cataclysmic variables (CVs) or in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), which leads to dwarf nova and soft X-ray transient outbursts. It has been suggested that this thermal/viscous instability can account for the long term variability of AGNs. We test this assertion by presenting a systematic study of the application of the disk instability model (DIM) to AGNs. We are using the adaptative grid numerical code we have developed in the context of CVs, enabling us to fully resolve the radial structure of the disk. We show that, because in AGN disks the Mach numbers are very large, the heating and cooling fronts are so narrow that they cannot be resolved by the numerical codes that have been used until now. In addition, these fronts propagate on time scales much shorter than the viscous time. As a result, a sequence of heating and cooling fronts propagate back and forth in the disk, leading only to small variations of the accretion rate onto the black hole, with short quiescent states occurring for very low mass transfer rates only. Truncation of the inner part of the disk by e.g. an ADAF does not alter this result, but enables longer quiescent states. Finally we discuss the effects of irradiation by the central X-ray source, and show that, even for extremely high irradiation efficiencies, outbursts are not a natural outcome of the model., Comment: Astronomy & Astrophysics - in press

Recently [arXiv:astro-ph/0612155] we presented a formal mathematical proof that, contrary to a widespread misconception, cosmological expansion cannot be understood as the motion of galaxies in non-expanding space. We showed that the cosmological redshift must be physically interpreted as the expansion of space. Although our proof was generally accepted, a few authors disagreed. Radiation from accretion discs in cataclysmic variable stars (CVs) provides fundamental information about the properties of these close binary systems and about the physics of accretion in general. The detailed diagnostics of accretion disc structure can be achieved by including in its description all the relevant heating and cooling physical mechanism, in particular the convective energy transport that, although dominant at temperatures less than about 10 000 K, is usually not taken into account when calculating spectra of accretion discs. We constructed a radiative transfer code coupled with a code determining the disc's hydrostatic vertical structure. We have obtained for the first time model spectra of cold, convective accretion discs. As expected, these spectra are mostly flat in the optical wavelengths with no contribution from the UV, which in quiescence must be emitted by the white dwarf. The disc structures obtained with our radiative-transfer code compare well with the solutions of equations used to describe the dwarf-nova outburst cycle according to the thermal-viscous disc instability model thus allowing the two to be combined. Our code allows calculating the spectral evolution of dwarf nova stars through their whole outburst cycle, providing a new tool for testing models of accretion discs in cataclysmic variables. We show that convection plays an important role in determining the vertical disc structure and substantially affects emitted spectra when, as often the case, it is effective at optical depths tau ~ 1. Stellar companions of accreting neutron stars in ultra compact X-ray binaries (UCXBs) are hydrogen-deficient. Their helium or C/O accretion discs are strongly X-ray irradiated. Both the chemical composition and irradiation determine the disc stability with respect to thermal and viscous perturbations. At shorter periods, UCXBs are persistent, whereas longer-period systems are mostly transient. To understand this behaviour one has to derive the stability criteria for X-ray irradiated hydrogen-poor accretion discs. We use a modified and updated version of the Dubus et al. code describing time-dependent irradiated accretion discs around compact objects. We obtained the relevant stability criteria and compared the results to observed properties of UCXBs. Although the general trend in the stability behaviour of UCXBs is consistent with the prediction of the disc instability model, in a few cases the inconsistency of theoretical predictions with the system observed properties is weak enough to be attributed to observational and/or theoretical uncertainties.
