Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) plays a pivotal role in influencing metal binding and mobility within lagoon sediments. However, there exists a gap in understanding the compositional alterations of DOM concerning Rare Earth Elements (REEs) across varying pollution gradients. This study aimed to characterize DOM and examine its relationship with REEs in sediment cores from different pollution levels in Yundang Lagoon, China using excitation-emission matrix-parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC). The results raveled four distinct fluorescent components. Among these, two correspond to humic-like substances, while the remaining two are attributed to protein-like substances. Remarkably, the prevalence of protein-like compounds was observed to exceed 58% of the total fluorescence intensity across all the investigated sites. Furthermore, a substantial discrepancy in total fluorescence intensity was detected between the Songbai Lake and the Inner and Outer Lagoon, indicating a variance in DOM content. In terms of REEs, the average concentration of total REEs was notably elevated within the Songbai Lake sediments (318.36 mg/kg) as compared to the Inner and Outer Lagoon sediments (296.36 and 278.05 mg/kg, respectively). Of significance is the enrichment of Light Rare Earth Elements (LREEs), particularly Ce, La, Pr, and Nd, over Heavy REEs (HREEs) across all surveyed locations. Intriguingly, a coherent trend emerged wherein the fluorescence intensity and LREE concentrations exhibited a synchronized increase from Outer to Inner to Songbai Lake core sediments. This observation substantiates a strong correlation between DOM content and pollution levels (p < 0.05). The continuous degradation of environmental ecosystems (land, water and soil) resulting from crude oil exploration and exploitation activities continues to gain global attention. This study investigates the effects of crude oil exploration and exploitation activities on soil, water and air in the study area. Soil samples were collected in three replicates at depths of 0-15 and 15-30 cm at sampling distances of 20, 100 and 200 m a from core oil exploitation operation area and a control point. Water samples were also taken from within the study area and analyzed using standard procedures. Major pollutants concentrations of particulate matter (PM 2.5 and PM 10 ) of the air were also measured using Air Quality Index (AQI). The results reveal that the soil, water and air parameters measured mostly at 20 m from the core oil operation area compromise the allowable standards provided for healthy living. In the same manner, some results at 100 and 200 m were slightly higher than the recommended values in some cases of heavy metals and bacteria activities in the soil. The AQI at 20 m was far above the permissible limit provided by the Environmental Protection Agency while others are gradually drawing towards the limit given for each pollutant. To safeguard the health of the residents of the host community and oil field workers, there is a need for proper and frequent environmental monitoring and assessment by authorized regulatory bodies in Nigeria. This will prevent any future exposure which may endanger the lives of the dwellers.

Graphyne and its family members (GFMs) are allotropes of carbon (a class of 2D materials) having unique properties in form of structures, pores and atom hybridizations. Owing to their unique properties, GFMs have been widely utilized in various practical and theoretical applications. In the past decade, GFMs have received considerable attention in the area of water purification and desalination, especially in theoretical and computational aspects. More recently, GFMs have shown greater prospects in achieving optimal separation performance than the experimentally derived commercial polyamide membranes. In this review, recent theoretical and computational advances made in the GFMs research as it relates to water purification and desalination are summarized. Brief details on the properties of GFMs and the commonly used computational methods were described. More specifically, we systematically reviewed the various computational approaches employed with emphasis on the predicted permeability and selectivity of the GFM membranes. The pressure and dependence on coastal aquifers are on the rise in many parts of the globe. These lead to overexploitation, aggravated levels of groundwater pollution, and seawater intrusion. Integrated analyses can create holistic insights into the quality and the vulnerability of aquifers to seawater intrusion. In this study, Mombasa North coast's coastal aquifer was characterized by integrating multiple approaches-GALDIT overlay index, seawater intrusion groundwater quality index GQI SWI , total hardness, water quality index (WQI)-and the results were further explored and interpreted with geospatial analysis techniques. The study suggests that the predominant water type in areas under moderate or high vulnerabilities to seawater intrusion is the Na-Cl water type. However, similar Na-Cl water types can produce a range of total hardness from soft to hard. GQI SWI classification can be used to narrow down the observations from Stuyfzand's TH-based classification system. In the aquifer studied, the results of the GALDIT overlay index, a weighted aggregation of intrinsic parameters contributing to seawater intrusion, show that 29%, 59%, and 12% of the aquifer have low, moderate, and high vulnerabilities, respectively. The GQI SWI analysis indicates that the groundwater is largely brackish (68%) but saline towards the southern end of the aquifer at 32%. Total hardness values indicate that 67% of the aquifer's coverage falls under the "moderately hard" category. The geodatabase creation introduced in the study provides a template for similar studies and a baseline for future WQI and water quality monitoring. This study investigated the effects of an aqueous acidic solution at typical concentrations on polymeric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-based membranes. Flat-sheet PVDF-based membranes were completely embedded in sulfuric acid at varying concentrations. The effect of the acid concentration after a prolonged exposure time on the chemical, mechanical and physical properties of the membrane were checked via FE-SEM, EDX (Energy-Dispersive Spectrometer), FTIR, XRD, tensile strength, zeta potential, contact angle, porosity, pure water flux measurement and visual observation. The result reveals prompt initiation of reaction between the PVDF membrane and sulfuric acid, even at a mild concentration. As the exposure time extends with increasing concentration, the change in chemical and mechanical properties become more pronounced, especially in the morphology, although this was not really noticeable in either the crystalline phase or the functional group analyses. The ultimate mechanical strength decreased from 46.18 ± 0.65 to 32.39 ± 0.22 MPa, while the hydrophilicity was enhanced due to enlargement of the pores. The flux at the highest concentration and exposure period increased by 2.3 times that of the neat membrane, while the BSA (Bovine Serum Albumin) rejection dropped by 55%. Similar to in an alkaline environment, the stability and performance of the PVDF-based membrane analyzed in this study manifested general deterioration.
