Background: Loneliness is a public health concern associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Adverse health behaviours and a higher body mass index (BMI) have been proposed as key mechanisms influencing this association. The present study aims to examine the relationship between loneliness, adverse health behaviour and a higher BMI, including daily smoking, high alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, unhealthy dietary habits, and obesity in men and women and across different life stages. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study using data from the 2017 Danish National Health Survey (entitled "How are you?"). Loneliness was assessed using the Three-Item Loneliness Scale. Logistic regression models were employed to analyse the association between loneliness, health behaviour and obesity in a sample of 122,258 individuals (16 + years). The models were adjusted for sex, age, educational attainment, country of origin, and partnership status. Stratified analyses were conducted to investigate differences by sex and life stages. Results: Loneliness was associated with an increased risk of daily smoking (Adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 1.30; 95% CI: 1.21–1.40), physical inactivity (AOR = 1.87; 95% CI: 1.75–1.99), unhealthy diet (AOR = 1.58; 95% CI: 1.47–1.70), and obesity (AOR = 1.60; 95% CI: 1.49–1.72). Conversely, loneliness was associated with a reduced risk of high alcohol consumption in men (AOR = 0.82; 95% CI: 0.74-0.0.91). Conclusions: Our study provides evidence that loneliness is associated with adverse health behaviour and obesity in both men and women and across the lifespan. These findings suggest that health behaviours and obesity may influence the association between loneliness and poor health outcomes. Objective: We aimed to 1) identify distinct segments within the general population characterized by various combinations of stressors (stressor profiles) and to 2) examine the socio-demographic composition of these segments and their associations with perceived stress levels. Methods: Segmentation was carried out by latent class analysis of nine self-reported stressors in a representative sample of Danish adults (N = 32,417) aged 16+ years. Perceived stress level was measured by the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Results: Seven classes were identified: Class 1 was labeled Low Stressor Burden (64% of the population) and the remaining six classes, which had different stressor combinations, were labeled: 2) Burdened by Financial, Work, and Housing Stressors (10%); 3) Burdened by Disease and Death among Close Relatives (9%); 4) Burdened by Poor Social Support and Strained Relationships (8%); 5) Burdened by Own Disease (6%); 6) Complex Stressor Burden Involving Financial, Work, and Housing Stressors (2%); and 7) Complex Stressor Burden Involving Own Disease and Disease and Death among Close Relatives (2%). Being female notably increased the likelihood of belonging to Classes 2, 3, 5, and 7. Higher age increased the likelihood of belonging to Class 3. Low educational attainment increased the likelihood of belonging to Classes 5 and 6. A significant difference was observed in perceived stress levels between the seven latent classes. Average PSS varied from 9.0 in Class 1 to 24.2 in Class 7 and 25.0 in Class 6. Conclusion: Latent class analysis allowed us to identify seven population segments with various stressor combinations. Six of the segments had elevated perceived stress levels but differed in terms of socioeconomic composition and stressor combinations. These insights may inform a strategy aimed at improving mental health in the general population by targeting efforts to particular population segments, notably segments experiencing challenging life situations. Social isolation is associated with increased mortality. Meta-analytic results, however, indicate heterogeneity in effect sizes. We aimed to provide new evidence to the association between social isolation and mortality by conducting a population-based cohort study. We reconstructed the Berkman and Syme's social network index (SNI), which combines four components of social networks (partnership, interaction with family/friends, religious activities, and membership in organizations/clubs) into an index, ranging from 0/1 (most socially isolated) to 4 (least socially isolated). We estimated cumulative mortality and adjusted mortality rate ratios (MRR) associated with SNI. We adjusted for potential important confounders, including psychiatric and somatic status, lifestyle, and socioeconomic status. Cumulative 7-year mortality in men was 11% for SNI 0/1 and 5.4% for SNI 4 and in women 9.6% for SNI 0/1 and 3.9% for SNI 4. Adjusted MRRs comparing SNI 0/1 with SNI 4 were 1.7 (95% CI: 1.1-2.6) among men and 1.6 (95% CI: 0.83-2.9) among women. Having no partner was associated with an adjusted MRR of 1.5 (95% CI: 1.2-2.1) for men and 1.7 (95% CI: 1.2-2.4) for women. In conclusion, social isolation was associated with 60-70% increased mortality. Having no partner was associated with highest MRR.

Background: Despite the recognised importance of mental disorders and social disconnectedness for mortality, few studies have examined their co-occurrence. Aims: To examine the interaction between mental disorders and three distinct aspects of social disconnectedness on mortality, while taking into account sex, age and characteristics of the mental disorder. Method: This cohort study included participants from the Danish National Health Survey in 2013 and 2017 who were followed until 2021. Survey data on social disconnectedness (loneliness, social isolation and low social support) were linked with register data on hospital-diagnosed mental disorders and mortality. Poisson regression was applied to estimate independent and joint associations with mortality, interaction contrasts and attributable proportions. Results: A total of 162 497 individuals were followed for 886 614 person-years, and 9047 individuals (5.6%) died during follow-up. Among men, interaction between mental disorders and loneliness, social isolation and low social support, respectively, accounted for 47% (95% CI: 21–74%), 24% (95% CI: −15 to 63%) and 61% (95% CI: 35–86%) of the excess mortality after adjustment for demographics, country of birth, somatic morbidity, educational level, income and wealth. In contrast, among women, no excess mortality could be attributed to interaction. No clear trends were identified according to age or characteristics of the mental disorder. Conclusions: Mortality among men, but not women, with a co-occurring mental disorder and social disconnectedness was substantially elevated compared with what was expected. Awareness of elevated mortality rates among socially disconnected men with mental disorders could be of importance to qualify and guide prevention efforts in psychiatric services. Aims: Prolonged loneliness and severe stress are increasingly recognised as public health concerns and considered risk factors for mental disorders, somatic illnesses and mortality. Loneliness and perceived stress also often co-occur; however, their longitudinal relation remains unclear. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study aiming to investigate the longitudinal relation between loneliness and perceived stress independently of cross-sectional associations and time effects. Methods: Designed as a population-based cohort study with repeated measurements, the present study included individuals aged 16–80 years at baseline who participated in the Danish National Health Survey ('How are you?') in 2013 and 2017 (N = 10,159; response rate = 50%). Structural equation modelling was used to examine associations between loneliness and perceived stress in the total sample and across age groups (i.e., 16–29, 30–64 and 65–80 years). Results: The models indicated bidirectional relations between loneliness and perceived stress. The standardized cross-lagged path from loneliness to perceived stress (β: 0.12, 95% confidence interval (CI) (0.08, 0.16), p < 0.001) and from perceived stress to loneliness (β: 0.12, 95% CI (0.07, 0.16), p < 0.001) both corresponded to small effect sizes in the total sample. Additionally, the results indicated strong cross-sectional associations, especially among adolescents and young adults (16–29 years), and high temporal stability, especially among the elderly (65–80 years). Conclusions: Loneliness and perceived stress mutually predict each other over time. The finding of both substantial bidirectional and cross-sectional associations demonstrates an interdependence between loneliness and perceived stress that may be relevant to consider in future interventions. However, few have investigated whether these associations differ by type of violence. The present study examined whether associations with four different ADV subgroups differed by the type of child maltreatment experienced. In total, 2934 7th grade students aged 12-15 (M = 13.5, SD = .5) filled out questionnaires at school. Logistic regression models which included eight potential confounding variables including gender, low SES, parenting styles as well as four forms of child abuse (i.e. emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, witnessing domestic violence), were performed to assess the impact of child maltreatment on the likelihood that the students would either be a victim or perpetrator of four distinct ADV subgroups (i.e. emotional only, physical, sexual only, multiple). Child sexual abuse was by far the strongest predictor of ADV, with odds ratios of 3.44 to 43.41. The remaining maltreatment types were associated with different types of ADV to varying degrees. The findings indicate a complex interaction between child maltreatment and ADV. To fully understand the complexity of the transmission of violence, further research on associations between subcategories of child maltreatment and ADV is suggested. More detailed knowledge on different child maltreatment experiences in relation to ADV would enable more specific targeting in future prevention programs aimed at reducing ADV.

Research on childhood posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is sparse. This is partly due to the limited availability of empirically validated measures for children who are insecure readers. The present study examined the reliability and validity of a cartoon-based measure of PTSD symptoms in children exposed to a disaster. Cartoons were generated on the basis of the literature and on the "Darryl" test, which was originally designed to assess community violence-related PTSD. Using a sample of 430 children, preliminary analyses demonstrated that the adapted version of the Darryl test had reasonable psychometric properties. Future validation of the measure as a screening tool is discussed. (Contains 1 figure and 1 table.)

The objective of this study was to develop a psychometric measure of risk for sexual victimization from adolescent peers. Items were generated on the basis of the literature and on consultations with a multidisciplinary group of key informants. The items were administered to a sample of 327 female Grade-9 students and examined using exploratory factor analysis. The Adolescent Sexual Coercion Risk Scale items formed two lower-order factors composed of items regarding signaling sexual boundaries and displaying risk behaviors, respectively. Subsequent confirmatory factor analysis supported the two factors, and preliminary psychometric analyses demonstrated that the factors have satisfactory internal consistency. In addition, low scores on the ability to signal sexual boundaries and high scores on risk behaviors were associated with self-reported peer sexual victimization, supporting the validity of the factors as measures of risk. Future validation and potential usage of the measure are discussed. (Contains 1 table.)

The paper presents the first known longitudinal study of the relationship between loneliness, depressive symptoms, and suicide ideation in adolescence, in a stratified sample of high school students (Time 1 N = 1009; 57% female; Time 2 N = 541; 60% female). Cross-lagged structural equation modeling indicated that depressive symptoms led to more loneliness across time, whereas loneliness did not predict higher levels of depressive symptoms across time. Loneliness was found to be a correlate of depressive symptoms at the cross-sectional level, independent of gender, other demographic factors, multiple psychosocial variables, and social desirability. Loneliness did not predict suicide ideation over time or at the cross-sectional level, when controlling for depressive symptoms. Gender did not predict loneliness, depressive symptoms or suicide ideation across time. Future longitudinal studies of the relationship between loneliness, depressive symptoms, and suicide ideation in adolescence should use more extensive designs.

Loneliness and perceived social support were examined in 39 adolescent boys with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) by means of a self-labeling loneliness measure, the UCLA Loneliness Scale (third version), and the Social Support Scale for Children. Twenty-one percent of the boys with ASD described themselves as often or always feeling lonely. Compared with 199 boys from regular schools in a national probability study, ASD was strongly associated with often or always feeling lonely (OR: 7.08, p less than 0.0005), as well as with a higher degree of loneliness ("F"(1,229) = 11.1, p less than 0.005). Perceived social support from classmates, parents, and a close friend correlated negatively with loneliness in ASD. The study, therefore, indicates a high occurrence of loneliness among adolescent boys with ASD and points at perceived social support as an important protective factor.
