2. Putting Theory into Practice: A Professional Development School/University Co-Teaching Project

Abstract

This investigation measured the impact of co-teaching on pre-service teachers' sense of efficacy in classroom management and student engagement. The study utilized a Professional Development School partnership between a university and an elementary school to make a theory-to-practice connection for pre-service teachers enrolled in an applied behavior analysis course. Instruction was delivered by a university professor and an elementary school teacher using collaborative consultation. Changes in pre-service teachers' attitudes were measured by a pre/post administration of the Teachers Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES) (Tschannen-Moran and Wolfolk, 2001). Results suggested that the pre-service teachers' sense of efficacy increased during the course. (Contains 3 tables.)

3. Developing a Predictor of University Students' Course Grades Using Curriculum-Based Measurement: An Initial Investigation

Abstract

University students (n = 69) enrolled in an introductory psychology course at an historically Black university completed nine curriculum-based measurement probes. Results for each student were graphed and trendlines were calculated. Trendline direction was examined to determine whether a possible formative assessment technique might be developed for use at the university level. Suggestions for further research concluded the investigation. (Contains 3 tables.)

Abstract

The newsletter provides useful information for the introduction of philosophy as an organized high school course. Through the newsletter, the Center disseminates information about its operation, and further, facilitates the exchange of information about other places engaged in basic research experimentation about curriculum, methods, and implications of high school philosophy. Four main articles are included in this issue. The lead article, The View of the Center, discusses the rising interest, special problems, and values of introducing a philosophy course. The second article briefly examines the introduction of philosophy into the Lyons Township High School. Other articles include a brief review of "The Report of a 1968-1971 Feasibility Study on High School Philosophy," and a paper describing an attempt to introduce the history of scientific ideas into two all black high schools in Chicago. The newsletter is published for members of the Association for High School Philosophy. A related document is ED 063 220. (SJM)

Abstract

This bulletin traces the movement in Wisconsin for the establishment of schools having for their special object the preparation of teachers for country schools from the early 1890s through to the 1916 establishment of training schools in Racine and Juneau Counties. Contents include: (1) an historical statement; (2) the current county training-school law; (3) the provision of buildings for county training schools, by county; (4) the teachers in the training schools, including principals; (5) the one- and two-year courses of study, and the subjects covered; (6) the students, including some county normal statistics; (7) the graduates--some statistics, as well as county superintendent input on the work done by the graduates; (8) the work of the county training schools outside of the training of teachers, and the rationale for these duties; (9) the advantages of the training school as an institution for training country teachers; (10) some suggestions for improving the work of the county training schools; and (11) Other institutions in Wisconsin preparing teachers for country-school work--normal schools and high schools. Abstract

Design Reference Mission (DRM) evaluations were performed for The Regolith & Environment Science, and Oxygen & Lunar Volatile Extraction (RESOLVE) project to determine future flight mission feasibility and understand potential mission environment impacts on hardware requirements, science/resource assessment objectives, and mission planning. DRM version 2.2 (DRM 2.2) is presented for a notional flight of the RESOLVE payload for lunar resource ground truth and utilization (Figure 1) [1]. The rover/payload deploys on a 10 day surface mission to the Cabeus crater near the lunar south pole in May of 2016. A drill, four primary science instruments, and a high temperature chemical reactor will acquire and characterize water and other volatiles in the near sub-surface, and perform demonstrations of In-Situ Re-source Utilization (ISRU). DRM 2.2 is a reference point, and will be periodically revised to accommodate and incorporate changes to project approach or implementation, and to explore mission alternatives such as landing site or opportunity.

Abstract

Ever since data from the neutron spectrometer instrument on the Lunar Prospector mission indicated the possibility of significant concentrations of hydrogen at the lunar poles, speculation on the form and concentration of the hydrogen has been debated. The recent impact of the Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) along with thermal, topographic, neutron spectrometry, and radar frequency data obtained from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) have provided more information suggesting significant amounts of water/ice and other volatiles may be available in the top 1 to 2 meters of regolith at the lunar poles. The next step in understanding what resources are available at the lunar poles is to perform a mission to obtain ground truth. data. To meet this need, the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) along with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) have been working on a prototype payload known as the Regolith & Environment Science and Oxygen & Lunar Volatile Extraction experiment, or RESOLVE.

29. Use of Hawaii Analog Sites for Lunar Science and In-Situ Resource Utilization

Abstract

In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) and lunar science share similar objectives with respect to analyzing and characterizing the physical, mineral, and volatile materials and resources at sites of robotic and human exploration. To help mature and stress instruments, technologies, and hardware and to evaluate operations and procedures, space agencies have utilized demonstrations at analog sites on Earth before use in future missions. The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), and the German Space Agency (DLR) have utilized an analog site on the slope of Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii to test ISRU and lunar science hardware and operations in two previously held analog field tests. NASA and CSA are currently planning on a 3rd analog field test to be held in June, 2012 in Hawaii that will expand upon the successes from the previous two field tests.

Abstract

We performed a detailed morphologic, immunophenotypic, and endocrine characterization of neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions of androgen-producing cells known to harbor or lack Reinke crystals (RCs) with an aim to provide further insight into the nature of these cells and crystals. Study cases were selected from the files of participating hospitals and subclassified according to current classifications: 20 with Leydig cell tumors (LCTs), 2 with testicular adrenal rest tumors (TARTs), 2 with testicular tumors of adrenogenital syndrome (TTAGS), and 2 with androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS). An extensive immunophenotypic panel including markers used in sex cord-stromal cell tumors, androgen hormones, enzymes, and receptors was applied to the cases and 10 non-tumoral adrenal glands. Non-tumoral tissues were scored separately. RCs were present in 90 % of LCTcases and all cases with normal Leydig cells; RCs stained specifically with calretinin and 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3BHSD) and were present only in cells with high concomitant expression of both proteins, a phenotype unique to Leydig cells and LCTs. Leydig cells from AIS cases lack RCs due to decreased expression of 3BHSD. Calretinin is decreased in testicular adrenal-like tumors and absent in normal adrenocortical cells, which explain why they lack RCs. Calretinin expression in androgen-producing cells is independent from androgen receptors and androgen synthesis. RCs represent for the most part, if not exclusively, crystallized forms of a 3BHSD/calretinin complex. Androgen-producing cells containing and lacking RCs differ mainly in the level of expression of these proteins and androgen receptors.
