Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in secondary schools in Manado, Indonesia, this article examines digital infrastructures and their accompanying (im)moral potentialities in the development of Christian and Muslim youth as evaluated by educators. On the one hand, smartphones are portrayed as portals to a globalizing world in which youth might succumb to negative influences (with a particular anxiety surrounding pornography) based on their perceived inchoate moral development and insufficiently strong religious foundation. On the other hand, these teachers and administrators recognize the potential that smartphones have to be used for deepening spiritual engagement, connection, and proselytization. This particular case study offers insights into the ways in which institutions charged with religious and moral development of youth seek to leverage rather than categorically reject mainstream culture, navigating the globalizing influences of the secular world toward the possibility of attaining a greater good. In the introduction to this special section, I discuss the way in which a focus on pedagogy in ethical practice can provide insights regarding the multifaceted nature of subjectivity, as well as the tendency of ethical learning, broadly understood, to establish new forms of relationality. I interrogate the way in which pedagogy is currently discussed in the anthropology of ethics, working to develop an understanding based on the notion of contingency. These points emerge from the ethnographic and theoretical insights in the articles in this special section, which examine sites and processes of ethical learning across various religious and secular domains in Asia. Precisely because the articles in the collection draw on various theoretical perspectives on ethics and encompass a wide scope of ethnographic contexts, they enable a conversation about the way in which various ethics of relationality are socialized, negotiated, and potentially transformed in the process. Background: The biosynthesis of leucine is a biochemical pathway common to prokaryotes, plants and fungi, but absent from humans and animals. The pathway is a proposed target for antimicrobial therapy., Methodology/principal Findings: Here we identified the leuA gene encoding alpha-isopropylmalate synthase in the zygomycete fungus Phycomyces blakesleeanus using a genetic mapping approach with crosses between wild type and leucine auxotrophic strains. To confirm the function of the gene, Phycomyces leuA was used to complement the auxotrophic phenotype exhibited by mutation of the leu3+ gene of the ascomycete fungus Schizosaccharomyces pombe. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the leuA gene in Phycomyces, other zygomycetes, and the chytrids is more closely related to homologs in plants and photosynthetic bacteria than ascomycetes or basidiomycetes, and suggests that the Dikarya have acquired the gene more recently., Conclusions/significance: The identification of leuA in Phycomyces adds to the growing body of evidence that some primary metabolic pathways or parts of them have arisen multiple times during the evolution of fungi, probably through horizontal gene transfer events.
